therefore wrote this song the same day and taught it the children of Israel 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge and said * Jos 1.6 Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them and I will be with thee 24 ¶ And it came to pass when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book until they were finished 25 That Moses commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD saying 26 Take this book of the law and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God that it may be there for a witness against thee 27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck behold while I am yet alive with you this day ye have been rebellious against the LORD and how much more after my death 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to record against them 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt your selves and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you and evil will befal you in the latter days because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song until they were ended CHAP. XXXII 1 Moses song which setteth forth Gods mercy and vengeance 46 He exhorteth them to set their hearts upon it 48 God sendeth him up to mount Nebo to see the land and die GIve ear O ye heavens and I will speak and hear O earth the words of my mouth 2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain my speech shall distil as the dew as the small rain upon the tender herb and as the showers upon the grass 3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD ascribe ye greatness unto our God 4 He is the Rock his work is perfect for all his ways are judgement a God of truth and without iniquity just and right is he 5 †Heb. he hath corrupted to himself They have corrupted themselves ‖ Or that they are not his children that is their blot their spot is not the spot of his children they are a perverse and crooked generation 6 Do ye thus requite the LORD O foolish people and unwise is not he thy father that hath bought thee hath he not made thee and established thee 7 ¶ Remember the days of old consider the years of †Heb. generation and generation many generations ask thy father and he will shew thee thy elders and they will tell thee 8 When the most high divided to the nations their inheritance when he separated the sons of Adam he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel 9 For the LORDs portion is his people Jacob is the †Heb. cord lot of his inheritance 10 He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness he ‖ Or compassed him about led him about he instructed him he kept him as the apple of his eye 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest fluttereth over her young spreadeth abroad her wings taketh them beareth them on her wings 12 So the LORD alone did lead him and there was no strange god with him 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oyl out of the flinty rock 14 Butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats with the fat of kidneys of wheat and thou didst drink the pure bloud of the grape 15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked thou art waxen fat thou art grown thick thou art covered with fatness then he forsook God which made him lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation 16 They provoked him to jealousie with strange gods with abominations provoked they him to anger 17 They sacrificed unto devils ‖ Or which were not God not to God to gods whom they knew not to new gods that came newly up whom your fathers feared not 18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten God that formed thee 19 And when the LORD saw it he ‖ Or despised abhorred them because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters 20 And he said I will hide my face from them I will see what their end shall be for they are a very froward generation children in whom is no faith 21 They have moved me to jealousie with that which is not god they have provoked me to anger with their vanities and * Rom. 10.19 I will move them to jealousie with those which are not a people I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation 22 For a fire is kindled in my anger and ‖ Or hath burned shall burn unto the lowest hell and ‖ Or hath consumed shall consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them I will spend mine arrows upon them 24 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with †Heb. burning â—oals burning heat and wâ—th bitter destruction I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them with the poyson of serpents of the dust 25 The sword without and terrour †Heb. from the chambers within shall †Heb. bereave destroy both the young man and the virgin the suckling also with the man of gray hairs 26 I said I would scatter them into corners I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men 27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely and lest they should say ‖ Or Our high hand and not the LORD hath done all this Our hand is high and the LORD hath not done all this 28 For they are a nation void of counsel neither is there any understanding in them 29 O that they were wise that they understood this that they would consider their latter end 30 How should * Jos 23.10 one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight except their Rock had sold them and the LORD had shut them up 31 For their rock is not as our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges 32 For their vine ‖ Or is worse then the vine of Sodom c. is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah their grapes are grapes of gall their clusters are bitter 33 Their wine is the poyson of dragons and the cruel venome of asps 34 Is not this laid up in store with
bless thee 5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers Whose damsel is this 6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the countrey of Moab 7 And she said I pray you let me glean and gather after the reapers amongst the sheaves so she came and hath continued even from the morning until now that she tarried a little in the house 8 Then said Boaz unto Ruth Hearest thou not my daughter Go not to glean in another field neither go from hence but abide here fast by my maidens 9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap and go thou after them have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee and when thou art athirst go unto the vessels and drink or that which the young men have drawn 10 Then she tell on her face and bowed her self to the ground and said unto him Why have I found grace in thine eyes that thou shouldest take knowledge of me seeing I am a stranger 11 And Boaz answered and said unto her It hath fully been shewed me all tha thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother and the land of thy nativity and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore 12 The LORD recompense thy work and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel under whose wings thou art come to trust 13 Then she said ‖ Or I finde favour Let me finde favour in thy sight my lord for that thou hast comforted me and for that thou hast spoken †Heb. to the heart friendly unto thine hand-maid though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens 14 And Boaz said unto her At meal-time come thou hither