a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So

Azazâ—l scape-goat 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORDS lot †Heb. went up fell and offer him for a sin-offering 10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scape-goat shall be presented alive before the LORD to make an atonement with him and to let him go for a scape-goat into the wilderness 11 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself and shall make an atonement for himself and for his house and shall kill the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself 12 And he shall take a censer-full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small and bring it within the vail 13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy-seat that is upon the testimony that he die not 14 And * Hebr. â— 13 10.4 he shall take of the bloud of the bullock and * Cha. 4. â— sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat east-ward and before the mercy-seat shall he sprinkle of the bloud with his finger seven times 15 ¶ Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring his bloud within the vail and do with that bloud as he did with the bloud of the bullock and sprinkle it upon the mercy-seat and before the mercy seat 16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and because of their transgressions in all their sins and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation that †Heb. dwelleth remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness 17 * Luk. 1 1â— And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place until he come out and have made an atonement for himself and for his houshold and for all the congregation of Israel 18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD and make an atonement for it and shall take of the bloud of the bullock of the bloud of the goat put it upon the horns of the altar round about 19 And he shall sprinkle of the bloud upon it with his finger seven times and cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel

therefore wrote this song the same day and taught it the children of Israel 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge and said * Jos 1.6 Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them and I will be with thee 24 ¶ And it came to pass when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book until they were finished 25 That Moses commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD saying 26 Take this book of the law and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God that it may be there for a witness against thee 27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck behold while I am yet alive with you this day ye have been rebellious against the LORD and how much more after my death 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to record against them 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt your selves and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you and evil will befal you in the latter days because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song until they were ended CHAP. for he will not say thee nay that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife 18 And Bath-sheba said Well I will speak for thee unto the king 19 ¶ Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon to speak unto him for Adonijah and the king rose up to meet her and bowed himself unto her and sat down on his throne and caused a seat to be set for the kings mother and she sat on his right hand 20 Then she said I desire one small petition of thee I pray thee say me not nay And the king said unto her Ask on my mother for I will not say thee nay 21 And she said Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife 22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah ask for him the kingdom also for he is mine elder brother even for him and for Abiathar the priest and for Joab the son of Zeruiah 23 Then king Solomon sware by the LORD saying God do so to me and more also if Adonijah have not spoken this word agaist his own life 24 Now therefore as the LORD liveth which hath established me and set me on the throne of David my father and who hath made me an house as he * 2 Sam. 7.12 13. promised Adonijah shall be put to death this day 25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and he fell upon him that he died 26 ¶ And unto Abiathar the priest said the king Get thee to Anathoth unto thine been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted 27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD that he might * 1 Sam. 2.31 35. fulfil the word of the LORD which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh 28 ¶ Then tidings came to Joab for Joab had turned after Adonijah though he turned not after Absalom and Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD and caught hold on the horns of the altar 29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD and behold he is by the altar then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada saying Go fall upon him 30 And Benaiah came to the rabernacle of the LORD and said unto him Thus saith the king Come forth And he said Nay but I will die here And Benaiah brought the king word again saying Thus said Joab and thus he answered me 31 And the king said unto him Do as he hath said and fall upon him and bury him that thou mayest take away the innocent bloud which Joab shed from me and from the house of my father 32 And the LORD shall return his bloud upon his own head who fell upon two men more righteous and better then he and slew them with the sword my father David not knowing thereof to wit * 2 Sam. 3.27 Abner the son of Ner captain of the host of Israel and * 2 Sam. 2â— 10 Amasa the son of Jether captain of the host of Judah 33 Their bloud shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his seed for ever but upon David and upon his seed and upon his house and upon his throne shall there be peace for ever from the LORD 34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and fell upon him and slew him and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness 35 ¶ And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar 36 ¶ And the king sent and called for Shimei and said unto him Build thee an house in Jerusalem and dwell there and go not forth thence any whither 37 For it shall be that on the day thou goest out and passest over the brook Kidron thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die thy bloud shall be upon thine own head 38 And Shimei said unto the king The saying is good as my lord the king hath said so will thy servant do And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days 39 And it came to pass at the end of three years that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath and they told Shimei saving Behold thy servants he in Gath. 40 And Shimei arose and saddled his ass and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants and Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. 41 And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and was come again 42 And the king sent and called for Shimei and said unto him Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD and protested unto thee saying Know for a certain that on the day thou goest out and walkest abroad any whither that thou shalt surely die and thou saidst unto me The word that I have heard is good 43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD and the commandment that I have charged thee with 44 The king said moreover to Shimei Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to that thou didst to David my father therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head 45 And king Solomon shall be blessed and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever 46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada which went out and fell upon him that he died and the * 2 Chr. 1.1 kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon CHAP. III. 1 Solomon marrieth Pharaohs daughter 2 High places being in use Solomon sacrificeth at Gibeon 5 Solomon at Gibeon in the choice which God gave him preferring wasdom obtaineth wisdom riches and honour 16 Solomons judgement between the two harlots maketh
a great feast unto all his princes and his servants even Esthers feast and he made a †Heb. rest release to the provinces and gave gifts according to the state of the king 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time then Mordecai sat in the kings gate 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people as Mordecai had charged her for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai like as when she was brought up with him 21 ¶ In those days while Mordecai sat in the kings gate two of the kings chamberlains ‖ Or Bigthana ch 6.2 Bigthan and Teresh of those which kept †Heb. the threshold the door were wroth and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai who told it unto Esther the queen and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter it was found out therefore they were both hanged on a tree and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king CHAP. III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live
