as_o that_o you_o examine_v they_o by_o the_o law_n and_o by_o the_o testimony_n and_o if_o they_o speak_v not_o according_a to_o this_o word_n sure_o they_o have_v no_o knowledge_n but_o be_v blind_a leader_n of_o they_o and_o so_o account_v of_o they_o thus_o then_o both_o by_o the_o commendable_a example_n of_o the_o man_n of_o berea_n and_o by_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o apostle_n john_n and_o our_o apostle_n and_o by_o the_o sharp_a reproof_n of_o the_o galathian_o and_o by_o the_o warrant_n of_o the_o prophet_n it_o do_v and_o may_v appear_v that_o even_o all_o the_o faithful_a child_n of_o god_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o try_v and_o judge_v by_o the_o scripture_n whether_o their_o teacher_n doctrine_n be_v true_a and_o so_o to_o reject_v whatsoever_o they_o find_v not_o agreeable_a book_n and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o so_o profit_n we_o take_v they_o from_o the_o school_n and_o set_v they_o to_o some_o other_o thing_n so_o that_o by_o our_o own_o judgement_n so_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n we_o shall_v increase_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o as_o we_o spend_v more_o and_o more_o time_n in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n so_o shall_v we_o abound_v more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o if_o we_o do_v not_o so_o by_o our_o own_o judgement_n we_o be_v to_o be_v exclude_v as_o non_fw-la captive_a simple_a woman_n lade_v with_o sin_n and_o lead_v with_o diverse_a lust_n have_v we_o not_o now_o many_o every_o where_o which_o compass_n sea_n and_o land_n to_o make_v one_o of_o their_o profession_n 23.15_o math._n 23.15_o so_o to_o make_v he_o twofold_a more_o the_o child_n of_o hell_n than_o they_o themselves_o be_v have_v we_o not_o now_o many_o every_o where_n by_o who_o the_o be_v call_v the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n for_o this_o show_v that_o the_o very_a matter_n and_o substance_n of_o good_a work_n be_v those_o good_a action_n which_o as_o good_a fruit_n grow_v and_o spring_v out_o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o us._n the_o formal_a cause_n or_o reason_n which_o cause_v our_o work_n to_o be_v good_a work_n be_v hereby_o likewise_o know_v that_o they_o be_v call_v the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n for_o this_o show_v that_o the_o reason_n why_o our_o work_n be_v good_a work_n be_v because_o of_o their_o conformity_n unto_o the_o law_n of_o god_n because_o they_o be_v do_v in_o righteousness_n according_a to_o the_o righteous_a law_n of_o god_n the_o efficient_a cause_n or_o author_n from_o who_o good_a work_n be_v be_v hereby_o know_v that_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v by_o jesus_n christ_n for_o this_o show_v that_o jesus_n christ_n work_v in_o we_o whatsoever_o work_n be_v good_a &_o agreeable_a to_o the_o righteous_a hence_o be_v that_o we_o be_v not_o only_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a and_o to_o work_v the_o work_n of_o righteousness_n but_o we_o be_v to_o abound_v in_o every_o good_a work_n to_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n to_o do_v good_a and_o to_o have_v our_o fruit_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n be_v a_o thing_n much_o urge_v and_o often_o command_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o it_o be_v so_o clear_a a_o case_n that_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v or_o shift_v but_o that_o we_o be_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a &_o to_o work_v the_o work_n of_o righteousness_n yet_o so_o cunning_a be_v we_o to_o deceive_v ourselves_o that_o if_o at_o sometime_o we_o have_v do_v some_o thing_n well_o we_o think_v we_o have_v obey_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n herein_o though_o we_o come_v far_o short_a of_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n the_o holy_a ghost_n therefore_o to_o meet_v with_o our_o foolish_a wisdom_n and_o to_o clear_v the_o point_n plain_o show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o as_o we_o be_v to_o show_v forth_o good_a work_n so_o we_o be_v to_o
