more_o keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n than_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o have_v quiet_a of_o conscience_n that_o way_n yeâ—_n not_o only_o keep_v from_o christ_n but_o further_o they_o set_v up_o their_o duty_n in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v their_o very_a justification_n what_o be_v it_o that_o many_o people_n will_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o righteousness_n and_o hope_n of_o heaven_n but_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n require_v now_o here_o be_v a_o mighty_a have_v open_v to_o you_o in_o this_o point_n you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whence_o all_o your_o trouble_n come_v whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o you_o have_v go_v on_o in_o that_o sadness_n and_o heaviness_n as_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v do_v your_o duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n you_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v do_v christ_n call_v to_o these_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n as_o if_o he_o do_v approve_v of_o their_o condition_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v burden_v by_o these_o legal_a performance_n answ_n there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o burden_n here_o that_o it_o be_v true_a aught_o to_o be_v and_o christ_n approve_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n etc._n etc._n and_o christ_n call_v these_o as_o approve_v of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a though_o not_o true_o good_a but_o there_o be_v other_o burden_n that_o be_v upon_o sinner_n that_o christ_n call_v to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o not_o as_o they_o be_v approve_v of_o by_o christ_n but_o christ_n pity_v they_o and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o those_o that_o be_v under_o those_o burden_n as_o be_v under_o a_o great_a misery_n as_o now_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n when_o christ_n shall_v see_v a_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n to_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a estate_n upon_o he_o to_o labour_n and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o think_v by_o this_o to_o make_v law_n require_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a part_n but_o the_o will_v work_v and_o to_o be_v put_v upon_o to_o struggle_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o prayer_n though_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o go_v to_o prayer_n for_o their_o conscience_n else_o will_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n in_o the_o day_n time_n these_o be_v just_a like_o the_o a_o burden_n be_v this_o to_o a_o soul_n to_o think_v that_o i_o can_v never_o go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n but_o i_o have_v still_o a_o dead_a straight_a heart_n other_o have_v enlarge_v heart_n but_o i_o do_v the_o duty_n and_o nothing_o come_v of_o it_o i_o feel_v my_o heart_n altogether_o straighten_a in_o the_o duty_n and_o so_o i_o go_v on_o in_o the_o round_n but_o still_o be_o straiten_v dead_a and_o dull_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n the_o 7._o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 7._o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n find_v nothing_o to_o come_v of_o their_o duty_n but_o be_v mere_o as_o a_o horse_n in_o the_o mil_fw-mi go_v the_o round_n or_o as_o if_o a_o man_n be_v to_o rive_v or_o cleave_v a_o knotty_a piece_n of_o wood_n he_o strike_v but_o the_o knottiness_n of_o the_o wood_n give_v the_o rebound_n to_o the_o axe_n and_o wedge_n and_o he_o can_v make_v no_o mark_n of_o it_o though_o a_o man_n strive_v and_o work_v hard_a yet_o if_o he_o find_v his_o work_n go_v on_o here_o be_v some_o comfort_n but_o when_o he_o work_v and_o work_n and_o it_o continue_v so_o still_o this_o be_v burdensome_a if_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v set_v to_o pull_v a_o log_n out_o of_o a_o ditch_n and_o enjoin_v to_o work_v from_o morning_n to_o night_n and_o he_o pull_v and_o pull_v all_o the_o day_n and_o it_o stir_v not_o be_v no_o further_o on_o in_o his_o work_n at_o night_n than_o he_o be_v in_o the_o morning_n and_o he_o must_v go_v to_o it_o the_o next_o day_n and_o nothing_o come_v of_o his_o work_n this_o be_v very_o tedious_a so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a in_o their_o performance_n they_o find_v little_a or_o nothing_o come_v of_o all_o their_o performance_n and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a you_o that_o have_v be_v thus_o burden_v know_v this_o very_a text_n concern_v you_o and_o christ_n have_v thought_n of_o you_o and_o call_v you_o to_o himself_o and_o at_o profit_n many_o will_v make_v a_o show_n of_o religion_n get_v into_o house_n and_o talk_v of_o good_a thing_n that_o they_o may_v get_v good_a cheer_n meat_n and_o drink_n and_o a_o little_a gain_n be_v of_o a_o poor_a and_o unworthy_a spirit_n but_o i_o speak_v of_o those_o that_o be_v grow_v high_a than_o thuâ—_n those_o that_o perform_v duty_n out_o of_o conscience_n and_o yet_o never_o attain_v to_o their_o end_n nor_o never_o will_v attain_v to_o their_o end_n in_o this_o way_n till_o they_o come_v to_o know_v more_o of_o christ_n i_o speak_v of_o such_o as_o