word_n and_o light_n of_o the_o blind_a mat._n 5._o 14._o rom._n 2._o 19_o this_o work_n of_o illumination_n or_o enlighten_v it_o be_v that_o whereby_o the_o spirit_n first_o purge_v the_o mind_n &_o understanding_n from_o darkness_n and_o vanity_n which_o be_v in_o it_o through_o ignorance_n of_o god_n also_o the_o judgement_n from_o that_o perverse_a corruption_n of_o it_o in_o thing_n belong_v to_o god_n whereby_o it_o can_v not_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o good_a and_o evil_n and_o second_o put_v into_o the_o understanding_n and_o judgement_n a_o new_a light_n of_o knowledge_n and_o discretion_n whereby_o the_o soul_n know_v and_o discern_v aright_o the_o truth_n of_o salvation_n by_o christ_n even_o particular_o in_o the_o several_a doctrine_n this_o enlighten_v be_v twofold_a the_o first_o be_v general_a and_o slight_a whereby_o the_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v unto_o a_o idle_a and_o unfruitful_a knowledge_n of_o god_n the_o latter_a be_v a_o special_a and_o through-enlightening_a unto_o a_o diligent_a and_o profitable_a understanding_n of_o christ._n these_o two_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n whereof_o the_o one_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v have_v the_o other_o be_v give_v to_o none_o but_o to_o the_o elect_n though_o they_o both_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o be_v of_o the_o same_o thing_n yet_o they_o differ_v very_o much_o for_o first_o the_o knowledge_n which_o a_o godly_a man_n receive_v in_o his_o illumination_n it_o be_v certain_a and_o distinct_a so_o as_o he_o be_v able_a to_o apply_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n judgement_n to_o the_o humble_v of_o himself_o and_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o raise_v and_o comfort_v himself_o the_o wicked_a by_o their_o knowledge_n can_v do_v so_o have_v but_o a_o naked_a and_o bare_a speculation_n without_o any_o particular_a application_n of_o the_o same_o for_o humble_v or_o comfort_n again_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o godly_a be_v sufficient_a to_o direct_v they_o general_o and_o in_o every_o particular_a duty_n whether_o it_o be_v for_o avoid_v evil_a or_o for_o do_v any_o good_a but_o the_o insight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v unsufficient_a and_o unable_a to_o direct_v they_o in_o their_o singular_a and_o particular_a action_n either_o for_o omission_n of_o evil_a or_o practice_v of_o good_a the_o former_a knowledge_n be_v full_a of_o good_a work_n and_o direct_v they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v to_o do_v good_a thing_n constant_o but_o the_o latter_a be_v barren_a and_o fade_v before_o the_o end_n or_o leave_v they_o in_o the_o end_n in_o respect_n of_o these_o difference_n the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o elect_a for_o the_o clearness_n sufficiency_n and_o certainty_n of_o it_o be_v liken_v to_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o reprobate_n for_o the_o confusedness_n unsufficiency_n &_o unstablenesse_n be_v compare_v to_o the_o lightning_n which_o do_v not_o give_v any_o certain_a light_n it_o do_v not_o continue_v any_o certain_a time_n and_o when_o it_o be_v go_v man_n see_v worse_a than_o before_o so_o do_v it_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o wicked_a for_o their_o knowledge_n do_v soon_o vanish_v and_o while_o it_o last_v it_o be_v very_o uncertain_a and_o there_o be_v in_o they_o afterward_o great_a and_o more_o dangerous_a darkness_n then_o before_o for_o because_o they_o wink_v with_o their_o eye_n and_o make_v their_o heart_n fat_a strive_v willing_o not_o to_o see_v that_o they_o can_v but_o see_v wilful_o blind_n and_o harden_v themselves_o therefore_o as_o a_o punishment_n of_o this_o sin_n they_o be_v give_v over_o to_o have_v dull_a and_o heavy_a eye_n and_o ear_n so_o as_o they_o shall_v see_v and_o not_o perceive_v hear_v and_o not_o understand_v heart_n what_o may_v this_o signific_a or_o how_o may_v it_o differ_v from_o the_o former_a work_n of_o enlighten_v apollo_n by_o the_o heart_n according_a to_o scripture_n phrase_n heart_n be_v signify_v not_o the_o fleshy_a part_n of_o the_o body_n which_o be_v think_v