doubt_v nor_o question_n that_o for_o if_o you_o do_v you_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n and_o though_o the_o thing_n you_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n yet_o if_o you_o do_v not_o know_v and_o be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n you_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n therefore_o we_o must_v be_v sure_a of_o that_o that_o the_o thing_n we_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v concern_v eat_v in_o rom._n 14._o v._n last_o he_o that_o doubt_v be_v damn_v if_o he_o eat_v that_o be_v he_o commit_v a_o damnable_a sin_n because_o he_o believe_v not_o for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n be_v sin_n so_o he_o that_o pray_v doubt_o whether_o the_o thing_n he_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n or_o no_o he_o sin_n in_o prayer_n whatever_o he_o pray_v for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o faith_n with_o a_o persuasion_n that_o what_o he_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o man_n can_v pray_v in_o faith_n suppose_v now_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n pray_v for_o this_o or_o that_o that_o he_o can_v certain_o conclude_v be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n have_v a_o earnest_a desire_n to_o increase_v his_o estate_n in_o the_o world_n that_o he_o may_v live_v brave_o at_o his_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n and_o to_o that_o end_n he_o desire_v to_o be_v diligent_a in_o his_o business_n and_o to_o that_o end_n also_o he_o beg_v of_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v bless_v his_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n that_o he_o may_v gain_v a_o great_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n and_o do_v what_o he_o listen_v and_o live_v at_o his_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n now_o this_o man_n can_v pray_v with_o a_o certain_a assurance_n and_o perswasioâ—_n that_o this_o thing_n be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o 〈◊〉_d you_o ask_v and_o have_v not_o say_v the_o apostle_n james_n because_o you_o ask_v amiss_o to_o spend_v upon_o your_o lust_n james_n 4.3_o it_o be_v not_o according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o you_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n or_o suppose_v now_o that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n intend_v to_o take_v a_o journey_n upon_o pleasure_n to_o have_v a_o ramble_n abroad_o he_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o be_v preserve_v and_o possible_o he_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v keep_v he_o in_o his_o way_n now_o if_o a_o person_n in_o this_o case_n do_v question_n whether_o his_o journey_n be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n he_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n and_o so_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o please_v to_o the_o lord_n or_o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v game_n for_o money_n and_o he_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o win_v possible_o he_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v bless_v he_o in_o his_o undertake_n that_o he_o may_v win_v he_o can_v be_v persuade_v this_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o if_o so_o he_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n and_o so_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o please_v unto_o god_n so_o that_o i_o say_v this_o be_v the_o particular_a direction_n in_o this_o case_n that_o whatsoever_o we_o pray_v for_o we_o must_v be_v sure_a of_o that_o that_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a help_n to_o pray_v in_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n john_n in_o 1_o john_n 5.14_o this_o be_v the_o confidence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o he_o that_o if_o we_o ask_v any_o thing_n according_a to_o his_o will_n he_o hear_v we_o you_o must_v be_v sure_a of_o that_o that_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o then_o we_o may_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v hear_v we_o now_o i_o pray_v consider_v this_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o not_o according_a to_o his_o secret_a will_n and_o purpose_n and_o though_o the_o purpose_n of_o god_n be_v against_o what_o we_o pray_v for_o yet_o if_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n we_o may_v lawful_o pray_v in_o faith_n for_o it_o as_o now_o suppose_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n pray_v for_o the_o life_n of_o such_o a_o relation_n a_o husband_n or_o a_o wife_n or_o a_o child_n or_o a_o friend_n he_o pray_v earnest_o for_o their_o life_n well_o god_n in_o his_o secret_a purpose_n have_v determine_v otherwise_o the_o secret_a will_n of_o god_n be_v contrary_a yet_o this_o be_v lawful_a according_a to_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o welfare_n of_o the_o sick_a he_o may_v pray_v in_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o secret_a purpose_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n you_o know_v this_o be_v david_n case_n he_o pray_v earnest_o for_o his_o sick_a child_n the_o lord_n have_v a_o secret_a purpose_n that_o the_o child_n shall_v die_v yet_o he_o pray_v earnest_o for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o child_n and_o he_o do_v not_o sin_n