now commit †Heb. her whoredoms whoredoms with her and she with them 44 Yet they went in unto her as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah the lewd women 45 ¶ And the righteous men they shall * Ch. 16.38 judge them after the manner of adulteresses and after the manner of women that shed bloud because they are adulteresses and bloud is in their hands 46 For thus saith the Lord GOD I will bring up a company upon them and will give them †Heb. for a removing and spoil to be removed and spoiled 47 And the company shall stone them with stones and ‖ Or â—inele them out dispatch them with their swords they shall slay their sons and their daughters and burn up their houses with fire 48 Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness 49 And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you and ye shall bear the sins of your idols and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXIV 1Vnder the parable of a boâ—ling pot â—is shewed the irrevocable destruction of Jerusalem 15 By the signe of Ezekiel not mourning for the death of his wife 19 〈◊〉 shewed the calamity of the Jews to be beyond all sorrow AGain in the ninth year in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man write thee the name of the day even of this same day the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day 3 And utter a parable unto the rebellious house and say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD Set on a pot set it on and also pour water into it 4 Gather the pieces thereof into it even every good piece the thigh and the shoulder fill it with the choice bones 5 Take the choice of the flock and ‖ Or beaâ— burn also the bones under it and make it boyl well and let them seethe the bones of it therein 6 ¶ Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD Wo to the bloudy city to the pot whose seum is therein and whose scum is not gone out of it bring it out piece by piece let no lot fall upon it 7 For her bloud is in the midst of her she set it upon the top of a rock she poured it not upon the ground to cover it with dust 8 That it might cause sury to come up to take vengeance I have set her bloud upon the top of a rock that it should not be covered 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD * Nah. 3.1 Hab. 2.12 Wo to the bloudy city I will even make the pile for fire great 10 Heap on wood kindle the fire consume the flesh and spice it well and let the bones be burnt 11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof that the brass of it may be hot and may burn and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it that the scum of it may be consumed 12 She hath wearied her self with lies and her great scum went not forth out of her her scum shall be in the fire 13 In thy filthiness is lewdness because I have purged thee and thou wast not purged thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee 14 I the LORD have spoken it it shall come to pass and I will do it I will not go back neither will I spare neither will I repent according to thy ways and according to thy doings shall they judge thee saith the Lord GOD. 15 ¶ Also the word of the LORD came unto me saying 16 Son of man behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep neither shall thy tears †Heb. 〈◊〉 run down 17 †Heb. le sileve Forbear to cry make no mourning for the dead binde the tire of thine head upon thee and put on thy shoes upon thy feet and cover not thy †Heb. upper lip and â—over 22. lips and eat not the bread of men 18 So I spake unto the people in the morning and at even my wife died and I did in the morning as I was commanded 19 ¶ And the people said unto me Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us that thou doest so 20 Then I answered them The word of the LORD came unto me saying 21 Speak unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will profane my sanctuary the excellency of your strength the desire of your eyes and †Heb. the pitâ— of your soul that which your soul pitieth and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword 22 And ye shall do as I have done ye shall not cover your lips nor eat the bread of men 23 And your tires shall be upon your heads and your shoes upon your feet ye shall not mourn nor weep but ye shall pine away for your iniquities and mourn one towards another 24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a signe according to all that he hath done shall ye do and when this cometh ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 25 Also thou son of man shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength the joy of their glory the desire of their eyes and †Heb. the listing up of their sâ—ul that whereupon they set their minds their sons and their daughters 26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee to cause thee to hear it with thine ears 27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped and thou shalt speak and be no more dumb and thou shalt be a signe unto them and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXV 1 Gods venâ—eance for their insolency against the Jews upon the Ammonites 8 upon Moah and Seir 12 upon Edom 15 and upon the Philistines THe word of the LORD came again unto me saying 2 Son of man set thy face * Jer. 49.1 c. against the Ammonites and prophesie against them 3 And say unto the Ammonites Hear the word of the Lord GOD Thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou saidst Aha against my sanctuary when it was profaned and against the land of Israel when it was desolate and against the house of Judah when they went into captivity 4 Behold therefore I will deliver thee to the †Heb. children men of the east for a possession and they shall set their palaces in thee and make their dwellings in thee they shall eat thy fruit and they shall drink thy milk 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and the Ammonites a couching-place for flocks and ye shall know that I am the LORD 6 For thus saith the Lord
is pleasant unto thy soul 11 Discretion shall preserve thee understanding shall keep thee 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man from the man that speaketh froward things 13 Who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness 14 Who rejoyce to do evil and delight in the frowardness of the wicked 15 Whose ways are crooked and they froward in their paths 16 To deliver thee from the strange woman * Chap. â— 3 and 7.5 even from the stranger which flattereth with her words 17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth and forgetteth the covenant of her God 18 For her house inclineth unto death and her paths unto the dead 19 None that go unto her return again neither take they hold of the paths of life 20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men and keep the paths of the righteous 21 * Ps 37. â—9 For the upright shall dwell in the land and the perfect shall remain in it 22 * Job 18.17 Psal 104.35 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth and the transgressours shall be ‖ Or pluckt up rooted out of it CHAP. IV. 1 Solomon to perswade obedience 3 sheweth what instruction he had of his parents 5 To study wisdom 14 and to shun the path of the wicked 20 He exhorteth to faith 23 and sanctification HEar ye children the instruction of a father and attend to know understanding 2 For I give you good doctrine forsake you not my law 3 For I was my fathers son * 1 Chr. 29.1 tender and onely beloved in the sight of my mother 4 * 1 Chr. 28.9 He taught me also and said unto me Let thine heart retain my words keep my commandments and live 5 Get wisdom get understanding forget it not neither decline from the words of my mouth 6 Forsake her not and she shall preserve thee love her and she shall keep thee 7 Wisdom is the principal thing therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding 8 Exalt her and she shall promote thee she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her 9 She shall give to thine head * Chap. 1.9 an ornament of grace ‖ Or she shall compass thee with a crown of glory a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee 10 Hear O my son and receive my sayings and the years of thy life shall be many 11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom I have led thee in right paths 12 When thou goest thy steps shall not be straitned * Psal 91.11 12. and when thou runnest thou shalt

IX 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the Jews for their manifold sins 9 and for their judgement 12 Disobedience is the cause of their bitter calamity 17 He exhorteth to mourn for their destruct on 22 and to trust not in themselves but in God 25 He threatneth both Jews and Gentiles †Heb. Who will give my head c. Take ye heed every one of his ‖ Or friend neighbour and trust ye not in any brother for every brother will utterly supplant and every neighbour will walk with slanders 5 And they will ‖ Or mock deceive every one his neighbour and will not speak the truth they have taught their tongue to speak lies and weary themselves to commit iniquity 6 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit through deceit they refuse to know me saith the LORD 7 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold I will melt them and try them for how shall I do for the daughter of my people 8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out it speaketh * Psal 12.2 120.3 deceit one speaketh * Psal 28.3 peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth but †Heb. in the midst of him in heart he layeth ‖ Or wait for him his wait 9 ¶ * Chap. 5.9 29. Shall I not visit them for these things saith the LORD shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this 10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing and for the ‖ Or pastures habitations of the wilderness a lamentation because they are ‖ Or desolate burnt up so that none can pass through them neither can men hear the voice of the cattel †Heb. from the fowl even to c. both the fowl of the heavens and the breast are fled they are gone 11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps and * Chap. 10.22 a den of dragons and I will make the cities of Judah †Heb. desolation desolate without an inhabitant 12 ¶ Who is the wise man that may understand this and who is be to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken that he may declare it for what the land perisheth and is burnt up like a wilderness that none passeth through 13 And the LORD saith Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them and have not obeyed my voice neither walked therein 14 But have walked after the ‖ Or stubbornness imagination of their own heart and after Baalim which their fathers taught them 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will feed them even this people * Chap. 8.14 23.15 with wormwood and give them water of gall to drink 16 I will * Levit. 26.33 scatter them also among the heathen whom neither they nor their fathers have known and I will send a sword after them till I have consumed them 17 ¶ Thus saith the LORD of hosts Consider ye and call for the mourning-women that they may come and send for cunning women that they may come 18 And let them make haste and take up a wailing for us that our eyes may run down with tears and our eye-lids gush out with waters 19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion How are we spoiled we are greatly confounded because we have forsaken the land because our dwellings have cast us out 20 Yet hear the word of the LORD O ye women and let your ear receive the word of his mouth and teach your daughters wailing and every one her neighbour lamentation 21 For death is come up into our
utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came unto me at the first for he hath caused me to fall ‖ Or into the multitude in a trance into many trances and mine end is turned into corruption and my prayer to rebuke 29 And as I was speaking these words behold he came unto me and looked upon me 30 And so I say as one that had been dead and mine understanding was taken from me and he took me by the right hand and comforted me and set me upon my feet and said unto me 31 What aileth thee and why art thou so disquieted and why is thine understanding troubled and the thoughts of thine heart 32 And I said Because thou hast forsaken me and yet I did according to thy * Chap 5.20 words and I went into the field and so I have seen and yet see that I am not able to express 33 And he said unto me Stand up manfully and I will advise thee 34 Then said I Speak on my lord in me onely forsake me not lest I die frustrate of my hope 35 For I have seen that I knew not and hear that I do not know 36 Or is my sense deceived or my soul in a dream 37 Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this ‖ Or trance vision 38 He answered me then and said Hear me and I shall inform thee and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee 39 He hath seen that thy ‖ Or purpose way is right for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people and makest great lamentation for Sion 40 This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest 41 Thou sawest a woman mourning and thou beganst to comfort her 42 But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more but there appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as thine eyes be able to see 56 And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend 57 For thou art blessed above many other and ‖ Or at called to be with c. art called with the Highest and so are but few 58 But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here 59 And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the ‖ Or

XXIII 1 The age and death of Sarah 3 The purchase of Machpelah 19 where Sarah was buried ANd Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old these were the years of the life of Sarah 2 And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah to weep for her 3 ¶ And Abraham stood up from before his dead and spake unto the sons of Heth saying 4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you give me a possession of a burying place with you that I may bury my dead out of my sight 5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham saying unto him 6 Hear us my lord thou art †Heb. a prince of God a mighty prince amongst us in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre but that thou mayest bury thy dead 7 And Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land even to the children of Heth. 8 And he communed with them saying If it be your minde that I should bury my dead out of my sight hear me and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar 9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he hath which is in the end of his field for †Heb. full money as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a burying-place amongst you 10 And Ephron dwelt amongst the children of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the †Heb. ears audience of the children of Heth eveâ— of all that went in at the gates of his city saying 11 Nay my lord hear me the field give I thee and the cave that is therein I give it thee in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee bury thy dead 12 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land 13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land saying But if thou wilt give it I pray thee hear me I will give thee money for the field take it of me and I will bury my dead there 14 And Ephron answered Abraham saying unto him 15 My lord hearken unto me the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver what is that betwixt me thee bury therefore thy dead 16 And Abraham hearkned unto Ephron and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth four hundred shekels of silver currant money with 〈◊〉 merchant 17 ¶ And the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah which was before Maâ—ure the field and the cave which was therein and all the trees that were in the field that were in all the borders round about were made sure 18 Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth before all that went in at the gate of his city 19 And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan 20 And the field and the cave that is therein were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the sons of Heth. CHAP. Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him and said Go not down into Egypt dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of 3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee and will bless thee for unto thee and unto thy seed * Chap. 13.15 15.18 I will give all these countreys and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven and will give unto thy seed all these countreys and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be * Chap. 12.3 22.18 blessed 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge my commandments my statutes and my laws 6 ¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife and he said She in my sister for he feared to say She is my wife lest said he the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah because she was â—air to look upon 8 And it came to pass when he had been there a long time that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window and saw and behold Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife 9 And Abimelech called Isaac and said Behold of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou She is my sister And Isaac said unto him Because I said Lest I die for her 10 And Abimelech said What is this thou hast done unto us one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us 11 And Abimelech charged all his people saying He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land and †Heb. found received in the same year an hundred fold and the LORD blessed him 13 And the man waxed great and †Heb. went going went forward and grew until he became very great 14 For he had possession of flocks and possession of herds and great store of ‖ Or husbandry servants And the Philistines envied him 15 For all the wells which his fathers servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac Go from us for thou art much mightier then we 17 ¶ And Isaac departed thence and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them 19 And Isaacs servants digged in the valley and found there a well of †Heb. livng springing water 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaacs herdmen saying The water is ours and he called the name of the well ‖ That is contention Esek because they strove with him 21 And they digged another well and strove for that also and he called the name of it ‖ That is â—â—tred Sitnah 22 And he removed from thence and digged another well and for that they strove not and he called the name of it ‖ That is room Rehoboth and he said For now the LORD hath made room for us and we shall be fruitful in the land 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night and said I am the God of Abraham thy father fear not for I am with thee and will bless thee and multiply thy seed for my servant Abrahams sake 25 And he builded an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there there Isaacs servants digged a well 26 ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath one of his friends and Phichol the chief captain of his army 27 And Isaac said unto them Wherefore come ye to me seeing ye hate me and have sent me away from you 28 And they said †Heb. Seeing we saw We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee and we said Let there be now an oath betwixt us even betwixt us and thee and let us make a covenant with thee 29 †Heb. if thou shalt c. XXI 1 Of the priests mourning 6 Of their hâ—liness 8 Of their estimation 7 13 Of their marriages 16 The priests that have blemishes must not miniâ—ter in the sanctuary ANd the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron and say unto them There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people 2 But for his kin that is near unto him that is for his mother and for his father and for his son and for his daughter and for his brother 3 And for his sister a virgin that is nigh unto him which hath had no husband for her may he be defiled 4 But ‖ Or being an husband among his people be shall not defile himself for his wife c. he shall not defile himself being a chief man among his people to profane himself 5 * Chap. 19.27 They shall not make baldness upon their head neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh 6 They shall be holy unto their God and not profane the name of their God for the offerings of the LORD made by fire and the bread of their God they do offer therefore they shall be holy 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore or profane neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband for he is holy unto his God 8 Thou shalt sanctifie him therefore for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee for I the LORD which sanctifie you am holy 9 ¶ And the daughter of any priest if she profane her self by playing the whore she profaneth her father she shall be burnt with fire 10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren upon whose head the anointing oyl was poured and that is consecrated to put on the garments shall not uncover his head nor rend his clothes 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body nor defile himself for his father or for his mother 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God for the crown of the anointing oyl of his God is upon him I am the LORD 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginâ—ty 14 A widow or a divorced woman or profane or an harlot these shall he not take but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people for I the LORD do sanctifie him 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 17 Speak unto Aaron saying Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish let him not approach to offer the ‖ Or food bread of his God 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish he shall not approach a blinde man or a lame or he that hath a flat nose or any thing * Chap. 22.23 superfluous 19 Or a man that is broken-footed or broken-handed 20 Or crook-backt or ‖ Or too slender a dwarf or that hath a blemish in his eye or be scurvy or scabbed or hath his stones broken 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire he hath a blemish he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God 22 He shall eat the bread of his God both of the most holy and of the holy 23 Onely he shall not go in unto the vail nor come nigh unto the altar because he hath a blemish that he profane not my sanctuarieâ— for I the LORD do sanctifie them 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron and to his sons and unto all the children of Israel CHAP. XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a †Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water

XVIII 1 The Lord is the priests and Levites inheritance 3 The priests due 6 The Levites portion 9 The abominations of the nations are to be avoided 15 Christ the Prophet is to be heard 20 The presumptuous prophet is to die THe priests the Levites and all the tribe of Levi * Numb 18.20 Chap. 10.9 shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel they * 1 Cor. 9.13 shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire and his inheritance 2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren the LORD is their inheritance as he hath said unto them 3 ¶ And this shall be the priests due from the people from them that offer a sacrifice whether it be ox or sheep and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder and the two cheeâ—s and the maw 4 The first-fruit also of thy corn of thy wine and of thy oyl and the first of the fleece of thy sheep shalt thou give him 5 For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes to stand to minister in the name of the LORD him and his sons for ever 6 ¶ And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel where he sojourned and come with all the desire of his minde unto the place which the LORD shall choose 7 Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God as all his brethren the Levites do which stand there before the LORD 8 They shall
come hither And they compassed him in and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city and were †Heb. silent quiet all the night saying In the morning when it is day we shall kill him 3 And Samson lay till midnight and arose at midnight and took the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts and went away with them †Heb. with the bar bar and all and put them upon his shoulders and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron 4 ¶ And it came to pass afterward that he loved a woman ‖ Or by the bâ—ook in the valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah 5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her and said unto her Entice him and see wherein his great strength lieth and by what means we may prevail against him that we may binde him to ‖ Or humble afflict him and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver 6 And Delilah said to Samson Tell me I pray thee wherein thy great strength lieth and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee 7 And Samson said unto her If they binde me with seven ‖ Or new cords †Heb. moist green wit hs that were never dried then shall I be weak and be as †Heb. one another man 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green wit hs which had not been dried and she bound him with them 9 Now there were men lying in wait abiding with her in the chamber And she said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he brake the wit hs as a threed of tow is broken when it †Heb. smelleth toucheth the fire so his strength was not known 10 And Delilah said unto Samson Behold thou hast mocked me and told me lies now tell me I pray thee wherewith thou mightest be bound 11 And he said unto her If thou binde me fast with new ropes †Heb. wherewith work hath not been done that never were occupied then shall I be weak and be as another man 12 Delilah therefore took new ropes and bound him therewith and said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber And he brake them from off his arms like a threed 13 And Delilah said unto Samson Hitherto thou hast mocked me and told me lies tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound And he said unto her If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web 14 And she fastned it with the pin and said unto him The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he awaked out of his sleep and went away with the pin of the beam and with the web 15 ¶ And she said unto him How canst thou say I love thee when thine heart is not with me Thou hast mocked me these three times and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth 16 And it came to pass when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him so that his soul was †Heb. shortned vexed unto death 17 That he told her all his heart and said unto her There hath not come a rasor upon mine head for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mothers womb if I be shaven then my strength will go from me and I shall become weak and be like any other man 18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines saying Come up this once for he hath shewed me all his heart Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her and brought money in their hand 19 And she make him sleep upon her knees and she called for a man and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head and she began to afflict him and his strength went from him 20 And she said The Philistines be upon thee Samson And he awoke out of his sleep and said I will go out as at other times before and shake my self And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him 21 ¶ But the Philistines took him and †Heb. bored out put out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with fetters of brass and he did grinde in the prison-house 22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again ‖ Or as when he was shaves after he was shaven 23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god and to rejoyce for they said Our God hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand 24 And when the people saw him they praised their god for they said Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy and the destroyer of our countrey †Heb. and who multiplyed our slain which slew many of us 25 And it came to pass when their hearts were merry that they said Call for Samson that he may make us sport And they called for Samson out of the prison-house and he made †Heb. before them them sport and they set him between the pillars 26 And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand Suffer me that I may seel the pillars whereupon the house standeth that I may lean upon them 27 Now the house was full of men and women and all the lords of the Philistines were there and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women that beheld while Samson made sport 28 And Samson called unto the LORD and said O Lord GOD remember me I pray thee and strengthen me I pray thee onely this once O God that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood and ‖ Or. he leaned on them on which it was born up of the one with his right hand and of the other with his left 30 And Samson said Let †Heb. my soul me die with the Philistines and he howed himself with all his might and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people that were therein so the dead which he slew at his death were mo then they which he slew in his life 31 Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father and he judged Israel twenty years CHAP. XVII 1 Of the money that Micah first stole then restored his mother maketh images 5 and he ornaments for them 7 He hireth a Levite to be his priest ANd there was a man of mount Ephraim whose name was Micah 2 And he said unto his mother The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee about which thou curledst and spakest of also in mine
with them for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur that is over against Egypt 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and ‖ Or of the second sort of the fatlings and the lambs and all that was good and would not utterly destroy them but every thing that was vile and refuse that they destroyed utterly 10 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel saying 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king for he is turned back from following me and hath not performed my commandments And it grieved Samuel and he cried unto the LORD all night 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning it was told Samuel saying Saul came to Carmel and behold he set him up a place and is gone about and passed on and gone down to Gilgal 13 And Samuel came to Saul and Saul said unto him Blessed be thou of the LORD I have performed the commandment of the LORD 14 And Samuel said What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear 15 And Saul said They have brought them from the Amalekites for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God and the rest we have utterly destroyed 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul Stay and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night And he said unto him say on 17 And Samuel said When thou wast little in thine own sight wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey and said Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites and fight against them until †Heb. they consume them they be consumed 19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD but didst flie upon the spoil and didst evil in the sight of the LORD 20 And Saul said unto Samuel Yea I have obeyed the voice of the LORD and have gone the way which the LORD sent me and have brought Agag the king of Amalek and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites 21 But the people took of the spoil sheep and oxen the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal 22 And Samuel said Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD Behold * Eccles 5.1 Hos 6.6 Mat. 9.13 12.7 to obey is better then sacrifice and to hearken then the fat of rams 23 For rebellion is as the sin of †Heb. divination witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD he hath also rejected thee from being king 24 ¶ And Saul said unto Samuel I have sinned for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and thy words because I feared the people and obeyed their voice 25 Now therefore I pray thee pardon my sin and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD 26 And Samuel said unto Saul I will not return with thee for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle and it rent 28 And Samuel said unto him The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day and hath given it to a neighbour of thine that is better then thou 29 And also the ‖ Or eternity o◠victory strength of Israel will not lie nor repent for he is not a man that he should repent 30 Then he said I have sinned yet honour me now I pray thee before the elders of my people and before Israel and turn again with me that I may worship the LORD thy God 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul and Saul worshipped the LORD 32 ¶ Then said Samuel Bring you hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites and Agag came unto him delicately And Agag said Surely the bitterness of death is past 33 And Samuel said * Exod. 17.11 Numb 14 45. As thy sword hath made women childless so shall thy mother be childless among women And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal 34 ¶ Then Samuel went to Ramah and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel CHAP. XVI 1 Samuel sent by God under pretense of a sacrifice cometh to Beth-lehem 6 His humane judgement is reproved 11 He anointeth David 19 Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit ANd the LORD said unto Samuel How long wilt thou mourn for Saul seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel fill thine horn with oyl and go I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite for I have provided me a king among his sons 2 And Samuel said How can I go if Saul hear it he will kill me And the LORD said Take an heifer †Heb. in thine hand with thee and say I am come to sacrifice to the LORD 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice and I will shew thee what thou shalt do and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake and came to Beth-lehem and the elders of the town trembled at his †Heb. meeting coming and said Comest thou peaceably 5 And he said Peaceably I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD sanctifie your selves and come with me to the sacrifice And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice 6 ¶ And it came to pass when they were come that he looked on Eliab and said Surely the LORDs anointed is before him 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him for the LORD seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the †Heb. eyes outward appearance but the LORD looketh on the * 1 Chr. 23.9 Psal 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 20.12 heart 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by and he said Neither hath the LORD chosen this 10 Again Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel and Samuel said unto Jesse
