verse_n 1._o say_v you_o unto_o your_o brother_n ammi_n and_o to_o your_o sister_n ruhamah_n 2._o plead_v with_o your_o mother_n plead_v for_o she_o be_v not_o my_o wife_n neither_o be_o i_o her_o husband_n let_v she_o therefore_o put_v away_o her_o whoredom_n out_o of_o her_o sight_n and_o her_o adultery_n from_o between_o her_o breast_n in_o this_o chapter_n we_o have_v a_o enlargement_n for_o he_o and_o these_o to_o who_o he_o will_v be_v good_a however_o it_o go_v with_o the_o body_n of_o the_o church_n for_o so_o be_v import_v here_o there_o be_v brethren_n and_o sister_n to_o plead_v which_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v to_o be_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o gospel_n chap._n 1.10_o 11._o as_o if_o they_o be_v bring_v in_o by_o the_o lord_n to_o shame_v present_a israel_n from_o her_o whoredom_n nor_o yet_o of_o judah_n call_v unto_o to_o plead_v with_o israel_n for_o the_o present_a church_n of_o israel_n can_v not_o be_v call_v a_o mother_n to_o either_o of_o these_o but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v take_v of_o a_o remnant_n among_o themselves_o at_o that_o same_o time_n see_v 1_o king_n 19.18_o 2._o the_o great_a privilege_n of_o the_o true_o godly_a be_v that_o the_o privilege_n offer_v to_o the_o visible_a church_n be_v insure_v to_o they_o even_o when_o she_o be_v reject_v and_o in_o particular_a that_o they_o have_v interest_n in_o god_n as_o his_o peculiar_a people_n which_o as_o it_o flow_v from_o god_n free_a mercy_n allanerly_a so_o it_o prove_v the_o fountain_n of_o much_o mercy_n and_o tender_a deal_n towards_o they_o so_o much_o may_v be_v gather_v from_o their_o name_n ammi_n or_o my_o people_n and_o ruhamah_n or_o have_v obtain_v mercy_n which_o name_n be_v give_v to_o they_o when_o the_o body_n of_o the_o people_n be_v for_o present_a or_o short_o to_o be_v lo-ammi_a and_o lo-ruhamah_a chap._n 1.6_o 9_o yet_o it_o will_v be_v consider_v that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o look_v on_o these_o name_n as_o to_o be_v give_v one_o to_o the_o brethren_n the_o other_o to_o the_o sister_n only_o but_o both_o of_o they_o as_o common_a to_o both_o though_o because_o of_o the_o original_a construction_n they_o be_v thus_o distribute_v 3._o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o godly_a to_o be_v much_o in_o cherish_v mutual_a love_n among_o themselves_o especial_o in_o time_n of_o general_a defection_n and_o of_o approach_a calamity_n therefore_o be_v they_o design_v as_o brethren_n and_o sister_n one_o to_o another_o 4._o it_o be_v the_o commendation_n of_o the_o true_o godly_a in_o a_o ill_a time_n to_o be_v careful_a of_o other_o and_o of_o the_o public_a good_a and_o when_o their_o sense_n of_o their_o great_a privilege_n and_o of_o godstend_a mercy_n towards_o they_o make_v they_o compassionate_a and_o active_a for_o the_o public_a weal_n of_o the_o church_n in_o their_o station_n so_o much_o be_v import_v in_o the_o charge_n lay_v on_o ammi_n and_o ruhamah_n in_o reference_n to_o their_o mother-church_n 5._o whatever_o be_v the_o activity_n of_o the_o godly_a in_o their_o duty_n yet_o
in_o this_o also_o do_v the_o resemblance_n hold_v in_o the_o former_a and_o latter_a rain_n 5._o albeit_o the_o lord_n see_v it_o fit_v ofttimes_o to_o delay_n and_o suspend_v the_o manifestation_n of_o himself_o yet_o it_o be_v his_o people_n duty_n not_o to_o weary_v but_o they_o ought_v to_o testify_v their_o estimation_n thereof_o by_o their_o eagerness_n and_o unwearied_a patience_n in_o expect_v it_o for_o to_o this_o end_n also_o be_v this_o similitude_n make_v use_v of_o in_o scripture_n that_o as_o man_n wait_v for_o this_o rain_n with_o great_a earnestness_n as_o be_v of_o singular_a use_n job_n 29.23_o and_o as_o the_o husbandman_n patient_o wait_v for_o it_o that_o he_o may_v at_o last_o have_v a_o fruitful_a harvest_n to_o recompense_v his_o labour_n so_o shall_v the_o lord_n people_n earnest_o and_o yet_o patient_o wait_v for_o he_o as_o know_v that_o his_o come_n will_v make_v up_o all_o jam._n 5.7_o 8._o ver._n 4._o o_o ephraim_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o o_o judah_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o for_o your_o goodness_n be_v as_o a_o morning_n cloud_n and_o as_o the_o early_a dew_n which_o go_v away_o follow_v the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o chap._n wherein_o after_o this_o sweet_a