desire_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n yet_o in_o this_o way_n of_o legal_a performance_n never_o gain_v this_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a unto_o they_o the_o 9_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 9_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n they_o go_v on_o and_o perform_v duty_n but_o whether_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o yea_o or_o no_o they_o can_v tell_v do_v they_o they_o must_v but_o whether_o god_n be_v their_o enemy_n or_o their_o friend_n they_o can_v tell_v tender_v up_o duty_n to_o god_n they_o do_v every_o day_n but_o whether_o they_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o a_o enemy_n or_o a_o friend_n they_o do_v not_o know_v sometime_o they_o have_v perhaps_o some_o good_a hope_n that_o god_n accept_v they_o but_o never_o come_v to_o any_o knowledge_n of_o god_n acceptance_n they_o go_v up_o and_o down_o continual_o with_o jealous_a thought_n of_o god_n fear_v leaâ—â—od_a will_v take_v advantage_n by_o this_o mean_v they_o be_v hurry_v on_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n though_o by_o the_o do_n of_o it_o at_o that_o time_n they_o shall_v hinder_v themselves_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o and_o i_o have_v know_v by_o experience_n many_o that_o have_v be_v greivous_o burden_v this_o way_n what_o they_o present_o apprehend_v to_o have_v any_o good_a in_o it_o that_o they_o think_v they_o must_v do_v although_o they_o by_o that_o be_v hinder_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o whereas_o now_o if_o we_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o liberty_n we_o have_v in_o christ_n we_o will_v be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o this_o way_n though_o i_o be_o weak_a now_o yet_o i_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o my_o heart_n be_v upright_o and_o though_o i_o do_v forbear_v the_o do_v of_o such_o a_o thing_n that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v good_a yet_o my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o it_o be_v not_o through_o a_o wilful_a knowledge_n of_o their_o liberty_n in_o jesus_n christ_n for_o they_o have_v this_o liberty_n in_o christ_n that_o christ_n accept_v of_o they_o according_a to_o what_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o this_o acceptance_n that_o let_v they_o go_v on_o to_o do_v what_o they_o be_v command_v in_o uprightness_n and_o though_o they_o can_v do_v such_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v weak_a yet_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o for_o christ_n sake_n which_o one_o that_o be_v legal_a can_v do_v but_o conscience_n hurry_v he_o on_o to_o do_v rhe_n duty_n when_o he_o be_v most_o weak_a and_o so_o he_o do_v less_o for_o god_n then_o otherwise_o he_o will_v or_o shall_v do_v the_o 11._o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 11._o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n go_v on_o toil_a but_o still_o they_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o they_o shall_v hold_v out_o or_o no_o i_o go_v on_o and_o do_v my_o duty_n but_o what_o will_v become_v of_o i_o god_n know_v i_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o i_o shall_v hold_v out_o or_o no_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o when_o i_o have_v do_v all_o labour_v and_o toil_v what_o i_o can_v that_o i_o shall_v prove_v a_o apostate_n a_o backslider_n at_o last_o thus_o they_o have_v many_o such_o jealousy_n of_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v full_a of_o jealousy_n of_o god_n so_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o themselves_o well_o if_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n come_v i_o shall_v fall_v off_o and_o turn_v and_o manifest_a that_o i_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o always_o unsound_a now_o these_o very_a thought_n make_v their_o life_n and_o duty_n burdensome_a unto_o they_o whenas_o one_o that_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o freedom_n of_o the_o gospel_n one_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n he_o can_v go_v on_o well_o though_o i_o be_o but_o weak_a yet_o i_o have_v a_o everlasting_a principle_n that_o will_v hold_v for_o i_o do_v it_o by_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v everlasting_a though_o i_o be_v weak_a yet_o i_o be_o fasten_v to_o that_o that_o be_v everlasting_a i_o be_o carry_v on_o by_o such_o a_o principle_n that_o will_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n and_o oh_o what_o a_o rest_n be_v this_o here_o be_v rest_n indeed_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o know_v that_o though_o i_o be_o weak_a yet_o i_o shall_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n whenas_o one_o that_o be_v legal_a he_o be_v ever_o jealous_a and_o he_o think_v what_o do_v i_o this_o for_o i_o shall_v fall_v off_o at_o last_o and_o so_o go_v on_o heavy_o and_o be_v trouble_v in_o his_o thought_n and_o this_o make_v both_o his_o duty_n and_o his_o life_n burdensome_a still_o i_o say_v christ_n call_v upon_o all_o these_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o still_o there_o be_v a_o rest_n in_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o shall_v speak_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n at_o