a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So

IX 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the Jews for their manifold sins 9 and for their judgement 12 Disobedience is the cause of their bitter calamity 17 He exhorteth to mourn for their destruct on 22 and to trust not in themselves but in God 25 He threatneth both Jews and Gentiles †Heb. And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings
Levit. 24.17 He that smiteth a man so that he die shall be surely put to death 13 And if a man lie not in wait but God deliver him into his hand then * Deu. 19.3 I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee 14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour to slay him with guile thou shalt take him from mine altar that he may die 15 ¶ And he that smiteth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death 16 ¶ And he that stealeth a man and selleth him or if he be found in his hand he shall surely be put to death 17 ¶ And * Lev. 20.9 Prov. 20.20 Mat. 15.4 Mar. 7.10 he that ‖ Or revileth curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death 18 ¶ And it men strive together and one smite ‖ Or his neighbour another with a stone or with his fist and he die not but keepeth his bed 19 If he rise again and walk abroad upon his staff then shall he that smote him be quit onely he shall pay for †Heb. his ceasing the loss of his time and shall cause him to be throughly healed 20 ¶ And if a man smite his servant or his maid with a rod and he die under his hand he shall be surely †Heb. avenged punished 21 Notwithstanding if he continue a day or two he shall not be punished for he is his money 22 ¶ If men strive and hurt a woman with childe so that her fruit depart from her and yet no mischief follow he shall be surely punished according as the womans husband will lay upon him and he shall pay as the judges determine 23 And if any mischief follow then thou shalt give life for life 24 * Levit. 24.20 Deut. 19.21 Mat. 5.38 Eye for eye tooth for tooth hand for hand foot for foot 25 Burning for burning wound for wound stripe for stripe 26 ¶ And if a man smite the eye of his servant or the eye of his maid that it perish he shall let him go free for his eyes sake 27 And if he smite out his man-servants tooth or his maid-servants tooth he shall let him go free for his tooths sake 28 ¶ If an ox gore a man or a woman that they die then * Gen. 9.5 the ox shall be surely stoned and his flesh shall not be eaten but the owner of the ox shall be quit 29 But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past and it hath been testified to his owner and he hath not kept him in but that he hath killed a man or a woman the ox shall be stoned and his owner also shall be put to death 30 If there be laid on him a sum of money then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him 31 Whether he have gored a son or have gored a daughter according to this judgement shall it be done unto him 32 If the ox shall push a man-servant or maid-servant he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver the ox shall be stoned 33 ¶ And if a man shall open a pit or if a man shall dig a pit and not cover it and an ox or an ass fall therein 34 The owner of the pit shall make it good and give money unto the owner of them and the dead beast shall be his 35 ¶ And if one mans ox hurt anothers that he die then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money of it and the dead ox also they shall divide 36 Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past and his owner hath not kept him in he shall surely pay ox for ox and the dead shall be his own CHAP. XXII 1 Of theft 5 Of damage 7 Of trespasses 14 Of borrowing 16 Of fornication 18 Of witchcraft 19 Of bestiality 20 Of idolatry 21 Of strangers widows and fatherless 25 Of usury 26 Of pledges 28 Of reverence to magistrates 29 Of the first-fruits IF a man shall steal an ox or a ‖ Or goat sheep and kill it or sell it he shall restore five oxen for an ox and * 2 Sam 12.6 four sheep for a sheep 2 ¶ If a thief he found breaking up and be smitten that he die there shall no bloud be shed for him 3 If the sun be risen upon him there shall be bloud shed for him for he should make full restitution if he have nothing then he shall be sold for his theft 4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive whether it be ox or ass or sheep he shall restore double 5 ¶ If a man shall cause a field or vine-yard to be eaten and shall put in his beast and shall feed in another mans field of the best of his own field of that best of his own vineyard shall he make restitution 6 ¶ If fire break out and catch in thorns so that the stacks of corn or the standing-corn or the field be consumed therewith he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitâ—tion 7 ¶ If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep and it be stoln out of the mans house if the thief be found let him pay double 8 If the thief be not found then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbours goods 9 For all manner of trespass whether it be for ox for ass for sheep for raiment or for any manner of lost thing which another challengeth to be his the cause of both parties shall come before the judges and whom the judges shall condemn he shall pay double unto his neighbour 10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep it die or be hurt or driven away no man seeing it 11 Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbours goods and the owner of it shall accept thereof and he shall not make it good 12 And * Gen. 31.39 if it be stoln from him he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof 13 If it be torn in pieces then let him bring it for witness and he shall not make good that which was torn 14 ¶ And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour and it he hurt or die the owner thereof being not with it he shall surely make it good 15 But if the owner thereof be with it he shall not make it good if it be an hired thing â—t came for his hire 16 ¶ And * Deut. 22.28 if a man intice a maid that is not betrothed and lie with her he shall surely endow her â—o be his wife 17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him he shall †Heb. weigh pay money according to

