and_o chief_a time_n of_o the_o church_n there_o arise_v fourscore_o and_o eight_o several_a kind_n of_o false_a prophet_n which_o seduce_v man_n from_o the_o faith_n and_o true_a religion_n and_o prevail_v great_o and_o no_o doubt_n in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n satan_n will_v now_o show_v his_o malice_n as_o great_a against_o the_o church_n as_o he_o do_v then_o and_o therefore_o be_v account_n this_o that_o minister_n especial_o and_o those_o that_o intend_v that_o call_n shall_v high_o esteem_v and_o reverent_o account_v of_o those_o man_n and_o their_o write_n which_o by_o taint_v with_o this_o corruption_n for_o be_v not_o some_o feast_n day_n appoint_v by_o the_o church_n as_o christ_n nativity_n all_o saint_n and_o such_o like_a observe_v by_o they_o with_o great_a conscience_n and_o reverence_n than_o the_o lord_n own_o sabbath_n though_o the_o memory_n of_o christ_n nativity_n may_v be_v celebrate_v yet_o the_o lord_n day_n shall_v have_v the_o special_a but_o where_o it_o cross_v their_o humour_n there_o to_o leave_v it_o be_v not_o this_o evident_a for_o he_o that_o embrace_v the_o truth_n with_o his_o heart_n will_v frame_v his_o life_n according_a to_o it_o but_o general_o the_o entertainment_n of_o religion_n be_v only_o formal_a for_o though_o man_n profess_v it_o yet_o they_o live_v in_o their_o sin_n they_o make_v it_o to_o jump_v with_o and_o in_o divide_v the_o same_o aright_o give_v thereout_o wholesome_a doctrine_n for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n that_o hear_v in_o former_a time_n when_o the_o study_n of_o scripture_n be_v neglect_v man_n betake_v themselves_o to_o expound_v the_o write_n of_o man_n and_o so_o pprophecy_n be_v banish_v and_o all_o sound_a knowledge_n in_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o hence_o arise_v diversity_n of_o opinion_n and_o multitude_n of_o foolish_a question_n and_o so_o will_v it_o be_v with_o we_o if_o prophesy_v fail_v for_o to_o leave_v the_o right_a handle_n of_o scripture_n be_v the_o way_n to_o bring_v in_o all_o error_n and_o barbarism_n in_o religion_n vi_o every_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v hereby_o teach_v that_o he_o ought_v minister_n to_o be_v answerable_a to_o his_o call_n walk_v worthy_a of_o the_o same_o for_o a_o good_a minister_n be_v know_v by_o his_o good_a fruit_n and_o therefore_o he_o must_v be_v faithful_a in_o perform_v all_o those_o duty_n which_o his_o calling_n do_v bind_v he_o unto_o the_o title_n and_o call_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v high_a and_o excellent_a but_o yet_o they_o will_v not_o commend_v any_o man_n for_o good_a unless_o he_o bring_v forth_o the_o friut_n of_o a_o minister_n in_o the_o faithful_a discharge_n of_o his_o ministerial_a duty_n last_o hence_o we_o must_v learn_v not_o to_o take_v offence_n though_o the_o minister_n fail_v in_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n yea_o though_o there_o be_v contention_n in_o the_o ministry_n about_o matter_n of_o doctrine_n for_o these_o be_v not_o the_o friut_v of_o the_o ministry_n which_o be_v god_n ordinance_n but_o of_o sinful_a man_n who_o bewray_v their_o imperfection_n in_o this_o holy_a call_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o rule_n now_o follow_v the_o proof_n and_o explication_n thereof_o by_o a_o comparison_n draw_v from_o nature_n in_o these_o word_n vers_fw-la 16._o do_v man_n gather_v grape_n of_o thorn_n or_o fig_n of_o thistle_n vers_fw-la 17._o so_o every_o good_a tree_n bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n &_o a_o corrupt_a tree_n bring_v forth_o evil_a fruit_n vers_fw-la 18._o a_o good_a tree_n can_v etc._n etc._n the_o comparison_n stand_v thus_o as_o a_o tree_n be_v know_v of_o every_o one_o by_o his_o fruit_n so_o be_v a_o prophet_n by_o his_o teach_n more_o particular_o as_o a_o good_a tree_n bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n and_o can_v bring_v forth_o evil_a fruit_n and_o as_o a_o evil_a tree_n bring_v forth_o evil_a fruit_n and_o can_v bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n even_o so_o a_o true_a prophet_n teach_v wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o can_v teach_v false_a doctrine_n and_o a_o false_a prophet_n teach_v false_a doctrine_n and_o can_v teach_v true_a doctrine_n touch_v this_o similitude_n first_o observe_v in_o general_a from_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o comparison_n that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n here_o make_v two_o kind_n of_o tree_n a_o good_a tree_n and_o a_o evil_a tree_n by_o a_o evil_a tree_n mean_v that_o which_o in_o regard_n of_o any_o fruit_n be_v as_o a_o rot_a tree_n as_o be_v the_o briar_n the_o thorn_n and_o thistle_n for_o though_o they_o live_v and_o grow_v yet_o they_o be_v void_a of_o good_a fruit_n and_o so_o be_v call_v evil_a now_o here_o it_o may_v well_o be_v demand_v whence_o this_o difference_n of_o tree_n do_v come_v for_o all_o be_v good_a by_o creation_n gen._n 1._o 31._o god_n see_v all_o that_o he_o have_v make_v and_o loâ—_n it_o be_v very_o evil_a good_a answ._n whether_o thorn_n or_o thistle_n be_v create_v of_o god_n i_o will_v not_o now_o dispute_v it_o be_v not_o certain_a that_o they_o be_v but_o now_o it_o be_v plain_a there_o remain_v this_o difference_n among_o plant_n some_o be_v good_a some_o be_v bad_a the_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o some_o come_v from_o god_n blessing_n but_o the_o badness_n and_o barrenness_n of_o other_o come_v from_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o earth_n and_o upon_o all_o creature_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n as_o we_o may_v see_v gen._n 3._o 17._o 18._o the_o earth_n be_v curse_v for_o thy_o sake_n thorn_n also_o and_o thistle_n shall_v it_o bring_v forth_o unto_o thou_o and_o by_o this_o we_o may_v see_v the_o grievousnes_n of_o our_o mother_n sin_n it_o have_v make_v the_o earth_n barren_a and_o curse_a and_o many_o a_o goodly_a plant_n to_o become_v fruitless_a and_o unprofible_a and_o therefore_o when_o we_o behold_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n we_o must_v take_v occasion_n hereof_o to_o consider_v our_o own_o sin_n and_o blame_v ourselves_o and_o not_o the_o creature_n for_o they_o be_v curse_v for_o our_o sake_n now_o more_o particular_o this_o comparison_n be_v here_o special_o apply_v unto_o prophet_n but_o if_o we_o compare_v this_o place_n with_o s._n luke_n chap._n 6._o 44._o and_o 45._o we_o shall_v see_v the_o holy_a ghost_n their_o restrain_v not_o this_o say_n to_o prophet_n alone_o but_o enlarge_v the_o same_o unto_o other_o man_n say_v a_o good_a man_n out_o of_o the_o good_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n bring_v forth_o good_a thing_n and_o a_o evil_a man_n out_o of_o the_o evil_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n bring_v forth_o evil_a now_o by_o compare_v these_o together_o we_o may_v see_v that_o this_o comparison_n reach_v both_o unto_o prophet_n and_o to_o all_o other_o man_n from_o whence_o we_o may_v gather_v these_o instruction_n i._o what_o we_o be_v to_o conceive_v and_o think_v of_o a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o regenerate_v unregenerate_a we_o be_v all_o by_o nature_n branch_n of_o the_o wild_a olive_n and_o therefore_o as_o a_o thorn_n can_v bring_v forth_o a_o grape_n nor_o a_o thistle_n fig_n no_o more_o can_v a_o man_n unregenerate_a bring_v forth_o a_o good_a work_n and_o this_o we_o may_v more_o plain_o conceive_v if_o we_o consider_v a_o little_a the_o work_n of_o man_n they_o may_v all_o be_v reduce_v to_o three_o head_n some_o be_v evil_a as_o work_v forbid_v of_o god_n some_o be_v thing_n indifferent_a be_v neither_o forbid_v nor_o