lay_v down_o as_o a_o certain_a truth_n eccles_n 8.12_o 13._o though_o a_o sinner_n do_v evil_a a_o hundred_o time_n and_o his_o day_n be_v prolong_v yet_o sure_o i_o know_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v majesty_n on_o high_a he_o be_v the_o alone_a sacrifice_n that_o come_v proper_o in_o the_o room_n of_o elect_a sinner_n 2._o as_o there_o behove_v to_o be_v one_o to_o offer_v the_o sacrifice_n so_o as_o be_v content_a to_o be_v a_o sin-offering_a and_o the_o lord_n accept_v of_o he_o in_o the_o room_n of_o elect_a sinner_n this_o be_v well_o consider_v give_v to_o faith_n much_o clearness_n how_o to_o take_v he_o up_o when_o the_o soul_n honest_o aim_v to_o partake_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o suffering_n 2_o for_o clear_v this_o a_o little_a further_o we_o will_v know_v that_o there_o be_v as_o divine_n observe_v four_o or_o five_o way_n how_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v or_o how_o christ_n in_o procure_v by_o his_o death_n redemption_n peace_n and_o pardon_v to_o sinner_n be_v hold_v forth_o in_o scripture_n 1._o he_o purchase_v redemption_n and_o pardon_v of_o sin_n meritorious_o or_o he_o merit_v it_o by_o his_o death_n this_o respect_v the_o value_n of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o satisfaction_n so_o that_o if_o we_o consider_v christ_n in_o himself_o and_o the_o elect_a in_o themselves_o his_o death_n
have_v it_o more_o abundant_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v speak_v a_o word_n to_o for_o clear_v of_o the_o doctrine_n and_o then_o make_v use_v of_o it_o the_o 1._o be_v how_o this_o can_v be_v god_n design_n in_o christ_n humiliation_n to_o beget_v many_o son_n to_o life_n 2._o how_o christ_n death_n contribut_v to_o this_o design_n for_o the_o first_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o god_n design_n hâ—re_o we_o mean_v not_o his_o last_o and_o ultimat_fw-la design_n but_o his_o immediate_a design_n in_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o that_o his_o last_o and_o that_o thereby_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o justice_n may_v be_v manifest_v for_o the_o second_o which_o be_v how_o christ_n suffering_n contribute_v to_o this_o end_n it_o may_v be_v this_o then_o of_o many_o other_o duty_n by_o believer_n we_o will_v send_v a_o ear_n to_o a_o practical_a point_n of_o doctrine_n and_o will_v some_o way_n aim_n to_o mind_n it_o if_o we_o be_v bid_v pray_v we_o will_v pray_v if_o we_o be_v command_v to_o mortify_v sin_n we_o will_v endeavour_v it_o and_o so_o in_o other_o duty_n but_o who_o mind_v this_o as_o a_o duty_n when_o we_o be_v call_v of_o god_n to_o admire_v and_o praise_v his_o grace_n and_o love_n and_o humble_o to_o glory_n in_o he_o so_o as_o serious_o to_o set_v ourselves_o to_o fall_v about_o it_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v a_o most_o native_a proper_a and_o kind_o exercise_n for_o believer_n even_o like_o the_o work_n of_o those_o who_o say_v salvation_n to_o our_o god_n that_o sit_v upon_o the_o throne_n and_o unto_o the_o lamb_n rev._n 7.10_o to_o he_o who_o love_v we_o and_o wash_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n in_o his_o own_o blood_n etc._n etc._n rev._n 1.5_o to_o be_v take_v up_o with_o such_o sweet_a soliloquy_n in_o ourselves_o about_o this_o subject_a and_o with_o such_o song_n of_o praise_n to_o he_o who_o have_v give_v we_o so_o noble_a a_o be_v and_o life_n which_o be_v convoy_v to_o we_o by_o his_o blood_n be_v sure_a a_o suitable_a use_n of_o this_o point_n for_o if_o our_o life_n be_v of_o much_o worth_n he_o must_v be_v of_o infinite_o much_o more_o worth_a in_o himself_o and_o shall_v be_v so_o to_o we_o who_o purchase_v it_o at_o such_o a_o dear_a price_n the_o second_o use_v be_v to_o exhort_v you_o who_o we_o suppose_v to_o be_v renew_v as_o some_o of_o you_o now_o hear_v i_o be_v and_z o_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o aim_v at_o and_o endeavour_v to_o be_v reach_v we_o be_v useless_a in_o both_o and_o therefore_o two_o may_v we_o not_o expostulat_v with_o you_o that_o be_v hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n and_o yet_o continue_v stranger_n to_o christ_n that_o can_v hear_v of_o his_o suffering_n and_o of_o his_o have_v be_v in_o a_o