where_o they_o all_o meet_v and_o where_o they_o all_o rage_n and_o contend_v the_o poor_a man_n in_o this_o case_n will_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v like_o the_o trouble_a sea_n when_o it_o can_v rest_v who_o water_n cast_v up_o mire_n and_o dirt_n that_o be_v filth_n and_o wickedness_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o disquiet_n and_o tumult_n confusion_n and_o agony_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o such_o filth_n and_o wickedness_n for_o there_o be_v no_o peace_n to_o the_o wicked_a say_v god_n and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o what_o god_n say_v be_v true_a for_o when_o our_o own_o thought_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o misery_n which_o they_o bring_v upon_o we_o they_o do_v therefore_o so_o bring_v because_o we_o have_v offend_v and_o displease_v our_o god_n they_o do_v by_o so_o do_v add_v one_o great_a misery_n to_o all_o our_o other_o misery_n for_o in_o all_o other_o affliction_n we_o have_v still_o a_o place_n of_o refuge_n leave_v and_o like_o a_o city_n besiege_v though_o all_o our_o communication_n with_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o world_n be_v hinder_v and_o intercept_v yet_o our_o intercourse_n with_o heaven_n be_v still_o leave_v free_a and_o open_a and_o in_o god_n we_o have_v a_o sure_a retreat_n but_o when_o our_o misery_n spring_v from_o our_o own_o wickedness_n we_o do_v at_o the_o same_o time_n lose_v our_o happiness_n and_o our_o hope_n of_o relief_n too_o because_o our_o misery_n come_v from_o his_o hand_n who_o have_v all_o relief_n and_o all_o happiness_n in_o his_o own_o disposal_n i_o have_v describe_v these_o thing_n in_o a_o plain_a familiar_a and_o natural_a way_n because_o i_o will_v have_v people_n convince_v of_o their_o truth_n without_o the_o trouble_n or_o expense_n of_o a_o trial._n for_o though_o i_o will_v have_v they_o try_v whether_o goodness_n will_v not_o make_v they_o happy_a yet_o i_o will_v not_o have_v they_o try_v whether_o wickedness_n will_v not_o make_v they_o miserable_a for_o the_o experiment_n in_o this_o case_n will_v be_v too_o dear_a and_o costly_a and_o that_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o which_o destroy_v our_o peace_n by_o rob_v we_o of_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n and_o if_o man_n be_v but_o in_o some_o moderate_a degree_n satisfy_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o these_o thing_n it_o may_v be_v hope_v and_o god_n grant_v that_o our_o hope_n do_v not_o deceive_v we_o that_o they_o will_v by_o that_o mean_n be_v engage_v to_o try_v whether_o holiness_n will_v make_v they_o happy_a or_o no._n for_o now_o they_o have_v a_o fair_a and_o far_a probability_n of_o success_n to_o invite_v they_o to_o such_o a_o trial_n because_o holiness_n and_o wickedness_n be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o our_o reason_n will_v teach_v we_o more_o than_o bare_o to_o conjecture_v that_o they_o must_v produce_v contrary_a essect_v for_o if_o as_o we_o have_v see_v misery_n confusion_n and_o agony_n be_v sure_a to_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o wickedness_n it_o may_v the_o more_o reasonable_o be_v expect_v that_o the_o effect_n of_o holiness_n shall_v be_v joy_n and_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v the_o more_o reasonable_o expect_v also_o that_o man_n shall_v be_v persuade_v to_o pursue_v their_o happiness_n by_o the_o practice_n of_o holiness_n and_o it_o may_v be_v far_o expect_v yet_o that_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o persuade_v because_o which_o yet_o may_v seem_v strange_a there_o be_v hardly_o any_o wicked_a man_n though_o he_o be_v rank_v among_o those_o who_o the_o world_n do_v common_o account_v profligate_v but_o who_o yet_o have_v so_o much_o knowledge_n of_o the_o comfort_n of_o holiness_n as_o might_n will_v he_o but_o use_v his_o natural_a reason_n in_o the_o case_n engage_v he_o to_o attempt_v the_o increase_n of_o such_o his_o comfort_n by_o become_v holy_a for_o though_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o many_o perhaps_o of_o most_o sin_n yet_o he_o can_v be_v guilty_a of_o all_o for_o sin_n be_v not_o only_o a_o absurdity_n in_o itself_o and_o a_o downright_a contradiction_n to_o all_o sober_a reason_n but_o it_o be_v in_o many_o case_n a_o contradiction_n also_o to_o itself_o for_o one_o sin_n shall_v stand_v in_o such_o opposition_n to_o another_o that_o it_o shall_v in_o a_o manner_n be_v impossible_a for_o both_o of_o they_o to_o be_v retainer_n to_o the_o same_o man._n for_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a to_o conceive_v that_o a_o profess_a and_o profligate_v debauchée_o while_o he_o be_v what_o he_o be_v shall_v be_v a_o hypocrite_n as_o it_o be_v that_o he_o shall_v proclaim_v and_o conceal_v his_o wickedness_n at_o one_o and_o the_o selfsame_a time_n and_o yet_o even_o such_o a_o debauchée_o thus_o abandon_v to_o all_o sort_n of_o vice_n as_o far_o as_o possibility_n and_o his_o own_o profligate_v inclination_n will_v permit_v shall_v value_v himself_o for_o his_o forbearance_n of_o that_o vice_n from_o which_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o therefore_o forbear_v because_o it_o be_v a_o vice_n but_o because_o shall_v he_o admit_v it_o to_o his_o practice_n it_o will_v thwart_v and_o control_v his_o other_o many_o and_o belove_a vice_n and_o we_o can_v but_o sometime_o observe_v that_o some_o man_n who_o hearty_o hug_v covetousness_n and_o all_o those_o vice_n which_o drudge_n under_o its_o direction_n such_o as_o be_v extortion_n oppression_n fraud_n lie_v perjury_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o uncharitableness_n shall_v yet_o raise_v a_o comfort_n to_o themselves_o because_o they_o be_v sober_a and_o free_a from_o drunkenness_n these_o thing_n as_o strange_a as_o they_o be_v yet_o be_v too_o often_o find_v to_o be_v true_a and_o the_o present_a use_n that_o we_o make_v of_o they_o be_v this_o that_o very_o wicked_a man_n and_o even_o such_o who_o vice_n be_v very_o numerous_a and_o very_a black_a shall_v yet_o for_o all_o that_o perceive_v such_o a_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n only_o in_o abstain_v from_o other_o vice_n which_o be_v not_o their_o own_o that_o they_o shall_v gather_v comfort_n to_o themselves_o from_o such_o their_o abstinence_n and_o that_o therefore_o even_o such_o man_n be_v not_o