in_o pray_v because_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n and_o though_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o secret_a will_n of_o god_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o may_v pray_v in_o faith_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o child_n though_o god_n have_v intend_v otherwise_o you_o know_v it_o be_v the_o case_n of_o christ_n himself_o he_o pray_v that_o the_o cup_n may_v pass_v from_o he_o it_o be_v the_o determinate_a purpose_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n that_o the_o cup_n shall_v not_o pass_v from_o he_o but_o he_o shall_v drink_v it_o now_o do_v christ_n sin_n in_o pray_v for_o that_o which_o be_v pray_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o evil_a from_o drink_v the_o cup_n of_o god_n wrath_n though_o it_o be_v the_o secret_a counsel_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v drink_v it_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o do_v not_o sin_n because_o he_o pray_v for_o that_o which_o he_o know_v be_v according_a to_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n well_o this_o be_v the_o first_o direction_n and_o i_o pray_v mind_n it_o that_o if_o you_o will_v pray_v in_o faith_n for_o any_o mercy_n let_v we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o that_o what_o we_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n second_o the_o second_o direction_n to_o pray_v in_o faith_n so_o as_o that_o we_o may_v please_v god_n be_v to_o pray_v in_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n do_v it_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n and_o command_n of_o god_n as_o our_o duty_n brethren_n it_o be_v the_o will_n and_o command_v of_o god_n and_o our_o duty_n that_o we_o shall_v pray_v always_o in_o psalm_n 105.4_o seek_v the_o lord_n and_o his_o strength_n seek_v his_o face_n evermore_o so_o you_o know_v in_o luke_n 18.1_o he_o propound_v a_o parable_n to_o his_o disciple_n to_o the_o end_n that_o man_n shall_v always_o pray_v and_o not_o faint_a it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v pray_v always_o now_o to_o help_v we_o to_o pray_v in_o faith_n it_o be_v good_a to_o be_v eye_v our_o duty_n and_o all_o the_o prayer_n that_o ever_o you_o have_v make_v what_o have_v you_o find_v in_o a_o way_n of_o answer_n to_o your_o prayer_n and_o again_o do_v you_o not_o see_v that_o other_o that_o do_v not_o pray_v at_o all_o fare_v even_o as_o well_o as_o you_o for_o all_o your_o pray_n and_o again_o can_v we_o change_v the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n by_o all_o our_o prayer_n it_o be_v say_v in_o job_n that_o god_n be_v of_o one_o mind_n and_o who_o can_v turn_v he_o can_v all_o the_o prayer_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n and_o angel_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n change_v the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n
go_v and_o eat_v and_o drink_v with_o gladness_n with_o a_o merry_a heart_n it_o be_v true_a the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n can_v be_v jovial_a in_o their_o cup_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o carouse_v and_o none_o seem_v to_o be_v so_o merry_a and_o jovial_a as_o they_o be_v but_o they_o have_v no_o cause_n for_o it_o it_o be_v just_a like_o a_o condemn_a person_n that_o may_v be_v jovial_a and_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o he_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o he_o may_v be_v call_v to_o execution_n this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n if_o god_n do_v not_o accept_v of_o their_o work_n but_o now_o say_v solomon_n go_v thy_o way_n eat_v thy_o bread_n with_o joy_n and_o drink_v thy_o wine_n with_o a_o merry_a heart_n for_o god_n now_o accept_v thy_o work_n 3._o be_v it_o not_o a_o desirable_a thing_n to_o have_v the_o creature_n ready_a to_o be_v serviceable_a and_o officious_a to_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n but_o be_v ready_a to_o be_v officious_a and_o serviceable_a to_o he_o though_o possiby_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v averse_a and_o contrary_a and_o cross_v to_o he_o yet_o they_o be_v all_o serviceable_a and_o officious_a to_o he_o to_o have_v every_o thing_n turn_v to_o good_a to_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n whatever_o any_o creature_n do_v to_o he_o it_o turn_v all_o to_o his_o good_a though_o the_o creature_n may_v intend_v otherwise_o the_o wicked_a man_n may_v intend_v to_o persecute_v and_o persecute_v they_o as_o enemy_n but_o when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n please_v god_n and_o his_o way_n please_v god_n all_o his_o enemy_n shall_v be_v make_v his_o friend_n proverb_n 16.7_o when_o a_o man_n way_n please_v the_o lord_n he_o make_v his_o enemy_n to_o be_v at_o with_o the_o king_n you_o count_v it_o a_o very_a desirable_a thing_n true_o to_o be_v a_o favourite_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n be_v much_o more_o desirable_a to_o be_v in_o favour_n with_o the_o great_a king_n of_o king_n i_o tell_v you_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n be_v as_o life_n to_o a_o man_n soul_n david_n can_v say_v it_o that_o know_v it_o by_o experience_n in_o psalm_n 30.5_o in_o thy_o favour_n be_v life_n nay_o he_o add_v a_o great_a word_n than_o that_o in_o psalm_n 63.3_o thy_o love_a kindness_n be_v better_a