of_o we_o as_o we_o be_v transport_v by_o this_o pestilent_a humour_n but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o purpose_n and_o end_n to_o which_o he_o have_v ordain_v us._n 2_o we_o be_v hereby_o teach_v wise_o not_o to_o excuse_v sin_n by_o these_o melancholic_a mood_n because_o indeed_o it_o secure_v to_o do_v the_o sin_n in_o that_o it_o become_v a_o cloak_n to_o defend_v the_o same_o as_o he_o that_o in_o his_o drunkenness_n kill_v a_o man_n be_v guilty_a of_o a_o double_a offence_n the_o one_o that_o he_o commit_v murder_n the_o other_o that_o he_o do_v it_o in_o that_o humour_n so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o case_n of_o melancholy_n and_o yet_o here_o be_v exceed_a comfort_n to_o such_o as_o be_v trouble_v in_o mind_n and_o through_o distemper_n break_v out_o into_o fearful_a course_n and_o speech_n that_o see_v the_o lord_n will_v not_o impute_v unto_o they_o what_o they_o advise_o intend_v not_o therefore_o because_o melancholy_a may_v father_n that_o on_o they_o which_o they_o do_v not_o or_o further_o they_o to_o what_o they_o do_v not_o intend_v the_o lord_n will_v not_o impute_v what_o they_o do_v not_o or_o what_o in_o their_o best_a advice_n they_o will_v not_o chap._n x._o of_o vain_a &_o wander_a thought_n intrude_a into_o and_o interrupt_v holy_a duty_n hitherto_o concern_v blasphemous_a and_o melancholy_a thought_n extraordinary_o and_o not_o so_o common_o trouble_v the_o saint_n together_o with_o their_o several_a cause_n effect_n and_o remedy_n there_o remain_v yet_o to_o consider_v of_o another_o troop_n of_o thought_n ordinary_o and_o frequent_o molest_v the_o saint_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n as_o tend_v to_o challenge_v the_o same_o of_o hypocrisy_n or_o lest_o so_o to_o interrupt_v &_o cool_v the_o sense_n as_o that_o either_o they_o be_v deprive_v altogether_o of_o the_o present_a comfort_n thereof_o or_o at_o the_o least_o they_o be_v hinder_v thereby_o of_o such_o entire_a communion_n with_o god_n therein_o as_o they_o hearty_o desire_v &_o so_o receive_v much_o discomfort_n and_o confusion_n thereby_o &_o therefore_o very_o necessary_a be_v it_o both_o 1_o to_o know_v what_o these_o thought_n be_v 2_o to_o discern_v the_o occasion_n and_o true_a cause_n thereof_o 3_o to_o discover_v the_o effect_n thereof_o 4_o to_o prescribe_v the_o remedy_n against_o the_o same_o because_o though_o we_o can_v be_v altogether_o free_a from_o the_o same_o yet_o we_o may_v both_o gracious_o lessen_v and_o subdue_v such_o thought_n and_o also_o may_v make_v profitable_a use_n of_o such_o as_o do_v necessary_o accompany_v we_o therein_o examine_v we_o therefore_o first_o the_o nature_n of_o these_o thought_n what_o these_o be_v they_o be_v unseasonable_a and_o disorderly_a thought_n arise_v from_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n occasion_v by_o outward_a object_n and_o sometime_o inject_v by_o satan_n contrary_a and_o beside_o the_o business_n we_o have_v in_o hand_n tend_v to_o interrupt_v and_o confound_v we_o therein_o which_o make_v we_o that_o we_o may_v not_o rest_v in_o our_o own_o righteousness_n but_o whole_o rely_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n first_o i_o say_v they_o be_v unseasonable_a and_o disorderly_a as_o not_o sort_v with_o the_o present_a occasion_n not_o lead_v we_o along_o therein_o not_o accompany_v the_o same_o and_o so_o if_o they_o be_v evil_a or_o good_a they_o be_v disclaim_v 2_o i_o add_v that_o they_o either_o spring_n from_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n which_o be_v but_o in_o part_n regenerate_v &_o so_o necessary_o yield_v store_n thereof_o in_o that_o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n that_o so_o we_o may_v have_v a_o tâ—yall_a of_o the_o truth_n â—f_n what_o we_o do_v by_o this_o combat_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o conquest_n thereof_o or_o 2_o they_o be_v occasion_v from_o outward_a object_n affect_v the_o sense_n whereof_o we_o be_v general_o too_o careless_a &_o prodigal_a 3_o or_o they_o be_v cast_v in_o by_o satan_n in_o our_o most_o serious_a intention_n to_o interrupt_v and_o so_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o they_o last_o i_o discover_v the_o end_n hereof_o that_o hereby_o