he_o have_v a_o obadiah_n to_o hide_v and_o feed_v his_o prophet_n and_o in_o sinful_a sodom_n he_o have_v a_o righteous_a lot_n who_o soul_n be_v daily_o vex_v with_o their_o unlawful_a deed_n far_o be_v it_o therefore_o from_o we_o to_o condemn_v where_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o condemn_v who_o be_v his_o he_o only_o know_v but_o that_o in_o all_o place_n he_o have_v those_o that_o be_v he_o we_o be_v not_o to_o despair_v yea_o even_o at_o this_o day_n in_o caesar_n court_n and_o in_o sinful_a rome_n itself_o the_o three_o thing_n which_o i_o note_n be_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o many_o of_o the_o brethren_n in_o the_o lord_n be_v embolden_v through_o his_o band_n and_o dare_v more_o francke_o speak_v the_o word_n whereby_o he_o mean_v that_o through_o his_o constancy_n fruit_n and_o persecution_n of_o god_n saint_n namely_o the_o embolden_v of_o other_o to_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n more_o free_o which_o as_o it_o serve_v very_o notable_o for_o the_o proof_n of_o the_o main_a point_n that_o the_o persecution_n of_o god_n saint_n rather_o further_v than_o hinder_v the_o gospel_n so_o may_v it_o be_v a_o strong_a consolation_n for_o the_o child_n of_o god_n against_o the_o time_n of_o persecution_n it_o may_v be_v that_o some_o of_o we_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v doubt_v how_o we_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o time_n of_o persecution_n and_o fear_v that_o when_o the_o trial_n shall_v come_v we_o shall_v not_o quit_v ourselves_o like_o man_n but_o let_v we_o pluck_v up_o our_o heart_n and_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n when_o we_o shall_v see_v the_o constancy_n of_o other_o of_o god_n saint_n in_o their_o suffering_n then_o shall_v we_o also_o be_v embolden_v free_o to_o profess_v the_o truth_n of_o christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n shall_v turn_v the_o constancy_n of_o they_o in_o their_o suffering_n for_o the_o hope_n of_o their_o profession_n unto_o our_o encourage_n and_o embolden_v to_o make_v a_o good_a profession_n thus_o we_o find_v it_o to_o be_v in_o joseph_n of_o arimathea_n of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v 27.57_o mat._n 27.57_o that_o he_o have_v be_v the_o disciple_n of_o jesus_n before_o his_o passion_n but_o he_o show_v it_o not_o till_o then_o and_o then_o he_o go_v even_o to_o pilot_n himself_o and_o profess_v himself_o his_o disciple_n and_o beg_v his_o body_n and_o entomb_v it_o the_o like_a we_o find_v to_o be_v in_o nicodemus_n of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v 19.39_o joh._n 19.39_o that_o till_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n jesus_n he_o only_o come_v unto_o other_o of_o his_o child_n which_o neither_o themselves_o feel_v nor_o ever_o any_o see_v in_o they_o before_o let_v we_o not_o therefore_o fear_v how_o we_o shall_v stand_v when_o persecution_n come_v but_o let_v we_o depend_v on_o the_o lord_n who_o alone_o give_v strength_n and_o perseverance_n and_o he_o will_v strengthen_v we_o to_o stand_v lecture_n fourteen_o verse_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o with_o the_o apostle_n they_o may_v defend_v the_o gospel_n so_o that_o here_o be_v set_v down_o