XXX 1 Great mercies promised unto the repentant 11 The commandment is manifest 15 Death and life are set before them ANd it shall come to pass when all these things are come upon thee the blessing and the curse which I have set before thee and thou shalt call them to minde among all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee 2 And shalt return unto the LORD thy God and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day thou and thy children with all thine heart and with all thy soul 3 That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity and have compassion upon thee and will return and gather thee from all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee 4 * Neh. 1 9● If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee and from thence will he fetch thee 5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed and thou shalt possess it and he will do thee good and multiply thee above thy fathers 6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart and with all-thy soul that thou mayest live 7 And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies and on them that hate thee which persecuted thee 8 And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD and do all his commandments which I command thee this day 9 * Chap. 28.11 And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand in the fruit of thy body and in the fruit of thy cattel and in the fruit of thy land for good for the LORD will again rejoyce over thee for good as he rejoyced over thy fathers 10 If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God to

XXXI 1 Moses encourageth the people 7 He encourageth Joshua 9 He delivereth the law unto the priests to read it in the seventh ●ear to the people 14 God giveth a charge to Joshua 19 and a song to testifie against the people 24 Moses delivereth the book of the law to the Levites to keep 28 He maketh a protestation to the elders ANd Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel 2 And he said unto them I am an hundred and twenty years old this day I can no more go out and come in also the LORD hath said unto me * Numb 20.12 Chap. 3.27 Thou shalt not go over this Jordan 3 The LORD thy God he will go over before thee and he will destroy these nations from before thee and thou shalt possess them and Joshua he shall go over before thee * Numb 27.21 as the LORD hath said 4 And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og kings of the Amorites and unto the land of them whom he destroyed 5 And * Chap. ● 2 the LORD shall give them up before your face that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you 6 Be strong and of a goood courage fear not nor be afraid of them for the LORD thy God he it is that doth go with thee he will not fail thee nor forsake thee 7 ¶ And Moses called unto Joshua and said unto him in the sight of all Israel Be strong and of a good courage for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them and thou shalt cause them to inherit it 8 And the LORD he it is that doth go before thee he will be with thee he will not fail thee neither forsake thee fear not neither be dismayed 9 ¶ And Moses wrote this law and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD and unto all the elders of Israel 10 And Moses commanded them saying At the end of every seven years in the solemnity of the * Chap. 25.1 year of release in the f●ast of tabernacles 11 When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing 12 Gather the people together men and women and children and thy stranger that is within thy gates that they may hear and that they may learn and fear the LORD your God and observe to do all the words of this law 13 And that their children which have not known any thing may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it 14 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thy days approach that thou must die call Joshua and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation that I may give him a charge And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation 15 And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thou shalt † Heb. lie down sleep with thy fathers and this people will rise up and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land whither they go to be amongst them and will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them 17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they shall be devoured and many evils and troubles shall † Heb. finde them befal them so that they will say in that day Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not amongst us 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought in that they are turned unto other gods 19 Now therefore write ye this song for you and teach it the children of Israel put it in their mouths that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel 20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers that floweth with milk and honey and they shall have eaten and filled themselves and waxen fat then will they turn unto other gods and serve them and provoke me and break my covenant 21 And it shall come to pass when many evils and troubles are befaln them that this song shall testifie † Heb. before against them as a witness for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed for I know their imagination which they † Heb. d● go about even now before I have brought them into the land which I sware 22 ¶ Moses
therefore wrote this song the same day and taught it the children of Israel 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge and said * Jos 1.6 Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them and I will be with thee 24 ¶ And it came to pass when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book until they were finished 25 That Moses commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD saying 26 Take this book of the law and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God that it may be there for a witness against thee 27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck behold while I am yet alive with you this day ye have been rebellious against the LORD and how much more after my death 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to record against them 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt your selves and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you and evil will befal you in the latter days because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song until they were ended CHAP. XXXII 1 Moses song which setteth forth Gods mercy and vengeance 46 He exhorteth them to set their hearts upon it 48 God sendeth him up to mount Nebo to see the land and die GIve ear O ye heavens and I will speak and hear O earth the words of my mouth 2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain my speech shall distil as the dew as the small rain upon the tender herb and as the showers upon the grass 3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD ascribe ye greatness unto our God 4 He is the Rock his work is perfect for all his ways are judgement a God of truth and without iniquity just and right is he 5 † Heb. he hath corrupted to himself They have corrupted themselves ‖ Or that they are not his children that is their blot their spot is not the spot of his children they are a perverse and crooked generation 6 Do ye thus requite the LORD O foolish people and unwise is not he thy father that hath bought thee hath he not made thee and established thee 7 ¶ Remember the days of old consider the years of † Heb. generation and generation many generations ask thy father and he will shew thee thy elders and they will tell thee 8 When the most high divided to the nations their inheritance when he separated the sons of Adam he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel 9 For the LORDs portion is his people Jacob is the † Heb. cord lot of his inheritance 10 He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness he ‖ Or compassed him about led him about he instructed him he kept him as the apple of his eye 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest fluttereth over her young spreadeth abroad her wings taketh them beareth them on her wings 12 So the LORD alone did lead him and there was no strange god with him 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oyl out of the flinty rock 14 Butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats with the fat of kidneys of wheat and thou didst drink the pure bloud of the grape 15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked thou art waxen fat thou art grown thick thou art covered with fatness then he forsook God which made him lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation 16 They provoked him to jealousie with strange gods with abominations provoked they him to anger 17 They sacrificed unto devils ‖ Or which were not God not to God to gods whom they knew not to new gods that came newly up whom your fathers feared not 18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten God that formed thee 19 And when the LORD saw it he ‖ Or despised abhorred them because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters 20 And he said I will hide my face from them I will see what their end shall be for they are a very froward generation children in whom is no faith 21 They have moved me to jealousie with that which is not god they