be_v convince_v of_o our_o imperfection_n herein_o we_o may_v be_v send_v unto_o christ_n or_o else_o hereby_o we_o may_v be_v make_v inexcusable_a if_o yet_o we_o shall_v stand_v upon_o the_o worth_n of_o our_o well_o do_v the_o cause_n the_o flesh_n and_o to_o nourish_v the_o heart_n in_o the_o ignorance_n of_o itself_o do_v by_o the_o divine_a justice_n herein_o prove_v it_o own_o confusion_n as_o bewitch_v the_o heart_n with_o a_o conceit_n of_o carnal_a happiness_n and_o secret_a atheism_n as_o if_o god_n be_v not_o a_o spirit_n that_o he_o be_v like_a unto_o man_n to_o be_v please_v with_o thousand_o of_o ram_n and_o ten_o thousand_o river_n of_o oil_n that_o either_o he_o be_v asleep_a or_o in_o pursuit_n of_o his_o enemy_n and_o so_o must_v be_v awaken_v and_o charm_v with_o such_o chanting_n and_o brutish_a noise_n in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n and_o so_o thereby_o be_v just_o give_v up_o of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v pester_v with_o carnal_a and_o vain_a thought_n for_o the_o confusion_n of_o it_o wisdom_n 9_o add_v we_o hereunto_o that_o common_a disease_n which_o worldling_n be_v too_o much_o possess_v withal_o namely_o covetousness_n and_o greedy_a desire_n of_o worldly_a gain_n who_o measure_v lord_n may_v be_v justify_v in_o their_o just_a confusion_n in_o make_v they_o the_o executioner_n of_o their_o own_o destruction_n the_o remedy_n hereof_o how_o we_o shall_v resist_v they_o by_o some_o such_o like_a as_o these_o mean_n 1_o if_o we_o tremble_v at_o the_o first_o motion_n of_o they_o and_o abhor_v they_o 2_o and_o be_v more_o trouble_v with_o they_o then_o with_o any_o desperate_a thought_n tend_v to_o our_o own_o hurt_n 3_o that_o we_o offer_v they_o up_o to_o god_n in_o prayer_n as_o ezechias_n do_v the_o letter_n of_o rabsaka_n 4_o and_o humble_a ourselves_o with_o extraordinary_a grief_n and_o zeal_n against_o ourselves_o in_o regard_n thereof_o 5_o make_v more_o conscience_n of_o take_v god_n name_n in_o our_o mouth_n and_o so_o general_o of_o all_o holy_a duty_n 6_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o a_o more_o serious_a meditation_n of_o the_o majesty_n power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n special_o when_o as_o in_o regard_n that_o these_o thought_n be_v inject_v by_o satan_n though_o they_o be_v occasion_v by_o our_o corruption_n yet_o here_o the_o snare_n may_v be_v to_o divert_v the_o the_o blame_n from_o ourselves_o and_o lay_v it_o upon_o satan_n and_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v hinder_v of_o the_o search_n of_o our_o heart_n give_v the_o occasion_n and_o so_o from_o the_o duery_n of_o repentance_n therefore_o be_v we_o wise_a herein_o soâ—_n to_o discern_v between_o thing_n that_o differ_v that_o neither_o all_o the_o burden_n may_v be_v lay_v upon_o satan_n nor_o upon_o ourselves_o but_o learn_v we_o thus_o to_o divide_v this_o tentation_n self_n because_o we_o thus_o dishonour_n god_n we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o live_v etc._n etc._n or_o else_o these_o fearful_a thought_n infer_v that_o we_o have_v no_o hope_n no_o hold_n in_o god_n and_o therefore_o cause_n to_o despair_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o so_o to_o expose_v ourselves_o to_o his_o vengeance_n this_o fall_v out_o here_o the_o trial_n be_v that_o whereas_o natural_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o trouble_v with_o what_o touch_v we_o so_o near_o then_o with_o that_o which_o concern_v god_n if_o now_o these_o diverse_a thought_n eftsoon_o at_o the_o same_o time_n assalt_v thought_n then_o that_o our_o own_o estate_n be_v hazard_v by_o the_o other_o this_o be_v a_o true_a sign_n of_o grace_n and_o a_o gracious_a testimony_n that_o we_o shâ—ll_v get_v the_o mastery_n more_o liberty_n to_o prosecute_v his_o darling_n sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o have_v attain_a his_o desire_n than_o the_o former_a watch_n be_v discharge_v seven_o worse_a spirit_n enter_v in_o liberty_n be_v now_o grant_v to_o all_o looseness_n and_o evilnesse_n of_o thought_n 7_o or_o if_o he_o be_v disappoint_v of_o his_o hope_n and_o cross_v in_o his_o main_a desire_n yet_o here_o be_v his_o comfort_n to_o enlarge_v his_o thought_n therein_o to_o please_v