commannd_v and_o some_o be_v good_a work_n as_o outward_a duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n now_o for_o evil_a work_n they_o can_v possible_o be_v good_a in_o any_o man_n for_o work_n indifferent_a as_o eat_v drink_v buy_v sell_v etc._n etc._n they_o be_v sin_n not_o in_o themselves_o but_o in_o he_o that_o use_v they_o be_v out_o of_o christ_n and_o for_o the_o outward_a duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n as_o evil_a justice_n liberality_n and_o such_o like_a they_o be_v good_a work_n in_o themselves_o because_o god_n require_v they_o but_o yet_o in_o the_o unregenerate_a they_o be_v sin_n to_o the_o pure_a all_o thing_n be_v pure_a but_o to_o they_o that_o be_v defile_v and_o unbelieve_a be_v nothing_o pure_a tit._n 1._o 15._o and_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v unpossible_a to_o please_v god_n hebr._n 11._o 6._o it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o liberality_n chastity_n etc._n etc._n be_v the_o good_a gift_n of_o god_n ans._n that_o be_v true_a and_o they_o be_v good_a work_n as_o they_o be_v give_v and_o command_v of_o god_n but_o as_o they_o be_v receive_v and_o use_v of_o the_o natural_a man_n they_o be_v sin_n for_o he_o fail_v from_o the_o right_a use_n of_o those_o action_n both_o for_o the_o begin_n of_o they_o for_o they_o proceed_v not_o in_o he_o from_o a_o pure_a heart_n a_o good_a conscience_n and_o faith_n unfeigned_a and_o also_o in_o the_o end_n he_o do_v they_o not_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n simple_o but_o withal_o he_o aim_v at_o his_o own_o praise_n and_o reputation_n or_o some_o such_o sinister_a respect_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v this_o i._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o consider_v and_o sin_n acknowledge_v the_o greatness_n of_o our_o for_o outward_a thing_n and_o become_v more_o subject_a to_o outward_a misery_n then_o before_o so_o as_o if_o they_o judge_v of_o happiness_n by_o their_o present_a outward_a estate_n they_o may_v easy_o suspect_v the_o truth_n of_o christ_n doctrine_n and_o think_v he_o have_v deceive_v they_o because_o he_o promise_v they_o happiness_n and_o yet_o for_o outward_a thing_n their_o case_n be_v far_o worse_a then_o before_o they_o know_v he_o this_o our_o saviour_n christ_n consider_v do_v here_o go_v about_o to_o remove_v this_o false_a conceit_n out_o of_o their_o mind_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n deliver_v this_o doctrine_n unto_o they_o in_o the_o first_o general_a head_n of_o his_o sermon_n that_o true_a happiness_n before_o god_n be_v ever_o join_v yea_o cover_v many_o time_n with_o the_o cross_n in_o this_o world_n whereby_o he_o strike_v at_o the_o root_n of_o their_o carnal_a conceit_n who_o place_v true_a happiness_n in_o outward_a thing_n and_o look_v for_o outward_a happiness_n with_o the_o cross_n second_o this_o serve_v to_o teach_v we_o patience_n in_o affliction_n for_o it_o 2_o be_v god_n will_v to_o temper_v happiness_n and_o the_o cross_n together_o now_o this_o put_v life_n into_o a_o afflict_a soul_n to_o think_v that_o christ_n will_v have_v his_o felicity_n enjoy_v and_o feel_v in_o outward_a misery_n thus_o much_o of_o this_o head_n of_o claim_n to_o true_a felicity_n the_o bless_a poor_a be_v poor_a in_o spirit_n and_o this_o poverty_n we_o must_v find_v in_o our_o heart_n if_o we_o will_v know_v ourselves_o to_o be_v true_o happy_a but_o after_o trial_n this_o will_v be_v find_v much_o want_v for_o first_o if_o man_n live_v outward_o civil_a and_o keep_v themselves_o from_o gross_a sin_n this_o thought_n of_o pride_n take_v place_n in_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v righteous_a and_o they_o persuade_v themselves_o with_o the_o 20_o young_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n that_o they_o can_v keep_v god_n commandment_n