agony_n for_o this_o very_a end_n that_o sinner_n may_v to_o any_o purpose_n we_o shall_v speak_v a_o word_n to_o two_o sort_n 1._o to_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n who_o be_v â—_z to_o the_o right_n usemaking_a of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o though_o you_o may_v think_v this_o to_o be_v a_o hard_a charge_n and_o can_v well_o endure_v to_o be_v expostulate_v with_o as_o unbeliever_n yet_o let_v i_o ask_v you_o 1._o do_v you_o think_v that_o all_o of_o you_o will_v go_v to_o heaven_n if_o not_o but_o that_o it_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o the_o most_o part_n of_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n will_v perish_v then_o sure_o all_o be_v not_o believer_n for_o all_o believer_n will_v go_v to_o heaven_n and_o not_o one_o of_o they_o shall_v perish_v and_o though_o you_o will_v not_o now_o believe_v this_o the_o day_n be_v come_v when_o you_o shall_v if_o grace_n prevent_v not_o see_v and_o find_v it_o when_o believer_n will_v be_v take_v in_o with_o christ_n and_o other_o shut_v out_o many_o of_o you_o may_v think_v that_o understanding_n to_o know_v good_a by_o ill_n yet_o when_o you_o be_v put_v to_o tell_v what_o it_o be_v you_o know_v not_o how_o to_o answer_v nor_o can_v you_o give_v the_o least_o satisfy_v account_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o you_o question_v not_o but_o it_o will_v be_v well_o with_o you_o and_o never_o once_o fear_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n and_o be_v that_o faith_n think_v you_o alace_o no_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a counterfeit_n and_o a_o very_a cheat_n other_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v we_o believe_v not_o always_o yet_o we_o believe_v sometime_o to_o wit_n when_o we_o do_v some_o duty_n and_o abstain_v from_o gross_a evil_n but_o when_o challenge_n come_v for_o the_o neglect_v of_o duty_n and_o for_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n we_o want_v it_o and_o have_v nothing_o of_o it_o and_o when_o death_n come_v such_o be_v force_v to_o say_v we_o fear_v we_o have_v be_v beguile_v ourselves_o whence_o come_v this_o but_o even_o from_o this_o ground_n that_o they_o will_v never_o suffer_v it_o to_o light_n but_o they_o have_v faith_n which_o yet_o will_v never_o be_v account_v to_o be_v faith_n because_o it_o have_v not_o christ_n righteousness_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o when_o any_o challenge_n be_v awaken_v it_o be_v a_o seek_v and_o quite_o go_v whereas_o true_a faith_n will_v in_o some_o measure_n stand_v it_o out_o against_o a_o challenge_n and_o will_v abide_v the_o trial_n of_o a_o challenge_n on_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n flee_v to_o 3._o we_o ask_v you_o this_o question_n be_v you_o sure_a of_o your_o faith_n you_o will_v say_v we_o hope_v so_o and_o believe_v so_o and_o this_o be_v all_o you_o can_v say_v which_o in_o effect_n come_v to_o this_o we_o groundless_o presume_v so_o and_o it_o be_v observable_a that_o if_o you_o be_v put_v to_o a_o second_o question_n what_o ground_n have_v you_o for_o your_o faith_n you_o have_v none_o at_o all_o if_o you_o be_v ask_v whether_o you_o be_v certain_a that_o you_o be_v believer_n you_o will_v answer_v no_o body_n be_v certain_a god_n know_v that_o be_v not_o this_o strange_a and_o have_v it_o not_o in_o it_o a_o utter_a inconsistancy_n that_o man_n and_o woman_n shall_v confident_o assert_v and_o maintain_v their_o faith_n and_o yet_o when_o they_o be_v put_v to_o prove_v it_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o they_o be_v uncertain_a and_o that_o none_o can_v be_v certain_a of_o it_o therefore_o think_v it_o not_o strange_a that_o we_o expostulat_v with_o you_o that_o you_o have_v be_v so_o long_o hear_v of_o christ_n and_o that_o yet_o you_o have_v little_a or_o rather_o no_o faith_n at_o all_o in_o the_o usemaking_a of_o his_o righteousness_n but_o to_o make_v this_o the_o more_o convince_o clear_a we_o shall_v give_v you_o four_o character_n whereby_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v try_v and_o know_v which_o will_v serve_v also_o to_o discover_v the_o unsoundness_n of_o the_o faith_n of_o many_o 1._o it_o may_v be_v try_v by_o the_o ground_n that_o it_o