therein_o be_v without_o discontent_n covetousness_n distrust_n etc._n etc._n for_o hereby_o we_o shall_v be_v less_o pester_v with_o vain_a and_o carnal_a thought_n when_o we_o intend_v spiritual_a duty_n and_o therefore_o labour_v we_o here_o to_o prosecute_v our_o civil_a affair_n with_o heavenly_a mind_n begin_v they_o with_o prayer_n accompany_v of_o they_o with_o subjection_n to_o god_n will_v not_o measure_v his_o goodness_n by_o they_o or_o propound_v absolute_o success_n in_o they_o and_o so_o shall_v we_o be_v less_o encumber_v with_o such_o thought_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o be_v we_o frequent_v in_o the_o meditation_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n draw_v we_o ourselves_o apart_o often_o into_o god_n presence_n to_o have_v private_a familiarity_n with_o his_o holiness_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v more_o ready_a and_o spiritual_a when_o we_o come_v to_o set_v duty_n especial_o labour_n we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o repentance_n daily_o for_o all_o know_a sin_n that_o so_o we_o may_v more_o bold_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o worship_n and_o may_v more_o free_o and_o entire_o converse_v with_o he_o therein_o because_o sin_v unrepented_a of_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o haunt_v and_o interrupt_v we_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v most_o good_a as_o to_o defile_v the_o same_o so_o in_o the_o wise_a mercy_n of_o god_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o the_o clear_n of_o the_o score_n lest_o if_o we_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o our_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v our_o prayer_n psal_n 66.18_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v to_o begin_v all_o holy_a exercise_n with_o confession_n and_o deprecation_n for_o our_o sin_n especial_o such_o particular_a as_o lie_v upon_o we_o that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o fly_v in_o our_o face_n when_o we_o seek_v the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n so_o if_o we_o conclude_v all_o holy_a duty_n with_o confession_n of_o our_o fayling_n therein_o especial_o of_o the_o vanity_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o wander_v of_o our_o affection_n we_o shall_v hereby_o be_v better_o store_v with_o holy_a thought_n and_o affection_n therein_o and_o less_o interrupt_v with_o the_o contrary_n to_o this_o end_n it_o be_v now_o fit_a also_o that_o we_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o our_o outward_a man_n with_o our_o eye_n ear_n &_o heart_n that_o so_o in_o the_o worshippt_v of_o god_n
they_o may_v not_o wander_v after_o vanity_n and_o so_o let_v in_o such_o occasion_n aâ—_n may_v divert_v and_o corrupt_v our_o serious_a meditation_n and_o yet_o take_v we_o here_o heed_n of_o satan_n policy_n that_o while_o we_o labour_v the_o conformity_n of_o our_o outward_a man_n to_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n we_o grow_v not_o curious_a or_o superstitious_a therein_o tie_v ourselves_o to_o such_o gesture_n of_o the_o body_n which_o in_o private_a be_v indifferent_a or_o else_o more_o tamper_n upon_o the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o namely_o the_o invention_n of_o the_o mind_n lest_o this_o prove_v a_o occasion_n to_o draw_v the_o mind_n to_o the_o sense_n and_o so_o to_o offer_v up_o no_o better_a than_o a_o carnal_a worship_n and_o for_o the_o same_o just_o to_o be_v buffet_v with_o such_o like_a imagination_n and_o therefore_o as_o here_o we_o must_v be_v careful_a in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o avoid_v such_o vain_a pomp_n and_o ceremony_n which_o may_v rather_o work_v upon_o the_o sense_n than_o the_o heart_n and_o so_o to_o affect_v it_o according_a to_o the_o outward_a object_n so_o also_o be_v we_o wise_a to_o keep_v a_o holy_a conformity_n with_o the_o congregation_n therein_o lest_o difference_n of_o gesture_n cause_n distraction_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o so_o oppress_v it_o with_o vain_a affection_n of_o singularity_n scrupulosity_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o as_o it_o be_v unseem_o to_o pray_v when_o other_o sing_v