peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or sâ—with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or lâ—â—â— words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world â—ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or â—â—â—ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or â—â—nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered

II. 1 He is exhorted again to constaney and
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
that to smell thereto shall even be cut off from his people CHAP. portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon XIII 1 They were not excused that worshipped any of Gods works 10 But most wretched are they that worship the works of mens â—ands SUrely vain are all men by nature who are ignorant of God and * Rom. 1.19 could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the work-master 2 * Deu. 4.19 17.3 But deemed either fire or wind or the swift air or the circle of the stars or the violent water or the lights of heaven to be the gods which govern the world 3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods let them know how much better the Lord of them is for the first authour of beauty hath created them 4 But if they were astonished at their power and vertue let them understand by them how much mightier he is that made them 5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen 6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed for they peradventure err seeking God and desirous to finde him 7 For being * Rom. 1.21 conversant in his works they ‖ Or seek search him diligently and beleeve their sight because the things are beautiful that are seen 8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned 9 For if they were able to know so much that they could aim at the world how did they not sooner finde out the Lord thereof 10 But miserable are they and in dead things is their hope who called them gods which are the works of mens hands gold and silver to shew art in and resemblances of beasts or a stone good for nothing the work of an ancient hand 11 * If. 44.13 Now a ‖ Or timber-wright carpenter that felleth â—â—mber after he hath sawen down a tree meet for the purpose and take â—â—â—ff all the bark skilfully round about and hath wrought it handsomely and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of mans life 12 And after spending the ‖ Or chipâ— refuse of his work to dress his meat hath filled himself 13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use being a crooked piece of wood and full of knots hath carved it diligently when he had nothing else to do and formed it by the skill of his understanding and fashioned it to the image of a man 14 Or made it like some vile beast laying it over with vermilion and with paint colouring it red and covering every spot therein 15 And when he had made a convenient room for it set it in a wall and made it fast with iron 16 For he provided for it that it might not fall knowing that it was unable to help it self for it is an image and hath need of help 17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods for his wife and children and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life 18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak for life prayeth to that which is dead for aid humbly beseecheth †Gr. that hath no experience at all that which hath least means

XVII 1 The transfiguration of Christ 14 He healeth the lunatick 22 foretelleth his own passion 24 and payeth tribute ANd * Mar. 9.2 Luk. 9.28 after six days Jesus taketh Peter James and John his brother and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart 2 And was transfigured before them and his face did shine as the sun and his raiment was white as the light 3 And behold there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him 4 Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus Lord it is good for us to be here if thou wilt let us make here three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 5 * 2 Pet. 1.17 While he yet spake behold a bright cloud overshadowed them and behold a voice out of the cloud which said This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased hear ye him 6 And when the disciples heard it they fell on their face and were sore afraid 7 And Jesus came touched them and said Arise and be not afraid 8 And when they had lift up their eyes they saw no man save Jesus onely 9 And as they came down from the mountain Jesus charged them saying Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead 10 And his disciples asked him saying * Ch. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them Elias truly shall first come and restore all things 12 But I say unto you that Elias is come already and they knew him not but have done unto him whatsoever they listed likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them 13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist 14 ¶ * Mar. 9.17 Luk. 9.38 And when they were come to the multitude there came to him a certain man kneeling down to him and saying 15 Lord have mercy on my son for he is lunatick and sore vexed for oft-times he falleth into the fire and oft into the water 16 And I brought him to thy disciples and they could not cure him 17 Then Jesus answered and said O faithless and perverse generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him hither to me 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil and he departed out of him and the childe was cured from that very hour 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said Why could not we cast him out 20 And Jesus said unto them Because of your unbelief for verily I say unto you * Luk. 17.6 If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed ye shall say unto this mountain Remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be unpossible unto you 21 Howbeit this kinde goeth not out but by prayer and fasting 22 ¶ * Ch. 20.17 Mar. 9.31 Luk. 9.44 And while they abode in Galilee Jesus said unto them The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men 23 And they shall kill him and the third day he shall be raised again and they were exceeding sorry 24 ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum they that received ‖ Called in the original didrachma being in value fifteen pence tribute money came to Peter and said Doth not your master pay tribute 25 He saith Yes And when he was come into the house Jesus prevented him saying What thinkest thou Simon of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute of their own children or of strangers 26 