in due time Christ died for the ungodly 6. For when we were worthless helpless lost and miserable in the fittest season Christ died even for the ungodly guilty Sinners to recover them to God and save them 7. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die 7. For among Men few or scarce any one would die for an Innocent Man though perhaps some few of rare Charity and self-denial would venture on death for a Man of eminent worth and goodness 8. But God commendeth his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us 8. But the love of God to us was so transcendently declared and magnified that while we were yet Sinners against his Law and him Christ died to reconcile and save us 2. Much more then being now justified by his blood we shall be saved from wrath through him 9. And if he loved us so far as to give his Son to die for us when we were meer guilty Sinners we may be sure that now he hath made and accepted us as Righteous pardoning all our Sin for the Sacrifice of the Blood of Christ he will certainly save us from Damnation 10. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son much more being reconciled we shall be saved by his life 10. For if God reconciled us to himself by his Sons death when we were his Enemies doubtless he will save them that are now reconciled and pardoned Believers by the Intercession of him that liveth in Glory and is now our Head the Lord of Life by giving us his Spirit and justifying us at last and receiving us to himself in Glory He that loved his Enemies will not damn his beloved Children 11. And not only so but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have received the atonement 11. And now moreover through this reconciliation by Christ which we have received upon our believing God is so far from being our terrifying avenging Judge that he is become our greatest glorying and joy he being our God and we his People and he being our Father and alsufficient Portion and Felicity 12. Wherefore as by one man sin entred into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned 12. In all this we have notice of this great Mystery that as Adam was the Root or first cause of Mans Sin and Death and by that one Man sin entred into the World and death by Sin and so all being Sinners death passed upon all even Temporal death actually and Eternal death by the Sentence of the Violated Law as being our due 13. For until the law sin was in the world but sin is not imputed where there is no law 14. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adams transgression who is the figure of him that was to come 13 14. For it is certain that Sin was in the World before Moses's Law even from Adam's fall And whereas that is no Sin nor imputed to Guilt and Punishment which is against no Law yet death reigning from Adam's fall till Moses and therefore all were under some Law Sin being so far imputed to them though they sinned not themselves as Adam did against an express particular command and penal threatning by supernatural Revelation from Heaven nor all that died e. g. Infants did actually and personally transgress Therefore it was from him as his vitiated guilty Seed that they derived Original Sin and by this vitious nature they at age sinned actually against that Law which they were under and by both were the Children of death so that we may compare Adam as the root of Sin and Death to all with Christ who is to all true Christians the root of Holiness and Life 15. But not as the offence so also is the free gift For if through the offence of one many be dead much more the grace of God and the gift by grace which is by one man Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many 15. But the disparity must be noted For if the sin of one Man had such malignant power and pernicious efficacy as to procure the guilt and death of many we may be sure that the Grace and Mercy of God and the gift of that saving Grace which is from the Merits Intercession and Spirit of Christ shall be more effectual to the Life of many 16. And not as it was by one that sinned so is the gift for the judgment was by one to condemnation but the free gift is of many offences unto justification 16. And there is this further differences that Adam one Man by one sin brought the Sentence of Death on all the World which had not passed else upon us But it is many Sins of many Men which Christ doth deliver us from in the free gift of our Justification 17. For if by one mans offence death reigned by one much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ 17. For if one offence of one Man made all Men Subjects to Death by that one much more powerfully and effectually they which receive from one Redeemer abundance of Grace and the gift of Righteousness in the healing and pardoning of all their Sins shall certainly Reign in the purchased and promised life of Glory by that one Saviour Jesus Christ 18. Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men to justification of life 18. Therefore as by the offence of one the Sentance of Death was passed upon all his posterity so also by the Righteousness of one as the meritorious and procuring cause the free gift came on all Men for Justification and Life That is A free Gift is made and offered promiscuously to all on condition of believing suitable acceptance and actually justifieth all to Life who so believingly accept it and unthankfully reject it not 19. For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous 19. For as by one Adam's disobedience all Men as receiving their Nature from him are made guilty and corrupt and punishable as Sinners so by the procuring meritorious Obedience of one in performing all that was required of him as our Redeemer in perfect holiness of Soul and Life fulfilling the Law of Innocency and of Moses and the peculiar Law of Mediation being obedient to the Death on the Cross shall the many that by Faith receive him be constituted Righteous and so accounted and judged of God even reconciled pardoned adopted and made the Heirs of Life 20. Moreover the law entred that the offence might abound but where sin abounded grace did much more abound

