concur_v with_o faith_n in_o the_o subject_n or_o party_n justify_v though_o not_o in_o the_o act_n of_o justify_v so_o that_o a_o necessity_n of_o gospel-obedience_n to_o accompany_v that_o faith_n which_o shall_v justify_v be_v acknowledge_v on_o all_o hand_n and_o if_o man_n have_v but_o lay_v out_o themselves_o as_o much_o to_o possess_v the_o people_n with_o a_o thorough_a sense_n of_o this_o as_o they_o have_v to_o preserve_v they_o from_o the_o error_n of_o the_o papist_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o may_v i_o conceive_v have_v be_v much_o better_a with_o their_o soul_n than_o now_o it_o be_v for_o while_o their_o ear_n and_o eye_n have_v be_v fill_v so_o much_o with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n without_o work_n when_o they_o have_v mean_v it_o only_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o popish_a sense_n and_o so_o little_a with_o the_o doctrine_n touch_v the_o unavailablenesse_n of_o that_o faith_n unto_o justification_n that_o do_v not_o knit_v the_o soul_n to_o christ_n with_o such_o love_n as_o by_o which_o man_n deny_v themselves_o of_o their_o lust_n and_o sinful_a pleasure_n and_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n with_o they_o that_o call_v upon_o the_o lord_n with_o a_o pure_a heart_n hence_o i_o fear_v it_o have_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n among_o we_o have_v have_v so_o little_a sense_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n and_o have_v presume_v so_o much_o upon_o their_o faith_n touch_v christ_n which_o yet_o have_v be_v but_o the_o dead_a faith_n james_n speak_v of_o as_o that_o they_o have_v to_o the_o sad_a deceive_a of_o their_o own_o soul_n think_v themselves_o in_o safe_a condition_n although_o they_o have_v live_v sensual_a and_o carnal_a life_n and_o principle_n the_o minister_n too_o many_o of_o they_o have_v indulge_v themselves_o and_o people_n too_o in_o a_o dull_a heavy_a cold_a partial_a flat_a and_o less_o than_o formal_a way_n of_o righteousness_n which_o three_o thing_n i_o conceive_v contain_v the_o sum_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n let_v we_o now_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o these_o and_o see_v from_o the_o scripture_n who_o and_o what_o be_v the_o right_a object_n of_o save_v faith_n him_n who_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o the_o text_n propound_v as_o the_o object_n of_o this_o belief_n be_v say_v to_o be_v he_o who_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a whether_o by_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a we_o shall_v understand_v god_n the_o father_n distinct_o or_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o needful_a to_o inquire_v since_o as_o both_o concur_v in_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a so_o both_o be_v the_o object_n of_o justify_v faith_n for_o as_o in_o due_a time_n christ_n die_v for_o the_o ungodly_a rom._n 5.6_o that_o he_o may_v justify_v they_o by_o his_o blood_n so_o god_n the_o father_n have_v set_v he_o forth_o to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n rom._n 3.25_o and_o as_o to_o understand_v the_o apostle_n as_o meaning_n the_o father_n seem_v to_o suit_n best_o with_o the_o precedent_a verse_n so_o to_o understand_v he_o as_o not_o exclude_v the_o son_n will_v well_o answer_v his_o general_a design_n in_o assert_v atonement_n remission_n of_o sin_n or_o justification_n by_o christ_n for_o the_o ungodly_a gentile_n upon_o their_o believe_a in_o opposition_n to_o those_o who_o appropriate_v these_o to_o the_o work_n of_o moses_n law_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v a_o great_a variety_n of_o expression_n use_v in_o scripture_n to_o set_v forth_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n sometime_o make_v god_n the_o father_n and_o his_o record_n concern_v his_o son_n the_o object_n and_o sometime_o christ_n as_o messiah_n promise_v as_o son_n of_o god_n as_o die_v as_o rise_v again_o and_o sometime_o the_o word_n or_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n but_o all_o relate_n to_o and_o depend_v original_o upon_o the_o father_n i_o shall_v touch_v each_o of_o these_o particular_o but_o with_o much_o brevity_n because_o i_o hope_v you_o be_v not_o so_o much_o unacquainted_a with_o these_o thing_n as_o i_o fear_v you_o be_v in_o that_o upon_o which_o i_o principal_o intend_v enlargement_n sect._n 2_o i._o justification_n be_v ascribe_v unto_o god_n the_o father_n as_o him_z in_o who_o we_o must_v believe_v and_o upon_o who_o we_o must_v depend_v for_o it_o in_o many_o other_o scripture_n beside_o my_o text_n rom._n 8.33_o and_o 3.30_o gal._n 3.8_o hence_o justification_n be_v call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o god_n as_o he_o be_v the_o
