make_v use_n of_o for_o thus_o it_o stand_v with_o you_o and_o his_o offer_n speak_v this_o either_o make_v use_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o soul-travel_n for_o save_v of_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v satisfy_v or_o if_o you_o slight_v he_o you_o not_o only_o destroy_v and_o cause_n to_o perish_v your_o own_o soul_n but_o you_o refuse_v to_o satisfy_v chirst_n for_o his_o soul-travel_n and_o do_v what_o in_o you_o lie_v to_o mar_v and_o defeat_v the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o be_v not_o this_o a_o great_a and_o strong_o push_v dilemma_n the_o result_n of_o your_o receive_n or_o reject_v of_o christ_n will_v be_v this_o if_o you_o receive_v he_o you_o satisfy_v he_o if_o you_o reject_v he_o you_o say_v you_o be_v not_o content_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o what_o can_v be_v expect_v to_o come_v of_o it_o when_o christ_n suffer_v so_o much_o and_o when_o all_o that_o be_v crave_v of_o you_o be_v to_o make_v use_n of_o he_o and_o when_o it_o be_v tell_v that_o that_o will_v satisfy_v he_o and_o yet_o that_o be_v refuse_v what_o a_o horrible_a challenge_n will_v this_o be_v in_o the_o great_a day_n and_o therefore_o to_o press_v this_o use_v a_o little_a we_o shall_v show_v you_o here_o 1._o what_o it_o be_v that_o we_o exhort_v you_o to_o and_o 2._o what_o be_v the_o force_n of_o this_o motive_n 1._o we_o will_v commend_v to_o you_o in_o general_a that_o you_o will_v endeavour_v the_o salvation_n of_o your_o own_o soul_n this_o be_v it_o he_o cry_v to_o you_o prov._n 1.22_o how_o long_o you_o simple_a one_o will_v you_o love_v simplicity_n and_o you_o scorner_n delight_v in_o scorn_v turn_v you_o at_o my_o reproof_n etc._n etc._n he_o aim_v at_o this_o that_o you_o shall_v get_v your_o soul_n save_v from_o wrath_n and_o this_o shall_v not_o be_v prejudicial_a nor_o at_o the_o long_o run_v unsatisfy_v to_o yourselves_o and_o it_o will_v be_v very_o satisfy_v to_o he_o 2._o it_o be_v not_o only_o to_o aim_v at_o salvation_n simple_o but_o to_o aim_v at_o it_o by_o he_o to_o aim_v at_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o justification_n through_o his_o righteousness_n and_o satisfaction_n and_o that_o you_o will_v bring_v no_o other_o argument_n before_o god_n to_o plead_v upon_o for_o your_o peace_n with_o he_o but_o this_o and_o that_o you_o will_v aim_v at_o holiness_n as_o a_o fruit_n of_o his_o death_n he_o have_v purchase_v a_o peculiar_a people_n to_o himself_o to_o be_v zealous_a of_o good_a work_n as_o it_o be_v tit._n 2.14_o and_o that_o you_o will_v aim_v to_o do_v holy_a duty_n by_o his_o strengthen_n of_o you_o and_o that_o you_o will_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o he_o which_o be_v your_o victory_n over_o the_o world_n and_o the_o very_a soul_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o holy_a duty_n and_o 3._o that_o you_o aim_v to_o have_v a_o comfortable_a refreshfull_a and_o cheerful_a life_n in_o he_o and_o by_o what_o be_v in_o he_o as_o if_o it_o be_v your_o own_o it_o be_v legal_o you_o by_o faith_n in_o he_o to_o be_v stop_v your_o own_o mouth_n as_o have_v nothing_o in_o yourselves_o to_o boast_v of_o and_z as_o i_o just_a now_o say_v to_o be_v cheer_v and_o delight_v yourselves_o from_o that_o which_o be_v in_o he_o and_o as_o it_o be_v psal_n 147._o even_o to_o be_v hope_v in_o his_o mercy_n in_o a_o word_n it_o be_v to_o be_v study_v peace_n with_o god_n through_o he_o to_o be_v study_v holiness_n in_o his_o strength_n and_o to_o be_v study_v a_o comfortable_a and_o cheerful_a walk_n through_o the_o ground_n of_o joy_n that_o be_v give_v you_o in_o he_o which_o be_v very_o reasonable_a will_v you_o then_o do_v he_o a_o favour_n and_o have_v he_o delight_v and_o satisfy_v do_v but_o this_o give_v he_o your_o soul_n to_o be_v save_v by_o he_o in_o his_o own_o way_n come_v to_o he_o sensible_a of_o sin_n and_o sound_v your_o peace_n on_o he_o though_o weak_a in_o yourselves_o yet_o strong_a in_o he_o on_o who_o as_o the_o mighty_a one_o god_n have_v lay_v help_n and_o study_v holiness_n in_o his_o strength_n draw_v virtue_n from_o he_o only_o to_o moritify_v your_o lust_n that_o it_o may_v be_v know_v that_o christ_n have_v die_v and_o your_o satisfy_v of_o christ_n by_o yield_v you_o refuse_v disdain_a and_o scorn_v it_o and_o will_v not_o make_v use_n of_o he_o for_o your_o peace_n and_o will_v noâ—_n in_o his_o strength_n study_v holiness_n though_o your_o own_o soul_n shall_v never_o be_v save_v nor_o he_o satisfy_v or_o his_o soul-travel_n this_o of_o all_o other_o challenge_n will_v be_v the_o sharp_a and_o most_o bitting_a and_o upon_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o may_v be_v most_o comfort_v to_o a_o poor_a body_n that_o be_v sensible_a of_o sin_n and_o afraid_a of_o wrath_n be_v there_o or_o can_v there_o be_v hazard_n to_o do_v christ_n a_o pleasure_n by_o believe_v on_o he_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n delightsome_a to_o he_o and_o therefore_o let_v this_o be_v one_o great_a motive_n to_o press_v believe_v in_o christ_n be_v promise_v to_o he_o as_o the_o great_a thing_n in_o which_o he_o delight_v and_o by_o which_o he_o