than_o life_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n to_o a_o man_n better_o than_o life_n but_o to_o know_v that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v in_o favour_n with_o god_n he_o have_v that_o which_o be_v better_o than_o life_n brethren_n great_a estate_n not_o this_o and_o that_o that_o you_o can_v think_v of_o in_o the_o world_n but_o oh_o that_o i_o may_v have_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o that_o i_o may_v know_v that_o god_n be_v well_o please_v with_o i_o etc._n etc._n then_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v look_v death_n in_o the_o face_n and_o may_v draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n as_o i_o remember_v hezekiah_n when_o he_o have_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n upon_o he_o in_o isa_n 38.3_o lord_n say_v he_o remember_v how_o i_o have_v walk_v before_o thou_o in_o truth_n and_o with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n he_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o his_o way_n be_v please_v to_o he_o and_o now_o he_o can_v resign_v up_o his_o soul_n to_o he_o though_o he_o be_v trouble_v that_o he_o have_v not_o finish_v the_o work_n that_o he_o have_v to_o do_v in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o he_o can_v have_v desire_v to_o live_v long_o and_o upon_o his_o prayer_n the_o lord_n do_v reverse_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n that_o be_v upon_o he_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v the_o sentence_n see_v how_o he_o take_v it_o lord_n say_v he_o remember_v how_o i_o have_v walk_v before_o thou_o in_o truth_n and_o with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n that_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o he_o have_v be_v do_v have_v be_v please_v to_o the_o lord_n so_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n who_o way_n please_v god_n whilst_o he_o live_v in_o the_o world_n when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v he_o may_v look_v death_n in_o the_o face_n with_o comfort_n what_o a_o desirable_a thing_n than_o be_v it_o for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o please_v work_n and_o service_n and_o performance_n come_v to_o be_v please_v to_o god_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v be_v diligent_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o service_n and_o yet_o god_n may_v not_o be_v please_v with_o they_o as_o for_o example_n take_v two_o person_n that_o come_v and_o join_v together_o in_o prayer_n they_o pray_v the_o same_o prayer_n or_o two_o person_n
by_o a_o false_a compass_n and_o so_o steer_v his_o course_n wrong_v true_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o many_o professor_n they_o perform_v duty_n they_o go_v on_o with_o full_a sail_n in_o duty_n they_o perform_v duty_n every_o day_n and_o they_o attend_v upon_o the_o lord_n as_o they_o have_v opportunity_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o read_v the_o word_n daily_o they_o go_v on_o amain_o ay_o but_o still_o they_o steer_v a_o wrong_a course_n they_o sail_v by_o a_o false_a compass_n and_o certain_o they_o will_v never_o come_v to_o the_o haven_n of_o rest_n but_o will_v run_v upon_o their_o own_o ruin_n at_o last_o therefore_o observe_v it_o the_o devil_n will_v allow_v a_o professor_n to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o duty_n to_o pray_v every_o day_n in_o his_o family_n and_o closet_n he_o will_v allow_v he_o to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o ordinance_n attend_v upon_o god_n daily_o so_o long_o as_o his_o duty_n and_o service_n be_v not_o touch_v with_o the_o loadstone_n if_o they_o be_v not_o do_v in_o faith_n he_o know_v what_o will_v be_v the_o issue_n of_o they_o he_o let_v he_o alone_o because_o he_o know_v he_o do_v but_o deceive_v himself_o and_o delude_v his_o own_o soul_n he_o look_v to_o come_v to_o such_o a_o haven_n but_o he_o will_v perish_v and_o miscarry_v for_o ever_o therefore_o brethren_n i_o pray_v consider_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o a_o matter_n of_o very_o great_a concernment_n for_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o look_v to_o it_o and_o be_v careful_a that_o all_o our_o duty_n and_o service_n be_v do_v in_o faith_n or_o else_o we_o that_o we_o must_v be_v accept_v in_o our_o person_n ephes_n 1.6_o and_o if_o our_o person_n be_v not_o accept_v nothing_o that_o we_o do_v can_v be_v accept_v no_o we_o may_v pray_v day_n by_o day_n conscience_n live_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o any_o know_a duty_n or_o live_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n if_o he_o live_v in_o it_o he_o can_v act_v in_o faith_n faith_n will_v purge_v and_o cleanse_v the_o soul_n from_o sin_n that_o he_o will_v put_v away_o all_o guilt_n when_o he_o come_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n see_v what_o be_v say_v in_o job_n 11.13_o 14_o 15._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n and_o stretch_v out_o thy_o hand_n towards_o he_o if_o iniquity_n be_v in_o thy_o hand_n put_v it_o far_o away_o and_o let_v not_o wickedness_n dwell_v in_o thy_o tabernacle_n for_o then_o shall_v thou_o lift_v up_o thy_o face_n without_o spot_n etc._n etc._n when_o you_o come_v to_o stretch_v out_o your_o hand_n towards_o god_n in_o prayer_n or_o when_o you_o the_o sense_n of_o its_o own_o worthiness_n to_o receive_v any_o mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o any_o duty_n or_o ordinance_n these_o two_o thing_n faith_n do_v empty_a the_o soul_n of_o and_o so_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o that_o where_o faith_n have_v be_v act_v and_o