utter_o void_a of_o all_o sense_n that_o the_o practice_n of_o virtue_n be_v a_o pleasant_a and_o comfortable_a thing_n and_o that_o by_o consequence_n there_o be_v a_o happiness_n which_o do_v attend_v and_o follow_v it_o and_o then_o if_o it_o be_v so_o true_a that_o holiness_n or_o virtue_n for_o virtue_n and_o practical_a holiness_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n but_o i_o say_v if_o it_o be_v so_o true_a that_o holiness_n have_v happiness_n for_o its_o companion_n and_o follower_n that_o the_o most_o wicked_a man_n be_v sensible_a of_o it_o and_o that_o all_o other_o man_n do_v confess_v it_o than_o it_o be_v hope_v that_o the_o present_a exhortation_n will_v be_v admit_v and_o that_o be_v that_o all_o man_n will_v try_v to_o make_v themselves_o happy_a by_o make_v themselves_o holy_a and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a hard_a case_n if_o man_n will_v not_o put_v themselves_o to_o the_o trouble_n of_o try_v that_o experiment_n which_o their_o own_o sense_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o all_o other_o man_n beside_o will_v tell_v they_o must_v needs_o succeed_v and_o which_o when_o it_o do_v succeed_v must_v needs_o make_v they_o happy_a and_o thus_o far_o the_o present_a exhortation_n be_v more_o profess_o direct_v to_o those_o who_o be_v in_o a_o manner_n utter_a stranger_n to_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o so_o have_v need_n of_o a_o guide_n to_o enter_v they_o into_o the_o right_a way_n to_o all_o other_o i_o have_v but_o one_o or_o two_o thing_n to_o say_v and_o so_o shall_v conclude_v the_o whole_a matter_n 1._o and_o first_o because_o i_o do_v suppose_v they_o not_o to_o be_v whole_o stranger_n to_o holiness_n therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v they_o to_o look_v back_o to_o their_o own_o experience_n in_o the_o case_n and_o though_o perhaps_o that_o experience_n may_v not_o be_v much_o yet_o such_o as_o it_o be_v i_o be_o very_o confident_a that_o their_o own_o reflection_n will_v tell_v they_o that_o whenever_o they_o do_v any_o duty_n hearty_o and_o sincere_o they_o do_v not_o go_v without_o all_o comsort_n that_o they_o have_v so_o do_v that_o when_o they_o have_v do_v as_o they_o ought_v their_o condition_n have_v be_v as_o they_o desire_v that_o when_o their_o action_n have_v be_v guide_v by_o their_o conscience_n and_o their_o conscience_n have_v be_v guide_v by_o god_n law_n they_o have_v thereupon_o be_v bless_v with_o calm_a and_o comfortable_a reflection_n that_o a_o diligent_a and_o constant_a discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n have_v therefore_o keep_v
reason_n of_o man_n tenure_n and_o subjection_n six_o as_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o forbid_v tree_n to_o have_v stand_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o garden_n from_o the_o nine_o verse_n of_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o genesis_n so_o a_o tree_n so_o place_v be_v by_o its_o very_a situation_n a_o very_a fit_a and_o proper_a thing_n to_o be_v make_v use_n of_o for_o such_o a_o purpose_n because_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n at_o least_o equidistant_a from_o the_o boundary_n of_o the_o general_a grant_n it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v most_o likely_a to_o present_v itself_o to_o adam_n view_n to_o whatever_o part_n of_o the_o garden_n he_o move_v and_o by_o so_o do_v must_v constant_o or_o at_o least_o frequent_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o tenure_n viz._n that_o he_o hold_v it_o of_o he_o who_o have_v settle_v he_o in_o the_o possession_n and_o use_v of_o all_o the_o rest_n so_o that_o as_o the_o law_n be_v positive_a if_o we_o only_o look_v upon_o the_o express_a word_n of_o it_o so_o it_o be_v moral_a if_o we_o consider_v what_o be_v imply_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o as_o the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a transgression_n of_o the_o law_n be_v the_o eat_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n so_o the_o couch_a immorality_n of_o such_o transgression_n be_v a_o usurpation_n upon_o god_n prerogative_n in_o this_o low_a world_n and_o a_o encroachment_n upon_o the_o reserve_a right_n and_o demean_n of_o the_o supreme_a lord_n the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n then_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n command_n but_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o imply_v law_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o his_o natural_a and_o supreme_a right_n the_o first_o be_v a_o sin_n because_o it_o do_v what_o god_n have_v express_o forbid_v the_o last_o be_v implicit_o forbid_v because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v a_o sin_n though_o god_n do_v not_o express_o forbid_v it_o the_o first_o be_v therefore_o only_o unlawful_a because_o forbid_a the_o last_o be_v unlawful_a in_o itself_o to_o sum_v up_o all_o in_o a_o few_o word_n though_o the_o designation_n of_o the_o particular_a thing_n viz._n the_o tree_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o garden_n be_v arbitrary_a and_o therefore_o positive_a yet_o the_o designation_n of_o something_o be_v as_o just_a and_o wise_a so_o i_o may_v add_v moral_a and_o necessary_a too_o at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v so_o that_o god_n supreme_a right_a aught_o to_o be_v assert_v and_o own_a for_o so_o far_o forth_o the_o prohibition_n give_v to_o man_n of_o eat_v of_o the_o fruit_n of_o any_o tree_n mark_v out_o or_o of_o meddle_v with_o any_o thing_n else_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o antecedent_n and_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n that_o be_v of_o morality_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o express_a prohibition_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o positive_a yet_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o prohibition_n be_v at_o least_o so_o far_o moral_a as_o it_o be_v so_o that_o man_n by_o some_o mean_n or_o other_o shall_v acknowledge_v god_n to_o be_v his_o supreme_a lord_n and_o that_o he_o receive_v from_o he_o whatsoever_o he_o enjoy_v and_o that_o if_o god_n do_v express_o appoint_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n of_o his_o so_o do_v he_o ought_v to_o do_v it_o by_o the_o way_n and_o means_n so_o appoint_v and_o i_o therefore_o say_v express_o because_o so_o