therefore_o their_o dependence_n upon_o god_n be_v irregular_a and_o deceitful_a god_n have_v no_o where_n engage_v to_o stand_v under_o such_o a_o trust_n but_o the_o contrary_a job_n 8.13_o 14_o 15._o sect._n 2_o and_o as_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o those_o under_o the_o old_a so_o be_v it_o likewise_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n with_o too_o many_o now_o under_o the_o new_a testament_n who_o because_o they_o have_v some_o knowledge_n and_o belief_n of_o god_n gracious_a intention_n to_o save_v sinner_n by_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n and_o the_o general_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o some_o know_a sin_n or_o other_o either_o covetousness_n or_o cruelty_n and_o hard_a heartednes_n or_o pride_n or_o uncleanness_n or_o intemperance_n in_o word_n or_o deed_n or_o some_o other_o sin_n and_o be_v unrenewed_a in_o will_n and_o affection_n or_o if_o there_o be_v any_o change_n it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o will_v turn_v the_o scale_n and_o give_v they_o in_o of_o the_o victory_n against_o the_o flesh_n on_o the_o spirit_n side_n but_o though_o there_o be_v so_o much_o light_n as_o that_o they_o can_v talk_v of_o good_a thing_n and_o so_o much_o conviction_n as_o in_o the_o general_a to_o approve_v of_o they_o yet_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o flesh_n clear_o carry_v it_o when_o thing_n come_v to_o be_v do_v and_o when_o temptation_n be_v upon_o they_o and_o the_o main_a reason_n i_o conceive_v why_o person_n upon_o their_o general_a belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v this_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n though_o otherwise_o they_o be_v as_o yet_o but_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o can_v please_v god_n rom._n 8.8_o be_v this_o because_o they_o be_v partial_a in_o the_o scripture_n and_o do_v not_o give_v one_o scripture_n as_o well_o as_o another_o room_n in_o their_o judgement_n and_o affection_n their_o mind_n run_v upon_o such_o scripture_n as_o declare_v christ_n jesus_n to_o have_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n that_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n that_o he_o that_o confess_v with_o his_o mouth_n the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o believe_v in_o his_o heart_n that_o god_n raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v save_v and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o far_o they_o do_v understand_v of_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o believe_v as_o have_v the_o substance_n of_o these_o other_o scripture_n work_v in_o the_o bowel_n of_o it_o which_o they_o must_v believe_v that_o will_v not_o deceive_v themselves_o in_o their_o faith_n and_o be_v there_o not_o the_o same_o reason_n to_o believe_v the_o one_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o do_v not_o the_o water_n of_o both_o sort_n of_o scripture_n proceed_v out_o of_o the_o same_o hole_n from_o the_o same_o fountain_n but_o now_o the_o carnal_a believer_n of_o who_o i_o speak_v fancy_v to_o themselves_o that_o the_o promise_n of_o salvation_n be_v make_v to_o believe_v indefinite_o not_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v tie_v up_o to_o that_o special_a kind_n of_o believe_v which_o work_v by_o love_n as_o other_o scripture_n interpret_v and_o they_o know_v in_o themselves_o that_o they_o do_v believe_v in_o one_o sense_n for_o so_o indeed_o they_o do_v with_o that_o general_a faith_n of_o assent_n thence_o they_o conclude_v confident_o that_o they_o be_v heir_n of_o promise_n and_o heir_n of_o salvation_n as_o well_o as_o any_o and_o do_v as_o very_o think_v they_o be_v go_v to_o heaven_n whereas_o indeed_o they_o be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o hell_n as_o ever_o the_o syrian_n think_v they_o be_v go_v to_o dothan_n while_o they_o be_v blind_o lead_v to_o samariah_n 2_o king_n 6.19_o sect._n 3_o the_o man_n of_o this_o formal_a and_o dead_a faith_n of_o which_o i_o speak_v that_o
have_v confidence_n of_o salvation_n because_o they_o believe_v though_o they_o do_v not_o indeed_o believe_v with_o that_o belief_n unto_o which_o salvation_n be_v promise_v do_v direct_o tread_v in_o the_o step_n of_o some_o in_o the_o apostle_n day_n who_o will_v needs_o be_v confident_a of_o salvation_n though_o all_o the_o faith_n they_o have_v be_v not_o of_o that_o power_n as_o to_o produce_v a_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o apostle_n know_v the_o danger_n of_o such_o a_o confidence_n labour_v exceed_o to_o take_v they_o off_o it_o and_o to_o build_v they_o upon_o a_o better_a bottom_n this_o be_v the_o business_n in_o which_o the_o apostle_n james_n labour_v so_o mighty_o in_o his_o epistle_n and_o we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v what_o disease_n be_v among_o the_o christian_n by_o the_o remedy_n which_o this_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n apply_v for_o their_o cure_n viz._n a_o inordinate_a love_n of_o the_o world_n which_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o adulterous_a and_o too_o near_o a_o