have provoked me to anger with their vanities and * Rom. 10.19 I will move them to jealousie with those which are not a people I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation 22 For a fire is kindled in my anger and ‖ Or hath burned shall burn unto the lowest hell and ‖ Or hath consumed shall consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them I will spend mine arrows upon them 24 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with † Heb. burning ●oals burning heat and w●th bitter destruction I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them with the poyson of serpents of the dust 25 The sword without and terrour † Heb. from the chambers within shall † Heb. bereave destroy both the young man and the virgin the suckling also with the man of gray hairs 26 I said I would scatter them into corners I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men 27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely and lest they should say ‖ Or Our high hand and not the LORD hath done all this Our hand is high and the LORD hath not done all this 28 For they are a nation void of counsel neither is there any understanding in them 29 O that they were wise that they understood this that they would consider their latter end 30 How should * Jos 23.10 one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight except their Rock had sold them and the LORD had shut them up 31 For their rock is not as our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges 32 For their vine ‖ Or is worse then the vine of Sodom c. is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah their grapes are grapes of gall their clusters are bitter 33 Their wine is the poyson of dragons and the cruel venome of asps 34 Is not this laid up in store with
which Moses the LORDs servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sun-rising 16 ¶ And they answered Joshua saying All that thou commandest us we will do and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go 17 According as we hearkned unto Moses in all things so will we hearken unto thee onely the LORD thy God be with thee as he was with Moses 18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him he shall be put to death onely be strong and of a good courage CHAP. II. 1 Rahab receiveth and concealeth the two spies sent from Shittim 8 The covenant between her and them 23 Their return and relation ANd Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spie secretly saying Go view the land even Jericho and they went and * Heb. 11.31 Jam. 2.25 came into an harlots house named Rahab and † Heb. lay lodged there 2 And it was told the king of Jericho saying Behold there came men in hitherto night of the children of Israel to search out the countrey 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab saying Bring forth the men that are come to thee which are entred into thine house for they be come to search out all the countrey 4 And the woman took the two men and hid them and said thus There came men unto me but I wist not whence they were 5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate when it was dark that the men went out whither the men went I wot not pursue after them quickly for ye shall overtake them 6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and hid them with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order upon the roof 7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the foords and assoon as they which pursued after them were gone out they shut the gate 8 ¶ And before they were said down she came up unto them upon the roof 9 And she said unto the men I know that the LORD hath given you the land and that your terrour is faln upon us and that all the inhabitants of the land † Heb. melt faint because of you 10 For we have heard how the LORD * ●x 14.21 Ch. 4.23 dried up the water of the Red sea for you when you came out of Egypt and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites that were on the other side Jordan * Num● 21.24 Sihon and O● whom ye utterly destroyed 11 And assoon as we had heard these things our hearts did melt neither † Heb. r●se up did there remain any more courage in any man because of you for the LORD your God he is God in heaven above and in earth beneath 12 Now therefore I pray you swear unto me by the LORD since I have shewed you kindness that ye will also shew kindness unto my fathers house and give me a true token 13 And that ye will save alive my father and my mother and my brethren and my sisters and all that they have and deliver our lives from death 14 And the men answered her Our life † Heb. in stead of you to die for yours if ye utter not this our business And it shall be when the LORD hath given us the land that we will deal kindly and truly with thee 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window for her house was upon the town-wall and she dwelt upon the wall 16 And she said unto them Get you to the mountain lest the pursuers meet you and hide your selves there three days until the pursuers be returned and alterward may ye go your way 17 And the men said unto her We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear 18 Behold when we come into the land thou shalt binde this line of scarlet threed in the window which thou didst let us down by and thou shalt † Heb. gath●r bring thy father and thy mother and thy brethren and all thy fathers houshold home unto thee 19 And it shall be that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street his bloud shall be upon his head and we will be guiltless and whoseover shall be with thee in the house his blood shall be on our head if any hand be upon him 20 And if thou utter this our business then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear 21 And she said According unto your words so be it And she sent them away and they departed and she bound the scarlet line in the window 22 And they went and came unto the mountain and abode there three days until the pursuers were returned And the pursuers sought them throughout all the way but found them not 23 ¶ So the two men returned and descended from the mountain and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun and told him all things that befel them 24 And they said unto Joshua Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land for even all the inhabitants of the countrey do † Heb. melt faint because of us CHAP. III. 1 Joshua cometh to Jordan 2 The officers instruct the people for the passage 7 The Lord encourageth Joshua 9 Joshua encourageth the people 14 The waters of Jordan are divided ANd Joshua rose early in the morning and they removed from Shittim and came to Jordan he and all the children of Israel and lodged there before they passed over 2 And it came to pass after three days that the officers went through the host 3 And they commanded the people saying When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God and the priests the Levites bearing it then ye shall remove from your place and go after it 4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it about two thousand cubits by measure come not near unto it that ye may know the way by which ye must go for ye have not passed this way † Heb. since yesterday and the third day heretofore 5 And Joshua said unto the people * Lev. 20.7 Num. 11.18 Chap. 7.13 1 Sam. 16.5 Sanctifie your selves for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you 6 And Joshua spake unto the priests saying Take up the ark of the covenant and pass over before the people And they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people 7 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua This day will I begin to magnifie thee in the sight of all Israel that they may know that * Chap. 1.5 as I was with Moses so I will be with thee 8 And thou shalt command the priests that bare the ark of the covenant saying When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan ye shall stand still in
come hither And they compassed him in and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city and were † Heb. silent quiet all the night saying In the morning when it is day we shall kill him 3 And Samson lay till midnight and arose at midnight and took the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts and went away with them † Heb. with the bar bar and all and put them upon his shoulders and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron 4 ¶ And it came to pass afterward that he loved a woman ‖ Or by the b●ook in the valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah 5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her and said unto her Entice him and see wherein his great strength lieth and by what means we may prevail against him that we may binde him to ‖ Or humble afflict him and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver 6 And Delilah said to Samson Tell me I pray thee wherein thy great strength lieth and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee 7 And Samson said unto her If they binde me with seven ‖ Or new cords † Heb. moist green wit hs that were never dried then shall I be weak and be as † Heb. one another man 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green wit hs which had not been dried and she bound him with them 9 Now there were men lying in wait abiding with her in the chamber And she said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he