to_o stand_v when_o other_o kneel_v because_o the_o public_a action_n must_v be_v uniform_a as_o in_o the_o matter_n so_o in_o the_o manner_n or_o else_o we_o deface_v the_o communion_n pretend_v therein_o and_o make_v a_o jar_n in_o such_o a_o sweet_a consort_n and_o thereby_o be_v give_v up_o to_o manifold_a vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n so_o it_o be_v wisdom_n to_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o mean_v vouchsafe_v though_o happy_o we_o may_v have_v dainty_a food_n else_o where_o lest_o hereby_o we_o seem_v to_o prescribe_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o discover_v our_o pride_n and_o unthankefulnes_n and_o so_o be_v just_o leave_v to_o such_o thought_n and_o extraordinary_a motion_n as_o may_v scourge_v we_o for_o the_o same_o last_o whereas_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n serve_v aswell_o to_o discover_v corruption_n as_o to_o heal_v the_o same_o therefore_o howsoever_o in_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n the_o vanity_n and_o aberration_n of_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v more_o discern_v through_o satan_n malice_n intend_v hereby_o to_o cast_v we_o from_o the_o same_o yet_o here_o the_o comfort_n be_v that_o what_o at_o the_o first_o discover_v corruption_n be_v also_o able_a to_o heal_v it_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o wait_v upon_o god_n therein_o though_o we_o be_v more_o vile_a assure_v ourselves_o that_o when_o we_o be_v thorough_o humble_v we_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o heal_v as_o that_o still_o we_o shall_v love_v the_o lord_n that_o have_v smite_v we_o &_o trust_v in_o god_n though_o he_o kill_v we_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o remedy_n and_o therefore_o here_o be_v the_o trial_n that_o these_o thought_n be_v in_o cure_n 1_o if_o in_o holy_a duty_n we_o more_o particular_o discern_v they_o 2_o anâ—_n so_o in_o regard_n of_o they_o be_v confound_v in_o respect_n of_o confidence_n in_o the_o work_n do_v as_o of_o ourselves_o 3_o and_o yet_o in_o obedience_n to_o our_o god_n shall_v still_o submit_v to_o his_o ordinance_n 4_o not_o so_o much_o measure_v the_o worth_n and_o acceptance_n thereof_o by_o the_o present_a success_n 5_o as_o still_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n persuade_v ourselves_o that_o our_o person_n and_o service_n shall_v be_v accept_v of_o our_o god_n 6_o and_o so_o in_o this_o assurance_n shall_v still_o draw_v near_o unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n complain_v unto_o our_o god_n of_o the_o unrulinesse_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o labour_v to_o approve_v the_o same_o in_o his_o presence_n wait_v upon_o he_o for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o his_o work_n and_o comfort_v ourselves_o that_o he_o require_v no_o more_o than_o he_o give_v but_o will_v accept_v according_a to_o what_o we_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o what_o we_o have_v not_o still_o ply_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o way_n and_o not_o be_v weary_a of_o well_o do_v undoubted_o we_o shall_v reap_v if_o we_o faint_v not_o and_o for_o the_o present_n shall_v not_o lose_v our_o labour_n we_o shall_v find_v our_o heart_n more_o humble_v to_o meet_v the_o lord_n more_o pliable_a towards_o he_o and_o so_o more_o familiar_a with_o he_o &_o so_o by_o communion_n with_o our_o bless_a god_n more_o freedom_n from_o these_o vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n so_o that_o howsoever_o they_o may_v yet_o glance_v and_o start_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n our_o heart_n shall_v yet_o more_o rise_v against_o they_o our_o cry_n against_o they_o more_o earnest_a our_o affection_n more_o enlarge_v to_o our_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n and_o so_o though_o we_o do_v no_o other_o good_a yet_o if_o we_o can_v give_v over_o with_o a_o sound_n judge_v of_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o out_o of_o conscience_n of_o our_o unworthiness_n of_o any_o mean_n much_o less_o of_o that_o which_o we_o find_v ourselves_o so_o much_o short_a unto_o in_o inward_a conformity_n we_o shall_v hereby_o grow_v more_o pure_a