second_o let_v worldly_a want_n befall_v man_n in_o body_n good_n or_o name_n and_o they_o be_v grieve_v yea_o their_o soul_n be_v full_a of_o sorrow_n but_o for_o spiritual_a want_n as_o blindness_n of_o mind_n hardness_n of_o heart_n unbelief_n and_o disobedience_n their_o heart_n be_v never_o touch_v now_o whence_o come_v this_o but_o from_o that_o pride_n of_o heart_n whereby_o they_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o estate_n and_o think_v all_o be_v well_o with_o they_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o soul_n so_o that_o true_a it_o be_v poverty_n of_o spirit_n be_v hard_o to_o be_v find_v the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n three_o every_o one_o must_v give_v all_o diligence_n to_o be_v season_v throughout_o with_o this_o heavenly_a salt_n that_o the_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n the_o word_n of_o his_o mouth_n and_o the_o action_n of_o his_o life_n may_v be_v all_o savoury_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n in_o christ_n yea_o in_o his_o conversation_n with_o man_n he_o must_v labour_v to_o show_v the_o power_n of_o this_o season_n coloss._n 4._o 6._o let_v your_o speech_n be_v gracious_a always_o and_o powder_v with_o salt_n that_o be_v season_v by_o the_o word_n that_o it_o may_v savour_n of_o grace_n to_o those_o that_o hear_v us._n if_o we_o live_v under_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o be_v not_o season_v therewith_o our_o case_n be_v dangerous_a for_o therein_o it_o be_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o salt_n which_o cause_v barrenness_n where_o it_o season_v not_o as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o abimelech_n who_o sow_v 〈◊〉_d salt_n in_o shechem_n to_o make_v the_o ground_n barren_a and_o the_o place_n despise_v but_o if_o the_o salt_n have_v lose_v his_o savour_n wherewith_o shall_v it_o be_v salt_v it_o be_v thenceforth_o good_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o be_v cast_v out_o and_o tread_v under_o the_o foot_n of_o man_n here_o christ_n amplifi_v the_o former_a reason_n whereby_o he_o move_v his_o apostle_n to_o fidelity_n and_o diligence_n in_o their_o ministry_n by_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o contrary_a infidelity_n which_o be_v as_o unsavourie_a salt_n incurable_a and_o unprofitable_a and_o so_o subject_a to_o a_o fearful_a curse_n and_o therefore_o say_v christ_n you_o have_v need_v to_o be_v faithful_a in_o season_v the_o world_n by_o your_o ministry_n in_o this_o amplification_n we_o may_v observe_v four_o point_n first_o the_o ordinary_a sin_n that_o do_v accompany_v the_o call_n of_o the_o ministry_n second_o the_o danger_n of_o this_o sin_n three_o the_o unprofitablenes_n of_o such_o a_o ministry_n four_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n due_a unto_o it_o i._o point_n as_o other_o calling_n have_v their_o several_a fault_n so_o have_v the_o call_n of_o a_o minister_n note_v in_o these_o word_n if_o the_o salt_n have_v lose_v his_o savour_n etc._n etc._n salt_n be_v say_v to_o become_v unsavourie_a when_o it_o lose_v that_o virtue_n and_o acrimonie_n which_o it_o have_v in_o season_v that_o flesh_n on_o which_o it_o be_v cast_v now_o minister_n be_v as_o unsavourie_a salt_n when_o they_o become_v unprofitable_a in_o their_o ministry_n and_o either_o do_v not_o or_o can_v dispense_v god_n minister_n and_o those_o also_o that_o destinate_a themselves_o to_o this_o call_n must_v have_v special_a care_n so_o to_o be_v qualify_v for_o this_o work_n and_o so_o to_o preach_v the_o word_n in_o his_o mind_n but_o when_o a_o man_n know_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v true_a and_o avouch_v it_o to_o be_v false_a or_o know_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v false_a avouch_v it_o to_o be_v true_a upon_o his_o oath_n this_o be_v perjury_n because_o