Now we know that what things soever the Law saith it saith to them who are under the law that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may become guilty before God 19. All this is written in the Jews Law and therefore is spoken to and of the Jews as well as others for the Law speaketh to none but those that are Subjects and obliged by it So that neither Jew nor Gentile can be justified as innocent but all such self-justifiers will be confuted and all the World proved guilty of Sin and Punishment before God when he shall judge them 20. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin 20. By all this therefore it is clear that seeing all that are under Moses's Law are Sinners against the Law and none are innocent no Flesh shall be justified in Gods sight by that Law For as they are Sinners so it is the Law which notifieth their Sin and condemneth them for it 21. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested being witnessed by the law and the prophets 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by the faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe for there is no difference 21. But there is another way of Righteousness ordained of God for our Justification and the Glory of his Grace and Justice without the keeping of Moses's Law or being justified by it 22. Even the Righteousness prescribed by God and given by his Grace which is by the way of Faith in Christ even our believing trust in him and adhering to him and this is prescribed and given to and found in all true Believers without difference 23. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God 24. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ 23 24. For all Men are Sinners and therefore have come short of obtaining the Glory which God had appointed to the Innocent that never brake his Law and cannot be saved or justified by the Law which they have broken but must be justified by his free Grace forgiving their sin and giving and accepting their sincere Faith and Repentance through the Redemption of lost Sinners which Jesus Christ hath wrought for them and in them 25. Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past through the forbearance of God 26. To declare I say at this time his righteousness that he might be just and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus 25 26. Whom God hath by his unsearchable Counsel Decree and Ordination set forth to be the great Reconciler and Propitiation by the way and means of Faith in his blood as a Propitiatory Sacrifice and the Seal of his Truth and Love and this was as well as by justifying the Innocent to demonstrate that he is a Holy Just and Merciful God and no friend to sin but a lo●er of Holiness and Truth in Pardoning to such Believers all their past Sins to which his forbearance and reprieve was a preparation I say to declare that he is as merciful so Just while he will have so precious a Sacrifice for Sin and by Pardon and Grace doth make and judge the Faithful Righteous which is it which is now fully declared by our preaching the Gospel 27. Where is boasting then It is excluded By what law of works Nay but by the law of faith 27. Grace therefore must have the Glory of our Justification For who can boast that he hath it by Innocency because he deserved not death by Sin No this is utterly shut out By what Law Is it by the Law of Moses or any Law which justifieth Men because they sinned not against it nor deserved death No but by another Law even the Law of Faith which Grace hath brought us under which pardoneth and saveth true Penitent Believers 28. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law 28. Therefore against the Jews and all self justiciaries we conclude that the Law of Moses much less the first Law of pure Innocency is so far from being necessary to the Gentiles for Justification and Salvation that no Man Jew or Gentile is otherwise justified by God but by his free Grace given through Jesus Christ to all true Believers who accept it as a free gift 29. Is he the God of the Jews only Is he not also of the Gentiles Yes of the Gentiles also 29. And how absurd is it to think that God is a God that is a merciful Governour to no more in the World than that little sorry People of the Jews Doth not his actual Mercies and his Government obliging all the World to the use of some means for Recovery Pardon and Salvation confute this and shew that he is the God and Merciful Governour also of the Gentiles 30. Seeing it is one God which shall justifie the circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith 30. It is the same God who will justifie Circumcised Believers and uncircumcised Believers by one and the same way Even by the way of Grace and