himself_o thereby_o that_o his_o mind_n be_v as_o good_a though_o he_o can_v enjoy_v it_o he_o be_v rich_a in_o thought_n though_o he_o can_v be_v otherwise_o it_o do_v he_o good_a that_o he_o can_v still_o think_v thereon_o this_o give_v he_o hope_n that_o yet_o he_o shall_v prevail_v or_o this_o will_v please_v he_o that_o he_o can_v even_o think_v envious_o and_o disdainful_o of_o other_o that_o have_v attain_a what_o he_o have_v miss_v 8_o may_v we_o not_o observe_v it_o ordinary_a with_o wicked_a man_n that_o though_o they_o be_v out_o of_o date_n concern_v the_o act_n of_o some_o evil_n yet_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o insatiable_a desire_n of_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o main_a comfort_n to_o think_v it_o fare_v with_o the_o wicked_a in_o the_o order_n of_o their_o thought_n general_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o that_o their_o main_a practice_n be_v to_o curb_v and_o extinguish_v by_o all_o mean_n all_o good_a and_o holy_a thought_n but_o to_o give_v rhe_n bridle_v by_o all_o occasion_n to_o vain_a and_o wicked_a imagination_n as_o for_o the_o regenerate_v it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o he_o as_o his_o hart_n be_v settle_v upon_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o a_o better_a life_n so_o be_v all_o his_o thought_n intend_v and_o purpose_v thereunto_o and_o he_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n to_o nourish_v these_o holy_a thought_n by_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v and_o read_v the_o word_n and_o he_o avoyd_v careful_o all_o mean_n which_o may_v interrupt_v or_o divert_v the_o same_o as_o idleness_n ill_a company_n wicked_a object_n wander_v of_o his_o sense_n discontent_n 4_o if_o evil_a thought_n be_v raise_v up_o by_o nature_n corruption_n or_o
satan_n iniection_n or_o occasion_v from_o without_o by_o worldly_a object_n herein_o appear_v the_o wisdom_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n first_o not_o to_o give_v way_n unto_o they_o he_o suffer_v not_o his_o hart_n to_o run_v after_o his_o eye_n no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v delight_v with_o it_o to_o be_v ensnare_v with_o the_o pleasure_n thereof_o but_o by_o all_o mean_n seek_v to_o stifle_v the_o thought_n at_o the_o first_o rise_n if_o it_o be_v blasphemous_a and_o terrible_a he_o reason_v not_o with_o it_o but_o reject_v and_o abandon_v it_o with_o all_o detestation_n and_o horror_n by_o prayer_n repentance_n &_o humiliation_n repel_v the_o same_o if_o it_o be_v good_a &_o yet_o not_o seasonable_a as_o interrupt_v in_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o he_o reject_v it_o likewise_o speedy_o as_o a_o bratte_n of_o satan_n angel-like_o brightness_n and_o so_o continue_v with_o fear_n and_o watchfulness_n in_o his_o intend_a duty_n 5_o as_o for_o the_o sin_n he_o have_v by_o god_n mercy_n conquer_v as_o satan_n by_o renew_v the_o thought_n thereof_o seek_v to_o reenter_v so_o do_v he_o wise_o turn_v these_o thought_n to_o prevent_v reentry_n add_v withal_o not_o so_o much_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o sin_n past_a as_o the_o bitterness_n thereof_o what_o it_o have_v cost_v he_o already_o what_o a_o scar_n it_o have_v leave_v on_o he_o what_o a_o good_a god_n he_o have_v find_v in_o deliver_v he_o there_o from_o and_o so_o turn_v the_o thought_n of_o entice_a to_o sin_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o god_n exceed_v mercy_n in_o pardon_v the_o same_o and_o give_v he_o grace_n to_o subdue_v so_o hideous_a a_o monster_n his_o heart_n be_v take_v up_o and_o nourish_v with_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o in_o he_o be_v strengthen_v to_o resist_v tentation_n 6_o this_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o thought_n revive_v former_a sin_n breed_v in_o he_o more_o humility_n more_o fear_n of_o himself_o more_o watchfulness_n against_o new_a surprisal_n a_o daily_a renounce_n of_o himself_o and_o rely_v upon_o christ_n that_o so_o he_o may_v neither_o be_v tickle_v with_o new_a delight_n nor_o affright_v with_o horror_n of_o judgement_n at_o the_o ghastly_a appearance_n of_o they_o 7._o especial_o whereas_o satan_n will_v now_o shroud_v himself_o even_o under_o