and eat of the bread and dip thy morsel in the vineger And she sat beside the reapers he reached her parched corn and she did eat was sufficed and left 15 And when she was risen up to glean Boaz commanded his young men saying Let her glean even among the sheaves and †Heb. shame her not reproach her not 16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her and leave them that she may glean them and rebuke her not 17 So she gleaned in the field until even and beat out that she had gleaned and it was about an ephah of barley 18 ¶ And she took it up and went into the city and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned and she brought forth and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed 19 And her mother in law said unto her Where hast thou gleaned to day and where wroughtest thou blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought and said The mans name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz. 20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law Blessed be he of the LORD who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead And Naomi said unto her The man is near of kin unto us ‖ Or one that hath richt to redeem one of our next kinsmen 21 And Ruth the Moabitess said He said unto me also Thou shalt keep fast by my young men until they have ended all my harvest 22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law It is good my daughter that thou go out with his maidens that they ‖ Or fall upon thee meet thee not in any other field 23 So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley-harvest and of wheat-harvest and dwelt with her mother in law CHAP. III. 1 By Naomi her instruction 5 Ruth lieth at Boaz his feet 8 Boaz acknowledgeth the right of a kinsman 14 He sendeth her away with six measures of barley THen Naomi her mother in law said unto her My daughter shall I not seek rest for thee that it may be well with thee 2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred with whose maidens thou wast Behold he winnoweth barley to night in the threshing-floor 3 Wash thy self therefore and anoint thee and put thy raiment upon thee and get thee down to the floor but make not thy self known unto the man until he shall have done eating and drinking 4 And it shall be when he lieth down that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie and thou shalt go in and ‖ Or lift up the clothes that are on his feet uncover his feet and lay thee down and he will tell thee what thou shalt do 5 And she said unto her All that thou sayest unto me I will do 6 ¶ And she went down unto the floor and did according to all that her mother in law bade her 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn and she came soltly and uncovered his feet and laid her down 8 ¶ And it came to pass at midnight that the man was afraid and ‖ Or took hold on turned himself and behold a woman lay at his feet 9 And he said who art thou And she answered I am Ruth thine hand-maid spread therefore thy skirt over thine hand-maid for thou art ‖ Or one that hath right to redeem a near kinsman 10 And he said Blessed be thou of the LORD my daughter for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end then at the beginning inasmuch as thou followedst not young men whether poor or rich 11 And now my daughter fear not I will do to thee all that thou requirest for all the †Heb. gate city of my people doth know that thou art a vertuous woman 12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman howbeit there is a kinsman nearer then I. 13 Tarry this night and it shall be in the morning that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman well let him do the kinsmans part but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee as the LORD liveth lie down until the morning 14 ¶ And she lay at his feet until the morning and she arose up before one could know another And he said Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor 15 Also he said Bring the ‖ Or sheet or apron vail that thou hast upon thee and hold it And when she held it he measured six nuasâ—res of barley and said it on her and she went into the city 16 And when she came to her mother in law she said Who art thou my daughter and she told her all that the man had done to her 17 And she said These six measures of barley gave he me
earth thou hast made heaven earth 16 LORD bow down thine ear and hear open LORD thine eyes and see and hear the words of Sennacherib which hath sent him to reproach the living God 17 Of a truth LORD the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands 18 And have †Heb. given cast their gods into the fire for they were no gods but the work of mens hands wood and stone therefore they have destroyed them 19 Now therefore O LORD our God I beseech thee save thou us out of his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God even thou onely 20 ¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah saying Thus saith the LORD God of Israel That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard 21 This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee 22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lift up thine eyes on high even against the holy One of Israel 23 †Heb. by the hand of By thy messengers thou hast reproached the LORD and hast said With the multâ—tude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains to the sides of Lehanon and will cut down †Heb. the tainess c. the tall cedar trees thereof and the choice fir-trees thereof and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders and into ‖ Or the forest and his fruitful field the forest of his Carmel 24 I have digged and drunk strange waters and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of ‖ Or fentel besieged places 25 ‖ Or Hast thou not heard how I have made it long ago and formed it of ancient times should I now bring it to be laid waste and senced cities to be ruinous heaps Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it and of ancient times that I have formed it now have I brought it to pass that thou shouldest be to lay waste tenced cities into ruinous heaps 26 Therefore their inhabitants were †Heb. short of cand of small power they were dismayed and confounded they were as the grass of the field and as the green herb as the grass on the hous-tops and as corn blasted before it be grown up 27 But I know thy ‖ Or sitting abode and thy going out and thy coming in and thy rage against me 28 Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears therefore I will put my hook in thy nose and my bridle in thy lips and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest 29 And this shall be a signe unto thee Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves and in the second year that which springeth of the same and in the third year sowe ye and reap and plant vineyards and eat the fruits thereof 30 And †Heb. the escapinâ— of the house of Judah that remaineth the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward and bear fruit upward 31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant and †Heb. the escaping they that escape out of mount Zion the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this 32 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria He shall not come into this city nor shoot an