once_o but_o now_o i_o will_v only_o find_v out_o those_o that_o christ_n call_v you_o that_o find_v it_o thus_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v just_a as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o word_n i_o find_v it_o in_o my_o heart_n i_o only_o speak_v to_o you_o to_o raise_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o attend_v to_o what_o be_v further_o to_o be_v say_v afterward_o only_o remember_v that_o of_o the_o poor_a blind_a man_n when_o christ_n call_v he_o they_o comfort_v he_o with_o this_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n he_o call_v thou_o so_o i_o say_v to_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o this_o burden_n and_o long_a to_o know_v the_o true_a liberty_n of_o spirit_n that_o the_o saint_n have_v in_o christ_n christ_n call_v to_o you_o and_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o 12._o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 12._o those_o that_o be_v thus_o legal_a their_o conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o performance_n of_o duty_n but_o their_o humiliation_n and_o trouble_n for_o not_o do_v of_o what_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v do_v hinder_v they_o from_o do_v what_o god_n require_v and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n that_o when_o i_o have_v not_o do_v my_o duty_n and_o be_o trouble_v for_o not_o do_v my_o duty_n that_o do_v hinder_v i_o from_o do_v my_o duty_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v evangelical_n humiliation_n it_o make_v they_o more_o fit_a to_o do_v duty_n the_o other_o it_o make_v they_o more_o unfit_a their_o heart_n be_v more_o sullen_a fretful_a and_o untoward_a and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n that_o not_o only_o they_o fail_v in_o other_o duty_n but_o when_o they_o be_v trouble_v for_o this_o they_o fail_v moâ—e_n first_o they_o fail_v of_o their_o duty_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v a_o great_a while_n and_o then_o they_o complain_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v and_o that_o they_o can_v be_v humble_v for_o their_o sin_n after_o this_o complaint_n they_o begin_v to_o be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o they_o be_v trouble_v after_o such_o away_o as_o they_o grow_v sullen_a and_o discontent_a vex_v and_o fret_v of_o themselves_o and_o by_o this_o they_o come_v to_o be_v hinder_v as_o much_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o duty_n as_o by_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o heart_n before_o some_o be_v hinder_v by_o their_o hardness_n of_o heart_n from_o perform_v of_o duty_n and_o other_o by_o their_o humility_n now_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a burden_n you_o may_v some_o of_o you_o find_v it_o in_o your_o own_o experience_n that_o the_o trouble_n of_o your_o heart_n have_v rather_o hinder_v you_o then_o further_v you_o in_o duty_n as_o in_o exodus_fw-la when_o moses_n come_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n the_o text_n say_v they_o do_v not_o harken_v unto_o he_o because_o of_o the_o anguish_n of_o their_o heart_n so_o there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o have_v such_o legal_a trouble_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o that_o for_o their_o sin_n as_o it_o do_v hinder_v they_o from_o harken_v unto_o the_o bless_a sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o make_v they_o more_o unfit_a to_o harken_v to_o the_o invitation_n of_o christ_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o yea_o such_o kind_n of_o trouble_n they_o have_v for_o their_o sin_n that_o make_v they_o as_o it_o be_v reason_n away_o the_o bless_a comfort_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o their_o soul_n chap._n x._o the_o sad_a condition_n of_o such_o as_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n set_v forth_o in_o six_o particular_n 1._o that_o which_o shall_v be_v account_v their_o happiness_n be_v their_o misery_n 2._o it_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o cause_v hard_a thought_n of_o god_n 3._o it_o cause_v great_a discouragement_n 4._o they_o bring_v a_o
now_o this_o i_o may_v show_v you_o in_o abundance_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o very_a first_o commission_n that_o jesus_n christ_n give_v unto_o his_o apostle_n after_o his_o resurrection_n to_o go_v and_o preach_v throughout_o the_o world_n he_o say_v unto_o they_o in_o mark_n 16.15_o verse_n go_v you_o into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v this_o be_v clear_a that_o christ_n will_v have_v we_o in_o our_o first_o believe_v to_o have_v a_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a and_o so_o we_o find_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o promise_n as_o this_o be_v in_o the_o text_n in_o jer._n 6.16_o verse_n thus_o say_v the_o lord_n stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o see_v and_o ask_v for_o the_o old_a path_n where_o the_o good_a way_n be_v and_o walk_v therein_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n inquire_v after_o the_o good_a way_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n so_o that_o you_o see_v god_n propound_v duty_n together_o with_o promise_n the_o lord_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o what_o will_v work_v