it_o will_v not_o be_v restrain_v by_o it_o and_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o sin_n of_o concupiscence_n take_v occasion_n from_o the_o impunity_n of_o the_o commandment_n instead_o of_o be_v restrain_v the_o less_o knowledge_n there_o be_v of_o the_o law_n the_o less_o be_v there_o of_o sin_n in_o transgress_v it_o and_o also_o the_o less_o sense_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o as_o i_o say_v as_o for_o this_o instance_n of_o concupiscence_n which_o i_o have_v not_o know_v to_o be_v a_o sin_n unless_o the_o law_n have_v tell_v i_o so_o without_o the_o law_n i_o have_v neither_o offend_v so_o high_o in_o it_o nor_o have_v so_o great_a a_o sense_n of_o my_o offence_n 9_o and_o this_o be_v find_v by_o experience_n in_o the_o man_n of_o our_o nation_n for_o any_o one_o of_o they_o who_o be_v alive_a at_o the_o promulgation_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o mount_n sinai_n may_v say_v i_o be_v alive_a to_o my_o think_n and_o as_o to_o great_a degree_n of_o that_o guilt_n which_o i_o contract_v afterward_o without_o the_o law_n once_o or_o before_o such_o time_n as_o it_o be_v there_o proclaim_v to_o we_o for_o till_o then_o i_o know_v not_o lust_n to_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o so_o by_o reason_n of_o my_o ignorance_n neither_o sin_v so_o much_o in_o it_o nor_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o it_o as_o now_o i_o be_o but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v and_o be_v plain_o make_v know_v to_o i_o by_o moses_n then_o sin_n i_o say_v which_o be_v only_o show_v and_o forbid_v but_o can_v not_o be_v restrain_v by_o it_o revive_v and_o begin_v to_o have_v the_o fullness_n of_o guilt_n and_o terror_n in_o it_o and_o i_o thenceforward_o be_v warn_v against_o it_o and_o not_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v back_o from_o it_o become_v liable_a to_o that_o death_n which_o be_v the_o wage_n of_o it_o and_o die_v by_o it_o and_o thus_o the_o law_n or_o commandment_n 10._o which_o be_v not_o only_o holy_a and_o innocent_a in_o itself_o but_o moreover_o intend_v by_o god_n for_o my_o good_a and_o ordain_v to_o life_n which_o it_o promise_v can_v i_o have_v obey_v it_o i_o notwithstanding_o find_v to_o be_v unto_o death_n to_o i_o because_o that_o become_v my_o due_a when_o i_o sin_v against_o it_o not_o as_o if_o the_o law_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o author_n of_o death_n to_o i_o more_o than_o it_o be_v of_o sin_n in_o i_o 11._o for_o it_o be_v aim_v to_o destroy_v sin_n which_o it_o show_v and_o forbid_v and_o to_o procure_v life_n which_o it_o offer_v and_o promise_n but_o the_o true_a cause_n of_o this_o effect_n so_o contrary_a to_o its_o intention_n viz._n its_o produce_v sin_n and_o death_n whenas_o it_o be_v ordain_v to_o holiness_n and_o life_n be_v its_o be_v as_o i_o say_v before_o weak_a and_o unable_a by_o all_o its_o aid_n to_o conquer_v full_o and_o restrain_v that_o sin_n which_o bring_v death_n upon_o we_o for_o it_o can_v subdue_v but_o only_o show_v and_o forbid_v it_o and_o therefore_o our_o habitual_a lust_n find_v themselves_o too_o strong_a for_o it_o burst_v through_o it_o and_o in_o spite_n of_o all_o its_o restraint_n make_v we_o commit_v the_o one_o and_o so_o become_v liable_a to_o the_o other_o 7._o for_o in_o very_a deed_n it_o be_v not_o the_o law_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o death_n to_o i_o but_o sin_n itself_o which_o take_v occasion_n or_o advantage_n by_o the_o literal_a and_o fancy_a impunity_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n deceive_v i_o through_o a_o false_a hope_n into_o the_o commission_n of_o it_o and_o by_o it_o make_v i_o in_o reality_n liable_a to_o that_o death_n which_o be_v true_o the_o wage_n of_o it_o or_o in_o a_o word_n slay_v i_o 12._o wherefore_o notwithstanding_o we_o sin_v yea_o and_o die_v also_o during_o our_o subjection_n under_o the_o law_n yet_o for_o all_o that_o neither_o can_v our_o sin_n