exercise_v there_o have_v be_v self-emptyings_a the_o apostle_n paul_n be_v a_o man_n that_o do_v live_v much_o in_o the_o excercise_n of_o faith_n and_o he_o profess_v it_o gal._n 2.20_o that_o he_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o you_o may_v observe_v how_o the_o apostle_n empty_v himself_o of_o selfsufficiency_n and_o self-worthiness_n for_o selfsufficiency_n say_v he_o in_o rom._n 8.26_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o pray_v nor_o what_o to_o pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v the_o apostle_n paul_n that_o be_v such_o a_o great_a proficient_a in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n such_o a_o eminent_a person_n yet_o say_v he_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o pray_v he_o be_v empty_a of_o selfsufficiency_n and_o say_v he_o in_o 2_o cor._n 3.5_o not_o that_o we_o be_v sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n as_o of_o ourselves_o but_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n say_v he_o i_o be_o so_o insufficient_a that_o i_o can_v so_o much_o as_o think_v a_o good_a thought_n what_o be_v he_o sufficient_a for_o then_o and_o say_v he_o in_o another_o place_n i_o can_v so_o much_o as_o will_v or_o desire_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a it_o be_v god_n say_v he_o that_o work_v in_o we_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o own_o good_a pleasure_n and_o say_v he_o in_o 2_o cor._n 12.11_o though_o i_o be_v nothing_o what_o a_o word_n be_v this_o the_o apostle_n paul_n that_o be_v one_o of_o the_o eminent_a saint_n that_o live_v upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n in_o his_o day_n yet_o say_v he_o i_o be_o nothing_o paul_n live_v by_o faith_n be_v empty_v of_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o own_o sufficiency_n and_o true_o so_o also_o he_o be_v empty_v of_o self-worthiness_n of_o receive_v any_o mercy_n from_o god_n for_o all_o his_o duty_n and_o service_n say_v he_o i_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o all_o saint_n and_o ephes_n 3.8_o to_o i_o who_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o all_o saint_n be_v this_o grace_n give_v etc._n etc._n and_o in_o 1_o cor._n 15.9_o say_v he_o i_o be_o the_o least_o of_o the_o apostle_n that_o be_o not_o worthy_a to_o be_v call_v a_o apostle_n so_o if_o you_o observe_v it_o you_o may_v find_v it_o in_o all_o those_o that_o live_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n how_o they_o have_v be_v empty_v of_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o own_o worthiness_n abraham_n the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a see_v how_o he_o lay_v low_a and_o even_o creep_v in_o the_o dust_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o acknowledge_v himself_o not_o worthy_a to_o speak_v to_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n for_o sodom_n that_o he_o be_v fain_o to_o apologise_v for_o himself_o at_o every_o turn_n let_v not_o the_o lord_n be_v angry_a that_o i_o who_o be_o but_o dust_n and_o ash_n have_v undertake_v to_o speak_v unto_o the_o lord_n gen._n 18.27_o 30_o 32._o i_o be_o unworthy_a say_v he_o to_o speak_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o any_o mercy_n either_o for_o myself_o or_o sodom_n and_o so_o jacob_n lord_n say_v he_o i_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o all_o thy_o mercy_n gen._n 32.10_o i_o be_o not_o worthy_a of_o the_o least_o mercy_n from_o thou_o thus_o faith_n do_v empty_a the_o soul_n both_o of_o selfsufficiency_n and_o also_o of_o self-worthiness_n now_o then_o to_o show_v you_o how_o you_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o this_o rule_n it_o will_v serve_v for_o every_o duty_n that_o we_o perform_v when_o we_o come_v to_o pray_v we_o shall_v draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o this_o sense_n of_o our_o insufficiency_n to_o lift_v up_o a_o prayer_n unto_o god_n we_o shall_v come_v to_o god_n with_o a_o sense_n upon_o our_o heart_n of_o our_o inability_n to_o perform_v the_o work_n and_o also_o with_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n that_o god_n shall_v hear_v our_o prayer_n when_o we_o have_v pray_v never_o so_o well_o as_o other_o may_v judge_v yet_o we_o must_v come_v with_o self-abasing_a and_o self-emptying_a so_o if_o we_o go_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n if_o we_o will_v hear_v in_o faith_n we_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o this_o rule_n lord_n i_o be_o unworthy_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o hear_v thy_o word_n i_o be_o unworthy_a that_o thou_o shall_v speak_v to_o i_o and_o i_o be_o insufficient_a to_o hear_v thy_o word_n as_o i_o ought_v to_o hear_v it_o thus_o come_v with_o self-emptying_a and_o self-abasement_n so_o when_o we_o upon_o â—â—â—m_n all_o our_o service_n and_o sacrifice_n must_v be_v â—â—â—ered_v or_o else_o they_o be_v not_o accept_v of_o god_n therefore_o whatever_o you_o do_v whatever_o prayer_n you_o make_v whatever_o ordinance_n you_o partake_v 〈◊〉_d do_v all_o in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n or_o