and_o sober_a in_o our_o judgment_n concern_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n not_o stumble_v at_o such_o small_a suppose_v fail_n and_o corruption_n therein_o arise_v rather_o from_o our_o abuse_n than_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o in_o itself_o as_o if_o we_o may_v not_o in_o regard_n thereof_o communicate_v therewith_o nor_o lust_a after_o quail_n when_o we_o have_v plenty_n of_o manna_n as_o distaste_v the_o simplicity_n and_o outward_a seem_a baseness_n thereof_o or_o measure_v the_o same_o by_o the_o estimation_n and_o entertainment_n thereof_o in_o the_o world_n as_o it_o be_v our_o corruption_n through_o desire_n of_o novelty_n and_o change_n to_o think_v other_o come_v better_a than_o our_o own_o because_o indeed_o we_o abuse_v our_o own_o and_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o it_o but_o wise_o judge_v of_o what_o be_v fit_a for_o we_o because_o that_o may_v better_o fit_v other_o which_o be_v not_o so_o convenient_a for_o we_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o manner_n and_o also_o of_o the_o matter_n yea_o all_o matter_n may_v not_o be_v fit_a for_o all_o sort_n at_o all_o time_n we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v between_o thing_n that_o differ_v and_o so_o try_v all_o thing_n shall_v yet_o hold_v that_o which_o be_v good_a not_o refuse_v our_o meat_n because_o other_o do_v abuse_v it_o or_o it_o be_v not_o so_o well_o cook_v but_o in_o the_o conscience_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n shall_v be_v thankful_a for_o what_o we_o have_v as_o know_v it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a till_o the_o lord_n afford_v more_o and_o he_o will_v require_v no_o more_o at_o our_o hand_n then_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n which_o he_o give_v and_o so_o shall_v labour_v to_o be_v faithful_a in_o a_o little_a husband_v that_o well_o which_o be_v commit_v unto_o we_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n answerable_a thereunto_o as_o hereby_o we_o shall_v find_v our_o mind_n settle_v in_o obedience_n to_o our_o god_n so_o we_o shall_v find_v a_o gracious_a return_n of_o this_o our_o obedience_n even_o a_o quiet_v of_o the_o heart_n in_o what_o we_o do_v and_o settle_v of_o our_o thought_n and_o affection_n more_o entire_o thereupon_o that_o so_o we_o may_v reap_v more_o profit_n thereby_o and_o be_v ready_a to_o give_v up_o our_o account_n with_o joy_n and_o not_o with_o grief_n sure_o when_o i_o do_v remember_v what_o stumble_v there_o have_v be_v in_o our_o church_n at_o the_o matter_n &_o manner_n of_o our_o worship_n some_o measure_v it_o by_o the_o vessel_n and_o so_o conceit_v the_o corruption_n thereof_o other_o judge_v it_o by_o the_o outward_a habit_n thereof_o and_o so_o condemn_v it_o to_o be_v antichristian_a and_o so_o not_o to_o be_v communicate_v with_o other_o censure_v of_o it_o by_o it_o estimation_n &_o success_n which_o be_v not_o powerful_a with_o the_o wise_a and_o multitude_n be_v therefore_o reject_v because_o not_o many_o seem_a wise_n nor_o noble_a do_v embrace_v the_o same_o joh._n 7.48_o as_o this_o be_v unto_o i_o be_v a_o plain_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o it_o be_v a_o sufficient_a satisfaction_n not_o to_o stumble_v with_o these_o stumbler_n but_o to_o hold_v the_o truth_n in_o sobriety_n and_o meekness_n especial_o when_o i_o consider_v a_o double_a effect_n of_o these_o stumbling_n the_o one_o in_o those_o who_o be_v give_v up_o by_o the_o lord_n so_o to_o stumble_v that_o they_o shall_v never_o recover_v again_o have_v therefore_o
this_o rule_n we_o may_v further_o determine_v of_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n in_o our_o general_a course_n by_o our_o very_a thought_n namely_o by_o the_o entertainment_n or_o disclaim_v of_o they_o but_o still_o it_o will_v be_v reply_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o our_o thought_n because_o we_o can_v discern_v they_o 2_o therefore_o we_o must_v answer_v hereunto_o by_o a_o distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v our_o thought_n in_o general_a of_o all_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o discern_v they_o so_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o