to_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o life_n and_o seat_n of_o the_o affection_n but_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n especial_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n for_o the_o heart_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o chair_n of_o estate_n for_o the_o soul_n where_o the_o soul_n show_v herself_o in_o presence_n therefore_o it_o be_v so_o often_o put_v for_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o chief_a power_n thereof_o as_o god_n open_v lydiaes_n heart_n that_o be_v her_o soul_n now_o this_o open_n sheweth_z and_o teach_v we_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o a_o chest_n fast_o lock_v and_o bar_v into_o which_o while_o it_o be_v so_o there_o can_v no_o treasure_n be_v put_v so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n before_o our_o effectual_a call_n it_o be_v close_o shut_v up_o and_o lock_v up_o through_o ignorance_n and_o unbelief_n &_o sin_n so_o as_o no_o save_a grace_n can_v drop_v into_o it_o but_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o all_o sight_n and_o feel_n of_o god_n peculiar_a mercy_n therefore_o this_o open_n of_o the_o heart_n beside_o the_o illumination_n already_o speak_v of_o whereby_o the_o spirit_n pierce_v into_o the_o mind_n endue_v it_o with_o that_o heavenly_a light_n before_o touch_v that_o it_o may_v clear_o and_o certain_o understand_v the_o whole_a truth_n of_o the_o word_n but_o chief_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o have_v also_o the_o move_a and_o bow_v of_o the_o will_n with_o affection_n to_o receive_v and_o embrace_v this_o promise_n the_o spirit_n indue_a the_o soul_n with_o a_o sweet_a feel_n of_o the_o most_o merciful_a goodness_n of_o god_n therein_o and_o of_o these_o two_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o open_v of_o the_o eye_n and_o the_o heart_n arise_v that_o three_o evil_a company_n alone_o but_o whatsoever_o occasion_n of_o sin_n by_o sin_n place_n person_n time_n or_o thing_n must_v be_v take_v heed_n of_o for_o occasion_n be_v take_v hold_v of_o give_v great_a strength_n to_o our_o sinful_a nature_n but_o be_v take_v heed_n of_o do_v much_o pull_v it_o in_o i_o will_v also_o counsel_v man_n sometime_o to_o fast_a and_o refrain_v from_o meat_n and_o all_o strength_n at_o all_o nor_o the_o action_n of_o read_v or_o preach_v as_o it_o be_v perform_v by_o man_n how_o well_o soever_o they_o be_v as_o weak_a as_o water_n to_o this_o purpose_n of_o believe_v as_o cause_n and_o effect_v act_v 11._o 20_o 21._o and_o 14._o 1._o etc._n etc._n i_o do_v beside_o read_v of_o innumerable_a soul_n even_o by_o thousand_o at_o once_o call_v to_o christ_n thereof_o as_o to_o provide_v for_o it_o good_a diet_n by_o the_o wholesome_a preach_n of_o the_o word_n ordinary_o on_o the_o sabbath_n preach_v which_o together_o with_o catechise_v and_o the_o benefit_n catechise_v of_o public_a prayer_n and_o sacrament_n shall_v in_o god_n appoint_a prayer_n hour_n effect_v this_o bless_a work_n of_o a_o true_a call_n sacrament_n to_o their_o present_a comfort_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n where_o these_o mean_n be_v not_o at_o all_o use_v if_o so_o be_v they_o may_v be_v have_v or_o some_o and_o not_o all_o or_o use_v also_o and_o perfiter_n of_o it_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n lay_v upon_o we_o to_o serve_v the_o gracious_a providence_n of_o almighty_a god_n as_o instrument_n therein_o by_o attend_v and_o denial_n and_o displeasure_n of_o his_o own_o corrupt_a heart_n the_o civil_a man_n do_v not_o take_v think_v nor_o trouble_v his_o head_n about_o the_o please_a of_o god_n in_o the_o good_a he_o do_v nor_o in_o leave_v evil_n for_o the_o offence_n of_o god_n but_o seek_v and_o study_v to_o please_v himself_o and_o such_o who_o favour_n he_o desire_v to_o live_v in_o order_v his_o course_n to_o his_o own_o and_o their_o like_n three_o whereas_o a_o civil_a man_n be_v very_o careful_a in_o duty_n that_o concern_v affair_n and_o deal_n with_o man_n that_o he_o may_v get_v a_o good_a report_n that_o way_n and_o do_v religious_a duty_n cold_o and_o of_o custom_n the_o sanctify_a man_n though_o he_o will_v not_o be_v negligent_a in_o work_n that_o belong_v to_o his_o call_n yet_o he_o be_v
