they_o need_v not_o to_o be_v cite_v and_o further_o they_o may_v say_v if_o there_o be_v any_o man_n of_o such_o excellent_a temper_n as_o just_a now_o describe_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o find_v some_o who_o we_o take_v to_o be_v of_o the_o best_a of_o man_n and_o in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n have_v undoubted_o have_v good_a effect_n complain_v notwithstanding_o of_o the_o dulness_n hardness_n and_o worldliness_n of_o their_o heart_n though_o too_o many_o be_v all_o be_v not_o hypocrite_n in_o these_o complaint_n nor_o be_v the_o complaint_n mere_o cant._n my_o answer_n hereto_o shall_v be_v first_o by_o desire_v my_o expression_n before_o may_v be_v careful_o consider_v and_o not_o strain_v beyond_o their_o import_n or_o my_o intention_n i_o have_v say_v man_n in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n prevail_v general_o that_o be_v for_o the_o main_a attend_v unto_o the_o christian_a doctrine_n and_o examine_v and_o judge_v such_o action_n as_o occur_v thereby_o that_o they_o comply_v with_o such_o judgement_n and_o endeavour_v constancy_n in_o such_o compliance_n that_o hereby_o they_o arrive_v at_o this_o pitch_n not_o to_o allow_v themselves_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n or_o in_o the_o neglect_n of_o any_o know_a duty_n and_o thence_o follow_v general_o or_o habitual_o such_o a_o temper_n of_o heart_n as_o describe_v i_o do_v not_o say_v nor_o do_v i_o mean_v that_o in_o some_o one_o or_o few_o single_a instance_n it_o be_v never_o otherwise_o in_o any_o of_o the_o particular_n there_o come_v a_o traveller_n 2_o sam._n twelve_o 4._o that_o be_v there_o enter_v a_o act_n of_o lust_n which_o be_v a_o stranger_n there_o unto_o david_n and_o he_o be_v afterward_o for_o a_o considerable_a time_n in_o a_o very_a strange_a temper_n but_o i_o do_v say_v now_o 2._o such_o lapse_n miscarriage_n or_o crime_n and_o any_o internal_a distemper_n consequent_a thereupon_o in_o good_a man_n proceed_v not_o doubtless_o from_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o they_o but_o from_o the_o defect_n interruption_n or_o some_o violent_a obstruction_n of_o it_o and_o if_o very_o good_a man_n too_o little_o express_v or_o not_o constant_o enough_o comply_v with_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n that_o will_v not_o warrant_v any_o person_n either_o who_o be_v to_o teach_v it_o for_o state_v it_o too_o low_a or_o who_o be_v to_o practise_v it_o for_o not_o aim_v above_o the_o fault_n of_o such_o precedent_n and_o as_o to_o david_n case_n it_o be_v sure_a david_n do_v live_v and_o be_v general_o what_o i_o have_v describe_v and_o though_o this_o practice_n and_o this_o temper_n be_v for_o a_o while_n by_o that_o dreadful_a fall_n interrupt_v yet_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n prevail_v again_o and_o final_o so_o that_o he_o recover_v and_o remaintain_v both_o but_o as_o far_o forth_o as_o either_o fail_v so_o far_o forth_o at_o that_o time_n or_o time_n come_v he_o short_a of_o approve_v himself_o a_o person_n actuate_v by_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o in_o the_o great_a instance_n mention_v there_o be_v no_o doubt_n till_o his_o recovery_n he_o forfeit_v both_o god_n favour_n and_o all_o claim_n he_o can_v lay_v to_o be_v a_o godly_a man_n though_o i_o do_v not_o think_v the_o internal_a principle_n of_o holiness_n be_v thereby_o in_o he_o quite_o extinct_a nor_o be_v habit_n raze_v out_o of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n but_o as_o they_o be_v introduce_v that_o be_v by_o frequent_a practice_n or_o repetion_n of_o act_n last_o and_o distincty_a as_o to_o what_o sin_n may_v be_v conceive_v consistent_a with_o the_o general_a prevalence_n