compliance_n therewith_o chap._n 4._o beginning_n and_o thereupon_o they_o despise_v the_o poor_a saint_n and_o prefer_v man_n less_o worthy_a if_o they_o be_v rich_a chap._n 2._o their_o want_n of_o the_o true_a christian_n humility_n and_o love_n break_v out_o into_o bitter_a envy_v and_o strife_n and_o a_o undue_a judge_n and_o censure_v one_o of_o another_o chap._n 3._o throughout_o and_o yet_o for_o all_o these_o unchristian_a and_o unsaint-like_a deportment_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o glory_v as_o if_o they_o be_v the_o know_a man_n and_o man_n of_o the_o right_a religion_n wherein_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v have_v and_o that_o it_o do_v belong_v to_o they_o in_o opposition_n to_o which_o vain-confidence_n and_o confident_a boast_n he_o express_v himself_o thus_o chap._n 3.14_o 15._o but_o if_o you_o have_v bitter_a envy_v and_o strife_n in_o your_o heart_n glory_v not_o and_o lie_v not_o against_o the_o truth_n this_o wisdom_n descend_v not_o from_o above_o but_o be_v earthly_a sensual_a devilish_a for_o they_o to_o glory_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o of_o their_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v man_n of_o such_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n they_o do_v but_o lie_v against_o the_o truth_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o have_v on_o their_o side_n but_o indeed_o be_v point_n blank_a against_o they_o but_o if_o any_o man_n will_v approve_v himself_o a_o wise_a man_n indeed_o endue_v with_o the_o christian_n knowledge_n of_o the_o right_a kind_n the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o it_o must_v be_v by_o show_v out_o of_o a_o good_a conversation_n his_o work_n with_o meekness_n of_o wisdom_n v._o 13._o again_o chap._n 1.26_o he_o have_v likewise_o encounter_v that_o vain-confidence_n that_o be_v build_v upon_o a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n faith_n and_o profession_n without_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o it_o say_v if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v religious_a and_o bridle_v not_o his_o tongue_n but_o deceive_v his_o own_o heart_n this_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a man_n that_o shall_v give_v way_n to_o the_o flesh_n though_o but_o in_o one_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n a_o licentious_a liberty_n to_o the_o tongue_n not_o endeavour_v by_o watchfulness_n heed_n and_o circumspection_n to_o conform_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o forbid_v not_o only_o lie_v revile_v backbiting_a slander_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a communication_n but_o also_o foolish_a talk_n and_o jest_v yea_o every_o idle_a word_n how_o religious_a soever_o they_o may_v otherwise_o seem_v to_o themselves_o upon_o account_n of_o their_o formal_a knowledge_n and_o faith_n of_o external_a devotion_n to_o the_o ordinance_n yet_o the_o apostle_n testify_v as_o from_o the_o lord_n that_o such_o do_v but_o deceive_v their_o own_o heart_n befool_v themselves_o with_o a_o vain_a confidence_n of_o be_v religious_a man_n and_o of_o be_v accept_v with_o god_n as_o such_o and_o that_o such_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a that_o be_v as_o to_o the_o end_n for_o which_o the_o true_a religion_n serve_v not_o as_o if_o all_o their_o religion_n be_v make_v up_o of_o vain_a notion_n but_o though_o they_o have_v never_o so_o sound_a a_o knowledge_n and_o right_a belief_n of_o many_o excellent_a gospel-truth_n and_o though_o they_o add_v thereto_o the_o do_v of_o many_o thing_n yea_o how_o seem_o religious_a soever_o they_o be_v upon_o what_o account_n soever_o yet_o the_o want_n but_o of_o this_o one_o thing_n a_o care_n to_o bridle_v the_o tongue_n will_v render_v all_o a_o man_n religion_n and_o all_o his_o confidence_n of_o salvation_n build_v thereupon_o but_o vain_a &_o unprofitable_a touch_v the_o end_n of_o religion_n the_o end_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o have_v any_o religion_n nor_o seem_a show_n of_o it_o at_o all_o yet_o once_o more_o james_n 2.14_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n thus_o what_o do_v it_o profit_v my_o brethren_n though_o a_o man_n say_v he_o have_v faith_n and_o have_v not_o work_n can_v faith_n save_v he_o that_o be_v can_v such_o a_o faith_n save_o he_o a_o form_n of_o speech_n emphatical_o deny_v the_o thing_n interogated_a like_a unto_o that_o afterward_o chap._n 3.11_o 12._o do_v a_o fountain_n send_v forth_o at_o the_o same_o place_n sweet_a water_n and_o bitter_a can_v the_o figtree_n my_o brethren_n bear_v olive_n berry_n either_o a_o vine_n figgs_n why_o not_o it_o can_v no_o more_o can_v that_o faith_n save_v that_o have_v not_o of_o assent_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o chapter_n he_o clear_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n only_o there_o caution_n they_o not_o to_o yoke_v or_o couple_v their_o faith_n with_o a_o unchristian_a carriage_n assure_v they_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o his_o discourse_n throughout_o this_o chapter_n especial_o