brake the wit hs as a threed of tow is broken when it † Heb. smelleth toucheth the fire so his strength was not known 10 And Delilah said unto Samson Behold thou hast mocked me and told me lies now tell me I pray thee wherewith thou mightest be bound 11 And he said unto her If thou binde me fast with new ropes † Heb. wherewith work hath not been done that never were occupied then shall I be weak and be as another man 12 Delilah therefore took new ropes and bound him therewith and said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber And he brake them from off his arms like a threed 13 And Delilah said unto Samson Hitherto thou hast mocked me and told me lies tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound And he said unto her If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web 14 And she fastned it with the pin and said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he awaked out of his sleep and went away with the pin of the beam and with the web 15 ¶ And she said unto him How canst thou say I love thee when thine heart is not with me Thou hast mocked me these three times and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth 16 And it came to pass when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him so that his soul was † Heb. shortned vexed unto death 17 That he told her all his heart and said unto her There hath not come a rasor upon mine head for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mothers womb if I be shaven then my strength will go from me and I shall become weak and be like any other man 18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines saying Come up this once for he hath shewed me all his heart Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her and brought money in their hand 19 And she make him sleep upon her knees and she called for a man and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head and she began to afflict him and his strength went from him 20 And she said The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he awoke out of his sleep and said I will go out as at other times before and shake my self And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him 21 ¶ But the Philistines took him and † Heb. bored out put out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with fetters of brass and he did grinde in the prison-house 22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again ‖ Or as when he was shaves after he was shaven 23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god and to rejoyce for they said Our God hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand 24 And when the people saw him they praised their god for they said Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy and the destroyer of our countrey † Heb. and who multiplyed our slain which slew many of us 25 And it came to pass when their hearts were merry that they said Call for Samson that he may make us sport And they called for Samson out of the prison-house and he made † Heb. before them them sport and they set him between the pillars 26 And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand Suffer me that I may seel the pillars whereupon the house standeth that I may lean upon them 27 Now the house was full of men and women and all the lords of the Philistines were there and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women that beheld while Samson made sport 28 And Samson called unto the LORD and said O Lord GOD remember me I pray thee and strengthen me I pray thee onely this once O God that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood and ‖ Or. he leaned on them on which it was born up of the one with his right hand and of the other with his left 30 And Samson said Let † Heb. my soul me die with the Philistines and he howed himself with all his might and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people that were therein so the dead which he slew at his death were mo then they which he slew in his life 31 Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father and he judged Israel twenty years CHAP. XVII 1 Of the money that Micah first stole then restored his mother maketh images 5 and he ornaments for them 7 He hireth a Levite to be his priest ANd there was a man of mount Ephraim whose name was Micah 2 And he said unto his mother The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee about which thou curledst and spakest of also in mine
with my lord then remember thine hand-maid 32 ¶ And David said to Abigail Blessed be the LORD God of Israel which sent thee this day to meet me 33 And blessed be thy advice and blessed be thou which hast kept me this day from coming to shed bloud and from avenging my self with mine own hand 34 For in very deed as the LORD God of Israel liveth which hath kept me back from hurting thee except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall 35 So David received of her hand that which she had brought him and said unto her Go up in peace to thine house see I have hearkned to thy voice and have accepted thy person 36 ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal and behold he held a seast in his house like the feast of a king and Nabals heart was merry within him for he was very drunken wherefore she told him nothing less or more until the morning light 37 But it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of Nabal and his wife had told him these things that his heart died within him and he became as a stone 38 And it came to pass about ten days after that the LORD smote Nabal that he died 39 ¶ And when David heard that Nabal was dead he said Blessed be the LORD that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal and hath kept his servant from evil for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head And David sent and communed with Abigail to take her to him to wife 40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel they spake unto her saying David sent us unto thee to take thee to him to wife 41 And she arose and bowed her self on her face to the earth and said Behold let thine hand-maid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord 42 And Abigail hasted and arose and rode upon an ass with five damsels of hers that went † Heb. at her feet after her and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife 43 David also took Ahinoam * Josh 25.56 of Jezreel and they were also both of them his wives 44 ¶ But Saul had given * 2 Sam. 3.14 15. Michal his daughter Davids wife to Phalti the son of Laish which was of Gallim CHAP. XXVI 1 Saul by the diseovery of the Ziphites cometh to Hachilah against David 4 David coming into the trench stayeth Abishai from killing Saul but taketh his spear and cruse 13 David reproveth Abner 18 and exhorteth Saul 21 Saul acknowledgeth his sin ANd the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah saying * Chap. 28.19 Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah which is before Jeshimon 2 Then Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah which is before Jeshimon by the way but David abode in the wilderness and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness 4 David therefore sent out spies and understood that Saul was come in very deed 5 ¶ And David arose and came to the place where Saul had pitched and David beheld the place where Saul lay and * Chap. 14.50 17.55 Abner the son of Ner the captain of his host and Saul lay in the ‖ Or midst of his carriages trench and the people pitched round about him 6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah brother to Joab saying Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp And Abishai said I will go down with thee 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night and behold Saul lay sleeping within the trench and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster but Abner and the people lay round about him 8 Then said Abishai to David God hath † Heb. shut up delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day now therefore let me smite him I pray thee with the spear even to the earth at once and I will not smite him the second time 9 And David said to Abishai Destroy him not for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORDS anointed and be guiltless 10 David said furthermore As the LORD liveth the LORD shall smite him or his day shall come to die or he shall descend into battel and perish 11 The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORDS anointed but I pray thee take thou now the spear that is at his bolster and the cruse of water and let us go 12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Sauls bolster and they gat them away and no man saw it nor knew it neither awaked for they were all asleep because a deep sleep from the LORD was faln upon them 13 ¶ Then David went over to the other side and stood on the top of an hill afar off a great space being between them 14 And David cried to the people and to Abner the son of Ner saying Answerest thou not Abner Then Abner answered and said Who art thou that criest to the king 15 And David said to Abner Art not thou a valiant man and who is like to thee in Israel wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord 16 This thing is not good that thou hast done as the LORD liveth ye are † Heb. the sons of death worthy to die because ye have not kept your master the LORDS anointed and now see where the kings spear is and the cruse of water that was at his bolster 17 And Saul knew Davids voice and said Is this thy voice my son David And David said It is my voice my lord O king 18 And he said Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant for what have I done or what evil is in mine hand 19 Now therefore I pray thee let my lord the king hear the words of his servant If the LORD have stirred thee up against me let him † Heb. smell accept an offering but if they be the children of men cursed be they before the LORD for they have driven me out this day from † Heb. cleaving abiding in the inheritance of the LORD saying Go serve other gods 20 Now therefore let not my bloud fall to the earth before the face of the LORD for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains 21 ¶ Then said Saul I have sinned return my son David for I will no more do thee harm because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day