far_o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n under_o our_o present_a consideration_n do_v go_v it_o be_v notorious_a that_o what_o be_v express_o prohibit_v by_o it_o be_v only_o arbitrary_a and_o positive_a but_o that_o the_o morality_n of_o the_o prohibition_n be_v not_o express_v but_o at_o the_o most_o but_o couch_v and_o imply_v by_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v we_o may_v learn_v 1._o that_o the_o sin_n express_o prohibit_v by_o the_o law_n may_v therefore_o true_o be_v esteem_v a_o lesser_a sin_n because_o it_o be_v only_o a_o sin_n against_o a_o positive_a law_n for_o such_o a_o sin_n be_v a_o sin_n only_o against_o god_n authority_n whereas_o a_o sin_n that_o contain_v a_o natural_a immorality_n in_o it_o if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v be_v a_o sin_n both_o against_o god_n authority_n and_o against_o his_o purity_n and_o holiness_n too_o 2._o that_o the_o express_a penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o a_o punishment_n threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a prohibition_n of_o the_o law_n for_o it_o do_v not_o look_v like_o justice_n to_o assign_v a_o express_a punishment_n in_o the_o law_n for_o the_o transgression_n of_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o express_o contain_v in_o the_o law_n 3._o such_o punishment_n so_o threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n be_v express_v absolute_a and_o peremptory_a adam_n then_o do_v therefore_o fatal_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n because_o he_o sin_v against_o a_o express_a prohibition_n which_o be_v ratify_v by_o a_o absolute_a peremptory_a and_o a_o universal_a mortality_n as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o speak_v the_o scripture_n in_o adam_n all_o die_v 4._o as_o the_o moral_a law_n couch_v in_o the_o positive_a law_n be_v not_o express_v so_o neither_o be_v there_o any_o express_a punishment_n threaten_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o such_o couch_v law_n for_o while_o man_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o innocence_n as_o there_o be_v no_o need_n that_o god_n shall_v prescribe_v he_o any_o express_a law_n to_o guide_v he_o in_o such_o thing_n which_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n good_a because_o the_o dictate_v of_o his_o own_o reason_n be_v of_o themselves_o sufficient_a for_o such_o his_o guidance_n for_o moral_a goodness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o dictate_v of_o right_a reason_n employ_v about_o the_o action_n of_o rational_a creature_n so_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n there_o be_v no_o occasion_n to_o threaten_v he_o in_o that_o case_n with_o any_o express_a penalty_n because_o the_o threaten_n of_o a_o express_a penalty_n antecedent_n to_o the_o commission_n of_o the_o crime_n can_v only_o be_v proper_a there_o where_o there_o be_v a_o express_a law_n command_v a_o duty_n whereas_o man_n have_v never_o by_o his_o reason_n know_v that_o it_o have_v be_v a_o sin_n to_o eat_v of_o any_o fruit_n which_o kind_o offer_v itself_o to_o his_o view_n and_o natural_a inclination_n if_o such_o fruit_n have_v not_o be_v forbid_v by_o some_o express_a law_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_a it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o penalty_n of_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_v too_o 5._o as_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o moral_a duty_n which_o be_v only_o imply_v in_o the_o law_n forbid_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o this_o law_n do_v must_v in_o reason_n and_o equity_n assign_v a_o heavy_a punishment_n to_o such_o great_a sin_n 6._o such_o heavy_a punishment_n must_v suppose_v a_o resurrection_n for_o a_o great_a punishment_n than_o death_n can_v therefore_o be_v inflict_v upon_o a_o dead_a man_n without_o a_o resurrection_n because_o no_o punishment_n at_o all_o can_v be_v they_o may_v be_v so_o entitle_v and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o they_o be_v so_o then_o the_o conclusion_n will_v be_v that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n be_v therefore_o true_a because_o the_o salvation_n of_o believer_n be_v certain_a but_o then_o i_o will_v have_v it_o remark_v that_o i_o only_o say_v that_o this_o conclusion_n will_v follow_v if_o our_o reason_n prove_v good_a for_o because_o the_o salvation_n of_o believer_n be_v general_o agree_v to_o be_v express_a revelation_n but_o the_o imputation_n in_o order_n to_o once_o they_o appear_v so_o to_o be_v i_o do_v profess_v in_o this_o case_n as_o in_o all_o other_o that_o i_o shall_v willing_o part_v with_o they_o because_o to_o i_o express_v and_o on_o all_o side_n acknowledge_v revelation_n do_v weigh_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o all_o reason_n and_o elaborate_a deduction_n or_o interpretation_n whatsoever_o now_o to_o make_v it_o out_o that_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o upon_o the_o same_o account_n to_o esteem_v a_o man_n innocent_a and_o yet_o a_o criminal_a must_v needs_o be_v absurd_a because_o it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n and_o then_o because_o in_o contradiction_n only_o one_o part_n can_v be_v true_a therefore_o so_o sure_a as_o we_o be_v that_o he_o who_o be_v true_o forgive_v must_v be_v a_o sinner_n so_o sure_o we_o be_v also_o that_o he_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v true_o suppose_v to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o when_o god_n forgive_v as_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o reason_n and_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v sin_n and_o be_v so_o express_v in_o general_a in_o the_o scripture_n so_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o the_o same_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v those_o sin_n to_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n do_v forgive_v we_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v in_o the_o law_n 2._o nor_o can_v we_o be_v so_o second_o because_o shall_v we_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v yet_o we_o can_v not_o by_o so_o do_v ever_o fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o it_o be_v notorious_a in_o itself_o that_o the_o suffering_n what_o the_o law_n threaten_v be_v not_o the_o do_v what_o the_o law_n command_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o that_o punishment_n which_o we_o have_v deserve_v can_v give_v we_o no_o
