work_n justify_v this_o will_v appear_v evident_a by_o the_o example_n of_o st._n paul_n who_o though_o he_o be_v not_o conscious_a to_o himself_o of_o any_o wickedness_n yet_o he_o dare_v not_o affirm_v himself_o to_o be_v thereby_o justify_v i_o think_v nothing_o hinder_v but_o the_o whole_a argument_n may_v be_v yield_v unto_o if_o so_o be_v the_o term_n be_v right_o place_v the_o hence_o therefore_o as_o they_o say_v dead_a faith_n without_o work_n do_v not_o justify_v and_o i_o deny_v it_o not_o but_o what_o conclusion_n flow_v from_o this_o manner_n of_o argue_v therefore_o only_a faith_n do_v not_o justiste_v why_o so_o if_o no_o faith_n but_o that_o which_o be_v lively_a justify_v and_o if_o it_o receive_v life_n only_o from_o work_n than_o this_o be_v the_o consequence_n that_o faith_n justify_v only_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o good_a work_n i_o answer_v first_o though_o we_o grant_v it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o faith_n which_o justify_v we_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v lively_a and_o always_o join_v with_o a_o godly_a life_n yet_o that_o this_o faith_n justify_v and_o reconcile_v we_o no_o other_o way_n but_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o good_a work_n be_v most_o false_a for_o this_o be_v not_o a_o good_a consequence_n from_o the_o premise_n because_o faith_n be_v not_o alone_o in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o believer_n therefore_o faith_n be_v not_o alone_o in_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v or_o because_o the_o faith_n that_o justify_v be_v not_o a_o dead_a but_o a_o lively_a faith_n therefore_o it_o do_v not_o justify_v alone_o without_o work_n for_o herein_o be_v a_o fallacy_n of_o the_o consequence_n but_o you_o may_v object_v whence_o then_o be_v faith_n say_v to_o be_v lively_a and_o not_o dead_a but_o from_o work_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v draw_v all_o its_o life_n and_o virtue_n from_o work_n nay_o the_o matter_n be_v quite_o contrary_a for_o though_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n faith_n be_v not_o discern_v to_o be_v lively_a and_o vigorous_a but_o by_o work_n yet_o faith_n receive_v not_o life_n from_o work_n but_o rather_o work_v from_o faith_n as_o fruit_n draw_v their_o life_n and_o sap_n from_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n but_o not_o the_o root_n thereby_o from_o they_o just_o so_o external_a action_n proceed_v from_o faith_n as_o the_o root_n which_o if_o they_o be_v good_a they_o evidence_n the_o root_n to_o be_v sound_a and_o lively_a and_o this_o be_v all_o they_o do_v but_o they_o communicate_v no_o life_n thereunto_o and_o this_o life_n and_o virtue_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o one_o but_o twofold_a and_o it_o act_v faith_n partly_o in_o heaven_n and_o partly_o in_o earth_n if_o you_o ask_v what_o it_o do_v among_o man_n upon_o earth_n it_o do_v good_a to_o its_o neighbour_n work_v by_o love_n but_o before_o god_n in_o heaven_n it_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a not_o by_o love_n but_o by_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v true_a in_o the_o external_n action_n of_o human_a life_n in_o which_o faith_n lie_v like_o a_o dead_a thing_n unless_o it_o be_v enliven_v by_o charity_n to_o the_o exercise_n of_o good_a work_n and_o hereunto_o belong_v that_o say_n of_o paul_n whereby_o he_o so_o much_o commend_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n understand_v faith_n such_o work_n as_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n bring_v forth_o to_o the_o view_n of_o a_o human_a eye_n yet_o with_o god_n faith_n have_v a_o far_o different_a operation_n for_o it_o only_o without_o any_o reliance_n upon_o work_n or_o assistance_n of_o charity_n but_o trust_v to_o the_o naked_a promise_n of_o god_n and_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o mediator_n climb_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o get_v access_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n where_o it_o do_v great_a and_o wonderful_a thing_n combat_v with_o the_o judgement_n to_o come_v fight_v against_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n satan_n and_o hell_n plead_v the_o cause_n of_o a_o sinner_n obtain_v his_o pardon_n