arrow there nor come before it with shield nor cast a bank against it 33 By the way that he came by the same shall he return and shall not come into this city saith the LORD 34 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake and for my servant Davids sake 35 ¶ And * Isa 37.36 Ecclus 48.21 1 Mac. â— 41 2 Mac. 8.19 it came to pass that night that the angel of the LORD went out and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand and when they arose early in the morning behold they were all dead corpses 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh 37 And it came to pass as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god that Adrammelech and Sharezer * Tob. 1.21 his sons smote him with the sword and they escaped into the land of †Heb. Aâ—â—rat Armenia and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XX. 1 Hezekiah having received a message of death by prayer hath his life lengthned 8 The sun â—oeth ten degrees backward for a signe of that promise 12 Berodach-baladan sending to visit Hezekiah because of the wonder hath notice of his treasures 14 Isaiah understanding thereof foretelleth the Babylonian captivity 20 Manasseh succeedeth Hezekiah IN * 2 Chr. 32.24 Isa 3â— 1 those days was Hezekiah sick unto death and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him and said unto him Thus saith the LORD †Heb. give charge concerning thine house Set thine house in order for thou shalt die and not live 2 Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed unto the LORD saying 3 I beseech thee O LORD remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart and have done that which is good in thy sight and Hezekiah wept †Heb. with a great weeping sore 4 And it came to pass afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle ‖ Or city court that the word of the LORD came to him saying 5 Turn again and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people Thus saith the LORD the God of David thy father I have heard thy prayer I have seen thy tears behold I will heal thee on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD 6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria and I will defend this city for mine own sake and for my servant Davids sake 7 And Isaiah said Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boyl and he recovered 8 ¶ And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah What shall be the signe that the LORD will heal me and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day 9 And Isaiah said This signe shalt thou have of the LORD that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go back ten degrees 10 And Hezekiah answered It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees nay but let the shadow return backward ten degrees 11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD and * Isa 28.8 Ecclus 48.23 he brought the shadow ten
10 He encourageth Solomon to build the temple 11 He giveth him patterns for the form and gold and silver for the materials ANd David assembled all the princes of Israel the princes of the tribes and the captains of the companies that ministred to the king by course and the captains over the thousands and captains over the hundreds and the stewards over all the substance and ‖ Or cattel possession of the king and of his sons with the ‖ Or eunuâ—hâ— officers and with the mighty men and with all the valiant men unto Jerusalem 2 Then David the king stood up upon his feet and said Hear me my brethren and my people As for me I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD and for the footstool of our God and had made ready for the building 3 But God said unto me * 2 Sam. 7.5 13. 1 Kin. 5.5 Chap. 22.8 Thou shalt not build an house for my name because thou hast been a man of war and hast shed †Heb. blouds bloud 4 Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever for he hath chosen * Gen. 49.8 1 Sam. 16.13 Ps 78.68 Judah to be the ruler and of the house of Judah the house of my father and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel 5 * Ch. 23.5 And of all my sons for the LORD hath given me many sons he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel 6 And he said unto me * 2 Sam. 7.13 2 Chr. 1.9 Solomon thy son he shall build my house and my courts for I have chosen him to be my son and I will be his father 7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever if he be †Heb. strong constant to do my commandments and my judgements as at this day 8 Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD and in the audience of our God keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God that ye may possess this good land and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever 9 ¶ And thou Solomon my son know thou the God of thy father and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing minde for * 1 Sam. 16.7 Ps 7.9 139.2 Jer. 11.20 17.10 20.12 the LORD searcheth all hearts and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts if thou seek him he will be found of thee but if thou forsake him he will cast thee off for ever 10 Take heed now for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary be strong and do it 11 ¶ Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch and of the houses thereof and of the treasuries thereof and of the upper chambers thereof and of the inner parlours thereof and of the place of the mercy-seat 12 And the pattern †Heb. of all that was with him of all that he had by the spirit of the courts of the house of the LORD and of all the chambers round about of the treasuries of the house of God and of the treasuries of the dedicate things 13 Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD 14 He gave of gold by weight for things of gold for all instruments of all manner of service silver also for all instruments of silver by weight for all instruments of every kind of service 15 Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold and for their lamps of gold by weight for every candlestick and for the lamps thereof and for the candlesticks of silver by weight both for the candlestick and also for the lamps thereof according to the use of every candlestick 16 And by weight he gave gold for the tables of shew-bread for every table and likewise silver for the tables of silver 17 Also pure gold for the flesh-hooks and the bowls and the cups and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver 18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the * 1 Sam. 6.4 cherubims that spread out their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD 19 All this said David the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me even all the works of this pattern 20 And David said to Solomon his son Be strong and of good courage and do it fear not nor be dismayed for the LORD God even my God will be with thee he will not fail thee nor forsake thee until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD 21 And behold the courses of the priests and the Levites even theâ— shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man for any manner of service also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy commandment CHAP. XXIX 1 David by his example and intreaty 6 causeth the princes and people to offer willingly 10 Davids thanksgiving and prayer 20 The people