better_o a_o title_n to_o obedience_n than_o our_o suffering_n such_o punishment_n can_v have_v do_v have_v that_o punishment_n not_o be_v forgive_v and_o it_o look_v absurd_a at_o first_o view_n that_o gild_n shall_v consist_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o obedience_n and_o that_o punishment_n shall_v be_v the_o desert_n and_o therefore_o in_o justice_n the_o effect_n of_o our_o gild_n and_o yet_o that_o obedience_n shall_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o our_o punishment_n that_o be_v that_o gild_n after_o one_o remove_v shall_v be_v the_o proper_a and_o in_o a_o manner_n natural_a because_o just_a cause_n of_o duty_n but_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o sure_a that_o it_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n because_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o god_n himself_o that_o there_o be_v a_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n which_o shall_v be_v eternal_a which_o yet_o will_v be_v impossible_a if_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n be_v equivalent_a to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n which_o because_o for_o the_o reason_n allege_v and_o for_o more_o that_o may_v be_v allege_v it_o can_v be_v therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o such_o punishment_n be_v so_o for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o punishment_n can_v do_v no_o more_o towards_o the_o make_v we_o obedient_a than_o the_o punishment_n itself_o can_v do_v shall_v we_o undergo_v it_o and_o therefore_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o our_o saviour_n have_v suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n do_v not_o of_o itself_o suppose_v we_o to_o have_v fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v imply_v nothing_o more_o in_o it_o than_o our_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o the_o law_n have_v threaten_v and_o which_o we_o have_v deserve_v by_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o it_o and_o so_o do_v only_o free_v we_o from_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o do_v not_o for_o that_o reason_n entitle_v we_o to_o those_o reward_n which_o the_o law_n promise_v to_o those_o who_o obey_v its_o direction_n now_o it_o be_v a_o very_a different_a thing_n to_o be_v bare_o free_v from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o be_v entitle_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o law_n because_o the_o case_n may_v real_o so_o be_v put_v as_o that_o a_o man_n may_v obtain_v a_o release_n in_o the_o first_o case_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v entitle_v to_o or_o possess_v the_o promise_n in_o the_o last_o and_o in_o all_o case_n let_v they_o be_v what_o they_o will_v yet_o still_o we_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o first_o can_v only_o in_o reason_n nay_o in_o nature_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n and_o that_o the_o last_o can_v only_o in_o strictness_n of_o law_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n and_o therefore_o that_o the_o first_o can_v be_v only_a matter_n of_o favour_n whereas_o the_o last_o may_v be_v matter_n of_o right_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n in_o the_o two_o case_n then_o let_v that_o difference_n be_v lodge_v where_o it_o will_v yet_o we_o be_v from_o thence_o assure_v that_o the_o case_n be_v not_o the_o same_o and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n in_o our_o stead_n be_v any_o argument_n that_o we_o have_v fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v affirm_v by_o several_a learned_a man_n that_o we_o be_v sufficient_o entitle_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n by_o the_o bare_a pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o when_o we_o be_v treat_v by_o god_n with_o impunity_n we_o be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n treat_v as_o innocent_n and_o that_o he_o who_o be_v treat_v as_o a_o innocent_a by_o god_n himself_o who_o can_v be_v mistake_v in_o the_o case_n must_v therefore_o needs_o be_v so_o yet_o these_o man_n as_o they_o do_v not_o sufficient_o distinguish_v between_o a_o innocent_a and_o a_o saint_n so_o neither_o do_v they_o between_o impunity_n and_o a_o reward_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n be_v meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n to_o himself_o and_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o yet_o they_o be_v only_o expiatory_a to_o we_o and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o the_o utmost_a design_n the_o natural_a tendency_n and_o the_o only_a business_n of_o a_o expiation_n be_v to_o obtain_v a_o impunity_n for_o such_o who_o have_v deserve_v and_o therefore_o must_v in_o justice_n without_o such_o a_o expiation_n suffer_v punishment_n but_o neither_o scripture_n reason_n or_o justice_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o purchase_n of_o impunity_n from_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v a_o purchase_n of_o that_o reward_n that_o be_v only_o due_a to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n in_o one_o word_n reward_n and_o punishment_n derive_v not_o only_o from_o different_a but_o from_o contrary_a principle_n and_o impunity_n have_v and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n a_o respect_n or_o relation_n only_o to_o punishment_n but_o none_o at_o all_o to_o reward_v and_o for_o that_o reason_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o impunity_n can_v have_v no_o concern_v with_o reward_n neither_o since_o then_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o pardon_n to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n it_o be_v absurd_a in_o nature_n and_o reason_n to_o make_v it_o also_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o as_o it_o suppose_v no_o need_n of_o pardon_n so_o do_v by_o the_o law_n only_o belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n so_o that_o a_o expiation_n do_v at_o the_o most_o but_o make_v a_o man_n innocent_a but_o do_v nothing_o to_o make_v he_o a_o saint_n for_o it_o only_o cancel_v his_o neglect_n of_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o do_v that_o duty_n for_o he_o which_o he_o have_v neglect_v by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v 1._o that_o