officiate_n therein_o under_o john_n hamilton_n a_o episcopal_a preacher_n who_o have_v recommend_v his_o book_n at_o the_o order_n of_o the_o bishop_n of_o edinburgh_n but_o i_o suppose_v the_o episcopal_a church_n in_o britain_n will_v give_v john_n alexander_n or_o his_o patriot_n john_n hamilton_n little_a thanks_o for_o his_o service_n see_v many_o episcopal_a teacher_n in_o britain_n differ_v wide_o in_o doctrine_n from_o the_o say_v westminster_n confession_n and_o have_v i._o a._n no_o other_o confession_n of_o faith_n or_o catechism_n to_o commend_v but_o that_o of_o the_o presbyterian_o who_o his_o episcopal_a brethren_n common_o call_v fanatic_n and_o be_v it_o turn_v to_o that_o that_o they_o commend_v their_o confession_n of_o faith_n as_o the_o only_a confession_n of_o the_o church_n in_o britain_n but_o i_o can_v find_v no_o mention_n in_o the_o say_a confession_n that_o episcopacy_n be_v jure_fw-la divino_fw-la however_o since_o i._o a._n have_v undertake_v the_o defence_n of_o the_o presbyterian_a church_n and_o faith_n in_o all_o its_o article_n and_o definition_n as_o very_a gospel_n rule_n and_o scripture_n sentence_n he_o must_v then_o acknowledge_v that_o all_o these_o definition_n and_o article_n of_o his_o presbyterian_a brethren_n be_v at_o leave_v material_o consider_v infallible_a oracle_n â—nd_o see_v he_o confess_v they_o be_v not_o all_o express_o contain_v in_o scripture_n but_o many_o of_o they_o only_o deduce_v by_o consequence_n therefrom_o by_o what_o infallible_a consequence_n can_v he_o convince_v any_o rational_a man_n that_o his_o and_o their_o consequence_n be_v just_a and_o right_o since_o he_o lay_v no_o claim_n to_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o that_o kind_n of_o direction_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n teach_v he_o and_o his_o brethren_n to_o draw_v those_o consequence_n which_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n have_v whereby_o they_o argue_v and_o do_v draw_v consequence_n from_o place_n of_o scripture_n former_o write_v and_o see_v not_o only_a papist_n and_o protestant_n but_o the_o episcopal_a and_o presbyterian_a draw_v contrary_a consequence_n from_o the_o scripture_n what_o evidence_n can_v i._o a._n give_v we_o why_o we_o shall_v receive_v the_o consequence_n of_o the_o one_o more_o than_o the_o other_o or_o can_v we_o think_v the_o lord_n have_v leave_v his_o people_n so_o in_o the_o dark_a as_o to_o give_v no_o other_o knowledge_n of_o his_o will_n in_o a_o great_a many_o thing_n whiâ—h_o be_v article_n of_o faith_n but_o what_o can_v be_v search_v out_o by_o long_a and_o tedious_a consequence_n of_o the_o bare_a natural_a understanding_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v leave_v to_o itself_o to_o fish_n and_o hunt_v in_o the_o dark_a after_o such_o consequence_n without_o any_o such_o special_a direction_n and_o conduct_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o least_o measure_n which_o christ_n and_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n have_v nay_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o i._o a._n do_v acknowledge_v so_o much_o as_o the_o least_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o any_o sort_n of_o operation_n or_o illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o â—uch_o as_o that_o they_o call_v effective_a or_o subjective_a order_n to_o draw_v their_o consequence_n from_o the_o scripture_n but_o if_o this_o way_n of_o draw_v consequence_n without_o the_o help_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v so_o safe_a and_o sure_a how_o be_v it_o then_o that_o so_o many_o of_o all_o sort_n draw_v contrary_a consequence_n from_o the_o same_o scripture_n be_v not_o the_o great_a reason_n of_o all_o this_o because_o man_n be_v depart_v from_o that_o holy_a spirit_n which_o give_v forth_o the_o scripture_n and_o can_v only_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o not_o plain_a and_o manifest_a as_o the_o light_n at_o noonday_n that_o man_n natural_a spirit_n and_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n in_o its_o high_a perfection_n