the one half of their beardâ— and cut off their garments in the middle even to their buttocks and sent them away 5 When they told it unto David he sent to meet them because the men were greatly ashamed and the king said Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown and then return 6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob and the Syrians of Zoba twenty thousand footmen and of king Maacah a thousand men and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men 7 And when David heard of it he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men 8 And the children of Ammon came out and put the battel in aray at the entring in of the gate and the Syrians of Zoba and of Rehob and Ish-tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battel was against him before and behinde he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in aray against the Syrians 10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother that he might put them in aray against the children of Ammon 11 And he said If the Syrians be too strong for me then thou shalt help me but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee then I will come and help thee 12 Be of good courage and let us play the men for our people and for the cities of our God and the LORD do that which seemeth him good 13 And Joab drew nigh and the people that were with him unto the battel against the Syrians and they fled before him 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled then fled they also before Abishai and entred into the city so Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem 15 ¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel they gathered themselves together 16 And Hadarezer sent and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river and they came to Helam and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them 17 And when it was told David he gathered all Israel together and passed over Jordan and came to Helam and the Syrians set themselves in aray against David and fought with him 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians and fourty thousand horsâ—men and smote Shobach the captain of their host who died there 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel they made peace with Israel and served them So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more CHAP. XI 1 While Joab besieged Rabbah David committeth adultery with Bath-sheba 6Vriah sent for by David to cover the adultery would not go home neither soler nor drunken 14 He carrieth to Joab the Letter of his death 18 Joab sendeth the news thereof to David 26 David taketh Bath-sheba to wife ANd it came to pass that †Heb. at the return of the year after the year was expired at the time when kings go forth to battel that * 1 Chr. 20.1 David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel and they destroved the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah but David tarried still at Jerusalem 2 ¶ And it came to paâ—s in an evening-tide that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the kings house and from the roof he saw a woman washing her self and the woman was very beautiful to look upon 3 And David sent and enquired after the woman and one said Is not this Bathsheba the daughter of Eliam the wife of Uriah the Hittite 4 And David sent messengers and took her and she came in unto him and he lay with her ‖ Or and when she had purified her self c. she returned for she was * Lev. 15.19 18.19 purified from her uncleanness and she returned unto her house 5 And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said I am with childe 6 ¶ And David sent to Joab saying send me Uriah the Hittite And Joab sent Uriah to David 7 And when Uriah was come unto him David demanded of him †Heb. of the peace of c. how Joab did and how the people did and how the war prospered 8 And David said to Uriah Go down to thy house and wash thy feet And Uriah departed out of the kings house and there †Heb. went out after him followed him a mess of meat from the king 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the kings house with all the servants of his lord and went not down to his house 10 And when they had told David saying Uriah went not down unto his house David said unto Uriah Camest thou not from thy journey why then didst thou not go down unto thine house 11 And Uriah said unto David The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields shall I then go into mine house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife as thou livest and as thy soul liveth I will not do this thing 12 And David said to Uriah Tarry here to day also and to morrow I will let thee depart So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the morrow 13 And when David had called him he did eat and drink before him and he made him drunk and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord but went not down to his house 14 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah 15 And he wrote in the letter saying Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the †Heb. strong hottest battel and retire ye †Heb. from aftâ—â— him from him that he may be finitten and die 16 And it came to pass when Joab observed the city that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were 17 And the men of the city went out and fought with Joab and there fell some of the people of the servants of David and Uriah the Hittite died also 18 ¶ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war 19 And charged the messenger saying When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king 20 And it so be that the kings wrath arise and he say unto thee Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall 21 Who smote * Judgâ—â— 9. â—3 Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth did not a woman cast a piece of a milstone upon him from the wall that he died in Thebez why went ye nigh

XIV 1 Abijah being sick Jeroboam sendeth his wife disguised with presents to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh 5 Ahijah forewarned by God denounceth Gods judgement 17 Abijah dieth and is buried 19 Nadab succeedeth Jeroboam 21 Rehoboams wicked reign 25 Shishak spoileth Jerusalem 29 Abijam succeedeth Rehoboam AT that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam sell sick 2 And Jeroboam said to his wife Arise I pray thee and disguise thy self that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam and get thee to Shiloh behold there is Ahijah the prophet which told me that * Ch. 11.31 I should be king over this people so and arose and went to Shiloh and came to the house of Ahijah but Ahijah could not see for his eyes †Heb. stood for his hoariness were set by reason of his age 5 ¶ And the LORD said unto Ahijah Behold the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son for he is sick thus and thus shalt thou say unto her for it shall be when she cometh in that she shall feign her self to be another woman 6 And it was so when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door that he said Come in thou wife of Jeroboam why feignest thou thy self to be another for I am sent to thee with †Heb. haâ—d heaâ—ie tidings 7 Go tell Jeroboam thus saith the LORD God of Israel Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people and made thee prince over my people Israel 8 And rent the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it thee and yet thou hast not been as my servant David who kept my commandments and who followed me with all his heart to do that onely which was right in mine eyes 9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee for thou hast gone and made thee other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger and hast cast me behinde thy back 10 Therefore behold * Ch. 15.29 I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam * Ch. 21.21 2 Kin. 9.8 him that pisseth against the wall and him that is shut up and left in Israel and up a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day but what even now 15 For the LORD shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water and he shall root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves provoking the LORD to anger 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and who made Israel to sin 17 ¶ And Jeroboams wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah and when she came to the threshold of the door the childe died 18 And they buried him and all Israel mourned for him according to the word of the LORD which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet 19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam how he warred and how he reigned behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years and he †Heb. lay dowâ— slept with his fathers and Nadab his son reigned in his stead 21 ¶ And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah * 2 Chr. 12.13 Rehoboam was fourty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there and his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess 22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD and they provoked him to jealousie with their sins which they had committed above all that their fathers had done 23 For they also built them high places and ‖ Or standing images or statues images and groves Solomon his father while he yet lived saying What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people 7 And they spake unto him saying If thou be kinde to this people and please them and speak good words to them they will be thy servants for ever 8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him that stood before him 9 And he said unto them What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people which have spoken to me saying Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us 10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him saying Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee saying Thy father made our yoke heavy but make thou it somewhat lighter for us thus shalt thou say unto them My little finger shall be thicker then my fathers loyns 11 For whereas my father †Heb. lâ—ded put a heavy yoke upon you I will put more to your yoke my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king bade saying Come again to me on the third day 13 And the king answered them roughly and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men 14 And answered them after the advice of the young men saying My father made your yoke heavy but I will add thereto my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 15 So the king hearkned not unto the people for the cause was of God that the LORD might perform his word which he spake by the * 1 King 11.29 hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat 16 ¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them the people answered the king saying What portion have we in David and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse every man to your tents O Israel and now David see to thine own house So all Israel went to their tents 17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah Rehoboam reigned over them 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute and the children of Israel stoned him with stones that he died but king Rehoboam †Heb. strengthneâ— himself made speed to get him up to his chariot to flee to Jerusalem 19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day CHAP. XI 1 Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel is forbidden by Shemaiah 5 He strengthneth his kingdom with forts and provision 13 The priests and Levites and such as feared God forsaken by Jeroboam strengthen the kingdom of Judah 18 The wives and children of Rehoboam ANd * 1 King 12.21 c. when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men which were warriours to fight against Israel that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam 2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God saying 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin saying 4 Thus saith the LORD Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren return every man to his house for this thing is done of me And they obeyed the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam 5 ¶ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah 6 He built even Beth-lehem and Etam and Tekoa 7 And Beth-zur and Shoco and Adullam 8 And Gath and Mareshah and Ziph 9 And Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah 10 And Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities 11 And he fortified the strong holds and put captains in them and store of victual and of oyl and wine 12 And in every several city be put shields and spears and made them exceeding strong having Judah and Benjamin on his side 13 ¶ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel †Heb. presented themselves to him resorted to him out of all their coasts 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession came to Judah and Jerusalem for * Chap. 13.9 Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priests office unto the LORD 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places and for the devils and for the calves which he had made 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers 17 So they strengthned the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong three years for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon 18 ¶ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse 19 Which bare him children Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham 20 And after her he took * 1 King 15.2 Maachah the daughter of Absalom which bare him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith 21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines for he took eighteen wives and threescore concubines and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters 22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief to be ruler among his brethren for he thought to make him king 23 And he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countreys of Judah and Benjamin unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance and he desired †Heb. a multitude of wives many wives CHAP. XII 1 Rehoboam forsaking the Lord is punished by Shishak 5 He and the princes repenting at the preaching of Shemaiah are delivered from destruction but not from spoil 13 The reign and death of Rehoboam ANd it came to pass when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthned himself he forsook the law of the LORD and all Israel with him 2 And it came to pass that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem * 1 Kin. 14.14 21. because they had transgressed against the LORD 3 With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand hors-men and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt the Lubims the Sukkiims and the Ethiopians 4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak and said unto them Thus saith the LORD Ye have forsaken me and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak 6
commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers and to do the law and the commandment 5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the †Heb. sun-images images and the kingdom was quiet before him 6 ¶ And he built fenced cities in Judah for the land had rest and he had no war in those years because the LORD had given him rest 7 Therefore he said unto Judah Let us build these cities and make about them walls and towers gates and bars while the land is yet before us because we have sought the LORD our God we have sought him and he hath given us rest on every side so they built and prospered 8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears out of Judah three hundred thousand and out of Benjamin that bare shields and drew bowes two hundred and fourscore thousand all these were mighty men of valour 9 ¶ * Chap. 16.8 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand and three hundred chariots and came unto Mareshah 10 Then Asa went out against him and they set the battel in aray in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah 11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God and said LORD it is * 1 Sam. 14.6 nothing with thee to help whether with many or with them that have no power help us O LORD our God for we rest on thee and in thy name we go against this multitude O LORD thou art our God set not ‖ Or mortal man man prevail against thee 12 So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah and the Ethiopians fled 13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar and the Ethiopians were overthrown that they could not recover themselves for they were †Heb. broken destroyed before the LORD and before his host and they carried away very much spoil 14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar for the fear of the LORD came upon them and they spoiled all the cities for there was exceeding much spoil in them 15 They smote also the tents of cattel and carried away sheep and camels in abundance and returned to Jerusalem CHAP. XV. 1 Asa with Judah and many of Israel moved by the prophesie of Azariah the son of Oded make a solemn covenant with God 16 He putteth down Maachah his mother for her idolatry 18 He bringeth dedicate things into the house of God and enjoyeth a long peace ANd the spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded 2 And he went out †Heb. before Asa to meet Asa and said unto him Hear ye me Asa and all Judah and Benjamin The LORD is with you while ye be with him and if ye seek him he will be found of you but if ye forsake him he will forsake you 3 Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God and without a teaching priest and without law 4 But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel and sought him he was found of them 5 And in those times there was no peace to him that went out nor to him that came in but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countreys 6 And nation was †Heb. beaten in pieces destroyed of nation and city of city for God did vex them with all adversity 7 Be ye strong therefore and let not your hands be weak for your work shall be rewarded 8 And when Asa heard these words and the prophesie of Oded the prophet he took courage and put away the †Heb. abominations abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim and renewed the altar of the LORD that was before the porch of the LORD 9 And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh and out of Simeon for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance when they saw that the LORD his God was with him 10 So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third moneth in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa 11 And they offered unto the LORD †Heb. in that day the same time of the spoil which they had brought seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep 12 And they entred into a covenant to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul 13 That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel * Deut. 13.9 should be put to death whether small or great whether man or woman 14 And they sware unto the LORD with a loud voice and with shouting and with trumpets and with cornets 15 And all Judah rejoyced at the oath for they had sworn with all their heart and sought him with their whole desire and he was found of them and the LORD gave them rest round about 16 ¶ And also concerning * 1 Kin. 15.13 Maachah the mother of Asa the king he removed her from being queer because she had made an †Heb. borrour idol in a grove and Asa cut down her idol and stamped it and burnt it at the brook Kidron 17 But the high places were not taken away out of Israel nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days 18 ¶ And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated and that he himself had dedicated silver and gold and vessels 19 And there was no more war unto the sive and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa CHAP. XVI 1 Asa by the aid of the Syrians diverteth Baasha from building of Ramah 7 Being reproved thereof by Hanani be putteth him in prison 11 Among his other acts in his disease he seeketh not to God but to the physitians 13 His death and burial IN the six and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa * 1 Kin. 15.17 Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and built Ramah to the intent that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah 2 Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the kings house and sent to Ben-hadad king of Syria that dwelt at †Heb. Darmesek Damascus saying 3 There is a league between me and thee as there was between my father and thy father behold I have sent thee silver and gold go break thy league with Baasha king of Israel that he may depart from me 4 And Ben-hadad hearkned unto king Asa and sent the captains of †Heb. which were his his armies against the cities of Israel and they smote ljon and Dan and Abel-maim and all the store cities of Naphtali 5 And it came to pass when Baasha heard it that he left off building of Ramah and let
of Ahab and found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah that ministred to Ahaziah he slew them 9 * 2 Kin. 9.27 And he fought Ahaziah and they caught him for he was hid in Samaria and brought him to Jehu and when they had slain him they buried him because said they he is the son of Jehoshaphat who fought the LORD with all his heart So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom 10 ¶ * 2 Kin. 11. â— But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead she arose destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah 11 But Jehoshabeath the daughter of the king took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the kings sons that were slain and put him and his nurse in a bed-chamber So Jehoshabeath the daughter of King Jehoram the wife of Jehoiada the priest for she was the sister of Ahaziah hid him from Athaliah so that she slew him not 12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years and Athaliah reigned over the land CHAP. XXIII 1 Jehoiada having sit things in order maketh Joash king 12 Athaliah is slain 16. Jehoiada restoreth the worship of God ANd * 2 Kin. 11.4 c. in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthned himself and took the captains of hundreds Azariah the son of Jeroham and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan and Azar ah the son of Obed and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah and Elishaphat the son of Zichri into covenant with him 2 And they went about in Judah and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah and the chief of the fathers of Israel and they came to Jerusalem 3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God and he said unto them Behold the kings son shall reign as the LORD hath * 2 Sam. 7.12 1 Kin. 2 4. and 9.5 Châ—â— 16. and 7.18 said of the sons of David 4 This is the thing that ye shall do A third part of you entring on the sabbath of the priests and of the Levites shali be porters of the †Heb. â—tresâ—olds doors 5 And a third part shall be at the kings house and a third part at the gate of the foundation and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD 6 But let none come into the house of the LORD save the priests and they that minister of the Levites they shall go in for they are holy but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD 7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about every man with his weapons in his hand and whosoever else cometh into the house he shall be put to death but be you with the king when he cometh in and when he goeth out 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded and took every man his men that were to come in on the saboath with them that were to go out on the sabbath for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses 9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears and bucklers and shields that had been king Davids which were in the house of God 10 And he set all the people every man having his weapon in his hand from the right †Heb. shoulder side of the †Heb. house temple to the left side of the temple along by the altar and the temple by the king round about 11 Then they brought out the kings son and put upon him the crown and * Deu. 17.18 gave him the testimony and made him king and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said †Heb. Let the king live God save the king 12 ¶ Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king she came to the people into the house of the LORD 13 And she looked and behold the king stood at his pillar at the entring in and the princes and the trumpets by the king and all the people of the land rejoyced and sounded with trumpets also the singers with instruments of musick and such as taught to sing praise Then Athaliah rent her clothes and said †Heb. conspiracy Treason treason 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host and said unto them Have her forth of the ranges and whoso followeth her let him be slain with the sword For the priest said Slay her not in the house of the LORD 15 So they laid hands on her and when she was come to the entring of the hors gate by the kings house they slew her there 16 ¶ And Jehoiada made a covenant between him and between all the people and between the king that they should be the LORDS people 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and brakeit down and brake his altars and his images in pieces and * Deu. 13.9 slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites whom David had * 1 Chr. 24.1 distributed in the house of the LORD to offer the burnt-offerings of the LORD as it is written in the * Na. 28.2 law of Moses with rejoyting and with singing as it was ordained †Heb. by the hands of David by David 19 And he set the * 1 Chr 26 1 c. porters at the gates of the house of the LORD that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in 20 And he took the captains of hundreds and the nobles and the governours of the people and all the people of the land and brought down the king from the house of the LORD and they came through the high gate into the kings house and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom 21 And all the people of the land rejoyced and the city was quiet after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword CHAP. XXIV 1 Joash reigneth well all the days of Jehoiada 4 He giveth order for the repair of the temple 15 Jehoiada his death and honourable burial 17 Joash falling to idolatry slayeth Zechariah the son of Jehoiada 23 Joash is spoiled by the Syrians and slain by Zabad and Jehozabad 37 Amaziah succeedeth him JOash * 2 Kin. 12 1 c was seven years old when he began to reign and he reigned fourty years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Zibeah of Beer-sheba 2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest 3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives and he begat sons and daughters 4 ¶ And it came to pass after this that Joash was minded †Heb. to renew to repair the house of the LORD 5 And
an hundred talents of silver 7 But there came a man of God to him saying O king let not the army of Israel go with thee for the LORD is not with Israel to wit with all the children of Ephraim 8 But if thou wilt go do it be strong for the battel God shall make thee sall before the enemy for God hath power to help and to cast down 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the †Heb. cand army of Israel And the man of God answered The LORD is able to give thee much more then this 10 Then Amaziah separated them to wit the army that was come to him out of Ephraim to go †Heb. to their place home again wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah and they returned home †Heb. in â—eat of anger in great anger 11 ¶ And Amaziah strengthned himself and led forth his people and went to the valley of salt and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand 12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive brought them unto the top of the rock and cast them down from the top of the rock that they were broken all in pieces 13 ¶ But †Heb. the sons of the band the souldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back that they should not go with him to battel fell upon the cities of Judah from Samaria even unto Beth-horon and smote three thousand of them and took much spoil 14 ¶ Now it came to pass after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites that he brought the gods of the children of Seir and set them up to be his gods and bowed down himself before them and burned incense unto them 15 Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah and he sent unto him a prophet which said unto him Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand 15 And it came to pass as he talked with him that the kine said unto him Art thou made of the kings counsel forbear why shouldest thou be imitten Then the prophet forbare and said I know that God hath †Heb. counselled determined to destroy thee because thou hast done this and hast not hearkened unto my counsel 17 ¶ Then * 2 King 14.9 Amaziah king of Judah took advice and sent to Jeash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us see one another in the sace 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The ‖ Or furâ—ush or thern thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by †Heb. a beest of the field a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and rod down the thistle 19 Thou sayest Lo thou hast smitten the Edomites and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast abide now at home why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 20 But Amaziah would not hear for it came of God that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies because they sought after the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash the king of Israel went up and they saw one another in the face both he and Amaziah king of Judah at Beth-shemesh which belonceth to Judah 22 And Judah was †Heb. smitten put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to his tent 23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to †Heb. the gate of it that looketh the corner-gate four hundred cubits 24 And be took all the gold and the silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom and the treasures of the kings house the hostages also and returned to Samaria 25 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah first and last behold are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel 27 ¶ Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away †Heb. from after from following the LORD they †Heb. conspired a conspiracy made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent to Lachish after him and slew him there 28 And they brought him upon horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of ‖ That is the city of David as it is 2 Kin. 14 20 Judah CHAP. XXVI 1Vzziah succeeding and reigning well in the days of Zechariah prospereth 16 Waxing proud be invadeth the priests office and is smitten with leprosie 22 He dieth and Jotham succeedeth him THen all the people of Judah took * 2 King 14.21 and 15.1 ‖ Or â—zariah Uzziah who was sixteen years old and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah 2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 3 Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem 4 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD accerding to all that his father Amaziah did 5 And he sought God in the days of Zechariah who had understanding †Heb. in the seeing of God in the visions of God and as long as he sought the LORD God made him to prosper 6 And he went forth and warred against the Philistines and brake down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod and built cities ‖ Or in the countrey of Ashdod about Ashdod and among the Philistines 7 And God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-baal and the Mehunims 8 And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah and his name †Heb. went spead abroad even to the entring in of Egypt for he strenthned himself exceedingly 9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner-gate and at the valley gate and at the turning of the wall and ‖ Or repaired fortified them 10 Also he built towers in the desert and ‖ Or cut out many cisterns digged many wells for he had much cattel both in the low-countrey and in the plains husbandmen also and vine-dressers in the mountains and in ‖ Or fruitful fields Carmel for he loved †Heb. ground husbandry 11 Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men that went out to war by bands according to the number
a great feast unto all his princes and his servants even Esthers feast and he made a †Heb. rest release to the provinces and gave gifts according to the state of the king 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time then Mordecai sat in the kings gate 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people as Mordecai had charged her for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai like as when she was brought up with him 21 ¶ In those days while Mordecai sat in the kings gate two of the kings chamberlains ‖ Or Bigthana ch 6.2 Bigthan and Teresh of those which kept †Heb. the threshold the door were wroth and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai who told it unto Esther the queen and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter it was found out therefore they were both hanged on a tree and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king CHAP. III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live
