general_a rule_n that_o be_v rather_o from_o a_o art_n than_o from_o the_o spirit_n prayer_n and_o many_o time_n he_o get_v the_o art_n so_o curious_o that_o he_o refresh_v many_o saint_n and_o poor_a soul_n by_o it_o though_o he_o have_v little_a of_o the_o sense_n of_o it_o on_o his_o own_o heart_n he_o act_v that_o part_n so_o exact_o and_o careful_o to_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n that_o it_o work_v much_o upon_o the_o affection_n of_o all_o that_o hear_v he_o and_o converse_v with_o he_o this_o i_o speak_v now_o as_o to_o those_o that_o be_v most_o careful_a indeed_o there_o be_v some_o be_v with_o god_n the_o more_o he_o get_v up_o his_o soul_n the_o divine_a nature_n get_v more_o breath_n and_o strength_n by_o breathe_v after_o god_n the_o long_a it_o breathe_v the_o strong_a it_o breathe_v a_o hypocrite_n have_v much_o ado_n to_o keep_v up_o his_o affection_n to_o the_o first_o start_n either_o private_o or_o public_o hardly_o able_a to_o keep_v in_o his_o spirit_n but_o he_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n as_o to_o the_o divine_a nature_n of_o those_o thing_n as_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o they_o therefore_o he_o be_v fain_o to_o pump_n and_o strain_n for_o expression_n when_o his_o affection_n be_v lose_v this_o you_o will_v find_v as_o a_o perfect_a secret_a in_o your_o own_o heart_n that_o know_v and_o be_v privy_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n the_o spirit_n may_v indeed_o withdraw_v sometime_o but_o take_v it_o common_o and_o ordinary_o the_o soul_n be_v never_o so_o move_v as_o when_o it_o be_v touch_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o a_o hypocrite_n you_o shall_v have_v his_o duty_n do_v very_o sleightlie_o at_o the_o latter_a end_n when_o there_o shall_v be_v most_o vigour_n but_o you_o shall_v find_v the_o duty_n of_o saint_n when_o once_o the_o soul_n begin_v to_o get_v heat_n and_o warmth_n with_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o sense_n
say_v he_o take_v care_n only_o for_o a_o little_a outward_a concernment_n and_o garb_n of_o religion_n that_o be_v all_o five_o this_o be_v a_o discovery_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n as_o to_o duty_n in_o general_a wherein_o his_o hypocrisy_n be_v see_v that_o he_o never_o mind_v to_o get_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o duty_n or_o to_o a_o duty_n that_o be_v the_o holy_a bless_a frame_n of_o it_o but_o shall_v i_o be_v in_o when_o i_o come_v to_o meet_v with_o god_n what_o shall_v i_o meet_v with_o god_n about_o second_o the_o frame_n of_o a_o duty_n be_v to_o get_v the_o heart_n spiritual_o behave_v before_o god_n in_o a_o duty_n true_o few_o look_n after_o it_o i_o wish_v that_o the_o best_a saint_n do_v look_v after_o it_o more_o but_o a_o hypocrite_n never_o look_v after_o it_o at_o all_o almost_o a_o spiritual_a behaviour_n that_o lie_v in_o that_o inward_a proportion_n of_o a_o man_n soul_n before_o god_n according_a as_o he_o be_v to_o act_v to_o god_n or_o expect_v from_o god_n if_o i_o go_v to_o god_n in_o a_o mourn_a frame_n to_o beg_v something_o from_o he_o then_o can_v my_o soul_n behave_v itself_o in_o that_o poor_a and_o low_a condition_n as_o one_o that_o expect_v pure_o that_o which_o i_o want_v from_o heaven_n i_o ought_v then_o to_o be_v mighty_a humble_a and_o in_o a_o frame_n to_o get_v that_o of_o god_n if_o i_o come_v to_o rejoice_v and_o joy_n to_o expectation_n and_o to_o what_o i_o will_v express_v to_o god_n and_o expect_v from_o god_n which_o a_o hypocrite_n never_o have_v those_o glorious_a desire_n and_o breathe_n in_o the_o vigour_n of_o my_o soul_n carry_v out_o according_a to_o the_o weight_n and_o nature_n of_o thing_n so_o that_o i_o say_v all_o those_o thing_n show_v you_o what_o be_v