be_v altogether_o unable_a to_o meddle_v with_o divine_a truth_n or_o to_o search_v after_o they_o as_o it_o remain_v alone_o hunt_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o certain_o this_o be_v no_o small_a part_n of_o that_o curse_a self-conceit_n and_o exaltation_n of_o mind_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o degenerate_v nature_n of_o man_n that_o they_o think_v they_o can_v be_v wise_a enough_o without_o god_n spirit_n they_o need_v no_o direction_n or_o assistance_n or_o illumination_n to_o help_v they_o to_o search_v into_o the_o scripture_n they_o can_v do_v that_o well_o enough_o with_o their_o natural_a reason_n and_o a_o little_a school-craft_n of_o artificial_a logic_n and_o grammar_n and_o natural_a philosophy_n but_o that_o bless_a man_n david_n be_v of_o another_o mind_n when_o he_o pray_v unto_o the_o lord_n say_v open_v my_o eye_n that_o i_o may_v see_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o thy_o law_n and_o as_o for_o consequence_n which_o man_n draw_v as_o they_o be_v direct_v and_o teach_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n be_v when_o they_o draw_v any_o consequence_n from_o what_o be_v former_o write_v we_o do_v own_o they_o and_o receive_v they_o and_o none_o else_o but_o yet_o as_o to_o the_o most_o weighty_a and_o necessary_a thing_n to_o wit_n such_o as_o be_v the_o general_a principle_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o doctrine_n and_o which_o as_o such_o be_v general_o to_o be_v receive_v by_o all_o christian_n as_o well_o these_o of_o the_o mean_a capacity_n as_o other_o of_o the_o great_a we_o see_v the_o lord_n have_v not_o leave_v it_o to_o man_n industry_n to_o in_o scripture_n i_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o i_o shall_v receive_v or_o believe_v it_o as_o any_o common_a article_n or_o principle_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n or_o life_n and_o for_o such_o to_o who_o god_n have_v give_v that_o divine_a skill_n to_o â—ive_a or_o dip_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o scripture_n 〈◊〉_d out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o other_o man_n who_o may_v â—e_v true_a christian_n so_o as_o to_o collect_v or_o gather_v by_o just_a and_o true_a consequence_n other_o thing_n that_o lie_v out_o of_o the_o view_n of_o their_o weak_a brethren_n they_o ought_v not_o to_o obtrude_v they_o upon_o any_o to_o be_v receive_v as_o principle_n of_o faith_n but_o in_o that_o case_n to_o have_v faith_n to_o themselves_o and_o receive_v they_o as_o peculiar_a discovery_n or_o revelation_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o they_o and_o such_o other_o as_o god_n have_v so_o enlighten_v the_o which_o by_o the_o apostle_n paul_n be_v call_v the_o word_n of_o wisdom_n to_o wit_n such_o a_o peculiar_a degree_n of_o wisdom_n or_o understanding_n in_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o scripture_n as_o other_o who_o yet_o be_v true_a christian_n do_v not_o reach_v unto_o and_o concern_v such_o a_o peculiar_a gift_n of_o divine_a wisdom_n he_o say_v we_o speak_v wisdom_n among_o the_o perfect_a this_o certain_o can_v be_v no_o common_a article_n of_o faith_n else_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v i._n a._n his_o consequence_n follow_v that_o then_o they_o shall_v never_o have_v require_v more_o of_o any_o man_n in_o order_n to_o his_o admission_n to_o that_o office_n but_o his_o alone_a sufficient_a skill_n in_o grammar_n and_o logic_n a_o example_n in_o other_o case_n will_v show_v the_o weakness_n of_o this_o consequence_n it_o be_v report_v that_o plato_n make_v it_o a_o infallible_a rule_n to_o receive_v none_o into_o his_o school_n but_o he_o who_o have_v some_o skill_n in_o geometry_n do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v that_o he_o require_v no_o more_o of_o any_o man_n in_o order_n to_o his_o admission_n to_o be_v his_o scholar_n but_o that_o he_o have_v some_o skill_n in_o that_o science_n another_o instance_n may_v be_v this_o in_o divers_a incorporation_n and_o city_n it_o be_v a_o infallible_a rule_n that_o none_o