fourty years seven years reigned he in Hebron and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem 12 ¶ * ●2 Chr. 29.23 Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father and his kingdom was established greatly 13 ¶ And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon and she said Comest thou peaceably And he said Peaceably 14 He said moreover I have somewhat to say unto thee And she said Say on 15 And he said Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel set their faces on me that I should reign howbeit the kingdom is turned about and is become my brothers for it was his from the LORD 16 And now I ask one petition of thee † Heb. turn not away my face deny me not And she said unto him Say on 17 And he said Speak I pray thee unto Solomon the king for he will not say thee nay that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife 18 And Bath-sheba said Well I will speak for thee unto the king 19 ¶ Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon to speak unto him for Adonijah and the king rose up to meet her and bowed himself unto her and sat down on his throne and caused a seat to be set for the kings mother and she sat on his right hand 20 Then she said I desire one small petition of thee I pray thee say me not nay And the king said unto her Ask on my mother for I will not say thee nay 21 And she said Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife 22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah ask for him the kingdom also for he is mine elder brother even for him and for Abiathar the priest and for Joab the son of Zeruiah 23 Then king Solomon sware by the LORD saying God do so to me and more also if Adonijah have not spoken this word agaist his own life 24 Now therefore as the LORD liveth which hath established me and set me on the throne of David my father and who hath made me an house as he * 2 Sam. 7.12 13. promised Adonijah shall be put to death this day 25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and he fell upon him that he died 26 ¶ And unto Abiathar the priest said the king Get thee to Anathoth unto thine own fields for thou art † Heb. a man of d●●th worthy of death but I will not at this time put thee to death because thou batest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted 27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD that he might * 1 Sam. 2.31 35. fulfil the word of the LORD which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh 28 ¶ Then tidings came to Joab for Joab had turned after Adonijah though he turned not after Absalom and Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD and caught hold on the horns of the altar 29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD and behold he is by the altar then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada saying Go fall upon him 30 And Benaiah came to the rabernacle of the LORD and said unto him Thus saith the king Come forth And he said Nay but I will die here And Benaiah brought the king word again saying Thus said Joab and thus he answered me 31 And the king said unto him Do as he hath said and fall upon him and bury him that thou mayest take away the innocent bloud which Joab shed from me and from the house of my father 32 And the LORD shall return his bloud upon his own head who fell upon two men more righteous and better then he and slew them with the sword my father David not knowing thereof to wit * 2 fell upon him and slew him and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness 35 ¶ And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar 36 ¶ And the king sent and called for Shimei and said unto him Build thee an house in Jerusalem and dwell there and go not forth thence any whither 37 For it shall be that on the day thou goest out and passest over the brook Kidron thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die thy bloud shall be upon thine own head 38 And Shimei said unto the king The saying is good as my lord the king hath said so will thy servant do And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days 39 And it came to pass at the end of three years that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath and they told Shimei saving Behold thy servants he in Gath. 40 And Shimei arose and saddled his ass and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants and Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. 41 And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and was come again 42 And the king sent and called for Shimei and said unto him Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD and protested unto thee saying Know for a certain that on the day thou goest out and walkest abroad any whither that thou shalt surely die and thou saidst unto me The word that I have heard is good 43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD and the commandment that I have charged thee with 44 The king said moreover to Shimei Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to that thou didst to David my father therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head 45 And king Solomon shall be blessed and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever 46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada which went out and fell upon him that he died and the * 2 Chr. 1.1 kingdom was established in the hand of up their eyes afar off and knew him not they sified up their voice and wept and they rent every one his mantle and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven 13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights and none spake a word unto him for they saw that his grief was very great CHAP. III. 1 Job curseth the day and services of his birth 13 The ease of death 20 He complaineth of life because of his anguish AFter this opened Job his mouth and cursed his day 2 And Job ‡ Heb. answered snake and said 3 * Chap. 10.18.19 Jer. 10.14 Let the day perish wherein I was born and the night in which it was said There is a man childe conceived 4 Let that day be darkness let not God regard it from above neither let the light shine upon it 5 Let darkness and the shadow of death ‖ Or challenge it stain it let a cloud dwell upon it ‖ Or let them terrifie it as those who have a bitter day let the blackness of the day terrifie it 6 As for that night set it darkness seise upon it ‖ Or let it not rejoyce among the days let it not be joyned unto the days of the year let it not come into the number of the moneths 7 Lo let that night be solitary let no joyful voice come therein 8 Let them curse it that curse the day who are ready to raise up ‖ Or a leviathan their mourning 9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark let it look for light but have none neither let it see † Heb the eye-lids of the morning the dawning of the day 10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mothers womb nor hid sorrow from mine eyes 11 Why died I not from the womb why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly 12 Why did the knees prevent me or why the breasts that I should suck 13 For now should I have lien still and been quiet I should have slept then had I been at rest 14 With kings and counsellours of the earth which built desolate places for themselves 15 Or with princes that had gold who filled their houses with silver 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been as infants which never saw light 17 There the wicked cease from troubling and there the † Heb. wearied in strength weary be at rest 18 There the prisoners rest together they hear not the voice of the oppressour 19 The small and great are there and the servant is free from his master 20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery and life unto the bitter in soul 21 Which † Heb. wait long for death but it cometh not and dig for it more then for hid treasures 22 Which rejoyce exceedingly and are glad when they can finde the grave 23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid * Ch. 19.8 and whom God hath hedged in 24 For my sighing cometh † Heb. before my meat before I eat and my roarings are poured out like the waters 25 For † Heb. XIII A Wise son heareth his fathers instruction but a scorner heareth not rebuke 2 * Chap. 12.14 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth but the soul of the transgressours shall eat violence 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction 4 