not_o mix_v with_o faith_n and_o that_o for_o make_v the_o duty_n acceptable_a faith_n be_v necessary_o requisite_a we_o may_v clear_o see_v heb._n 11.6_o where_o it_o be_v express_o say_v that_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o how_o be_v it_o that_o abel_n offer_v a_o more_o excellent_a sacrifice_n than_o cain_n it_o be_v nothing_o sure_a in_o cain_n a_o common_a and_o easy_a thing_n though_o the_o most_o part_n think_v it_o to_o be_v so_o if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o to_o the_o difficulty_n of_o it_o and_o to_o the_o rarity_n of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n there_o be_v no_o duty_n have_v need_n more_o to_o be_v press_v than_o this_o even_o that_o christ_n jesus_n shall_v get_v the_o burden_n of_o your_o immortal_a soul_n cast_v on_o he_o by_o this_o saving_n faith_n i_o shall_v therefore_o in_o the_o further_a prosecution_n of_o this_o first_o show_v what_o main_o you_o will_v eshew_v and_o avoid_v as_o that_o and_o extract_v you_o out_o of_o they_o and_o therefore_o 1._o beware_v of_o rest_v on_o a_o doctrinal_a faith_n which_o before_o i_o call_v historical_a we_o know_v it_o be_v hard_a to_o convince_v some_o that_o they_o want_v faith_n yet_o we_o will_v have_v you_o to_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v not_o every_o kind_n of_o faith_n but_o save_v faith_n that_o will_v do_v your_o turn_n it_o be_v the_o want_n of_o that_o which_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o and_o therefore_o to_o open_v this_o a_o little_a you_o will_v consider_v that_o there_o may_v be_v real_o such_o a_o faith_n as_o be_v a_o assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n in_o a_o natural_a man_n yea_o in_o a_o reprobate_n but_o that_o faith_n will_v never_o unite_v to_o christ_n nor_o be_v wait_v with_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n first_o i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o every_o one_o that_o be_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n have_v this_o doctrinal_a faith_n to_o believe_v a_o heaven_n and_o a_o hell_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o all_o that_o believe_v in_o christ_n shall_v get_v pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n the_o carriage_n alace_o of_o many_o testify_v that_o they_o have_v not_o this_o much_o whatever_o fleet_a notion_n they_o may_v have_v of_o these_o thing_n or_o whatever_o esteem_n they_o may_v seem_v to_o put_v on_o the_o gospel_n and_o whatever_o profession_n they_o may_v make_v that_o they_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o yet_o in_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v a_o fixedness_n in_o the_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o man_n they_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o soul_n live_v as_o they_o do_v neither_o yet_o second_o do_v we_o say_v that_o all_o they_o that_o have_v this_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o somewhat_o of_o it_o do_v believe_v every_o passage_n in_o it_o alike_o but_o often_o as_o they_o please_v they_o they_o believe_v they_o hence_o many_o believe_v what_o the_o word_n speak_v of_o mercy_n and_o of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o question_v that_o but_o what_o it_o speak_v of_o holiness_n and_o of_o the_o severity_n of_o god_n reckon_n with_o man_n for_o sin_n they_o do_v not_o so_o credit_v that_o part_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v true_a where_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o other_o will_v some_o way_n be_v but_o because_o the_o one_o agree_v better_a with_o their_o corruption_n than_o the_o other_o therefore_o the_o one_o be_v not_o so_o so_o receive_v as_o the_o other_o and_o it_o be_v very_o frequent_a with_o such_o to_o be_v find_v diminish_v from_o one_o place_n and_o add_v to_o another_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o three_o do_v we_o say_v that_o all_o man_n do_v in_o a_o like_a