not stumble 13 Take fast hold of instruction let her not go keep her for she is thy life 14 ¶ * Psal 1.1 Chap. 1.10 15. Enter not into the path of the wicked and go not in the way of evil men 15 Avoid it pass not by it turn from it and pass away 16 For they sleep not except they have done mischief and their sleep is taken away unless they cause some to fall 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence 18 But the path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day 19 The way of the wicked is as darkness they know not at what they stumble 20 ¶ My son attend to my words incline thine ear unto my sayings 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes keep them in the midst of thine heart 22 For they are life unto those that finde them and †Heb. â—â—u licine health to all their flesh 23 ¶ Keep thy heart †Heb. above all keeping with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life 24 Put away from thee †Heb. forwardness of mouth and pereversness of lips a froward mouth and perverse lips put far from thee 25 Let thine eyes look right on and let thine eye-lids look straight before thee 26 Ponder the path of thy feet and ‖ Or all thâ— ways shall be ordered aright let all thy ways be established 27 * Deut. 5.32 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left remove thy foot from evil CHAP. Heb. sons of the people common people 24 Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death CHAP. XXVII 1Vnder the type of bonds and yokes be prophesieth the subduing of the neighbour kings unto Nehuchadnezzar 8 He exhorteth them to yield and not to beleeve the false prophets 12 The like he doth to Zedekiah 19 He foretelleth the remnant of the vessels shall be carried to Babylon and there continue until the day of visitation IN the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Thus saith the LORD to me Make thee bonds and yokes and put them upon thy neck 3 And send them to the king of Edom and to the king of Moab and to the king of the Ammonites and to the king of Tyrus and to the king of Zidon by the hand of the messengers which come to Jerusalem unto Zedekiah king of Judah 4 And command them ‖ Or concerning their masters saying to say unto their masters Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Thus shall ye say unto your masters 5 I have made the earth the man and the beast that are upon the ground by my great power and by my outstretched arm and * Dan. 4.17 25. have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me 6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon * Ch. 25.9 43.10 my servant and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him 7 And all nations shall serve him and his son and his sons son until the very time of his land come and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him 8 And it shall come to pass that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon that nation will I punish saith the LORD with the sword and with the famine and with the pestilence until I have consumed them by his hand 9 Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets nor to your diviners nor to your †Heb. deâ—ams dreamers nor to your enchanters nor to your sorcerers which speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon 10 For they prophesie a lie unto you to remove you far from your land and that I should drive you out and ye should perish 11 But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him those will I let remain still in their own land saith the LORD and they shall till it and dwell therein 12 ¶ I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words saying Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him and his people and live 13 Why will ye die thou and thy people by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence as the LORD hath spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon 14 Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon for they prophesie * Ch. 14.14 and 23.21 and 27.8 a lie unto you 15 For I have not sent them saith the LORD yet they prophesie †Heb. in a lie or lyingly a lie in my name that I might drive you out and that ye might perish ye and the prophets that prophesie unto you 16 Also I spake to the priests and to all this people saying Thus saith the LORD Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesie unto you saying Behold the vessels of the LORDS house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon for they prophesie a lie unto you 17 Hearken not unto them serve the king of Babylon and live wherefore should this city be laid waste 18 But if they be prophets and if the word of the LORD be with them let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts that the vessels which are lest in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and at Jerusalem go not to Babylon 19 ¶ For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars and concerning the sea and concerning the bases and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city 20 Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not when he carried away * 2 Kin. 24.14 15. captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem 21 Yea thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem 22 They shall be * 2 Kim 25.13 2 Chr. 36.18 carried to Babylon and there shall they be until the day that I * 2 Chr. 36.22 Ch. 29.10 visit them saith the LORD then will I bring them up and restore them to this place CHAP. XXVIII 1 Hananiah prophesieth falsly the return of the vessels and of Jeconiah 5 Jeremiah wishing it to be true sheweth that the event will declare who are true prophets 10 Hananiah breaketh Jeremiahs yoke 12 Jeremiah telleth of an iron yoke 15 and foretelleth Hananiahs death ANd it came to pass the same year in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fourth year and in the fifth moneth that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet which was of Gibeon spake unto me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and of all the people saying 2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon 3 Within †Heb. two years of days two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORDs house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this Place and carried them to Babylon 4 And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah with all the †Heb. captivity captives of Judah that went into Babylon saith the LORD for I will break the yoke of the king of Babalon 5 ¶ Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD 6 Even the prophet Jeremiah said Amen The LORD do so the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied to bring again the vessels of the LORDS house and all that is carried away captive from Babylon into this place 7 Nevertheless hear thou now this word that I speak in thine ears and in the ears of all the people 8 The prophets that have
her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be †Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he †Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he †Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in †Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal †Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ◠14. c. captain of the guard which †Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD †Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a †Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the
pomegranate upon the net-work were an hundred round about 24 ¶ And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest and Zephaniah the second priest and the three keepers of the †Heb. threshold door 25 He took also out of the city an eunuch which had the charge of the men of war and seven men of them that †Heb. saw the face of the king were near the kings person which were found in the city and the ‖ Or scribe of the captain of the host principal scribe of the host who mustered the people of the land and threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the midst of the city 26 So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of babylon to Riblah 27 And the king of Babylon smote them and put them to death in Riblah in the land of Hamath Thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land 28 This is the people whom Nebuchadrezzar carried away captive in the seventh year three thousand Jews and three and twenty 29 In the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty and two †Heb. souls persons 30 In the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadrezzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred fourty and five persons all the persons were four thousand and six hundred 31 ¶ And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehosachin king of Judah in the twelfth moneth in the five and twentieth day of the moneth that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lilted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him forth out of prison 32 And spake †Heb. good things with him kindly unto him and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon 33 And changed his prison-garments and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life 34 And for his diet there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon †Heb. the matter of the day in his day every day a portion until the day of his death all the days of his life ¶ The LAMENTATIONS of JEREMIAH CHAP. 1. 1 The miserable estate of Jerusalem by reason of her sin 12 She complaineth of her grief 18 and confesseth Gods judgement to be righteous HOw doth the city sit solitary that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was great among the nations and princess among the provinces how is she become tributary 2 She * Jer. 13.17 weepeth sore in the * Job 7.3 night and her tears are on her cheeks among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her all her friends have dealt treacherously with her they are become her enemies 3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction and †Heb. for the treateâ— of servitude because of great servitude she dwelleth among the heathen she findeth no rest all her persecutours overtook her between the straits 4 The ways of Zion do mourn because none come to the solemn feasts all her gates are desolate her priests sigh her virgins are afflicted and she is in bitterness 5 Her adversaries * Deu. 28.13 14. are the chief her enemies prosper for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions her * Jer. 52.28 children are gone into captivity before the enemy 6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed her princes are become like harts that finde no pasture and they are gone without strength before the pursuer 7 Jerusalem remembred in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things that she had in the days of old when her people fell into the hand of the enemy and none did help her the adversaries saw her and did mock at her sabbaths 8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned therefore she †Heb. is become 〈◊〉 removing or wandering is removed all that honoured her despise her because they have seen her nakedness yea she sigheth and turneth backward 9 Her filthiness is in her skirts she remembreth not her last end therefore she came down wonderfully she had no comforter O LORD behold my affliction for the enemy hath magnified himself 10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her ‖ Or desirable pleasant things for she hath are wreathed and come up upon my neck he hath made my strength to fall the Lord hath delivered me into their hands from whom I am notable to rise up 15 The Lord hath troden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men the Lord hath troden ‖ Or the wine-press of the viram c. the virgin the daughter of Judah as in a wine-press 16 For and my young men are gone into captivity 19 I called for my lovers but they deceived me my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city while they sought their meat to relieve their souls 20 old 15 But before he died he heard of the destruction of Nineve which was taken by Nabuchodonosor and Assuerus and before his death he rejoyced over Nineve ¶ JUDITH CHAP. I. 2 Arphaxed doth fortify Echatane 5 Nabuchodonosor maketh war against him 7 and craveth aid 12 He threatneth those that would not aid him 15 and killeth Arphaxad 16 and returneth to Nineve IN the twelfth year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor who reigned in Nineve the great city in the days of Arphaxad which reigned over the Medes in Ecbatane 2 And built in Ecbatane walls round about of stones hewn three cubits broad and six cubits long and made the height of the wall seventy cubits and the breadth thereof fifty cubits 3 And set the towers thereof upon the gates of it an hundred cubits â—igh and the breadth thereof in the foundation threescore cubits 4 And he made the gates thereof even gates that were railed to the height of seventy cubits and the breadth of them was fourty cubits for the going forth of his mighty armies and for the setting in aray of his footmen 5 Even in those days king Nabuchodonosor made war with king Arphaxad in the great plain which is the plain in the borders of Ragau. 6 And there came unto him all they that dwelt in the hill-countrey and all that dwelt by Euphrates and Tigris and Hydaspe and the plain of Arioch the king of the Elymeans and very many nations of the sons of Chelod assembled themselves to the battel 7 Then Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians sent unto all that dwelt in Persia and to all that dwelt west-ward and to those that dwelt in Cilicia and Damascus and Libanus and Antilibanus and to all that dwelt upon the sea-coast 8 And to those amongst the nations that were of Carmel and Galaad and the higher Galilee and the great plain of Esdrelom 9 And to all that were in Samaria and the cities thereof and beyond Jordan unto Jerusalem and Betane and Chellus and Kades and the river of Egypt and Taphnes and Ramess all the land of Gesem 10 Until you come beyond Tanis and Memphis and to all the inhabitants of Egypt until you come to the borders of Ethiopia 11 But all the inhabitants of the land made light of the commandment of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians neither went they with him to the battel for they were not afraid of him yea he was before them as one man and they sent away his ambassadours from them without effect and with disgrace 12 Therefore Nabuchodonosor was very angry with all this countrey and sware by his throne and kingdom that he would surely be avenged upon all those coasts of Cilicia and Damascus and Syria and that he would slay with the sword all the inhabitants of the land of Moab and the children of Ammon and all Judea and all that were in Egypt till you come to the borders of the two seas 13 Then he marched in battel-aray with his power against king Arphaxad in the seventeenth year and he prevailed in his battel for he overthrew all the power of Arphaxad and all his hors-men and all his chariots 14 And became lord of his cities and came unto Ecbatane and took the towers and spoiled the streets thereof and turned the beauty thereof into shame 15 He took also Arphaxad in the mountains of Ragau and smote him through with his darts and destroyed him utterly that day 16 So he returned afterward to Nineve both he and all his company of sundry nations being a very great multitude of men of war and there he took his ease and banqueted both he and his army an hundred and twenty days CHAP. II. 4 Holofernes is appointed general 11 and charged to spare none that will not yeeld 15 His army and provision 23 the places which he won and wasted as he went ANd in the eighteenth year the two and twentieth day of the first moneth there was talk in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should as he said avenge himself on all the earth 2 So he called unto him all his officers and all his nobles and communicated with them his secret counsel and * 1 Sam. 20.7 25.17 concluded the afflicting of the whole earth out of his own mouth 3 Then they decreed to destroy all flesh that did not obey the commandment of his mouth 4 And when he had ended his counsel Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army which was †Gr. second man next unto him and said unto him 5 Thus saith the great king the lord of the whole earth Behold thou shalt go forth from my presence and take with thee men that trust in their own strength of footmen an hundred and twenty thousand and the number of horses with their riders twelve thousand 6 And thou shalt go against all the west-countrey because they disobeyed my commandment 7 And thou shalt declare unto them that they prepare for me ‖ After the manner of the kings of Persiâ— to whom earth and water was wont to be given to acknowledge that they were lords of land and sea Herodotus earth and water for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine army and I will give them for a spoil unto them 8 So that their slain shall fill their valleys and brooks and the river shall be filled with their dead till it overflow 9 And I will lead them captives to the utmost parts of all the earth 10 Thou therefore shalt go forth and take before-hand for me all their coasts and if they will yeeld themselves unto thee thou shalt reserve them for me till the day of their punishment 11 But concerning them that rebel let not thine eyes spare them but put them to the slaughter and spoil them wheresoever thou goest 12 For as I live and by the power of my kingdom whatsoever I have spoken that will I do by mine hand 13 And take thou heed that thou transgress none of the commandments of thy lord but accomplish them fully as I have commanded thee and defer not to do them 14 Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord and called all the governours and captains and the officers of the army of Assur 15 And he mustered the chosen men for the battel as his lord had commanded him unto an hundred and twenty thousand and twelve thousand archers on hors-back 16 And he ranged them as a great army is ordered for the war 17 And he took camels and asses for their carriages a very great number and sheep and oxen and goats without number for their provision 18 And plenty of victual for every man of the army and very much gold and silver out of the kings house 19 Then he went forth and all his power to go before king Nabuchodonosor in the voyage and to cover all
