but_o to_o the_o poor_a for_o so_o he_o call_v his_o people_n for_o he_o see_v the_o condition_n of_o his_o church_n to_o be_v such_o that_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o the_o riches_n and_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n it_o only_o hunger_v &_o thirst_v the_o poverty_n of_o the_o levite_n be_v exceed_v great_a until_o they_o aspire_v to_o honour_n and_o dignity_n as_o also_o our_o prelate_n do_v for_o satan_n so_o rule_v in_o these_o matter_n that_o he_o never_o cease_v to_o oppress_v the_o ministry_n as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v with_o poverty_n and_o contempt_n this_o many_o not_o content_v to_o bear_v do_v fall_v so_o far_o that_o rather_o than_o they_o will_v lack_v they_o will_v teach_v the_o thing_n that_o please_v man_n that_o so_o they_o may_v attain_v to_o wealth_n and_o dignity_n the_o godly_a must_v therefore_o hold_v fast_o this_o promise_n that_o the_o lord_n say_v he_o will_v give_v bread_n unto_o his_o poor_a for_o both_o these_o thing_n shall_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o shall_v have_v bread_n and_o yet_o they_o shall_v be_v poor_a and_o why_o because_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n let_v those_o therefore_o which_o be_v of_o the_o ministry_n and_o be_v the_o principal_a part_n of_o this_o kingdom_n be_v content_a to_o suffer_v reproach_n hatred_n and_o contempt_n or_o else_o let_v they_o be_v no_o minister_n for_o the_o inheritance_n of_o this_o world_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o the_o godly_a but_o the_o assure_a and_o everlasting_a inhertiance_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v wherefore_o christ_n call_v the_o poor_a glory_n which_o we_o enjoy_v at_o this_o day_n by_o the_o word_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n i_o will_v humble_o have_v cast_v down_o myself_o prostrate_a upon_o the_o ground_n &_o give_v my_o life_n glad_o for_o this_o only_a quietness_n and_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n in_o christ._n but_o now_o when_o we_o be_v clothe_v in_o deed_n with_o salvation_n through_o great_a and_o assure_a promise_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o eternal_a life_n we_o forget_v these_o spiritual_a riches_n and_o we_o complain_v that_o we_o be_v not_o make_v king_n and_o prince_n in_o this_o be_v offend_v with_o this_o external_a poverty_n and_o not_o to_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v rather_o in_o these_o inestimable_a treasure_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o will_v not_o rather_o have_v these_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n beg_v his_o bread_n from_o door_n to_o door_n then_o enjoy_v the_o riches_n and_o treasure_n of_o all_o the_o prelate_n and_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n of_o the_o pope_n who_o we_o see_v in_o this_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n because_o they_o be_v enemy_n to_o the_o word_n to_o be_v most_o desperate_a and_o damnable_a for_o they_o be_v without_o remission_n of_o sin_n hope_v of_o eternal_a life_n the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o all_o the_o heavenly_a benefit_n and_o blessing_n which_o we_o by_o the_o word_n do_v so_o plentiful_o enjoy_v wherefore_o if_o we_o be_v never_o so_o poor_a afflict_a vex_a full_a of_o anguish_n and_o heaviness_n contemptible_a and_o abominable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o world_n yet_o let_v we_o comfort_v ourselves_o with_o this_o that_o we_o have_v the_o treasure_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n that_o by_o faith_n in_o the_o word_n we_o shall_v have_v the_o victory_n over_o sin_n death_n and_o hell_n and_o that_o watch_v when_o we_o sleep_v if_o he_o be_v not_o careful_a for_o we_o when_o we_o be_v careless_a we_o shall_v perish_v every_o moment_n we_o shall_v lose_v our_o tongue_n our_o eye_n our_o ear_n our_o hand_n our_o foot_n and_o our_o life_n also_o and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o these_o thing_n do_v many_o time_n chance_n and_o when_o we_o little_a doubt_n or_o think_v thereof_o our_o wife_n our_o child_n or_o our_o friend_n die_v or_o else_o fall_v into_o some_o great_a danger_n it_o be_v a_o minifest_z token_n that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o death_n and_o sin_n in_o this_o kingdom_n because_o we_o live_v while_o we_o be_v in_o this_o world_n hereof_o it_o come_v that_o we_o often_o time_n offend_v and_o fall_v into_o many_o sin_n thus_o david_n become_v both_o a_o adulterer_n and_o a_o murderer_n so_o that_o hereby_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o this_o world_n be_v to_o advance_v sin_n to_o murder_v &_o destroy_v now_o therefore_o that_o we_o yet_o live_v and_o breath_n that_o we_o fall_v not_o daily_o into_o grievous_a and_o horrible_a sin_n it_o be_v the_o great_a mercy_n goodness_n and_o
this_o distinction_n be_v not_o so_o well_o know_v by_o practice_n as_o it_o be_v by_o speculation_n practice_v for_o if_o we_o have_v this_o practice_n in_o deed_n we_o shall_v right_o discern_v between_o the_o law_n &_o the_o gospel_n also_o between_o the_o disciple_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n &_o beat_v back_o satan_n with_o this_o answer_n that_o like_o a_o lie_a spirit_n he_o seek_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o blind_a and_o deceive_v the_o heart_n with_o falsehood_n and_o lie_n for_o whereas_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n be_v those_o he_o do_v not_o kill_v or_o terrify_v but_o flatter_v and_o fill_v they_o with_o hope_n &_o fair_a promise_n which_o do_v not_o pertain_v to_o such_o heart_n contrariwise_o where_o as_o such_o tender_a and_o timorous_a heart_n be_v as_o be_v to_o much_o terrify_v already_o and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v confirm_v &_o raise_v up_o with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o heart_n satan_n most_o of_o all_o not_o only_o go_v about_o further_o to_o afflict_v and_o terrify_v