that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 37. The Corn which thou sowest hath not the Blade or Stalk and Ear and Flower and Chaff It is not formally but virtually or seminally the same whether it be Wheat or other Grain 38. But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 38. But out of this Seed and by its Seminal Vertue God by the addition of attracted Nutriment giveth it a Body with Straw Flowers Chaff and Seed as pleaseth him It being his Power and Will to which nothing is impossible which must satisfie our inquisitive Minds Resurrection as Generation being unsearchable to us 39. All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kind of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 39. But you must allow a difference of Bodies for even here there is much difference 40. There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terestrial is another 41. There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42. So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 40 41 42. The Celestial Bodies greatly differ from the Earthly Bodies and so do even the Celestial among themselves as the Sun from the Moon and one Star from another c. And so shall our Bodies at the Resurrection greatly differ from these that we have now particularly by being incorruptible 43. It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44. It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 43 44. It is now so vile a Body that it must rot and corrupt in darkness in the Earth but it shall rise in Glory It is buried in utter impotency like the common Earth but Gods Power shall raise it a Powerful Body It is buried like the Body of a Beast that was passive and only acted by the living Soul but it shall rise a Spiritual Body more suited to the Nature of the Soul and having also an active Nature like as Fire hath in it self Thare are Natural Bodies of Passive Matter in daily flux repaired by Food and acted only by other Natures or Souls And there are Spiritual Bodies either such as the Sun and Light hath or higher which are incorruptible and of themselves not inclined to death dissolution or change and besides the Soul are so like it that they are themselves Active Natures 45. And so it is written The first man Adam was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 45. That is The first Adam was made by God a living Soul put into a corruptible Body not having an unchangeable State in himself nor Power to make his Posterity such But the second Adam had in himself unchangeable Life suited to a spiritual glorious State and was the Root of such to his Believing Posterity enabled as the Lord of Life to rise himself ascend to Heaven and to raise them to Life and take them to himself and to make them a spiritual holy People capable thereof 46. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 46. But the Animal Person from whom by Generation we have but meer Nature was to us in causality before him that conveyeth to us Spiritual and Everlasting Life Our Nature derived from Adam was before the Reparation Spiritual Holiness Resurrection or Glory given by Christ even as Adam was before Christs own Incarnation and Resurrection Perfection is the last and ripe State of Gods Work in our Salvation 47. The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 47. Adam was made out of the Dust of the Passive Elements though God breathed into him a Living Soul yet Earth was his first abode But Christ is the Lord from Heaven his Divine Nature being there from everlasting assumed the Humane by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost 48. As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 48. And as Adam was a Natural Man and the Root of such so it is but Nature which we have from him And as Christ is Heavenly and Spiritual so will he make all the holy Seed to be like him Spiritual and Heavenly 49. And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 49. And as we are born of Adam Men as he was so we shall be made by Christ Spiritual and Heavenly as he is 50. Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 50. And this I tell you That these Bodies must not come to Heaven in the proper Form of Flesh and Blood nor can as such possess it for as such they are corruptible and cannot so inherit Heaven which is incorruptible 51. Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 51. And I will tell you that which is commonly unknown Though the Just shall not die that are alive at Christs coming they shall all be changed as well as those that rise from the Dead from being proper Flesh and Blood to have Spiritual Bodies 52. In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 52. In a moment Christs potent Call will be like a Trumpet calling Men together and the Dead shall be raised and living Saints changed into an incorruptible state 53. For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 53. For this mortal Body and Composition which is now corruptible by Dissolution must be changed into an incorruptible and immortal state of Being and Habitation 54. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written Death is swallowed up in victory 54. And Death being conquered by Christ being a Fruit of Sin from which he saveth us we shall die no more 55. O death where is thy sting O grave where is thy victory 56. The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 55. Though now Death seem to conquer us we triumph over it by Faith in Christ foreseeing our Resurrection being saved from Sin which is the Sting and the Penal Law or Curse which is Sins condemning Strength 57. But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our