having blessed God and sacrificed make Solomon king 26 Davids reign and death FUrthermore David the king said unto all the congregation Solomon my son whom alone God hath chosen is yet * Chap. 22. â— young and tender and the work is great for the palace is not for man but for the LORD God 2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold and the silver for things of silver and the brass for things of brass the iron for things of iron and wood for things of wood onyx-stones and stones to be set glistring stones and of divers colours and all manner of precious stones and marble-stones in abundance 3 Moreover because I have set my affection to the house of my God I have of mine own proper good of gold and silver which I have given to the house of my God over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house 4 Even three thousand talents of gold of the gold of * 1 King 9.28 Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver to overlay the walls of the houses withal 5 The gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers And who then is willing †Heb. to fâ—ll his â—â—nd to consecrate his service this day unto

XXI THe kings heart is in the hand of the LORD as the rivers of water he turneth it whithersoever he will 2 * Ch. 16.2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes but the LORD pondereth the hearts 3 * 1 Sa. 15.22 Chap. 15.8 Isa 1.11 Hos 6.6 Mic. 6.7 8. XIV 1 A good conscience maketh men happy 5 The niggard doeth good to none 13 But do thou good 20 Men are happy that draw near to wisdom * Ch. 19.16 25.8 Jam. 3.2 BLessed is the man that hath not slipt with his mouth and is not pricked with the ‖ Or sorrow multitude of sins 2 Blessed is he whose conscience hath not condemned him and who is not faln from his hope in the Lord. 3 Riches are not comely for a niggard and what should an envious man do with money 4 He that gathereth by defrauding his own soul gathereth for others that shall spend his goods riotously 5 He that is evil to himself to whom will he be good he shall not take pleasure in his goods 6 There is none worse then he that envieth himself and this is a recompence of his wickedness 7 And if he doeth good he doeth it unwillingly and at the last he will declare his wickedness 8 The envious man hath a wicked eye he turneth away his sace and despiseth men 9 A * Prov. 27. â—â— covetous mans eye is not satisfied with his portion and the iniquity of the wicked drieth up his soul 10 A wicked eye envieth his bread and he is a niggard at his table 11 My son according to thy ability do good to thy self and give the Lord his due offering 12 Remember that death will not be long in coming and that the covenant of the grave is not shewed unto thee 13 * Tob. 4.7 Luk. 14 1â— Do good unto thy friend before thou die and according to thy ability stretch out thy hand and give to him 14 Defraud not thy self of †Or the feast-day the good day and let not the part of a good desire overpass thee 15 Shalt thou not leave thy travels unto another and thy labour to be divided by lot 16 Give and take and sanctifie thy soul for there is no seeking of dainties in the grave 17 * Isa 40.6 Jam. 1.10.1 Pet. 1.24 All flesh waxeth old as a garment for the covenant from the beginning is Thou shalt die the death 18 As of the green leaves on a thick tree some fall and some grow so is the generation of flesh and bloud one cometh to an end and another is born 19 Every work rotteth and consumeth away and the worker thereof shall go withal 20 * Psal 1.2 Blessed is the man that doth meditate good things in wisdom and that reasoneth of holy things by his understanding 21 He that considereth her ways in his heart shall also have understanding in her secrets 22 Go after her as one that traceth and lie in wait in her ways 23 He that prieth in at her windows shall also hearken at her doors 24 He that doth lodge near her house shall also fasten a ‖ Or stake pin in her walls 25 He shall pitch his tent nigh unto her and shall lodge in a lodging where good things are 26 He shall set his children under her shelter and shall lodge under her branches 27 By her he shall be covered from heat and in her glory shall he dwell CHAP.
XV. 2 Wisdom embraceth those that fear God 7 The wicked shall not get her 11 We may not charge God with our faults 14 For be made and left us to our selves HE that feareth the Lord will do good and he that hath the knowledge of the law shall obtain her 2 And as a mother shall she meet him and receive him as a wife married of a virgin 3 With the bread of understanding shall she feed him and give him the water of wisdom to drink 4 He shall be stayed upon her and shall not be moved and shall relie upon her and shall not be confounded 5 She shall exalthim above his neighbours and in the midst of the congregation shall she open his mouth 6 He shall finde joy and a crown of gladness and she shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name 7 But foolish men shall not attain unto her and sinners shall not see her 8 For she is far from pride and men that are liars cannot remember her 9 ‖ Or a parable Praise is not seemly in the mouth of a sinner for ‖ Or be was not sent of c. it was not sent him of the Lord. 10 For ‖ Or rather a parable praise shall be uttered in wisdom and the Lord will prosper it 11 Say not thou It is through the Lord that I fell away for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth 12 Say not thou He hath caused me to err for he hath no need of the sinful man 13 The Lord hateth all abomination and they that fear God love it not 14 He himself * Gen. 1.26 made man from the beginning and left him in the hand of his counsel 15 If thou wilt to keep the commandments and to perform acceptable faithfulness 16 He hath set sire and water before thee stretch forth thy hand unto whether thou wilt 17 * Jer. 21.8 Before man is life and death and whether him liketh shall be given him 18 For the wisdom of the Lord is great and he is mighty in power and beholdeth all things 19 And * Psal 33.18 his eyes are upon them that fear him and he knoweth every work of man 20 He hath commanded no man to do wickedly neither hath he given any man licence to sin CHAP. XVI 1 It is better to have none then many lewd ebildren 6 The wicked are not spared for their number 12 Both the wrath and the mercy of the Lord are great 17 The wicked cannot be bid 20 Gods works are unsearchable DEsire not a multitude of unprofitable children neither delight in ungodly sons 2 Though they multiply rejoyce not in them except the fear of the Lord be with them 3 Trust not thou in their life neither respect their multitude for one that is just is better then a thousand and better it is to die without children then to have them that are ungodly 4 For by one that hath understanding shall the city be replenished but the ‖ Or tribe kindred of the wicked shall speedily become delolate 5 Many such things have I seen with mine eyes and mine ear hath heard greater things then these 6 * Ch. 21.9 In the congregation of the ungodly shall a fire be kindled and in a rebellious nation wrath ‖ Or hath been is set on fire 7 * Gen. 6 4. He was not pacified towards the old giants who fell away in the strength of their foolishness 8 * Gen. 19.24 Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned but abhorred them for