digression_n foretell_v their_o future_a repentance_n the_o lord_n return_v to_o his_o former_a challenge_n against_o these_o two_o kingdom_n and_o clear_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o destruction_n that_o be_v to_o come_v upon_o they_o before_o these_o joyful_a day_n so_o that_o this_o purpose_n do_v not_o come_v in_o by_o way_n of_o exception_n against_o their_o repentance_n former_o describe_v as_o unsound_a for_o that_o contain_v a_o pattern_n of_o true_a repentance_n and_o of_o what_o they_o will_v do_v at_o their_o last_o conversion_n but_o the_o dependence_n may_v be_v conceive_v thus_o that_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n the_o lord_n have_v comfort_v the_o true_o godly_a by_o this_o prediction_n he_o now_o turn_v himself_o to_o the_o body_n of_o the_o people_n and_o his_o affection_n if_o we_o may_v speak_v of_o he_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n be_v kindle_v with_o the_o thought_n of_o that_o sweet_a time_n of_o love_n that_o be_v to_o be_v betwixt_o israel_n and_o he_o he_o expostulate_v with_o they_o that_o they_o be_v nothing_o like_o this_o pattern_n here_o prescribe_v and_o that_o themselves_o be_v judges_n he_o can_v do_v no_o other_o than_o destroy_v they_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n whereas_o they_o may_v object_v how_o can_v he_o destroy_v they_o towards_o who_o he_o have_v such_o a_o purpose_n and_o they_o be_v still_o ready_a to_o accuse_v his_o rigour_n and_o severity_n towards_o they_o therefore_o he_o put_v they_o to_o instruct_v any_o cause_n they_o can_v wherefore_o he_o shall_v deal_v otherwise_o with_o they_o we_o may_v take_v up_o the_o purpose_n in_o these_o 1._o a_o assertion_n that_o he_o be_v not_o to_o blame_v for_o their_o destruction_n but_o their_o own_o condition_n which_o be_v so_o deplorable_o desperate_a that_o he_o propound_v the_o matter_n to_o themselves_o to_o show_v upon_o what_o ground_n he_o can_v do_v otherwise_o with_o they_o than_o he_o do_v consider_v their_o way_n 2._o some_o confirmation_n of_o this_o assertion_n whereof_o the_o first_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o this_o v._o prevent_v a_o objection_n take_v from_o their_o seem_a goodness_n at_o some_o time_n as_o we_o find_v several_a reformation_n in_o judah_n and_o in_o israel_n we_o have_v ahab'_v humiliation_n jehu_n zeal_n and_o other_o of_o their_o king_n not_o so_o bad_a as_o the_o rest_n of_o they_o 2_o king_n 17.2_o concern_v this_o the_o lord_n declare_v that_o whatever_o real_a good_a be_v in_o some_o person_n yet_o any_o work_n of_o repentance_n or_o reformation_n the_o body_n of_o the_o people_n attain_v to_o be_v empty_a and_o in_o constant_a and_o can_v no_o more_o endure_v nor_o abide_v the_o touchstone_n than_o the_o morning-cloud_n and_o dew_n can_v endure_v the_o rise_a sun_n and_o therefore_o this_o can_v not_o hinder_v but_o rather_o hasten_v their_o destruction_n doct._n 1._o when_o the_o lord_n proceed_v in_o severity_n against_o his_o people_n he_o be_v not_o to_o be_v look_v on_o as_o one_o who_o take_v pleasure_n in_o such_o a_o way_n or_o who_o delight_v in_o it_o if_o their_o condition_n do_v not_o unavoidable_o call_v for_o it_o for_o so_o much_o do_v this_o expostulation_n wherein_o he_o put_v on_o the_o affection_n of_o a_o perplex_a creature_n teach_v we_o see_v hos_n 11.8_o 2._o the_o disposition_n and_o way_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n be_v ofttimes_o so_o desperate_a that_o no_o dispensation_n will_v better_v they_o and_o however_o the_o lord_n take_v no_o pleasure_n in_o their_o destruction_n and_o their_o privilege_n seem_v to_o call_v for_o another_o lot_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n but_o their_o carriage_n draw_v it_o on_o for_o o_o ephraim_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o etc._n etc._n import_v that_o he_o have_v assay_v all_o other_o mean_n but_o in_o vain_a and_o that_o now_o he_o can_v do_v no_o otherwise_o with_o they_o see_v mat._n 11.16_o 17._o isa_n 5.4_o jer._n 9.7_o ezek_n 5.13_o with_o 6.9_o and._n 24.13_o 3._o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o lord_n people_n may_v plead_v for_o god_n proceed_v in_o great_a severity_n if_o they_o be_v awake_v and_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n to_o justify_v he_o in_o judge_v and_o for_o this_o end_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o their_o