the_o frame_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n in_o a_o duty_n if_o he_o can_v but_o carry_v it_o on_o handsome_o with_o quietness_n and_o conveniency_n and_o come_v off_o fair_o to_o his_o own_o conscience_n and_o to_o saint_n he_o little_a mind_n what_o his_o soul_n have_v be_v do_v what_o his_o heart_n have_v be_v act_v all_o the_o while_n and_o then_o sixthly_a pray_v you_o observe_v this_o that_o a_o hypocrite_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o zeal_n and_o glory_n of_o his_o duty_n he_o be_v secret_o weary_a of_o they_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o clear_a in_o your_o own_o spirit_n if_o ever_o you_o have_v be_v convince_v of_o the_o working_n of_o this_o sin_n in_o your_o soul_n especial_o if_o they_o be_v duty_n that_o do_v not_o bring_v he_o in_o present_a profit_n some_o internal_a or_o external_a thing_n he_o want_v they_o now_o with_o a_o saint_n it_o be_v not_o so_o his_o knee_n may_v fail_v and_o his_o hand_n hang_v down_o but_o his_o heart_n never_o he_o will_v do_v all_o god_n will_v and_o he_o be_v sorry_a he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o than_o he_o do_v he_o be_v sorry_a the_o body_n shall_v fail_v when_o the_o spirit_n live_v a_o saint_n seldom_o fail_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o will_n for_o the_o most_o part_n the_o will_n be_v present_a i_o will_v do_v more_o but_o i_o have_v a_o cloggy_a body_n and_o i_o have_v a_o nature_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o but_o i_o have_v a_o real_a will_n now_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o be_v secret_o weary_a of_o his_o duty_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o enjoyment_n seven_o pray_v take_v this_o along_o with_o you_o that_o you_o have_v all_o his_o religion_n in_o a_o few_o duty_n take_v he_o out_o of_o duty_n and_o he_o be_v a_o common_a man_n this_o will_v be_v a_o trial_n to_o your_o heart_n if_o you_o put_v they_o to_o it_o serious_o take_v he_o out_o of_o prayer_n and_o preach_v if_o he_o be_v one_o call_v to_o that_o work_n there_o be_v all_o his_o religion_n come_v to_o any_o deal_n of_o corruption_n there_o be_v his_o best_a part_n past_a he_o be_v no_o more_o religious_a than_o he_o be_v in_o these_o duty_n whereas_o religion_n be_v a_o life_n out_o of_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o in_o duty_n a_o man_n be_v every_o where_o go_v out_o after_o god_n religion_n will_v move_v he_o and_o breath_n in_o he_o but_o a_o hypocrite_n take_v he_o out_o of_o any_o duty_n he_o be_v about_o and_o you_o have_v no_o more_o religion_n he_o will_v be_v as_o vain_a and_o foolish_a afterward_o as_o you_o can_v imagine_v but_o if_o ever_o you_o will_v know_v a_o saint_n take_v he_o out_o of_o his_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o duty_n see_v how_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v upon_o he_o in_o every_o way_n in_o every_o walk_n how_o the_o dread_a of_o the_o almighty_a awe_v he_o but_o a_o hypocrite_n it_o be_v a_o wonder_n to_o see_v how_o flourish_v he_o will_v be_v in_o duty_n but_o come_v and_o take_v he_o out_o of_o these_o he_o know_v in_o his_o conscience_n there_o be_v nothing_o leave_v no_o power_n only_o he_o be_v carry_v out_o to_o the_o duty_n by_o something_o that_o lie_v upon_o he_o externallie_o therefore_o lay_v this_o to_o heart_n eight_o all_o duty_n that_o hypocrite_n do_v that_o they_o can_v be_v content_a with_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n though_o they_o have_v not_o deal_v with_o christ_n in_o it_o and_o get_v something_o pure_o from_o he_o in_o it_o and_o his_o duty_n at_o all_o he_o be_v the_o same_o man_n he_o be_v to_o his_o corruption_n and_o enjoyment_n he_o may_v grow_v more_o fluent_a in_o his_o expression_n manage_v