lean_v upon_o solid_a faith_n have_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o satisfaction_n his_o suffering_n the_o price_n that_o he_o pay_v to_o justice_n for_o sinner_n debt_n that_o he_o who_o know_v no_o sin_n may_v become_v sin_n for_o we_o as_o it_o be_v 2_o cor._n 5._o ult_n you_o that_o say_v you_o hope_v to_o come_v to_o heaven_n and_o will_v assert_v strong_o that_o you_o believe_v try_v it_o i_o beseech_v you_o by_o this_o what_o be_v it_o that_o warrant_n you_o to_o believe_v or_o whereon_o be_v your_o faith_n found_v be_v it_o christ_n righteousness_n that_o give_v your_o faith_n a_o ground_n you_o will_v say_v yes_o and_o who_o do_v otherways_o be_v there_o any_o but_o they_o expect_v life_n through_o christ_n but_o deceive_v not_o yourselves_o there_o be_v many_o that_o have_v some_o sort_n of_o respect_n to_o christ_n who_o do_v not_o at_o all_o right_o respect_v his_o suffering_n many_o will_v look_v upon_o christ_n as_o a_o sovereign_n and_o as_o one_o that_o can_v pardon_v they_o their_o sin_n and_o will_v pray_v to_o he_o for_o pardon_n of_o they_o who_o yet_o never_o serious_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o their_o obtain_n pardon_v on_o his_o death_n but_o expect_v pardon_v immediate_o without_o a_o interveen_a satisfaction_n yea_o they_o never_o look_v upon_o that_o as_o needful_a other_o again_o look_v only_o to_o christ_n ability_n to_o save_v and_o will_v pray_v to_o he_o as_o to_o a_o able_a saviour_n and_o here_o also_o by_o such_o his_o righteousness_n and_o merit_n be_v shut_v out_o as_o if_o it_o be_v superfluous_a and_o unnecessary_a a_o three_o sort_n look_v to_o his_o mercy_n and_o think_v that_o he_o be_v very_a kâ—nd_n and_o gracious_a and_o that_o as_o one_o man_n forgive_v another_o so_o will_v he_o forgive_v they_o and_o do_v not_o respect_n his_o righteousness_n nor_o find_v their_o faith_n and_o expectation_n of_o pardon_n upon_o he_o as_o upon_o one_o that_o have_v satisfy_v justice_n by_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n that_o pardon_n may_v come_v to_o they_o who_o come_v to_o he_o but_o where_o true_a faith_n be_v the_o soul_n begin_v the_o soul_n be_v content_a to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o thereupon_o it_o draw_v the_o conclusion_n anent_o pardon_n it_o have_v interveening_a betwixt_o the_o consideration_n of_o its_o gild_n and_o its_o application_n of_o pardon_n both_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n on_o god_n side_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o reconciliation_n on_o the_o sinner_n side_n which_o the_o soul_n do_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o undertake_n and_o perform_v of_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n it_o be_v also_o set_v down_o here_o he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v which_o in_o a_o word_n be_v this_o he_o shall_v see_v many_o who_o have_v perish_v if_o he_o have_v not_o suffer_v get_v good_a of_o his_o suffering_n and_o to_o be_v benefit_v by_o they_o who_o by_o his_o take_n on_o he_o the_o curse_n and_o by_o his_o undergo_n this_o soul_n travel_n shall_v be_v fir_v from_o the_o curse_n and_o make_v to_o partake_v of_o the_o benefit_n privilege_n and_o comfort_n that_o he_o have_v buy_v by_o so_o great_a and_o precious_a a_o price_n we_o propose_v this_o as_o the_o main_a doctrine_n from_o the_o word_n the_o last_o day_n that_o it_o be_v great_a satisfaction_n to_o our_o lord_n jesus_n to_o see_v sinner_n make_v use_n of_o and_o get_v good_a of_o hâ—s_n suffering_n or_o thus_o that_o sinner_n make_v use_n of_o christ_n suffering_n for_o their_o good_a be_v his_o satisfaction_n for_o all_o the_o soul-travel_n and_o suffering_n â—hat_n he_o endure_v he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v i_o shall_v insist_v no_o further_o in_o clear_v and_o confirm_v this_o but_o come_v close_o to_o the_o use_v of_o it_o and_o if_o any_o point_n of_o doctrine_n have_v use_v this_o may_v have_v and_o have_v it_o to_o the_o glading_n and_o make_v joyful_a and_o fain_o the_o heart_n of_o lose_a sinner_n that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n shall_v suffer_v so_o much_o and_o seek_v no_o more_o satisfaction_n â—or_a it_o all_o but_o to_o see_v sinner_n improve_n his_o suffering_n