XXI 1 Of the priests mourning 6 Of their hâ—liness 8 Of their estimation 7 13 Of their marriages 16 The priests that have blemishes must not miniâ—ter in the sanctuary ANd the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron and say unto them There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people 2 But for his kin that is near unto him that is for his mother and for his father and for his son and for his daughter and for his brother 3 And for his sister a virgin that is nigh unto him which hath had no husband for her may he be defiled 4 But ‖ Or being an husband among his people be shall not defile himself for his wife c. he shall not defile himself being a chief man among his people to profane himself 5 * Chap. 19.27 They shall not make baldness upon their head neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh 6 They shall be holy unto their God and not profane the name of their God for the offerings of the LORD made by fire and the bread of their God they do offer therefore they shall be holy 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore or profane neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband for he is holy unto his God 8 Thou shalt sanctifie him therefore for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee for I the LORD which sanctifie you am holy 9 ¶ And the daughter of any priest if she profane her self by playing the whore she profaneth her father she shall be burnt with fire 10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren upon whose head the anointing oyl was poured and that is consecrated to put on the garments shall not uncover his head nor rend his clothes 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body nor defile himself for his father or for his mother 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God for the crown of the anointing oyl of his God is upon him I am the LORD 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginâ—ty 14 A widow or a divorced woman or profane or an harlot these shall he not take but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people for I the LORD do sanctifie him 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 17 Speak unto Aaron saying Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish let him not approach to offer the ‖ Or food bread of his God 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish he shall not approach a blinde man or a lame or he that hath a flat nose or any thing * Chap. 22.23 superfluous 19 Or a man that is broken-footed or broken-handed 20 Or crook-backt or ‖ Or too slender a dwarf or that hath a blemish in his eye or be scurvy or scabbed or hath his stones broken 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire he hath a blemish he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God 22 He shall eat the bread of his God both of the most holy and of the holy 23 Onely he shall not go in unto the vail nor come nigh unto the altar because he hath a blemish that he profane not my sanctuarieâ— for I the LORD do sanctifie them 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron and to his sons and unto all the children of Israel CHAP. XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a †Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water
before the LORD empty 17 Every man shall give †Heb. according to the gift of his hand as he is able according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee 18 ¶ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee throughout thy tribes and they shall judge the people with just judgement 19 Thou shalt not wrest judgement thou shalt not respect persons * Exod. 23.8 neither take a gift for a gift doth blinde the eyes of the wise and pervert the ‖ Or matters words of the righteous 20 †Heb. justice justice That which is altogether just shalt thou follow that thou mayest live and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee 21 ¶ Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God which thou shalt make thee 22 * Lev. 26.1 Neither shalt thou set thee up any ‖ Or statue or pillar image which the LORD thy God hateth CHAP. XVII 1 The things sacrificed must be sound 2 Idolaters must be slain 8 Hard controversies are to be determined by the priests and judges 12 The contemner of that determination must die 14 The election 16 and duty of a king THou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock or ‖ Or goat sheep wherein is blemish or any evil-savouredness for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God 2 ¶ If there be found among you within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee man or woman that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God in transgressing his covenant 3 And hath gone and served other gods and worshipped them either the sun or mooâ— or any of the host of heaven which I have not commanded 4 And it be told thee and thou hast heard of it and enquired diligently and behold it be true and the thing certain that such abomination is wrought in Israel 5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman which have committed that wicked thing unto thy gates even that man or that woman and shalt stone them with stones till they die 6 * Numb â—5 3â— Ch. 19.15 Mat. 18.16 Joh. 8.17 2 Cor. 13.1 Heb. 10.28 At the mouth of two witnesses or three witnesses shall he that is worthy of death be put to death but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death 7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death and afterward the hands of all the people so thou shalt put the evil away from among you 8 ¶ If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgement between bloud and bloud between plea and plea and between stroke and stroke being matters of controversie within thy gates then shalt thou arise and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose 9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites and unto the judge that shall be in those days and enquire and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgement 10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence which they of that place which the LORD shall choose shall shew thee and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee 11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee and according to the judgement which they shall tell thee thou shalt do thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee to the right hand nor to the left 12 And the man that will do presumptuously †Heb. not to hearken and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God or unto the judge even that man shall die and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel 13 And all the people shall hear and fear and do no more presumptuously 14 ¶ When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee and shalt possess it and shalt dwell therein and shalt say I well set a king over me like