because_o he_o fear_v the_o punishment_n of_o sacrilege_n if_o he_o shall_v lay_v hand_n on_o the_o son_n of_o god_n we_o must_v note_v that_o when_o he_o ask_v whence_o christ_n be_v he_o require_v not_o of_o his_o country_n but_o that_o this_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v be_v thou_o a_o man_n bear_v in_o the_o earth_n or_o some_o god_n therefore_o i_o expound_v this_o place_n thus_o that_o pilate_n be_v smite_v with_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o power_n and_o majesty_n of_o god_n be_v bring_v into_o a_o quandary_n for_o he_o see_v on_o the_o one_o side_n the_o tumult_n the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v which_o they_o mock_v at_o this_o day_n so_o contemptuous_o yea_o so_o reproachful_o it_o be_v a_o horrible_a thing_n to_o utter_v how_o proud_o and_o cruel_o the_o papist_n do_v condemn_v the_o plain_a and_o evident_a truth_n of_o god_n and_o how_o they_o shed_v innocent_a blood_n whence_o i_o pray_v you_o come_v such_o drunken_a dulness_n save_v only_o because_o they_o do_v not_o remember_v that_o they_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v with_o god_n 9_o but_o jesus_n give_v he_o no_o answer_n in_o that_o christ_n answer_v not_o it_o ought_v not_o to_o seem_v to_o be_v any_o absurd_a thing_n if_o sobeit_n we_o remember_v that_o which_o i_o say_v before_o that_o he_o stand_v not_o before_o pilate_n to_o plead_v his_o cause_n as_o person_n arreign_v be_v wont_a to_o do_v who_o be_v desiroure_n to_o be_v acquit_v but_o rather_o to_o suffer_v judgement_n for_o it_o be_v meet_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v conden_v see_v that_o he_o have_v take_v our_o person_n upon_o he_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o abstain_v from_o defend_v himself_o and_o yet_o christ_n silence_n disagree_v not_o with_o the_o say_n of_o paul_n 1._o tim._n 6._o 13._o where_o he_o say_v remember_v that_o christ_n under_o pontius_n pilate_n witness_v a_o good_a confession_n for_o he_o have_v defend_v the_o credit_n of_o the_o gospel_n so_o much_o as_o be_v sufficient_a neither_o be_v his_o death_n any_o thing_n else_o but_o a_o feeling_n of_o y_fw-es â—_o doctrine_n which_o he_o have_v teach_v therefore_o christ_n do_v not_o fail_v to_o make_v a_o lawful_a confession_n but_o he_o hold_v his_o peace_n when_o he_o be_v to_o crave_v that_o he_o may_v be_v acquit_v moreover_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v lest_o pilate_n shall_v acquit_v jesus_n as_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n be_v set_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o also_o which_o luke_n write_v that_o he_o be_v carry_v far_o in_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n do_v rather_o belong_v to_o a_o vision_n yet_o in_o a_o doubtful_a matter_n &_o which_o without_o danger_n a_o man_n may_v be_v ignorant_a of_o i_o have_v rather_o suspend_v my_o judgement_n then_o geve_v the_o contentious_a occasion_n of_o quarrel_v also_o it_o may_v be_v that_o the_o 2._o temptation_n do_v not_o present_o without_o distance_n of_o time_n follow_v the_o first_o nor_o the_o three_o the_o second_o but_o it_o be_v more_o probable_a that_o there_o be_v some_o distance_n though_o by_o the_o word_n of_o luke_n it_o be_v gather_v that_o there_o be_v no_o long_a space_n between_o for_o temptation_n which_o be_v to_o be_v learn_v by_o the_o answer_n of_o christ_n as_o i_o say_v a_o little_a before_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v mete_v with_o the_o subtletye_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o beat_v back_o his_o force_n hold_v out_o for_o a_o buckler_n god_n be_v not_o to_o be_v tempt_v whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o deceit_n of_o the_o enemy_n tend_v to_o this_o purpose_n that_o he_o liftinge_v himself_o uppe_o above_o measure_n shall_v rash_o rise_v uppe_o against_o god_n first_o sathan_n try_v to_o draw_v christ_n to_o desperation_n because_o he_o want_v meat_n and_o