one accord and said unto her Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem thou art the great glory of Israel thou art the great rejoycing of our nation 10 Thou hast done all these thingâ— by thine hand thou hast done much good to Israel and God is pleased therewith blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore and all the people said So be it 11 And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent and all his plate and beds and vessels and all his stuff and she took it and laid it on her mule and made ready her carts and laid them thereon 12 Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her and blessed her and made a dance among them for her and she took branches in her hand and gave also to the women that were with her 13 And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her and she went before all the people in the dance leading all the women and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands and with longs in their mouths CHAP. XVI 6 The song of Judith 19 She dedicateth the stuff of Holofernes 23 She died at Bethullas a widow of great honour 24 All Israel did lament her death THen Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel and all the people sang after her ‖ Or. this prâ—ising this song of praise 2 And Judith said Begin unto my God with timbrels sing unto my Lord with cymbals tune unto him a ‖ Or. Psalm and praise new psalm exalt him and call upon his name 3 For God breaketh the battels for amongst the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me 4 Assur came out of the mountains from the north he came with ten thousands of his army the * Chap. 2.19 multitude whereof stopped the torrents and their hors-men have covered the hills 5 He bragged that he would burn up my borders and kill my young men with the sword and dash the sucking children against the ground and make mine infants as a prey and my virgins as a spoil 6 But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman 7 For the mighty one did not fall by the young men neither did the sons of the Titans smite him nor high giants set upon him but Judith the daughter of Merari weakned him with the beauty of her countenance 8 For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel and anointed her face with ointment and bound her hair in a †Gr. mitrâ— tire and took a linen garment to deceive him 9 Her sandals ravished his eyes her beauty took his minde prisoner and the fauchion passed through his neck 10 The Perlians quaked at her boldness and the Medes were ‖ Or confounded daunted at her hardiness 11 Then my afflicted shouted for joy and my weak ones cried aloud but ‖ the Assyrians they were astonished these lifted up their voices but they were overthrown 12 The sons of the damsels have pierced them through and wounded them as fugitives children they perished by the battel of the Lord. 13 I will sing unto the Lord ‖ Or a song of praise a new song O Lord thou art great and glorious wonderful in strength and invincible 14 Let all creatures serve thee for thou spakest and they were made thou didst send forth thy spirit and it created them and there is none that can resist thy voice 15 For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee 16 For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt-offering but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times 17 Wo to the nations that rise up against my kindred the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement in putting fire and worms in their flesh and they shall feel them and weep for ever 18 Now assoon as they entred into Jerusalem they worshipped the Lord and assoon as the people were purified they offered their burnt-offerings and their free-offerings and their gifts 19 Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes which the people had given her and gave the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber for a gift unto the Lord. 20 So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three moneths and Judith remained with them 21 After this time every one returned to his own inheritance and Judith went to Bethulia and remained in her own possession and was in her time honourable in all the countrey 22 And many desired her but none knew her all the days of her life after that Manasses her husband was dead and was gathered to his people 23 But she increased more and more in honour and waxed old in her husbands house being an hundred and five years old and made her maid free so she died in Bethulia and they buried her in the ‖ Or sepulebre cave of her husband Manasses 24 And the house of Israel lamented her * Gen. 50.10 seven days and before she died she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband and to them that were the nearest of her kindred 25 And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith nor a long time after her death ¶ The rest of the chapters of the book of ESTHER which are found neither in the Hebrew nor in the Caldee Part of the tenth Chapter after the Greek 5 Mardotheus remembreth and expoundeth his dream of the river and the two draâ—ons THen Mardocheus said God hath done these things 5 For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters and nothing thereof hath failed 6 A little fountain became a river and there was light and the sun and much water this river is Esther whom the king married and made queen 7 And the two dragons are I and Aman. 8 And the nations were those that were assembled to destroy the name of the Jews 9 And my nation is this Israel which cried to God and were saved for the Lord hath saved his people and the Lord hath delivered us from all those evils and God hath wrought signs and great wonders which have not been done among the Gentiles 10 Therefore hath he made two lots one for the people of God and another for all the Gentileâ— 11 And these two lots came at the hour and time and day of Judgement before God amongst all nations 12 So God remembred his people and justified his inheritance 13 Therefore those days shall be unto them in

IV. 1 The â—baste man shall be crowned 3 Bastard slips shall not thrive 6 They shall witness against their parents 7 The just die young and are happy 19 The miserable end of the wicked BEtter it is to have no children and to have vertue for the memorial thereof is immortal because it is ‖ Or approved known with God and with men 2 When it is present men take example at it and when it is gone they desire it it weareth a crown and triumpheth for ever having gotten the victory striving for undefiled rewards 3 But the multiplying brood of the ungodly shall not thrive nor take deep rooting from bastard slips nor lay any fast foundation 4 For though they flourish in branches for a time * Matth. 7.19 yet standing not fast they shall be shaken with the wind and through the force of winds they shall be rooted out 5 The unperfect branches shall be broken off their fruit unprofitable not ripe to eat yea meet for nothing 6 For children begotten of unlawful †Gr. sleeps beds are witnesses of wickedness against their parents in their trial 7 But though the righteous be prevented with death yet shall he be in rest 8 For honourable age is not that which standeth in length of time nor that is measured by number of years 9 But wisdom is the gray hair unto men and an unspotted life is old age 10 * Gen. 5.24 Heb. 11.5 He pleased God and was beloved of him so that living amongst sinners he was translated 11 Yea speedily was he taken away lest that wickedness should alter his
21.19 I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon then to keep house with a wicked woman 17 The wickedness of a woman changeth her face and darkeneth her countenance ‖ Or like a beaâ— like sackcloth 18 Her husband shall sit among his neighbours and when he heareth it shall sigh bitterly 19 All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman let the portion of a sinner fall upon her 20 As the climbing of a sandy way is to the feet of the aged so is a wife * Or scolding full of words to a quiet man 21 * 2 Sam. 11.2 Ch. 42 1â— Stumble not at the beauty of a woman and desire her not for pleasure 22 A woman if she maintain her husband is full of anger impudency and much reproach 23 A wicked woman abateth the courage maketh an heaviâ— countenance and a wounded heart a woman that will not comfort her husband in distress maketh weak hands and feeble knees 24 Of * Gen â— â— 1 Tim. 2.14 the woman came the beginning of sin and through her we all die 25 Give the water no passage neither a wicked woman liberty to gad abroad 26 If she go not as thou wouldest have her cut her off from thy flesh and give her a bill of divorce and let her go CHAP. XXVI 1 A good wife 4 and a good conscience do glad men 6 A wicked wife is a fearful thing 13 Of good and bad wives 28 Of three things that are grievous 29 Merehants and buksters are not without sin BLessed is the man that hath a vertuous wife for the number of his days shall be double 2 A vertuous woman rejoyceth her husband and he shall fulfil the years of his life in peace 3 A good wife is a good portion which shall be given in the portion of them that fear the Lord. 4 Whether a man be rich or poor if he have a good heart toward the Lord he shall at all times rejoyce with a cheerful countenance 5 There be three things that mine heart feareth and for the fourth I was sore afraid †Gr. an evil report the slander of a city the gathering together of an unruly multitude and a false accusation all these are worse then death 6 But a grief of heart sorrow is a woman that is jealous over another woman a scourge of the tongue which communicateth with all 7 An evil wife is ‖ Or a yoke of oâ—en a yoke shaken to and fro he that hath hold of her is as though he held a scorpion 8 A drunken woman and a gadder abroad causeth great anger and she will not cover her own shame 9 The whoredom of a woman may be known in her haughty looks and eye-lids 10 * Chap. 42.11 If thy daughter be shameless keep her in straitly lest she abuse herself through overmuch liberty 11 Watch over an impudent eye and marvel not if she trespass against thee 12 She will open her mouth as a thirsty traveller when he hath found a fountain and drink of every water near her by every ‖ Or stake hedge will she sit down and open her quiver against everâ— arrow 13 The grace of a wife delighteth her husband and her discretion will fat his bones 14 A silent and loving woman is a gift of the Lord and there is nothing so much worth as a minde well instructed 15 A shamefacâ—d and faithful woman is a double grace and her continent minde cannot be valued 16 As the sun when it ariseth †Gr. in the highest places of the Lord. in the high heaven so is the beauty of a good wife in the ‖ Or ornament ordering of her house 17 As the clear light is upon the holy candlestick so is the beauty of the face ‖ Or in constant age in ripe age 18 As the golden pillars are upon the sockets of silver so are the ‖ Or comely fair feet with a constant ‖ Or breast heart 19 My son keep the flower of thine age sound and give not thy strength to strangers 20 When thou hast gotten a fruitful possession through all the field sowe it with thine own seed trusting in the goodness of thy stock 21 So thy race which thou leavest shall be magnified having the confidence of their good descent 22 An harlot shall be accounted as ‖ Or a swinâ— spittle but a married woman is a towre against death to her husband 23 A wicked woman is given as a portion to a wicked man but a godly woman is given to him that feareth the Lord. 24 A dishonest woman contemneth shame but an honest woman will reverence her husband 25 A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog but she that is shamefac'd will fear the Lord. 26 A woman that honoureth her husband shall be judged wise of all but she that dishonoureth him in her pride-shall be counted ungodly of all 27 A loud-crying woman and a scold shall be sought out to drive away the enemies 28 There be two things that grieve my heart and the third maketh me angry a man of war that suffereth poverty and men of understanding that are not set by and one that returneth from righteousness to sin the Lord prepareth such an one for the sword 29 A merchant shall hardly keep himself from doing wrong and an huckster shall not be freed from sin CHAP. XXVII 1 Of sins in selling and buying 7 Our speech will tell what is in us 16 A friend is lest by discovering his secrets 25 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it MAny * Prov. 28.21 have sinned for ‖ Or a thing indifferent a small matter and he that * Pro. 23.4 1 Tim. 6.9 seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away 2 As a nail sticketh fast between the joynings of the stones so doth sin stick close between buying and selling 3 Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord his house shall soon be overthrown 4 As when one sifteth with a sieve the refuse remaineth so the filth of man in his ‖ Or thought talk 5 * Prov. 27.21 The furnace proveth the potters vessels so the trial of man is in his reasoning 6 * Mat. 7.17 The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man 7 Praise no man before thou hearest him speak for this is the trial of men 8 If thou followest righteousness thou shalt obtain her and put her on as a glorious long robe 9 The birds will resort unto their like so will truth return unto them that practise in her 10 As the lion lieth in wait for the prey so sin for them that work iniquity 11 The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom but a fool changeth as the moon 12 If thou be among the â—ndiscreet observe the time but be continually among men of
a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So
carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel who is in the lions den 35 And Habbacuc said Lord I never saw Babylon neither do I know where the den is 36 Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown and * Ezek. 8.3 bare him by the hair of his head and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den 37 And Habbacuc cried saying O Daniel Daniel * 1 Kin. 17.4 take the dinner which God hath sent thee 38 And Daniel said Thou hast remembred me O God neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee 39 So Daniel arose and did eat and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately 40 Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel and when he came to the den he looked in and behold Daniel was sitting 41 Then cried the king with a loud voice saying Great art thou O Lord God of Daniel and there is none other besides thee 42 * Jer. 37.17 And he drew him out and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den and they were devoured in a moment before his face ¶ The prayer of MANASSES king of Juda when he was holden captive in Babylon O Lord almighty God of our fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and of their righteous seed who hast made heaven and earth with all the ornament thereof who hast bound the sea by the word of thy commandment who hast shut up the deep and sealed it by thy terrible and glorious name whom all men fear and tremble before they power for the majesty of thy glory cannot be born and thine angry threatning towards sinners is importable but thy merciful promise is unmeasurable and unsearchable for thou art the most high Lord of great compassion long-suffering very merciful and repentest of the evils of men Thou O Lord according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee and of thine infinite mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners that they may be saved Thou therefore O Lord that art the God of the just hast not appointed repentance to the just as to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob which have not sinned against thee but thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea My transgressions O Lord are multiplied my transgressions are multiplied and I am not worthy to behold and see the height of heaven for the multitude of mine iniquity I am bowed down with many iron bands that I cannot lift up mine head ‖ Or neither take my breath neither have any release for I have provoked thy wrath and done evil before thee I did not thy will neither kept I thy commandments I have set up abominations and have multiplied offences Now therefore I bow the knee of mine heart beseeching thee of grace I have sinned O Lord I have sinned and I acknowledge mine iniquities wherefore I humbly beseech thee forgive me O Lord forgive me and destroy me not with mine iniquities Be not angry with me for ever by reserving evil for me neither condemn me into the lower parts of the earth For thou art the God even the God of them that repent and in me thou wilt shew all thy goodness for thou wilt save me that am unworthy according to thy great mercy Therefore I will praise thee for ever all the days of my life for all the powers of the heavens do praise thee and thine is the glory for ever and ever Amen ¶ The first book of the MACCABEES CHAP. I. 14 Antiochus gave leave to set up the fashions of the Gentiles in Jerusalem 22 and spoiled it and the temple in it 57 and set up therein the abomination of desolation 63 and slew those that did circumcise their children ANd it hapned after that Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian who came out of the land of ‖ Or Chetbiim Chettiim had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes that he reigned in his stead the first over Greece 2 And made many wars and wan many strong holds and slew the kings of the earth 3 And went through to the ends of the earth and took spoils of many nations insomuch that the earth was quiet before him whereupon ‖ Or his heart was exalted and lifted up he was exalted and his heart was lifted up 4 And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countreys and nations and ‖ Or kingdoms which became c. kings who became tributaries unto him 5 And after these things he fell sick and perceived †Gr. that he dieth that he should die 6 Wherefore he called his servants such as were honourable and had been brought up with him from his youth and parted his kingdom among them while he was yet alive 7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died 8 And his servants bare rule every one in his place 9 And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves so did their sons after them many years and evils were multiplied in the earth 10 And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes son of Antiochus the king who had been an hostage at Rome and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks 11 In those days went there out of Israel wicked men who perswaded many saying Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us for since we departed from them †Gr. many evils have found us we have had much sorrow 12 So this device pleased them well 13 Then certain of the people were so forward herein that they went to the king who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen 14 Whereupon they ‖ Or set up an open school at Jerusalem built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen 15 And made themselves uncircumcised and forsook the holy covenant and joyned themselves to the heathen and were sold to do mischief 16 Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms 17 Wherefore he entred into Egypt with a great multitude with chariots and elephants and hors-men and a great navy 18 And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt but Ptolemee was afraid of him and fled and many were wounded to death 19 Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof 20 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt he returned again in the hundred fourty and third year and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude 21 And entred proudly into the sanctuary and took away the golden altar and the candlestick of light and all the vessels thereof 22 And the table
and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place he gave them away 17 And so haughty was Antiochus in minde that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city and therefore his eye was not upon the place 18 For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins this man assoon as he had come had forthwith been scourged and put back from his presumption as Heliodorus was whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury 19 Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the places sake but the place for the peoples sake 20 And therefore the place it self that was partaker with them of the adversity that hapned to the nation did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty so again the great Lord being reconciled it was set up with all glory 21 So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents he departed in all haste unto Antiochia weening in his pride to make the land navigable and the sea passable by foot such was the haughtiness of his minde 22 And he left governours to vâ—x the nation at Jerusalem Philip for his countrey a Phrygian and for manners more barbarous then he that set him there 23 And at Garizim Andronicus and besides Menelaus who worse then all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens having a malicious minde against his countreymen the Jews 24 He sent also that detestable ring-leader Apollonius with an army of two twenty thousand commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age and to sell the women and the younger sort 25 Who coming to Jerusalem and pretending pâ—â—â—â— dâ—â—â—orbear till the holy-day of the sabbath when taking the Jews keeping holy-day he commanded his men to arm themselves 26 And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath and running through the city with weapons â—lâ—w great multitudes 27 But Judas Maccabeus †Gr who was the tenth with nine others or thereabout withdrew himself into the wilderness and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts with his company who fed on herbs continually lest they should be partakers of the pollution CHAP. VI. 1 The Jews are compelled to leave the law of God 4 The temple is defiled 8 Cruelty upon the people and the nomâ— 12 〈◊〉 exhorâ—â— ion 〈◊〉 bear affliction by the example of the valiaâ—â—â—ouâ—aâ—e of E. 〈◊〉 cruelly tâ—rtured NOt long after this the king sent an old man of ‖ Antioâ—b the Laune interpreters Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and not to live after the laws of God 2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius and that in Garizun of Jupiter the defender of strangers ‖ Out of Joseph 1.12 cap. 7. or as they werâ— as they did desire that dwelt in the place 3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people 4 For the temple was filled with not and revelling by the Gentiles who dallied with harlots and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places and besides that brought in things that were not lawful 5 The altar also was filled with profane things which the law forbiddeth 6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath-days or ancient feasts or to profess himself at all to be a Jew 7 And in the day of the kings birth every moneth they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices and when the feast of Bacchus was kept the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus carrying ivie 8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the †Gr Grecians heathen by the suggestion of Ptolemee against the Jews that they should observe the same fashions be partakers of their sacrifices 9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death Then might a man have seen the present misery 10 For there were two women brought who had circumcised their children whom when they had openly led round about the city the babes hanging at their breasts they cast them down headlong from the wall 11 And others that had run together into caves near by to keep the sabbath-day secretly being discovered to Philip were all burnt together because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day 12 Now I beseech those that read this book that they be not discouraged for these calamities but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction but for a chastning of our nation 13 For it is a token of his great goodness when wicked doers are not suffered any long time but forthwith punished 14 For not as with other nations whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish till they be come to the fulness of their sins so dealeth he with us 15 Lest that being come to the height of sin afterwards he should take vengeance of us 16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us And though he punish with adversity yet doth he never forsake his people 17 But let this that we have spoken be for a warning unto us And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in few words 18 Eleazar one of the principal scribes an aged man and of a well-savoured countenance was constrained to open his mouth and to eat swines flesh 19 But he choosing rather to die gloriously then to live stained with such an abomination spirit it forth and came of his own accord to the torment 20 As it behoved them to come that are resolute to stand out against such things as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted 21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast for the old acquaintance they had with the man taking him aside besought him to bring flesh of his own provision such as was lawful for him to use and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king 22 That in so doing he might he delivered from death and for the old friendship with them finde favour 23 But he began to consider discreetly and as became his age and the excellency of his ancient years and the honour of his gray head whereunto he was come and his most honest education from a childe or rather the holy law made and given by God therefore he answered accordingly and willed them straightways to send him to the grave 24 For it becometh not our age said he in any wise to dissemble whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar being fourscore years old and ten were now gone to a strange religion 25
15 And these are they by the way-side where the word is sown but when they have heard Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness 17 And have no root in themselves and so endure but for a time afterward when affliction or persecution ariseth for the words sake immediately they are offended 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns such as hear the word 19 And the cares of this world * 1 Tim. 6.17 and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entring in choke the word and it becometh unfruitful 20 And these are they which are sown on good ground such as hear the word and receive it and bring forth fruit some thirty-fold some sixty and some an hundred 21 ¶ * Matth. 5.5.15 And he said unto them Is a candle brought to be put under a ‖ The word in the original signifieth a less measure as Matth. 5.15 bushel or under a bed and not to be set on a candlestick 22 * Matth. 10.26 For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested neither was any thing kept secret but that it should come abroad 23 If any man have ears to hear let him hear 24 And he said unto them Take heed what you hear * Matth. 7.2 with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you and unto you that hear shall more be given 25 * Matth. 13.12 For he that hath to him shall be given and he that hath not from him shall be taken even that which he hath 26 ¶ And he said So is the kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground 27 And should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring and grow up he knoweth not how 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of her self first the blade then the ear after that the full corn in the ear 29 But when the fruit is ‖ Or ripe brought forth immediately he putteth in the sickle because the harvest is come 30 ¶ And he said * Matth. 13.31 Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God or with what comparison shall we compare it 31 It is like a grain of mustard-seed which when it is sown in the earth is less then all the seeds that be in the earth 32 But when it is sown it groweth up and becometh greater then all herbs and shooteth out great branches so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it 33 * Matth. 13.34 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them as they were able to hear it 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples 35 * Matth. 8. â—3 And the same day when the even was come he saith unto them Let us pass over unto the other side 36 And when they had sent away the multitude they took him even as he was in the ship and there were also with him other little ships 37 And there arose a great storm of wind and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake him and say unto him Master carest thou not that we perish 39 And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea Peace be still and the wind ceased and there was a great calm 40 And he said unto them Why are ye so fearful how is it that you have no faith 41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another What manner of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey him CHAP. V. 1 Christ delivering the possessed of the legion of devils 13 they enter into the swine 25 He healeth the woman of the bloudy issue 35 and raiseth from death Jairus his daughter ANd * Matth. 8.28 they came over unto the other side of the sea into the countrey of the Gadarenes 2 And when he was come out of the ship immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs and no man could binde him no not with chains 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains and the chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither could any man tame him 5 And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cuttâ—ng himself with stones 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off he ran and worshipped him 7 And cried with a loud voice and said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not 8 For he said unto him Come out of the man thou unclean spirit 9 And he asked him What is thy name And he answered saying My name is Legion for we are many 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the countrey 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding 12 And all the devils besought him saying Send us into the swine that we may enter into them 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave And the unclean spirits went out and entred into the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea 14 And they that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the countrey And they went out to see what it was that was done 15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 16 And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts 18 And when he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not but saith unto him Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion on thee 20 And he departed and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea 22 * Matth. 9.18 And behold there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet 23 And besought him greatly saying My little daughter lieth at the