they_o external_o more_o neat_o have_v a_o easiness_n of_o utterance_n and_o a_o frequency_n but_o he_o grow_v not_o at_o all_o as_o to_o inward_a spiritual_a enjoyment_n his_o corruption_n never_o die_v and_o this_o be_v a_o that_o request_n among_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a that_o if_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v not_o good_a at_o that_o he_o be_v good_a at_o nothing_o if_o he_o be_v not_o very_o curious_a there_o he_o will_v be_v of_o little_a account_n for_o it_o be_v common_a for_o one_o to_o desire_v to_o pray_v one_o for_o another_o and_o with_o one_o another_o abundance_n of_o income_n come_v by_o it_o in_o a_o spiritual_a way_n and_o therefore_o that_o be_v the_o care_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n to_o do_v that_o well_o whatever_o he_o neglect_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o as_o to_o their_o part_n they_o never_o excel_v so_o
way_n and_o every_o where_n with_o the_o time_n second_o these_o man_n show_v their_o hypocrisy_n in_o this_o they_o make_v religion_n subservient_fw-fr to_o every_o principle_n of_o man_n and_o conscience_n no_o matter_n if_o he_o can_v keep_v off_o scandal_n though_o guilt_n lie_v fast_o then_o sixthly_a and_o last_o to_o say_v no_o more_o such_o a_o hypocrite_n as_o this_o in_o all_o his_o converse_v will_n meddle_v no_o more_o with_o religion_n than_o may_v fit_v his_o call_v and_o his_o relation_n as_o the_o king_n of_o navarre_n say_v he_o will_v launch_v no_o further_o into_o the_o deep_n than_o he_o may_v come_v in_o again_o with_o the_o same_o wind_n no_o far_o than_o sight_n of_o the_o shore_n so_o it_o be_v with_o hypocrite_n if_o such_o a_o way_n of_o god_n be_v never_o so_o precious_a and_o pure_a i_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o it_o i_o must_v take_v care_n to_o my_o family_n not_o to_o my_o soul_n therefore_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n never_o come_v into_o world_n and_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o that_o you_o imagine_v you_o be_v up_o in_o glory_n yet_o you_o will_v see_v that_o hypocrisy_n be_v a_o secret_a spirit_n that_o run_v through_o all_o your_o act_n it_o be_v such_o a_o secret_a thing_n that_o it_o will_v mingle_v with_o your_o best_a duty_n and_o make_v you_o hypocrite_n in_o the_o very_a act_n of_o they_o oh_o that_o man_n will_v but_o look_v to_o it_o nothing_o like_o pureness_n sincerity_n reality_n inward_a integrity_n to_o be_v true_a to_o god_n and_o my_o own_o conscience_n to_o take_v my_o heart_n every_o day_n and_o cut_v it_o in_o piece_n by_o a_o spiritual_a inquisition_n and_o daily_a trial_n nothing_o like_o it_o after_o every_o duty_n to_o ask_v my_o soul_n what_o be_v do_v after_o every_o prayer_n to_o anatomize_v every_o petition_n again_o and_o know_v how_o it_o be_v in_o the_o frame_n and_o working_n and_o the_o answer_n and_o return_n and_o the_o bless_a consequence_n of_o it_o upon_o my_o heart_n nothing_o will_v do_v well_o else_o what_o a_o dissection_n will_v it_o be_v when_o a_o old_a hypocrite_n will_v be_v open_v what_o that_o will_v be_v none_o know_v yet_o what_o a_o consume_a lung_n and_o liver_n and_o heart_n will_v there_o be_v strange_o eat_v out_o and_o none_o know_v how_o it_o come_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o body_n will_v be_v well_o like_v all_o the_o flesh_n fast_o and_o sound_a nothing_o but_o the_o vital_n eat_v strange_o eat_v as_o with_o a_o moth_n and_o canker_n it_o will_v be_v so_o with_o you_o i_o beseech_v you_o fear_v lest_o it_o grow_v upon_o some_o there_o be_v that_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v so_o at_o least_o they_o have_v secret_a conscientious_a check_n of_o conscience_n yet_o go_v on_o in_o profession_n i_o will_v a_o