as_o soon_o think_v and_o say_v that_o bodily_a food_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o sound_a nourishment_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o suppose_v that_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v the_o true_a and_o sound_a comfort_n of_o a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n but_o that_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n let_v we_o proceed_v unto_o some_o further_a proof_n of_o it_o this_o be_v not_o in_o my_o mind_n obscure_o signify_v under_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o old_a law_n whether_o they_o be_v ordinary_a or_o extraordinary_a daily_a or_o yearly_o general_a or_o particular_a all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o they_o in_o measure_n more_o or_o less_o tend_v still_o unto_o he_o who_o they_o do_v prefigure_v and_o signify_v as_o the_o also_o that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o soul_n and_o in_o our_o spirit_n christ_n be_v as_o much_o yea_o far_o more_o throw_v down_o and_o humble_v that_o way_n than_o all_o flesh_n as_o appear_v by_o his_o conflict_n in_o the_o garden_n and_o by_o his_o outcry_n upon_o the_o cross_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o and_o though_o these_o have_v be_v be_v and_o be_v very_o good_a indeed_o as_o those_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o do_v feel_v they_o know_v and_o confess_v yet_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o our_o joy_n shall_v match_v they_o he_o say_v our_o consolation_n abound_v through_o he_o for_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o proportion_n betwixt_o our_o heaviness_n and_o our_o comfort_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o a_o be_v sin_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n but_o thanks_n be_v unto_o god_n which_o have_v give_v we_o victory_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o well_o
no_o eye_n have_v see_v no_o ear_n have_v hear_v no_o heart_n can_v conceive_v nor_o tongue_n can_v utter_v but_o by_o they_o so_o well_o sort_v with_o our_o nature_n to_o give_v we_o some_o sight_n smack_n or_o taste_v of_o they_o and_o even_o herein_o also_o appear_v christ_n love_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o stoop_v down_o so_o low_a unto_o we_o and_o in_o such_o base_a term_n to_o express_v unto_o we_o such_o excellent_a thing_n but_o yet_o let_v we_o a_o little_a more_o particular_o examine_v the_o word_n that_o word_n that_o be_v here_o term_a labour_n do_v not_o signify_v simple_o every_o labour_n but_o such_o a_o labour_n as_o be_v sore_o and_o have_v join_v with_o it_o toil_a of_o the_o body_n and_o moil_a of_o the_o mind_n with_o cark_n and_o care_n yea_o and_o weariness_n both_o of_o body_n and_o mind_n join_v with_o it_o as_o a_o effect_n flow_v from_o it_o and_o that_o cause_v some_o also_o to_o turn_v it_o thus_o come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a whatsoever_o it_o be_v we_o may_v see_v that_o christ_n mind_v by_o this_o metaphor_n to_o express_v this_o much_o unto_o we_o that_o distress_n of_o spirit_n upon_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o arise_v and_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n be_v no_o small_a pain_n but_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a sorrow_n enter_v deep_a into_o the_o soul_n disquiet_v the_o spirit_n distemper_a the_o body_n and_o make_v all_o part_n and_o power_n unfit_a for_o all_o or_o any_o duty_n almost_o and_o this_o to_o be_v true_a the_o scripture_n elsewhere_o show_v it_o and_o namely_o prou._n 18._o where_o it_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n may_v endure_v his_o infirmity_n but_o a_o wound_a spirit_n who_o shall_v bear_v it_o and_o our_o own_o experience_n can_v witness_v it_o if_o either_o we_o have_v be_v humble_v ourselves_o or_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o other_o man_n sorrow_n that_o way_n in_o who_o it_o have_v take_v away_o for_o the_o time_n sleep_n from_o the_o eye_n hear_v from_o the_o ear_n speech_n from_o the_o mouth_n appetite_n from_o the_o stomach_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o it_o have_v cause_v some_o to_o assay_v the_o finish_n of_o their_o pain_n as_o they_o suppose_v with_o a_o shameful_a &_o fearful_a end_n have_v it_o be_v accomplish_v which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v not_o speak_v here_o or_o