The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat 5 A righteous man hateth lying but a wicked man is loathsom and cometh to shame 6 * Chap. 11.3 5 6. XXVII 1 The care of God over his vineyard 7 His chastisements differ from judgements 12 The Church of Jews and Gentiles IN that day the LORD with his fore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the ‖ Or crossing like a bar piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea 2 In that day sing ye unto her A vineyard of red wine 3 I the LORD do keep it I will water it every moment lest any hurt it I will keep it night and day 4 Fury is not in me who would set the briers and thorns against me in battel I would ‖ Or march against go through them I would burn them together 5 Or let him take hold of my strength that he may make peace with me and he shall make peace with me 6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit 7 ¶ Hath he smitten him † Heb. according to the s●o●e of those as he smote those that smote him or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him 8 In measure ‖ Or. when thou sendest it forth when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it ‖ Or when he removeth it he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east-wind 9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged and this is all the fruit to take away his sin when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten in sunder the groves and ‖ Or 〈◊〉 images images shall not stand up 10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate and the habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness there shall the calf feed and there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof 11 When the boughs thereof are withered they shall be broken off the women come and set them on fire for it is a people of no understanding therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them and he that formed them will shew them no favour 12 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat off from the chanel of the river unto the stream of Egypt and ye shall be gathered one by one O ye children of Israel 13 And it shall come to pass in that day that the great trumpet shall be blown and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the out casts in the land of Egypt and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem CHAP. XXVIII 1 The prophet threatneth Ephraim for their pride and drunkenness 5 The residue shall be advanced in the kingdom of Christ 7 He rebuketh their errour 9 their untowardness to learn 14 and their security 16 Christ the sure foundationis promised 18 Their security shall be tried 23 They are incited to the consideration of Gods discreet providence WO to the crown of pride to the drunkards of Ephraim whose glorious beauty is a sading stower which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are † Heb. broken overcome with wine 2 Behold the Lord hath a mighty and strong one which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm as a floud of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand 3 The crown of pride the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden † Heb. with feet under feet 4 And the glorious beauty which is on the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower and as the hasty fruit before the summer which when he that looketh upon it seeth it while it is yet in his hand he † Heb. swalloweth eateth it up 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people 6 And for a spirit of judgement to him that sitteth in judgement and for strength to them that turn the battel to the gate 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine and through strong drink are out of the way the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink they are swallowed up of wine they are out of the way through strong drink they err in vision they stumble in judgement 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness so that there is no place clean 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand † Heb. the bearing doctrine them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts 10 For precept ‖ Or hath been must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little 11 For with † Heb. stammerings of lips * 1 Cor. 14.21 stammering lips and another tongue ‖ Or he hath spoken will he speak to this people 12 To whom he said This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line here a little and there a little that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD ye scornful men that rule this people which is in Jerusalem 15 Because ye have said We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement when the overflowing scourge shall pass through it shall not come unto us for we have made lies our refuge and under falihood have we hid our selves 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation * Psal 118.22 Matth. 21.42 Act. 4.11 Rom. 9.33 10.11 1 Pet 2.6 7 8. a stone a tried stone a precious corner stone a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste 17 Judgement also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters shall overflow the hiding place 18 ¶ And you covenant with death shall be disanulled and your agreement with hell shall not stand when the overflowing scourge shall pass through 〈◊〉 ye shall be † Heb. a trea●ing down to it troden down by it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you for morning by morning shall it pass over by day and by night and it shall be a vexation onely ‖ Or when be shall make you to understand doctrine to understand the

IX 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the Jews for their manifold sins 9 and for their judgement 12 Disobedience is the cause of their bitter calamity 17 He exhorteth to mourn for their destruct on 22 and to trust not in themselves but in God 25 He threatneth both Jews and Gentiles † Heb. had made that the prison 16 ¶ When Jeremiah was entred into the dungeon and into the ‖ Or 〈◊〉 cabins and Jeremiah had remained there many days 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out and the king asked him secretly in his house and said Is there any word from the LORD And Jeremiah said There is for said he thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon 18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah What have I offended against thee or against thy servants or against this people that ye have put me in prison 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you saying The king of Babylon shall not come against you nor against this land 20 Therefore hear now I pray thee O my lord the king † Heb. let my supplication fall let my supplication I pray thee be accepted before thee that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe lest I die there 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street until all the bread in the city were spent Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison CHAP. XXXVIII 1 Jeremiah by a false suggestion is put into the dungeon of Malebiah 7 Ebed meleab by suit getteth him some enlargement 14Vpon secret conference be counselleth the king by yeelding to save his life 24 By the kings instructions be concealeth the conference from the princes THen Shephatiah the son of Mattan and Gedasiah the son of Pashur and Jucal the son of Shelemiah and Pashur the son of Maichiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people saying 2 Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 21.9 He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence but he that goeth forth to the Caldeans shall live for he shall have his life for a prey and shall live 3 Thus saith the LORD This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylons army which shall take it 4 Therefore the Princes said unto the king We beseech thee let this man be put to death for thus he weakneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words unto them for this man seeketh not the † Heb. peace welfare of this people but the hurt 5 Then Zedekiah the king said Behold he is in your hand for the king is not be that can do any thing against you 6 Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son ‖ Or of the king of Hammelech that was in the court of the prison and they let down Jeremiah with cords And in the dungeon there was no water but mire So Jeremiah sunk in the mire 7 ¶ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian one of the eunuchs which was in the kings house heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the kings house and spake to the king saying 9 My lord the king these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the dungeon and † Heb. be will die he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is for there is no more bread in the city 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethioplan saying Take from hence thirty men † Heb. in thin● hand with thee and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he die 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah 12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine arm-holes under the cords And Jeremiah did so 13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords and took him up out of the dungeon and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison 14 ¶ Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the ‖ Or principal third entry