in_o so_o do_v he_o speak_v against_o his_o mind_n and_o persuasion_n second_o in_o perjury_n there_o must_v be_v a_o oath_n it_o be_v not_o perjury_n to_o speak_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v false_a unless_o he_o also_o swear_v to_o the_o thing_n he_o speak_v false_o against_o his_o mind_n and_o yet_o every_o oath_n make_v not_o direct_a perjury_n unless_o after_o their_o fall_n second_o because_o he_o commit_v evil_a and_o wickedness_n continual_o without_o 2_o cease_v and_o therefore_o be_v compare_v to_o a_o 8._o hunger-bitten_a lion_n who_o go_v about_o continual_o seek_v who_o he_o may_v devour_v the_o most_o wicked_a man_n that_o be_v or_o ever_o be_v will_v sometime_o do_v good_a 16_o pharaoh_n humble_v himself_o and_o confess_v his_o ministry_n among_o us._n but_o hence_o we_o answer_v that_o we_o have_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n and_o our_o minister_n be_v the_o true_a minister_n of_o god_n for_o proof_n hereof_o our_o minister_n have_v the_o outward_a call_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n they_o say_v indeed_o our_o call_n be_v nought_o because_o they_o have_v power_n from_o god_n to_o call_v in_o who_o hand_n it_o be_v but_o to_o omit_v that_o question_n for_o this_o time_n sufficient_a approbation_n of_o our_o ministry_n may_v be_v have_v from_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o minister_n as_o they_o be_v minister_n for_o to_o leave_v the_o fruit_n of_o their_o life_n as_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o judge_v they_o by_o our_o minister_n teach_v through_o god_n blessing_n the_o true_a and_o wholesome_a doctrine_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n and_o be_v allove_v and_o call_v hereto_o by_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n and_o accept_v of_o their_o people_n who_o obedience_n to_o the_o faith_n be_v the_o seal_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o confirm_v the_o call_n of_o our_o minister_n if_o it_o have_v not_o christ_n will_v not_o have_v say_v you_o shall_v know_v they_o by_o their_o fruit_n 3._o use._n whereas_o christ_n say_v you_o shall_v know_v they_o speak_v to_o all_o his_o teacher_n hearer_n he_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o every_o believer_n may_v be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o false_a prophet_n and_o therefore_o every_o one_o in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n ought_v to_o labour_v for_o so_o much_o knowledge_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o know_v a_o teacher_n by_o his_o fruit_n and_o doctrine_n this_o then_o show_v that_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o know_v the_o sum_n of_o true_a religion_n comprise_v in_o the_o article_n of_o faith_n and_o in_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n both_o for_o their_o true_a meaning_n and_o right_a and_o profitable_a use_n unto_o themselves_o which_o thing_n i_o note_v whereas_o wholesome_a doctrine_n out_o of_o scripture_n be_v a_o note_n liver_n of_o a_o true_a prophet_n it_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o may_v lawful_o use_v the_o ministry_n of_o those_o man_n who_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v evil_a and_o offensive_a if_o so_o be_v their_o doctrine_n be_v sound_a and_o good_a the_o disciple_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n must_v not_o do_v according_a to_o the_o way_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisy_n but_o yet_o they_o must_v hearâ—_n they_o when_o they_o sit_v in_o moses_n chair_n that_o be_v when_o they_o teach_v moses_n doctrine_n and_o paul_n be_v glad_a when_o christ_n be_v 18._o true_o preach_v though_o it_o be_v not_o in_o sincerity_n of_o affection_n but_o of_o envy_n when_o the_o disciple_n see_v a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o call_v