nor_o our_o death_n be_v charge_v upon_o the_o law_n itself_o because_o instead_o of_o contribute_v to_o they_o it_o tend_v to_o destroy_v they_o by_o express_o forbid_v my_o mind_n which_o strive_v against_o it_o and_o prevail_v over_o it_o and_o make_v i_o practice_v contrary_a to_o what_o my_o mind_n approve_v so_o that_o when_o be_v incline_v by_o god_n law_n i_o will_v do_v good_a 7._o then_o be_v overrule_v by_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n i_o can_v but_o evil_a be_v lay_v before_o i_o and_o present_a with_o i_o god_n law_n i_o say_v i_o serve_v with_o the_o be_v under_o another_o power_n for_o i_o see_v another_o opposite_a law_n viz._n that_o of_o lust_n and_o sin_n which_o be_v seat_v in_o my_o bodily_a member_n not_o only_a war_a against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o my_o mind_n but_o conquer_a also_o and_o prevail_v over_o it_o bring_v i_o into_o captivity_n that_o absolute_a sort_n of_o subjection_n and_o slavery_n to_o practice_v the_o law_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v seat_v in_o my_o member_n and_o since_o i_o be_o so_o far_o enslave_v to_o the_o law_n of_o lust_n and_o sin_n when_o the_o law_n of_o god_n undertake_v i_o 24._o that_o even_o that_o law_n itself_o which_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o my_o remedy_n be_v not_o able_a to_o rescue_v and_o deliver_v i_o i_o have_v too_o great_a reason_n to_o cry_v out_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o since_o this_o law_n give_v i_o by_o moses_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v it_o from_o the_o slavery_n and_o misery_n of_o this_o body_n of_o death_n 25._o this_o indeed_o be_v our_o condition_n under_o the_o law_n which_o show_v at_o once_o the_o law_n holiness_n and_o goodness_n and_o withal_o its_o inability_n and_o weakness_n because_o notwithstanding_o it_o offer_v some_o grace_n yet_o be_v not_o that_o enough_o but_o that_o during_o our_o subjection_n under_o it_o we_o common_o serve_v sin_n still_o but_o now_o as_o for_o that_o slavish_a service_n of_o sin_n which_o a_o bare_a jew_n who_o have_v no_o other_o help_n against_o it_o but_o moses_n law_n complain_v of_o and_o belong_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o at_o first_o we_o christian_n through_o the_o surpass_a grace_n of_o christ_n gospel_n be_v deliver_v from_o already_o so_o that_o to_o such_o a_o complain_v jew_n as_o i_o have_v here_o personate_v 7._o i_o paul_n a_o apostle_n of_o jesus_n christ_n can_v ready_o make_v answer_n alter_v your_o subjection_n and_o you_o shall_v alter_v your_o service_n too_o for_o in_o become_a subject_n unto_o christ_n instead_o of_o the_o law_n you_o shall_v become_v servant_n of_o god_n instead_o of_o serve_v sin_n i_o thank_v god_n there_o be_v a_o way_n now_o in_o christ_n for_o such_o deliverance_n or_o as_o it_o be_v read_v by_o some_o copy_n vers._n the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o come_v through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n shall_v deliver_v you_o although_o the_o law_n can_v not_o which_o come_v by_o moses_n but_o without_o this_o grace_n i_o must_v still_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o law_n itself_o will_v not_o general_o have_v any_o such_o effect_n upon_o you_o see_v as_o i_o say_v it_o will_v only_o awaken_v your_o conscience_n but_o not_o reform_v your_o practice_n so_o then_o to_o shut_v up_o this_o discourse_n this_o you_o must_v still_o conclude_v upon_o that_o whilst_o you_o continue_v subject_a to_o the_o law_n you_o will_v serve_v sin_n in_o your_o practice_n however_o you_o may_v disapprove_v it_o in_o your_o mind_n for_o i_o myself_o or_o the_o 〈◊〉_d same_o i_o under_o the_o law_n who_o with_o the_o mind_n as_o have_v be_v often_o observe_v serve_v in_o approve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n do_v yet_o with_o the_o flesh_n so_o long_o as_o it_o have_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o law_n to_o restrain_v it_o serve_v