but_o to_o beat_v they_o down_o also_o to_o utter_v discomfort_n wherefore_o the_o christian_a man_n must_v learn_v and_o labour_n by_o feeling_n and_o practice_n to_o make_v this_o distinction_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o satan_n away_o from_o i_o satan_n with_o thy_o lie_n when_o i_o be_o void_a of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n secure_a and_o hard_a heart_a then_o come_v and_o plead_v the_o law_n against_o i_o then_o will_v i_o hear_v thou_o for_o then_o that_o be_v the_o time_n to_o teach_v the_o law_n but_o since_o comfort_v we_o wherefore_o we_o must_v earnest_o endeavour_n to_o learn_v this_o practice_n or_o at_o the_o least_o to_o attain_v to_o some_o knowledge_n thereof_o and_o raise_v up_o ourselves_o with_o these_o word_n that_o the_o gospel_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o laughter_n and_o joy_n which_o proper_o pertain_v to_o the_o captive_n that_o be_v to_o those_o that_o feel_v the_o captivity_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n to_o the_o fleshy_a and_o tender_a heart_n terrify_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n of_o god_n these_o be_v the_o disciple_n in_o who_o heart_n exhortation_n to_o perseverance_n and_o patience_n for_o this_o experience_n of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n must_v be_v join_v with_o doctrine_n &_o exhâ—â—â—â—tion_n for_o our_o sight_n be_v so_o dim_a that_o we_o can_v not_o see_v these_o inviâ—â—â—â—â—_n thing_n and_o the_o end_n of_o affliction_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n ever_o sâ—â—keth_v mean_n how_o it_o may_v be_v deliver_v and_o beginning_n of_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n but_o the_o end_n thereof_o it_o can_v not_o see_v therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o amplify_v and_o enlarge_v the_o matter_n that_o the_o exhortation_n may_v be_v the_o more_o effectual_a and_o here_o be_v first_o to_o be_v note_v that_o if_o the_o contrary_n be_v not_o that_o be_v to_o say_v no_o tentation_n feel_v or_o peril_n to_o be_v fear_v then_o be_v this_o exhortation_n but_o in_o vain_a for_o if_o tentation_n shall_v have_v a_o end_n as_o soon_o as_o it_o begin_v or_o if_o as_o soon_o as_o we_o feel_v any_o lack_n god_n succour_n thus_o if_o we_o do_v then_o begin_v we_o to_o contemn_v that_o which_o to_o we_o before_o seem_v so_o huge_a and_o terrible_a then_o the_o word_n &_o promise_n begin_v to_o kindle_v in_o testimony_n for_o it_o speak_v of_o thing_n absent_a and_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o preach_n of_o faith_n this_o i_o speak_v for_o the_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a concern_v this_o word_n testify_v this_o be_v the_o cause_n then_o why_o david_n so_o rejoice_v namely_o that_o his_o jerusalem_n be_v build_v to_o this_o end_n that_o the_o word_n of_o faith_n may_v there_o be_v preach_v whereby_o the_o people_n may_v learn_v to_o know_v what_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v what_o he_o intend_v to_o do_v with_o his_o people_n what_o punishment_n and_o plague_n he_o threaten_v to_o the_o wicked_a and_o this_o preach_n be_v the_o testimony_n which_o david_n here_o speak_v of_o make_v unto_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n gather_v together_o in_o this_o place_n whereby_o they_o be_v know_v to_o be_v the_o peculiar_a and_o choose_a people_n of_o god_n from_o all_o other_o nation_n as_o he_o say_v in_o a_o other_o psalm_n he_o have_v not_o so_o deal_v with_o every_o nation_n wherefore_o we_o also_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o acknowledge_v the_o rich_a blessing_n of_o god_n that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v now_o pure_o &_o sincere_o preach_v amongst_o we_o as_o it_o be_v then_o in_o jerusalem_n and_o the_o sweet_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n sound_v in_o the_o ear_n &_o conscience_n of_o the_o godly_a to_o their_o singular_a comfort_n and_o consolation_n also_o the_o threaten_n of_o god_n publish_v whereby_o the_o wicked_a be_v call_v to_o repentance_n and_o the_o godly_a keep_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o old_a man_n through_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o the_o father_n through_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n sake_n pour_v upon_o they_o abundant_o which_o willing_o and_o glad_o receive_v this_o testimony_n this_o be_v one_o part_n then_o of_o the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n to_o learn_v the_o way_n how_o to_o worship_v god_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o best_o please_v he_o which_o consist_v in_o teach_v of_o the_o word_n &_o hear_n of_o god_n when_o he_o speak_v unto_o we_o by_o his_o witness_n and_o therefore_o the_o devil_n desire_v nothing_o so_o much_o as_o to_o hinder_v the_o preach_v &_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n for_o this_o cause_n he_o raise_v up_o as_o you_o hear_v in_o the_o first_o psalm_n lie_v lip_n and_o deceitful_a tongue_n he_o stir_v up_o the_o world_n with_o sword_n and_o power_n to_o oppress_v the_o godly_a and_o even_o in_o ourselves_o he_o go_v about_o to_o deface_v this_o kind_n of_o service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n by_o our_o devilish_a contempt_n and_o loathe_n of_o the_o same_o but_o contrariwise_o to_o build_v church_n and_o gorgeous_o to_o deck_v they_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o mass_n oblation_n false_a worship_n and_o idolatry_n all_o this_o he_o can_v abide_v well_o enough_o for_o by_o these_o thing_n he_o know_v that_o his_o strength_n be_v not_o diminish_v nor_o his_o power_n weaken_v but_o when_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v concern_v remission_n of_o sin_n the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o christ_n and_o life_n everlasting_a this_o doctrine_n destroy_v his_o kingdom_n this_o cause_v he_o to_o rage_n and_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a how_o he_o may_v hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v