most_o upon_o we_o and_o therefore_o for_o we_o to_o think_v that_o we_o must_v have_v no_o aim_n at_o all_o of_o any_o good_a to_o ourselves_o in_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o grace_n but_o self-love_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o our_o own_o good_a this_o be_v a_o temptation_n i_o speak_v the_o rather_o this_o point_n because_o i_o know_v how_o useful_a it_o be_v unto_o many_o poor_a soul_n who_o the_o lord_n be_v draw_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n the_o lord_n have_v take_v off_o their_o heart_n from_o sinful_a self_n they_o will_v not_o enjoy_v themselves_o in_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o former_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v they_o willing_a to_o deny_v their_o own_o opinion_n their_o own_o will_n their_o own_o affection_n their_o former_a way_n to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prize_v he_o and_o christ_n and_o his_o way_n the_o way_n of_o christ_n more_o than_o they_o prize_v their_o very_a life_n here_o in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o there_o come_v a_o temptation_n upon_o they_o i_o but_o you_o seek_v christ_n only_o to_o free_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o to_o save_v you_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v but_o self-love_n it_o be_v no_o true_a grace_n because_o that_o you_o aim_v at_o yourselves_o rather_o than_o christ_n the_o devil_n can_v prevail_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o all_o you_o seek_v christ_n to_o save_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v you_o to_o heaven_n that_o be_v it_o that_o you_o seek_v christ_n for_o and_o therefore_o i_o know_v your_o heart_n be_v not_o right_a all_o this_o while_n this_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o seize_v upon_o many_o man_n now_o i_o confess_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o be_v beyond_o many_o man_n they_o do_v not_o know_v what_o this_o temptation_n be_v that_o i_o prize_v christ_n only_o to_o deliver_v i_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v i_o to_o heaven_n this_o temptation_n be_v above_o the_o high_a form_n of_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n then_o ordinary_a professor_n now_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o text_n thus_o answer_v this_o temptation_n the_o soul_n thus_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a i_o do_v seek_v christ_n to_o save_v i_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v i_o to_o heaven_n the_o fear_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o great_a god_n under_o which_o i_o see_v myself_o to_o be_v and_o the_o displeasure_n my_o soul_n that_o there_o be_v none_o but_o jesus_n christ_n the_o mediator_n of_o the_o second_o covenant_n that_o be_v able_a to_o make_v up_o the_o breach_n and_o my_o soul_n make_v after_o he_o as_o the_o mediator_n as_o he_o be_v propound_v in_o the_o word_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v a_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o mankind_n so_o my_o soul_n make_v after_o he_o and_o close_v with_o he_o and_o what_o can_v the_o devil_n say_v to_o this_o for_o my_o heart_n do_v close_o with_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n that_o christ_n be_v tender_v unto_o i_o in_o the_o gospel_n for_o so_o he_o be_v tender_v god_n himself_o say_v thus_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v forth_o his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n thus_o god_n set_v forth_o his_o son_n as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v thus_o be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o o_o poor_a wretched_a sinful_a creature_n that_o be_v in_o first_o conversion_n do_v ordinary_o make_v use_n of_o the_o creature_n self-love_n but_o it_o be_v of_o self-love_n for_o eternity_n and_o that_o be_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o self-love_n than_o the_o most_o people_n in_o the_o world_n do_v attain_v unto_o some_o people_n in_o the_o world_n they_o love_v themselves_o only_o for_o this_o present_a life_n but_o when_o god_n make_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o love_v himself_o for_o eternity_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o the_o heart_n and_o
look_v upon_o their_o faith_n as_o legal_a as_o thus_o because_o their_o faith_n do_v not_o come_v up_o so_o full_o to_o the_o perfection_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n yea_o to_o that_o perfection_n that_o the_o law_n require_v in_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o though_o the_o law_n do_v not_o mention_v any_o thing_n of_o our_o believe_a in_o christ_n yet_o thus_o much_o the_o law_n require_v that_o what_o we_o do_v shall_v be_v tender_v up_o to_o god_n and_o what_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n with_o perfection_n now_o believer_n look_v upon_o what_o they_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n as_o imperfect_a this_o make_v they_o to_o make_v their_o faith_n legal_a the_o six_o lesson_n six_o another_o lesson_n that_o believer_n be_v to_o learn_v from_o the_o rest_n that_o they_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o if_o they_o find_v any_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o terror_n that_o come_v