our_o holy_a purpose_n of_o humiliation_n either_o by_o raise_v up_o some_o tickle_a delight_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o we_o labour_v by_o most_o earnest_a and_o sorrowful_a thought_n to_o judge_v in_o our_o self_n or_o else_o mingle_v with_o these_o thought_n of_o sorrow_n melancholy_a passion_n to_o distract_v and_o divert_v they_o from_o the_o true_a end_n or_o else_o to_o eat_v out_o this_o flourish_a gourd_n of_o our_o most_o intentive_a &_o humble_a thought_n with_o some_o worm_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n desert_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o the_o holy_a heart_n need_v to_o keep_v a_o special_a watch_n herein_o do_v it_o not_o wise_o suspect_v itself_o in_o regard_n of_o these_o dead_a fly_n that_o be_v like_a to_o corrupt_v the_o most_o precious_a ointment_n and_o to_o deprive_v it_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o sound_a humiliation_n though_o not_o entice_v it_o again_o unto_o the_o same_o sin_n yet_o change_v it_o hereby_o into_o a_o more_o grievous_a and_o dangerous_a evil_n another_o point_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o watch_v over_o the_o thought_n ordinary_a to_o the_o elect_a where_o in_o he_o exceed_v the_o unregenerate_a be_v a_o wise_a single_v out_o and_o encounter_v of_o they_o as_o whereas_o there_o be_v no_o child_n of_o god_n but_o be_v subject_a to_o one_o sin_n above_o another_o therefore_o it_o be_v his_o especial_a care_n to_o curb_v his_o thought_n concern_v it_o though_o he_o neglect_v not_o any_o other_o yet_o principal_o he_o attend_v such_o thought_n as_o tend_v this_o way_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o as_o it_o usual_o fall_v out_o that_o as_o he_o shall_v find_v himself_o defective_a break_v of_o to_o company_n music_n so_o far_o be_v he_o from_o cherish_v and_o entertain_v the_o same_o above_o all_o he_o can_v endure_v if_o it_o may_v be_v to_o wake_v in_o the_o night_n alone_o it_o be_v his_o wisdom_n to_o drown_v his_o head_n to_o bedward_o that_o he_o may_v lie_v in_o his_o bed_n like_o a_o stone_n if_o he_o awake_v his_o next_o work_n be_v to_o toss_v and_o tumble_v his_o body_n that_o so_o the_o mind_n may_v not_o settle_v to_o any_o holy_a meditation_n if_o he_o dream_v of_o temporal_a good_a it_o grieve_v he_o that_o he_o have_v it_o not_o if_o he_o dream_v of_o evil_n it_o scare_n he_o to_o report_v of_o it_o once_o it_o be_v that_o he_o seldom_o or_o never_o dream_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n or_o if_o he_o do_v he_o account_v it_o as_o a_o dream_n and_o so_o it_o vanish_v especial_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o proper_a to_o the_o saint_n to_o be_v wise_a in_o entertain_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n and_o furnish_v the_o mind_n with_o holy_a meditation_n rejoice_v exceed_o in_o the_o now_o plentiful_a tender_a and_o gracious_a success_n thereof_o and_o grieve_v exceed_o either_o at_o any_o contrary_a motion_n or_o at_o the_o neglect_n &_o disappointment_n of_o good_a motion_n he_o know_v that_o by_o neglect_v such_o he_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n &_o so_o grow_v to_o a_o quench_n of_o the_o same_o and_o thereby_o be_v draw_v to_o despite_n the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n if_o not_o direct_o &_o by_o profession_n yet_o indirect_o and_o by_o a_o carnal_a opposition_n in_o slander_v interrupt_v we_o in_o the_o present_a occasion_n 5_o sometime_o they_o be_v profound_a and_o mystical_a such_o as_o neither_o ourselves_o nor_o other_o can_v tell_v what_o to_o make_v of_o answerable_a to_o our_o curious_a and_o presumptuous_a spirit_n desirous_a to_o pry_v into_o hide_a mystery_n and_o to_o rove_v after_o dream_n and_o revelation_n to_o confound_v our_o vain_a trust_n and_o confidence_n therein_o 6_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o be_v carnal_a and_o full_a of_o worldliness_n according_a to_o the_o common_a aim_n of_o profession_n which_o be_v currant_n in_o the_o world_n namely_o for_o profit_n pleasure_n etc._n etc._n as_o just_o convince_a our_o want_n of_o preparation_n and_o intention_n thereto_o and_o arise_v either_o from_o our_o own_o unstable_a heart_n or_o satan_n malice_n to_o divert_v