of_o the_o preferment_n of_o this_o world_n or_o to_o show_v their_o gift_n or_o which_o be_v worse_o to_o cover_v secret_a wicked_a practice_n or_o open_a fault_n second_o that_o we_o build_v not_o our_o faith_n upon_o wrong_a cause_n or_o ground_n such_o as_o be_v the_o respect_n of_o any_o man_n person_n or_o opinion_n or_o the_o entice_a word_n of_o man_n wisdom_n or_o the_o mere_a colour_n and_o probability_n of_o man_n argument_n but_o be_v sure_a we_o place_v our_o faith_n upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n three_o that_o we_o be_v not_o deceive_v with_o the_o seem_a effect_n of_o faith_n but_o learn_v to_o distinguish_v between_o the_o force_n of_o the_o word_n upon_o our_o heart_n when_o we_o be_v mere_o as_o it_o be_v patient_n and_o the_o force_n of_o the_o word_n work_v a_o habit_n or_o action_n in_o us._n i_o express_v my_o meaning_n thus_o many_o a_o man_n live_v in_o a_o place_n where_o the_o word_n be_v teach_v in_o the_o power_n and_o glory_n of_o it_o come_v to_o hear_v without_o any_o care_n or_o purpose_n to_o regard_n or_o profit_n by_o it_o yet_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o delivery_n of_o it_o so_o shine_v in_o his_o heart_n that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o convince_v but_o for_o the_o time_n delight_v and_o hear_v with_o great_a gladness_n as_o feel_v his_o heart_n to_o be_v warm_v with_o the_o doctrine_n he_o hear_v yet_o care_v not_o for_o it_o when_o he_o be_v go_v away_o nor_o make_v any_o use_n of_o it_o at_o all_o as_o be_v destitute_a of_o any_o gift_n by_o which_o he_o shall_v receive_v or_o apply_v the_o doctrine_n so_o that_o this_o heat_n in_o his_o heart_n do_v not_o arise_v from_o any_o habit_n in_o he_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o but_o only_o from_o the_o forcible_a penetration_n of_o the_o doctrine_n as_o in_o stony_a place_n where_o there_o be_v a_o little_a earth_n mingle_v withal_o whereas_o he_o that_o believe_v aright_o and_o so_o will_v hold_v out_o have_v the_o natural_a stoninesse_n of_o his_o heart_n dissolve_v by_o the_o word_n and_o be_v so_o affect_v with_o it_o for_o the_o present_a that_o he_o receive_v it_o so_o as_o it_o tarry_v in_o he_o and_o grow_v in_o he_o and_o he_o bring_v 16._o we_o must_v receive_v nothing_o here_o no_o not_o in_o the_o least_o part_n of_o the_o apparel_n of_o these_o truth_n which_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o some_o pattern_n in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n last_o we_o must_v believe_v these_o article_n but_o not_o all_o with_o one_o kind_n of_o faith_n for_o some_o of_o these_o thing_n we_o believe_v in_o that_o be_v place_v our_o trust_n and_o confidence_n and_o all_o hope_n of_o happiness_n in_o they_o so_o we_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o other_o thing_n we_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o but_o believe_v as_o the_o property_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o church_n as_o we_o may_v discern_v by_o the_o difference_n of_o speak_v in_o the_o creed_n we_o say_v i_o believe_v in_o god_n but_o do_v not_o say_v i_o believe_v in_o the_o holy_a church_n etc._n etc._n the_o use_n may_v be_v first_o for_o information_n we_o may_v hence_o gather_v that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o sound_a christian_n in_o any_o place_n there_o be_v but_o few_o that_o believe_v their_o creed_n observe_v all_o the_o duty_n and_o condition_n require_v in_o belief_n and_o consequent_o but_o few_o that_o receive_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v this_o will_v appear_v if_o a_o trial_n can_v be_v make_v even_o in_o the_o place_n that_o be_v most_o populous_a and_o abound_v most_o with_o christian_n in_o name_n for_o if_o all_o the_o sort_n of_o man_n be_v cast_v out_o that_o have_v not_o a_o