by_o the_o law_n certain_o than_o they_o need_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o all_o the_o terror_n that_o possible_o can_v come_v from_o any_o creature_n from_o any_o man_n if_o thy_o faith_n can_v deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o give_v rest_n to_o thy_o soul_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o terrible_a thing_n in_o the_o law_n threaten_v against_o thy_o sin_n than_o thy_o faith_n may_v deliver_v thou_o much_o more_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o man_n for_o take_v all_o the_o rage_n and_o power_n of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o devil_n in_o hell_n they_o be_v not_o so_o terrible_a as_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n now_o if_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o such_o a_o grace_n into_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o by_o that_o come_v to_o know_v a_o way_n to_o deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o give_v rest_n unto_o thy_o soul_n from_o that_o than_o thou_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o all_o terror_n from_o wicked_a man_n do_v but_o set_v that_o grace_n of_o thy_o a_o work_n set_v it_o in_o exercise_n upon_o such_o promise_n as_o have_v give_v thou_o rest_n from_o the_o law_n and_o this_o will_v that_o give_v i_o rest_n from_o they_o and_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o all_o the_o terror_n of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o devil_n in_o hell_n can_v be_v more_o terrible_a than_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o as_o thou_o have_v make_v use_n of_o thy_o faith_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n to_o get_v rest_n from_o those_o terror_n in_o the_o like_a manner_n put_v forth_o thy_o faith_n when_o thou_o hear_v the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o deliver_v thy_o soul_n from_o they_o let_v there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o rumour_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o thou_o may_v say_v my_o soul_n return_v unto_o thy_o rest_n the_o seven_o lesson_n seven_o another_o lesson_n that_o believer_n be_v to_o learn_v from_o their_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n which_o be_v of_o marvellous_a use_n to_o they_o in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v this_o that_o certain_o it_o be_v the_o most_o unbecoming_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o see_v a_o believer_n to_o be_v rigorous_a towards_o his_o brethren_n christ_n have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o rigour_n then_o will_v thou_o be_v rigorous_a christ_n have_v give_v thou_o rest_n will_v not_o thou_o do_v what_o thou_o can_v to_o give_v thy_o brother_n rest_n too_o if_o christ_n have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o great_a trouble_n burden_n and_o bondage_n that_o thou_o be_v under_o why_o shall_v thou_o not_o endeavour_v with_o all_o thy_o might_n to_o deliver_v thy_o brother_n from_o burden_n trouble_n any_o thing_n that_o may_v grieve_v thy_o brother_n oh_o what_o a_o unworthy_a thing_n be_v it_o that_o a_o christian_n that_o have_v receive_v so_o much_o rest_n from_o christ_n yet_o shall_v be_v a_o troublesome_a man_n or_o woman_n to_o his_o brother_n or_o sister_n christ_n do_v therefore_o give_v rest_n to_o thou_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v of_o a_o quiet_a disposition_n towards_o other_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v pitiful_a towards_o other_o to_o see_v one_o that_o profess_v to_o have_v deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n and_o to_o have_v rest_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v rigorous_a to_o those_o under_o he_o rigorous_a to_o his_o servant_n rigorous_a to_o his_o child_n it_o be_v miserable_a remember_v what_o rigour_n christ_n have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o and_o remember_v to_o be_v quiet_a spirit_v to_o thy_o brother_n hence_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o word_n to_o my_o text_n learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n i_o will_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o you_o may_v be_v from_o the_o law_n many_o other_o thing_n may_v be_v raise_v but_o because_o they_o be_v but_o consequence_n of_o what_o have_v be_v deliver_v i_o resolve_v not_o to_o be_v large_a upon_o they_o chap._n 33._o of_o the_o rest_n from_o legal_a performance_n and_o the_o several_a way_n how_o this_o rest_n come_v from_o christ_n viz._n duty_n be_v delightful_a to_o the_o soul_n because_o christ_n render_v god_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o a_o gracious_a way_n 2._o they_o be_v not_o perform_v as_o satisfactory_a but_o as_o testimony_n of_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n 3_o christ_n himself_o offer_v up_o the_o duty_n to_o god_n 4._o they_o be_v perform_v from_o the_o law_n in_o the_o heart_n 5._o they_o have_v the_o promise_v join_v with_o they_o now_o to_o make_v some_o entrance_n into_o the_o next_o thing_n which_o have_v great_a affinity_n to_o the_o other_o and_o that_o be_v the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n that_o there_o be_v in_o many_o in_o regard_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o you_o know_v i_o open_v at_o large_a the_o great_a