to_o praise_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n word_n this_o david_n make_v the_o second_o kind_n of_o worship_n when_o he_o commend_v his_o jerusalem_n and_o here_o again_o note_v that_o he_o speak_v nothing_o of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o law_n for_o albeit_o he_o do_v not_o discommend_v they_o as_o i_o say_v before_o yet_o he_o reckon_v they_o but_o as_o chaff_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o fruit_n which_o follow_v thereof_o which_o be_v thank_n give_v and_o if_o he_o have_v name_v the_o sley_a of_o sacrifice_n every_o man_n have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o serve_v god_n with_o that_o kind_n of_o worship_n therefore_o he_o require_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v without_o great_a charge_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o very_o few_o do_v he_o do_v not_o condemn_v the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o afterward_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o son_n solomon_n but_o do_v earnest_o desire_v the_o same_o and_o the_o cause_n why_o he_o do_v desire_v it_o here_o you_o see_v namely_o that_o first_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v there_o be_v preach_v and_o then_o that_o god_n may_v there_o accept_v the_o prayer_n of_o his_o people_n with_o praise_n and_o thank_n give_v for_o his_o benefit_n receive_v hitherto_o we_o have_v hear_v how_o the_o prophet_n extol_v and_o magnify_v the_o incomparable_a gift_n &_o benefit_n of_o god_n the_o word_n i_o mean_v with_o thank_n and_o praise_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o same_o for_o that_o be_v a_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n in_o deed_n which_o be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v so_o to_o be_v all_o the_o world_n as_o we_o see_v be_v full_a &_o even_o glut_v with_o the_o benefit_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o it_o remain_v still_o in_o such_o blindness_n that_o it_o know_v they_o not_o to_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o take_v and_o use_v they_o not_o otherwise_o then_o hog_n do_v their_o draff_n &_o swill_n but_o david_n see_v that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o a_o kingdom_n wherein_o the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n and_o true_a religion_n flourish_v this_o great_a benefit_n he_o acknowledge_v and_o therefore_o he_o so_o rejoice_v and_o magnify_v his_o jerusalem_n as_o a_o place_n appoint_v by_o the_o lords_z own_o mouth_n where_o the_o people_n may_v come_v together_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o to_o give_v thanks_n unto_o god_n for_o his_o benefit_n out_o of_o the_o which_o place_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o find_v god_n the_o gentile_n because_o they_o have_v not_o the_o word_n nor_o this_o hear_n whereof_o david_n here_o speak_v can_v not_o find_v god_n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v how_o horrible_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o contemn_v and_o to_o loathe_v the_o word_n for_o what_o can_v be_v more_o horrible_a than_o that_o man_n a_o weak_a creature_n nothing_o but_o earth_n &_o dust_n shall_v so_o lift_v up_o himself_o in_o pride_n that_o when_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n speak_v &_o most_o love_o invite_v he_o to_o hear_v he_o will_v not_o hear_v and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o common_a than_o this_o impiety_n this_o horrible_a contempt_n this_o devilish_a loathe_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n amongst_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n the_o cause_n be_v for_o that_o we_o hear_v not_o the_o lord_n speak_v now_o unto_o we_o in_o his_o majesty_n as_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o mount_v sinai_n at_o what_o time_n the_o people_n be_v astonish_v &_o tremble_v at_o the_o terrible_a voice_n of_o the_o lord_n &_o yet_o how_o soon_o have_v they_o forget_v the_o lord_n and_o murmur_v both_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o against_o moses_n thus_o in_o his_o majesty_n he_o speak_v no_o more_o but_o he_o speak_v now_o unto_o we_o by_o man_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v contemn_v horrible_a it_o be_v that_o sodom_n be_v burn_v up_o with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n horrible_a it_o be_v also_o that_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v destroy_v with_o water_n moreover_o the_o daily_a example_n of_o impiety_n and_o wickedness_n as_o murder_v whoredom_n etc_n etc_n be_v such_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v hear_v without_o horror_n &_o tremble_a but_o how_o horrible_a so_o ever_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v yet_o be_v it_o much_o more_o horrible_a to_o contemn_v god_n when_o by_o his_o word_n he_o speak_v unto_o we_o which_o all_o the_o world_n do_v at_o this_o day_n not_o only_o they_o which_o persecute_v the_o word_n with_o open_a tyranny_n but_o such_o also_o as_o be_v even_o amongst_o we_o &_o at_o the_o beginning_n seem_v to_o receive_v this_o doctrine_n with_o great_a rejoice_v wherefore_o david_n exhort_v