that is in the house of the LORD and the king said unto Jeremiah I will ask thee a thing hide nothing from me 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah If I declare it unto thee wilt thou not surely put me to death and if I give thee counsel wilt thou not hearken unto me 16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah saying As the LORD liveth that made us this soul I will not put thee to death neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life 17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah Thus saith the LORD the God of hosts the God of Israel If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylons princes then thy soul shall live and this city shall not be burnt with fire and thou shalt live and thine house 18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylons princes then shall this city be given into the hand of the Caldeans and they shall burn it with fire and thou shalt not escape out of their hand 19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah I am afraid of the Jews that are faln to the Caldeans lest they deliver me into their hand and they mock me 20 But Jeremiah said They shall not deliver thee obey I beseech thee the voice of the LORD which I speak unto thee so it shall be well unto thee and thy soul shall live 21 But if thou refuse to go forth this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me 22 And behold all the women that are left in the king of Judahs house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylons princes and those women shall say † Heb. Men of thy peace Thy friends have set thee on and have prevailed against thee thy feet are sunk in the mire and they are turned away back 23 So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Caldeans and thou shalt not escape out of their hand but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon and † Heb. thou shalt burn c thou shalt cause this city to be burnt with fire 24 ¶ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah Let no man know of these words and thou shalt not die 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee and they come unto thee and say unto thee Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king hide it not from us and we will not put thee to death also what the king said unto thee 26 Then thou shalt say unto them I presented my supplication before the king that he would
they shall be given you to be consumed 13 And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army to declare words of truth and I will shew him a way whereby he shall go and win all the hill-countrey without losing the body or life of any one of his men 14 Now when the men heard her words and beheld her countenance they wondred greatly at her beauty and said unto her 15 Thou hast saved thy life in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord now therefore come to his tent and some of us shall conduct thee until they have delivered thee to his hands 16 And when thou standest before him be not afraid in thine heart but shew unto him according to thy word and he will entreat thee well 17 Then they chose out of them an hundred men ‖ Or and they prepared a ●hariet for her to accompany her and her maid and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes 18 Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp for her coming was noised among the tents and they came about her as she stood without the tent of Holofernes till they told him of her 19 And they wondred at her beauty and admired the children of Israel because of her and every one said to his neighbour Who would despise this people that have among them such women surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth 20 And they that lay near Holofernes went out and all his servants and they brought her into the tent 21 Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopie which was woven with purple and gold and emeralds and precious stones 22 So they shewed him of her and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him 23 And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance and she fell down upon her face and did reverence unto him and his servants took her up CHAP. XI 3 Holofernes asketh Judith the cause of her coming 6 She telleth him how and when he may prevail 20 He is much pleased with her wisdom and beauty THen said Holofernes unto her Woman be of good comfort fear not in thine heart for I never hurt any that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor the king of all the earth 2 Now therefore if thy people that dwelleth in the mountains had not set light by me I would not have lifted up my spear against them but they have done these things to themselves 3 But now tell me wherefore thou art fled from them and art come unto us for thou art come for safeguard be of good comfort thou shalt live this night and hereafter 4 For none shall hurt thee but entreat thee well as they do the servants of king Nabuchodonosor my lord 5 Then Judith said unto him Receive the words of thy servant and suffer thine hand-maid to speak in thy presence and I will declare no lie to my lord this night 6 And if thou wilt follow the words of thine hand-maid God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee and my lord shall not fail of his purposes 7 As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth and as his power liveth who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing for not onely men shall serve him by thee but also the beasts of the field and the cattle and the fowls of the air shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house 8 For we have heard of thy wisdom and thy policies and it is reported in all the earth that thou onely art ‖ Or in savour excellent in all the kingdom and mighty in knowledge and wonderful in feats of war 9 Now as concerning the matter which Achior did speak in thy council we have heard his words for the men of Bethulia ‖ Or gat him saved him and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee 10 Therefore O lord and governour reject not his word but lay it up in thine heart for it is true for our nation shall not be punished neither can the sword prevail against them except they sin against their God 11 And now that my lord be not defeated and frustrate of his purpose even death is now faln upon them and their sin hath overtaken them wherewith they will provoke their God to anger whensoever they shall do that which is not fit to be done 12 For their victuals fail them and all their water is scant and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattel and purposed to consume all those things that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws 13 And are resolved to spend the first-fruits of the corn and the tenths of wine and oyl which they had sanctified and reserved for the priests that serve in Jerusalem before the ●ace of our God the which things it is not lawful for any of the people so much as to touch with their hands 14 For they have sent some to Jerusalem because they also that dwell there have done the like to bring them a license from the senate 15 Now when they shall bring them word they will forthwith do it and they shall be given thee to be destroyed the same day 16 Wherefore I thine hand-maid knowing all this am fled from their presence and God hath sent me to work things with thee whereat all the earth shall be astonished and whosoever shall hear it 17 For thy servant is religious and serveth the God of heaven day and night now therefore my lord I will remain with thee and thy servant will go out by night into the valley and I will pray unto God and he will tell me when they have committed their sins 18 And I will come and shew it unto thee then thou shalt go forth with all thine army and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee 19 And I will lead thee through the midst of Judea until thou come before Jerusalem and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no shepherd and a dog shall not so much as ‖ Or. bark open his mouth at thee for ‖ Or. these things have I spoken these things were told me according to my foreknowledge and they were declared unto me and I am sent to tell thee 20 Then her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants and they marvelled at her wisdom and said 21 There is not such a woman from one end of the earth to the other both for beauty of face and wisdom of words 22 Likewise Holofernes said unto her God hath done well to send thee before the people that strength might be in our hands and destruction upon them that lightly regard my lord 23 And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance and witty in thy