up their eyes afar off and knew him not they sified up their voice and wept and they rent every one his mantle and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven 13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights and none spake a word unto him for they saw that his grief was very great CHAP. III. 1 Job curseth the day and services of his birth 13 The ease of death 20 He complaineth of life because of his anguish AFter this opened Job his mouth and cursed his day 2 And Job ‡ Heb. answered snake and said 3 * Chap. 10.18.19 Jer. 10.14 Let the day perish wherein I was born and the night in which it was said There is a man childe conceived 4 Let that day be darkness let not God regard it from above neither let the light shine upon it 5 Let darkness and the shadow of death ‖ Or challenge it stain it let a cloud dwell upon it ‖ Or let them terrifie it as those who have a bitter day let the blackness of the day terrifie it 6 As for that night set it darkness seise upon it ‖ Or let it not rejoyce among the days let it not be joyned unto the days of the year let it not come into the number of the moneths 7 Lo let that night be solitary let no joyful voice come therein 8 Let them curse it that curse the day who are ready to raise up ‖ Or a leviathan their mourning 9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark let it look for light but have none neither let it see †Heb the eye-lids of the morning the dawning of the day 10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mothers womb nor hid sorrow from mine eyes 11 Why died I not from the womb why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly 12 Why did the knees prevent me or why the breasts that I should suck 13 For now should I have lien still and been quiet I should have slept then had I been at rest 14 With kings and counsellours of the earth which built desolate places for themselves 15 Or with princes that had gold who filled their houses with silver 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been as infants which never saw light 17 There the wicked cease from troubling and there the †Heb. wearied in strength weary be at rest 18 There the prisoners rest together they hear not the voice of the oppressour 19 The small and great are there and the servant is free from his master 20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery and life unto the bitter in soul 21 Which †Heb. wait long for death but it cometh not and dig for it more then for hid treasures 22 Which rejoyce exceedingly and are glad when they can finde the grave 23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid * Ch. 19.8 and whom God hath hedged in 24 For my sighing cometh †Heb. before my meat before I eat and my roarings are poured out like the waters 25 For †Heb. I feared a fear and it came upon me the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me and that which I was afraid of is come unto me 26 I was not in safety neither had I rest neither was I quiet yet trouble came CHAP. IV. 1 Eliphaz reproveth Job for want of religion 7 He teacheth Gods judgements to be not for the righteous but for the wicked 12 His fearful vision to humble the excellencies of treatures before God THen Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said 2 If we assay †Heb. a word to commune with thee wilt thou be grieved but †Heb. who can refrain from words who can withhold himself from speaking 3 Behold thou half instructed many and thou hast strengthned the weak hands 4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling and thou hast strengthned †Heb. the bowing knees the feeble knees 5 But now it is come upon thee and thou faintest it toucheth thee and thou art troubled 6 Is not this thy fear thy confidence thy hope and the uprightness of thy ways 7 Remember I pray thee who ever perished being innocent or where were the righteous cut off 8 Even as I have seen * Prov. 22.8 Hos 10.13 they that plow iniquity and sowe wickedness reap the same 9 By the blast of God they perish and ‖ That is by his anger as Isa 30.33 by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed 10 The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion and the teeth of the young lions are broken 11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey and the stout lions whelps are scattered abroad 12 Now a thing was †Heb. by stealth secretly brought to me and mine ear received a little thereof 13 In thoughts from the visions of the night when deep sleep falleth on men 14 Fear †Heb. meâ— me came upon me and trembling which made †Heb. the multitude of my bones all my bones to shake 15 Then a spirit passed before my face the hair of my flesh stood up 16 It stood still but I could not discern the form thereof an image was before mine eyes ‖ Or I heard a still voice there was silence and I heard a voice saying 17 Shall mortal man be more just then God shall a man be more pure then his maker 18 Behold he * Ch. 15.15 2 Pet. 2.4 put no trust in his servants ‖ Or not in his angels in whom be piâ—â— liâ—ht and his angels he charged with folly 19 How much less on them that dwell in * 2 Cor. 5.1 houses of clay whose foundation is in the dust which are crushed before the moth 20 They are †Heb. beaten in pieces destroyed from morning to evening they perish for ever without any regarding it 21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away they die even without wisdom CHAP. V. 1 The harm of inconsideration 3 The end of the wicked is misery 6 God is to be regarded in affliction 17 The happy end of Gods correction CAll now if there be any that will answer thee and to which of the saints wilt thou ‖ Or look turn 2 For wrath killeth the foolish man and ‖ Or inaignation envy stayeth the silly one 3 I have seen the foolish taking root but suddenly I cursed his habitation 4 His children are far from safety and they are crushed in the gate neither is there any to deliver them 5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up and taketh it even out of the thorns and the robber swalloweth up their substance 6 Although ‖ Or iniquity affliction cometh not forth of the dust neither doth trouble spring out of the ground 7 Yet man is born unto ‖
yet would I not know my soul I would despise my life 22 This is one thing therefore I said it he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked 23 If the scourge slay suddenly he will laugh at the trial of the innocent 24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked he covereth the â—â—ces of the judges thereof if not where and who is he 25 Now my days are swifter then a post they flee away they see no good 26 They are passed away as the †Heb. ships of desire ‖ Or ships of Ebeh swift ships as the eagle that hâ—â—teth to the prey 27 If I say I will forget my complaint I will leave off my heaviness and comfoâ—t my self 28 I am afraid of all my sorrows I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent 29 If I be wicked why then labour I in vain 30 If I wash my self with snow-water and make my hands never so clean 31 Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch and mine own clothes shall ‖ Or make me to be abhâ—rred abhor me 32 For he is not a man as I am that I should answer him and we should come together in judgement 33 Neither is there †Heb. one that should argue any ‖ Or â—mpire days man betwixt us that might lay his hand upon us both 34 Let him take his rod away from me let not his fear terrifie me 35 Then would I speak and not fear him †Heb. but I am not so with my self but it is not so with me CHAP. X. 1 Job taking liberty of complaint expostulateth with God about his afflictions IS He complaineth of life and craveth a little ease before death MY soul is ‖ Or cut off while I live weary of my life I will leave my complaint upon my self I will speak in the bitterness of my soul 2 I will say unto God Do not condemn me shew me wherefore thou contendest with me 3 Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress that thou shouldest despise †Heb. the labour of thine hands the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked 4 Hast thou eyes of flesh or seest thou as man seeth 5 Are thy days as the days of man are thy years as mans days 6 That thou enquirest after mine iniquity and searchest after my sin 7 †Heb. It is upon thy knowledge Thou knowest that I am not wicked and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand 8 Thine hands †Heb. took pains about have made me and fashioned me together round about yet thou dost destroy me 9 Remember I beseech thee that thou hast made me as the clay and wilt thou bring me into dust again 10 * Psal 139.14 15 16. Hast thou not poured me out as milk and cruddled me like cheese 11 Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh and hast †Heb. bedged fenced me with bones and sinews 12 Thou hast granted me life and favour and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit 13 And these things hast thou hid in thine heart I know that this is with thee 14 If I sin then thou markest me and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity 15 If I be wicked we unto me and if I be righteous yet will I not lift up my head I am full of contusion therefore see thou mine affliction 16 For it increaseth thou huntest me as a fierce lion and again thou shewest thy self marvellous upon me 17 Thou renewest ‖ That is thy plagues thy witnesses against me and increasest thine indignation upon me changes and war are against me 18 * Ch. 3.11 Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb Oh that I had given up the ghost and no eye had seen me 19 I should have been as though I had not been I should have been carried from the womb to the grave 20 * See chap. 7.6 and 8.9 Are not my days few cease then and let me alone that I may take comfort a little 21 Before I go whence I shall not return even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death 