propound_v elsewhere_o unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n to_o discourage_v or_o oppress_v they_o that_o be_v in_o that_o combat_n but_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o teach_v all_o man_n to_o cast_v away_o security_n and_o carelessness_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o instruct_v they_o that_o be_v so_o weak_a in_o themselves_o to_o rely_v upon_o he_o that_o be_v the_o god_n of_o their_o strength_n who_o be_v in_o they_o and_o with_o they_o and_o for_o they_o will_v doubtless_o make_v his_o strength_n and_o power_n to_o appear_v in_o their_o weakness_n that_o other_o word_n heavy_a lade_v be_v metaphorical_a also_o and_o translate_v from_o bodily_a burden_n unto_o spiritual_a that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o iniquity_n which_o lie_v more_o hard_a upon_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n though_o worldly_a man_n feel_v they_o not_o than_o any_o outward_a do_v or_o can_v upon_o the_o body_n yea_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v press_v therewithal_o unto_o death_n because_o that_o only_o reach_v unto_o the_o body_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o pain_n thereof_o the_o soul_n little_a or_o nothing_o touch_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v very_o cheerful_a and_o comfortable_a spiritual_o and_o so_o cause_v the_o soul_n almost_o to_o find_v no_o grief_n as_o in_o the_o martyr_n that_o have_v be_v so_o many_o way_n and_o so_o grievous_o torment_v may_v and_o do_v appear_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v overclogged_a with_o sin_n and_o the_o sense_n thereof_o or_o of_o god_n anger_n against_o it_o for_o the_o same_o the_o very_a body_n be_v taint_v thereby_o with_o sundry_a sort_n of_o sickness_n and_o diverse_a kind_n of_o disease_n some_o recoverable_a and_o some_o unrecoverable_a and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o much_o use_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o sin_n itself_o be_v compare_v unto_o a_o burden_n which_o may_v in_o part_n appear_v not_o only_o by_o this_o when_o the_o prophet_n call_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o shall_v fall_v upon_o man_n for_o their_o sin_n burden_n that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o iniquity_n they_o have_v commit_v &_o the_o punishment_n that_o be_v execute_v upon_o they_o for_o it_o but_o also_o by_o a_o plain_a place_n of_o the_o prophet_n david_n in_o that_o eight_o &_o thirty_o psalm_n that_o we_o sing_v before_o this_o sermon_n when_o he_o say_v my_o iniquity_n be_v go_v over_o my_o head_n and_o as_o a_o weighty_a burden_n they_o be_v too_o heavy_a for_o i_o to_o bear_v by_o all_o which_o we_o may_v see_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o slight_a or_o light_v a_o matter_n as_o man_n make_v it_o but_o a_o wade_v into_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o grossness_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o age_n wherein_o we_o live_v make_v so_o small_a or_o no_o conscience_n at_o all_o of_o sin_n and_o transgression_n be_v it_o not_o that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v occupy_v in_o some_o other_o point_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n howbeit_o this_o much_o we_o may_v say_v that_o as_o it_o argue_v small_a conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n that_o mitigate_v &_o minse_v it_o so_o it_o minister_v small_a hope_n of_o comfort_n unto_o themselves_o or_o other_o of_o the_o happy_a recovery_n out_o of_o it_o for_o how_o be_v it_o likely_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v cure_v of_o a_o disease_n that_o either_o know_v it_o not_o or_o feel_v it_o not_o or_o take_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o deadly_a and_o dangerous_a as_o it_o be_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o tender_a conscience_n charge_v yea_o surcharge_v itself_o with_o more_o than_o it_o shall_v it_o may_v be_v &_o yet_o that_o can_v hardly_o be_v if_o man_n consider_v right_o the_o height_n and_o the_o haynousnes_n yea_o the_o infiniteness_n &_o innumerablenesse_n of_o their_o own_o sin_n general_a and_o particular_a though_o in_o that_o accusation_n it_o suffer_v much_o grief_n yea_o &_o plunge_v itself_o as_o it_o be_v into_o distrustfulnes_n be_v in_o more_o hope_n of_o a_o gracious_a recovery_n which_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o