of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o man_n for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o take_v sin_n of_o ignorance_n and_o of_o error_n even_o under_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v sin_n true_o so_o call_v and_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n as_o well_o on_o our_o hand_n of_o a_o general_a repentance_n or_o repentance_n of_o they_o in_o the_o lump_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o of_o a_o pardon_n on_o god_n now_o that_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a man_n these_o be_v frequent_a there_o be_v no_o doubt_n and_o as_o to_o sin_n of_o surprisal_n common_a inadvertency_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o infirmity_n of_o passion_n seize_v we_o together_o with_o the_o distemper_n of_o mind_n dulness_n flatness_n hardness_n in_o some_o measure_n discomposedness_n and_o what_o else_o may_v flow_v from_o such_o original_n not_o allow_v there_o can_v be_v no_o question_n but_o they_o may_v be_v and_o be_v incident_a unto_o those_o man_n in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n most_o prevail_v for_o we_o be_v here_o man_n have_v flesh_n and_o blood_n about_o we_o and_o not_o angel_n but_o as_o to_o deliberate_v sin_v though_o the_o time_n of_o deliberation_n shall_v be_v but_o short_a still_o i_o stand_v to_o it_o the_o allow_v a_o man_n self_n in_o any_o know_a sin_n whether_o of_o commission_n or_o omission_n be_v contrary_a to_o irreconcilable_a with_o and_o in_o tantum_fw-la for_o so_o much_o destructive_a of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n nor_o may_v any_o person_n so_o allow_v himself_o conclude_v while_o he_o so_o allow_v or_o have_v not_o recover_v himself_o by_o mature_a repentance_n that_o he_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n or_o conduct_v of_o god_n spirit_n or_o indeed_o in_o a_o savable_a condition_n for_o know_v you_o not_o to_o who_o you_o yield_v yourselves_o servant_n to_o obey_v his_o servant_n you_o be_v to_o who_o you_o obey_v whether_o of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o observe_v this_o yield_a ourselves_o to_o obey_v sin_n be_v in_o itself_o unto_o death_n and_o ver_fw-la 20._o be_v servant_n of_o sin_n you_o be_v free_a from_o righteousness_n out_o of_o a_o justify_v estate_n for_z v._n 21._o the_o end_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o v._n 23._o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n nor_o do_v i_o doubt_v but_o in_o this_o doctrine_n i_o be_o faithful_a as_o well_o as_o tender_v to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n §_o 6._o now_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o on_o this_o head_n we_o have_v say_v the_o sum_n be_v godliness_n at_o least_o as_o the_o world_n now_o stand_v do_v not_o usual_o get_v power_n over_o man_n but_o by_o several_a degree_n we_o be_v first_o bring_v to_o the_o understanding_n of_o then_o to_o a_o conviction_n and_o belief_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christian_a faith_n and_o manner_n hereby_o conscience_n awaken_v as_o well_o as_o enlighten_v attend_v its_o office_n judge_n and_o dictate_v aright_o with_o these_o dictate_v the_o man_n comply_v as_o sway_v by_o what_o he_o be_v before_o suppose_a to_o believe_v which_o belief_n sway_v not_o to_o comply_v only_o in_o some_o few_o single_a instance_n but_o to_o endeavour_v a_o universal_a conformity_n to_o good_a conscience_n and_o the_o evangelical_n law_n the_o sense_n of_o both_o which_o be_v suppose_v by_o this_o time_n to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o from_o this_o constant_a and_o honest_a endeavour_n of_o such_o conformity_n the_o rule_n of_o our_o duty_n proceed_v a_o facility_n and_o cheerfulness_n