this_o trial_n because_o this_o only_a belong_v unto_o god_n so_o to_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o discern_v this_o infinite_a variety_n of_o the_o thought_n thereof_o and_o our_o god_n will_v require_v no_o more_o at_o our_o hand_n then_o what_o he_o give_v namely_o so_o far_o to_o discern_v our_o heart_n as_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o which_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o holy_a order_n in_o our_o thought_n that_o they_o may_v intend_v what_o we_o be_v employ_v in_o and_o endeavour_v to_o diminish_v the_o multitude_n and_o distraction_n of_o they_o by_o watch_v against_o evil_a thought_n &_o reject_v they_o and_o cherish_v the_o good_a by_o exercise_v the_o general_a calling_n with_o more_o constancy_n and_o humility_n and_o our_o civil_a calling_n with_o more_o heavenly_a mind_n do_v all_o thing_n as_o in_o god_n presence_n to_o his_o glory_n of_o which_o particular_o before_o and_o last_o if_o we_o do_v not_o wilful_o give_v way_n to_o our_o evil_a thought_n as_o if_o they_o be_v free_a or_o seek_v to_o rebel_v against_o the_o good_a reclaim_v we_o from_o evil_n but_o wise_o labour_v to_o observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n snub_v for_o evil_a and_o so_o to_o prevent_v consent_n and_o act_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o conscionable_o entertain_v all_o good_a and_o holy_a motion_n by_o prayer_n and_o diligent_a actuate_a thereof_o which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v have_v comfort_n of_o sincerity_n that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v we_o labour_v to_o preserve_v this_o holy_a government_n and_o what_o we_o know_v not_o shall_v not_o be_v require_v of_o us._n and_o above_o all_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o though_o we_o know_v nothing_o by_o ourselves_o yet_o therein_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v 1_o cor._n 4.4.5_o so_o hereby_o we_o be_v cast_v upon_o the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o the_o acceptance_n of_o our_o person_n above_o all_o our_o own_o worth_n or_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o chap._n xiiii_o case_n of_o conscience_n to_o be_v resolve_v herein_o be_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o unsanctified_a thought_n that_o we_o think_v more_o and_o often_o of_o earthly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n the_o resolution_n hereof_o consist_v in_o a_o wise_a distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n whereof_o some_o be_v inject_v by_o satan_n and_o make_v our_o own_o by_o like_v and_o entertain_v of_o they_o other_o arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n not_o thorough_o purge_v hence_o arise_v this_o conclusion_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v and_o conjoin_v all_o these_o sort_n together_o both_o what_o be_v inject_v by_o satan_n and_o what_o arise_v from_o our_o own_o corruption_n it_o may_v not_o be_v deny_v but_o that_o our_o thought_n be_v general_o more_o evil_a than_o good_a more_o upon_o worldly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v unsanctified_a altogether_o see_v the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o our_o thought_n either_o way_n incline_v for_o so_o both_o good_a and_o evil_a thought_n be_v sinful_a but_o the_o trial_n arise_v from_o the_o diverse_a entertainment_n of_o they_o that_o though_o as_o they_o arise_v in_o our_o heart_n they_o be_v evil_a without_o consent_n and_o so_o though_o inject_v by_o satan_n yet_o can_v possible_o be_v so_o sever_v from_o corruption_n but_o by_o some_o mixture_n therewith_o they_o will_v prove_v also_o evil_a yet_o if_o we_o shall_v dislike_v of_o they_o and_o by_o prayer_n humble_v ourselves_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o quash_a of_o they_o and_o make_v they_o occasion_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o heavenly_a motion_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v contrary_a thereunto_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o though_o they_o be_v evil_a yet_o they_o be_v sanctify_v unto_o we_o rom_n 7.20.21_o for_o as_o good_a motion_n reject_v be_v thereby_o to_o we_o unsanctified_a so_o also_o