from_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n to_o the_o end_n that_o a_o faith_n so_o yoke_v and_o want_v its_o true_a yoke-fellow_n and_o companion_n the_o gospel_n conversation_n which_o he_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o work_n will_v not_o profit_v he_o that_o have_v it_o which_o unprofitableness_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o have_v not_o work_n he_o further_o illustrate_v by_o way_n of_o comparison_n verse_n 15_o 16._o if_o a_o brother_n or_o sister_n be_v naked_a or_o destitute_a of_o daily_a food_n and_o one_o of_o you_o say_v unto_o they_o depart_v in_o peace_n be_v you_o warm_v and_o fill_v notwithstanding_o you_o give_v they_o not_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a to_o the_o body_n what_o do_v it_o profit_n nothing_o at_o all_o that_o be_v to_o the_o fill_n or_o warm_v of_o the_o necessitous_a person_n even_o so_o say_v he_o for_o 17._o i'faith_o if_o it_o have_v nor_o work_n be_v dead_a be_v alone_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v give_v god_n christ_n never_o such_o good_a word_n though_o he_o shall_v be_v interest_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o a_o virtuous_a life_n answerable_a to_o such_o a_o profession_n &_o faith_n it_o will_v no_o more_o profit_n to_o the_o justification_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n than_o a_o parcel_n of_o good_a word_n will_v feed_v and_o cloth_n fill_v and_o warm_v the_o needy_a brother_n and_o indigent_a sister_n when_o a_o contribution_n of_o a_o real_a relief_n be_v want_v though_o i_o can_v speak_v with_o the_o tongue_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n and_o have_v all_o faith_n so_o that_o i_o can_v remove_v mountain_n and_o have_v not_o love_n it_o will_v profit_v i_o nothing_o 1_o cor._n 13.1_o 2._o and_o whereas_o he_o say_v that_o faith_n be_v dead_a be_v alone_o he_o plain_o suppose_v that_o faith_n may_v be_v alone_o without_o the_o company_n of_o work_n a_o faith_n that_o be_v true_o so_o in_o its_o kind_n a_o faith_n that_o be_v act_v on_o a_o right_a object_n but_o where_o ever_o it_o be_v alone_o there_o it_o be_v dead_a on_o himself_o thereabouts_o and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o their_o faith_n who_o have_v this_o power_n to_o be_v thus_o exercise_v and_o this_o i_o will_v show_v in_o live_v be_v through_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o operation_n of_o god_n who_o raise_v christ_n from_o the_o dead_a not_o through_o the_o operation_n of_o god_n simple_o but_o through_o the_o faith_n way_n to_o labour_v all_o you_o can_v to_o make_v they_o and_o the_o people_n they_o preach_v to_o one_o with_o you_o in_o the_o truth_n and_o to_o bring_v they_o under_o rule_n wherein_o upon_o good_a ground_n you_o apprehend_v disorder_n in_o their_o way_n but_o yet_o be_v sure_a you_o acknowledge_v their_o zeal_n to_o man_n salvation_n as_o a_o most_o worthy_a thing_n and_o honourable_a in_o they_o and_o great_o rejoice_v when_o you_o see_v the_o success_n of_o their_o faithful_a labour_n zeal_n and_o love_n in_o any_o man_n soul_n do_v not_o think_v but_o that_o god_n which_o the_o grammatical_a sense_n of_o the_o scripture_n yet_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a design_n of_o they_o whilst_o they_o themselves_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o sense_n of_o such_o a_o thing_n upon_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o consequent_o have_v not_o that_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n who_o keep_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o the_o high-minded_a and_o worldly-wise_a they_o must_v paul_n in_o his_o epistle_n exclude_v in_o the_o point_n of_o man_n justification_n before_o god_n romans_z 4.5_o but_o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v unto_o he_o for_o righteousness_n sect_n i_o not_o to_o meddle_v with_o the_o coherence_n of_o these_o word_n for_o the_o present_a because_o i_o shall_v have_v a_o fit_a occasion_n to_o touch_v that_o afterward_o you_o may_v easy_o perceive_v that_o they_o do_v in_o themselves_o contain_v a_o brief_a description_n of_o the_o man_n who_o god_n will_v less_o nor_o more_o in_o any_o man_n justification_n for_o otherwise_o paul_n though_o whilst_o he_o be_v a_o pharisee_n and_o to_o the_o very_a time_n of_o his_o believe_a be_v such_o a_o worker_n as_o that_o he_o can_v say_v that_o as_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n he_o be_v blameless_a phil._n 3.6_o yet_o this_o be_v no_o obstruction_n to_o his_o justification_n when_o he_o do_v believe_v indeed_o 2._o but_o the_o apostle_n meaning_n be_v that_o the_o absence_n of_o the_o work_v here_o speak_v of_o will_v not_o at_o all_o hinder_v a_o man_n justification_n in_o case_n some_o one_o sort_n or_o kind_n only_o for_o the_o resolution_n whereof_o we_o must_v consider_v upon_o what_o occasion_n these_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v here_o bring_v in_o and_o what_o people_n and_o what_o opinion_n they_o be_v against_o which_o he_o be_v here_o dispute_v the_o knowledge_n of_o which_o will_v be_v as_o a_o key_n to_o open_v the_o door_n of_o this_o text_n and_o