in_o holy_a practice_n and_o from_o thence_o a_o general_a seriousness_n tenderness_n and_o heavenliness_n of_o mind_n now_o in_o as_o many_o as_o lead_v this_o life_n though_o with_o a_o multitude_n of_o infirmity_n to_o which_o flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v subject_a i_o say_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n appear_v or_o godliness_n have_v obtain_v its_o due_a power_n for_o it_o have_v transform_v such_o man_n life_n and_o heart_n and_o though_o it_o have_v not_o set_v they_o above_o all_o sin_n and_o all_o disorder_n of_o mind_n which_o to_o do_v in_o this_o life_n be_v not_o the_o pretence_n of_o christianity_n yet_o have_v it_o wrought_v out_o all_o the_o old_a leaven_n of_o malice_n and_o wickedness_n 1_o cor._n v._o 8._o of_o vicious_a self_n love_n of_o covetousness_n pride_n disobedience_n formality_n and_o the_o other_o evil_n tax_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o famous_a 2_o tim._n three_o 2_o 3_o etc._n etc._n and_o replenish_v their_o soul_n with_o sincerity_n and_o truth_n of_o holiness_n with_o a_o amiable_a and_o heavenly_a temper_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n godliness_n here_o be_v to_o effect_v therefore_o in_o and_o on_o such_o godliness_n through_o divine_a grace_n have_v its_o due_a power_n and_o into_o this_o estate_n may_v every_o one_o who_o read_v this_o find_v himself_o transform_v amen_n chap._n iii_o of_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n sect._n 1_o the_o practice_n by_o which_o man_n deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n reduce_v to_o two_o head_n sect
so_o addict_v be_v they_o to_o their_o curse_a lust_n so_o have_v they_o sell_v themselves_o to_o serve_v sensual_a brutish_a appetite_n or_o a_o worldly_a mind_n that_o notwithstanding_o all_o remora_n and_o dissuasives_n on_o they_o run_v and_o venture_v judgement_n and_o damnation_n all_o wrath_n present_a and_o to_o come_v sometime_o haply_o they_o will_v set_v their_o wit_n to_o work_v for_o the_o palliate_a and_o extenuate_v the_o sin_n they_o have_v addict_v themselves_o to_o for_o the_o find_v out_o plea_n and_o excuse_n to_o retain_v they_o a_o while_n nay_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o make_n of_o they_o no_o sin_n but_o only_a matter_n of_o christian_a liberty_n they_o will_v seek_v knot_n in_o bulrush_n study_v little_a slaw_n in_o the_o argument_n with_o which_o religion_n come_v press_v upon_o the_o soul_n and_o practice_n of_o mankind_n and_o if_o any_o such_o thing_n they_o ever_o find_v oh_o how_o they_o magnify_v it_o and_o insult_v possible_o a_o while_n over_o religion_n and_o religious_a man_n in_o the_o mean_a while_n nothing_o do_v they_o find_v or_o can_v they_o find_v which_o can_v final_o satisfy_v the_o daily_a and_o perhaps_o hourly_a opposition_n from_o within_o but_o against_o these_o they_o proceed_v in_o a_o manner_n like_o phraoh_n with_o a_o high_a hand_n i_o mean_v they_o sin_v deliberate_o and_o deliberate_o live_v in_o sin_n against_o light_n and_o conscience_n they_o neither_o will_v or_o perhaps_o for_o wickedness_n scarce_o can_v live_v any_o otherwise_o if_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v of_o religion_n or_o if_o there_o be_v no_o such_o be_v as_o a_o god_n either_o to_o fear_v or_o worship_n this_o indeed_o be_v a_o dreadful_a sort_n of_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o which_o fall_v but_o in_o one_o point_n namely_o of_o malice_n or_o spite_n against_o god_n and_o his_o gospel_n short_a of_o what_o many_o protestant_a divine_n how_o true_o i_o must_v not_o here_o stand_v to_o speak_v have_v conceive_v to_o be_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o unto_o death_n and_o unpardonable_a yet_o god_n