christ_n satisfaction_n how_o can_v he_o reap_v unto_o himself_o from_o thence_o any_o assurance_n of_o reconciliation_n to_o god_n who_o he_o former_o offend_v if_o we_o may_v and_o must_v do_v something_o in_o our_o own_o person_n whereby_o to_o appease_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n why_o have_v our_o saviour_n teach_v we_o for_o our_o heart_n relief_n whole_o and_o only_o to_o make_v the_o plea_n of_o pardon_n for_o our_o sin_n true_a it_o be_v indeed_o that_o popish_a confessor_n do_v teach_v their_o penitent_n when_o they_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o they_o for_o sin_n to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o conscience_n by_o performance_n of_o a_o formal_a humiliation_n and_o repentance_n yea_o to_o offer_n unto_o god_n some_o ceremonial_a duty_n in_o way_n of_o satisfaction_n but_o when_o sorrow_n seize_v upon_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o man_n fall_v into_o temptation_n than_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o these_o direction_n be_v not_o currant_n for_o notwithstanding_o they_o he_o may_v want_v sound_a comfort_n in_o god_n mercy_n and_o run_v into_o despair_n without_o recovery_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n upon_o experience_n it_o have_v be_v prove_v that_o even_a papist_n themselves_o in_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n have_v be_v content_a to_o renounce_v their_o own_o work_n yea_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o humane_a satisfaction_n and_o to_o cleave_v only_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o their_o salvation_n by_o these_o instance_n and_o many_o more_o that_o may_v be_v allege_v to_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v apparent_a upon_o how_o weak_a and_o unstable_a ground_n the_o case-divinitie_n of_o the_o popish_a church_n stand_v and_o how_o indirect_a a_o course_n they_o take_v for_o the_o resolution_n and_o direction_n of_o the_o trouble_a conscience_n now_o by_o the_o benefit_n and_o abuse_v of_o this_o doctrine_n we_o see_v how_o necessary_a it_o be_v that_o in_o church_n which_o profess_v christian_a religion_n it_o shall_v be_v more_o teach_v and_o further_o enlarge_v than_o it_o be_v and_o to_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o man_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o ministry_n that_o have_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n attain_v unto_o the_o tongue_n of_o the_o learned_a will_v employ_v their_o pain_n this_o way_n not_o only_o in_o search_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o such_o point_n as_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n receive_v and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o three_o ground_n chap._n iii_o of_o the_o subjection_n and_o power_n of_o conscience_n the_o four_o and_o last_o ground_n be_v touch_v the_o subjection_n and_o power_n of_o conscience_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v two_o thing_n what_o conscience_n be_v and_o what_o be_v the_o natural_a condition_n of_o it_o in_o every_o man_n for_o the_o first_o the_o name_n of_o conscience_n will_v give_v light_n to_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o it_o signify_v a_o knowledge_n join_v with_o a_o knowledge_n and_o it_o be_v so_o term_v in_o two_o respect_n first_o because_o when_o a_o man_n know_v or_o think_v any_o thing_n by_o mean_n of_o conscience_n he_o know_v what_o he_o know_v &_o think_v second_o because_o by_o it_o man_n know_v that_o thing_n of_o himself_o which_o god_n also_o know_v of_o he_o man_n have_v two_o witness_n of_o his_o thought_n god_n and_o his_o own_o conscience_n god_n be_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a and_o conscience_n be_v the_o second_o subordinate_a unto_o god_n bear_v witness_n unto_o god_n either_o with_o the_o man_n or_o against_o he_o therefore_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o a_o man_n know_v what_o he_o think_v what_o he_o will_v and_o desire_n as_o also_o in_o what_o manner_n he_o know_v think_v or_o will_v either_o good_a or_o evil_n whereunto_o this_o must_v be_v add_v that_o as_o conscience_n know_v our_o thought_n will_n &_o action_n so_o it_o testify_v thereof_o unto_o god_n either_o with_o follow_v that_o no_o man_n commandment_n or_o law_n can_v of_o itself_o and_o by_o it_o own_o sovereign_a power_n bind_v conscience_n but_o do_v it_o only_o by_o the_o authority_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n or_o some_o part_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v allege_v that_o subjection_n be_v due_a to_o the_o magistrate_n for_o conscience_n sake_n rom._n 13._o 5._o the_o answer_n be_v at_o hand_n that_o subjection_n be_v indeed_o to_o be_v perform_v to_o civil_a authority_n ordain_v by_o god_n and_o obedience_n also_o to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o when_o they_o die_v they_o be_v full_o persuade_v there_o opinion_n be_v the_o truth_n again_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n put_v the_o case_n a_o man_n shall_v be_v of_o opinion_n that_o fornication_n or_o theft_n be_v thing_n arbitrarie_a and_o indifferent_a and_o hereupon_o his_o conscience_n shall_v tell_v he_o he_o may_v take_v opportunity_n and_o commit_v either_o of_o these_o sin_n whether_o