god_n that_o we_o shall_v suffer_v trouble_n and_o affliction_n yet_o in_o he_o we_o shall_v overcome_v at_o length_n the_o 125._o psalm_n they_o that_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n etc_n etc_n the_o psalm_n go_v before_o be_v a_o thanksgiving_n or_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o praise_n psalm_n because_o the_o godly_a see_v and_o by_o experience_n feel_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v faithful_a and_o help_v they_o in_o the_o time_n of_o need_n this_o psalm_n follow_v contain_v also_o in_o a_o manner_n the_o same_o matter_n for_o it_o pertain_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n and_o exhort_v the_o faithful_a likewise_o to_o a_o sure_a trust_n and_o affiance_n in_o the_o help_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o their_o necessity_n whereunto_o he_o stir_v they_o up_o with_o great_a and_o excellent_a promise_n it_o may_v also_o be_v easy_o understand_v by_o that_o which_o we_o have_v say_v before_o for_o herein_o consist_v all_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n that_o we_o do_v utter_o remove_v out_o of_o our_o sight_n what_o so_o ever_o flesh_n can_v comprehend_v and_o believe_v that_o which_o the_o word_n only_o tell_v we_o even_o against_o all_o that_o which_o either_o we_o know_v feel_v or_o see_v and_o therefore_o this_o wisdom_n be_v against_o all_o humane_a wisdom_n and_o reason_n for_o by_o reason_n and_o all_o that_o reason_n can_v comprehend_v we_o feel_v see_v and_o conceive_v all_o thing_n contrary_a to_o that_o which_o faith_n lead_v we_o unto_o he_o that_o lie_v sick_a and_o at_o the_o point_n of_o death_n can_v by_o reason_n conceive_v nothing_o else_o but_o y_fw-fr imagination_n of_o death_n but_o a_o christian_n man_n leave_v that_o imagination_n know_v that_o in_o death_n there_o be_v true_a life_n but_o thou_o will_v say_v he_o see_v and_o feel_v death_n in_o deed_n but_o life_n he_o can_v not_o feel_v i_o answer_v that_o because_o he_o rest_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o after_o it_o he_o judge_v and_o not_o after_o his_o own_o feel_n therefore_o even_o in_o death_n he_o see_v nothing_o but_o life_n and_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o darkness_n most_o clear_a light_n word_n for_o like_a as_o god_n make_v all_o thing_n of_o nothing_o and_o of_o darkness_n light_n so_o he_o work_v by_o his_o word_n that_o in_o death_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o life_n they_o then_o which_o stick_n to_o the_o word_n and_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o follow_v the_o same_o do_v find_v it_o true_a which_o david_n say_v 33._o he_o speak_v the_o word_n and_o it_o be_v do_v etc_n etc_n but_o before_o we_o can_v come_v to_o this_o experience_n we_o must_v abide_v some_o trouble_n &_o therefore_o have_v need_n of_o such_o exhortation_n as_o this_o psalm_n here_o set_v forth_o verse_n 1._o they_o that_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v as_o mount_n zion_n which_o can_v not_o be_v remove_v but_o remain_v for_o ever_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o a_o similitude_n of_o mount_n zion_n because_o jerusalem_n wherein_o zion_n stand_v when_o the_o temple_n be_v build_v have_v most_o ample_a &_o notable_a promise_n of_o god_n as_o appear_v in_o very_a many_o place_n of_o the_o prophet_n that_o it_o shall_v stand_v sure_a &_o invincible_a for_o ever_o against_o all_o trouble_n and_o calamity_n for_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v his_o abide_n and_o dwell_v there_o according_a to_o that_o promise_n where_o he_o say_v here_o be_v my_o rest_n here_o will_v i_o dwell_v etc_n etc_n and_o therefore_o david_n in_o a_o other_o psalm_n glory_v on_o this_o wise_a 48._o loe_o the_o king_n be_v gather_v and_o go_v together_o when_o they_o see_v it_o they_o marvel_v they_o be_v astonish_v and_o sudden_o drive_v back_o as_o we_o may_v see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v under_o ezechias_n in_o that_o great_a destruction_n of_o the_o assyrian_n and_o other_o king_n as_o the_o story_n witness_v which_o show_v that_o jerusalem_n remain_v safe_a in_o all_o danger_n not_o by_o the_o strength_n and_o policy_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n but_o by_o the_o miraculous_a work_n of_o god_n dwell_v in_o it_o and_o thus_o mighty_o preserve_v and_o beautify_v his_o own_o common_a wealth_n now_o therefore_o say_v he_o like_z as_z mount_n zion_n and_o our_o holy_a city_n jerusalem_n be_v never_o move_v but_o remain_v sure_a and_o safe_a by_o the_o mighty_a protection_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o extremity_n so_o he_o that_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v defend_v devise_v as_o a_o high_a service_n unto_o god_n and_o thereby_o think_v to_o make_v condign_a satisfaction_n for_o sin_n and_o merit_v eternal_a life_n but_o simple_o he_o lead_v we_o the_o plain_a way_n unto_o god_n pronounce_v this_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a anchor_n of_o our_o salvation_n only_o to_o hope_v and_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n he_o and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o great_a service_n that_o we_o can_v do_v unto_o god_n for_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o god_n as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o create_v all_o thing_n of_o nothing_o therefore_o he_o create_v and_o bring_v forth_o in_o death_n life_n in_o darkness_n light_n and_o this_o to_o believe_v be_v the_o very_a nature_n and_o most_o special_a property_n of_o faith_n when_o god_n then_o see_v such_o a_o one_o as_o agree_v with_o his_o own_o nature_n faith_n that_o be_v which_o believe_v to_o find_v in_o danger_n help_v in_o poverty_n riches_n in_o sin_n righteousness_n and_o that_o for_o god_n own_o mercy_n sake_n in_o christ_n alone_o he_o can_v god_n neither_o hate_n nor_o forsake_v for_o he_o serve_v and_o worship_v god_n true_o which_o put_v his_o whole_a trust_n in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n with_o this_o service_n god_n be_v high_o please_v because_o he_o delight_v of_o no_o thing_n to_o make_v some_o thing_n so_o he_o make_v the_o world_n of_o nothing_o so_o he_o raise_v up_o the_o poor_a and_o he_o help_v not_o in_o his_o good_a time_n take_v i_o and_o david_n also_o for_o liar_n satan_n will_v trouble_v vex_v and_o discomfort_v thou_o yea_o and_o peradventure_o make_v thou_o to_o believe_v that_o thou_o be_v utter_o forsake_v but_o if_o thou_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n thou_o shall_v feel_v his_o help_n with_o joyful_a victory_n so_o in_o the_o council_n of_o auspurge_n when_o the_o prince_n be_v bend_v against_o we_o with_o one_o consent_n our_o cause_n seem_v to_o be_v utter_o overthrow_v notwithstanding_o yet_o we_o live_v and_o enjoy_v such_o peace_n