Peter saith unto him Of strangers Jesus saith unto him Then are the children free 27 Notwithstanding lest we should offend them go thou to the sea and cast an hook and take up the fish that first cometh up and when thou hast opened his mouth thou shalt finde ‖ Or a stater It is half an ounce of silver in value two shillings six pence after five shillings the ounce a piece of money that take and give unto them for me and thee CHAP. XVIII 1 Christ warneth his disciples to be humble and harmless 7 to avoid offences and not to despise the little ones 15 teacheth how we are to deal with our brethren when they offend us 21 and how oft to forgive them 23 which he setteth forth by a parable of the king that took account of his servants 32 and punished him who shewed no mercy to his fellow AT * Mar. 9. â—â— Luk. 9.46 the same time cause the disciples unto Jesus saying Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven 2 And Jesus called a little childe unto him and set him in the midst of them 3 And said Verily I say unto you * Ch. 19.14 1 Cor. 14.20 Except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little childe the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven 5 And whoso shall receive one such little childe in my name receiveth me 6 * Mar 9.42 Luke 17.1 2. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me it were better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea 7 ¶ Wo unto the world because of offences for it must needs be that offences come but wo to that man by whom the offence cometh 8 * Ch. 5.30 Mar. 9.45 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee cut them off and cast them from thee it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed rather then having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire 9 And if thine eye offend thee pluck it out and cast it from thee it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye rather then having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire 10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones for I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven 11 * Luke 19.10 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost 12 * Luk. 15.4 How think ye if a man have an hundred sheep and one of them be gone astray doth he not leave the ninety and nine and goeth into the mountains and seeketh that which is gone astray 13 And if so be that he finde it verily I say unto you he rejoyceth more of that sheep then of the ninety and nine which went not astray 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is
equal with God 7 But made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the ‖ Or habit likeness of men 8 And being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Chist is Lord to the glory of God the Father 12 Wherefore my beloved as ye have always obeyed not as in my presence onely but now much more in my absence work out your own salvation with fear and trembling 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings 15 That ye may be blameless and ‖ Or sincere harmless the sons of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation among whom ‖ Or â—â—ine ye ye shine as lights in the world 16 Holding forth the word of life that I may rejoyce in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain neither laboured in vain 17 Yea and if I be †Gr. poured forth offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith I joy and rejoyce with you all 18 For the same cause also do ye joy and rejoyce with me 19 ‖ Or Moreover But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state 20 For I have no man ‖ Or so dear unto me like-minded who will naturally care for your state 21 For all * 1 Cor. 10.24 seek their own not the things which are Jesus Christs 22 But ye know the proof of him that as a son with the Father he hath served with me in the gospel 23 Him therefore I hope to send presently so soon as I shall see how it will go with me 24 But I trust in the Lord that I also my self shall come shortly 25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and companion in labour and fellow-souldier but your messenger and he that ministred to my wants 26 For he longed after you all and was full of heaviness because that ye had heard that he had been sick 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death but God had mercy on him and not on him onely but on me also lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully that when ye see him again ye may rejoyce and that I may be the less sorrowful 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness and ‖ Or honour â—â—th hold such in reputation 30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death not regarding his life to supply your lack of service toward me CHAP. III. 1 He warneth them to beware of the false teachers of the circumcision 4 shewing that himself hath greater cause then they to trust in the righteousness of the law 7 which notwithstanding he counteth as dung loss to gain Christ and his righteousness 12 therein acknowledging his own imperfection 15 He exhorteth them to be thus minded 17 and to imitate him 18 and to decline the ways of carnal Christians FInally my brethren rejoyce in the Lord. To write the same things to you to me indeed is not grievous but for you it is safe 2 Beware of dogs beware of evil workers beware of the concision 3 For we are the circumcision which worship God in the spirit and rejoyce in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh I more 5 Circumcised the eighth day * 2 Cor. 11.22 of the stock of Israel of the tribe of Bâ—njamin an Hebrew of the Hebrews as touching the law * Act. 2â— 6 a Pharisee 6 Concerning zeal persecuting the church touching the righteousness which is in the law blameless 7 But what things were gain to me those I counted loss for Christ 8 Yea doubtless and I count all things bâ—t loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things do count them but dung that I may win Christ 9 And be found in him not having mine own righteousness which is of the law but that which is through the faith of Christ the righteousness which is of God by faith 10 That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings being made conformable unto his death 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead 12 Not as though I had already attained either were already perfect but I follow alter if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus 13 Brethren I count not my self to have apprehended but this one thing I do forgetting those things which are behinde and reaching forth unto those