forgive_v trespass_n that_o their_o faith_n whatever_o otherwise_o it_o be_v be_v not_o of_o the_o right_a kind_n neither_o such_o as_o will_v avail_v they_o to_o justification_n for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o forgiveness_n from_o god_n as_o there_o be_v not_o where_o there_o be_v not_o forgive_a of_o man_n there_o be_v no_o justification_n and_o where_o there_o be_v no_o justification_n there_o be_v no_o justify_v faith_n how_o then_o will_v they_o be_v able_a to_o evince_v their_o faith_n to_o be_v of_o the_o justify_v kind_n who_o be_v apt_a to_o render_v evil_a for_o evil_n and_o to_o bear_v grudge_n one_o against_o another_o upon_o account_n of_o injury_n receive_v and_o to_o ease_v themselves_o by_o throw_v the_o burden_n of_o other_o weakness_n whole_o upon_o they_o by_o spread_v and_o aggravate_v they_o and_o that_o too_o before_o all_o due_a mean_n on_o their_o part_n have_v be_v use_v to_o cure_v they_o i_o may_v but_o i_o will_v not_o enlarge_v this_o sect._n 18_o 9_o there_o be_v other_o way_n and_o vein_n wherein_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n as_o viz._n by_o do_v to_o all_o man_n in_o point_n of_o commerce_n and_o deal_v as_o they_o themselves_o will_v be_v do_v unto_o in_o like_a case_n mat._n 7.12_o not_o use_v any_o deceit_n or_o fraud_n not_o take_v advantage_n of_o other_o weakness_n not_o cruel_o work_v upon_o other_o necessity_n for_o man_n will_v not_o be_v so_o serve_v themselves_o but_o set_v the_o law_n of_o neighbourly_a and_o brotherly_a love_n before_o they_o in_o all_o their_o civil_a transaction_n and_o affair_n with_o other_o but_o i_o shall_v not_o enlarge_v further_o upon_o this_o doctrine_n of_o love_n as_o it_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o faith_n have_v already_o dwell_v long_o on_o it_o than_o at_o first_o i_o intend_v only_o let_v it_o be_v remember_v for_o a_o close_a of_o this_o matter_n that_o man_n love_n to_o god_n and_o man_n in_o these_o and_o other-like_a way_n of_o work_v hold_v proportion_n with_o their_o faith_n so_o that_o where_o they_o be_v rich_a in_o faith_n they_o abound_v in_o love_n and_o where_o they_o be_v poor_a and_o low_a and_o narrow-spirited_n in_o act_n of_o love_n to_o god_n and_o of_o kindness_n mercy_n and_o bounty_n to_o man_n it_o be_v a_o sure_a sign_n their_o faith_n be_v not_o well_o thrive_v 2_o thes_n 1.3_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o thank_v god_n always_o for_o you_o brethren_n as_o it_o be_v meet_v because_o that_o your_o faith_n grow_v exceed_o and_o the_o charity_n of_o every_o one_o of_o you_o all_o towards_o each_o other_o abound_v mark_v if_o you_o hear_v of_o their_o faith_n grow_v exceed_o to_o be_v sure_a you_o will_v hear_v also_o of_o their_o love_n abound_v also_o and_o thus_o i_o have_v now_o dispatch_v also_o the_o handle_n not_o only_o this_o property_n of_o faith_n but_o also_o this_o branch_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n which_o concern_v the_o nature_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o shall_v be_v count_v unto_o man_n for_o righteousness_n chap._n xii_o show_v that_o faith_n be_v count_v for_o righteousness_n both_o as_o it_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o justify_v virtue_n of_o christ_n blood_n and_o as_o it_o put_v they_o under_o the_o protection_n and_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o it_o be_v a_o fulfil_n of_o it_o and_o so_o discover_v the_o opinion_n of_o man_n be_v justify_v before_o believe_v and_o of_o be_v justify_v by_o believe_v only_o in_o the_o court_n of_o man_n conscience_n to_o be_v unsound_a sect._n 1_o i_o have_v already_o be_v show_v 1._o the_o believe_a of_o what_o and_o 2._o what_o believe_v it_o be_v that_o shall_v be_v count_v for_o righteousness_n now_o i_o shall_v come_v in_o the_o 3._o and_o last_o place_n to_o show_v how_o or_o in_o what_o sense_n this_o faith_n be_v count_v unto_o man_n for_o righteousness_n for_o count_v for_o righteousness_n it_o be_v so_o say_v our_o text._n but_o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o righteousness_n as_o christ_n his_o death_n and_o blood_n be_v viz._n by_o way_n of_o atonement_n rom._n 