ability and stairway took his Journey 14.15 Christ passing into the Heavens committeth to his Servants the Word means and mercies of his Grace that they may improve them till he come by Death and Judgment to call them to account Not giving the same degree of means and mercy to all but to some more and to some less 16. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same and made them other five talents 17. And likewise he that had received two he also gained other two 16.17 They that had the greater means and helps improved them to their own increase of Grace and the good of others and the service and honour of their Lord. 18. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth and hid his lords money 18. Note Tho the least helps should be answerably improved yet the less such as those have who have little more than the Light of Nature excite not men so powerfully to an improvement 19. After a long time the Lord of those servants cometh and reckoneth with them 19. Note Christ here intimateth that hiscoming to reckon with them would not be hasty 20. And lo he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents saying Lord thou deliveredst to me five talents behold I have gained besides them five talents more 20. I have used them to the increase of thy grace in me and to the good of men and to thy Glory 21. His Lord said to him Well done thou good and faithful servant thou hast been faithful over a few things I will make thee ruler over many things enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. 21. His Lord who freely gave him his talents to use yet rewarded his faithful usage of them and praised his fidelity saying I will give thee great things because thou hast well and faithfully used the smaller mercies of this life which I gave thee 22. He also that had received two talents came and said Lord thou deliveredst to me two talents behold I have gained two other talents besides them 23. His Lord said to him Well done thou good and faithful servant thou hast been faithful over a few things I will make the ruler over many things enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. 22 23. N. 1. The reward of Glory given for our diligent improvement of the mercies of this life is consistent with the freeness of the gift 2. God himself will praise the fidelity of his Servants as worthy of praise 3. Great rewards will crown the Faithful for little things here sincerely done 4. It is our Lords own joy that the faithful shall enter partake of 24. Then he which had received the one talent came and said Lord I knew thee that thou art an hard man reaping where thou hast not sown and gathering where thou hast not strewed 25. And I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the ground Lo there thou hast that is thine 24 25. The fear of thy severity made me think it safest to keep thy Money merely from being lost N. Hard thoughts of God makes men backward to his service which is a work of Love and sinful fear is an enemy to holy diligence and fruitfulness 26. His Lord answered and said to him Thou wicked and slothful servant thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not and gather where I have not strewed 27. Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers and then at my coming I should have received my own with usury 26 27. Note 1. God will take a slothful servant for a wicked servant unprofitableness and omission of duty is damnable unfaithfulness in us that are but Stewards and Servants To do no harm is a praise fit for a stone and not for a man 2. To confess Gods holy Government and yet to be unholy is to be self-condemning Qu. Doth this Text justifie usury Ans It speaketh of that sort of increase made by exchange and trading without reproof and with seeming approbation Gain by Trading and Merchandize is one sort of Usury all Usury is unlawful which is against Justice or Charity And all other is lawful and some that is a work of Charity is to some a duty 28. Take therefore the talent from him and give it to him which hath ten talents 29. For to every one that hath shall be given and he shall have abundance but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath 28 29. He shall be deprived of the mercies of this life who improved them not for a better life when he that so improved them shall have an abundant reward the mercies of this life and that to come 30. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth 30. N. 1. Omission and unprofitableness is damning sin 2. Hell is called Fire for pain and Darkness for uncomfortableness 31. When the Son of man shall come in his glory and all the holy angels with him then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory 32. And before him shall be gathered all nations and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats 33. And he shall set the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left 31 c. The coming of Christ shall be in Glory with all his holy Angels who served him here for the good of his Elect and as Judge he shall sit on his Throne of Glory And all persons and Nations shall be called by him to Judgment and he shall separate them as sheep and goats c. 34. Then shall the King say to them on his right hand Come ye blessed of my Father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world 34. Then Christ shall pronounce this sentence on the Faithful Come c. N. O comfortable words Come Whither To Christ to God to Heaven ye blessed of my Father sure such shall be blessed indeed inherit not only use the Kingdom in participation with the King of Glory prepared for you by eternal Love and Decree 35. For I was hungry and ye gave me meat I was thirsty and ye gave me drink I was a stranger and ye took me in 36. Naked and ye cloathed me I was sick and ye visited me I was in prison and ye came to me 35 36. N. 1. These works are noted as the effects of Faith and Love without which they would have been but dead works 2. The causal for signifieth not any merit by commutative Justice as giving God any benefit But their moral qualification and fitness to receive the Kingdom freely given but on such conditions that we signifie our thankful acceptance by true devotedness to Christ And thus all are judged that is finally justified or condemned according to their works as judged by the Law of Grace and Faith and not by Moses Law or that of Innocency