faith_n agreeable_a to_o this_o doctrine_n there_o will_v be_v but_o a_o few_o leave_v as_o for_o instance_n 1._o cast_v out_o all_o such_o worldly_a mind_a people_n as_o have_v not_o at_o all_o regard_v their_o creed_n or_o the_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o it_o undoubted_o some_o such_o there_o be_v who_o scarce_o learn_v their_o creed_n at_o all_o and_o live_v so_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n as_o they_o never_o regard_v religion_n at_o all_o with_o their_o heart_n 2._o cast_v out_o all_o such_o as_o understand_v not_o their_o creed_n many_o can_v say_v the_o word_n who_o yet_o never_o be_v instruct_v concern_v the_o meaning_n and_o have_v not_o any_o competent_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n concern_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o article_n now_o it_o be_v impossible_a these_o shall_v be_v true_a believer_n 3._o cast_v out_o such_o as_o know_v perhaps_o the_o meaning_n but_o assent_v not_o to_o the_o doctrine_n they_o can_v tell_v whether_o these_o thing_n be_v true_a or_o no_o nor_o how_o to_o approve_v they_o and_o be_v there_o not_o in_o all_o place_n diverse_a man_n that_o be_v of_o this_o humour_n be_v there_o not_o man_n that_o will_v be_v of_o any_o religion_n that_o be_v temporizer_n 4._o cast_v out_o such_o as_o believe_v that_o all_o the_o doctrine_n be_v true_a but_o it_o be_v by_o such_o a_o say_v as_o the_o devil_n have_v for_o the_o devil_n believe_v the_o doctrine_n to_o be_v true_a but_o so_o as_o they_o hate_v it_o and_o the_o teach_n of_o it_o and_o all_o such_o as_o thrive_v in_o knowledge_n and_o profession_n of_o it_o be_v there_o not_o multitude_n of_o people_n with_o we_o that_o discover_v this_o kind_n of_o devilish_a quality_n do_v they_o not_o from_o their_o heart_n loath_a preach_v do_v they_o not_o from_o their_o heart_n hate_v such_o as_o be_v the_o best_a believer_n do_v they_o not_o ready_o and_o spiteful_o speak_v evil_a of_o such_o as_o fear_v god_n in_o every_o place_n these_o can_v be_v right_a that_o believe_v loathe_v 5._o cast_v out_o such_o as_o believe_v with_o a_o dead_a faith_n that_o be_v such_o as_o find_v no_o manner_n of_o fear_n nor_o virtue_n nor_o operation_n in_o these_o doctrine_n but_o can_v take_v in_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o literal_a knowledge_n of_o these_o truth_n and_o yet_o it_o have_v no_o power_n to_o work_v upon_o their_o heart_n these_o have_v not_o so_o much_o faith_n as_o the_o devil_n have_v for_o they_o believe_v and_o tremble_v that_o be_v they_o be_v affright_v and_o extreme_o amaze_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o fulfil_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o these_o truth_n consider_v their_o own_o misery_n whereas_o multitude_n of_o christian_n hear_v of_o belief_n and_o talk_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o be_v not_o a_o whit_n move_v either_o with_o fear_n or_o sorrow_n 6._o cast_v out_o such_o as_o have_v but_o a_o temporary_a faith_n and_o in_o they_o consider_v first_o what_o they_o have_v in_o their_o faith_n and_o then_o by_o what_o thing_n it_o may_v be_v manifest_a that_o their_o faith_n be_v insufficient_a for_o the_o first_o these_o man_n be_v not_o altogether_o without_o faith_n they_o have_v knowledge_n of_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o assent_n to_o it_o and_o be_v assure_v it_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o can_v prove_v it_o and_o they_o hate_v not_o the_o doctrine_n but_o rather_o like_v it_o and_o love_v it_o and_o beside_o their_o belief_n of_o these_o thing_n work_v much_o upon_o they_o for_o they_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n mat._n 13._o yea_o and_o be_v move_v and_o persuade_v to_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o by_o it_o escape_v