else_o you_o do_v not_o do_v it_o in_o faith_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v please_v unto_o god_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v it_o to_o perform_v a_o duty_n in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o as_o it_o may_v be_v acceptable_a and_o please_a to_o god_n answ_n for_o answer_v brethren_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o make_v mention_n of_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n in_o our_o prayer_n and_o to_o say_v through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n as_o you_o common_o conclude_v your_o prayer_n i_o do_v not_o blame_v you_o for_o this_o but_o it_o be_v not_o the_o name_n of_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v this_o do_v of_o it_o in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n what_o be_v it_o then_o you_o will_v say_v for_o i_o to_o pray_v or_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o partake_v of_o any_o ordinance_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n brief_o for_o i_o will_v not_o enlarge_v there_o be_v these_o three_o thing_n imply_v in_o it_o first_o that_o we_o do_v look_v for_o our_o access_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n through_o christ_n and_o for_o his_o sake_n say_v the_o apostle_n in_o ephes_n 2.18_o for_o through_o he_o we_o both_o have_v a_o access_n by_o one_o spirit_n unto_o the_o father_n through_o he_o we_o both_o that_o be_v both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n have_v access_n by_o one_o spirit_n unto_o the_o father_n we_o have_v access_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o father_n through_o christ_n you_o know_v brethren_n after_o adam_n fall_v and_o transgress_v he_o be_v drive_v out_o from_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n before_o indeed_o he_o have_v communion_n with_o god_n and_o access_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n but_o after_o he_o have_v break_v the_o covenant_n that_o god_n have_v make_v with_o he_o he_o be_v
and_o please_a unto_o god_n because_o it_o be_v not_o do_v in_o faith_n it_o must_v be_v a_o prayer_n of_o faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n james_n call_v it_o so_o to_o pray_v as_o to_o be_v persuade_v to_o believe_v and_o rest_v upon_o god_n that_o so_o far_o as_o my_o prayer_n be_v according_a to_o his_o will_n he_o will_v hear_v and_o answer_v in_o his_o own_o time_n and_o in_o his_o own_o way_n and_o so_o for_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n you_o may_v make_v use_n of_o this_o rule_n namely_o to_o rest_v and_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n and_o expect_v something_o to_o be_v give_v out_o from_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o very_a ordinance_n for_o which_o the_o ordinance_n be_v appoint_v namely_o to_o hear_v something_o speak_v from_o god_n to_o i_o that_o i_o may_v be_v further_o acquaint_v withal_o in_o acts._n 10.33_o see_v what_o cornelius_n speak_v to_o peter_n peter_n be_v send_v from_o god_n to_o speak_v to_o he_o say_v he_o we_o be_v all_o here_o present_a before_o god_n to_o hear_v what_o god_n shall_v speak_v we_o be_v all_o here_o present_a before_o the_o lord_n expect_v to_o have_v something_o speak_v from_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n ordinance_n and_o we_o we_o do_v not_o hear_v in_o faith_n we_o shall_v come_v with_o a_o expectation_n to_o hear_v something_o from_o god_n i_o will_v hearken_v to_o hear_v what_o god_n the_o lord_n will_v speak_v to_o i_o it_o be_v his_o ordinance_n and_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o communicate_v of_o himself_o to_o we_o and_o so_o we_o must_v rest_v and_o rely_v upon_o the_o lord_n by_o faith_n for_o something_o to_o be_v speak_v that_o may_v be_v of_o concernment_n to_o we_o and_o so_o for_o receive_v the_o lords-supper_n this_o general_a rule_n will_v help_v you_o in_o that_o come_v to_o that_o ordinance_n rest_v upon_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n expect_v something_o from_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v give_v out_o in_o that_o ordinance_n for_o which_o the_o ordinance_n especial_o be_v appoint_v and_o what_o be_v that_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n and_o a_o communication_n and_o participation_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 10.16_o say_v the_o apostle_n there_o the_o bread_n which_o we_o break_v be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v procure_v and_o purchase_v by_o christ_n death_n and_o bloodshed_n now_o then_o i_o say_v here_o be_v the_o rule_n when_o we_o come_v to_o a_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n come_v in_o a_o way_n of_o rest_v and_o expectation_n to_o have_v something_o communicate_v to_o we_o from_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o ordinance_n something_o of_o that_o which_o god_n have_v appoint_v the_o ordinance_n and_o duty_n for_o so_o now_o you_o see_v here_o be_v five_o general_a rule_n that_o may_v help_v we_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o spiritual_a duty_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n so_o as_o we_o may_v please_v god_n in_o they_o and_o o_o brethren_n and_o friend_n shall_v any_o of_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o perform_v duty_n and_o enjoy_v ordinance_n in_o vain_a from_o day_n to_o day_n