a_o distribution_n of_o such_o as_o preach_v christ_n according_a to_o the_o diversity_n of_o the_o mind_n wherewith_o of_o the_o motive_n whereupon_o and_o of_o the_o end_n wherefore_o they_o preach_v christ_n the_o distribution_n be_v this_o that_o some_o preach_v win_v the_o weak_a and_o gain_v they_o unto_o christ_n and_o both_o these_o march_v in_o their_o rank_n and_o fight_v well_o inasmuch_o as_o the_o weak_a faint_v not_o because_o he_o be_v weak_a nor_o he_o that_o be_v strong_a disdain_v not_o the_o weak_a because_o he_o be_v strong_a let_v no_o man_n therefore_o be_v discourage_v or_o faint_a because_o he_o be_v weak_a and_o unable_a to_o run_v with_o the_o foremost_a some_o in_o march_v forward_o must_v be_v before_o and_o some_o behind_o let_v not_o he_o that_o be_v behind_o faint_a but_o march_v forward_o let_v he_o march_v after_o the_o rule_n prescribe_v he_o by_o his_o general_n let_v his_o word_n be_v a_o lantern_n unto_o his_o foot_n and_o a_o light_n unto_o his_o path_n to_o direct_v his_o go_n in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o spirit_n but_o if_o thou_o walk_v forward_o in_o that_o weakness_n of_o thy_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v give_v thou_o by_o the_o rule_n which_o thy_o god_n have_v prescribe_v thou_o this_o shall_v bring_v thou_o peace_n at_o the_o last_o and_o guide_v thou_o unto_o the_o haven_n where_o thou_o will_v be_v let_v not_o thy_o heart_n therefore_o be_v trouble_v nor_o fear_v in_o what_o weakness_n soever_o it_o be_v that_o thou_o walk_v bless_v thy_o god_n that_o have_v set_v thou_o in_o the_o way_n and_o proceed_v as_o he_o give_v grace_n in_o the_o way_n example_n of_o such_o as_o he_o be_v that_o in_o he_o they_o may_v have_v a_o pattern_n to_o rectify_v their_o judgement_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o to_o follow_v after_o christian_a perfection_n in_o all_o holy_a conversation_n of_o their_o life_n here_o than_o first_o we_o have_v the_o apostle_n exhortation_n unto_o the_o philippian_n second_o certain_a reason_n to_o move_v they_o to_o hearken_v unto_o his_o exhortation_n the_o exhortation_n in_o these_o word_n brethren_n etc._n etc._n the_o reason_n in_o the_o verse_n follow_v unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chapter_n his_o exhortation_n consist_v of_o two_o part_n first_o that_o the_o philippian_n will_v be_v follower_n of_o he_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d neither_o do_v the_o word_n simple_o signify_v follower_n but_o that_o they_o will_v be_v follower_n together_o of_o he_o which_o may_v have_v a_o double_a meaning_n either_o â—hat_n they_o will_v all_o with_o one_o mind_n and_o with_o one_o heart_n joint_o together_o follow_v his_o example_n or_o else_o that_o as_o other_o church_n which_o he_o have_v plant_v in_o the_o faith_n follow_v his_o example_n so_o â—hey_n likewise_o together_o with_o they_o will_v follow_v his_o example_n howsoever_o that_o be_v mean_v it_o be_v clear_a that_o the_o apostle_n will_v have_v the_o philippian_n to_o look_v at_o he_o and_o as_o they_o have_v hear_v he_o to_o be_v mind_v and_o see_v he_o to_o walk_v so_o he_o will_v have_v â—hem_n to_o follow_v he_o in_o wholesomenesse_n of_o doctrine_n and_o integrity_n of_o life_n he_o know_v that_o example_n as_o ordinary_o they_o be_v wont_v to_o do_v with_o man_n may_v much_o prevail_v with_o they_o lest_o therefore_o they_o shall_v happy_o be_v draw_v away_o by_o the_o examâ—ples_n of_o the_o false_a teacher_n have_v it_o may_v be_v a_o great_a show_n of_o holiness_n in_o their_o life_n than_o they_o have_v soundness_n of_o judgement_n in_o the_o truth_n he_o draw_v they_o unto_o his_o own_o example_n and_o exhort_v they_o to_o be_v follower_n