little_a speak_v to_o they_o at_o present_a and_o then_o make_v application_n of_o the_o whole_a there_o be_v many_o i_o say_v that_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v unsound_a in_o their_o own_o spirit_n and_o yet_o go_v on_o in_o profession_n and_o that_o you_o will_v think_v strange_a and_o it_o be_v more_o strange_a to_o think_v a_o man_n shall_v be_v a_o hypocrite_n and_o not_o know_v it_o than_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v know_v his_o hypocrisy_n and_o yet_o go_v on_o in_o it_o i_o shall_v in_o the_o open_n of_o this_o show_v you_o first_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o and_o that_o it_o be_v often_o so_o and_o most_o hypocrite_n show_v themselves_o to_o be_v so_o second_o i_o shall_v discover_v how_o it_o can_v be_v that_o they_o can_v go_v on_o in_o profession_n so_o easy_o and_o free_o as_o abundance_n of_o light_n otherwise_o they_o can_v never_o play_v their_o trick_n so_o as_o they_o do_v it_o be_v impossible_a but_o the_o heart_n shall_v say_v this_o be_v not_o right_a i_o find_v not_o this_o right_n in_o my_o own_o spirit_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v lie_v under_o these_o thing_n and_o have_v no_o conviction_n no_o check_n secret_o that_o he_o be_v true_o such_o a_o one_o three_o he_o may_v by_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o know_v it_o by_o his_o get_n in_o his_o duty_n if_o he_o have_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o he_o get_v in_o duty_n when_o he_o hear_v how_o saint_n get_v communion_n with_o god_n in_o duty_n how_o their_o soul_n be_v take_v up_o with_o christ_n what_o glorious_a enjoyment_n they_o have_v of_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o sacrament_n what_o glorious_a frame_n they_o find_v upon_o their_o spirit_n when_o they_o have_v communion_n he_o know_v he_o can_v hardly_o get_v from_o one_o duty_n to_o another_o the_o truth_n be_v a_o hypocrite_n be_v the_o poor_a miserable_a soul_n in_o the_o world_n he_o never_o have_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o he_o get_v from_o hand_n to_o mouth_n when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v he_o be_v a_o beggar_n nothing_o at_o all_o to_o live_v on_o and_o he_o know_v he_o never_o meet_v with_o christ_n so_o as_o to_o humble_v he_o and_o to_o lay_v he_o low_o he_o know_v when_o he_o hear_v other_o saint_n speak_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o sweetness_n they_o have_v have_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o christ_n pardon_v and_o apply_v his_o love_n to_o they_o he_o know_v he_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n when_o he_o come_v to_o action_n he_o be_v as_o dead_a and_o as_o low_o as_o may_v be_v and_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o he_o be_v poor_a and_o worst_a at_o last_o fourthlie_o god_n delight_v to_o discover_v a_o hypocrite_n he_o delight_v in_o that_o exceed_o and_o common_o do_v it_o and_o lay_v it_o upon_o a_o man_n close_o and_o wonderful_o by_o wonderful_a flash_n of_o spirit_n and_o god_n delight_v to_o do_v it_o first_o because_o it_o be_v a_o secret_a that_o none_o can_v find_v out_o but_o himself_o therefore_o he_o delight_v to_o anatomize_v a_o wicked_a cunning_a deceitful_a it_o be_v very_o hard_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v long_o a_o hypocrite_n under_o the_o gospel_n but_o he_o must_v lie_v under_o the_o check_n of_o it_o but_o second_o you_o will_v say_v how_o can_v this_o be_v how_o can_v he_o continue_v in_o congregation_n in_o church_n how_o can_v he_o continue_v all_o this_o while_n and_o not_o be_v terrify_v and_o not_o leave_v off_o all_o profession_n my_o together_o at_o night_n they_o rejoice_v and_o brag_v who_o have_v do_v the_o best_a feat_n so_o hypocrite_n