22 A land of darkness as darkness it self and of the shadow of death without any order and where the sight is as darkness CHAP. XI 1 Zophar reproveth Job for justifying himself 5 Gods wisdom is unsearchable 13 The assured blessing of repentance THen answered Zophar the Naamathite and said 2 Should not the multitude of words be answered and should †Heb. a man of lips a man full of talk he justified 3 Should thy ‖ Or devices lies make men hold their peace and when thou mockest shall no man make thee ashamâ—d 4 For thou hast said My doâ—â—rine is pure and I am clean in thine eyes 5 But O that God would speak and open his lips against thee 6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom that they are double to that which is know therefore that God exacteth of thee less then thine iniquity deserveth 7 Canst thou by searching finde out God canst thou finde out the Almighty unto perfection 8 It is †Heb. the brights of heaven as high as heaven what canst thou do deeper then hell what canst thou know 9 The measure thereof is longer then the earth and broader then the sea 10 If he ‖ Or make a change cut off and shut up or gather together then †Heb. who can turn him away who can hinder him 11 For he knoweth vain men he seeth wickedness also will he not then consider it 12 For †Heb. empty vain man would be wise though man be born like a wilde asses colt 13 If thou prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands towards him 14 If iniquity he in thine hand put it far away and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles 15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot yea thou shalt be stedfast and shalt not fear 16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that pass away 17 And thine age †Heb. shall arise above the more day shall be clearer then the noon-day thou shalt shine forth thou shalt be as the morning 18 And thou shalt be secure because there is hope yea thou shalt dig about thee and * Lev. 26.5 thou shalt take thy rest in safety 19 Also thou shalt lie down and none shall make thee afraid yea many shall †Heb. intreat thy face make suit unto thee 20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail and †Heb. flight shall perish from them they shall not escape and * Ch. 8.14 and 18.14 their hope shall be as ‖ Or a toss of breath the giving up of the ghost CHAP. XII 1 Job maintaineth himself against his friends that reprove him 7 He acknowledgeth the general doctrine of Gods omnipotâ—ncy ANd Job answered and said 2 No
rosteth not that which he took in hunting but the substance of a diligent man is precious 28 In the way of righteousness is life and in the path-way thereof there is no death CHAP. XIII A Wise son heareth his fathers instruction but a scorner heareth not rebuke 2 * Chap. 12.14 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth but the soul of the transgressours shall eat violence 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction 4 The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat 5 A righteous man hateth lying but a wicked man is loathsom and cometh to shame 6 * Chap. 11.3 5 6. A true witness delivereth souls but a deceitful witness speaketh lies 26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence and his children shall have a place of refuge 27 * Chap. 13.14 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life to depart from the snares of death 28 In the multitude of people is the kings honour but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince 29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding but he that is †Heb. short of spirit hasty of spirit exalteth folly 30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh but envy the rostenness of the bones 31 * Chap. 17.5 Matt. 25.40 45. He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his maker but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor 32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness but the righteous hath hope in his death 33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding but that which is in the midst of fools is made known 34 Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach †Heb. to nations to any people 35 The kings favour is toward a wise servant but his wrath is against him that causeth shame CHAP. XI 1 Directions for charity 7 Death in life 9 and the day of judgement in the days of youth are to be thought on CAst thy bread †Heb. upon the face of the waters upon the waters for thou shalt finde it after * Deu. 15.10 Pr. 19.17 Mat. 10.42 many days 2 Give a portion to seven and also to eight for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth 3 If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth and if the tree fall toward the south or toward the north in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sowe and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with childe even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all 6 In the morning sowe thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether †Heb. shall be right shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good 7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun 8 But if a man live many years and rejoyce in them all yet let him remember the days of darkness for they shall be many All that cometh is vanity 9 ¶ Rejoyce O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thy heart and in the sight of thine eyes but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement 10 Therefore remove ‖ Or anger sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh for childhood and youth are vanity CHAP. XII 1 The Creatour is to be remembred in due time 8 The preachers care to edifie 13 The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity * Pr. 22.6 REmember now thy Creatour in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them 2 While the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkned not the clouds return after the rain 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and ‖ Or the grinders fail because they grinde little the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows be darkned 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets when the sound of the grinding is low and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of musick shall be brought sow 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high and fears shall be in the way and the almond-tree shall flourish and the grashopper shall be a burden and desire shall fail because man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets 6 Or ever the â—ilver cord be loosed or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern 7 * Gen. 3.19 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it 8 ¶ * Ch. 1.2 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher all is vanity 9 And ‖ Or the more wise the preacher was c. moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yea he gave good heed and sought out and * 1 Kin. 4.32 set in order many proverbs 10 The preacher sought to finde out †Heb. words of delight acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth 11 The words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastned by the masters of assemblies which are given from one shepherd 12 And further by these my son be admonished of making many books there is no end and much ‖ Or reading study is a weariness of the flesh 13 ¶ ‖ Or The end of the matter even all that hath-been heard is Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man 14 For * Ro. 2.16 14.20 2 Cor. â— 10 God shall bring every work into judgement with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil ¶ The SONG of SOLOMON CHAP. XIII 1 In the â—â—pe of a lineâ— girdle kidden at Euphrates God prefigureth the destruction of his people 12Vnder the parable of the bottles filled with wine he foretelleth their drunkenness in misery 15 He exhorteth to prevent their future judgements 22 He sheweth their abominations are the cause thereof THus saith the LORD unto me Go and get thee a linen girdle and put it upon thy loyns and put it not in water 2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD and put it on my loyns 3 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time saying 4 Take the girdle that thou hast got which is upon thy loyns and arise go to Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock 5 So I went and hid it by Euphrates as the LORD commanded me 6 And it came to pass after many days that the LORD said unto me Arise go to Euphrates and take the girdle from thence which I commanded thee to hide there 7 Then I went to Euphrates and digged and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it and behold the girdle was marred it was profitable for nothing 8 Then the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 Thus saith the LORD After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem 10 This evil people which refuse to hear my words which walk in the ‖ Or stubb â—nness imagination of their heart and walk after other gods to serve them and to worship them shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing 11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loyns of a man so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah saith the LORD that they might be unto me for a people for a name and for a praise for a glory but they would not hear 12 ¶ Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Every bottle shall be filled with wine and they shall say unto thee Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine 13 Then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land even the kings that sit upon Davids throne and the priests and the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with drunkenness 14 And I will dash them †Heb. a man against his brother one against another even the fathers and the sons together saith the LORD I will not pity nor spare not have mercy †Heb. from destroying them but destroy them 15 ¶ Hear ye and give ear be not proud for the LORD hath spoken 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he cause * If. 8.22 darkness and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains and while ye look for light he turn it into the shadow of death and make it gross darkness 17 But if ye will not hear it my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride and * La. 1.2 16 and 2.18 mine eye shall weep sore and run down with tears because the LORDs flock is carried away captive 18 Say unto the king and to the queen Humble your selves sit down for your ‖ Or head-tires principalities shall come down even the crown of your glory 19 The cities of the south shall be shut up and none shall open them Judah shall be carried away captive all of it it shall be wholly carried away captive 20 Lift up your eyes and behold them that come from the north where is the flock that was given thee thy beautiful flock 21 What wilt thou say when he shall †Heb. visit upon punish thee for thou hast taught them to be captains and as chief over thee shall not sorrows take thee as a woman in travail 22 ¶ And it thou say in thine heart * Ch 5.19 and 16.10 Wherefore come these things upon me for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered and thy heels ‖ Or shall be violently taken away made bare 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots then may ye also do good that are †Heb. caught accustomed to do evil 24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness 25 This is thy lot the portion of thy measures from me saith the LORD because thou hast forgotten me and trusted in falshood 26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face that thy shame may appear 27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings the lewdness of thy whoredom and thine abominations on the hills in the fields wo unto thee O Jerusalem wilt thou not be made clean †Heb. after when â—et when shall it once be CHAP. XIV 1 The grievous famine 7 causeth Jeremiah to pray 10 The Lord will not be intreated for the people 13 Lying prophets are no excuse for them 17 Jeremiah is moved to complain for them THe word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning †Heb. the words of the dearths or restraints the dearth 2 Judah mourneth and the gates thereof languish they are black unto the ground and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters they came to the pits and found no water they returned with their vessels empty they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads 4 Because the ground is chapt for there was no rain in the earth the plowmen were ashamed they covered their heads 5 Yea the hind also calved in the field and forsook it because there was no grass 6 And the wilde asses did stand in the high places they snuffed up the wind
upon all the inhabitants of the earth saith the LORD of hosts 30 Therefore prophesie thou against them all these words and say unto them The LORD shall * Joel 3.16 Alli 1.2 roar from on high and utter his voice from his holy habitation he shall mightily roar upon his habitation he shall give a shout as they that tread the grapes against all the inhabitants of the earth 31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth for the LORD hath a controversie with the nations he will plead with all flesh he will give them that are wicked to the sword saith the LORD 32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold evil shall go forth from nation to nation and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth 33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth they shall not be * Ch. 16.4 lamented neither gathered nor buried they shall be dung upon the ground 34 ¶ * Ch. 4.8 6.25 Howl ye shepherds and cry and wallow your selves in the ashes ye principal of the flock for †Heb. your days for slaughter the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished and ye shall fall like †Heb. a vessil of desire a pleasant vessel 35 And †Heb. flight shall perish from the shepherds and â—scapint from c. the shepherds shall have no way to flee nor the principal of the flock to escape 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds and an howling of the principal of the flock shall be heard for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture 37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD 38 He hath forsaken his covert as the lion for their land is †Heb. 〈◊〉 desolation desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressour and because of his fierce anger CHAP. XXVI 1 Jeremiah by promises and threatnings exhorteth to repentants 8 He is therefore apprehended 10 and arraigned 11 His apology 16 He is quit in judgement by the example of Miâ—ah 20 and of Vrijah 24 and by the care of Ahikans IN the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD saying 2 Thus saith the LORD Stand in the court of the LORDS house and speak unto all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the LORDS house all the words that I command thee to speak unto them * Act. â—0 27 diminish not a word 3 If so be they will hearken and turn every man from his evil way that I may * Ch. 18.8 repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings 4 And thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD If ye will not hearken to me to walk in my law which I have set before you 5 To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets whom I sent unto you both rising up early and sending them but ye have not hearkned 6 Then will I make this house like * 1 Sa. 4.12 Ps 78.60 Ch. 7.12 14 Shiloh and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth 7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD 8 ¶ Now it came to pass when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him saying Thou shalt surely die 9 Why halt thou prophesied in the name of the LORD saying This house shall be like Shiloh and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant and all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD 10 ¶ When the princes of Judah heard these things then they came up from the kings house unto the house of the LORD and sat down ‖ Or at the door in the entry of the new gate of the LORDS house 11 Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people saying †Heb. The judgement of death is for this man This man is worthy to die for he hath prophesied against this city as ye have heard with your ears 12 ¶ Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people saying The LORD sent me to prophesie against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard 13 Therefore now * Ch. 7.3 amend your ways and your doings and obey the voice of the LORD your God and the LORD will * Ver. 19. repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you 14 As for me behold I am in your hand do with me †Heb. as it is good and right in your eyes as seemeth good and meet unto you 15 But know ye for certain that if ye put me to death ye shall surely bring innocent bloud upon your selves and upon this city and upon the inhabitants thereof for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears 16 ¶ Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets This man is not worthy to die for he hath spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God 17 Then rose up certain of the elders of the land and spake to all the assembly of the people saying 18 * Mic. 1.1 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spake to all the people of Judah saying Thus saith the LORD of hosts * Mic. 3.12 Zion shall be plowed like a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest 19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death did he not fear the LORD and besought †Heb. the face of the LORD the LORD and the LORD repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them Thus might we procure great evil against our souls 20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah 21 And when Jehoiakim the king with all his mighty men and all the princes heard his words the king sought to put him to death but when Urijah heard it he was afraid and fled and went into Egypt 22 And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt namely Elnathan the son of Achbor and certain men with him into Egypt 23 And they fet forth Urijah out of Egypt and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king who slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the â€