why_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v if_o we_o go_v on_o not_o to_o act_v faith_n in_o what_o we_o do_v all_o will_v be_v in_o vain_a and_o be_v you_o willing_a to_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o perform_v and_o the_o ordinance_n that_o you_o enjoy_v true_o if_o we_o do_v not_o act_v faith_n in_o they_o we_o shall_v instead_o of_o be_v the_o better_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o they_o we_o can_v please_v god_n but_o shall_v displease_v he_o more_o and_o more_o and_o so_o be_v we_o willing_a to_o meet_v with_o disappointment_n at_o last_o when_o we_o come_v to_o lie_v down_o upon_o our_o sickbed_n and_o deathbed_n and_o expect_v that_o we_o have_v be_v please_v god_n by_o what_o we_o have_v do_v and_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o a_o disappointment_n because_o we_o have_v do_v nothing_o in_o faith_n and_o so_o have_v not_o please_v god_n but_o displease_v he_o and_o be_v you_o willing_a to_o deceive_v your_o own_o soul_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v we_o may_v go_v on_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o service_n and_o steer_v a_o wrong_a course_n miss_v of_o christ_n if_o our_o duty_n and_o service_n be_v not_o touch_v with_o the_o loadstone_n of_o faith_n therefore_o i_o say_v brethren_n it_o be_v of_o concernment_n to_o we_o to_o consider_v these_o general_a rule_n that_o have_v be_v give_v to_o direct_v we_o how_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o enjoy_v ordinance_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n there_o be_v particular_a rule_n that_o i_o shall_v desire_v if_o the_o lord_n please_v to_o lay_v down_o how_o we_o may_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n and_o then_o show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n in_o faith_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v please_v god_n and_o profit_v our_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o come_v afterward_o to_o some_o other_o thing_n as_o the_o lord_n give_v opportunity_n but_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o time_n sermon_n vii_o hebrew_n xi_o 6._o but_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v he_o doct._n this_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o proposition_n before_o we_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o soul_n to_o please_v god_n without_o faith_n the_o last_o time_n we_o come_v to_o enter_v upon_o some_o direction_n how_o we_o may_v so_o exercise_v faith_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o ordinance_n that_o so_o what_o we_o do_v may_v please_v god_n some_o general_a direction_n be_v lay_v down_o that_o may_v serve_v for_o all_o duty_n i_o shall_v now_o go_v on_o through_o the_o lord_n assistance_n and_o give_v you_o some_o more_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o may_v perform_v particular_a duty_n in_o faith_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n 1._o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o shall_v begin_v with_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n and_o show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n as_o we_o may_v please_v god_n for_o that_o be_v the_o prayer_n that_o god_n do_v accept_v that_o be_v a_o prayer_n of_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o james_n 5.15_o that_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n shall_v save_v the_o sick_a that_o be_v there_o must_v be_v faith_n exercise_v in_o our_o prayer_n or_o else_o our_o prayer_n be_v not_o true_a prayer_n such_o as_o god_n accept_v suppose_v a_o man_n be_v a_o believer_n and_o have_v a_o habit_n of_o faith_n he_o pray_v yet_o if_o he_o do_v not_o exercise_v faith_n in_o his_o prayer_n he_o pray_v not_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n and_o it_o will_v not_o avail_v james_n 1.6_o if_o any_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n he_o must_v pray_v to_o god_n for_o it_o but_o say_v he_o let_v he_o pray_v in_o faith_n for_o else_o if_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v in_o faith_n his_o prayer_n will_v not_o avail_v and_o he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a for_o he_o write_v to_o the_o twelve_o tribe_n among_o who_o be_v many_o faithful_a and_o believer_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n but_o let_v he_o ask_v it_o in_o faith_n nothing_o waver_v for_o else_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o please_v to_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o another_o case_n 1_o cor._n 14.19_o i_o have_v rather_o speak_v five_o word_n with_o my_o understanding_n than_o ten_o thousand_o word_n in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n so_o i_o may_v say_v in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n have_v better_a put_v up_o five_o prayer_n in_o faith_n than_o ten_o thousand_o prayer_n without_o faith_n and_o though_o we_o speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n in_o prayer_n if_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n it_o be_v more_o available_a than_o if_o we_o speak_v never_o so_o many_o word_n never_o so_o large_o without_o faith_n quest_n well_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o so_o act_v faith_n in_o prayer_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n answ_n for_o answer_v beside_o what_o be_v presuppose_v before_o that_o the_o person_n must_v be_v a_o believer_n and_o also_o pass_v by_o those_o general_a rule_n of_o direction_n lay_v down_o before_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o four_o or_o five_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o shall_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n namely_o first_o