their pride 9 He pitied not the people of perdition who were taken away in their sins 10 * Num. 14.11 16.20 21.6 Nor the six hundred thousand footmen who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts 11 And if there be one still-necked among the people it is marvel if he escape unpunished for * Chap. 5.6 mercy and wrath are with him he is mighty to forgive and to poor out displeasure 12 As his mercy is great so is his correction also he judgeth a man according to his works 13 The sinner shall not escape with his spoils and the patience of the godly shall not be trustrate 14 Make way for every work of mercy for every man shall sinde according to his works 15 The Lord hardened Pharaoh that he should not know him that his powerful works might be known to the world 16 His mercy is manifest to every creature and he hath separated his light from the darkness with an ‖ Or 〈◊〉 partition adamant 17 Say not thou I will hide my self from the Lord shall any remember me from above I shall not be remembred among so many people for what is my soul among such an infinite number of createres 18 * 1 King 8.27 2 Chr. 6.18 2 Per. 3.10 Behold the heaven and the heaven of heavens the deep and the earth and all that therein is shall be moved when he shall visit 19 The mountains also and foundations of the earth shall be shaken with trembling when the Lord looketh upon them 20 No heart can think upon these things worthily and who is able to conceive his ways 21 It is a tempest which no man can see for the most part of his works are hid 22 Who can declare the works of his justice or who can endure them for his covenant is afar off and the trial of all things is in the end 23 He that wanteth understanding will think upon vain things and a foolish man erring imagineth follies 24 Myson hearken unto me and learn knowledge and mark my words with thy heart 25 I will shew forth doctrine in weight and declare his knowledge exactly 26 The works of the Lord are done in judgement from the beginning and from the time he made them he disposed the parts thereof 27 He garnished his works for ever and in his hand are the ‖ Or beginnings chief of them unto all generations they neither labour nor are weary not cease from their works 28 None of them hindreth another and they shall never disobey his word 29 After this the Lord looked upon the earth and filled it with his blessings 30 With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof and they shall return into it again CHAP. point 16 Eat as it becometh a man those things which are set before thee and devour not lest thou be hated 17 Leave off first for manners sake and be not unsatiable lest thou offend 18 * Chap. 3â— 29 When thou sittest among many reach not thine hand out first of all 19 A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured ‖ Or and lieth not puffing and blowing and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed 20 Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating he riseth early and his wits are with him but the pain of watching and choler and pangs of the belly are with an unsatiable man 21 And if thou hast been forced to eat arise go forth vomit and thou shalt have rest 22 My son hear me and despise me not and at the last thou shalt finde as I told thee in all thy works be quick so shall there no sickness come unto thee 23 * Prov. 21.9 Whoso is liberal of his meet men shall speak well of him and the report of his good hous-keeping will be beleeved 24 But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmure and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of 25 Shew not thy * Isa 5.22 valiantness in wine * Jedith 13.2 8. for wine hath destroyed many 26 The furnace proveth the edge by dipping so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkenness 27 Wine is as good as life to a man if it be drunk moderately what life is then to a man that is without wine for it was made to make men glad 28 Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart and cheerfulness of the minde 29 But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the minde with brawling and quarrelling 30 Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend it diminisheth strength and maketh wounds 31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine and despise him not in his mirth give him no despiteful words and press not upon him with urging him to drink CHAP. XXXII 1 Of his duty that is thief or master in a feast 14 Of the fear of God 18 Of counsel 20 Of a ragged and a smooth way 23 Trust not to any but to thyself and to God IF thou be made the master of a feast lift not thy self up but be among them as one of the rest take diligent care for them and so sit down 2 And when thou hast done all thy office take thy place that thou mayest be merry with them and receive a crown for thy well ordering of the feast 3 Speak thou that art the elder for it becometh thee but with sound judgement and hinder not musick 4 * Ecc. 3.7 Ch. 20.7 Pour not out words where there is a musician and shew not forth wisdom out of time 5 A consort of musick in a banquet of wine is as a signet of carbuncle set in gold 6 As a signet of an emerald set in a work of gold so is the melody of musick with pleasant wine 7 Speak young man if there be need of thee and yet scarcely when thou art twice asked 8 Let thy speech be short comprehending much in sew words be as one that knoweth and yet holdeth his tongue 9 * Job 3â— 6 If thou be among great men make not thy self equal with them and when ancient men are in place use not many words 10 Before the thunder goeth lightning and before a shamefac'd man shall go favour 11 Rise up betimes and be not the last but get thee home without delay There take thy pastime and do what thou wilt but sin not by proud speech 13 And for these things bless him that made thee and hath replenished thee with his good things 14 Whoso feareth the Lord will receive his discipline and they that seek him early shall finde favour 15 He that seeketh the law shall be filled therewith but the hypocrite will be offended thereat 16 They that fear the Lord shall finde judgement and shall kindle justice as a light 17 A sinful man will not be reproved but findeth an excuse according to his will 18 A man of counsel will be considerate but a strange and proud man is not daunted with fear even when of himself he hath done without counsel 19 Do nothing without advice and when thou hast once done repent not 20 Go not in a way wherein thou mayest fall and stumble not among the stones 21 Be not confident in a plain way 22 And beware of thine own children 23 In every good work trust thy own soul for this is the keeping of the commandments 24 He that beleeveth in the Lord taketh heed to the commandment and he that trusteth in him ‖ Or shall not be bâ—rt shall fare never the worse CHAP. XXXIII 1 The safety of him that feareth the Lord. 2 The wise and the foolish 7 Times and seasons are of God 10 Men are in his hands as clay in the hands of the potter 18 Chiefly regard thy self 24 Of servants THere shall no evil happen unto him that feareth the Lord but in temptation even again he will deliver him 2 A wise man hateth not the law but he that is an hypocrite therein is as a ship in a storm 3 A man of understanding trusteth in the law and the law is faithful unto him ‖ Or aâ— the asking of Vrim as an oracle 4 Prepare what to say and so thou shalt be heard and binde up instruction and then make answer 5 The †Gr. bowels heart of the * Ch. 21.14 foolish is like a cart-wheel and his thoughts are like a rolling axle-tree 6 A stallion horse is as a mocking friend he neigheth under every one that sitteth upon him 7 Why doth one day excel another when as all the light of every day in the year is of the sun 8 By the knowledge of the Lord they were distinguished and he altered seasons and feasts 9 Some of them hath he made high days and hallowed them and some of them hath he ‖ Or ordained for the number of days made ordinary days 10 And all men are from the ground and * Gen. 1.27 2.7 Adam was created of earth 11 In much knowledge the Lord hath divided them and made their ways divers 12 Some of them hath he blessed and exalted and some of them hath he sanctified and set near himself but some of them hath he cursed and brought low and turned out of their ‖ Or standings places 13 * Isa 45.9 Rom. 9.20 21. II. 1 The apostles filled with the holy Ghost and speaking divers lauguages art admired by some and derided by others 14 Whom Peter disproving and shewing that the apostles spake by the power of the holy Ghost that Jesus was rison from the deal astended into heaven had poured down the same holy Ghost and was the Mesâ—â—as a man known to them to be approved of God by his miraeles wonders and signs and is toruâ—ified without his determinate counsel and Jore knowledâ—e 37 he baptizeth a great number that were converted 41 who afterwards devoutly and charitably converse together the apostles working many miracles and God daily increasing his church ANd when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire and it sat upon each of them 4 And they were all silled with the holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven 6 Now †Gr. when this voice was mads when this was noised abroad the multitude came together and were ‖ Or troubled in minde consounded because that every man heard them speak in his own language 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled saying one to another Behold are not all these which speak Galileans 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and the dwellers in Mesupotamia and in Judea and Cappadocia in Pontus and Asia 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia in Egypt and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene and strangers of Rome Jews and proselytes 11 Cretes and Arabians we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God 12 And they were all amazed and were in doubt saying one to another What meaneth this 13 Others mocking said These men are full of new wine 14 ¶ But Peterstanding up with the eleven lift up his voice and said unto them Ye men of Judea and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem be this known unto you and hearken to my words 15 For these are not drunken as ye suppose seeing it is but the third hour of the day 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel 17 * Isa 44.3 Joel 2.28 And it shall come to pass in the fast days saith God I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesie and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams 18 And on my servants and on my pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holden of it 25 For David sâ—eaketh concerning him * Psal 16.8 I foresaw the Lord always before my face for he is on my right hand that I should not be moved 26 Therefore did my heart rejoyce and my tongue was glad moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell neither wilt thou suffer thine the fruit of his loyns according to the flesh he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ * Psal 16.10 that his soul was not left in hell neither his flesh did see corruption 32 This Jesus hath God raised up whereof we all are witnesses 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted and having received of the Father the promise of the holy Ghost he hath shed forth this which ye now see and hear 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens but he saith himself * Psal 110.1 The LORD said unto my Lord Sit thou on my right hand 35 Until I makethy foes thy footstool 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified both Lord Christ 37 ¶ Now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles Men and brethren what shall we do 38 Then Peter said unto them Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the holy Ghost 39 For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call 40 And with many other words did he testifie and exhort saying Save your selves from this untoward generation 41 ¶ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized and the same day there were added unto them about
resurrection of the dead 22 For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive 23 But * 1 Thess 4.15 every man in his own order Christ the first-fruits afterward they that are Christs at his coming 24 Then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God even the Father when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power 25 For he must reign * Psal 110.1 till he hath put all enemies under his feet 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death 27 For he * Psal 8.6 hath put all things under his feet But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that God may be all in all 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour 31 I protest by ‖ Some read our your rejoycing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord I die daily 32 If ‖ Or to speak after the manner of men after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus what advantageth it me if the dead rise not * Isa 22.23 let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die 33 Be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners 34 Awake to righteousness and sin not for some have not the knowledge of God I speak this to your shame 35 But some man will say How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come 36 Thou fool that which thou sowest is not quickned exceptit die 37 And that which thou sowest thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 39 All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kinde of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 40 There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another 41 There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 43 It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44 It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 45 And so it is written The first man Adam * Gen. 1.7 was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 47 The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 48 As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 49 And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 51 Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 52 In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last * Matth. 