well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God 7 ¶ And it came to pass after ten days that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah 8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces which were with him and all the people from the least even to the greatest 9 And said unto them Thus saith the LORD the God of Israel unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him 10 It ye will still abide in this land then will I build you and not pull you down and I will plant you and not pluck you up for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you 11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon of whom ye are afraid be not afraid of him saith the LORD for I am with you to save you and to deliver you from his hand 12 An I will shew mercies unto you that he may have mercy upon you and cause you to return to your own land 13 ¶ But if ye say We will not dwell in this land neither obey the voice of the LORD your God 14 Saying No but we will go into the land of Egypt where we shall see no war nor hear the sound of the trumpet nor have hunger of bread and there will we dwell 15 And now therefore hear the word of the LORD ye remnant of Judah Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt and go to sojourn there 16 Then it shall come to pass that the sword which ye feared shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt and the famine whereof ye were afraid †Heb. shall cleave after you shall follow close after you there in Egypt and there ye shall die 17 †Heb. sâ— shall all the men be So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there they shall die by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence and none of them shall remain nor escape from the evil that I will bring upon them 18 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem so shall my fury be poured forth upon you when ye shall enter into Egypt and ye shall be an execration and an astonishment and a curse and a reproach and ye shall see this place no more 19 ¶ The LORD hath said concerning you O ye remnant of Judah Go ye not into Egypt know certainly that I have †Heb. testified against you admonished you this day 20 For ‖ Or you have used deceit against your souls ye dissembled in your hearts when ye sent me unto the LORD your God saying Pray for us unto the LORD our God and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say so declare unto us and we will do it 21 And now I have this day declared it to you but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you 22 Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence in the place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn CHAP. XLIII 1 Johanan discrediting Jeremiahs prophesie carrieth Jeremiah and others into Egypt 8 Jeremiah prophesieth by a type the conquest of Egypt by the Babylonians ANd it came to pass that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God for which the LORD their God had sent him to them even all these words 2 Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johan the son of Kareah and all the proud men saying unto Jeremiah Thou speakest falâ—ly the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say Go not into Egypt to sojourn there 3 But Baruch-the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us for to deliver us into the hand of the Caldeans that they might put us to death and carry us away captives into Babylon 4 So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces and all the people obeyed not the voice of the LORD to dwell in the land of Judah 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces took all the remnant of Judah that were returned from all nations whither they had been driven to dwell in the land of Judah 6 Even men and women and children and the kings daughters and every person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah 7 So they came into the land of Egypt for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD thus came they even to Tahpanhes 8 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes saying 9 Take great stones in thine hand and hide them in the clay in the brick-kiln which is at the entry of Pharaohs house in Tahpanhes in the sight of the men of Judah 10 And say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon my servant and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid and the shall spread his royal pavilion over them 11 And when he cometh he shall smite the land of Egypt and deliver * Ch. 15.2 Zech. 11.9 such as are for death to death and such as are for captivity to captivity and such as are for the sword to the sword 12 And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt and he shall burn them and carry them away captives and he shall aray himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd putteth on his garment and he shall go forth from thence in peace 13 He shall break also the †Heb. statutes or standing images images of ‖ Or the house of the sun Beth-shemesh that is in the land of Egypt and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire CHAP. XLIV 1 Jeremiah expresieth the desolation of Judah for their idolatry 11 He prophesieth their destruction who commit idolatry in Egypt 15 The obstinacy of the Jews 20 Jeremiah threatneth them for the same 29 and for a signe prophesieth the destruction of Egypt THe word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews which dwell in the land of Egypt which dwell at Migdol and at Tahpanhes and at Noph and in the countrey of Pathros saying 2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah and behold this day they are a desolation and no man dwelleth therein 3 Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger in that
then shall they know that I am the LORD 16 This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her the daughters of the nations shall lament her they shall lament for her even for Egypt and for all her multitude saith the Lord GOD. 17 ¶ It came to pass aâ—so in the twelfth year in the fifteenth day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 18 Son of man wail for the multitude of Egypt and cast them down even her and the daughters of the famous nations unto the nether parts of the earth with them that go down into the pit 19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty go down and be thou laid with the uncircumcised 20 They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword ‖ Or the 〈◊〉 is 〈◊〉 she is del vered to the sword draw her and all her multitudes 21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him they are gone down they lie uncircumcised slain by the sword 22 Asshur is there and all her company his graves are about him all of them slain faln by the sword 23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit and her company is round about her grave all of them slain faln by the sword which caused ‖ Or dismaâ—â—â— terrour in the land of the living 24 There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave all of them slain faln by the sword which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth which caused their terrour in the land of the living yet have they born their shame with them that go down to the pit 25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though their terrour was caused in the land of the living yet have they born their shame with them that go down to the pit he is put in the midst of them that be slain 26 There is Meshech Tubal and all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though they caused their terrour in the land of the living 27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are faln of the uncircumcised which are gone down to hell †Heb. with weaponâ— of their 〈◊〉 with their weapons of war and they have said their swords under their heads but their iniquities shall be upon their bones though they were the terrour of the mighty in the land of the living 28 Yea thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised and shalt he with them that are slain with the sword 29 There is Edom her kings and all her princes which with their might are †Heb. given or put laid by them that were slain by the sword they shall lie with the uncircumcised and with them that go down to the pit 30 There be the princes of the north all of them and all the Zidonians which are gone down with the slain with their terrour they are ashamed of their might and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit 31 Pharaoh shall see them and shall be comforted over all his multitude even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword saith the Lord GOD. 32 For I have caused my terrour in the land of the living and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword even Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXXIII 1 According to the duty of a watchman in warning the people 7 Ezekiel is admonished of his duty 10 God sheweth the justice of his ways towards the penitent and towards revolters 17 He maintaineth his justice 21Vpon the news of the taking of Jerusalem he prophesieth the desolation of the land 30 Gods judgement upon the mockers of the prophets AGain the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man speak to the children of thy people and say unto them †Heb. A land when I bring a sword upon her When I bring the sword upon a land if the people of the land take a man of their coasts and set him for their watchman 3 It when he seeth the sword come upon the land he blow the trumpet and warn the people 4 Then †Heb. he that hearing heareth whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning it the sword come and take him away his bloud shall be upon his own head 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and took not warning his bloud shall be upon him but he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul 6 But if the watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet and the people be not warned it the sword come and take any person from among them he is taken away in his iniquity but his bloud will I require at the watchmans hand 7 ¶ * Chap. 3.17 c. So thou O son of man I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth and warn them from me 8 When I say unto the wicked O wicked man thou shalt surely die if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way that wicked man shall die in his iniquity but his bloud will I require at thine hand 9 Nevertheless if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it If he do not turn from his way he shall die in his iniquity but thou hast delivered thy soul 10 ¶ Therefore O thou son of man speak unto the house of Israel Thus ye speak saying If our transgressions and our sins be upon us and we pine away in them how should we then live 11 Say unto them As I live saith the Lord GOD * 2 Sam. 14.14 Ch. 18.32 I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from his way and live turn ye turn ye from your evil ways for * Chap. 18.31 why will ye die O house of Israel 12 Therefore thou son of man say unto the children of thy people The * Chap. 18 2â— righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression as for the wickedness of the wicked he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth 13 When I shall say to the righteous that he shall surely live if he trust to his own righteousness and commit iniquity all his righteousness shall not be remembred but for his iniquity that he hath committed he shall die for it 14 Again when I say unto the wicked Thou shalt surely die if he turn