for_o their_o good_a to_o have_v a_o seed_n bring_v forth_o by_o his_o soul-travel_n and_o to_o have_v they_o get_v life_n by_o his_o death_n and_o the_o blessing_n by_o his_o bear_n of_o the_o curse_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v it_o that_o this_o doctrine_n bear_v forth_o we_o may_v draw_v the_o 1._o use_v to_o these_o four_o from_z and_o by_o which_o we_o may_v learn_v and_o know_v in_o some_o measure_n how_o to_o answer_v this_o question_n see_v we_o have_v hear_v so_o much_o of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o soul_n travel_v what_o shall_v we_o give_v to_o christ_n for_o all_o that_o how_o shall_v we_o satisfy_v he_o â—f_o there_o with_o re_fw-mi any_o affect_v suitable_o with_o thankfulness_n from_o the_o hear_n of_o christ_n be_v bring_v so_o low_a by_o his_o sad_a suffering_n this_o will_v be_v and_o can_v not_o but_o be_v their_o question_n hâ—re_o be_v a_o answer_n to_o it_o that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n seek_v no_o more_o as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o all_o his_o suffering_n but_o that_o you_o improve_v they_o for_o your_o good_a this_o will_v delight_n and_o satisfy_v he_o you_o can_v do_v he_o a_o great_a pleasure_n nothing_o will_v be_v â—ore_o acceptable_a nay_o nothing_o will_v be_v acceptable_a to_o he_o nor_o take_v off_o your_o hâ—nd_n but_o thiâ—_n even_o to_o see_v you_o come_v in_o to_o he_o and_o make_v use_n of_o his_o suffering_n for_o your_o own_o good_a that_o as_o to_o your_o particular_a his_o suffering_n may_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a and_o for_o nought_o but_o that_o you_o improve_v they_o and_o so_o improve_v they_o as_o you_o may_v not_o live_v and_o die_v in_o the_o case_n that_o you_o will_v have_v be_v in_o for_o ever_o have_v he_o not_o suffer_v that_o be_v under_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n under_o the_o wrath_n and_o curie_n of_o god_n in_o a_o anxious_a heartless_a life_n without_o god_n and_o without_o hope_n in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v even_o this_o in_o a_o word_n that_o hear_v of_o his_o sad_a suffering_n and_o of_o the_o design_n of_o they_o you_o may_v betake_v yourselves_o to_o he_o for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n for_o sanctification_n in_o both_o the_o part_n of_o it_o and_o for_o consolation_n and_o that_o in_o the_o end_n you_o may_v get_v your_o soul_n â—aved_v on_o the_o account_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o by_o virtue_n thereof_o 1._o then_o you_o will_v seek_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n 2_o cor._n 5.20_o 21._o exhort_v we_o as_o ambassador_n for_o â—hrist_n and_o in_o his_o stead_n beseech_v you_o to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o the_o argument_n whereby_o it_o be_v press_v be_v the_o same_o that_o the_o doctrine_n hold_v forth_o for_o he_o be_v make_v sin_n for_o we_o who_o know_v no_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o he_o hence_o it_o follow_v also_o chap._n 6.1_o we_o beseech_v you_o receive_v not_o this_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a be_v there_o â—ny_o of_o you_o who_o be_v convince_v that_o christ_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o that_o he_o fruit_n of_o they_o may_v follow_v and_o be_v find_v in_o you_o that_o consider_v the_o woeful_a case_n you_o be_v in_o by_o nature_n you_o may_v make_v use_n of_o his_o satisfaction_n to_o divine_a justice_n as_o as_o the_o alone_a atonement_n and_o may_v by_o faith_n take_v hold_v of_o it_o as_o the_o ground_n of_o your_o peace_n if_o this_o be_v not_o câ—rist_n will_v be_v to_o you_o as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o suffer_v 2_o it_o call_v for_o holiness_n and_o mortification_n of_o sin_n this_o be_v much_o press_v rom._n 6._o from_o v._o 2_o to_o 14._o and_o by_o this_o same_o argument_n to_o wit_n that_o see_v christ_n die_v for_o believer_n we_o shall_v die_v with_o he_o that_o be_v it_o wherein_o the_o power_n of_o his_o death_n kythe_n even_o in_o the_o mortification_n of_o our_o lust_n which_o he_o come_v to_o destroy_v but_o when_o folk_n live_v as_o they_o have_v wont_a to_o do_v in_o their_o profanity_n and_o looseness_n thâ—re_o be_v nothing_o of_o the_o fruit_n of_o