even_o evil_a thought_n repel_v and_o resist_v may_v be_v sanctify_v because_o the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n be_v not_o from_o the_o motion_n themselves_o or_o their_o object_n but_o from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o regenerate_v will_n either_o entertain_v the_o good_a or_o reject_v the_o evil_a &_o so_o a_o evil_a thought_n be_v subdue_v or_o rectify_v may_v prove_v good_a &_o occasion_n more_o good_a &_o a_o good_a thought_n be_v neglect_v &_o pervert_v may_v be_v evil_a and_o a_o occasion_n also_o of_o much_o more_o evil_a the_o satisfaction_n hereof_o consist_v in_o this_o consideration_n that_o as_o all_o our_o thought_n be_v natural_o evil_a so_o even_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n without_o marvelous_a preparation_n and_o watchfulness_n evil_a thought_n will_v either_o go_v along_o with_o or_o else_o begin_v our_o best_a action_n though_o we_o set_v upon_o duty_n which_o in_o themselves_o be_v good_a yet_o usual_o we_o begin_v with_o unprepared_a or_o unsanctified_a thought_n as_o not_o out_o of_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n not_o as_o in_o god_n presence_n not_o to_o his_o glory_n but_o careless_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n receyve_v the_o word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n pray_v as_o to_o man_n and_o carnal_o for_o vain_a glory_n and_o by_o respect_n so_o that_o indeed_o ordinary_o our_o best_a thought_n in_o god_n service_n be_v not_o only_o not_o good_a in_o these_o respect_n but_o be_v sufficient_a to_o challenge_v the_o whole_a action_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o therefore_o here_o the_o trial_n be_v not_o so_o much_o how_o we_o begin_v for_o corruption_n likely_a will_v be_v sure_a to_o share_v herein_o and_o so_o to_o serve_v itself_o rather_o then_o god_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o we_o go_v on_o how_o corruption_n be_v master_v and_o grace_n prevayle_v holy_a thought_n grow_v more_o frequent_a and_o seasonable_a enlive_v the_o business_n nay_o principal_o consider_v we_o how_o we_o make_v a_o end_n rather_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o interruption_n and_o exorbitancy_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o so_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n than_o any_o whit_n stand_v upon_o the_o worth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v for_o thus_o shall_v we_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o crown_v his_o own_o work_n and_o so_o interess_v ourselves_o in_o christ_n shall_v be_v accept_v in_o he_o above_o any_o worth_n in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o enable_v by_o he_o to_o further_a constancy_n in_o well_o do_v and_o so_o though_o we_o have_v more_o time_n give_v for_o worldly_a occasion_n and_o therefore_o may_v imagine_v that_o we_o now_o have_v ability_n to_o let_v loose_a our_o thought_n upon_o they_o yet_o see_v no_o creature_n of_o god_n be_v good_a unless_o it_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n therefore_o the_o holy_a heart_n labour_v to_o make_v all_o thing_n pure_a and_o holy_a thereto_o by_o sanctify_v the_o same_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o a_o wise_a christian_a labour_n to_o be_v a_o law_n unto_o himself_o even_o in_o his_o outward_a liberty_n use_v the_o world_n as_o if_o he_o use_v it_o not_o and_o though_o his_o mind_n may_v be_v employ_v in_o worldly_a occasion_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o set_v upon_o they_o neither_o do_v he_o begin_v they_o with_o carnal_a occasion_n but_o in_o obedience_n providence_n of_o his_o god_n but_o make_v still_o his_o request_n manifest_a unto_o his_o god_n who_o will_v never_o fail_v &_o forsake_v his_o child_n and_o so_o have_v his_o conversation_n in_o violence_n ostentation_n as_o david_n do_v and_o so_o make_v a_o foul_a bread_n even_o into_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o heart_n yet_o herein_o also_o may_v they_o have_v some_o trial_n of_o their_o sincerity_n by_o the_o power_n of_o their_o thought_n as_o that_o they_o be_v more_o sensible_a of_o sin_n the_o more_o they_o be_v deceive_v by_o it_o 2_o they_o be_v more_o humble_v for_o