reward_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n 2._o that_o punishment_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o that_o expiation_n have_v no_o relation_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n but_o that_o it_o only_o concern_v that_o punishment_n which_o without_o such_o expiation_n be_v in_o justice_n due_a to_o disobedience_n now_o because_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n but_o that_o also_o in_o and_o through_o the_o same_o saviour_n we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o glorious_a reward_n and_o because_o as_o have_v appear_v in_o general_n reward_n do_v in_o reason_n and_o justice_n as_o proper_o belong_v to_o duty_n and_o obedience_n as_o forgiveness_n do_v to_o expiation_n therefore_o our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v upon_o what_o obedience_n such_o reward_n be_v ground_v for_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o because_o the_o distribution_n of_o such_o reward_n be_v lodge_v in_o god_n hand_n therefore_o the_o reward_n will_v be_v bestow_v just_o and_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o therefore_o we_o be_v far_o assure_v that_o it_o will_v be_v confer_v upon_o duty_n and_o obedience_n and_o indeed_o have_v in_o what_o go_v before_o see_v what_o provision_n god_n have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o the_o possibility_n and_o justice_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o be_v satisfy_v that_o that_o provision_n which_o he_o have_v make_v for_o that_o purpose_n will_v not_o also_o fulfil_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n it_o must_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o such_o directive_n part._n for_o 1._o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o may_v therefore_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v one_o way_n or_o other_o because_o the_o law_n be_v god_n be_v in_o itself_o holy_a just_a and_o good_n and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n that_o it_o can_v be_v a_o indifferent_a thing_n to_o the_o ever-wise_a and_o most_o holy_a lawgiver_n whether_o a_o law_n which_o be_v so_o be_v obey_v or_o not_o for_o that_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o cast_v off_o all_o regard_n to_o duty_n holiness_n and_o righteousness_n nay_o which_o be_v yet_o more_o because_o every_o just_a law_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n even_o because_o it_o be_v just_a design_v the_o obedience_n of_o they_o for_o who_o it_o be_v make_v i_o say_v because_o it_o
that_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n release_n from_o death_n that_o be_v imputation_n be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o as_o justifiable_a in_o one_o case_n as_o in_o the_o other_o for_o they_o both_o stand_v upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o foot_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n he_o who_o throw_v down_o one_o throw_v down_o both_o and_o therefore_o whoever_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n to_o man_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o imputation_n of_o man_n sin_n to_o our_o saviour_n and_o all_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o or_o in_o other_o word_n he_o who_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n likewise_o 2._o those_o man_n who_o do_v so_o far_o maintain_v man_n salvation_n to_o depend_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n alone_o as_o to_o deny_v impute_v righteousness_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o salvation_n do_v not_o seem_v to_o i_o sufficient_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n 1._o the_o death_n itself_o and_o 2._o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n in_o submit_v himself_o to_o such_o a_o death_n now_o because_o death_n be_v proper_o speak_v what_o he_o undergo_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o man_n sin_n for_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n do_v express_o assign_v death_n as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n hence_o it_o be_v as_o i_o conceive_v that_o most_o of_o those_o who_o have_v discourse_v of_o man_n redemption_n for_o the_o sake_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n have_v place_v the_o merit_n of_o the_o purchase_n only_o in_o such_o death_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n have_v whole_o lay_v aside_o all_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o that_o obedience_n which_o attend_v it_o but_o because_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o case_n speak_v otherwise_o and_o because_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v best_a instruct_v out_o of_o they_o in_o any_o thing_n which_o concern_v our_o saviour_n therefore_o lay_v aside_o at_o present_a all_o scheme_n of_o humane_a reason_v or_o contrivance_n we_o shall_v entire_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o for_o such_o instruction_n take_v we_o notice_n therefore_o that_o they_o inform_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v deliver_v to_o death_n by_o the_o determinate_a counsel_n and_o foreknowledge_n of_o god_n so_o st._n peter_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o of_o act_n and_o twenty_o three_o verse_n and_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o other_o place_n from_o which_o we_o infer_v that_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v a_o act_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n all_o which_o st._n paul_n give_v we_o in_o a_o few_o word_n but_o those_o very_a full_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n when_o he_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o philippian_n the_o eight_o verse_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v find_v in_o fashion_n as_o a_o man_n humble_v himself_o and_o become_v obedient_a unto_o death_n even_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n since_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v at_o least_o one_o branch_n of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n that_o be_v since_o his_o obedience_n in_o the_o scripture-account_a be_v show_v in_o his_o death_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o life_n and_o therefore_o both_o when_o in_o conjunction_n be_v one_o and_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v upon_o what_o ground_n or_o by_o what_o