we_o from_o what_o we_o have_v in_o hand_n 8_o and_o so_o according_a to_o our_o ignorance_n or_o unsettled_a judgement_n in_o the_o matter_n &_o manner_n of_o divine_a worship_n they_o be_v full_a of_o uncertainty_n and_o wander_n full_a of_o fear_n distraction_n and_o inconstancy_n the_o effect_n of_o these_o kind_n of_o thought_n be_v at_o the_o best_a they_o interrupt_v the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o so_o hinder_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o deprive_v the_o conscience_n of_o much_o comfort_n of_o the_o same_o but_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o sort_n give_v way_n unto_o they_o may_v prove_v occasion_n of_o prophanesse_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o secret_a atheism_n and_o also_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o carnal_a worship_n yea_o if_o they_o be_v not_o speedy_o qualify_v &_o suppress_v they_o may_v be_v occasion_n by_o it_o ckle_v the_o affection_n and_o procure_v consent_n thereto_o to_o break_v out_o into_o gross_a evil_n to_o the_o reproach_n of_o profession_n and_o wound_v of_o the_o conscience_n nay_o do_v it_o not_o fall_v out_o that_o when_o as_o these_o vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n accompany_v we_o in_o divine_a worship_n occasion_v from_o our_o want_n of_o preparation_n thereto_o and_o conscience_n thereof_o to_o make_v we_o more_o holy_a &_o careful_a therein_o yet_o by_o these_o thought_n we_o may_v oft_o time_n measure_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o so_o grow_v either_o to_o conceive_v base_o thereof_o and_o thereby_o fall_v to_o plain_a formality_n and_o customaâ—inesse_n therein_o or_o else_o on_o the_o other_o side_n conceive_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o be_v so_o heavenly_a and_o ourselves_o so_o carnal_a and_o unable_a to_o perform_v the_o same_o through_o a_o scrupulous_a fear_n of_o defile_v the_o same_o and_o so_o make_v it_o unprofitable_a unto_o we_o we_o grow_v at_o length_n to_o this_o holiness_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v more_o ready_a and_o spiritual_a when_o we_o come_v to_o set_v duty_n especial_o labour_n we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o repentance_n daily_o for_o all_o know_a sin_n that_o so_o we_o may_v more_o bold_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o worship_n and_o may_v more_o free_o and_o entire_o converse_v with_o he_o therein_o because_o sin_v unrepented_a of_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o haunt_v and_o interrupt_v we_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v most_o good_a as_o to_o defile_v the_o same_o so_o in_o the_o wise_a mercy_n of_o god_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o the_o clear_n of_o the_o score_n lest_o if_o we_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o our_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v our_o prayer_n psal_n 66.18_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v to_o begin_v all_o holy_a exercise_n with_o confession_n and_o deprecation_n for_o our_o sin_n especial_o such_o particular_a as_o lie_v upon_o we_o that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o fly_v in_o our_o face_n when_o we_o seek_v the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n so_o if_o we_o conclude_v all_o holy_a duty_n with_o confession_n of_o our_o fayling_n therein_o especial_o of_o the_o vanity_n of_o this_o rule_n we_o may_v further_o determine_v of_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n in_o our_o general_a course_n by_o our_o very_a thought_n namely_o by_o the_o entertainment_n or_o disclaim_v of_o they_o but_o still_o it_o will_v be_v reply_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o our_o thought_n because_o we_o can_v discern_v they_o 2_o therefore_o we_o must_v answer_v hereunto_o by_o a_o distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v our_o thought_n in_o general_a of_o all_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o discern_v they_o so_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o this_o trial_n because_o this_o only_a belong_v unto_o god_n so_o to_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o discern_v this_o infinite_a variety_n of_o