reconcile_v and_o well_o please_v with_o the_o elect_n whilst_o they_o remain_v in_o a_o state_n of_o enmity_n against_o he_o be_v vile_a and_o notorious_a sinner_n god_n can_v but_o hate_v sin_n wherever_o it_o be_v and_o loath_a the_o unrenewed_a sinner_n when_o he_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o in_o the_o first_o adam_n or_o as_o in_o their_o filthiness_n for_o as_o such_o he_o hate_v and_o loathe_v they_o but_o as_o he_o look_v upon_o any_o person_n in_o christ_n so_o he_o love_v they_o and_o be_v at_o peace_n and_o well_o please_v with_o they_o god_n see_v not_o as_o man_n see_v for_o he_o see_v a_o man_n condemn_v and_o justify_v at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n nay_o as_o be_v in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o as_o be_v in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v but_o whatever_o sight_n of_o thing_n or_o of_o person_n god_n have_v or_o how_o we_o be_v look_v upon_o and_o justify_v in_o his_o sight_n in_o christ_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o what_o the_o state_n of_o person_n be_v or_o what_o thing_n and_o person_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v as_o they_o actual_o be_v or_o when_o they_o actual_o exist_v or_o in_o a_o proper_a sense_n and_o acceptation_n be_v another_o thing_n for_o dangerous_a it_o be_v for_o any_o to_o say_v that_o a_o wicked_a man_n whilst_o he_o be_v so_o be_v a_o object_n of_o god_n delight_n or_o that_o such_o a_o person_n be_v actual_o justify_v and_o that_o god_n be_v at_o peace_n and_o well_o please_v with_o he_o it_o be_v so_o direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n word_n and_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n the_o sum_n therefore_o of_o what_o i_o say_v and_o mean_a be_v this_o when_o i_o say_v god_n in_o christ_n be_v reconcile_v to_o sinner_n viz._n god_n have_v choose_v his_o elect_n in_o christ_n from_o eternity_n be_v reconcile_v to_o they_o in_o he_o as_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n of_o the_o procurement_n of_o their_o peace_n or_o of_o their_o recovery_n out_o of_o the_o fall_n or_o out_o of_o seem_v absurd_a and_o improper_a for_o how_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o this_o or_o that_o person_n before_o that_o person_n have_v any_o personal_a existency_n or_o be_v or_o if_o they_o have_v a_o be_v yet_o be_v enemy_n to_o he_o and_o loathsome_a wretch_n and_o under_o his_o denounce_v wrath_n and_o curse_v and_o in_o which_o state_n they_o remain_v before_o they_o be_v actual_o unite_v to_o christ_n or_o be_v effectual_o call_v yet_o take_v notice_n that_o that_o which_o actual_o reconcile_v the_o holy_a god_n to_o we_o be_v christ_n satisfaction_n alone_o to_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o addition_n make_v by_o any_o collateral_a work_n wrought_v in_o we_o and_o do_v by_o we_o we_o shall_v therefore_o distinguish_v between_o a_o foederal_n a_o virtual_a under_o the_o law_n therefore_o in_o vindication_n of_o the_o truth_n or_o veracity_n of_o god_n together_o with_o the_o honour_n equity_n and_o sanction_n of_o the_o law_n there_o must_v be_v satisfaction_n make_v or_o no_o peace_n with_o god_n for_o fall_v mankind_n and_o this_o can_v not_o be_v do_v but_o by_o such_o a_o mediator_n as_o jesus_n christ_n be_v for_o that_o which_o can_v not_o be_v do_v by_o man_n or_o angel_n nor_o as_o a_o simple_a act_n of_o god_n mercy_n without_o the_o impeachment_n of_o his_o holiness_n truth_n and_o justice_n etc._n etc._n can_v not_o be_v do_v at_o all_o but_o no_o pardon_n no_o peace_n can_v be_v procure_v by_o man_n nor_o angel_n nor_o as_o a_o absolute_a or_o simple_a act_n of_o mercy_n without_o the_o impeachment_n or_o eclipse_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n justice_n truth_n and_o holiness_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o it_o can_v not_o be_v so_o do_v at_o all_o 4._o to_o say_v god_n may_v have_v enter_v into_o a_o covenant_n of_o peace_n for_o we_o any_o other_o way_n than_o by_o the_o mediator_n jesus_n christ_n or_o through_o his_o death_n and_o atonement_n will_v as_o one_o observe_v reflect_v upon_o his_o love_n to_o his_o own_o dear_a son_n for_o why_o shall_v the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v make_v a_o curse_n for_o we_o or_o suffer_v the_o curse_a death_n of_o the_o cross_n to_o make_v our_o peace_n if_o peace_n can_v be_v make_v any_o other_o way_n without_o the_o least_o injury_n to_o the_o justice_n law_n or_o holiness_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n no_o doubt_v my_o brethren_n but_o that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n have_v be_v spare_v