i_o do_v be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n yet_o i_o may_v not_o please_v god_n in_o what_o i_o do_v except_o there_o be_v another_o faith_n which_o be_v this_o namely_o a_o actual_a exercise_n of_o the_o principle_n and_o habit_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o perform_v all_o our_o duty_n must_v be_v do_v with_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v a_o believer_n and_o do_v go_v about_o this_o thing_n and_o that_o thing_n and_o run_v away_o with_o this_o notion_n that_o he_o please_v god_n in_o what_o he_o do_v but_o it_o be_v require_v that_o he_o must_v actual_o exercise_v faith_n in_o what_o he_o do_v as_o for_o example_n for_o prayer_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v a_o believer_n go_v to_o prayer_n and_o he_o be_v persuade_v in_o his_o conscience_n that_o what_o he_o pray_v for_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o but_o if_o his_o prayer_n please_v god_n he_o must_v put_v forth_o a_o fresh_a act_n of_o faith_n in_o his_o prayer_n what_o he_o ask_v for_o he_o must_v ask_v in_o faith_n whatsoever_o you_o shall_v ask_v in_o prayer_n believe_v say_v christ_n you_o shall_v receive_v though_o a_o man_n be_v a_o believer_n yet_o he_o must_v believe_v still_o and_o in_o jam._n 1.5_o 6._o if_o any_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n etc._n etc._n but_o let_v he_o ask_v it_o in_o faith_n though_o he_o be_v a_o believer_n yet_o let_v he_o ask_v in_o faith_n for_o if_o he_o ask_v without_o act_v his_o faith_n it_o be_v nothing_o it_o be_v not_o please_v to_o god_n he_o must_v act_v faith_n in_o his_o prayer_n and_o so_o for_o hear_v the_o word_n a_o believer_n come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o what_o he_o hear_v he_o be_v persuade_v it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n well_o but_o be_v this_o enough_o no_o he_o must_v act_v faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o else_o it_o will_v be_v unprofitable_a to_o he_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o hebrew_n 4.2_o the_o word_n preach_v do_v not_o profit_v they_o not_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n in_o they_o that_o hear_v it_o there_o must_v be_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n we_o must_v mix_v faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n we_o must_v act_v faith_n in_o all_o our_o duty_n &_o performance_n so_o far_o as_o we_o be_v want_v so_o i_o may_v instance_n in_o other_o thing_n as_o in_o give_v of_o alm_n and_o other_o thing_n and_o so_o if_o you_o observe_v it_o abel_n be_v not_o only_o a_o believer_n and_o have_v the_o faith_n also_o of_o persuasion_n that_o what_o he_o do_v offer_n be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n ay_o but_o abel_n go_v further_o also_o when_o he_o please_v god_n in_o his_o sacrifice_n in_o all_o his_o sacrifice_n that_o he_o offer_v up_o he_o do_v act_v faith_n and_o so_o by_o his_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v a_o believer_n his_o offering_n and_o sacrifice_n be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o enoch_n our_o present_a example_n before_o we_o he_o be_v a_o believer_n and_o be_v persuade_v that_o what_o he_o do_v be_v according_a to_o to_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n but_o he_o walk_v with_o god_n that_o be_v he_o do_v act_v faith_n in_o all_o his_o service_n that_o he_o do_v in_o the_o step_n of_o his_o walk_n he_o please_v god_n in_o his_o walk_n which_o must_v be_v by_o faith_n by_o act_v of_o faith_n in_o his_o duty_n and_o service_n and_o walk_v with_o god_n by_o that_o mean_v he_o come_v to_o please_v god_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o brethren_n that_o i_o have_v a_o principle_n of_o faith_n in_o i_o that_o i_o do_v believe_v in_o christ_n and_o that_o what_o i_o do_v i_o be_o persuade_v be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o please_v god_n in_o the_o duty_n and_o service_n that_o i_o perform_v but_o i_o must_v exercise_v faith_n in_o the_o duty_n and_o service_n that_o god_n require_v of_o i_o say_v the_o apostle_n paul_n in_o gal._n 7.2_o 20._o i_o be_o crucify_v with_o christ_n how_o do_v he_o know_v that_o say_v he_o christ_n live_v in_o i_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n and_o say_v he_o the_o life_n that_o have_v a_o soul_n in_o his_o body_n have_v a_o principle_n of_o natural_a life_n but_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o but_o now_o to_o every_o natural_a action_n of_o life_n that_o he_o put_v forth_o there_o must_v be_v a_o influence_n from_o that_o principle_n of_o life_n or_o else_o he_o can_v act_v so_o though_o christ_n be_v a_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n in_o we_o yet_o notwithstanding_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n must_v act_v spiritual_o he_o must_v derive_v strength_n and_o virtue_n and_o influence_n from_o christ_n to_o every_o duty_n and_o service_n that_o he_o perform_v to_o make_v it_o acceptable_a to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o