XVII 1 Why the Egyptians were punished with darkness 4 The terrours of that darkness 11 The terrours of an ill conscience FOr great are thy judgements and cannot be expressed therefore ‖ Or souls that will not be reformed unnurtured souls have erred 2 For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation they being shut up ‖ Or under their roofs in their houses the prisoners of darkness and fettered with the bonds of a long night lay there ‖ Or fugitives exiled from the eternal providence 3 For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins they were scattered ‖ Or in undera dark vail of forgetfulness being horribly astonished and troubled with strange ‖ Or sights apparitions 4 For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances 5 No power of the fire might give them light neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night 6 Onely there appeared unto them a fire kindled of it self very dreadful for being much terrified they thought the things which they saw to be worse then the sight they saw not 7 * Ex. 7.12 8.7 19. As for the illusions of art magick they were put down and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace 8 For they that promised to drive away terrours and troubles from a sick soul were sick themselves of fear worthy to be laughed at 9 For though no terrible thing did fear them yet being scared with beasts that passed by and hissing of serpents 10 They died for fear ‖ Or 〈◊〉 susing to look upon denying that they saw the air which could of no side be avoided 11 For wickedness condemned by her own witness is very timorous and being pressed with conscience always foreca●seth grievous things 12 For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth 13 And the expectation from within being less counteth the ignorance more then the cause which bringeth the torment 14 But they sleeping the same sleep that night ‖ Or wherein they could do nothing which was indeed intolerable and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell 15 Were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions and partly fainted their heart failing them for a sudden fear and not looked for came upon them 16 So then whosoever there sell down was straitly kept shut up in a prison without iron bars 17 For whether he were husbandman or shepherd or a labourer in the ‖ Or desert field he was overtaken and endured that necessity which could not be avoided for they were all bound with one chain of darkness 18 Whether it were a whistling wind or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches or a pleasing fall of water running violently 19 Or a ‖ Or hideous terrible sound of stones cast down or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts or a roaring voice of most savage wilde beasts or a rebounding eccho from the hollow mountains these things made them to swoon for fear 20 For the whole world shined with clear light and none were hindred in their labour 21 Over them onely was spread an heavy night an image of that darkness which should afterward receive them but yet were they unto themselves more grievous then the darkness CHAP. XVIII 4 Why Egypt was punished with darkness 5 and with the death of their children 18 They themselves saw the cause thereof 20 God also plagued his own people 21 By what means that plague was stayed NEvertheless thy saints had a very great * Exod. 20.23 light whose voice they hearing and not seeing their shape because they also had not suffered the same things they counted them happy 2 But for that they did not hurt them now of whom they had been wronged before they thanked them and besought them pardon for that they had been enemies 3 * Ex. 13.21 14.24 Ps 78.14 105.39 In stead whereof thou gavest them a burning pillar of fire both to be a guide of the unknown journey and an harmless sun to entertain them honourably 4 For they were worthy to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness who had kept thy sons shut up by whom the ‖ Or incorruptible uncorrupt light of the law was to be given unto the world 5 * Exod. 14 ●4 25. For the righteous children of good men did sacrifice secretly and with one consent made ‖ Or a covenant of God or league See Psal 50.5 a holy law that the saints should be like partakers of the same good and evil the fathers now singing out the songs of praise 10 But on the other side there sounded an ill-according cry of the enemies and a lamentable noise was carried abroad for children that were bewailed 11 * Ex. 11.5 12.29 The master and the servant were punished after one manner and like as the king so suffered the common person 12 So they altogether had innumerable dead with one kinde of death neither were the living sufficient to bury them for in one moment the noblest offspring of them was destroyed 13 For whereas they would not beleeve any thing by reason of the inchantments upon the destruction of the first-born they acknowledged this people to be the sons of God 14 For while all things were in quiet silence and that night was in the midst of her swift course 15 Thine Almighty word leapt down from heaven out of thy royal throne as a fierce man of war into the midst of a land of destruction 16 And brought thine unfeigned commandment as a sharp sword and standing up filled all things with death and it touched the heaven but it stood upon the earth 17 Then suddenly ‖ Or imaginations visions of horrible dreams troubled them fore and terrours came upon them unlooked for 18 And one thrown here and another there half-dead shewed the cause of his death 19 For the dreams that troubled them did
is at rest but the life of the fool is worse then death 12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life 13 Talk not much with a fool and go not to him that hath no understanding * Ch. 12.12 beware of him lest thou have trouble and thou shalt never be defiled ‖ Or when ●e s●akes off in filth with his fooleries depart from him and thou shalt finde rest and never be ‖ Or wearied disquieted with madness 14 What is heavier then lead what is the name thereof but a fool 15 * Pro. 27.3 Sand and salt and a mass of iron is easier to bear then a man without understanding 16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time 17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering ‖ Or of a polished wall on the wall of a gallery 18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear 19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge 20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away and he that uphraideth his friend breaketh friendship 21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend yet despair not for there may be a returning to favour 22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend fear not for there may be a reconciliation except for upbraiding or pride or disclosing of secrets or a treacherous wound for for these things every friend will depart 23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty that thou mayest rejoyce in his prosperity abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage for a mean e●tate is not always to be contemned nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration 24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace gueth before the fire so reviling before bloud 25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend neither will I hide my fell from him 26 And if any evil happen unto me by him every one that heareth it will beware of him 27 * Psal 141.3 Who shall set a watch before my mouth and a seal of wisdom upon my lips that I fall not suddenly by them and that my tongue destroy me not CHAP. XXIII 1 A prayer for grace to flee sin 9 We may not use swearing 14 but remember our parents 16 Of three sorts of sin 23 The adulterous wife sinneth many ways O Lord Father and Governour of all my whole life leave me not to their counsels and let me not fall by them 2 Who will set scourges over my thoughts and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart that they spare me not for mine ignorances and it pass not by my sins 3 Lest mine ignorances increase and my sins abound to my destruction and I fall before mine adversaries and mine enemy rejoyce over me whose hope is far from thy mercy 4 O Lord Father and God of my life give me not a proud look but turn away from thy servants always ‖ Or a giant-like a haughty minde 5 Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee 6 Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me and give not over me thy servant into an impudent minde 7 Hear O ye children the discipline of the mouth he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips 8 The sinner shall be left in his foolishness both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby 9 * Ex. 20.7 Ch. 27.14 Mat. 5.33 34. temple 3 In his days the * 1 King 7.23 cistern to receive water being in compass as the sea was covered with plates of brass 4 He took care of the temple that it should not fall and fortified the city against besieging 5 How was he honoured in the midst of the people in his coming out of † Gr. the house of the ●●il the sanctuary 6 He was as the morning star in the midst of a cloud and as the moon at the full 7 As the sun shining upon the temple of the most High and as the rainbowe giving light in the bright clouds 8 And as the flower of roses in the spring of the year as lilies by the rivers of waters and as the branches of the frankincense tree in the time of summer 9 As fire and incense in the censer and as a vessel of beaten gold set with all manner of precious stones 10 And as a fair olive-tree budding forth fruit and as a cypress tree which groweth up to the clouds 11 When he put on the robe of honour and was clothed with the perfection of glory when he went up to the holy altar he made the garment of holiness honourable 12 When he took the portions out of the priests hands he himself stood by the hearth of the altar compassed with his brethren round about as a young cedar in Libanus and as palm-trees compassed they him round about 13 So were all the sons of Aaron in their glory and the oblations of the