can_v but_o know_v in_o their_o natural_a conscience_n it_o be_v against_o the_o rule_n but_o there_o be_v abundance_n of_o pleasure_n in_o it_o to_o cheat_v themselves_o and_o cheat_v other_o till_o god_n work_v mighty_o upon_o they_o for_o to_o imitate_v a_o saint_n in_o every_o thing_n and_o do_v it_o exact_o please_v a_o hypocrite_n that_o he_o can_v delude_v other_o when_o he_o have_v be_v in_o prayer_n cozen_v and_o delude_v the_o best_a sort_n of_o man_n in_o the_o world_n as_o i_o have_v hear_v some_o say_v they_o can_v delude_v all_o the_o saint_n in_o the_o world_n for_o that_o be_v please_v to_o a_o man_n that_o nourish_v his_o self-love_n and_o that_o do_v carry_v he_o on_o to_o act_n so_o as_o to_o be_v well_o think_v of_o by_o other_o it_o show_v a_o man_n a_o artificial_a man_n that_o can_v thus_o and_o thus_o move_v up_o and_o down_o the_o world_n and_o none_o see_v he_o or_o take_v notice_n of_o he_o all_o think_v he_o a_o bless_a saint_n i_o be_o confident_a there_o be_v no_o sin_n so_o please_v to_o a_o soul_n as_o hypocrisy_n be_v for_o it_o will_v have_v so_o many_o variety_n of_o artificial_a motion_n lay_v before_o it_o to_o act_v by_o that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o tie_v to_o one_o or_o tother_o but_o still_o act_v in_o variety_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o divine_a thing_n be_v not_o on_o his_o heart_n at_o all_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o in_o the_o second_o place_n second_o he_o may_v go_v on_o in_o profession_n though_o he_o know_v himself_o to_o be_v so_o he_o may_v go_v on_o because_o he_o know_v not_o the_o nature_n and_o vileness_n of_o his_o sin_n at_o all_o only_o see_v he_o be_v not_o as_o he_o shall_v be_v and_o it_o be_v the_o same_o with_o other_o sin_n he_o may_v lie_v long_o under_o a_o sin_n so_o long_o as_o conscience_n be_v not_o press_v on_o with_o a_o unresistible_a conviction_n only_o a_o general_a cold_a conviction_n be_v upon_o he_o he_o see_v that_o he_o have_v do_v so_o and_o so_o and_o he_o be_v so_o and_o so_o but_o there_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n of_o the_o power_n of_o be_v full_o possess_v with_o that_o fourthlie_o know_v this_o too_o never_o say_v thou_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n when_o no_o outward_a act_n can_v content_v thou_o though_o never_o so_o glorious_a without_o thou_o have_v a_o inward_a frame_n according_a to_o that_o act_n according_a to_o the_o inward_a spirituality_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o thou_o look_v to_o have_v thy_o soul_n in_o a_o or_o of_o any_o outward_a duty_n wherein_o thou_o have_v enjoy_v christ_n as_o for_o commission_n of_o sin_n thou_o need_v not_o fear_v thou_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n six_o and_o last_o thou_o need_v under_o this_o frame_n of_o spirit_n but_o look_v to_o your_o own_o heart_n every_o one_o if_o you_o find_v all_o these_o or_o any_o of_o they_o in_o any_o life_n upon_o your_o soul_n you_o be_v free_a from_o that_o state_n but_o if_o you_o find_v not_o such_o a_o universal_a opposite_a nature_n to_o sin_n but_o a_o frame_n to_o sin_n against_o god_n if_o you_o find_v not_o such_o constant_a pure_a frame_n in_o your_o own_o spirit_n as_o to_o principle_n intention_n and_o end_n you_o will_v never_o be_v able_a to_o free_v yourselves_o from_o such_o a_o state_n and_o condition_n sermon_n it_o be_v that_o spoil_v all_o it_o be_v of_o a_o poisonous_a nature_n i_o shall_v go_v on_o to_o show_v you_o what_o be_v that_o you_o must_v continual_o look_v after_o if_o you_o mean_v to_o it_o out_o of_o a_o good_a intention_n but_o he_o be_v rebuke_v for_o it_o he_o have_v a_o clear_a intention_n will_v not_o have_v the_o least_o hurt_n come_v to_o christ_n but_o it_o be_v against_o