know_v this_o practice_n be_v so_o frequent_a in_o the_o christian_a world_n at_o least_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o it_o that_o we_o can_v scarce_o find_v a_o city_n parish_n or_o even_o village_n in_o which_o some_o may_v not_o be_v find_v guilty_a of_o it_o as_o in_o the_o next_o chapter_n will_v perhaps_o be_v urge_v §_o 4._o it_o please_v god_n indeed_o sometime_o in_o his_o just_a judgement_n to_o suffer_v some_o such_o bold_a sinner_n as_o these_o to_o go_v on_o to_o that_o height_n that_o they_o in_o a_o sort_n sin_n away_o conscience_n and_o extinguish_v the_o candle_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o have_v so_o long_o be_v smother_v by_o they_o even_o as_o they_o refuse_v to_o acknowledge_v it_o or_o yield_v obedience_n god_n have_v give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o convenient_a rom._n i._n 28._o they_o grow_v past_a feel_n ephes_n four_o 19_o they_o harden_v themselves_o till_o god_n at_o length_n harden_v they_o that_o be_v till_o he_o leave_v they_o to_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o hardness_n resolve_v his_o grace_n shall_v never_o have_v more_o to_o do_v with_o they_o such_o as_o these_o indeed_o have_v deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n as_o far_o as_o in_o themselves_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o have_v suppress_v it_o till_o they_o have_v destroy_v it_o a_o dreadful_a height_n be_v this_o nor_o can_v we_o conceive_v any_o great_a compliment_n or_o further_a degree_n of_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godlness_n to_o which_o man_n can_v proceed_v than_o this_o be_v except_o we_o shall_v suppose_v some_o of_o these_o desperate_a wretch_n to_o attempt_v in_o other_o what_o they_o have_v effect_v in_o themselves_o namely_o to_o endeavour_v the_o debauch_v other_o man_n conscience_n and_o as_o far_o as_o they_o can_v extinguish_v in_o the_o world_n the_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o all_o religion_n it_o be_v too_o certain_a some_o such_o miscreant_n or_o monster_n of_o man_n be_v to_o be_v find_v who_o know_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o they_o which_o commit_v such_o thing_n be_v worthy_a of_o death_n not_o only_o do_v the_o same_o but_o have_v pleasure_n in_o they_o that_o do_v they_o romans_z i._n 32._o nay_o have_v pleasure_n in_o have_v make_v they_o as_o senseless_a and_o desperate_a as_o themselves_o because_o perhaps_o by_o their_o be_v make_v such_o there_o be_v so_o many_o few_o in_o the_o world_n to_o condemn_v and_o so_o many_o more_o to_o patronize_v their_o villainous_a practice_n but_o this_o be_v a_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliniss_n which_o will_v scarce_o consist_v with_o have_v so_o much_o as_o the_o form_n of_o it_o and_o which_o therefore_o do_v not_o so_o proper_o fall_v under_o our_o present_a consideration_n §_o 5._o thus_o than_o the_o several_a way_n method_n or_o degree_n by_o which_o man_n deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n whether_o by_o obstruct_v &_o hinder_v its_o come_n in_o upon_o their_o soul_n or_o by_o suppress_v and_o overpower_v its_o attempt_n where_o it_o already_o have_v some_o place_n with_o the_o particular_n under_o each_o have_v be_v represent_v if_o what_o have_v be_v say_v of_o this_o subject_a because_o thus_o careful_o deduce_v and_o branch_v out_o shall_v be_v less_o understand_v or_o not_o sufficient_o comprehend_v by_o any_o plain_a reader_n not_o use_v to_o partition_n or_o distinction_n the_o sum_n of_o all_o be_v for_o any_o man_n who_o call_v himself_o or_o pretend_v to_o be_v a_o christian_n to_o live_v a_o disorderly_a vicious_a or_o unchristian_a life_n to_o be_v profane_a and_o general_o negligent_a