Lord in their hands before all the congregation of Israel 14 And finishing the service at the altar that he might adorn the offering of the most high Almighty 15 He stretched out his hand to the cup and poured of the bloud of the grape he poured out at the foot of the altar a sweet-smelling savour unto the most high King of all 16 Then shouted the sons of Aaron and sounded the ‖ Or trumpets beacon forth with the 〈◊〉 silver trumpets and made a great noise to be heard for a remembrance before the most High 17 Then all the people together hasted and fell down to the earth upon their faces to worship their Lord God almighty the most High 18 The singers also sang praises with their voices with great variety of sounds was there made sweet melody 19 And the people besought the Lord the most High by prayer before him that is merciful till the solemnity of the Lord was ended and they had finished his service 20 Then he went down and lifted up his hands over the whose congregation of the children of Israel to give the blessing of the Lord with his lips and to rejoyce in his name 21 And they bowed themselves down to worship the second time that they might receive a blessing from the most High 22 Now therefore bless ye the God of all which onely doth wondrous things every where which exalteth our days from the womb and dealeth with us according to his mercy 23 He grant us joyfulness of heart and that peace may be in our days in Israel for ever 24 That he would confirm his mercy with us and deliver us at his time 25 There be two manner of nations which my heart abhorreth and the third is no nation 26 They that sit upon the mountain of Samaria and they that dwell amongst the Philistines and that foolish people that dwell in Sichem 27 Jesus the son of Sirach of Jerusalem hath written in this book the instruction of understanding and knowledge who out of his heart poured forth wisdom 28 Blessed is he that shall be exercised in these things and he that sayeth them up in his heart shall become wise 20 For if he do them he shall be strong to all things for the light of the Lord leadeth him who giveth wisdom to the godly Blesses be the Lord forever Amen amen CHAP. LI. ¶ A prayer of Jesus the son of Sirach I Will thank thee O Lord and King and praise thee O God my Saviour I do give praise unto thy name 2 For thou art my defender and helper and hast preserved my body from destruction and from the snare of the slandrous tongue and from the lips that forge lies and hast been mine helper against mine adversaries 3 And hast delivered me according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy name from † Gr. the gnashing of the teeth the teeth of them that were ready to devour me and out of the hands of such as sought after my life and from the manifold afflictions which I had 4 From the choking of fire on every side and from the mids of the fire which I kindled not 5 From the depth of the besly of hell from an unclean tongue and from sying words 6 By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death my life was near to the hell beneath 7 They compassed me on every side and there was no man to help me I looked for the succour of men but there was none 8 Then thought I upon thy mercy O Lord and upon thy acts of old how thou deliverest such as wait for thee and savest them out of the hands of the enemies 9 Then lifted I up my supplication from the earth and prayed for deliverance from death 10 I called upon the Lord the Father of my Lord that he would not leave me in the days of my trouble and in the time of the proud when there was no help 11 I will praise thy name continually and will sing praise with thanksgiving and so my prayer was heard 12 For thou savedst me from destruction and deliveredst me from the evil time therefore will I give thanks and praise thee and bless thy name O Lord. 13 When I was yet young or ever I ‖ Or went astray went abroad I desired wisdom openly in my prayer 14 I prayed for her before the temple and will seek here out even to the end 15 Even from the flower till the grape was ripe hath my heart delighted in her my foot went the right way from my youth up sought I after her 16 I howed down mine ear a little and received her and gat much learning 17 I profited therein therefore will I ascribe the glory unto him that giveth me wisdom 18 For I purposed to do after her and earnestly I followed that which is good so shall I not be confounded 19 My soul hath wrestled with her and in my doings I was exact I stretched forth my hands to the heaven above and bewailed my ignorances of her 20 ‖ Or I got understanding I directed my soul unto her and I found her in pureness I have had my heart joyned with her from the beginning therefore shall I not be forsaken 21 My ‖ Or bow●l● heart was troubled in seeking her therefore have I gotten a good possession 22 The Lord hath given me a tongue for my reward and I will

seducer of the people 14 Peter and John come to confirm and enlarge the church where by prayer and imposition of hands giving the holy Ghost 18 when Simon would have bought the like power of them 20 Peter sharply reproving his hypocrisie and covetousness and exhorting him to repentance together with John preaching the word of the Lord return to Jerusalem 26 But the angel sendeth Philip to teach and baptize the Ethiopian eunuch ANd Saul was consenting unto his death And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria except the apostles 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him 3 As for Saul he made havock of the church entring into every house and haling men and women committed them to prison 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake hearing and seeing the miracles which he did 7 For unclean spirits crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them and many taken with palsies and that were lame were healed 8 And there was great joy in that city 9 But there was a certain man called Simon which before-time in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the people of Samaria giving out that himself was some great one 10 To whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying This man is the great power of God 11 And to him they had regard because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries 12 But when they beleeved Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women 13 Then Simon himself beleeved also and when he was baptized he continued with Philip and wondred beholding the miracles and signs which were done 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God they sent unto them Peter John 15 Who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the holy Ghost 16 For as yet he was fa●n upon none of them onely they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus 17 Then laid they their hands on them and they received the holy Ghost 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the holy Ghost was given he offered them money 19 Saying Give me also this power that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the holy Ghost 20 But Peter said unto him Thy money perish with thee because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter for thy heart is not right in the sight of God 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of imquity 24 Then answered Simon and said Pray ye to the Lord for me that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me 25 And they when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord returned to Jerusalem and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans 26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip saying Arise and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza which is desert 27 And he arose and went and behold a man of Ethiopia an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians who had the charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem for to worship 28 Was returning and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip Go near and joyn thy self to this chariot 30 And Philip ran thither to him and heard him read the prophet Esaias and said Understandest thou what thou readest 31 And he said How can I except some man should guide me and he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this * Isa 53.7 He was led as a sheep to the slaughter and like a lamb dumb before his shearer so opened he not his mouth 33 In his humiliation his judgement was taken away and who shall declare his generation for his life is taken from the earth 34 And the eunuch answered Philip and said I pray thee of whom speaketh the prophet this of himself or of some other man 35 Then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same scripture and preached unto him Jesus 36 And as they went on their way they came unto a certain water and the eunuch said See here is water what doth hinder me to be baptized 37 And Philip said If thou beleevest with all thine heart thou mayest And he answered and said I beleeve that Jesus Christ is the Son of God 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still and they went down both into the water both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized
old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were † Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give † Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond † Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP.