5.9_o 11._o for_o that_o be_v the_o incommunicable_a property_n of_o christ_n blood_n heb._n 1.3_o which_o be_v reckon_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n too_o in_o a_o sense_n proper_a to_o it_o for_o christ_n be_v say_v to_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o righteousness_n 1_o cor._n 1.30_o and_o so_o he_o be_v when_o the_o attone_a virtue_n of_o his_o blood_n the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n be_v make_v over_o convey_v reckon_v or_o impute_v to_o we_o for_o our_o justification_n but_o this_o in_o a_o way_n infinite_o superior_a to_o the_o imputation_n of_o faith_n for_o righteousness_n for_o faith_n itself_o and_o the_o activity_n of_o that_o and_o all_o other_o grace_n in_o their_o sphere_n become_v acceptable_a with_o god_n as_o build_v and_o bottom_v upon_o that_o sure_a foundation_n christ_n jesus_n and_o therefore_o i_o exceed_v much_o desire_n that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n may_v have_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o your_o confidence_n touch_v the_o merit_n of_o remission_n of_o your_o sin_n and_o that_o your_o confidence_n about_o justification_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o faith_n but_o as_o that_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v ordain_v to_o entitle_v you_o to_o the_o other_o and_o the_o gracious_a privilege_n annex_v to_o it_o nor_o with_o work_n further_o than_o they_o be_v appoint_v by_o god_n to_o render_v your_o faith_n a_o substantial_a and_o not_o deceitful_a title_n 2._o but_o come_v we_o then_o to_o show_v in_o the_o affirmative_a how_o faith_n be_v count_v for_o righteousness_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v according_a to_o my_o understanding_n lay_v out_o to_o you_o in_o two_o thing_n sect._n 2_o 1._o faith_n be_v a_o mean_n of_o our_o justification_n or_o be_v reckon_v towards_o our_o righteous-making_a as_o it_o be_v a_o mean_v appoint_v by_o god_n to_o interest_n we_o in_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o the_o attone_a virtue_n of_o his_o blood_n for_o our_o pardon_n and_o acceptation_n for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a christ_n give_v himself_o a_o ransom_n for_o all_o 1_o tim._n 2.6_o and_o taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n heb._n 2.9_o yet_o all_o be_v not_o thereupon_o deliver_v from_o their_o sin_n and_o why_o but_o because_o they_o have_v not_o that_o faith_n which_o shall_v give_v they_o a_o right_n and_o propriety_n in_o the_o justify_n virtue_n of_o his_o death_n for_o christ_n be_v not_o give_v to_o die_v for_o man_n upon_o such_o term_n as_o that_o they_o shall_v reap_v the_o benefit_n of_o his_o blood_n in_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n however_o they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o towards_o he_o well_o or_o ill_o and_o therefore_o the_o man_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o from_o be_v necessary_a upon_o any_o such_o account_n as_o if_o it_o can_v in_o the_o least_o operate_v as_o christ_n blood_n do_v or_o add_v any_o thing_n unto_o the_o save_a virtue_n thereof_o and_o yet_o necessary_a it_o be_v because_o such_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o that_o the_o save_a benefit_n of_o that_o blood_n shall_v not_o be_v make_v over_o unto_o any_o man_n but_o upon_o condition_n of_o his_o believe_a so_o i_o say_v of_o work_n i_o mean_v gospel-obedience_n though_o we_o say_v they_o be_v so_o necessary_a as_o that_o no_o man_n faith_n from_o be_v necessary_a upon_o any_o such_o score_n as_o christ_n blood_n be_v necessary_a or_o as_o if_o they_o can_v contribute_v any_o thing_n unto_o its_o atone_a virtue_n nor_o be_v it_o necessary_a in_o this_o case_n to_o suppose_v they_o to_o be_v formal_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n nor_o to_o be_v essential_a to_o the_o act_n of_o believe_a nor_o that_o the_o same_o justify_v act_n office_n or_o power_n be_v place_v in_o they_o by_o god_n as_o be_v in_o faith_n yet_o necessary_a they_o be_v unto_o justification_n because_o such_o be_v the_o will_n and_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n as_o that_o though_o he_o will_v have_v faith_n to_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o justify_n and_o save_v benefit_n of_o christ_n blood_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o interess_n a_o unprofitable_a dead_a barren_a fruitless_a formal_a faith_n in_o that_o save_a