and_o liberty_n as_o we_o will_v wish_v maugre_o the_o rage_n and_o malice_n of_o the_o pope_n and_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o world_n with_o such_o conflict_n we_o must_v be_v exercise_v lest_o we_o be_v discourage_v trust_v in_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v as_o mount_n zion_n which_o can_v not_o be_v remove_v but_o remain_v for_o ever_o and_o here_o we_o have_v a_o singular_a promise_n whereby_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o we_o shall_v stand_v and_o abide_v for_o ever_o if_o then_o we_o do_v not_o continue_v it_o be_v our_o own_o fault_n because_o we_o abide_v not_o firm_a and_o stable_a in_o our_o faith_n for_o this_o promise_n must_v needs_o remain_v sure_a and_o infallible_a yea_o as_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o god_n shall_v deny_v himself_o and_o not_o be_v god_n so_o be_v it_o impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v forsake_v those_o that_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o he_o but_o we_o may_v not_o think_v the_o time_n long_o but_o patient_o abide_v the_o lord_n leisure_n for_o god_n
flesh_n although_o they_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o such_o high_a and_o mighty_a mountain_n as_o touch_v the_o spirit_n as_o satan_n can_v never_o surmount_v yet_o touch_v the_o flesh_n and_o the_o old_a man_n they_o lie_v open_a on_o every_o side_n to_o the_o dart_n of_o satan_n and_o of_o the_o world_n for_o god_n by_o these_o mean_n will_v afflict_v and_o exercise_v the_o flesh_n that_o sin_n &_o the_o foolishness_n of_o the_o flesh_n may_v be_v mortify_v in_o they_o and_o that_o spiritual_a wisdom_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n may_v increase_v this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o we_o be_v according_a to_o the_o flesh_n as_o a_o break_a hedge_n and_o as_o a_o city_n who_o wall_n be_v cast_v down_o and_o so_o lie_v open_a to_o the_o enemy_n on_o every_o side_n wherefore_o there_o be_v no_o sort_n of_o man_n so_o vile_a and_o abject_a which_o do_v not_o think_v that_o they_o may_v do_v what_o they_o listen_v against_o the_o true_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n hereof_o come_v such_o intolerable_a injury_n horrible_a blasphemy_n cruel_a torment_n and_o bloody_a slaughter_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n for_o the_o flesh_n have_v no_o wall_n no_o munition_n to_o defend_v it_o but_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o all_o storm_n and_o tempest_n break_a &_o tread_v down_o of_o the_o wicked_a as_o isaiah_n say_v chap._n 51._o which_o have_v say_v unto_o thy_o soul_n bow_v down_o that_o we_o may_v go_v over_o thou_o have_v lay_v thy_o body_n as_o the_o ground_n and_o as_o the_o street_n to_o they_o that_o go_v over_o these_o affliction_n we_o must_v needs_o suffer_v and_o by_o patience_n overcome_v they_o &_o withal_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o by_o these_o outward_a affliction_n the_o inward_a man_n be_v not_o weaken_v or_o overcome_v rest_v in_o this_o assure_a hope_n and_o trust_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v never_o forsake_v we_o but_o that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o father_n and_o be_v close_v within_o most_o sure_a and_o strong_a hold_n so_o that_o now_o although_o our_o good_n our_o wife_n our_o child_n yea_o and_o our_o life_n also_o be_v take_v from_o we_o yet_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v spoil_v of_o our_o christ_n by_o who_o we_o be_v so_o sure_o defend_v that_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o all_o our_o tentation_n he_o will_v make_v away_o for_o we_o to_o escape_v or_o else_o geve_v we_o strength_n to_o bear_v they_o thus_o we_o see_v what_o consolation_n the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o unto_o they_o which_o believe_v the_o word_n for_o unto_o such_o as_o look_v for_o a_o better_a life_n than_o this_o all_o thing_n be_v here_o full_a of_o calamity_n and_o misery_n death_n follow_v death_n as_o paul_n say_v and_o we_o continual_o die_v one_o tentation_n follow_v a_o other_o until_o at_o the_o length_n by_o the_o death_n of_o the_o flesh_n all_o misery_n shall_v cease_v and_o have_v a_o end_n this_o verse_n therefore_o make_v much_o for_o our_o comfort_n admonish_v we_o that_o we_o must_v suffer_v many_o trouble_n yet_o so_o that_o at_o the_o length_n we_o shall_v be_v safe_a and_o set_v at_o liberty_n from_o they_o all_o though_o not_o in_o this_o life_n yet_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o in_o eternal_a life_n and_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o thus_o bold_o promise_v unto_o ourselves_o remain_v under_o this_o diligent_a custody_n of_o the_o angel_n yea_o of_o the_o lord_n himself_o which_o be_v always_o round_o about_o his_o people_n but_o here_o as_o before_o i_o say_v we_o have_v need_n of_o faith_n that_o we_o may_v judge_v herein_o not_o according_a to_o our_o present_a trouble_n and_o tentation_n but_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o promise_n and_o what_o shall_v we_o need_v any_o promise_n if_o there_o be_v no_o tentation_n which_o tentation_n whether_o they_o be_v within_o in_o the_o spirit_n or_o without_o in_o the_o flesh_n the_o time_n shall_v come_v when_o we_o through_o christ_n shall_v have_v full_a victory_n hereof_o as_o this_o verse_n full_a of_o sweet_a consolation_n do_v promise_n unto_o us._n notwithstanding_o this_o promise_n seem_v incredible_a both_o to_o we_o which_o suffer_v and_o also_o to_o they_o which_o persecute_v and_o afflict_v we_o for_o if_o we_o behold_v the_o same_o with_o our_o outward_a eye_n what_o can_v be_v more_o false_a yea_o the_o contrary_n seem_v to_o be_v most_o true_a behold_v our_o saviour_n christ_n be_v he_o not_o so_o forsake_v hang_v upon_o the_o cross_n that_o the_o rod_n or_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a rest_v upon_o he_o do_v it_o not_o rest_v likewise_o upon_o the_o prophet_n the_o apostle_n and_o other_o holy_a