desperate_a incorrigibleness_n for_o this_o question_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o do_v not_o import_v any_o ignorance_n and_o perplexity_n in_o god_n but_o put_v the_o matter_n to_o their_o own_o conscience_n which_o be_v well_o inform_v as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v will_v justify_v he_o in_o his_o great_a severity_n 4._o as_o ofttimes_o a_o people_n enjoy_v pure_a worship_n may_v be_v as_o ripe_a for_o judgement_n and_o in_o as_o desperate_a a_o condition_n as_o they_o who_o have_v make_v foul_a visible_a defection_n so_o the_o universal_a overspread_n of_o sin_n contribute_v to_o make_v a_o people_n case_n more_o irremediable_a therefore_o be_v judah_n put_v to_o it_o with_o ephraim_n who_o yet_o seem_v to_o be_v far_o better_a than_o they_o and_o this_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o their_o desperate_a case_n 5._o a_o people_n may_v have_v some_o show_n of_o goodness_n at_o least_o at_o some_o time_n who_o yet_o be_v little_a the_o better_a and_o their_o condition_n nothing_o the_o less_o desperate_a for_o so_o it_o be_v suppose_v this_o people_n have_v your_o goodness_n which_o comprehend_v any_o show_n of_o piety_n towards_o god_n or_o of_o goodness_n bounty_n and_o mercy_n towards_o man_n which_o they_o have_v at_o any_o time_n 6._o man_n goodness_n when_o it_o be_v only_o in_o show_n and_o not_o in_o reality_n prove_v ordinary_o a_o great_a snare_n and_o neck-break_a to_o they_o as_o hide_v the_o sight_n of_o their_o deserve_n from_o they_o be_v a_o ground_n of_o exceptation_n against_o challenge_n and_o of_o swell_v against_o correction_n therefore_o must_v the_o lord_n here_o take_v off_o this_o objection_n and_o clear_v what_o their_o goodness_n be_v 7._o whatever_o goodness_n man_n seem_v to_o have_v yet_o it_o will_v not_o avail_v to_o exempt_v they_o when_o either_o it_o be_v but_o empty_a and_o want_v a_o firm_a root_n or_o proclaim_v its_o own_o unsoundnesse_n by_o its_o inconstancy_n and_o be_v but_o at_o fit_n for_o so_o much_o do_v this_o comparison_n teach_v we_o your_o goodness_n be_v as_o a_o morning_n cloud_n and_o as_o the_o early_a dew_n it_o go_v away_o whatever_o use_n may_v be_v make_v of_o these_o similitude_n elsewhere_o to_o point_v out_o what_o be_v real_o good_a yet_o in_o this_o place_n they_o point_v at_o the_o emptiness_n of_o their_o goodness_n as_o a_o cloud_n that_o have_v no_o rain_n in_o it_o and_o the_o dew_n that_o enter_v not_o into_o the_o ground_n to_o moisten_v it_o and_o at_o its_o inconstancy_n and_o evanish_v ver._n 5._o therefore_o have_v i_o hew_v they_o by_o the_o prophet_n i_o have_v slay_v they_o by_o the_o word_n of_o my_o mouth_n and_o thy_o judgement_n be_v as_o the_o light_n that_o go_v forth_o 6._o for_o i_o desire_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n more_o than_o burnt-offering_n 7._o but_o they_o like_o man_n etc._n see_v tit._n 1.12_o 13._o 4._o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v of_o such_o efficacy_n that_o it_o will_v either_o cure_v and_o rectify_v a_o people_n or_o else_o undo_v they_o so_o church_n and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n god_n will_v pour_v out_o all_o sort_n of_o calamity_n upon_o the_o visible_a church_n to_o punish_v they_o who_o contemn_v his_o rich_a offer_n and_o do_v not_o walk_v answerable_o to_o such_o dispensation_n and_o to_o try_v the_o grace_n of_o his_o own_o that_o they_o may_v aspire_v towards_o spiritual_a happiness_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o will_v great_a safety_n and_o where_o deliverance_n may_v most_o ready_o be_v expect_v of_o any_o and_o however_o it_o fare_v with_o particular_a person_n in_o time_n of_o commotion_n yet_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o jerusalem_n shall_v he_o deliverance_n and_o in_o the_o remnant_n where_o he_o name_v zion_n and_o jerusalem_n not_o only_o as_o a_o type_n of_o the_o church_n wherein_o safety_n be_v to_o be_v find_v and_o the_o remnant_n be_v to_o be_v preserve_v but_o to_o point_v out_o that_o of_o the_o jew_n belong_v to_o these_o place_n he_o will_v keep_v still_o a_o remnant_n rom._n 11.5_o till_o that_o day_n come_v whereof_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n 4._o god_n have_v pass_v his_o word_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o a_o remnant_n under_o trouble_n and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v