24.31 1 Thess 4.16 trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written * Isa 25.8 Hos 13.14 Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is thy sting O ‖ Or hell grave where is thy victory 56 The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 57 But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 58 Therefore my beloved brethren be ye stedfast unmoveable always abounding in the work of the Lord forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. CHAP. XVI 1 He exhorteth them to relieve the want of the brethren at Jerusalem 10 commendeth Timothy 13 and after friendly admonitions 16 shutteth up his epistle with divers salutations NOw concerning the collection for the saints as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him that there be no gatherings when I come 3 And when I come whomsoever you shall approve by your letters them will I send to bring your †Gr. â—ife liberality unto Jerusalem 4 And if it be meet that I go also they shall go with me 5 Now I will come unto you when I shall pass through Macedonia for I do pass through Macedonia 6 And it may be that I will abide yea and winter with you that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go 7 For I will not see you now by the way but I trust to tarry a while with you if the Lord permit 8 But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost 9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are many adversaries 10 Now if Timotheus come see that he may be with you without fear for he worketh the work of the Lord as I also do 11 Let no man therefore despise him but conduct him forth in peace that he may come unto me for I look for him with the brethren 12 As touching our brother Apollos I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren but his will was not at all to come at this time but he will come when he shall have convenient time 13 Watch ye stand fast in the faith quit you like men be strong 14 Let all your things be done with charity 15 I beseech you brethren ye know the house of Stephanas that it is the first-fruits of Achaia and that they have addicted themselves to the ministery of the saints 16 That ye submit your selves unto such and to every one that helpeth with us and laboureth 17 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied 18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours therefore acknowledge ye
seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel to eat things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which thing I hate 16 Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth 17 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write These things saith the Son of God who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet are like fine brass 19 I know thy works and charity and service and faith and thy patience and thy works and the last to be more then the first 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman * â— Kin. 16. â—1 Jezabel which calleth her self a prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not 22 Behold I will cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation except they repent of their deeds 23 And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that * Ps 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works 24 But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira As many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come 26 And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations 27 * Psal 2.6 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father 28 And I will give him the morning star 29 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches CHAP. III. 2 The angel of the church of Sardis is reproved 3 exhorted to repent and threatned if he do not repent 8 The angel of the church of Philadelphia 10 is approved for his dilâ—â—enâ—e and patience 15 The angel of Laodicea is rebuzed for being neither hot nor cold 19 and admonished to be more zealous 20 Christ standeth at the door and knocketh ANd unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead 2 Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent * 1 Thes 5. â— 2 Pet. 3.10 Ch 16.15 If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy 5 He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the * Phil. 4.3 Ch. 20.12 book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels 6 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath * Is 2â— 22 the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth no man openeth 8 I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied

XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 â—â— And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. â— And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2â— 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. darkness and his name shall be covered with darkness 5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun nor known any thing this hath more rest then the other 6 ¶ Yea though he live a thousand years twice told yet hath he seen no good do not all go to one place 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth and yet the †Heb. soul appetite is not filled 8 For what hath the wise more then the fool what hath the poor that knoweth to walk before the living 9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes †Heb. then the walking of the soul then the wandring of the desire this is also vanity and vexatioâ— of spirit 10 That which hath been is named already and it is known that it is man neither may he contend with him that is mightier then he 11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity what is man the better 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life †Heb. the number of the days of the life of his vanity all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as * Ps 144.4 a shadow for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun CHAP. VII 1 Remedies against vanity are a good name 2 mortification 7 patients 11 wisdom 23 The difficulty of wisdom A * Prov. 25.30 22.1 Good name is better then precious ointment and the day of death then the day of ones birth 2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning then to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men and the living will lay it to his heart 3 ‖ Or Anger Sorrow is better then laughter for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth 5 * Prov. 13.18 15.31.32 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise then for a man to hear the song of fools 6 For as the †Heb. sound crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool this also is vanity 7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad * Deut. 16.19 and a gift destroyeth the heart 8 Better is the end of a thing then the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better then the proud in spirit 9 * Prov. 14.17 16.32 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools 10 Say not thou What is the cause that the former days were better then these for thou dost not enquire †Heb. out of wisdom wisely concerning this 11 ¶ Wisdom ‖ Or as good at an inheritance yea better too is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun 12 For wisdom is a †Heb. shadow defence and money is a defence but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it 13 Consider the work of God for * Ch. 1.15 who can make that straight which he hath made crooked 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful but in the day of adversity consider God also hath †Heb. made set the one over against the other to the end that man should finde nothing