the_o thought_n thereof_o and_o our_o god_n will_v require_v no_o more_o at_o our_o hand_n then_o what_o he_o give_v namely_o so_o far_o to_o discern_v our_o heart_n as_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o which_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o holy_a order_n in_o our_o thought_n that_o they_o may_v intend_v what_o we_o be_v employ_v in_o and_o endeavour_v to_o diminish_v the_o multitude_n and_o distraction_n of_o they_o by_o watch_v against_o evil_a thought_n &_o reject_v they_o and_o cherish_v the_o good_a by_o exercise_v the_o general_a calling_n with_o more_o constancy_n and_o humility_n and_o our_o civil_a calling_n with_o more_o heavenly_a mind_n do_v all_o thing_n as_o in_o god_n presence_n to_o his_o glory_n of_o which_o particular_o before_o and_o last_o if_o we_o do_v not_o wilful_o give_v way_n to_o our_o evil_a thought_n as_o if_o they_o be_v free_a or_o seek_v to_o rebel_v against_o the_o good_a reclaim_v we_o from_o evil_n but_o wise_o labour_v to_o observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n snub_v for_o evil_a and_o so_o to_o prevent_v consent_n and_o act_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o conscionable_o entertain_v all_o good_a and_o holy_a motion_n by_o prayer_n and_o diligent_a actuate_a thereof_o which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v have_v comfort_n of_o sincerity_n that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v we_o labour_v to_o preserve_v this_o holy_a government_n and_o what_o we_o know_v not_o shall_v not_o be_v require_v of_o us._n and_o above_o all_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o though_o we_o know_v nothing_o by_o ourselves_o yet_o therein_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v 1_o cor._n 4.4.5_o so_o hereby_o we_o be_v cast_v upon_o the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o the_o acceptance_n of_o our_o person_n above_o all_o our_o own_o worth_n or_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o chap._n xiiii_o case_n of_o conscience_n to_o be_v resolve_v herein_o be_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o unsanctified_a thought_n that_o we_o think_v more_o and_o often_o of_o earthly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n the_o resolution_n hereof_o consist_v in_o a_o wise_a distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n whereof_o some_o be_v inject_v by_o satan_n and_o make_v our_o own_o by_o like_v and_o entertain_v of_o they_o other_o arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n not_o thorough_o purge_v hence_o arise_v this_o conclusion_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v and_o conjoin_v all_o these_o sort_n together_o both_o what_o be_v inject_v by_o satan_n and_o what_o arise_v from_o our_o own_o corruption_n it_o may_v not_o be_v deny_v but_o that_o our_o thought_n be_v general_o more_o evil_a than_o good_a more_o upon_o worldly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v unsanctified_a altogether_o see_v the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o our_o thought_n either_o way_n incline_v for_o so_o both_o good_a and_o evil_a thought_n be_v sinful_a but_o the_o trial_n arise_v from_o the_o diverse_a entertainment_n of_o they_o that_o though_o as_o they_o arise_v in_o our_o heart_n they_o be_v evil_a without_o consent_n and_o so_o though_o inject_v by_o satan_n yet_o can_v possible_o be_v so_o sever_v from_o corruption_n but_o by_o some_o mixture_n therewith_o they_o will_v prove_v also_o evil_a yet_o if_o we_o shall_v dislike_v of_o they_o and_o by_o prayer_n humble_v ourselves_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o quash_a of_o they_o and_o make_v they_o occasion_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o heavenly_a motion_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v contrary_a thereunto_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o though_o they_o be_v evil_a yet_o they_o be_v sanctify_v unto_o we_o rom_n 7.20.21_o for_o as_o good_a motion_n reject_v be_v thereby_o to_o we_o unsanctified_a so_o also_o even_o evil_a thought_n repel_v and_o resist_v may_v be_v sanctify_v because_o the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n be_v not_o from_o the_o motion_n themselves_o