absolve_n and_o justify_v he_o from_o the_o accusation_n of_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n take_v away_o all_o iniquity_n reconcile_v god_n to_o the_o sinner_n because_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o law_n so_o holy_a and_o perfect_a but_o it_o appear_v as_o evident_a in_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o efficacy_n and_o manner_n of_o work_v which_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o law_n exercise_n in_o other_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o effect_n and_o end_n of_o both_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n for_o though_o christ_n be_v no_o otherwise_o just_a in_o himself_o than_o the_o law_n itself_o be_v holy_a and_o just_a but_o yet_o this_o which_o be_v call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n act_n in_o we_o much_o otherwise_o than_o that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n so_o that_o nothing_o seem_v more_o unlike_a or_o more_o contrary_a the_o difference_n between_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n first_o as_o touch_v the_o law_n what_o the_o nature_n virtue_n and_o law_n efficacy_n thereof_o be_v it_o be_v unknown_a to_o no_o man_n to_o wit_n that_o it_o be_v of_o itself_o a_o holy_a and_o perfect_a rule_n and_o mistress_n to_o teach_v how_o to_o lead_v the_o life_n make_v for_o this_o purpose_n by_o the_o most_o holy_a god_n that_o creature_n may_v certain_o know_v what_o they_o shall_v fly_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v follow_v as_o it_o contain_v in_o itself_o the_o very_a rule_n of_o all_o natural_o have_v a_o enmity_n against_o god_n so_o it_o can_v avoid_v be_v contrary_a to_o his_o sacred_a will_n and_o divine_a institution_n and_o hence_o break_v forth_o so_o many_o and_o so_o great_a calamity_n that_o fall_v upon_o this_o sinful_a nature_n of_o we_o hence_o so_o many_o proof_n of_o the_o divine_a indignation_n and_o anger_n hence_o also_o that_o dreadful_a and_o unavoidable_a necessity_n of_o die_v which_o when_o it_o pass_v promiscuous_o through_o all_o age_n and_o kindred_n which_o none_o of_o the_o most_o holy_a man_n can_v ever_o drive_v away_o from_o themselves_o very_o that_o one_o thing_n prove_v we_o all_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o unrighteousness_n and_o that_o there_o be_v not_o any_o perfection_n of_o righteousness_n in_o our_o most_o simple_o affirm_v faith_n to_o be_v a_o gift_n of_o god_n without_o charity_n but_o he_o speak_v figurative_o to_o amplify_v the_o praise_n of_o charity_n as_o he_o that_o say_v though_o i_o have_v a_o hundred_o tongue_n and_o as_o many_o mouth_n yet_o i_o can_v not_o full_o set_v forth_o the_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v he_o do_v not_o therefore_o presuppose_v that_o there_o be_v any_o man_n who_o no_o tongue_n but_o it_o be_v feign_v by_o way_n of_o amplification_n to_o signify_v some_o excellent_a tongue_n surpass_v those_o that_o be_v human_a thus_o he_o say_v if_o what_o have_v be_v hitherto_o say_v do_v not_o satisfy_v the_o adversary_n i_o answer_v thus_o that_o this_o speech_n of_o paul_n belong_v not_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o justification_n but_o to_o the_o life_n of_o good_a gift_n abound_v in_o you_o that_o have_v all_o sufficiency_n in_o all_o thing_n etc._n etc._n in_o like_a manner_n in_o this_o place_n of_o paul_n if_o i_o have_v all_o faith_n that_o be_v the_o most_o perfect_a faith_n of_o work_a miracle_n so_o that_o i_o can_v remove_v mountain_n etc._n etc._n another_o place_n out_o of_o paul_n 1_o cor._n 13._o now_o these_o three_o remain_n faith_n hope_n and_o charity_n but_o the_o great_a of_o these_o be_v charity_n argument_n our_o justification_n flow_v from_o 13._o the_o more_o worthy_a cause_n charity_n be_v a_o thing_n more_o worthy_a and_o great_a than_o faith_n therefore_o we_o be_v justify_v more_o by_o charity_n than_o by_o faith_n or_o if_o you_o will_v rather_o take_v it_o thus_o if_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o charity_n faith_n will_v be_v great_a than_o charity_n but_o charity_n be_v great_a than_o faith_n therefore_o we_o be_v justify_v rather_o by_o charity_n than_o by_o faith_n answer_n that_o i_o may_v brief_o answer_v both_o these_o argument_n first_o let_v