as all the nations that are about me 15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee whom the LORD thy God shall choose one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee thou mayest not set a stranger over thee which is not thy brother 16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself nor cause the people to return to Egypt to the end that he should multiply horses forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you Ye shall henceforth return no more that way 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself that his heart turn not away neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold 18 And it shall be when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites 19 And it shall be with him and he shall read therein all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the LORD his God to keep all the words of this law and these statutes to do them 20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren and that he turn not aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom he and his children in the midst of Israel CHAP. XVIII 1 The Lord is the priests and Levites inheritance 3 The priests due 6 The Levites portion 9 The abominations of the nations are to be avoided 15 Christ the Prophet is to be heard 20 The presumptuous prophet is to die THe priests the Levites and all the tribe of Levi * Numb 18.20 Chap. 10.9 shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel they * 1 Cor. 9.13 shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire and his inheritance 2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren the LORD is their inheritance as he hath said unto them 3 ¶ And this shall be the priests due from the people from them that offer a sacrifice whether it be ox or sheep and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder and the two cheeâ—s and the maw 4 The first-fruit also of thy corn of thy wine and of thy oyl and the first of the fleece of thy sheep shalt thou give him 5 For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes to stand to minister in the name of the LORD him and his sons for ever 6 ¶ And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel where he sojourned and come with all the desire of his minde unto the place which the LORD shall choose 7 Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God as all his brethren the Levites do which stand there before the LORD 8 They shall
with them for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur that is over against Egypt 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and ‖ Or of the second sort of the fatlings and the lambs and all that was good and would not utterly destroy them but every thing that was vile and refuse that they destroyed utterly 10 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel saying 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king for he is turned back from following me and hath not performed my commandments And it grieved Samuel and he cried unto the LORD all night 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning it was told Samuel saying Saul came to Carmel and behold he set him up a place and is gone about and passed on and gone down to Gilgal 13 And Samuel came to Saul and Saul said unto him Blessed be thou of the LORD I have performed the commandment of the LORD 14 And Samuel said What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear 15 And Saul said They have brought them from the Amalekites for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God and the rest we have utterly destroyed 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul Stay and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night And he said unto him say on 17 And Samuel said When thou wast little in thine own sight wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey and said Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites and fight against them until †Heb. they consume them they be consumed 19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD but didst flie upon the spoil and didst evil in the sight of the LORD 20 And Saul said unto Samuel Yea I have obeyed the voice of the LORD and have gone the way which the LORD sent me and have brought Agag the king of Amalek and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites 21 But the people took of the spoil sheep and oxen the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal 22 And Samuel said Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD Behold * Eccles 5.1 Hos 6.6 Mat. 9.13 12.7 to obey is better then sacrifice and to hearken then the fat of rams 23 For rebellion is as the sin of †Heb. divination witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD he hath also rejected thee from being king 24 ¶ And Saul said unto Samuel I have sinned for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and thy words because I feared the people and obeyed their voice 25 Now therefore I pray thee pardon my sin and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD 26 And Samuel said unto Saul I will not return with thee for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle and it rent 28 And Samuel said unto him The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day and hath given it to a neighbour of thine that is better then thou 29 And also the ‖ Or eternity o◠victory strength of Israel will not lie nor repent for he is not a man that he should repent 30 Then he said I have sinned yet honour me now I pray thee before the elders of my people and before Israel and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD thy God 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul and Saul worshipped the LORD 32 ¶ Then said Samuel Bring you hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites and Agag came unto him delicately And Agag said Surely the bitterness of death is past 33 And Samuel said * Exod. 17.11 Numb 14 45. As thy sword hath made women childless so shall thy mother be childless among women And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal 34 ¶ Then Samuel went to Ramah and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel CHAP. XVI 1 Samuel sent by God under pretense of a sacrifice cometh to Beth-lehem 6 His humane judgement is reproved 11 He anointeth David 19 Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit ANd the LORD said unto Samuel How long wilt thou mourn for Saul seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel fill thine horn with oyl and go I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite for I have