in_o practise_v the_o law_n of_o sin_n but_o to_o return_v to_o what_o i_o say_v vers_fw-la 5_o 6._o of_o the_o last_o chapter_n 1._o from_o whence_o we_o have_v hitherto_o divert_v to_o answer_v this_o objection_n i_o say_v have_v by_o this_o passage_n from_o subjection_n to_o the_o law_n to_o subjection_n unto_o christ_n upon_o the_o law_n be_v abolish_v change_v our_o service_n together_o with_o our_o subjection_n and_o become_v servant_n now_o not_o unto_o sin_n but_o unto_o christ_n all_o we_o christian_n be_v safe_a from_o that_o death_n which_o the_o law_n of_o the_o member_n bring_v forth_o fruit_n to_o chap._n 7._o vers_fw-la 5._o and_o have_v right_a to_o that_o eternal_a life_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n religion_n because_o they_o be_v such_o who_o have_v change_v their_o service_n together_o with_o their_o subjection_n and_o walk_v not_o now_o after_o the_o flesh_n as_o they_o do_v former_o whilst_o the_o law_n hold_v they_o in_o subjection_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n 2._o this_o change_n of_o service_n i_o say_v be_v wrought_v in_o all_o true_a christian_n by_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n although_o it_o can_v not_o general_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o jew_n by_o the_o bare_a law_n of_o moses_n for_o the_o law_n and_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n which_o be_v give_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o be_v express_o promise_v in_o his_o 11.13_o religion_n though_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n that_o enable_v spirit_n i_o say_v have_v make_v i_o christian_n free_a from_o the_o so_o often_o mention_v law_n of_o sin_n and_o from_o the_o punishment_n of_o it_o death_n for_o what_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n can_v not_o do_v towards_o our_o deliverance_n from_o the_o service_n of_o sin_n 3._o in_o that_o it_o be_v too_o weak_a through_o the_o overpower_a wickedness_n of_o the_o law_n of_o lust_n in_o the_o flesh_n even_o that_o have_v god_n do_v in_o send_v his_o own_o son_n jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o likeness_n of_o sinful_a flesh_n and_o in_o make_v he_o a_o 〈◊〉_d sacrifice_n for_o sin_n that_o in_o his_o death_n he_o may_v found_v his_o own_o religion_n whereby_o he_o have_v condemn_v and_o destroy_v what_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v overcome_v by_o viz._n the_o law_n of_o sin_n seat_v in_o the_o flesh._n so_o that_o by_o the_o help_n of_o christ_n law_n perfect_v what_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n want_v 4._o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v show_v to_o we_o and_o require_v of_o we_o in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n may_v be_v perform_v and_o fulfil_v in_o we_o christian_n although_o it_o be_v not_o ordinary_o in_o the_o bare_a jew_n because_o we_o be_v such_o who_o be_v christ_n subject_n must_v be_v his_o servant_n likewise_o and_o in_o our_o work_n and_o practice_n walk_v not_o after_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n thus_o have_v i_o give_v a_o paraphrase_n upon_o this_o involve_a and_o so_o much_o mistake_v chapter_n wherein_o i_o have_v large_o and_o as_o i_o hope_v true_o represent_v the_o apostle_n meaning_n his_o design_n and_o manner_n of_o argue_v in_o this_o place_n in_o all_o which_o we_o see_v he_o intend_v not_o at_o all_o to_o give_v a_o character_n of_o himself_o or_o of_o any_o other_o regenerate_v man_n but_o only_o of_o a_o middling_a sinner_n who_o sin_n against_o his_o conscience_n and_o transgress_v with_o reluctance_n which_o transgressor_n of_o a_o middle_a rank_n he_o particular_o represent_v under_o the_o person_n of_o a_o awake_v but_o as_o yet_o unregenerate_a jew_n who_o be_v one_o on_o who_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n have_v wrought_v some_o change_n but_o can_v not_o work_v enough_o be_v able_a only_o to_o awaken_v his_o conscience_n but_o not_o to_o reform_v his_o practice_n so_o that_o all_o that_o be_v there_o say_v in_o that_o seven_o chapter_n of_o willing_a but_o not_o perform_v etc._n etc._n only_o set_v off_o the_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n as_o to_o the_o make_v man_n complete_o obedient_a