after him 15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness 16 Be not righteous overmuch neither make thyself over-wise why shouldest thou †Heb. be desolate destroy thy self 17 Be not overmuch wicked neither be thou foolish why shouldest thou die †Heb. not in thy time before thy time 18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this yea also from this withdraw not thine hand for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all 19 * Prov. 21.22 24.5 Chap. 9.16 Wisdom strengthneth the wise more then ten mighty men which are in the city 20 * 1 King 8 46. VIII 1 Kings are greatly to be respected 6 The divine providence is to be observed 12 It is better with the godly in adversity then with the wicked in prosperity 16 The work of God is unsearchable WHo is as the wise man and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing * Pr. 17.24 a mans wisdom maketh his face to shine and †Heb. the strength the boldness of his face shall be changed 2 I counsel thee to keep the kings commandment and that in regard of the oath of God 3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight stand not in an evil thing for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him 4 Where the word of a king is there is power and who may say unto him What doest thou 5 Whoso keepeth the commandment †Heb. shall know shall feel no evil thing and a wise mans heart discerneth both time and judgement 6 ¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgement therefore the misery of man is great upon him 7 For he knoweth not that which shall be for who can tell him ‖ Or how it shall be when it shall be 8 There is no man that hath power * Job 14.5 over the spirit to retain the spirit neither hath be power in the day of death and there is no ‖ Or easting off weapons discharge in
that war neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it 9 All this have I seen and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt 10 And so I saw the wicked buried who had come and gone from the place of the holy and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done this is also vanity 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily therefore the heart of the sons of men is â—â—â—ly set in them to do evil 12 ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times and his days be prolonged yet surely I know that * Ps 37.11 18 19. it shall be well with them that fear God which fear before him 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked neither shall he prolong his days which are as a shadow because he feareth not before God 14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth that there be just men unto whom it * Ps 13.14 hapneth according to the work of the wicked again there be wicked men to whom it hapneth according to the work of the righteous I said that this also is vanity 15 * Ch. 3.22 Then I commended mirth because a man hath no better thing under the sun then to eat and to drink and to be merry for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life which God giveth him under the sun 16 ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done upon the earth for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes 17 Then I behold all the work of God that a man cannot finde out the work that is done under the sun because though a man labour to seek it out yet he shall not finde it yea further though a wise man think to know it yet shall be not be able to finde it CHAP. IX 1 Like things happen to good and bad 4 There is a necessity of death unto men 7 Comfort is all their portion in this life 11 Gods providence ruleth over all 13 Wisdom is better then strength FOr all this †Heb. I gave or sit to my heart I considered in my heart even to declare all this that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them 2 * Ps 73.3 12 13. Psal 3.15 All things come alike to all there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked to the good and to the clean and to the unclean to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not as is the good so is the sinner and he that sweareth as be that feareth an oath 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun that there is one event unto all yea also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead 4 ¶ For to him that is joyned to all the living there is hope for a living dog is better then a dead lion 5 For the living know that they shall die but the dead know not any thing neither have they any more a reward for the memory of them is forgotten 6 Also their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun 7 ¶ Go thy way eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a merry heart for God now accepteth thy works 8 Let thy garments be always white and let thy head lack no ointment 9 †Heb. see or enjoy life Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity which he hath given thee under the sun all the days of thy vanity * Ch. 2.24 3.13 5.18 for that is thy portion in this life and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do do it with thy might for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest 11 ¶ I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swilt nor the battel to the strong neither yet bread to the wise nor yet riches to men of understanding nor yet favour to men of skill but time and chance hapneth to them all 12 For man also knoweth not his time as the fishes that are taken in an evil net as the birds that are caught in the snare so are the sons of men * Pr. 29.6 snared in an evil time when it falleth suddenly upon them 13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun and it seemed great unto me 14 There was a little city and few men within it and there came a great king against it besieged it built great bulwarks against it 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city yet no man remembred that same poor man 16 * Pr. 21.22 Ch. 7.19 Then said I Wisdom is better then strength nevertheless the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heard 17 The words of wâ—se men are heard in quiet more then the cry of him that ruleth among fools 18 Wisdom is better then weapons of war but one sinner destroyeth much good CHAP. X 1 Observations of wisdom and folly â—6 Of â—iot 18 â—lotifuâ—â—â—is 19 and maâ—â—y 20 Mens thoughts of kings ought to be reverent †Heb. Flies of death DEad flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour 2 A wise mans heart is at his right hand but a fools heart is at his lest 3 Yea also when he that is a fool walketh by the way †Heb. his heart his wisdom faileth him and he saith to every one that he is a fool 4 It the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee leave not thy place for yeelding pacifieth great offences 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun as an errour which proceedeth †Heb. from before from the ruler 6 Folly is set †Heb. in great heights in great dignity and the rich sit in low place 7 I have seen servants * Pr. 30.22 upon horses and princes walking as servants upon the earth 8 * Ps 7.15 Pr. 26.27 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it and whoso breaketh an hedge a serpent shall bite him 9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby 10 If the iron be blunt and he do not whet the edge then must he put to more