provided me a king among his sons 2 And Samuel said How can I go if Saul hear it he will kill me And the LORD said Take an heifer †Heb. in thine hand with thee and say I am come to sacrifice to the LORD 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice and I will shew thee what thou shalt do and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake and came to Beth-lehem and the elders of the town trembled at his †Heb. meeting coming and said Comest thou peaceably 5 And he said Peaceably I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD sanctifie your selves and come with me to the sacrifice And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice 6 ¶ And it came to pass when they were come that he looked on Eliab and said Surely the LORDs anointed is before him 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him for the LORD seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the †Heb. eyes outward appearance but the LORD looketh on the * 1 Chr. 23.9 Psal 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 20.12 heart 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 10 Again Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel and Samuel said unto Jesse
10 He encourageth Solomon to build the temple 11 He giveth him patterns for the form and gold and silver for the materials ANd David assembled all the princes of Israel the princes of the tribes and the captains of the companies that ministred to the king by course and the captains over the thousands and captains over the hundreds and the stewards over all the substance and ‖ Or cattel possession of the king and of his sons with the ‖ Or eunuâ—hâ— officers and with the mighty men and with all the valiant men unto Jerusalem 2 Then David the king stood up upon his feet and said Hear me my brethren and my people As for me I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD and for the footstool of our God and had made ready for the building 3 But God said unto me * 2 Sam. 7.5 13. 1 Kin. 5.5 Chap. 22.8 Thou shalt not build an house for my name because thou hast been a man of war and hast shed †Heb. blouds bloud 4 Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever for he hath chosen * Gen. 49.8 1 Sam. 16.13 Ps 78.68 Judah to be the ruler and of the house of Judah the house of my father and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel 5 * Ch. 23.5 And of all my sons for the LORD hath given me many sons he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel 6 And he said unto me * 2 Sam. 7.13 2 Chr. 1.9 Solomon thy son he shall build my house and my courts for I have chosen him to be my son and I will be his father 7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever if he be †Heb. strong constant to do my commandments and my judgements as at this day 8 Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD and in the audience of our God keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God that ye may possess this good land and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever 9 ¶ And thou Solomon my son know thou the God of thy father and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing minde for * 1 Sam. 16.7 Ps 7.9 139.2 Jer. 11.20 17.10 20.12 the LORD searcheth all hearts and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts if thou seek him he will be found of thee but if thou forsake him he will cast thee off for ever 10 Take heed now for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary be strong and do it 11 ¶ Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch and of the houses thereof and of the treasuries thereof and of the upper chambers thereof and of the inner parlours thereof and of the place of the mercy-seat 12 And the pattern †Heb. of all that was with him of all that he had by the spirit of the courts of the house of the LORD and of all the chambers round about of the treasuries of the house of God and of the treasuries of the dedicate things 13 Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD 14 He gave of gold by weight for things of gold for all instruments of all manner of service silver also for all instruments of silver by weight for all instruments of every kind of service 15 Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold and for their lamps of gold by weight for every candlestick and for the lamps thereof and for the candlesticks of silver by weight both for the candlestick and also for the lamps thereof according to the use of every candlestick 16 And by weight he gave gold for the tables of shew-bread for every table and likewise silver for the tables of silver 17 Also pure gold for the flesh-hooks and the bowls and the cups and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver 18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the * 1 Sam. 6.4 cherubims that spread out their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD 19 All this said David the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me even all the works of this pattern 20 And David said to Solomon his son Be strong and of good courage and do it fear not nor be dismayed for the LORD God even my God will be with thee he will not fail thee nor forsake thee until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD 21 And behold the courses of the priests and the Levites even theâ— shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man for any manner of service also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy commandment CHAP. XXIX 1 David by his example and intreaty 6 causeth the princes and people to offer willingly 10 Davids thanksgiving and prayer 20 The people having blessed God and sacrificed make Solomon king 26 Davids reign and death FUrthermore David the king said unto all the congregation Solomon my son whom alone God hath chosen is yet * Chap. 22. â— young and tender and the work is great for the palace is not for man but for the LORD God 2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold and the silver for things of silver and the brass for things of brass the iron for things of iron and wood for things of wood onyx-stones and stones to be set glistring stones and of divers colours and all manner of precious stones and marble-stones in abundance 3 Moreover because I have set my affection to the house of my God I have of mine own proper good of gold and silver which I have given to the house of my God over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house 4 Even three thousand talents of gold of the gold of * 1 King 9.28 Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver to overlay the walls of the houses withal 5 The gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers And who then is willing †Heb. to fâ—ll his â—â—nd to consecrate his service this day unto