of_o he_o the_o second_o part_n of_o his_o exhortation_n be_v that_o they_o will_v follow_v the_o example_n of_o they_o that_o be_v like_a unto_o he_o be_v so_o mind_v towards_o the_o truth_n as_o he_o be_v and_o walk_v so_o in_o holy_a conversation_n of_o life_n as_o he_o do_v for_o unto_o the_o former_a part_n of_o his_o exhortation_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v follower_n of_o he_o there_o may_v happy_o exception_n be_v take_v that_o he_o be_v much_o absent_a from_o they_o that_o he_o be_v now_o in_o prison_n that_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o tie_v they_o to_o the_o imitation_n of_o one_o man_n to_o one_o man_n example_n he_o do_v not_o therefore_o tie_v they_o to_o the_o imitation_n of_o himself_o alone_o but_o have_v exhort_v they_o to_o be_v follower_n of_o he_o he_o say_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o look_v on_o they_o with_o a_o diligent_a eye_n unto_o they_o as_o unto_o the_o mark_n whereat_o you_o shoot_v which_o walk_v so_o so_o sound_o ground_v in_o the_o truth_n and_o so_o earnest_o endeavour_v after_o christian_a perfection_n in_o this_o life_n as_o you_o have_v we_o for_o a_o ensample_n in_o who_o doctrine_n be_v nothing_o but_o pure_a in_o who_o life_n be_v nothing_o but_o holy_a so_o that_o he_o allow_v they_o to_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o other_o than_o himself_o but_o with_o all_o he_o do_v not_o leave_v it_o unto_o their_o choice_n to_o follow_v who_o they_o will_v but_o mark_n they_o out_o what_o manner_n of_o man_n they_o shall_v choose_v for_o example_n to_o follow_v namely_o such_o as_o be_v like_o he_o and_o such_o as_o of_o who_o they_o may_v true_o say_v he_o walk_v so_o he_o embrace_v the_o same_o truth_n and_o order_v his_o whole_a life_n as_o our_o apostle_n do_v the_o sum_n then_o of_o his_o exhortation_n be_v as_o iâ—_n he_o have_v thus_o say_v brethren_n you_o have_v hear_v and_o know_v how_o i_o be_o mind_v towards_o the_o truth_n and_o how_o i_o follow_v hard_a towards_o perfection_n in_o my_o life_n be_v you_o follower_n of_o i_o in_o both_o these_o thing_n and_o walk_v so_o as_o you_o have_v i_o for_o a_o ensample_n neither_o do_v i_o tie_v you_o only_o to_o myself_o to_o follow_v i_o but_o look_v who_o they_o be_v that_o walk_n so_o show_v themselves_o a_o ensample_n of_o good_a work_n with_o uncorrupt_a doctrine_n with_o gravity_n integrity_n and_o with_o the_o wholesome_a word_n which_o can_v be_v reprove_v as_o you_o have_v i_o for_o a_o ensample_n and_o look_v diligent_o on_o they_o and_o follow_v they_o as_o they_o follow_v i_o and_o both_o of_o we_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n in_o this_o exhortation_n let_v we_o now_o further_o see_v what_o note_n we_o may_v gather_v hence_o for_o our_o use_n and_o instruction_n the_o first_o thing_n which_o i_o note_n be_v that_o the_o apostle_n will_v have_v the_o philippian_n to_o follow_v the_o example_n not_o of_o whosoever_o each_o man_n in_o his_o private_a fancy_n do_v best_a like_v of_o but_o of_o he_o and_o of_o such_o other_o as_o walk_v so_o as_o they_o have_v he_o for_o a_o ensample_n whence_o i_o observe_v that_o in_o the_o course_n of_o our_o christian_a walk_v we_o be_v to_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o such_o as_o by_o their_o holy_a walk_a show_n plain_o that_o they_o have_v be_v bring_v up_o in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o faithful_a child_n of_o god_n a_o ordinary_a thing_n it_o be_v for_o man_n to_o look_v at_o the_o example_n of_o other_o and_o so_o to_o walk_v as_o they_o have_v other_o for_o example_n for_o the_o example_n of_o other_o go_v before_o we_o be_v a_o great_a inducement_n unto_o we_o to_o do_v the_o like_a whether_o the_o thing_n