burden_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o many_o people_n who_o have_v convince_v conscience_n and_o there_o conscience_n pull_v and_o hale_v they_o to_o duty_n and_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o perform_v duty_n but_o when_o they_o do_v their_o duty_n their_o very_a duty_n be_v a_o burden_n to_o they_o for_o they_o do_v they_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n there_o be_v many_o i_o know_v that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o subject_n but_o that_o there_o be_v divers_a that_o know_v what_o i_o mean_v though_o other_o know_v not_o to_o be_v under_o so_o much_o power_n of_o conscience_n as_o not_o to_o dare_v to_o omit_v a_o duty_n though_o the_o duty_n be_v burdensome_a to_o they_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v not_o under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n but_o though_o conscience_n require_v they_o to_o do_v such_o a_o duty_n they_o dare_v omit_v the_o duty_n and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v at_o it_o but_o but_o there_o be_v other_o who_o have_v not_o feel_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o set_v their_o soul_n at_o liberty_n they_o be_v under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o do_v what_o conscience_n require_v and_o yet_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o duty_n that_o they_o have_v perform_v have_v be_v girevous_a burden_n they_o they_o have_v go_v under_o the_o command_n of_o their_o conscience_n as_o under_o a_o grievous_a burden_n now_o to_o these_o christ_n speak_v come_z ro_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n in_o the_o believe_a in_o christ_n in_o the_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o christ_n there_o be_v deliverance_n from_o this_o burden_n and_o many_o poor_a soul_n that_o for_o many_o year_n have_v go_v on_o under_o this_o burden_n who_o the_o lord_n have_v open_v to_o they_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n their_o heart_n
have_v be_v at_o liberty_n so_o as_o they_o have_v be_v as_o conscientious_a in_o perform_v of_o duty_n as_o before_o but_o now_o their_o duty_n be_v make_v the_o joy_n and_o delight_n of_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v go_v to_o they_o with_o rejoice_v and_o make_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o be_v their_o inheritance_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o their_o duty_n be_v as_o sweet_a to_o they_o as_o the_o honey_n and_o the_o honey_n comb_n now_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n that_o we_o be_v upon_o that_o in_o christ_n there_o be_v rest_n from_o this_o burden_n christ_n give_v ability_n unto_o believer_n those_o that_o be_v his_o member_n to_o perform_v duty_n with_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n and_o indeed_o evangelical_a duty_n be_v duty_n perform_v with_o freedom_n that_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o legal_a performance_n and_o evangelical_a one_o be_v do_v as_o a_o burden_n and_o the_o other_o be_v do_v with_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n now_o i_o shall_v show_v unto_o you_o how_o christ_n give_v this_o freedom_n where_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v there_o be_v liberty_n you_o know_v the_o scripture_n i_o suppose_v now_o this_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n come_v by_o christ_n these_o way_n first_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v come_v to_o christ_n it_o have_v rest_n because_o christ_n render_v god_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o a_o gracious_a way_n christ_n take_v off_o the_o terror_n that_o be_v before_o of_o god_n take_v off_o that_o from_o the_o heart_n the_o reason_n why_o duty_n be_v perform_v as_o a_o burden_n to_o those_o that_o be_v legal_a be_v this_o because_o they_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n but_o so_o as_o they_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n they_o must_v do_v what_o god_n require_v i_o but_o when_o they_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n they_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n as_o a_o judge_n be_v very_o terrible_a now_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o christ_n christ_n render_v god_n very_o amiable_a and_o loâ—ely_o unto_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o christian_a render_v god_n the_o father_n as_o his_o father_n or_o her_o father_n for_o so_o christ_n say_v i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n not_o only_o as_o a_o father_n but_o our_o father_n as_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n so_o believer_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o father_n in_o a_o double_a relation_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v beget_v i_o a_o new_a to_o himself_o and_o so_o he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v adopt_v i_o to_o be_v his_o child_n but_o he_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n too_o and_o christ_n be_v i_o two_o so_o that_o i_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o fatherhood_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o the_o father_n of_o christ_n i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n so_o when_o believer_n come_v to_o tender_v up_o any_o