things which are before 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus 15 Let us therefore as many as be perfect be thus minded and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded God shall reveal even this unto you 16 Nevertheless whereto we have already attained let us walk by the same rule let us minde the same thing 17 Brethren be followers together of me and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample 18 For many walk of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ 19 Whos 's end is destruction whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame who minde earthly things 20 For our conversation is in heaven from whence also we * 1 Cor. 1.7 Tit. 2.13 look for the Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ 21 Who shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body according to the working whereby he is able even to sâ—bdue all things unto himself CHAP. IV. 1 From particular admonitions 4 he proceedeth to general exhortations 10 shewing how be rejoyced at their liberality towards him lying in prison not so much for the supply of his own wants as for the grace of God in them 19 and so he concludeth with prayer and salutations THerefore my brethren dearly beloved and longed for my joy and crown so stand fast in the Lord my dearly beloved 2 I beseech Euodias and beseech Syntyche that they be of the same minde in the Lord. 3 And I intreat thee also true yoke-fellow help those women which laboured
with me in the gospel with Clement also and with other my fellow-labourers whose names are in * Rev. 3.5 20.12 21.27 the book of life 4 Rejoyce in the Lord alway and again I say Rejoyce 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men The Lord is at hand 6 Be careful for nothing but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God 7 And the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus 8 Finally brethren whatsoever things are true whatsoever things are ‖ Or venerable honest whatsoever things are just whatsoever things are pure whatsoever things are lovely whatsoever things are of good report if there be any vertue and if there be any praise think on these things 9 Those things which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me do and the God of peace shall be with you 10 But I rejoyced in the Lord greatly that now at the last your care of me ‖ Or iâ— revived hath flourished again wherein ye were also careful but ye lacked opportunity 11 Not that I speak in respect of want for I have learned in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content 12 I know both how to be aâ—ased and I know how to abound every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry both to abound and to suffer need 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me 14 Notwithstanding ye have well done that ye did communicate with my affliction 15 Now ye Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel when I departed from Macedonia no church communicated with me as concerning giving and reâ—eiving but ye onely 16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once again unto my necessity 17 Not because I desire a gift but I desire fruit that may abound to your account 18 But ‖ Or I have received all I have all and abound I am full having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you an odour of a sweet smell a sacrifice acceptable well-pleasing to God 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus 20 Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever Amen 21 Salute every saint in Christ Jesus The brethren which are with me greet you 22 All the saints salute you chiefly they that are of Cesars houshold 23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all Amen ¶ It was written to the Philippians from Rome by Epaphroditus ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the COLOSSIANS CHAP. I. 1 After salutation he thanketh God for their faith 7 confirmeth the â—â—ctâ—â—ne of Epaâ—â—â—as 9 prayeth further for their increase in â—â—ace 14 descriâ—eth the true Christ 21 encourageth them tâ— receive Jesus Christ and commendeth his own ministery PAul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God and Timotheus our brother 2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which â—â—e at Câ—â—oâ—sâ— Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jâ—sâ—s Christ 3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ praying always for you 4 Since wâ— heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which ye have to all the saints 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel 6 Which is come unto you as it is in all the world and bringeth forth fruit as it doth also in you since the day ye heard of it and knew the grace of God in truth 7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellow-servant who is for you a faithful minister of Christ 8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit 9 For this cause we also since the day we heard it do not cease to pray for you and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God 11 Strengthened with all might according to his glorious power unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness 12 Giving thanks unto the Father which hath made us meet to be pâ—rtakers of the inhâ—ritance of the saints in light 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness and hath tranâ—lated us into the kingdom of †Gr. the Son of his love his dear Son 14 In whom we have redemption through his â—loud even the forgiveness of sins 15 Who is * Heb. 1. â— the image of the invisible God the first-born of every creature 16 For * Joh. 1.3 by him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth visible and invisible whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers all things were created by him and for him 17 * Joh. 1.3 1 Cor. 8. â— And he is before all things and by him all things consist 18 And he is the head of the body the church who is the beginning * 1 Cor. 15.20 Rev. 1.5 the first-born from the dead that ‖ Or among all in all things he might have the preeminence 19 For it preased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell 20 And ‖ Or making peace having made peace through the bloud of his cross by him to reconcile all things unto himself by him I say whether they be things in earth or things in heaven 21 And you that were sometime alienated and enemies ‖ Or by your minde in wicked workâ— in your minde by wicked works yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye have heard and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven whereof I Paul am made a minister 24 Who now rejoyce in my sufferings for you and fill up that which is behinde of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his bodies sake which is the Church 25 Whereof I am made a minister according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you ‖ Or fully to pâ—eath the word of God Rom. 15.19 to fulfil the word of God 26 Even * Rom. 16.25 Eph. 3.9 the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations but now is made manifest to his saints 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles which is Christ ‖ Or amongst you in you the hope of glory 28 Whom we preach warning every man and teaching