integrity_n and_o with_o the_o wholesome_a word_n that_o can_v be_v reprove_v so_o that_o he_o will_v have_v he_o both_o to_o teach_v the_o truth_n sound_o and_o sincere_o and_o in_o his_o life_n to_o carry_v himself_o with_o all_o gravity_n and_o integrity_n to_o be_v a_o pattern_n of_o good_a work_n &_o holiness_n of_o life_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n peter_n exhort_v all_o minister_n to_o feed_v the_o flock_n of_o god_n which_o depend_v on_o they_o 5.2.3_o 1._o pet._n 5.2.3_o and_o to_o be_v example_n to_o the_o flock_n to_o feed_v they_o with_o the_o bread_n of_o god_n the_o wholesome_a word_n of_o truth_n and_o to_o be_v example_n unto_o they_o in_o all_o holiness_n of_o life_n otherwise_o whatsoever_o they_o build_v with_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o pull_v down_o with_o the_o other_o and_o like_v unto_o the_o naughty_a cow_n turn_v down_o with_o their_o foot_n all_o the_o milk_n that_o they_o have_v yield_v for_o preach_v they_o never_o so_o well_o labour_v they_o never_o so_o painful_o be_v they_o never_o so_o eloquent_a and_o mighty_a in_o the_o scripture_n if_o their_o life_n be_v offensive_a their_o teach_n will_v be_v unprofitable_a nay_o if_o their_o people_n can_v once_o say_v unto_o they_o physician_n heal_v thyself_o thou_o that_o teach_v another_o teach_v thou_o not_o thyself_o thou_o that_o preach_v a_o man_n shall_v not_o steal_v 2.21.22_o but_o the_o teacher_n shall_v be_v careful_a as_o of_o that_o they_o say_v so_o of_o that_o they_o do_v to_o lead_v their_o people_n in_o and_o out_o both_o in_o soundness_n of_o doctrine_n and_o in_o holiness_n of_o life_n for_o as_o a_o woe_n be_v unto_o they_o if_o any_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o feed_v so_o likewise_o if_o any_o perish_v by_o their_o ill_a and_o naughty_a example_n of_o live_v let_v they_o then_o look_v unto_o this_o that_o neither_o attend_v unto_o doctrine_n nor_o give_v good_a example_n of_o life_n unto_o other_o &_o they_o also_o that_o attend_v unto_o doctrine_n but_o do_v more_o harm_n by_o their_o example_n of_o life_n they_o they_o do_v good_a by_o their_o teach_n and_o they_o also_o that_o have_a care_n that_o their_o life_n be_v not_o offensive_a either_o do_v not_o or_o can_v teach_v their_o people_n the_o thing_n that_o belong_v unto_o their_o peace_n the_o good_a minister_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v able_a at_o all_o time_n to_o press_v his_o people_n of_o conversation_n yes_o beloved_a if_o we_o be_v to_o bring_v the_o gospel_n of_o your_o salvation_n unto_o you_o you_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o of_o we_o if_o we_o be_v to_o show_v you_o all_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n you_o be_v to_o hear_v it_o of_o we_o if_o we_o be_v to_o go_v before_o you_o in_o a_o sanctify_a life_n you_o be_v to_o follow_v we_o and_o so_o to_o walk_v as_o you_o have_v we_o for_o a_o example_n 13.8_o heb._n 13.8_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n unto_o the_o hebrew_n remember_v they_o which_o have_v the_o oversight_n of_o you_o which_o have_v declare_v unto_o you_o the_o word_n of_o god_n who_o faith_n follow_v consider_v what_o have_v be_v the_o end_n of_o their_o conversation_n and_o our_o apostle_n in_o the_o chapter_n before_o be_v you_o follower_n say_v he_o of_o i_o and_o look_v on_o they_o which_o walk_v so_o as_o you_o have_v we_o for_o a_o example_n which_o of_o we_o will_v not_o condemn_v that_o child_n that_o shall_v not_o hearken_v to_o the_o good_a counsel_n of_o his_o father_n or_o the_o subject_v that_o shall_v contemn_v his_o prince_n ambassador_n belove_a we_o be_v your_o father_n in_o christ_n jesus_n to_o