or_o their_o object_n but_o from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o regenerate_v will_n either_o entertain_v the_o good_a or_o reject_v the_o evil_a &_o so_o a_o evil_a thought_n be_v subdue_v or_o rectify_v may_v prove_v good_a &_o occasion_n more_o good_a &_o a_o good_a thought_n be_v neglect_v &_o pervert_v may_v be_v evil_a and_o a_o occasion_n also_o of_o much_o more_o evil_a the_o satisfaction_n hereof_o consist_v in_o this_o consideration_n that_o as_o all_o our_o thought_n be_v natural_o evil_a so_o even_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n without_o marvelous_a preparation_n and_o watchfulness_n evil_a thought_n will_v either_o go_v along_o with_o or_o else_o begin_v our_o best_a action_n though_o we_o set_v upon_o duty_n which_o in_o themselves_o be_v good_a yet_o usual_o we_o begin_v with_o unprepared_a or_o unsanctified_a thought_n as_o not_o out_o of_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n not_o as_o in_o god_n presence_n not_o to_o his_o glory_n but_o careless_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n receyve_v the_o word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n pray_v as_o to_o man_n and_o carnal_o for_o vain_a glory_n and_o by_o respect_n so_o that_o indeed_o ordinary_o our_o best_a thought_n in_o god_n service_n be_v not_o only_o not_o good_a in_o these_o respect_n but_o be_v sufficient_a to_o challenge_v the_o whole_a action_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o therefore_o here_o the_o trial_n be_v not_o so_o much_o how_o we_o begin_v for_o corruption_n likely_a will_v be_v sure_a to_o share_v herein_o and_o so_o to_o serve_v itself_o rather_o then_o god_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o we_o go_v on_o how_o corruption_n be_v master_v and_o grace_n prevayle_v holy_a thought_n grow_v more_o frequent_a and_o seasonable_a enlive_v the_o business_n nay_o principal_o consider_v we_o how_o we_o make_v a_o end_n rather_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o interruption_n and_o exorbitancy_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o so_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n than_o any_o whit_n stand_v upon_o the_o worth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v for_o thus_o shall_v we_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o crown_v his_o own_o work_n and_o so_o interess_v ourselves_o in_o christ_n shall_v be_v accept_v in_o he_o above_o any_o worth_n in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o enable_v by_o he_o to_o further_a constancy_n in_o well_o do_v and_o so_o though_o we_o have_v more_o time_n give_v for_o worldly_a occasion_n and_o therefore_o may_v imagine_v that_o we_o now_o have_v ability_n to_o let_v loose_a our_o thought_n upon_o they_o yet_o see_v no_o creature_n of_o god_n be_v good_a unless_o it_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n therefore_o the_o holy_a heart_n labour_v to_o make_v all_o thing_n pure_a and_o holy_a thereto_o by_o sanctify_v the_o same_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o a_o wise_a christian_a labour_n to_o be_v a_o law_n unto_o himself_o even_o in_o his_o outward_a liberty_n use_v the_o world_n as_o if_o he_o use_v it_o not_o and_o though_o his_o mind_n may_v be_v employ_v in_o worldly_a occasion_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o set_v upon_o they_o neither_o do_v he_o begin_v they_o with_o carnal_a occasion_n but_o in_o obedience_n to_o god_n will_v and_o desire_v to_o glorify_v he_o therein_o as_o to_o lay_v up_o a_o good_a foundation_n thereby_o against_o the_o life_n to_o come_v 1._o tim._n 16.19_o and_o so_o he_o go_v forward_o therein_o with_o spiritual_a affection_n as_o to_o fit_v himself_o to_o his_o general_a call_n and_o benefit_n the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o so_o he_o conclude_v they_o with_o holy_a thought_n of_o praise_v god_n abase_v of_o himself_o cast_v his_o care_n upon_o god_n and_o resign_v himself_o to_o his_o bless_a will_n not_o be_v careful_a in_o any_o thing_n as_o distrust_v the_o providence_n of_o his_o god_n but_o make_v still_o his_o request_n manifest_a unto_o his_o god_n who_o will_v never_o fail_v &_o forsake_v his_o child_n and_o so_o have_v his_o conversation_n in_o