service_n to_o god_n as_o a_o duty_n they_o come_v to_o god_n as_o their_o father_n and_o as_o to_o the_o father_n of_o their_o redeemer_n too_o now_o this_o bring_v a_o mighty_a deal_n of_o ease_n unto_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o a_o father_n call_v the_o child_n to_o he_o and_o a_o rigid_a severe_a master_n or_o judge_v call_v of_o one_o to_o he_o when_o the_o child_n hear_v that_o his_o father_n call_v he_o he_o run_v and_o love_v to_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n but_o when_o one_o say_v to_o a_o servant_n your_o master_n call_v you_o he_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o be_v call_v to_o be_v beat_v with_o stripe_n or_o no._n this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o legal_a performance_n and_o evangelical_a those_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n when_o christ_n call_v they_o to_o duty_n you_o must_v go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o your_o father_n and_o of_o the_o father_n of_o your_o bless_a redeemer_n you_o must_v go_v to_o duty_n in_o he_o come_v go_v to_o prayer_n say_v conscience_n to_o one_o they_o can_v but_o go_v indeed_o but_o when_o they_o go_v to_o prayer_n their_o heart_n be_v strike_v with_o fear_n terror_n and_o discouragement_n in_o prayer_n but_o conscience_n say_v to_o one_o that_o be_v a_o believer_n come_v you_o must_v go_v to_o prayer_n what_o be_v that_o but_o come_v you_o must_v go_v before_o your_o father_n and_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o your_o father_n the_o father_n of_o your_o redeemer_n call_v you_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o &_o how_o do_v your_o heart_n spring_n to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o such_o a_o father_n so_o that_o christ_n render_v they_o lovely_a to_o his_o father_n and_o so_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o burden_n that_o they_o be_v under_o in_o legal_a performance_n second_o in_o christ_n believer_n when_o they_o perform_v duty_n they_o do_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o unto_o god_n as_o satisfactory_a for_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v past_a but_o mere_o to_o be_v testimony_n of_o their_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n for_o what_o they_o have_v receive_v now_o duty_n be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_o do_v this_o way_n then_o another_o it_o be_v true_a they_o will_v gather_v argument_n from_o their_o former_a neglect_n to_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o do_v the_o more_o i_o but_o now_o they_o be_v not_o call_v upon_o to_o their_o duty_n to_o make_v god_n amends_o and_o satisfy_v for_o what_o be_v pass_v for_o that_o will_v be_v a_o burden_n for_o such_o as_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o satisfy_v god_n but_o only_o by_o do_v so_o much_o the_o more_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o they_o have_v neglect_v heretofore_o i_o have_v neglect_v god_n all_o the_o time_n of_o my_o youth_n and_o now_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v awake_v and_o tell_v i_o i_o must_v serve_v god_n and_o perform_v duty_n and_o i_o have_v need_n be_v more_o diligent_a now_o that_o i_o may_v make_v up_o and_o satisfy_v for_o what_o i_o have_v neglect_v before_o now_o when_o we_o perform_v duty_n in_o this_o way_n they_o be_v very_o burdensome_a as_o suppose_v a_o man_n have_v run_v in_o debt_n and_o he_o be_v set_v up_o in_o a_o trade_n i_o but_o whatsoever_o he_o get_v it_o must_v be_v to_o satisfy_v what_o debt_n he_o be_v run_v out_o in_o before_o this_o must_v make_v he_o go_v on_o in_o much_o heaviness_n he_o think_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o get_v must_v go_v to_o satisfy_v what_o he_o have_v run_v into_o before_o but_o now_o take_v another_o man_n that_o have_v run_v into_o arrearage_n and_o have_v a_o friend_n a_o kinsman_n that_o come_v and_o lay_v down_o all_o the_o debt_n that_o he_o owe_v and_o give_v he_o a_o stock_n &_o say_v now_o you_o be_v a_o freeman_n once_o again_o go_v on_o &_o whatever_o you_o get_v shall_v be_v for_o yourself_o this_o man_n go_v on_o a_o great_a dealemore_n lively_a than_o the_o other_o just_o thus_o it_o be_v between_o the_o conscience_n of_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n one_o that_o be_v legal_a conscience_n tell_v he_o of_o such_o arrearage_n that_o he_o have_v run_v into_o with_o god_n and_o whatever_o he_o can_v do_v for_o time_n to_o come_v be_v too_o little_a to_o satisfy_v for_o what_o he_o have_v neglect_v before_o now_o conscience_n put_v he_o upon_o it_o do_v he_o must_v serve_v he_o must_v obey_v he_o must_v i_o but_o he_o do_v it_o with_o no_o heart_n at_o all_o i_o work_v and_o i_o obey_v &_o i_o do_v but_o whether_o this_o will_v make_v up_o the_o arrearage_n for_o what_o be_v past_a i_o do_v not_o know_v now_o a_o believer_n perform_v obedience_n but_o it_o be_v upon_o other_o term_n christ_n come_v and_o lay_v down_o a_o price_n and_o discharge_v he_o of_o all_o former_a arrearage_n and_o put_v a_o stock_n of_o grace_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o he_o now_o live_v and_o employ_v this_o your_o stock_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o trade_n with_o it_o get_v more_o comfort_n and_o more_o grace_n with_o it_o and_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o benefit_n and_o the_o good_a of_o every_o holy_a duty_n that_o you_o perform_v the_o good_a and_o benefit_n shall_v come_v to_o your_o soul_n now_o such_o a_o soul_n go_v unto_o duty_n in_o a_o cheerful_a way_n and_o they_o be_v no_o burden_n at_o all_o to_o it_o because_o he_o perform_v they_o not_o for_o satisfaction_n of_o any_o arrearage_n behind_o