martyr_n this_o matter_n then_o if_o we_o consider_v it_o with_o our_o outward_a eye_n have_v a_o other_o meaning_n then_o the_o word_n do_v import_v for_o they_o promise_v that_o the_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v have_v no_o power_n over_o the_o godly_a and_o yet_o all_o story_n and_o example_n do_v testify_v the_o contrary_n therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n call_v we_o back_o to_o the_o purpose_n &_o counsel_n of_o god_n reveil_v in_o his_o word_n and_o command_v we_o to_o weigh_v and_o consider_v not_o what_o we_o suffer_v and_o with_o our_o outward_a eye_n behold_v but_o what_o be_v decree_v with_o the_o lord_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o that_o can_v so_o sequester_n himself_o from_o the_o behold_n of_o his_o affliction_n and_o tentation_n and_o yield_v himself_o whole_o over_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n &_o there_o rest_n be_v a_o right_n divine_a yea_o he_o that_o be_v ignorant_a hereof_o in_o true_a divinity_n know_v nothing_o at_o al._n for_o what_o know_v he_o which_o be_v ignorant_a that_o god_n be_v such_o a_o god_n as_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o godly_a to_o be_v oppress_v of_o the_o wicked_a for_o see_v he_o have_v say_v i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n he_o will_v never_o suffer_v that_o which_o be_v his_o own_o to_o be_v wrest_v either_o by_o the_o world_n or_o by_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n out_o of_o his_o hand_n if_o he_o then_o abide_v and_o continue_v they_o shall_v also_o continue_v for_o ever_o which_o be_v he_o thus_o to_o believe_v and_o thus_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o thing_n invisible_a be_v true_a divinity_n and_o true_a spiritual_a wisdom_n in_o deed_n whereupon_o we_o may_v ground_v this_o proposition_n out_o of_o the_o invisible_a counsel_n of_o god_n god_n hate_v the_o wicked_a &_o love_v the_o just_a ergo_fw-la he_o will_v damn_v and_o destroy_v the_o wicked_a and_o will_v deliver_v and_o save_v the_o just_a and_o here_o we_o see_v that_o which_o be_v the_o chief_a thing_n in_o all_o the_o psalm_n and_o prophet_n to_o spring_v out_o of_o the_o first_o precept_n i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god._n now_o have_v we_o to_o learn_v how_o we_o may_v apply_v this_o verse_n right_o and_o to_o our_o comfort_n for_o true_a divinity_n consist_v in_o use_n and_o practice_v we_o be_v vex_v on_o every_o side_n with_o cruel_a bishop_n wicked_a prince_n and_o other_o which_o hate_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o doctrine_n which_o we_o profess_v but_o these_o be_v very_a trifle_n if_o you_o compare_v they_o with_o those_o vexation_n which_o satan_n sin_n and_o our_o own_o infirmity_n raise_v up_o in_o our_o conscience_n we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o thus_o to_o judge_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n that_o they_o be_v the_o rod_n or_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o to_o set_v the_o lord_n against_o they_o reveal_v his_o will_n here_o in_o his_o word_n and_o pronounce_v that_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o rest_v upon_o the_o godly_a see_v then_o the_o same_o prince_n promise_v thus_o much_o unto_o we_o which_o have_v all_o thing_n in_o his_o hand_n what_o can_v we_o require_v more_o for_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v certain_a that_o though_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o will_v he_o not_o see_v we_o tread_v under_o foot_n or_o perish_v thus_o must_v we_o apply_v these_o sweet_a consolation_n what_o the_o rod_n signify_v in_o the_o scripture_n it_o be_v well_o know_v children_n when_o they_o be_v young_a be_v correct_v with_o a_o rod_n &_o when_o like_a since_o it_o grow_v not_o as_o other_o thing_n do_v upon_o the_o earth_n but_o in_o a_o high_a and_o more_o notable_a place_n &_o load_v the_o top_n of_o the_o house_n but_o take_v a_o man_n that_o know_v these_o thing_n and_o he_o will_v say_v it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o goodly_a show_n &_o resemblance_n without_o any_o fruit_n thus_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n choose_v this_o similitude_n to_o teach_v we_o not_o to_o wish_v that_o tyrant_n may_v be_v like_o grass_n but_o to_o know_v that_o they_o be_v in_o deed_n most_o like_a unto_o grass_n on_o the_o house_n top_n which_o wither_v away_o before_o the_o harvest_n time_n come_v or_o any_o man_n go_v about_o to_o cut_v it_o down_o senacherib_n who_o besiege_v jerusalem_n do_v fly_v over_o kingdom_n oppress_v &_o under_o foot_n like_o mire_n in_o the_o street_n this_o be_v a_o resemblance_n of_o grass_n not_o wither_v but_o fresh_o flourish_v but_o how_o quick_o do_v it_o wither_v and_o vanish_v to_o nothing_o for_o when_o pharaoh_n do_v very_o think_v to_o oppress_v they_o he_o be_v sudden_o oppress_v himself_o and_o perish_v in_o the_o water_n such_o a_o image_n of_o tyrant_n and_o tyranny_n the_o holy_a and_o a_o violent_a tempest_n not_o to_o a_o mighty_a black_a cloud_n wrap_v all_o thing_n in_o darkness_n but_o unto_o a_o very_a little_a cloud_n which_o the_o sun_n do_v quick_o consume_v in_o it_o be_v nothing_o so_o be_v all_o the_o attempt_n of_o the_o adversary_n full_a of_o threaten_n but_o in_o the_o end_n they_o come_v to_o nothing_o this_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o christian_n to_o diminish_v the_o power_n of_o the_o adversary_n &_o contrariwise_o to_o amplify_v the_o word_n &_o the_o mighty_a protection_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o devil_n sin_n death_n and_o other_o spiritual_a tentation_n be_v great_a but_o a_o christian_a can_v make_v a_o distinction_n of_o greatness_n for_o greatness_n be_v understand_v two_o manner_n of_o way_n the_o one_o be_v according_a to_o the_o eye_n which_o the_o eye_n judge_v after_o the_o outward_a show_n the_o other_o be_v according_a to_o the_o truth_n which_o the_o truth_n judge_v after_o the_o word_n the_o greatness_n therefore_o of_o