perseverance and to do the duty of a faithful servant of the Lord in dividing the word aright and staying profane and vain babblings 17 Of Hymeneus and Philetus 19 The foundation of the Lord is sure 22 He is taught whereof to beware and what to follow after and in what sort the servant of the Lord ought to behave himself THou therefore my son be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me ‖ Or by among many witnesses the same commit thou to faithful men who shall be able to reach others also 3 Thou therefore endure hardness as a good souldier of Jesus Christ 4 No man that warreth intangleth himself with the affairs of this life that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a souldier 5 And if a man also strive for masteries yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfully 6 ‖ Or The husbandman labouring first must be partaker of the fruits The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits 7 Consider what I say and the Lord give thee understanding in all things 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel 9 Wherein I suffer trouble as an evil-doer even unto bonds but the word of God is not bound 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elects sakes that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory 11 It is a faithful saying For * Rom. 6.5 8. if we be dead with him we shall also live with him 12 * Rom. 8.17 If we suffer we shall also reign with him * Matth. 10.33 Mark 8.38 if we deny him he also will deny us 13 * Rom. 3.3 If we beleeve not yet he abideth faithful he cannot deny himself 14 Of these things put them in remembrance charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit but to the subverting of the hearers 15 Study to shew thy self approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth 16 But shun profane and vain babblings for they will increase unto more ungodliness 17 And their word will eat as doth a ‖ Or gangrene canker of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus 18 Who concerning the truth have erred saying that the resurrection is past already and overthrow the faith of some 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth ‖ Or study sure having this seal The Lord knoweth them that are his And let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity 20 But in a great house there are not onely vessels of gold and of silver but also of wood and of earth * Roaâ— 9. â—â— and some to honour and some to dishonour 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these he shall be a vessel unto honour sanctified and meet for the masters use and prepared unto every good work 22 Flee also youthful lusts but follow righteousness faith charity peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart 23 But * 1 Tim. 1.4 Tit. 3.9 foolish and unlearned questions avoid knowing that they do gender strifes 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive but be gentle unto all men apt to teach ‖ Or forbearing patient 25 In meekness instucting those that oppose themselves if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth 26 And that they may †Gr. awake recover themselves out of the snare of the devil who are †Gr. taken alive taken captive by him at his will CHAP. III. 1 He advertiseth him of the times to â—ome 6 describeth the enemies of the truth 10 propoundeth unto him his own example 16 and commendeth the holy scriptures THis know also that * 1 Tim. 4 1. 2 Pet. 3.3 Jude 18. in the last days perilous times shall come 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves covetous boasters pround blasphemers disobedient to parents unthankful unholy 3 Without natural affection truce-breakers ‖ Or â—â—ake bates false accusers incontinent fierce despisers of those that are good 4 Traitours heady high-minded lovers of pleasures more then lovers of God 5 Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof from such turn away 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins led away with divers lusts 7 Ever learning and never able so come to the knowledge of the truth 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses so do these also resist the truth men of corrupt minds ‖ Or of nâ— judgment reprobate concerning the faith 9 But they shall proceed no further for their folly shall be manifest unto all men as theirs also was 10 But ‖ Or thou hast been a diligent follower of thou hast fully known my doctrine manner of life purpose faith long-suffering charity patience 11 Persecutions afflictions which came unto me at Antioch at Iconium at Lystra what persecutions I endured but out of them all the Lord delivered me 12 Yea and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse deceiving and being deceived 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of knowing of whom thou hast learned them 15 And that from a childe thou hast known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus 16 * 2 Pet. â— 21 All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness 17 That the man of God may be perfect ‖ Or perfected throughly furnished unto all good works CHAP. IV. 1 He exhorteth him to do his duty with all care and diligence 6 certifieth him of the nearness of his death 9 willeth him to come speedily unto him and to bring Marcus with him and certain other things which he wrote for 14 warneth him to beware of Alexander the smith 16 informeth him what had befaln him at his first answering 19 and soon after he concludeth I Charge thee therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ who shall judge the quick the dead at his appearing his kingdom 2 Preach the word be instant in season out of season reprove rebuke exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned unto tables 5 But watch thou in all things endure afflictions do the work of an evangelist ‖ Or fulfil make full proof of thy ministery 6 For I am now

X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c.