a great feast unto all his princes and his servants even Esthers feast and he made a †Heb. rest release to the provinces and gave gifts according to the state of the king 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time then Mordecai sat in the kings gate 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people as Mordecai had charged her for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai like as when she was brought up with him 21 ¶ In those days while Mordecai sat in the kings gate two of the kings chamberlains ‖ Or Bigthana ch 6.2 Bigthan and Teresh of those which kept †Heb. the threshold the door were wroth and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai who told it unto Esther the queen and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter it was found out therefore they were both hanged on a tree and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king CHAP. III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live
not stumble 13 Take fast hold of instruction let her not go keep her for she is thy life 14 ¶ * Psal 1.1 Chap. 1.10 15. Enter not into the path of the wicked and go not in the way of evil men 15 Avoid it pass not by it turn from it and pass away 16 For they sleep not except they have done mischief and their sleep is taken away unless they cause some to fall 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence 18 But the path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day 19 The way of the wicked is as darkness they know not at what they stumble 20 ¶ My son attend to my words incline thine ear unto my sayings 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes keep them in the midst of thine heart 22 For they are life unto those that finde them and †Heb. â—â—u licine health to all their flesh 23 ¶ Keep thy heart †Heb. above all keeping with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life 24 Put away from thee †Heb. forwardness of mouth and pereversness of lips a froward mouth and perverse lips put far from thee 25 Let thine eyes look right on and let thine eye-lids look straight before thee 26 Ponder the path of thy feet and ‖ Or all thâ— ways shall be ordered aright let all thy ways be established 27 * Deut. 5.32 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left remove thy foot from evil CHAP. XIX 1Vnder the type of breaking a potters vessel is foreshewed the desolation of the Jews for their sins THus saith the LORD Go and get a potters earthen bottle and take of the ancients of the people and of the ancients of the priests 2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom which is by the entry of †Heb. the sun-gate the east-gate and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee 3. And say Hear ye the word of the LORD O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring evil upon this place the which whosoever heareth his ears shall * 1 Sam. 3.11 tingle 4 Because they have forsaken me and have estranged this place and have burnt incense in it unto other gods whom neither they nor their fathers have known nor the kings of Judah and have filled this place with the bloud of innocents 5 They have built also the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal * Ch. 7.31 32. which I commanded not nor spake it neither came it into my minde 6 Therefore behold the days come saith the LORD that this place shall no more be called Tophet nor the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of slaughter 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of them that seek their lives and their * Ch. 7.33 and 16.4 carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth 8 And I will make this city * Ch. 18.16 and 49.13 and 50.13 desolate and an hissing every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof 9 And I will cause them to eat the * Lev. 26.29 Deu. 28.53 Lam. 4.10 flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness wherewith their enemies and they that seek their lives shall straiten them 10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee 11 And shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Even so will I break this people and this city as one breaketh a potters vessel that cannot †Heb. be healed be made whose again and they shall * Ch. 7.32 bury them in Tophet till there be no place to bury 12 Thus will I do unto this place saith the LORD and to the inhabitants thereof and even make this city as Tophet 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled as the place of Tophet because of all the houses upon whose * Ch. 32.29 roofs they have burnt incense unto all the host of heaven and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods 14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet whither the LORD had sent him to prophesie and he stood in the court of the LORDS house and said to all the people 15 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it because they have hardned their necks that they might not hear my words CHAP. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or
father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouringâ— of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the â—and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. one accord and said unto her Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem thou art the great glory of Israel thou art the great rejoycing of our nation 10 Thou hast done all these thingâ— by thine hand thou hast done much good to Israel and God is pleased therewith blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore and all the people said So be it 11 And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent and all his plate and beds and vessels and all his stuff and she took it and laid it on her mule and made ready her carts and laid them thereon 12 Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her and blessed her and made a dance among them for her and she took branches in her hand and gave also to the women that were with her 13 And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her and she went before all the people in the dance leading all the women and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands and with longs in their mouths CHAP. XVI 6 The song of Judith 19 She dedicateth the stuff of Holofernes 23 She died at Bethullas a widow of great honour 24 All Israel did lament her death