if_o he_o have_v foresee_v that_o our_o peace_n may_v have_v be_v make_v some_o other_o way_n moreover_o will_v it_o not_o then_o follow_v that_o there_o may_v have_v be_v two_o way_n to_o obtain_v peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o our_o bless_a lord_n say_v 14.6_o no_o man_n come_v to_o the_o father_n but_o by_o i_o that_o be_v can_v come_v to_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n any_o other_o way_n but_o by_o i_o by_o my_o death_n or_o through_o my_o blood_n nor_o without_o believe_v or_o depend_v upon_o i_o for_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o the_o adult_n 5._o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n of_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o therefore_o a_o necessity_n of_o christ_n mediation_n because_o without_o the_o shed_n of_o blood_n 9.22_o there_o be_v no_o remission_n no_o pardon_n and_o so_o no_o peace_n there_o can_v be_v no_o discharge_n from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n no_o removal_n of_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n nor_o any_o purgation_n from_o the_o filth_n and_o pollution_n thereof_o without_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v shed_v 6._o because_o it_o be_v positive_o say_v 4.12_o there_o be_v no_o other_o peace_n with_o god_n mediator_n 1._o a_o mediator_n of_o this_o covenant_n of_o peace_n must_v understand_v the_o nature_n of_o that_o difference_n or_o breach_n which_o be_v betwixt_o god_n and_o man_n and_o what_o term_n the_o holy_a god_n who_o be_v the_o injure_v party_n stand_v upon_o and_o must_v have_v grant_v he_o if_o ever_o our_o peace_n be_v make_v and_o who_o but_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v god_n know_v this_o it_o be_v he_o only_o that_o well_o know_v what_o it_o be_v that_o can_v satisfy_v infinite_a justice_n have_v it_o be_v propose_v either_o to_o man_n or_o angel_n to_o resolve_v this_o question_n i._n e._n by_o what_o mean_n shall_v fall_v man_n come_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o god_n be_v right_v as_o touch_v all_o that_o wrong_a sin_n and_o sinner_n have_v do_v he_o what_o answer_v think_v you_o can_v they_o have_v make_v alas_o no_o mere_a create_v be_v can_v resolve_v such_o a_o question_n 2._o he_o that_o be_v the_o mediator_n of_o this_o covenant_n or_o that_o make_v our_o peace_n must_v not_o only_o know_v what_o will_v do_v it_o but_o also_o he_o must_v be_v able_a to_o answer_v all_o god_n demand_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o law_n and_o justice_n and_o also_o be_v able_a to_o supply_v all_o our_o want_n and_o necessity_n he_o must_v seek_v the_o honour_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n and_o equal_o seek_v and_o be_v able_a to_o relieve_v poor_a sinner_n and_o none_o but_o jesus_n christ_n can_v do_v this_o who_o be_v a_o indifferent_a person_n or_o one_o equal_o relate_v unto_o both_o he_o be_v both_o god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n 1._o he_o be_v god_n the_o one_o and_o the_o same_o eternal_a god_n he_o can_v not_o know_v what_o concern_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o father_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o can_v not_o eclipse_v his_o glory_n 2._o and_o he_o be_v man_n he_o can_v not_o but_o sympathize_v with_o the_o poor_a creature_n and_o as_o be_v god_n he_o do_v not_o only_o know_v all_o our_o want_n but_o he_o be_v able_a also_o to_o supply_v they_o this_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o next_o particular_a iii_o covenant_n the_o mediator_n of_o this_o covenant_n must_v therefore_o be_v every_o way_n suitable_o qualify_v or_o capacitate_v for_o this_o work_n and_o mediatorship_n and_o to_o this_o end_n i_o say_v he_o must_v be_v god_n nay_o god_n in_o our_o nature_n for_o a_o mere_a man_n can_v not_o satisfy_v infinite_a justice_n his_o obedience_n or_o suffering_n else_o can_v not_o therefore_o have_v be_v meritorious_a for_o it_o be_v from_o the_o union_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n with_o the_o humane_a that_o put_v such_o a_o worth_n or_o meritorious_a efficacy_n in_o his_o sacrifice_n i_o say_v jesus_n christ_n our_o mediator_n must_v be_v god_n god_n 1._o because_o those_o evil_n which_o he_o be_v to_o expiate_v can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o by_o any_o person_n that_o be_v not_o god_n or_o who_o sacrifice_n or_o atonement_n have_v not_o a_o infinite_a worth_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o it_o because_o sin_n be_v against_o the_o infinite_a majesty_n of_o heaven_n 2._o jesus_n christ_n as_o mediator_n must_v be_v god_n because_o otherwise_o he_o can_v not_o