of_o god_n and_o religion_n to_o be_v unjust_a uncharitable_a and_o unmercisul_n to_o be_v impure_a lewd_a or_o otherwise_o debauch_v in_o his_o private_a manner_n nay_o though_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o open_o and_o scandalous_o appear_v in_o he_o yet_o for_o he_o betwixt_o god_n and_o himself_o secret_o to_o allow_v himself_o in_o any_o know_a sin_n think_v light_o of_o hell_n torment_n or_o not_o prise_v heaven_n joy_n nay_o to_o have_v ordinary_o a_o vain_a worldly_a carnal_a heart_n untouched_a and_o unaffected_a with_o heavenly_a good_n or_o religious_a concernment_n for_o any_o person_n among_o we_o i_o say_v to_o lead_v such_o a_o life_n or_o carry_v such_o a_o heart_n be_v in_o the_o apostle_n language_n to_o deny_v or_o to_o have_v deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n yea_o though_o general_o guilty_a of_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n sect._n 1_o caution_n fror_n prevent_v some_o abuse_n which_o may_v be_v make_v of_o this_o proof_n sect._n 2._o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o charge_n prove_v sect._n 3_o the_o second_o prove_v sect._n 4._o pretend_a alleviation_n of_o our_o gild_n herein_o remove_v sect._n 5._o a_o corroborative_n of_o the_o former_a proof_n sect._n 6._o some_o reflection_n on_o the_o public_a manner_n which_o may_v vindicate_v the_o former_a censure_n sect._n 7._o a_o transition_n to_o what_o remain_v §_o 1._o time_n it_o be_v at_o length_n to_o the_o great_a question_n will_v be_v how_o or_o by_o what_o it_o practice_n that_o be_v do_v but_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o understanding_n any_o negative_a notion_n before_o we_o have_v a_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o its_o positive_a contrary_n that_o we_o may_v therefore_o be_v able_a to_o make_v a_o exacter_n estimate_n how_o many_o way_n man_n deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n we_o will_v first_o inquire_v how_o and_o by_o what_o slep_n godliness_n come_v to_o have_v any_o power_n upon_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n of_o man_n and_o next_o when_o it_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v its_o due_a power_n §_o 2._o we_o say_v then_o godliness_n obtain_v power_n over_o man_n by_o these_o degree_n 1._o when_o the_o principle_n of_o it_o be_v due_o understand_v by_o the_o principle_n of_o godliness_n i_o mean_v the_o plain_a &_o undoubted_a point_n of_o christian_a belief_n and_o practice_n and_o by_o a_o due_a understanding_n of_o they_o i_o mean_v a_o be_v able_a prore_n natâ_fw-la as_o occasion_n serve_v to_o frame_v in_o our_o mind_n conception_n and_o notion_n as_o well_o of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n as_o rule_n of_o practice_n there_o be_v any_o reality_n and_o it_o be_v as_o sure_o that_o tho'_o such_o feign_a story_n or_o intrigue_n may_v sometime_o confuse_o move_v our_o joy_n sorrow_n pity_n or_o sympathy_n yet_o these_o be_v only_o vain_a and_o in_o a_o sort_n irrational_a transient_a passion_n not_o change_v our_o counsel_n and_o resolution_n much_o less_o prevail_v durable_o to_o influence_n our_o manner_n and_o course_n of_o live_v the_o conduct_n of_o our_o life_n follow_v our_o settle_a persuasion_n and_o real_a sense_n of_o thing_n it_o be_v not_o therefore_o sufficient_a for_o the_o assert_v godliness_n into_o its_o due_a power_n over_o we_o that_o we_o conceive_v aright_o or_o have_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o several_a point_n of_o faith_n and_o rule_n of_o duty_n but_o it_o be_v further_a needful_a that_o we_o be_v real_o persuade_v and_o our_o heart_n deep_o possess_v these_o doctrine_n be_v true_a these_o precept_n both_o equitable_a and_o actual_o obligatory_a for_o that_o