THen Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel and all the people sang after her ‖ Or. this prâ—ising this song of praise 2 And Judith said Begin unto my God with timbrels sing unto my Lord with cymbals tune unto him a ‖ Or. Psalm and praise new psalm exalt him and call upon his name 3 For God breaketh the battels for amongst the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me 4 Assur came out of the mountains from the north he came with ten thousands of his army the * Chap. 2.19 multitude whereof stopped the torrents and their hors-men have covered the hills 5 He bragged that he would burn up my borders and kill my young men with the sword and dash the sucking children against the ground and make mine infants as a prey and my virgins as a spoil 6 But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman 7 For the mighty one did not fall by the young men neither did the sons of the Titans smite him nor high giants set upon him but Judith the daughter of Merari weakned him with the beauty of her countenance 8 For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel and anointed her face with ointment and bound her hair in a †Gr. mitrâ— tire and took a linen garment to deceive him 9 Her sandals ravished his eyes her beauty took his minde prisoner and the fauchion passed through his neck 10 The Perlians quaked at her boldness and the Medes were ‖ Or confounded daunted at her hardiness 11 Then my afflicted shouted for joy and my weak ones cried aloud but ‖ the Assyrians they were astonished these lifted up their voices but they were overthrown 12 The sons of the damsels have pierced them through and wounded them as fugitives children they perished by the battel of the Lord. 13 I will sing unto the Lord ‖ Or a song of praise a new song O Lord thou art great and glorious wonderful in strength and invincible 14 Let all creatures serve thee for thou spakest and they were made thou didst send forth thy spirit and it created them and there is none that can resist thy voice 15 For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee 16 For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt-offering but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times 17 Wo to the nations that rise up against my kindred the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement in putting fire and worms in their flesh and they shall feel them and weep for ever 18 Now assoon as they entred into Jerusalem they worshipped the Lord and assoon as the people were purified they offered their burnt-offerings and their free-offerings and their gifts 19 Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes which the people had given her and gave the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber for a gift unto the Lord. 20 So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three moneths and Judith remained with them 21 After this time every one returned to his own inheritance and Judith went to Bethulia and remained in her own possession and was in her time honourable in all the countrey 22 And many desired her but none knew her all the days of her life after that Manasses her husband was dead and was gathered to his people 23 But she increased more and more in honour and waxed old in her husbands house being an hundred and five years old and made her maid free so she died in Bethulia and they buried her in the ‖ Or sepulebre cave of her husband Manasses 24 And the house of Israel lamented her * Gen. 50.10 seven days and before she died she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband and to them that were the nearest of her kindred 25 And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith nor a long time after her death ¶ The rest of the chapters of the book of ESTHER which are found neither in the Hebrew nor in the Caldee Part of the tenth Chapter after the Greek 5 Mardotheus remembreth and expoundeth his dream of the river and the two draâ—ons THen Mardocheus said God hath done these things 5 For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters and nothing thereof hath failed 6 A little fountain became a river and there was light and the sun and much water this river is Esther whom the king married and made queen 7 And the two dragons are I and Aman. 8 And the nations were those that were assembled to destroy the name of the Jews 9 And my nation is this Israel which cried to God and were saved for the Lord hath saved his people and the Lord hath delivered us from all those evils and God hath wrought signs and great wonders which have not been done among the Gentiles 10 Therefore hath he made two lots one for the people of God and another for all the Gentileâ— 11 And these two lots came at the hour and time and day of Judgement before God amongst all nations 12 So God remembred his people and justified his inheritance 13 Therefore those days shall be unto them in

XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto

V. 1 Christ delivering the possessed of the legion of devils 13 they enter into the swine 25 He healeth the woman of the bloudy issue 35 and raiseth from death Jairus his daughter ANd * Matth. 8.28 they came over unto the other side of the sea into the countrey of the Gadarenes 2 And when he was come out of the ship immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs and no man could binde him no not with chains 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains and the chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither could any man tame him 5 And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cuttâ—ng himself with stones 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off he ran and worshipped him 7 And cried with a loud voice and said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not 8 For he said unto him Come out of the man thou unclean spirit 9 And he asked him What is thy name And he answered saying My name is Legion for we are many 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the countrey 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding 12 And all the devils besought him saying Send us into the swine that we may enter into them 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave And the unclean spirits went out and entred into the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea 14 And they that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the countrey And they went out to see what it was that was done 15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 16 And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts 18 And when he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not but saith unto him Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion on thee 20 And he departed and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea 22 * Matth. 9.18 And behold there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet 23 And besought him greatly saying My little daughter lieth at the