and_o equal_a degree_n believe_v the_o truâ—h_n of_o the_o word_n there_o be_v in_o some_o more_o knowledge_n in_o some_o less_o in_o some_o more_o conviction_n in_o some_o few_o and_o though_o we_o preach_v to_o you_o all_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o that_o believe_v not_o this_o to_o be_v god_n ordinance_n albeit_o there_o be_v many_o who_o will_v not_o be_v save_v that_o take_v this_o word_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o believe_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o because_o the_o word_n itself_o say_v it_o be_v so_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v 1._o because_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o be_v not_o save_v but_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v hâ—ve_v it_o now_o this_o doctrinal_a faith_n be_v not_o save_v and_o so_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v have_v it_o yea_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v and_o james_n do_v not_o dispute_v with_o these_o to_o who_o he_o write_v on_o this_o account_n that_o they_o believe_v not_o thus_o but_o tell_v they_o that_o historical_a faith_n be_v not_o enough_o and_o we_o think_v a_o man_n in_o nature_n may_v have_v a_o great_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o what_o it_o say_v will_v come_v to_o pass_v and_o yet_o still_o continue_v but_o a_o natural_a man._n a_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o scripture_n speak_v so_o often_o of_o many_o sort_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v not_o save_v as_o exod._n 14._o at_o the_o close_a it_o be_v say_v the_o people_n believe_v the_o lord_n and_o psal_n 106.12_o than_o they_o believe_v his_o word_n and_o sing_v his_o praise_n and_o john_n 2.23_o many_o believe_v on_o christ_n to_o who_o he_o do_v not_o commit_v himself_o there_o be_v faith_n in_o they_o which_o his_o sign_n and_o miracle_n extort_a from_o they_o which_o be_v not_o save_v and_o matth._n 13._o two_o or_o three_o such_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a that_o be_v not_o save_v however_o sound_v they_o may_v be_v in_o their_o own_o kind_n and_o 1_o cor._n 13._o we_o have_v such_o a_o faith_n speak_v of_o as_o a_o man_n dare_v not_o deny_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n though_o he_o shall_v bring_v his_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v by_o his_o avouch_v of_o the_o same_o a_o three_o reason_n be_v because_o as_o much_o credit_n may_v be_v give_v to_o the_o word_n as_o be_v give_v to_o any_o other_o history_n that_o be_v creditable_o believe_v and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o we_o believe_v there_o be_v such_o man_n as_o cesar_n pompey_n wallace_n etc._n etc._n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o there_o may_v be_v impression_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o hearer_n that_o this_o be_v god_n word_n back_v with_o some_o common_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o it_o be_v general_o receive_v to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o the_o part_n of_o the_o world_n we_o live_v in_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o that_o folk_n believe_v thus_o and_o drink_v in_o this_o historical_a or_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o word_n so_o as_o they_o may_v even_o dare_v to_o suffer_v to_o death_n for_o it_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o may_v want_v save_v faith_n the_o devil_n be_v as_o sure_a as_o any_o natural_a man_n be_v that_o god_n be_v true_a and_o that_o his_o word_n will_v be_v perform_v and_o therefore_o they_o say_v to_o christ_n be_v thou_o come_v to_o torment_v we_o before_o the_o time_n the_o pang_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n in_o man_n will_v assure_v they_o of_o a_o judgement_n come_v though_o they_o tremble_v to_o think_v on_o it_o and_o therefore_o may_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o doctrinal_a only_o yet_o it_o come_v near_a to_o our_o practice_n than_o we_o be_v aware_a of_o and_o though_o we_o have_v not_o socinian_n in_o opinion_n and_o profession_n to_o deal_v with_o yet_o we_o have_v two_o sort_n that_o be_v socinian_n in_o heart_n among_o we_o 1._o these_o that_o secure_o sin_n on_o still_o and_o yet_o hope_v to_o get_v mercy_n and_o who_o will_v confess_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n but_o that_o for_o make_v a_o amends_o they_o will_v pray_v and_o mend_v their_o life_n and_o they_o will_v speak_v of_o a_o number_n of_o thing_n but_o it_o may_v be_v not_o