warrant_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v and_o much_o less_o defend_v that_o man_n be_v save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o death_n but_o that_o he_o be_v not_o save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o obedience_n and_o i_o will_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o insist_v upon_o this_o inquiry_n because_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v meritorious_a of_o man_n everlasting_a happiness_n and_o that_o be_v the_o present_a case_n then_o if_o we_o must_v make_v a_o opposition_n between_o his_o death_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o to_o ascribe_v man_n happiness_n to_o his_o death_n but_o not_o to_o his_o obedience_n do_v make_v such_o a_o opposition_n but_o i_o say_v if_o there_o must_v be_v a_o opposition_n make_v between_o they_o it_o seem_v much_o more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n nay_o indeed_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o ascribe_v such_o merit_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n than_o to_o his_o death_n for_o it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o natural_a justice_n that_o duty_n and_o obedience_n may_v deserve_v a_o reward_n but_o it_o be_v a_o strain_n beyond_o conceit_n that_o punishment_n shall_v do_v so_o too_o for_o if_o that_o be_v allow_v than_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v just_o meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n as_o well_o as_o obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o at_o long_o run_v it_o will_v come_v to_o the_o same_o event_n to_o break_v the_o law_n as_o to_o keep_v it_o but_o because_o that_o can_v be_v allow_v therefore_o if_o people_n will_v have_v a_o opposition_n in_o the_o case_n where_o the_o scripture_n have_v make_v none_o we_o shall_v rather_o ascribe_v man_n eternal_a happiness_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n than_o to_o the_o death_n itself_o and_o then_o if_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n may_v be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n in_o one_o case_n why_o may_v it_o not_o be_v so_o in_o more_o for_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o a_o believer_n may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n he_o may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n too_o since_o then_o in_o the_o present_a case_n it_o be_v allow_v that_o a_o believer_n have_v his_o interest_n by_o imputation_n in_o the_o first_o case_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o he_o may_v and_o consider_v what_o have_v already_o be_v say_v that_o he_o must_v have_v it_o so_o in_o the_o last_o that_o be_v in_o a_o few_o word_n that_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n both_o in_o his_o life_n and_o in_o his_o death_n must_v purchase_v for_o man_n that_o happiness_n which_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o justice_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o appropriate_v reward_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a then_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n for_o which_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n may_v belong_v to_o believer_n the_o merit_n of_o his_o obedience_n may_v do_v so_o too_o and_o that_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o do_v therefore_o belong_v to_o they_o because_o they_o be_v impute_v to_o they_o our_o next_o business_n must_v be_v with_o those_o man_n who_o deny_v all_o imputation_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o neither_o allow_v the_o merit_n of_o his_o life_n or_o death_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o large_o discourse_v of_o the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o death_n our_o only_a business_n at_o present_a will_v be_v to_o inquire_v concern_v the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o obedience_n and_o because_o the_o man_n we_o have_v now_o to_o do_v with_o do_v deny_v all_o imputation_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o therefore_o we_o shall_v lay_v down_o and_o attempt_v the_o proof_n of_o this_o follow_a proposition_n that_o that_o righteousness_n by_o which_o believer_n shall_v be_v judge_v and_o in_o consideration_n of_o which_o they_o shall_v obtain_v salvation_n at_o the_o resurrection_n and_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v be_v the_o obedience_n of_o their_o saviour_n while_o he_o live_v in_o the_o flesh_n impute_v to_o such_o believer_n 1._o in_o order_n to_o this_o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o scripture_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o all_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n that_o be_v according_a to_o their_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n in_o this_o life_n 2._o we_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o all_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v adjudge_v to_o enjoy_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n must_v in_o order_n to_o that_o bless_a sentence_n be_v first_o entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n this_o we_o reckon_v be_v prove_v before_o 3._o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o no_o man_n though_o never_o so_o righteous_a yet_o ever_o do_v do_v or_o shall_v arrive_v at_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n in_o this_o life_n the_o question_n then_o that_o remain_v to_o be_v resolve_v be_v how_o any_o man_n shall_v come_v to_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n