to place attended with his apostles propoundeth the parable of the sower 1â— and of the caudle 21 declareth who are his mother and brethren 12 rebuketh the winds 26 casteth the leâ—â—â—â— of devils out of the man into the 〈◊〉 of swene 37 is rejected of the Gadarens 43 healâ—th the woman of her blouâ—â—y issue 4â— and raiseth from death Jairus daughter ANd I came to pass afterward that he went throughout every city and village preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God and the twelve were with him 2 And certain women which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities Mary called Magdalene * Mar. 16.9 out of whom went seven devils 3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herods steward and Susanna and many others which ministred unto him of their substance 4 ¶ * Mat. 13.2 And when much people were gathered together and were come to him out of every city he spake by a parable 5 A sower went out to sowe his seed and as he sowed some fell by the way-side and it was troden down and the fowls of the air devoured it 6 And some tell upon a rock and assoon as it was sprung up it withered away because it lacked motiture 7 And some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it 8 And other fell on good ground and sprang up and bare fruit an hundred fold And when he had said these things he cried He that hath ears to hear let him hear 9 And his disciples asked him saying What might this parable be 10 And he said Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God but to others in parables that seeing they might not see and hearing they might not understand 11 * Matth. 3â— 18 Now the parable is this The seed is the word of God 12 These by the way-side are they that hear then cometh the devil and taketh away the word out of their hearts left they should beleeve and be saved 13 They on the rock are they which when they hear receive the word with joy and these have no root which for a while beleeve and in time of temptation fall away 14 And that which fell among thorns are they which when they have heard go forth and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this use and bring no fruit to perfection 15 But that on the good ground are they which in an honest and good heart having heard the word keep it and bring forth fruit with patience 16 ¶ * Mat. 8.15 No man when he hath lighted a candle covereth it with a vessel or putteth it under a bed but setteth it on a candlestick that they which enter in may see the light 17 * Mat. 10.26 For nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest neither any thing hid that shall not be known and come abroad 18 Take heed therefore how ye hear * Mat. 13.12 for whosoever hath to him shall be given and whosoever hath not from him shall be taken even that which he ‖ Or thinketh that be bate seemeth to have 19 ¶ * Mat. 12. â—6 Then came to him his mother and his brethren and could not come at him for the preass 20 And it was told him by certain which said Thy mother and thy brethren stand without desiring to see thee 21 And he answered and said unto them My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God and do it 22 ¶ * Mat. 8.23 Now it came to pass on a certain day that he went into a ship with his disciples and he said unto them Let us go over unto the other side of the lake And they laâ—ched forth 23 But as they sailed he fell asleep and there came down a storm of wind on the lake they were filled with water were in jeopardy 24 And they came to him and awoke him saying Master master we perish Then he arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water and they ceased and there was a calm 25 And he said unto them Where is your faith And they being afraid wondred saying one to another What manner of man is this for he commandeth even the winds and water and they obey him 26 ¶ * Ma 28. And they arrived at the countrey of the Gadarens which is over against Galilee 27 And when he went forth to land there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time and ware no clothes neither abode in any house but in the tombs 28 When he saw Jesus he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God most high I beseech thee torment me not 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man For oftentimes it had caught him and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters and he brake the bands and was driven of the devil into the wilderness 30 And Jesus asked him saying What is thy name And he said Legion because many devils were entred into him 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep 32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them And he suffered them 33 Then went the devils out of the man entred into the swine the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake were choked 34 When they that fed them saw what was done they fled and went and told it in the city and in the countrey 35 Then they went out to see what was done and came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed 37 ¶ Then the whole multitude of the countrey of the Gadarens round about besought him to depart from them for they were taken with great fear and he went up into the ship and returned back again 38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him but Jesus sent him away saying 39 Return to thine own house and shew how great things God hath done unto thee And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him 40 And it came to pass that when Jesus was returned the people gladly received him for they were all waiting for him 41 ¶ * Mat. 9.18 And behold there came a man named Jairus and he was a ruler of the synagogue and he fell down at Jesus feet and besought him that he would come into his house 42 For he had one onely daughter about twelve years

XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fieâ— with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. â—1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. â—3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Isâ— 2.19 â—â—os 1â— 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a â—â—ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chriâ—t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of