point of death I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed and she shall live 24 And Jesus went with him and much people followed him and thronged him 25 And a certain woman which had an issue of bloud twelve years 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse 27 When she had heard of Jesus came in the preass behinde and touched his garment 28 For she said If I may touch but his clothes I shall be whole 29 And straightway the fountain of her bloud was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague 30 And Jesus immediately knowing in himself that vertue had gone out of him turned him about in the preass and said Who touched my clothes 31 And his disciples said unto him Thou seest the multitude thronging thee and sayest thou Who touched me 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing 33 But the woman fearing and trembling knowing what was done in her came and fell down before him and told him all the truth 34 And he said unto her Daughter thy saith hath made thee whole go in peace and be whole of thy plague 35 While he yet spake there came from the ruler of the synagogues house certain which said Thy daughter is dead why troublest â—â—ou the Master any further 36 Assoon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue Be not afraid onely beleeve 37 And he suffered no man to follow him save Peter and James and John the brother of James 38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and seeth the tumult and them that wept and wailed greatly 39 And when he was come in he saith unto them Why make ye this ado and weep the damsel is not dead but sleepeth 40 And they laughed him to scorn but when he had put them all out he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel and them that were with him and entreth in where the damsel was lying 41 And he took the damsel by the hand and said unto her Talitha cumi which is being interpreted Damsel I say unto thee arise 42 And straightway the damsel arose and walked for she was of the age of twelve years and they were astonished with a great astonishment 43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat CHAP. VI. 1 Christ is contemned of his countreymen 7 He giveth the twelve power over unclean spirits 14 Divers opinions of Christ 〈◊〉 John Baptist is beheaded 29 and buried 30 The apostles return from preaching 34 The miracle of five loaves and two fishes 48 Christ walketh on the sea 53 and bealeth all that touch him ANd * Matth. 13.54 he went out from thence and came into his own countrey and his disciples follow him 2 And when the sabbath-day was come he began to teach in the synagogue and many hearing him were aâ—tonished saying From whence hath this man these things and what wisdom is this which is given unto him that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands 3 Is not this the carpenter the son of Mary the brother of James and Joses and of Juda and Simon and are not his sisters here with us And they were offended at him 4 But Jesus said unto them * Joh. 4.44 A prophet is not without honour but in his own countrey and among his own kin and in his own house 5 And he could there do no mighty work save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them 6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief * Mat. 9.35 Luk. 13.22 And he went round about the villages teaching 7 ¶ * Mat. 10.1 And he calleth unto him the twelve and began to send them forth by two and two and gave them power over unclean spirits 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey save a staff onely no scrip no bread no ‖ The word signifieth 〈◊〉 piâ—â—â— of brast money in valâ—â— somewhat less then a farthing Mat. 10.9 but 〈◊〉 it is taken in general for money money in their purse 9 But be shod with sandals and not put on two coats 10 And he said unto them In what place soever ye enter into an house there abide till ye depart from that place 11 * Mat 10.14 And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear you when ye depart thence * Act. 13.51 shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them Verily I say unto you it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgement then for that city 12 And they went out and preached that men should repent 13 And they cast out many devils * Jam. 5.14 and anointed with oyl many that were sick and healed them 14 * Mat. 14.1 And king Herod heard of him for his name was spread abroad and he said that John the Baptist was risen from the dead and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him 15 Others said That it is Elias And others said That it is a prophet or as one of the prophets 16 * Luk. 3.19 But when Herod heard thereof he said It is John whom I beheaded he is risen from the dead 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias sake his brother Philips wife for he had married her 18 For John had said unto Herod * Lev. 18.16 It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife 19 Therefore Herodias had ‖ Or â—n inward grudge a quarrel against him and would have killed him but she could not 20 For Herod feared John knowing that he was a just man and an holy and ‖ Or kept â—im or saâ—ed â—im observed him and when he heard him he did many things and heard him gladly 21 And when a convenient day was come that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords high captains and chief estates of Galilee 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and them that sat with him the king said unto the damsel Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt and I will give it thee 23 And he sware unto her Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me I will give it thee unto the hall of my kingdom 24 And she went forth and said unto her mother What shall I ask And she said The head of John the Baptist 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king and asked saying I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist 26 And the king was exceeding sorry yet for his oaths sake and for their sakes
to place attended with his apostles propoundeth the parable of the sower 1â— and of the caudle 21 declareth who are his mother and brethren 12 rebuketh the winds 26 casteth the leâ—â—â—â— of devils out of the man into the 〈◊〉 of swene 37 is rejected of the Gadarens 43 healâ—th the woman of her blouâ—â—y issue 4â— and raiseth from death Jairus daughter ANd I came to pass afterward that he went throughout every city and village preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God and the twelve were with him 2 And certain women which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities Mary called Magdalene * Mar. 16.9 out of whom went seven devils 3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herods steward and Susanna and many others which ministred unto him of their substance 4 ¶ * Mat. 13.2 And when much people were gathered together and were come to him out of every city he spake by a parable 5 A sower went out to sowe his seed and as he sowed some fell by the way-side and it was troden down and the fowls of the air devoured it 6 And some tell upon a rock and assoon as it was sprung up it withered away because it lacked motiture 7 And some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it 8 And other fell on good ground and sprang up and bare fruit an hundred fold And when he had said these things he cried He that hath ears to hear let him hear 9 And his disciples asked him saying What might this parable be 10 And he said Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God but to others in parables that seeing they might not see and hearing they might not understand 11 * Matth. 3â— 18 Now the parable is this The seed is the word of God 12 These by the way-side are they that hear then cometh the devil and taketh away the word out of their hearts left they should beleeve and be saved 13 They on the rock are they which when they hear receive the word with joy and these have no root which for a while beleeve and in time of temptation fall away 14 And that which fell among thorns are they which when they have heard go forth and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this use and bring no fruit to perfection 15 But that on the good ground are they which in an honest and good heart having heard the word keep it and bring forth fruit with patience 16 ¶ * Mat. 8.15 No man when he hath lighted a candle covereth it with a vessel or putteth it under a bed but setteth it on a candlestick that they which enter in may see the light 17 * Mat. 10.26 For nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest neither any thing hid that shall not be known and come abroad 18 Take heed therefore how ye hear * Mat. 13.12 for whosoever hath to him shall be given and whosoever hath not from him shall be taken even that which he ‖ Or thinketh that be bate seemeth to have 19 ¶ * Mat. 12. â—6 Then came to him his mother and his brethren and could not come at him for the preass 20 And it was told him by certain which said Thy mother and thy brethren stand without desiring to see thee 21 And he answered and said unto them My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God and do it 22 ¶ * Mat. 8.23 Now it came to pass on a certain day that he went into a ship with his disciples and he said unto them Let us go over unto the other side of the lake And they laâ—ched forth 23 But as they sailed he fell asleep and there came down a storm of wind on the lake they were filled with water were in jeopardy 24 And they came to him and awoke him saying Master master we perish Then he arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water and they ceased and there was a calm 25 And he said unto them Where is your faith And they being afraid wondred saying one to another What manner of man is this for he commandeth even the winds and water and they obey him 26 ¶ * Ma 28. And they arrived at the countrey of the Gadarens which is over against Galilee 27 And when he went forth to land there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time and ware no clothes neither abode in any house but in the tombs 28 When he saw Jesus he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God most high I beseech thee torment me not 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man For oftentimes it had caught him and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters and he brake the bands and was driven of the devil into the wilderness 30 And Jesus asked him saying What is thy name And he said Legion because many devils were entred into him 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep 32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them And he suffered them 33 Then went the devils out of the man entred into the swine the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake were choked 34 When they that fed them saw what was done they fled and went and told it in the city and in the countrey 35 Then they went out to see what was done and came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed 37 ¶ Then the whole multitude of the countrey of the Gadarens round about besought him to depart from them for they were taken with great fear and he went up into the ship and returned back again 38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him but Jesus sent him away saying 39 Return to thine own house and shew how great things God hath done unto thee And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him 40 And it came to pass that when Jesus was returned the people gladly received him for they were all waiting for him 41 ¶ * Mat. 9.18 And behold there came a man named Jairus and he was a ruler of the synagogue and he fell down at Jesus feet and besought him that he would come into his house 42 For he had one onely daughter about twelve years
priests house And Peter followed afar off 55 * Matth. 26.69 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together Peter sat down among them 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said This man was also with him 57 And he denied him saying Woman I know him not 58 And after a little while another saw him and said Thou art also of them And Peter said Man I am not 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed saying Of a truth this fellox also was with him for he is a Galilean 60 And Peter said Man I know not what thou sayest And immediately while he yet spake the cock crew 61 And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter and Peter remembred the word of the Lord how he had said unto him Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice 62 And Peter went out and wept bitterly 63 ¶ And the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him 64 And when they had blindfolded him they stroke him on the face and asked him saying Prophesie who is it that smote thee 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him 66 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And assoon as it was day the elders of the people the chief priests and the scribes came together and led him into their council 67 Saying Art thou the Christ tell us And he said unto them If I tell you you will not beleeve 68 And it I also ask you you will not answer me nor let me go 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man tit on the right hand of the power of God 70 Then said they all Art thou then the Son of God And he said unto them * Mark 14. â—1 Ye say that I am 71 And they said What need we any further witness for we our selves have heard of his own mouth CHAP. XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fieâ— with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. â—1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. â—3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Isâ— 2.19 â—â—os 1â— 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a â—â—ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chriâ—t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of
hour so great riches is come to nought And every ship-master and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning saying What city is like unto this great city 19 And they cast duâ—t on their heads and cried weeping and wailing saying Alas alas that great city wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness for in one hour is she made desolate 20 Rejoyce over her thou heaven and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone and cast it into the sea saying Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all 22 And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee and no craftsman of whatsoever craft he be shall be sound any more in thee and the sound of a milstone shall be heard no more at all in thee 23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee for thy merchants were the great men of the earth for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived 24 And in her was found the bloud of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth CHAP. XIX 1 God is praised in heaven for judging the great whore and avenging the bloud of his saints 7 The marriage of the Lamb. 10 The angel will not be worshipped 17 The fowls called to the great slaughter ANd after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Alleluia Salvation and glory and honour and power unto the Lord our God 2 For true and righteous are his judgements for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth with her sâ—rnication and hath avenged the bloud of his servants at her hand 3 And again they said Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever 4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne saying Amen Alleluia 5 And a voice came out of the throne saying Praise our God all ye his servants and ye that fear him both small and great 6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters and as the voice of mighty thundrings saying Alleluia for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth 7 Let us be glad and rejoyce and give honour to him for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made her self ready 8 And to her was granted that she should be arayed in fine linen clean and white for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints 9 And he saith unto me Write * Mat. 22.2 Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me These are the true sayings of God 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him and he said unto me * Chap. 22 9. See thou do it not I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus worship God for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesie 11 And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true and in righteousness he doth judge and make war 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire and on his head were many crowns and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself 13 * Isa 63.2 And he was clothed with a vesture dipt in bloud and his name is called The Word of God 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses clothed in fine linen white and clean 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword that with it he should smite the nations and he shall rule them with a rod of iron and he treadeth the wine-press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written * Chap. 17.14 KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice saying to all the fowls that flie in the midst of heaven Come and gather your selves together unto the supper of the great God 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of captains and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of them that sit on them and the flesh of all men both free and bond both small and great 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse and against his army 20 And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that worshipped his image These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse which sword proceeded out of his mouth and all the fowls were filled with their flesh CHAP. XX. 2 Satan bound for a thousand years 5 The first resurrection 6 they blessed that have part therein 7 Satan let loose again 8 God and Magog 10 The devil cast into the lake of fire and brimstone 12 The last and general resurrection ANd I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand 2 And he laid hold on the dragon that old serpent which is the devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon him that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled and after that he must be loosed a little season 4 And I saw thrones and they sat upon them and judgement was given unto them and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God and which had not worshipped the beast neither his image neither had received his mark upon their forcheads or in their hands and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished This is the first resurrection 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection on such the second death hath no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years 7 And when the thousand years are expired Satan shall be loosed out of his prison 8