slander_n and_o evil-speakings_a the_o strife_n and_o contention_n which_o be_v other_o man_n sin_n be_v his_o livelihood_n these_o sin_n be_v ever_o before_o they_o be_v always_o a_o snare_n to_o they_o for_o they_o be_v continual_o importune_v by_o they_o and_o it_o must_v be_v a_o toilsome_a pain_n and_o a_o uninterrupted_a watchfulness_n which_o can_v preserve_v they_o from_o be_v either_o habitual_o sour_a and_o fretful_a peevish_a and_o morose_a so_o that_o man_n very_a natural_a temper_n their_o age_n and_o condition_n prove_v many_o time_n a_o uninterrupted_a solicitation_n to_o some_o sin_n or_o other_o and_o they_o always_o fall_v by_o be_v always_o under_o the_o power_n of_o their_o temptation_n now_o when_o man_n find_v that_o some_o sin_n have_v get_v thus_o near_o to_o they_o and_o have_v take_v such_o deep_a root_n in_o their_o way_n of_o life_n nay_o in_o their_o very_a nature_n since_o they_o will_v not_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n to_o reform_v and_o amend_v they_o expect_v that_o god_n shall_v be_v so_o gracious_a as_o to_o dispense_v with_o they_o as_o for_o all_o the_o instance_n of_o this_o kind_n he_o must_v abate_v they_o see_v they_o will_v not_o be_v not_o our_o own_o but_o he_o who_o be_v please_v so_o to_o make_v use_n of_o we_o in_o he_o therefore_o the_o unlawful_a action_n be_v will_v and_o choose_v be_v real_o a_o sin_n and_o have_v soul_n as_o well_o as_o body_n it_o must_v come_v from_o the_o will_v within_o as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o body_n without_o and_o as_o for_o our_o will_n itself_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o it_o can_v never_o be_v make_v to_o choose_v involuntary_o by_o force_n since_o it_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o any_o forcible_a violence_n and_o compulsion_n but_o although_o those_o action_n which_o some_o as_o well_o as_o they_o be_v impower_v to_o command_v and_o govern_v other_o 1._o man_n will_n be_v subject_a to_o be_v violent_o act_v by_o their_o passion_n which_o hurry_v they_o on_o to_o consent_v to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v both_o without_o and_o against_o their_o habitual_a like_n and_o inclination_n when_o any_o passion_n be_v grow_v too_o strong_a for_o they_o although_o they_o be_v afraid_a to_o act_v that_o sin_n which_o it_o hale_v they_o to_o yet_o can_v they_o not_o withstand_v it_o for_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o member_n be_v of_o more_o force_n with_o that_o able_a to_o refuse_v it_o but_o they_o be_v overcome_v by_o it_o and_o yield_v at_o last_o to_o act_v it_o though_o unwilling_o and_o to_o fulfil_v it_o though_o with_o trouble_n and_o regret_n now_o here_o be_v a_o unwillingness_n it_o be_v true_a and_o thing_n be_v do_v which_o otherwise_o will_v not_o be_v do_v because_o the_o power_n of_o man_n lust_n and_o passion_n be_v so_o strong_a that_o their_o will_n can_v restrain_v they_o for_o all_o the_o interest_n which_o the_o contrary_a motive_n of_o reason_n and_o religion_n can_v make_v against_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o contend_v with_o they_o they_o can_v and_o do_v effect_v something_o indeed_o so_o as_o that_o the_o will_n when_o it_o do_v consent_n to_o they_o do_v it_o not_o full_o and_o free_o with_o perfect_a ease_n and_o pleasure_n but_o unwilling_o with_o fear_n and_o reluctance_n but_o yet_o that_o which_o they_o do_v be_v not_o enough_o for_o the_o other_o side_n prevail_v and_o the_o will_n be_v not_o able_a to_o hold_v out_o but_o yield_v at_o last_o to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n and_o to_o act_v the_o sin_n still_o but_o now_o although_o this_o be_v some_o sort_n of_o involuntariness_n yet_o be_v