that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v entitle_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o because_o no_o man_n can_v warrantable_o say_v how_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v unless_o he_o do_v assign_v some_o way_n how_o he_o shall_v be_v so_o entitle_v therefore_o they_o who_o in_o this_o case_n deny_v all_o imputation_n whatsoever_o do_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n shall_v be_v bestow_v by_o god_n upon_o believer_n by_o infusion_n that_o be_v for_o so_o they_o must_v mean_v god_n shall_v by_o his_o mercy_n and_o freegrace_n bestow_v such_o a_o stock_n of_o holiness_n upon_o believer_n as_o shall_v cleanse_v and_o fill_v all_o their_o capacity_n and_o so_o make_v they_o perfect_o holy_a and_o by_o consequence_n capable_a of_o eternal_a happiness_n 1._o now_o though_o it_o be_v free_o grant_v and_o second_o that_o as_o it_o be_v better_a accommodate_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n so_o that_o it_o be_v so_o also_o to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o holiness_n which_o do_v even_o by_o those_o who_o plead_v for_o it_o not_o take_v place_n till_o after_o the_o resurrection_n for_o it_o be_v agree_v on_o all_o hand_n that_o no_o man_n holiness_n be_v perfect_a in_o this_o life_n now_o it_o do_v not_o look_v altogether_o so_o rational_a nor_o so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o justice_n or_o the_o revelation_n of_o scripture_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o what_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o body_n before_o his_o death_n and_o yet_o that_o he_o shall_v by_o the_o last_o judicial_a sentence_n be_v such_o his_o obedience_n if_o therefore_o his_o obedience_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n may_v by_o any_o mean_n be_v so_o make_v over_o to_o believer_n as_o to_o be_v just_o account_v they_o then_o there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o their_o right_n to_o the_o reward_n appoint_v to_o such_o obedience_n will_v be_v just_a and_o good_a too_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v just_o account_v they_o we_o have_v as_o we_o believe_v make_v it_o good_a already_o but_o a_o holiness_n infuse_v by_o god_n after_o a_o resurrection_n can_v in_o no_o sense_n nor_o in_o any_o congruity_n be_v account_v and_o much_o less_o can_v it_o be_v a_o obedience_n pay_v by_o man_n while_o in_o the_o body_n to_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v in_o any_o sense_n or_o in_o any_o congruity_n be_v such_o a_o holiness_n to_o which_o the_o reward_n allot_v only_o to_o obedience_n can_v belong_v and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v eternal_a happiness_n be_v bestow_v upon_o believer_n in_o consideration_n of_o such_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n in_o one_o word_n infuse_v holiness_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n do_v in_o no_o wise_n agree_v to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o though_o it_o pretend_v to_o magnify_v god_n mercy_n yet_o it_o take_v no_o care_n in_o the_o mean_a while_n to_o assert_v and_o vindicate_v his_o justice_n but_o make_v the_o whole_a process_n of_o that_o great_a assize_n to_o be_v arbitrary_a and_o illegal_a whilst_o it_o open_v a_o way_n to_o man_n happiness_n by_o a_o holiness_n which_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o the_o cause_n upon_o which_o alone_o his_o trial_n depend_v for_o a_o reward_n confer_v in_o another_o world_n upon_o a_o holiness_n infuse_v in_o another_o world_n do_v in_o no_o wise_a look_n back_o to_o or_o pass_v a_o judgement_n upon_o the_o life_n that_o be_v lead_v in_o this_o world_n but_o because_o we_o know_v assure_o and_o that_o by_o many_o express_a testimony_n of_o scripture_n that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o last_o day_n therefore_o for_o that_o reason_n alone_o if_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o other_o we_o can_v ascribe_v a_o future_a happiness_n the_o happy_a just_a and_o final_a sentence_n of_o that_o day_n to_o such_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n no_o the_o holiness_n for_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v reward_v in_o a_o future_a life_n must_v be_v a_o obedience_n practise_v in_o this_o life_n the_o duty_n be_v lay_v upon_o man_n by_o the_o law_n here_o and_o the_o reward_n stand_v engage_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o duty_n and_o if_o the_o righteousness_n of_o man_n at_o the_o resurrection_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n pay_v to_o the_o law_n then_o when_o the_o law_n require_v such_o obedience_n the_o reward_n promise_v by_o the_o law_n can_v in_o no_o wise_n belong_v to_o such_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o to_o fancy_n a_o reward_n for_o a_o holiness_n in_o which_o the_o law_n be_v not_o at_o all_o concern_v as_o it_o be_v not_o in_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n be_v to_o have_v no_o regard_n to_o the_o law_n at_o all_o for_o happiness_n bestow_v in_o consideration_n of_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n may_v as_o well_o be_v grant_v without_o the_o law_n as_o with_o it_o nay_o indeed_o much_o better_o because_o have_v there_o be_v no_o law_n at_o all_o than_o such_o a_o management_n have_v not_o affront_v the_o law_n whereas_o the_o law_n have_v be_v once_o settle_v to_o bestow_v the_o reward_n promise_v by_o the_o law_n upon_o a_o holiness_n which_o have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n as_o a_o infuse_a holiness_n have_v not_o be_v to_o slight_a and_o overlook_v the_o law_n for_o it_o allow_v the_o law_n to_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o allotment_n of_o such_o a_o reward_n it_o may_v be_v plausible_o object_v in_o this_o place_n that_o while_o i_o vindicate_v the_o cause_n which_o i_o undertake_v against_o one_o adversary_n i_o give_v it_o up_o to_o another_o because_o while_o i_o assert_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v at_o the_o last_o day_n be_v judge_v according_a to_o his_o behaviour_n in_o this_o world_n i_o do_v in_o effect_n refer_v the_o reward_n that_o shall_v then_o be_v adjudge_v to_o believer_n to_o such_o their_o behaviour_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n to_o their_o obedience_n in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o because_o i_o do_v so_o i_o therefore_o pull_v down_o with_o one_o hand_n that_o which_o before_o i_o have_v set_v up_o with_o another_o viz._n the_o imputation_n of_o their_o saviour_n righteousness_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n 1._o but_o this_o objection_n be_v ground_v upon_o a_o mistake_n which_o mistake_n be_v