call_v grace_n heaven_n itself_o by_o the_o which_o we_o have_v a_o open_a passage_n unto_o heaven_n and_o the_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o law_n by_o work_n or_o by_o our_o own_o endeavour_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o most_o large_a heaven_n it_o receive_v we_o beleve_v that_o by_o adoption_n we_o be_v make_v righteous_a before_o god_n through_o christ._n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o show_v we_o the_o way_n how_o to_o escape_v death_n sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o out_o of_o this_o life_n we_o may_v pass_v to_o life_n everlasting_a and_o in_o teach_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o depth_n have_v i_o call_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o may_v seem_v that_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o more_o word_n than_o need_v but_o he_o that_o consider_v well_o the_o cause_n which_o force_v but_o he_o set_v forth_o here_o the_o grief_n of_o a_o vex_a and_o wound_a conscience_n &_o the_o very_a sorrow_n of_o death_n when_o a_o man_n feel_v his_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n think_v himself_o forsake_v of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o desert_n accuse_v before_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n yea_o when_o it_o seem_v unto_o he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o i_o for_o the_o same_o neither_o can_v i_o find_v relief_n or_o comfort_n to_o my_o restless_a &_o afflict_a soul_n against_o the_o malice_n of_o man_n wherewith_o they_o molest_v and_o vex_v we_o there_o be_v remedy_n to_o be_v find_v but_o this_o wound_n be_v uncurable_a except_o the_o lord_n send_v help_v and_o succour_v from_o above_o and_o in_o deed_n such_o trouble_n as_o the_o godly_a be_v common_o exercise_v withal_o as_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n wife_n child_n &_o such_o other_o may_v yet_o be_v overcome_v or_o bear_v with_o patience_n moreover_o in_o those_o which_o be_v count_v inferior_a sin_n as_o the_o offence_n of_o youth_n the_o deject_v &_o break_v hearted_a may_v more_o easy_o be_v raise_v up_o again_o but_o these_o affliction_n seem_v to_o they_o and_o be_v in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o way_n whereby_o such_o as_o have_v suffer_v the_o like_a tentation_n have_v be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o here_o you_o see_v david_n what_o he_o do_v you_o see_v whither_o he_o fly_v in_o his_o great_a distress_n he_o despair_v not_o but_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n as_o one_o yet_o hope_v assure_o to_o find_v relief_n and_o comfort_n rest_v thou_o also_o in_o this_o hope_n and_o do_v as_o he_o do_v david_n be_v not_o tempt_v to_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v despair_v think_v not_o thou_o therefore_o that_o thy_o tentation_n be_v send_v unto_o thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v swallow_v these_o bitter_a conflict_n for_o god_n will_v that_o in_o his_o church_n one_o shall_v help_v to_o comfort_v a_o other_o as_o member_n knit_v together_o in_o one_o body_n and_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o when_o two_o be_v gather_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v the_o third_o amongst_o they_o and_o doubtless_o nothing_o comfort_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o hear_v some_o godly_a brother_n declare_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o such_o terror_n and_o affliction_n be_v send_v of_o god_n not_o to_o destroy_v we_o but_o to_o humble_v we_o thereby_o to_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o receive_v the_o same_o with_o thankful_a heart_n but_o if_o in_o this_o distress_n we_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o help_n of_o such_o faithful_a brethren_n we_o must_v then_o do_v as_o davidâ—id_v â—id_z in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v we_o must_v cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n &_o pray_v this_o cry_n unto_o god_n and_o this_o vehement_a desire_n which_o the_o mind_n before_o oppress_v with_o anguish_n and_o sorrow_n can_v scarce_o once_o feel_v it_o help_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n also_o very_o much_o as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o hear_v some_o faithful_a brother_n with_o comfortable_a exhortation_n &_o counsel_n out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n say_v on_o this_o wise_a brother_n why_o be_v thou_o so_o heavy_a heart_a desperation_n do_v thou_o not_o hear_v that_o god_n will_v not_o the_o death_n of_o a_o sinner_n have_v thou_o forget_v that_o god_n command_v thou_o able_a to_o abide_v it_o or_o to_o stand_v in_o thy_o sight_n oh_o lord_n wherefore_o let_v no_o man_n trust_v that_o by_o his_o own_o merit_n or_o righteousness_n he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o we_o as_o heretic_n be_v not_o this_o extreme_a malice_n they_o will_v not_o do_v themselves_o that_o they_o teach_v other_o to_o do_v for_o when_o death_n come_v they_o dare_v not_o trust_v to_o their_o own_o merit_n and_o yet_o will_v they_o force_v other_o so_o to_o do_v or_o most_o cruel_o condemn_v they_o for_o heretic_n thus_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o such_o as_o be_v not_o utter_o void_a of_o understanding_n that_o no_o man_n live_v overcome_v by_o his_o own_o work_n or_o righteousness_n in_o god_n sight_n and_o yet_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o man_n when_o it_o be_v not_o under_o tentation_n still_o look_v unto_o work_n and_o seek_v mean_n how_o it_o may_v by_o they_o please_v god_n but_o here_o be_v set_v forth_o unto_o we_o a_o simple_a and_o a_o plain_a doctrine_n if_o thou_o lord_n will_v mark_v what_o be_v do_v amiss_o none_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o abide_v it_o who_o will_v then_o desire_v to_o enter_v into_o judgement_n that_o he_o constrain_v to_o confess_v that_o we_o have_v many_o way_n offend_v against_o that_o law_n it_o can_v not_o