one_o word_n of_o christ_n or_o of_o his_o purchase_n or_o of_o their_o natural_a inclination_n to_o presume_v and_o to_o slight_a christ_n as_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o yet_o to_o look_v to_o but_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n without_o a_o saviour_n or_o as_o if_o god_n have_v remove_v or_o will_v remove_v the_o curse_n threaten_v without_o a_o satisfaction_n so_o that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v not_o know_v nor_o rest_v on_o by_o the_o multitude_n of_o hypocrite_n that_o live_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n and_o this_o be_v easy_o prove_v from_o this_o that_o there_o be_v but_o very_o few_o who_o make_v use_v of_o he_o or_o stand_v in_o awe_n to_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v believe_v that_o justice_n require_v and_o will_v have_v satisfaction_n either_o of_o the_o sinner_n himself_o or_o of_o a_o surety_n in_o his_o room_n and_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o only_a surety_n folk_n will_v either_o quit_v their_o hope_n of_o heaven_n or_o be_v more_o in_o christ_n common_a and_o that_o so_o many_o mantain_n the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n without_o a_o due_a consideration_n of_o a_o satisfaction_n to_o justice_n by_o christ_n and_o without_o employ_v of_o he_o it_o declare_v plain_o that_o they_o be_v drunken_a with_o this_o error_n a_o second_o sort_n be_v these_o who_o be_v waken_v in_o conscience_n and_o sensible_a of_o sin_n yet_o be_v as_o heartless_a hesitate_v and_o hopeless_a to_o get_v peace_n through_o he_o as_o if_o he_o have_v not_o satisfy_v what_o else_o do_v the_o doubt_v and_o despondency_n of_o such_o say_v but_o that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o complete_a satisfaction_n in_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o dare_v not_o trust_v to_o it_o otherwise_o they_o will_v wonder_v that_o god_n have_v provide_v such_o a_o remedy_n and_o yet_o adventure_v to_o rest_v upon_o it_o see_v god_n be_v as_o well_o please_v with_o it_o as_o if_o they_o have_v not_o provoke_v he_o at_o all_o or_o have_v satisfy_v his_o justice_n themselves_o 2_o it_o serve_v to_o let_v we_o see_v what_o we_o be_v in_o god_n common_a and_o debt_n and_o how_o much_o we_o be_v oblige_v to_o the_o mediator_n when_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n that_o either_o he_o shall_v suffer_v or_o that_o we_o shall_v perish_v and_o that_o though_o his_o suffering_n draw_v so_o deep_a as_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o exclude_v not_o the_o reprobate_n simple_o from_o temporal_a and_o common_a favour_n and_o mercy_n that_o come_v by_o his_o death_n they_o may_v have_v and_o actual_o have_v common_a gift_n and_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o mean_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v some_o way_n effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o same_o covenant_n but_o we_o say_v that_o the_o reprobate_n partake_v not_o of_o save_v mercy_n and_o that_o christ_n death_n be_v a_o satisfaction_n only_o for_o the_o elect_n and_o that_o none_o other_o get_v pardon_n of_o sin_n faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n by_o it_o but_o they_o only_o it_o be_v intend_v for_o none_o other_o and_o this_o we_o clear_a and_o confirm_v from_o and_o by_o these_o follow_a ground_n and_o argument_n which_o we_o shall_v short_o hint_n at_o the_o 1._o argument_n be_v draw_v from_o this_o same_o assertion_n of_o the_o prophet_n thus_o if_o christ_n death_n be_v only_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o god_n people_n than_o it_o be_v christ_n righteousness_n yet_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o it_o they_o will_v fall_v out_o in_o such_o expression_n as_o these_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o of_o ourselves_o there_o be_v no_o goodness_n in_o we_o it_o be_v god_n grace_n that_o must_v do_v our_o turn_n yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n it_o be_v not_o christ_n righteousness_n they_o lie_v down_o to_o themselves_o as_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o justification_n but_o the_o good_a which_o they_o have_v do_v as_o they_o suppose_v in_o christ_n strength_n and_o the_o grace_n which_o be_v give_v they_o to_o work_v and_o do_v that_o good_a welcome_a he_o which_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o love_n he_o be_v a_o sweet_a wooer_n he_o be_v that_o good_a shepherd_n that_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o sheep_n he_o give_v