we_o right_o conceive_v not_o only_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n but_o in_o what_o sense_n he_o speak_v they_o these_o three_o remain_v say_v he_o but_o the_o great_a of_o these_o be_v charity_n in_o which_o word_n we_o hear_v the_o apostle_n prefer_v charity_n before_o faith_n and_o we_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v true_a but_o let_v we_o see_v in_o what_o sense_n it_o be_v true_a i_o will_v make_v use_n of_o a_o argument_n like_o it_o there_o have_v not_o rise_v a_o 11._o great_a than_o john_n the_o baptist_n among_o those_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o woman_n therefore_o john_n the_o baptist_n must_v be_v great_a than_o christ._n i_o answer_v from_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o scripture_n though_o christ_n seem_v less_o than_o john_n the_o baptist_n by_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o general_a opinion_n of_o people_n yet_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n he_o be_v and_o always_o will_v be_v great_a than_o john_n we_o may_v observe_v something_o like_o this_o in_o faith_n and_o charity_n though_o in_o this_o world_n in_o man_n deal_n with_o one_o another_o mutual_a charity_n have_v the_o preeminence_n yet_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n that_o be_v in_o our_o concernment_n with_o god_n against_o satan_n death_n sin_n the_o judgement_n of_o god_n his_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n and_o the_o terror_n of_o charity_n conscience_n faith_n do_v so_o far_o excel_v that_o it_o only_o have_v the_o dominion_n not_o only_o above_o charity_n but_o also_o without_o it_o if_o the_o dignity_n and_o excellency_n of_o any_o thing_n be_v discernible_a by_o its_o effect_n and_o performance_n as_o a_o tree_n be_v know_v by_o its_o fruit_n let_v we_o now_o compare_v these_o virtue_n with_o one_o another_o that_o it_o may_v the_o better_o appear_v what_o each_o of_o they_o can_v do_v what_o be_v the_o efficacy_n of_o charity_n what_o faith_n perform_v and_o how_o much_o it_o excel_v and_o first_o as_o touch_v charity_n and_o its_o office_n let_v we_o hear_v how_o charity_n great_o the_o apostle_n commend_v it_o charity_n say_v he_o be_v patient_a and_o bountiful_a and_o courteous_a fit_v for_o every_o condition_n of_o life_n charity_n do_v not_o envy_n do_v not_o behave_v itself_o unseemly_a be_v not_o puff_v up_o seek_v not_o its_o own_o thing_n but_o seek_v the_o good_a of_o all_o it_o be_v not_o easy_o offend_v nor_o desirous_a of_o revenge_n and_o though_o it_o suffer_v injury_n it_o devise_v not_o to_o do_v evil_a to_o any_o man_n it_o delight_v not_o in_o the_o wickedness_n of_o the_o wicked_a but_o rejoice_v in_o the_o truth_n it_o suffer_v all_o thing_n believe_v all_o thing_n hope_n all_o thing_n endure_v all_o thing_n wait_v for_o better_a with_o a_o undefatigable_a expectation_n though_o other_o thing_n duration_n may_v fail_v though_o prophecy_n and_o miracle_n and_o knowledge_n may_v cease_v yet_o charity_n will_v never_o fail_v mutual_a love_n will_v endure_v for_o ever_o hitherto_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o apostle_n set_v forth_o the_o duty_n and_o office_n of_o charity_n with_o deserve_a praise_n which_o though_o they_o be_v exceed_o great_a and_o magnificent_a and_o can_v be_v sufficient_o commend_v by_o any_o man_n according_a to_o their_o worth_n yet_o such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o these_o office_n of_o charity_n that_o they_o pass_v heaven_n not_o beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o this_o mortal_a life_n and_o the_o mutual_a communion_n of_o christian_n with_o one_o another_o but_o now_o let_v we_o raise_v up_o our_o mind_n as_o high_a as_o we_o can_v to_o contemplate_v the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n and_o what_o it_o do_v not_o only_o upon_o the_o earth_n but_o in_o heaven_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n whilst_o charity_n be_v exercise_v in_o this_o inferior_a world_n among_o man_n faith_n ascend_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n where_o first_o by_o a_o sublime_a contemplation_n it_o lay_v hold_v on_o the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o mediator_n at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o majesty_n