be_v but_o that_o certain_a desperation_n must_v needs_o follow_v except_o christ_n as_o a_o tender_a &_o â—oving_a mother_n give_v unto_o we_o that_o dug_n of_o grace_n &_o raise_v up_o our_o oppress_a &_o afflict_a soul_n so_o judas_n be_v drive_v to_o the_o halter_n by_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n for_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n whereby_o the_o silly_a conscience_n torment_v with_o sin_n can_v be_v heal_v but_o this_o alone_a to_o believe_v as_z the_o former_a psalm_n teach_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v mercy_n &_o plentiful_a redemption_n this_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n gospel_n which_o must_v follow_v the_o law_n whereunto_o also_o there_o be_v a_o way_n prepare_v by_o the_o law_n for_o like_v as_o our_o sin_n must_v be_v reprove_v &_o accuse_v so_o the_o terror_n which_o this_o accusation_n bring_v have_v need_n of_o consolation_n wherefore_o the_o true_a consolation_n and_o the_o true_a sin_n propitiation_n which_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n pertain_v to_o true_a sin_n which_o drive_v a_o man_n down_o to_o hell_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o withstand_v satan_n and_o to_o heal_v our_o wound_a conscience_n then_o also_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o power_n of_o his_o word_n whereby_o he_o sustain_v be_v as_o child_n wane_a from_o the_o mother_n breast_n hard_a some_o think_v themselves_o high_o learn_v in_o these_o matter_n and_o that_o they_o know_v they_o well_o enough_o but_o take_v you_o heed_n and_o beware_v of_o this_o presumption_n reckon_v yourselves_o in_o the_o number_n of_o scholar_n and_o learner_n for_o satan_n be_v so_o crafty_a that_o he_o can_v easy_o take_v away_o this_o distinction_n and_o force_v upon_o we_o in_o steed_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o law_n and_o again_o in_o steed_n of_o the_o law_n the_o gospel_n for_o how_o often_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o poor_a and_o miserable_a conscience_n in_o the_o agony_n of_o death_n lie_v hold_v upon_o certain_a sentence_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o do_v in_o deed_n pertain_v unto_o the_o law_n and_o thereby_o lose_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n and_o consolation_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o for_o example_n if_o thou_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n keep_v the_o commandment_n again_o not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n with_o such_o sentence_n poor_a and_o silly_a conscience_n be_v so_o bruise_v and_o break_v that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o on_o this_o breast_n or_o dug_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v safe_a and_o be_v sure_a of_o the_o victory_n but_o he_o that_o apprehend_v it_o not_o must_v needs_o perish_v and_o despair_v in_o this_o doctrine_n therefore_o touch_v our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n there_o be_v great_a danger_n we_o must_v not_o presume_v therefore_o but_o walk_v in_o fear_n &_o humility_n for_o if_o presumption_n in_o politic_a &_o worldly_a matter_n when_o man_n be_v proud_a of_o their_o riches_n power_n or_o wisdom_n be_v not_o without_o danger_n in_o divine_a matter_n it_o be_v much_o more_o dangerous_a yea_o most_o dangerous_a and_o damnable_a and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o there_o it_o reign_v most_o of_o all_o for_o satan_n come_v to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o labour_v with_o all_o might_n and_o subtlety_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o presumption_n and_o security_n wherefore_o they_o must_v fight_v continual_o against_o this_o hide_v and_o lurk_a poison_n and_o above_o all_o thing_n they_o must_v beware_v that_o they_o flatter_v not_o themselves_o as_o though_o they_o know_v well_o enough_o the_o distinction_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n in_o deed_n thou_o may_v know_v it_o but_o consider_v well_o whether_o thou_o have_v sure_o hold_v thereof_o so_o that_o it_o can_v be_v wrest_v from_o thou_o by_o satan_n &_o thine_o own_o conscience_n paul_n plain_o confess_v that_o he_o have_v not_o yet_o attain_v to_o this_o knowledge_n 3._o but_o follow_v it_o as_o one_o run_v in_o the_o race_n and_o press_v towards_o the_o mark_n so_o it_o go_v with_o we_o all_o we_o turn_v our_o face_n unto_o the_o mark_n and_o this_o be_v the_o race_n we_o run_v that_o we_o may_v attain_v unto_o the_o mark_n but_o that_o will_v not_o be_v until_o this_o flesh_n be_v put_v of_o and_o lay_v in_o the_o earth_n wherefore_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n let_v we_o walk_v in_o fear_n and_o humbleness_n of_o heart_n with_o hearty_a prayer_n that_o the_o light_n which_o sacrament_n do_v bring_v unto_o those_o which_o use_v they_o right_o to_o those_o he_o wish_v joy_n and_o gladness_n and_o that_o they_o may_v rejoice_v and_o be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n the_o meaning_n then_o of_o this_o clause_n be_v this_o that_o christ_n jesus_n our_o king_n have_v give_v unto_o we_o his_o word_n have_v command_v we_o to_o be_v baptize_v to_o use_v the_o sacrament_n by_o the_o fault_n partly_o of_o ourselves_o as_o i_o have_v say_v and_o partly_o of_o satan_n who_o lead_v we_o from_o the_o word_n before_o we_o be_v ware_n and_o make_v we_o to_o think_v of_o our_o own_o worthiness_n or_o unworthiness_n of_o our_o good_a or_o evil_a desert_n also_o of_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n of_o the_o torment_n of_o hell_n etc_n etc_n when_o we_o think_v of_o these_o thing_n if_o we_o lay_v not_o hold_v upon_o christ_n we_o perish_v and_o be_v swallow_v up_o with_o anguish_n and_o sorrow_n for_o this_o be_v to_o lose_v the_o ark_n of_o the_o covenant_n they_o therefore_o which_o in_o these_o danger_n take_v hold_v again_o of_o the_o word_n be_v safe_a and_o be_v now_o able_a to_o say_v with_o david_n why_o be_v thou_o cast_v down_o 42.6_o oh_o my_o soul_n