may_v be_v admit_v to_o be_v a_o magistrate_n in_o the_o say_a city_n or_o incorporation_n but_o he_o that_o be_v a_o freeman_n therein_o do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v that_o nothing_o be_v more_o require_v of_o any_o man_n in_o order_n to_o his_o be_v a_o magistrate_n but_o that_o he_o be_v a_o freeman_n in_o that_o city_n now_o suppose_v very_o fair_o query_v i_o hope_v whether_o she_o make_v it_o not_o a_o infallible_a rule_n see_v for_o many_o year_n bygone_a she_o have_v make_v no_o minister_n but_o some_o as_o at_o least_o pretend_v to_o have_v grammar_n and_o logic_n and_o language_n and_o be_v call_v master_n of_o those_o art_n howbeit_o many_o of_o they_o have_v but_o a_o very_a small_a scantling_n of_o they_o for_o all_o the_o stress_n that_o seem_v to_o be_v lay_v on_o they_o and_o i_o query_n whether_o it_o be_v not_o one_o of_o the_o canon_n of_o the_o church_n that_o none_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n but_o who_o have_v those_o aforesaid_a art_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o infallible_a or_o absolute_a rule_n or_o canon_n in_o the_o case_n then_o why_o do_v they_o not_o frequent_o allow_v man_n want_v those_o art_n who_o possible_o may_v have_v all_o the_o other_o qualification_n require_v to_o enter_v into_o the_o ministry_n and_o it_o be_v further_o query_v whether_o i._o a._n or_o the_o church_n that_o he_o do_v own_o do_v establish_v and_o avow_v that_o doctrine_n of_o james_n durhame_n positive_o assert_v in_o his_o commentary_n on_o the_o revelation_n that_o grammar_n logic_n or_o the_o like_a acquire_v art_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o esse_fw-la or_o being_n of_o a_o minister_n of_o christ_n and_o consequent_o much_o more_o till_o they_o have_v as_o much_o and_o perhaps_o more_o of_o true_a divine_a knowledge_n than_o i._o a._n ever_o have_v without_o all_o i._o a._n his_o art_n which_o he_o do_v so_o high_o magnify_v but_o i._o a._n say_v the_o infallible_a rule_n to_o make_v a_o minister_n of_o christ_n be_v set_v down_o in_o 1_o tim._n 3._o and_o tit._n 1._o answ._n it_o be_v very_o well_o but_o i_o can_v find_v in_o these_o place_n or_o any_o where_o else_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n that_o artificial_a grammar_n and_o logic_n be_v make_v any_o one_o part_n of_o that_o infallible_a rule_n or_o that_o god_n have_v any_o where_o appoint_v they_o as_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o attain_v divine_a knowledge_n and_o if_o they_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o divine_a knowledge_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o all_o who_o have_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o true_a divine_a knowledge_n have_v also_o humane_a art_n or_o else_o they_o be_v extraordinary_o teach_v none_o of_o which_o i_o judge_v i._n a._n will_v ready_o grant_v now_o the_o infallible_a rule_n set_v down_o by_o the_o apostle_n in_o these_o place_n already_o cite_v require_v that_o bishop_n and_o deacon_n and_o consequent_o outward_a and_o in_o that_o case_n it_o be_v no_o less_o true_o immediate_a than_o if_o it_o be_v without_o it_o as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v and_o suppose_v but_o not_o at_o all_o grant_n that_o the_o inward_a teach_v of_o the_o spirit_n be_v never_o without_o the_o outward_a of_o the_o letter_n yet_o see_v the_o outward_a teach_v of_o the_o letter_n be_v oft_o without_o the_o inward_a for_o many_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o letter_n who_o be_v not_o spiritual_o teach_v all_o that_o the_o letter_n have_v outward_o teach_v they_o it_o follow_v evident_o that_o the_o inward_a teach_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o outward_a teach_v of_o the_o letter_n be_v distinct_a thing_n as_o be_v manifest_a from_o that_o sure_a maxim_n that_o when_o two_o thing_n can_v be_v separate_a so_o as_o the_o one_o to_o be_v without_o the_o other_o they_o be_v real_o distinct_a this_o argument_n i_o use_v in_o my_o book_n call_v quakerism_n no_o popery_n but_o i._o a._n have_v make_v no_o reply_n to_o it_o