the truth witnessâ—th 24 O hear the prayer of thy servant and give ear to the petition of thy creature 25 For while I live I will speak and so long as I have understanding I will answer 26 O look not upon the sins of thy people but on them which serve thee in truth 27 Regard not the wicked inventions of the heathen but the desire of those that keep thy testimonies in afflictions 28 Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee but remember them which according to thy will have known thy fear 29 Let it not be thy will to destroy them which have lived like beasts but to look upon them that have clearly taught thy law 30 Take thou no indignation at them which are deemed worse then beasts but love them that alway put their trust in thy righteousness and glory 31 For we and our fathers ‖ Or are sick do languish of such diseases but because of us sinners thou shalt be called merciful 32 For if thou ‖ Or be willing hast a desire to have mercy upon us thou shalt be called merciful to us namely that have no works of righteousness 33 For the just which have many good works laid up with thee shall out of their own deeds receive reward 34 For what is man that thou shouldest take displeasure at him or what is a corruptible generation that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it 35 * 1 King 8.46 2 Chr. 6.36 For in truth there is no man among them that be born but he hath dealt wickedly and among the faithful there is none which hath not done amiss 36 For in this O Lord thy righteousness and thy goodness shall be declared if thou be merciful unto them which have not the ‖ Or substance confidence of good works 37 Then answered he me and said Some things hast thou spoken aright and according unto thy words it shall be 38 For indeed I will not think on the disposition of them which have sinned before death before judgement before destruction 39 But * Gen. 4.4 I will rejoyce over the disposition of the righteous and I will remember also their pilgrimage and the salvation and the reward that they shall have 40 Like as I have spoken now so shall it come to pass 41 For as the husbandman soweth much seed upon the ground and planteth many trees and yet the thing that is sown good in his season cometh not up neither doth all that is planted take root even so is it of them that are sown in the world they shall not all be saved 42 I answered then and said If I have found grace let me speak 43 Like as the husbandmans seed perisheth if it come not up and receive not thy rain in due season or if there come too much rain and corrupt it 44 Even so perisheth man also which is formed with thy hands and is called thine own image because thou art like unto him for whose sake thou hast made all things and likened him unto the husbandmans seed 45 Be not wroth with us but spare thy people and have mercy upon thine own inheritance for thou art merciful unto thy creature 46 Then answered he me and said Things present are for the present and things to come for such as be to come 47 For thou comest far short that thou shouldest be able to love my creature more then I but I have oft-times drawn nigh unto thee and unto it but never to the unrighteous 48 In this also thou art marvellous before the most High 49 In that thou hast humbled thy self as it becometh thee and hast not judged thy self worthy to be much glorified among the righteous 50 For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world because they have walked in great pride 51 But understand thou for thy self and seek out the glory for such as be like thee 52 For unto you is paradise opened the tree of life is planted the time to come is prepared plenteousness is made ready a city is builded and rest is allowed yea perfect goodness and wisdom 53 The root of evil is sealed up from you weakness and the moth is hid from you and corruption is fled into ‖ Or the grave hell to be forgotten 54 Sorrows are passed and in the end is shewed the treasure of immortality 55 And therefore ask thou no more questions concerning the multitude of them that perish 56 For when they had taken liberty they despised the most High thought scorn of his law and forsook his ways 57 Moreover they have troden down his righteous 58 And * Ps 14. â— and 53.1 said in their heart that there is no God yea and that knowing they must die 59 For as the things aforesaid shall receive you so thirst and pain are prepared for them for it was not his will that men should come to nought 60 But they which be created have defiled the name of him that made them were unthankful unto him which prepared life for them 61 And therefore is my judgement now at hand 62 These things have I not shewed unto all men but unto thee and a few like thee Then answered I and said 63 Behold O Lord now hast thou shewed me the multitude of the wonders which thou wilt begin to do in the last times but at what time thou hast not shewed me CHAP. IX 7 Who shall be saved and who not 10 All the world is now corrupted 22 yet God doth save a few 33 He complaineth that those perish which keep Gods law 38 and seeth a woman lamenting in a field HE answered me then and said Measure thou the time diligently in it self and when thou seest part of the signs past which I have told thee before 2 Them shalt thou understand that it is the very same time wherein the Highest will begin to visit the world which he made 3 Therefore when there shall be seen * Matth. 14.7 earthquakes and uproars of the people in the world 4 Then shalt thou well understand that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee even from the beginning 5 For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end and the end is manifest 6 Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonders and powerful works and endings in effects and signs 7 And every one that shall be saved and shall be able to escape by his works and by saith whereby ye have beleeved 8 Shall be preserved from the said perils and shall see my salvation in my sand and within my borders for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning 9 Then ‖ Or. they shall marvel shall they be in pitiful case which now have abused my ways and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments 10 For such as in their
upon the wicked 12 upon Egypt 28 An horrible vision 43 Babylon and Asia are threatned BEhold speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophesie which I will put in thy mouth saith the Lord. 2 And cause them to be written in paper for they are faithful and true 3 Fear not the imaginations against thee let not the incredulity of them trouble thee that speak against thee 4 For all the unfaithful shall die in their unfaithfulness 5 Behold saith the Lord I will bring plagues upon the world the sword famine death and destruction 6 For wickedness hath exceedingly polluted the whose earth and their hurtful works are fulfilled 7 Therefore faith the Lord 8 I will hold my tongue no more as touching their wickedness which they profanely commit neither will I suffer them in those things in which they wickedly exercise themselves behold the * Rev. 6.10 â— 19.2 innocent and râ—ghteouâ— bloâ—d cryeth unto me and the souls of the just complain continually 9 And therefore faith the Lord. I will surely avenge them and receive unto me all the innocent bloud from among them 10 Behold my people is led as a flock to the slaughter I will not suffer them now to dwell in the land of Egypt 11 But I will bring them with a mighty hand and a stretched out arm and smite Egypt with plagues as before and will destroy all the land thereof 12 Egypt shall mourn and the foundation of it shall be smitten with the plague and punishment that God shall bring upon it 13 They that till the ground shall mourn for their seeds shall fail through the blasting and hail and with a fearful constellation 14 Wo to the world and them that dwell therein 15 For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh and one people shall stand up to fight against another and swords in their hands 16 For there shall be sedition among men and invading one another they shall not regard their kings nor princes and the course of their actions shall stand in their power 17 A man shall desire to go into a city