such_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n shall_v minister_v some_o comfort_n because_o sin_v feel_v be_v more_o likely_a by_o repentance_n to_o be_v cure_v and_o heal_v then_o that_o that_o man_n make_v not_o keep_v or_o account_v of_o but_o to_o let_v this_o point_n pass_v and_o to_o come_v to_o that_o that_o do_v more_o nighly_a concern_v our_o purpose_n at_o this_o present_a now_o there_o follow_v the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o 28._o verse_n and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o and_o contain_v in_o they_o the_o second_o part_n thereof_o namely_o a_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n for_o the_o better_a draw_v yea_o allure_a of_o we_o unto_o he_o that_o call_v we_o unto_o himself_o but_o yet_o for_o our_o spiritual_a good_a a_o thirsty_a body_n indeed_o will_v rejoice_v to_o hear_v though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o water_n and_o not_o of_o drink_n to_o slake_v the_o thirst_n withal_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o know_v it_o and_o take_v it_o to_o be_v a_o mean_a to_o maintain_v life_n the_o tiding_n of_o ease_n and_o light_v of_o he_o in_o some_o sort_n of_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a burden_n to_o he_o that_o carry_v it_o be_v no_o doubt_n of_o it_o gladsome_a and_o joyful_a also_o because_o it_o be_v a_o toil_n and_o a_o moil_n a_o wearisomnes_n and_o weakness_n to_o body_n and_o mind_n to_o bear_v a_o weight_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v but_o small_a continual_o reason_n &_o our_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o the_o truth_n hereof_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n but_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v this_o be_v find_v true_a as_o in_o
of_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o remember_v for_o our_o own_o part_n let_v we_o know_v that_o as_o satan_n labour_v to_o root_v out_o of_o our_o heart_n general_o all_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thereby_o keep_v we_o in_o blindness_n and_o ignorance_n he_o may_v make_v we_o run_v riot_n at_o his_o pleasure_n so_o especial_o he_o travail_v either_o to_o hinder_v we_o from_o receive_v or_o have_v receive_v from_o make_v good_a use_n of_o the_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n of_o the_o word_n the_o very_a matter_n if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v and_o a_o special_a mean_v i_o be_o sure_a of_o our_o spiritual_a comfort_n for_o the_o redress_v and_o repress_v also_o of_o which_o enormity_n in_o we_o a_o godly_a man_n that_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n ignorant_a shall_v labour_n to_o abound_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o as_o he_o that_o be_v forgetful_a shall_v refresh_v his_o memory_n by_o often_o read_v meditation_n and_o conference_n in_o they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o and_o with_o his_o own_o heart_n but_o even_o by_o other_o man_n also_o and_o they_o that_o want_v feel_n of_o they_o shall_v look_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n in_o who_o all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v yea_o and_o amen_o and_o shall_v be_v much_o and_o often_o in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o the_o mean_n whereby_o christ_n be_v become_v we_o as_o the_o word_n sacrament_n prayer_n sa_v etc._n etc._n but_o above_o all_o they_o shall_v regard_v and_o labour_n for_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o be_v shed_v abroad_o in_o their_o heart_n both_o to_o make_v all_o these_o thing_n before_o name_v powerful_a in_o they_o and_o to_o pledge_v up_o also_o the_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o promise_n themselves_o because_o it_o be_v the_o carne_a penny_n of_o our_o for_o or_o in_o outward_a thing_n we_o shall_v reason_v as_o they_o do_v and_o have_v it_o follow_v that_o so_o be_v deliver_v we_o may_v easy_o bring_v all_o disorder_n and_o confusion_n into_o the_o world_n and_o overthrow_v the_o whole_a course_n and_o raze_v of_o mankind_n some_o abuse_n drink_n to_o drunkenness_n and_o other_o some_o meat_n to_o gluttony_n and_o gourmandise_n therefore_o there_o must_v be_v no_o use_n of_o meat_n and_o drink_v what_o be_v this_o else_o but_o to_o starve_v the_o excellent_a of_o god_n creature_n man_n i_o mean_v many_o abuse_v apparel_n to_o pride_n