else_o a_o spiritual_a action_n this_o be_v now_o the_o faith_n that_o be_v require_v in_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n that_o will_v please_v god_n and_o without_o this_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n i_o pray_v mind_n it_o though_o i_o can_v come_v to_o the_o application_n now_o yet_o remember_v it_o and_o observe_v it_o possible_o you_o may_v think_v yourselves_o what_o may_v be_v reduce_v from_o it_o i_o say_v without_o this_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n but_o now_o with_o this_o faith_n though_o our_o performance_n and_o service_n be_v defective_a yet_o we_o come_v to_o please_v god_n in_o do_v of_o they_o quest_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v all_o age_n read_v over_o the_o 11_o of_o the_o hebrew_n at_o your_o leisure_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o all_o of_o they_o do_v please_v god_n by_o their_o faith_n abel_n he_o please_v god_n by_o his_o faith_n enoch_n please_v god_n by_o faith_n and_o noah_n please_v god_n by_o faith_n these_o be_v before_o the_o flood_n afterward_o abraham_n by_o faith_n please_v god_n for_o he_o be_v the_o friend_n of_o god_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n be_v faithful_a and_o they_o please_v god_n they_o may_v have_v their_o fail_n and_o infirmity_n and_o weakness_n as_o noah_n have_v he_o be_v overtake_v with_o drink_v of_o wine_n and_o so_o the_o rest_n have_v their_o weakness_n but_o for_o all_o that_o they_o please_v god_n by_o their_o faith_n god_n overlook_v their_o infirmity_n and_o much_o in_o a_o way_n of_o charity_n perform_v good_a work_n and_o be_v give_v to_o alms-deed_n in_o relieve_v the_o poor_a saint_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o this_o please_a unto_o god_n if_o i_o suffer_v for_o the_o truth_n sake_n do_v not_o this_o please_v god_n why_o do_v but_o observe_v and_o consider_v what_o the_o apostle_n here_o say_v without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o consider_v also_o what_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n 13.3_o say_v he_o though_o i_o give_v all_o my_o good_n to_o feed_v the_o poor_a and_o if_o i_o give_v my_o body_n to_o will_v displease_v he_o more_o this_o be_v to_o run_v headlong_o and_o desperate_o into_o the_o low_a hell_n as_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o glory_n in_o heaven_n as_o one_o star_n differ_v from_o another_o star_n in_o glory_n so_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o torment_n in_o hell_n it_o shall_v be_v more_o tolerable_a for_o sodom_n and_o gommorah_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n than_o for_o those_o that_o have_v the_o gospel_n and_o do_v not_o improve_v it_o as_o she_o have_v fare_v delicious_o say_v god_n so_o much_o the_o more_o torment_n give_v she_o say_v god_n in_o revelation_n 18.7_o so_o now_o because_o we_o do_v displease_v god_n by_o what_o we_o do_v in_o our_o duty_n and_o service_n therefore_o shall_v we_o run_v further_o on_o to_o displease_v god_n more_o and_o more_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o to_o displease_v god_n by_o do_v thing_n irregular_o and_o unbelieve_o but_o shall_v we_o therefore_o run_v headlong_o upon_o wickedness_n and_o care_v not_o how_o much_o we_o make_v conscience_n of_o your_o way_n in_o buy_v and_o sell_v and_o trade_v and_o converse_v with_o the_o world_n to_o walk_v upright_o towards_o all_o man_n and_o what_o do_v not_o this_o please_v god_n you_o will_v say_v do_v not_o i_o please_v god_n in_o this_o i_o pray_v mark_n be_v this_o faith_n or_o no_o the_o apostle_n say_v here_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v it_o be_v all_o in_o vain_a true_o thus_o it_o will_v be_v if_o it_o be_v not_o do_v in_o faith_n you_o have_v pray_v so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o week_n and_o so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o year_n possible_o a_o thousand_o time_n in_o your_o life_n yet_o all_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o you_o see_v you_o can_v please_v god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a you_o desire_v to_o please_v god_n and_o all_o for_o loss_n he_o be_v the_o worse_o and_o not_o the_o better_a as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o woman_n that_o have_v the_o bloody_a issue_n she_o go_v to_o the_o physician_n and_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o still_o she_o be_v not_o the_o better_a but_o the_o worse_o you_o will_v count_v this_o a_o very_a uncomfortable_a thing_n if_o any_o of_o your_o child_n or_o relation_n shall_v be_v sick_a and_o you_o call_v for_o the_o help_n of_o the_o physician_n and_o he_o apply_v mean_n and_o still_o all_o the_o physic_n that_o be_v take_v tend_v to_o the_o hurt_n of_o the_o party_n he_o be_v never_o the_o better_a but_o the_o worse_a for_o all_o the_o mean_n that_o be_v use_v true_o it_o will_v make_v your_o heart_n ache_v true_o thus_o it_o be_v when_o a_o man_n have_v be_v take_v pain_n all_o his_o life-long_a exercise_v of_o himself_o in_o holy_a duty_n and_o ordinance_n worship_v and_o serve_v god_n and_o endeavour_v to_o please_v god_n as_o he_o think_v but_o now_o instead_o of_o please_a god_n by_o what_o he_o have_v do_v he_o have_v rather_o displease_v god_n for_o certain_o we_o be_v either_o the_o better_o or_o the_o worse_a for_o every_o ordinance_n that_o