and shall not be able 18 For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled the houses shall be destroyed and men shall be afraid 19 A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour but shall destroy their houses with the sword and spoil their goods because of the lack of bread and for great tribulation 20 Behold saith God I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me which are from the rising of the sun from the south from the east and Libanus to turn themselves one against another and repay the things that they have done to them 21 Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen so will I do also and recompense in their bosom Thus saith the Lord God 22 My right hand shall not spare the sinners and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent bloud upon the earth 23 The fire is gone forth from his wrath and hath consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners like the straw that is kindled 24 Wo to them that sin and keep not my commandments saith the Lord 25 I will not spare them go your way ye children from the power defile not my sanctuary 26 For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction 27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them for God shall not deliver you because ye have finned against him 28 Behold an horrible vision and the appearance thereof from the east 29 Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth that all they which hear them may fear and tremble 30 Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wilde bores of the wood and with great power shall they come and joyn battel with them and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be fear and dread and strife ‖ Or against among their kings 34 Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south and they are very horrible to look upon full of wrath and storm 35 They shall smite one upon another and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth even their own star and bloud shall be from the sword unto the belly 36 And dung of men unto the camels ‖ Or pastern or litter hough 37 And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth and they that see the wrath shall be afraid and trembling shall come upon them 38 And then shall there come great storms from the south and from the north and another part from the west 39 And strong winds shall arise from the east and shall open it and the cloud which he raised up in wrath and the star stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon and ‖ Or destroy make her afraid 44 They shall come to her and besiege her the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven and all they that be about her shall bewail her 45 And they that remain under her shall do service unto them that have put her in fear 46 And thou Asia that art ‖ Or like unto Babylon partaker of the hope of Babylon and art the glory of her person 47 Wo be unto thee thou wretch because thou hast made thy self like unto her and hast deckt thy daughters in wheredom that they might please and glory in thy lovers which have alway desired to commit whoredom with thee 48 Thou hast followed her that is hated in all her works and inventions therefore saith God 49 I will send plagues upon thee widowhood poverty famine sword and pestilence to waste thy houses with destruction and death 50 And the glory of
father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouringâ— of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the â—and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. VII 11 Raguel telleth Tobias what had happened to his daughter 12 and giveth her in marriage unto him 17 She is conveyed to her chamber and weepeth 18 Her mother comforteth her ANd when they were come to Ecbatane they came to the house of Raguel and Sara met them and after they had saluted one another she brought them into the house 2 Then said Raguel to Edna his wife How like is this young man to Tobit my cousin 3 And Raguel asked them From whence
sendeth out his twelve apostles enabling them with power to do miracles 5 giveth them their charge teacheth them 16 comforteth them against persecutionâ— 40 and promiseth a blessing to those that receive them ANd * Mâ—r. 3.14 Luke 9.1 when he had called unto him his twelve disciples he gave them power ‖ Or over against unclean spirits to cast them out and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these The first Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother James the son of Zebedee and John his brother 3 Philip and Bartholomew Thomas and Matthew the publican James the son of Alpheus and Lebbeus whose surname was Thaddeus 4 Simon the Canaanite and Judas Iscariot who also betrayed him 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth and commanded them saying Go not into the way of the Gentiles and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not 6 * Act. 13.46 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel 7 And as ye go preach saying * Luk. 10.9 The kingdom of heaven is at hand 8 Heal the sick cleanse the lepers raise the dead cast out devils freely ye have received freely give 9 * Mar. 6.8 Luke 9.3 and 22.35 ‖ Or get Provide neither gold nor silver nor brass in your purses 10 Nor scrip for your journey neither two coats neither shoes nor yet staves * Luk. 10.7 1 Tim. 5.18 for the workman is worthy of his meat 11 * Luk. 10.8 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter enquire who in it is worthy and there abide till ye go thence 12 And when ye come into an house salute it 13 And if the house be worthy let your peace come upon it but if it be not worthy let your peace return to you 14 * Mar. 6.11 And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear your words when ye depart out of that house or city * Act. 13.51 shake off the dust of your feet 15 Verily I say unto you It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgement then for that city 16 ¶ * Luk. 10.3 Behold I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves be ye therefore wise as serpents and ‖ Or simple harmless as doves 17 But beware of men for they will deliver you up to the councils and they will scourge you in their synagogues 18 And ye shall be brought before governours and kings for my sake for a testimony against them and the Gentiles 19 * Mark 13.11 Luk. 12.11 But when they deliver you up take no thought how or what ye shall speak for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak 20 For it is not ye that speak but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you 21 * Luke 21 1â— And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death and the father the childe and the children shall rise up against their parents and cause them to be put to death 22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake * Mark 13.13 but he that endureth to the end shall be saved 23 But when they persecute you in this city flee ye into another for verily I say unto you ye shall not ‖ Or â—nd or finish have gone over the cities of Israel till the Son of man be come 24 * Luk. â— 40 Joh. 13.16 The disciple is not above his master nor the servant above his lord 25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master and the servant as his lord if they have called the master of the house Beelzebub how much more shall they call them of his houshold 26 Fear them not therefore * Mar. 4.22 Luk. 8.17 and 12.2 for there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed and hid that shall not be known 27 What I tell you in darkness that speak ye in light and what ye hear in the ear that preach ye upon the house-tops 28 * Luk. 12 4. XIII 1 Christ foretelleth the destruction of the temple 9 the persecutions for the gospel 10 that the gospel must be preached to all nations 14 that great calamities shall happen to the Jews 24 and the manner of his coming to judgement 32 The hour whereof being known to none every man is to watch and pray that we be not found unprovided when he cometh to eath one particularly by death ANd * Mat. 24. ◠as he went out of the temple one of his disciples saith unto him Master see what manner of stones and what buildings are hero 2 And Jesus answering said unto him Seest thou these great buildings there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately 4 * Mat. 24.3 Tell us when shall these things be and what shall be the signe when all these things shall be fulfilled 5 And Jesus answering them began to say Take heed lest any man deceive you 6 For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many 7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars be ye not troubled for such things must needs be but the end shall not be yet 8 For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be earth-quakes in divers places and there shall be famines and troubles these are the beginnings of ‖ The word in the original importeth the pains of a woman in travail sorrows 9 ¶ But take heed to your selves for they shall deliver you up to councils and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers kings for my sake for a testimony against them 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations 11 * Mat. 10.19 But when they shall lead you and deliver you up take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak neither do ye premeditate but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour that speak ye for it is not ye that speak but the holy Ghost 12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death and the father the son and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake but he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved 14 ¶ * Mat. 24.15 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Damel the prophet standing where it ought not let him that readeth understand then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains 15 And let him that is on the house-top not go down into the house neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment 17 But wo to them that are with childe and to them that give suck in those days 18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter 19 For in those days shall be affliction such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time neither shall be 20 And except that the Lord had shortned those days no flesh should be saved but for the elects sake whom he hath chosen he hath shortned the days 21 * Mat. 24.23 And then if any man shall say to you Lo here is Christ or lo he is there beleeve him not 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce if it were possible even the elect 23 But take ye heed behold I have foretold you all things 24 ¶ * Mat. 24.29 But in those days after that tribulation the sun shall be darkned and the moon shall not give her sight 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory 27 And then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven 28 Now learn a parable of the fig-tree When her branch is yet tender and putteth sorth leaves ye know that summer is near 29 So ye in like manner When ye shall see these things come to pass know that it is nigh even at the doors 30 Verily I say unto you that this generation shall not pass till all these things be done 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away 32 ¶ But of that day and that hour knoweth no man no not the angels which are in heaven neither the Son but the Father 33 * Mat. 24.42 Take ye heed watch and pray for ye know not when the time is 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey who lest his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work and commanded the porter to watch 35 Watch ye therefore for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cock-crowing or in the morning 36 Lest coming suddenly he finde you sleeping 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all Watch. XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fieâ— with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. â—1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. â—3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Isâ— 2.19 â—â—os 1â— 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a â—â—ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chriâ—t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of
stone me 33 The Jews answered him saying For a good work we stone thee not but for blasphemy and because that thou being a man makest thy self God 34 Jesus answered them * Psal 8â— 6 Is it not written in your law I said Ye are gods 35 If he called them gods unto whom the word of God came and the scripture cannot be broken 36 Say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world Thou blasphemest because I said I am the Son of God 37 If I do not the works of my Father beleeve me not 38 But if I do though ye beleeve not me beleeve the works that ye may know and beleeve that the Father is in me and I in him 39 Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized and there he abode 41 And many reforted unto him and said John did no miracle but all things that John spake of this man were true 42 And many beleeved on him there CHAP. XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4â— Many Jews beleeve 47 The bâ—â—h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which anoâ—nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying Adramyttium we lanched meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia one Aristarchus a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us 3 And the next day we touched at Sidon And Julius courteously entreated Paul and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself 4 And when we had lanched from thence we sailed under Cyprus because the winds were contrary 5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphilia we came to Myra a city of Lycia 6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy and he put us therein 7 And when we had sailed slowly many days and scarce were come over against Cnidus the wind not suffering us we sailed under ‖ Or Candy Crete over against Salmone 8 And hardly passing it came unto a place which is called The fair havens nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea 9 Now when much time was spent and when sailing was now dangerous because the fast was now already past Paul admonished them 10 And said unto them Sirs I perceive that this voyage will be with ‖ Or injury hurt and much damage not onely of the lading and ship but also of our lives 11 Nevertheless the centurion beleeved the master and the owner of the ship more then those things which were spoken by Paul 12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in the more paâ—t advised to depart thence also if by any means they might attain to Phenice and there to winter which is an haven of Crete and lieth toward the south-west and north-west 13 And when the south-wind blew softly supposing that they had obtained their purpose loosing thence they sailed close by Crete 14 But not long after there ‖ Or bâ—at arose against it a tempestuous wind called Euroclydon 15 And when the ship was caught and could not bear up into the wind we let her drive 16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda we had much work to come by the boat 17 Which when they had taken up they used helps undergirding the ship and fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands strake sail and so were driven 18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest the next day they lightned the ship 19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship 20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared and no small tempest lay on us all hope that we should be saved was then taken away 21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them and said Sirs ye should have hearkned unto me and not have loosed from Crete and to have gained this harm and loss 22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer for there shall be no loss of any mans life among you but of the ship 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God whose I am and whom I serve 24 Saying Fear not Paul thou must be brought before Cesar and to God hath given thee all them that sail with thee 25 Wherefore sirs be of good cheer for I beleeve God that it shall be even as it was told me 26 Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island 27 But when the fourteenth night was come as we were driven up and down in Adria about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some countrey 28 And founded and found it twenty fathoms and when they had gone a little further they founded again and found it fifteen fathoms 29 Then fearing lest they should have faln upon rocks they cast four anchors out of the stern and wished for the day 30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship when they had let down the boat into the sea under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the souldiers Except these abide in the ship ye cannot be saved 32 Then the souldiers cut off the ropes of the boat and let her fall off 33 And while the day was coming on Paul besought them all to take meat saying This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting having taken nothing 34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat for this is for your health for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you 35 And when he had thus spoken he took bread and gave thanks to God in presence of them all and when he had broken it he began to eat 36 Then were they all of good cheer and they also took some meat 37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls 38 And when they had eaten enough they lightned the ship and cast out the wheat into the sea 39 And when it was day they knew not the land but they discovered a certain creek with a shore into the which they were minded if it were possible to thrust in the ship 40 And when they had ‖ Or cut the XIII 1 He threatneth severity and the power of his apostleship against obstinate sinners 5 and advising them to a trial of their faith 7 and to reformation of their sins before his coming 11 be concludeth his epistle with a general exhortation and a prayer THis is the third time I am coming to you * Deut. 19.15 In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established 2 I told you before and foretel you as if I were present the second time and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have finned and to all other that if I come again I will not spare 3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me which to you-ward is not weak but is mighty in you 4 For though he was crucified through weakness yet he liveth by the power of God For we also are weak ‖ Or with him in him but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you 5 Examine your selves whether ye be in the faith prove your own selves know ye not your own selves how that Jesus Christ is in you except ye be reprobates 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates 7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil not that we should appear approved but that ye should do that which is