3. Love to Christ is not sincere if it will not cause us to prefer his interest in his poor Saints much more in the whole Church before our Ease Wealth and safety 37. Then shall the righteous answer him saying Lord when saw we thee hungry and fed thee when saw we thee thirsty and gave thee drink 38. When saw we thee a stranger and took thee in or naked and cloathed thee 39 Or When saw we thee sick or in prison and came unto thee 37 c. Christ doth more interest himself in his servants love and good works than they thought or can easily believe and valueth these more than we do our selves 40. And the King shall answer and say to them Verily I say to you in as much as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it to me 40. Note 1. Those poor and weak Christians which the proud despise and scorn Christ calleth his brethren 2. And he taketh that as done to him that is done to them for his sake 41. Then shall he say also to them on the left hand Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels 41. N. Every word unspeakably terrible The cursed state is to depart from Christ into everlasting fire with Devils who were first adjudged to it and draw the wicked to be their Companions in torments by following them in sin Wicked men are so like Devils that they must dwell with them for ever in misery 42 43. For I was hungry and ye gave me no meat I was thirsty and ye gave me no drink I was a stranger and ye took me not in naked and ye cloathed me not sick and in prison and ye visited me not 42 43. Note That it is not only hating hurting persecuting scorning or oppressing that men are damned for to hell fire with Devils but also not loving relieving and helping Christs servants for he trusted them with his gifts for that use and trial If these must be in hell with Devils where will oppressours persecutors and murderers be 44. Then shall they also answer him saying Lord when saw we thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to thee 44. Note Wicked men know not the greatness of their own sin nor how much that is against Christ which is against his servants 45. Then shall he answer them saying Verily I say to you in as much as ye did it not to one of the least of these ye did it not to me 45. N. The wicked shall suffer not only for hurting but for not helping the faithful as if it had been Christ himself that they neglected O what a motive is this to Charity Qu. Will it not be endless thus to convince and judge all the world Ans No though this be spoken after the manner of Men God can at once open every mans case to his own Conscience and judge all the world in a moment as the Sun doth at once enlighten all the eyes on earth 46. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment and the righteous into life eternal 46. The Execution shall presently follow the Sentence All that shewed not their faith in Christ and love to him by loving his servants above their worldly wealth and pleasure shall go to everlasting punishment with devils that deceived them And the faithful that loved Christ and his interest and servants above their fleshly interests shall go into endless life and blessedness But this doth not extend to comdemn Infants or poor unable persons for not doing what they could not nor to deprive them of a reward that had a will to do more than they were able CHAP. XXVI 1. ANd it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings he said to his disciples 2. Ye know that after two days is the passover and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified 1 2. N. Christ went not ignorantly or constrained to his death but willing and foreknowing it 3. Then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the People unto the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas 4. And consulted how they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him 5. But they said Not on the feast-day lest there be an uproar among the people 3 c. N. 1. The chief Men Priests and Rulers were the chief Murderers 2. It s a wonder that the people were not destroyed as Seditious Rebels rather than feared by such Rulers when they would have resisted or stoned them that had assaulted Christ or a Prophet 6. Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper 7. There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment and poured it on his head as he sat at meat 8. But when his disciples saw it they had indignation saying To what purpose is this wast 9. For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor 6 c. 1. It being usual at great feasts in the Country to anoint she signified by this her great love and honour to Christ 2. Judas was the chief murmurer but perhaps some others might object 10. When Jesus understood it he said unto them Why trouble ye the Woman for she hath wrought a good work on me 11. For ye have the poor always with you but me ye have not always 12. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body she did it to my burial 10 c. N. Tho works of Charity to the poor are highly esteemed by Christ and preferred before many rites and smaller matters yet some works of piety must be preferred before them And that duty may in its season be greater which is not so at another time 13. Verily I say to you Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole World there shall also this that this woman hath done be told for a memorial of her 13. N. 1. How highly Christ valueth the true love and costly piety of the meanest 2. Christ knew and decreed that the Gospel or History of his Life Death and Burial and Resurrection should be preached throughout the world yea and written to The words in Matth. 24. Let him that readeth understand seem to be Christs own words and to imply that all those his words should be written at least we may well answer them that ask Where did Christ Command them to write the Scripture that 1. His Spirit in them commanded it 2. Writing is but the most publike sort of Preaching 14. Then one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief Priests 15. And said to them what will ye give me and I will deliver him unto you And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver 16. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him 14 15 16. N. Christ knowingly permitted an Hypocrite in the