benefit_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n but_o reserve_v this_o honour_n for_o that_o faith_n only_o which_o be_v a_o think_v or_o conceive_v that_o faith_n in_o its_o first_o justify_v act_n in_o close_v with_o christ_n shall_v be_v accompany_v with_o work_n when_o as_o that_o first_o act_n be_v do_v in_o a_o in_o the_o soul_n first_o fasten_n upon_o christ_n by_o faith_n for_o salvation_n i_o say_v that_o soul_n that_o do_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n with_o a_o sense_n of_o such_o worthiness_n in_o he_o as_o to_o desire_v and_o resolve_v through_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o give_v up_o itself_o to_o he_o and_o to_o be_v command_v by_o he_o that_o faith_n that_o soul_n by_o all_o the_o to_o be_v deliver_v of_o such_o conception_n and_o to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n to_o perfection_n when_o opportunity_n come_v and_o not_o like_o that_o corn_n that_o grow_v upon_o the_o housetop_n that_o wither_v before_o it_o come_v to_o maturity_n they_o be_v never_o like_a to_o obtain_v the_o honour_n and_o reputation_n of_o such_o desire_n and_o resolution_n as_o will_v pass_v for_o good_a work_n in_o god_n account_n but_o if_o the_o soul_n in_o its_o first_o close_v with_o christ_n by_o faith_n go_v arm_v and_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o soul_n attend_v with_o real_a hearty_a and_o unfeigned_a desire_n and_o purpose_n to_o render_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o love_n honour_n and_o service_n according_a to_o the_o benefit_n it_o expect_v to_o receive_v from_o he_o and_o that_o nothing_o but_o lack_v of_o opportunity_n hinder_v the_o real_a act_n and_o execute_v these_o desire_n and_o resolve_v with_o suitable_a endeavour_n doubtless_o that_o soul_n that_o faith_n be_v accept_v with_o the_o lord_n as_o
for_o it_o we_o have_v this_o evangelist_n word_n for_o it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o forecited_n verse_n where_o he_o say_v that_o they_o viz._n the_o devil_n know_v that_o he_o be_v christ_n if_o any_o shall_v think_v that_o possible_o the_o devil_n may_v have_v the_o same_o faith_n that_o will_v justify_v man_n if_o it_o be_v in_o they_o though_o it_o will_v do_v they_o no_o good_a as_o not_o be_v in_o the_o like_a capacity_n of_o grace_n as_o man_n be_v yet_o that_o passage_n in_o james_n 2._o 19_o will_v oppose_v such_o a_o thought_n for_o wherefore_o do_v the_o apostle_n mention_v the_o faith_n of_o devil_n there_o but_o to_o disparage_v the_o unprofitable_a and_o dead_a faith_n of_o some_o christian_n and_o to_o give_v they_o to_o know_v that_o if_o hard_o for_o their_o conscience_n and_o evince_v with_o power_n him_z that_o wrought_v they_o to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o it_o may_v be_v they_o may_v have_v a_o desire_n to_o have_v stifle_v that_o light_n and_o to_o have_v overcome_v that_o conviction_n which_o they_o have_v as_o that_o which_o do_v oppose_v that_o carnal_a interest_n of_o praise_n which_o they_o have_v with_o man_n which_o it_o seem_v they_o love_v more_o than_o christ_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o let_v it_o go_v for_o his_o sake_n and_o be_v not_o this_o the_o case_n of_o such_o who_o hold_v the_o voluntary_a than_o love_n if_o a_o man_n have_v all_o faith_n never_o so_o strong_a a_o persuasion_n touch_v the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o he_o can_v remove_v mountain_n and_o have_v not_o love_n it_o will_v profit_v he_o nothing_o 1_o cor._n 13.2_o if_o there_o be_v first_o a_o willing_a mind_n it_o be_v accept_v etc._n etc._n 2_o cor._n 8.12_o that_o be_v sure_o a_o necessary_a ingredient_n to_o render_v any_o act_n of_o the_o creature_n acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o consequent_o rewardable_a by_o he_o 1_o cor._n 9.17_o for_o if_o i_o do_v this_o thing_n willing_o i_o have_v a_o reward_n take_v heed_n then_o of_o venture_v your_o precious_a soul_n upon_o this_o faith_n that_o lie_v but_o in_o a_o naked_a and_o bare_a assent_n to_o the_o general_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n chap._n vi_o further_n discover_v that_o neither_o the_o act_n of_o reliance_n or_o dependence_n upon_o god_n or_o christ_n for_o salvation_n without_o the_o concurrence_n of_o a_o love_a and_o loyal_a adhesion_n to_o he_o will_v avail_v to_o salvation_n sect._n 1_o have_v already_o show_v that_o faith_n by_o the_o first_o of_o those_o three_o act_n mention_v in_o the_o