poor_a trouble_a soul_n who_o conscience_n pull_v they_o on_o to_o duty_n but_o why_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o because_o conscience_n accuse_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o they_o know_v what_o need_n they_o have_v of_o god_n mercy_n they_o stand_v guilty_a before_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o perform_v duty_n that_o they_o may_v get_v a_o pardon_n and_o they_o know_v that_o they_o be_v over_o now_o then_o that_o that_o be_v require_v of_o thou_o be_v only_o as_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o as_o a_o fruit_n of_o thy_o safe_a condition_n that_o thou_o be_v man_n that_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o his_o life_n stand_v before_o the_o judge_n and_o there_o be_v no_o way_n for_o pardon_n for_o he_o but_o he_o have_v his_o book_n give_v to_o he_o as_o you_o know_v the_o way_n be_v to_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o clergy_n as_o we_o use_v to_o call_v it_o now_o when_o he_o know_v if_o he_o read_v he_o shall_v have_v his_o life_n but_o life_n lie_v upon_o it_o and_o the_o judge_n be_v strict_a and_o set_v one_o by_o he_o that_o the_o ordinary_a shall_v not_o prompt_v he_o and_o he_o will_v have_v he_o read_v out_o and_o his_o life_n lie_v upon_o it_o i_o suppose_v you_o have_v hear_v of_o some_o that_o be_v able_a scholar_n and_o able_a to_o read_v well_o enough_o at_o other_o time_n yet_o at_o such_o a_o time_n be_v not_o able_a to_o read_v one_o word_n for_o a_o world_n but_o suppose_v this_o man_n now_o have_v his_o pardon_n and_o you_o then_o put_v he_o to_o read_v than_o he_o can_v read_v with_o delight_n he_o have_v freedom_n enough_o now_o to_o read_v his_o eye_n that_o be_v bind_v before_o be_v loosen_a now_o suppose_v he_o be_v to_o read_v a_o psalm_n of_o mercy_n before_o he_o have_v his_o pardon_n and_o when_o he_o have_v his_o pardon_n there_o be_v a_o psalm_n of_o thankfulness_n for_o his_o life_n give_v he_o to_o read_v he_o can_v read_v it_o then_o with_o delight_n just_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o stand_v before_o god_n as_o their_o judge_n and_o look_v upon_o what_o they_o perform_v as_o that_o which_o their_o soul_n depend_v upon_o that_o if_o i_o do_v not_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v command_v i_o my_o soul_n lie_v upon_o it_o alas_o this_o straiten_n the_o heart_n and_o it_o be_v put_v into_o a_o condition_n of_o fear_n but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v come_v to_o christ_n and_o the_o lord_n have_v grant_v pardon_n to_o it_o and_o have_v quiet_v it_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n now_o say_v god_n read_v perform_v duty_n and_o let_v all_o the_o duty_n you_o perform_v be_v in_o way_n of_o blessing_n my_o name_n and_o praise_v of_o i_o for_o give_v of_o you_o your_o life_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a ground_n of_o all_o that_o god_n require_v of_o such_o as_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n mere_o that_o thou_o shall_v go_v out_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n for_o pardon_v thy_o sin_n and_o accept_v of_o thou_o in_o his_o son_n and_o so_o likewise_o if_o so_o be_v a_o man_n be_v among_o his_o enemy_n and_o shall_v be_v set_v to_o do_v some_o work_n and_o business_n and_o be_v set_v so_o to_o it_o that_o if_o he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o he_o be_v a_o dead_a man_n they_o will_v have_v his_o life_n if_o he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o alas_o he_o go_v about_o it_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o dread_n and_o fear_n but_o now_o if_o this_o man_n shall_v come_v home_o to_o his_o father_n house_n and_o his_o father_n set_v he_o about_o a_o work_n and_o he_o do_v it_o so_o that_o though_o he_o will_v not_o do_v the_o work_n yet_o he_o shall_v not_o loose_v his_o life_n he_o shall_v go_v about_o it_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o believer_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n they_o come_v to_o their_o father_n house_n and_o their_o father_n set_v they_o about_o work_n but_o so_o spirit_n in_o christ_n to_o come_v to_o some_o kind_n of_o proportionableness_n to_o what_o the_o law_n of_o god_n require_v of_o they_o it_o be_v true_a set_v a_o poor_a weak_a man_n a_o sick_a man_n about_o any_o hard_a work_n and_o oh_o how_o tedious_a be_v it_o unto_o he_o for_o a_o sick_a man_n to_o go_v and_o carry_v such_o a_o burden_n or_o to_o do_v such_o a_o hard_a work_n it_o be_v very_o irksome_a unto_o he_o but_o now_o when_o this_o man_n come_v to_o be_v healthy_a and_o strong_a to_o have_v his_o vein_n full_a of_o blood_n and_o his_o artery_n full_a of_o spirit_n now_o he_o go_v along_o in_o his_o work_n and_o account_v it_o no_o burden_n at_o all_o because_o he_o have_v get_v strength_n in_o he_o so_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n they_o be_v hard_a to_o those_o that_o