devil_n and_o therefore_o much_o more_o beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o shortsighted_a man_n and_o yet_o by_o his_o light_n he_o can_v because_o he_o have_v instruct_v we_o that_o such_o thing_n be_v not_o only_o the_o effect_n of_o a_o almighty_a power_n but_o of_o a_o almighty_a wisdom_n of_o a_o almighty_a justice_n and_o of_o a_o almighty_a mercy_n too_o for_o in_o the_o business_n of_o man_n salvation_n as_o in_o all_o thing_n else_o he_o do_v so_o display_v his_o attribute_n as_o that_o they_o never_o clash_v nor_o interfere_v his_o mercy_n do_v not_o fight_v against_o his_o justice_n nor_o his_o justice_n against_o his_o mercy_n and_o neither_o fight_n against_o his_o wisdom_n by_o the_o revelation_n therefore_o of_o the_o christian_a religion_n god_n have_v admit_v we_o to_o a_o near_a view_n of_o his_o deal_n with_o the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o have_v at_o least_o communicate_v so_o much_o of_o his_o counsel_n to_o we_o as_o may_v assist_v we_o if_o we_o be_v not_o want_v to_o ourselves_o to_o provide_v for_o our_o own_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o security_n and_o to_o vindicate_v and_o assert_v his_o justice_n and_o mercy_n let_v we_o therefore_o thankful_o receive_v the_o mercy_n as_o it_o be_v gracious_o offer_v and_o not_o pretend_v to_o regulate_v his_o revelation_n by_o our_o feeble_a reason_n but_o guide_v our_o reason_n by_o his_o revelation_n for_o we_o know_v that_o he_o can_v do_v more_o than_o we_o can_v and_o therefore_o also_o we_o may_v know_v that_o he_o can_v guide_v we_o better_o than_o we_o can_v guide_v ourselves_o and_o because_o he_o have_v vouchsafe_v in_o mercy_n so_o to_o do_v it_o will_v but_o very_o ill_a sort_n with_o that_o deference_n we_o owe_v he_o to_o do_v as_o too_o many_o nowadays_o do_v that_o be_v to_o return_v from_o reveal_v to_o natural_a religion_n and_o so_o to_o walk_v in_o path_n not_o only_o of_o our_o own_o choose_n but_o many_o time_n of_o our_o own_o make_v too_o for_o since_o the_o daystar_n from_o on_o high_a have_v visit_v we_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n as_o to_o guide_v our_o life_n so_o to_o guide_v our_o faith_n by_o that_o light_n which_o it_o afford_v we_o 2._o since_o we_o can_v only_o be_v save_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o since_o none_o of_o we_o have_v pay_v such_o obedience_n and_o so_o if_o we_o stand_v the_o award_n of_o our_o own_o desert_n we_o must_v needs_o fall_v short_a of_o salvation_n i_o say_v since_o thing_n be_v so_o we_o ought_v with_o heart_n and_o voice_n to_o praise_v our_o saviour_n who_o by_o a_o infinite_a condescension_n both_o oblige_v himself_o to_o obey_v the_o law_n and_o so_o intimate_o unite_v we_o to_o himself_o as_o to_o entitle_v we_o to_o his_o obedience_n by_o which_o we_o may_v be_v save_v for_o as_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n of_o obtain_v salvation_n but_o by_o obedience_n so_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n give_v but_o he_o whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o that_o obedience_n by_o which_o we_o must_v be_v save_v be_v he_o his_o love_n to_o righteousness_n than_o make_v his_o obedience_n perfect_a and_o his_o love_n to_o we_o make_v his_o obedience_n we_o and_o both_o if_o we_o be_v not_o want_v to_o ourselves_o will_v make_v our_o condition_n happy_a and_o secure_a and_o then_o sure_o our_o security_n and_o happiness_n as_o they_o do_v very_o well_o deserve_v so_o they_o do_v require_v a_o thanksgiving_n for_o we_o therefore_o stand_v bind_v to_o be_v grateful_a to_o and_o to_o love_v the_o author_n of_o our_o happiness_n because_o we_o find_v that_o we_o can_v but_o love_v ourselves_o 3._o as_o we_o can_v be_v save_v without_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n so_o as_o we_o desire_v our_o own_o safety_n we_o shall_v hearty_o endeavour_v to_o qualify_v ourselves_o to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o his_o righteousness_n and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o our_o desire_n at_o least_o after_o righteousness_n and_o our_o goodwill_n to_o entertain_v it_o be_v necessary_a even_o for_o our_o obtain_v the_o imputation_n of_o it_o because_o it_o can_v in_o any_o sense_n be_v we_o if_o we_o be_v not_o willing_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o we_o must_v be_v therefore_o disable_v to_o receive_v it_o if_o we_o be_v unwilling_a to_o entertain_v it_o so_o much_o righteousness_n god_n require_v of_o we_o in_o order_n to_o our_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n i_o know_v that_o some_o divine_n do_v speak_v of_o irresistible_a grace_n and_o that_o some_o few_o do_v defend_v it_o that_o be_v in_o a_o few_o word_n they_o make_v god_n by_o the_o arbitrary_a determination_n of_o his_o own_o pleasure_n to_o bestow_v grace_n upon_o some_o man_n whether_o they_o will_v or_o no_o and_o even_o against_o their_o inclination_n and_o to_o make_v good_a what_o they_o so_o maintain_v they_o instance_n in_o the_o conversion_n of_o st._n paul_n and_o such_o like_a case_n but_o though_o st._n paul_n and_o some_o other_o have_v be_v convert_v by_o miracle_n yet_o we_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o miracle_n wrought_v for_o the_o selfsame_a purpose_n have_v not_o always_o be_v attend_v with_o success_n and_o that_o the_o miracle_n even_o of_o our_o saviour_n himself_o and_o those_o too_o wrought_v before_o their_o eye_n do_v fail_v of_o their_o design_a effect_n and_o that_o in_o a_o manner_n upon_o the_o whole_a nation_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o we_o know_v not_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n nor_o the_o inward_a but_o real_a preparation_n of_o soul_n that_o may_v due_o qualify_v they_o to_o admit_v god_n grace_n but_o we_o do_v know_v that_o st._n paul_n think_v very_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v as_o he_o do_v and_o then_o though_o he_o be_v defective_a in_o his_o knowledge_n yet_o because_o he_o act_v according_a to_o such_o knowledge_n he_o be_v therefore_o honest_a and_o sincere_a in_o his_o practice_n and_o then_o if_o god_n in_o pity_n to_o his_o ignorance_n and_o in_o approbation_n of_o his_o sincerity_n do_v reward_v that_o sincerity_n with_o a_o extraordinary_a direction_n for_o the_o guidance_n of_o his_o practice_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o be_v teach_v that_o his_o grace_n be_v suit_v to_o st._n paul_n will._n for_o he_o will_v that_o after_o the_o miracle_n which_o he_o will_v before_o it_o that_o be_v he_o be_v ever_o free_v from_o such_o vengeance_n therefore_o we_o do_v from_o hence_o conclude_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o our_o saviour_n alone_o as_o salvation_n be_v take_v for_o our_o redemption_n from_o the_o vengeance_n and_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o because_o no_o man_n be_v qualify_v to_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n