Malignants zeal fathereth even error and persecution on God 19. Then answered Jesus and said to them verily verily I say unto you The Son can do nothing of himself but what he seeth the Father do For what things soever he doth these also doth the Son likewise 19. I t●ll you by condemning my Works you condemn my Fathers also For I do nothing but what I know he doth and approveth and he doth them in and by me and I do nothing without him 20. For the Father loveth the Son and sheweth him all things that he doth and he will shew him greater things than these that ye may marvail 20. For the Fathers infinite Love communicateth to the Son that Wisdom and Power by which he doth all that the Father doth and by which you shall see greater things than these and wonder 21. For as the Father raiseth up the dead and quickneth them even so the Son quickneth whom he will 21. As the Father is the Lord of Life and giveth and restoreth life at his pleasure so also doth the Son 22. For the Father judgeth no man but hath comm●tted all Judgment to the Son 22. For the Father as meer Creator according to the Law of Innocency judgeth no man but hath given up the Government of this World to the Son as Redeemer to judg them as ransomed according to that Law and Measure of Grace which they are under 23. That all men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father who hath sent him 23. And so it is by honouring the Son that the Father will be honoured and by dishonouring him the Father is dishonoured 24. Verily verily I say to you He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me hath everlasting Life and shall not come into condemnation but is passed from death to life 24. I tell you if you hear my word obediently and shall believe on God the Father as sending me on the Office of a Saviour you shall have everlasting life by my Merits and Gift and shall not be condemned 25. Verily verily I say to you The hour is coming and now is when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live 25. I tell you that the hour is coming yea now is already come in which it shall appear that the Son of God hath the power of Life and Death Natural Spiritual and Eternal and that they that are dead in Sin and Unbelief shall hear his Gospel and be regenerate and made alive to God and that natural Life shall be restored by him to some Bodies at his own Resurrection and to all at last when he shall effectually call up all the dead to Judgment 26. For as the Father hath life in himself so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself 26. As the Father is essential underived self-●se communicating life to Creatures So is the Son as God and as Redeemer hath the power of giving Life from himself to the redeemed 27. And he hath given him Authority to execute Judgment also because he is the Son of God 27. And as Redeemer being the Son of God in his Divine Nature and his humane Nature advanced into personal Union with the Divine he hath Authority given him to Govern the World and according to the Law of Grace to do justice for the faithful and against the impenitent unbelievers 28. Marvel not at this for the hour is coming in which all that are in their Graves shall hear his Voice 29. And shall come forth They that have done good to the Resurrection of Life and they that have done evil to the Resurrection of Damnation 28 29. Let not this seem incredible to you For the hour is coming in which the Bodies now turned to dust shall by the Souls return be revived and hear his voice that calls them up And there shall be a Resurrection of the just and unjust They that have done good according to the tenor of that Law of Grace which they were under shall come forth to a life of happiness and they that have done evil violating the conditions of life in that Law to the Resurrection of damnation 30. I can of my own self do nothing As I hear so I judg and my judgment is just because I seek not my own will but the will of the Father who hath sent me 30. I am not to judge according to the weakness of humanity as Princes govern I do nothing but according to Divine infallible decree and appointment which I assuredly know And my judgment is just because I seek not my own humane will as my rule or end but the will of my Father who sent me that is my Rule and End 31. If I bear witness of my self my witness is not true 32. There is another that beareth witness of me and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true 31 32. If I had no testimony but my own word you were not to take it for credible truth But there is another who giveth you convincing evidences of his truth even my Father by his Voice from Heaven and by his Spirit and Works 33. He sent to John and he bare witness to the truth 34. But I receive not Testimony from Man But these things I say that ye might be saved 33.34 You sent to John and he told you of me as the Messiah I need not his or any mans testimony But it nearly concerneth your own safety to believe him 35. He was a burning and a shining light and ye were willing for a season to rejoyce in his light 35. God set him up to be as a burning and shining light to lead you out of darkness to the Kingdom of the Messiah which you expected And a while you gladly heard that news and were baptized by him Till you were told that I am he and then you turned back 36. But I have greater witness than that of John for the works which the Father hath given me to finish the same works that I do bear witness of me and that the Father hath sent me 36. N. For these works could not be done but by Gods power and will who will not be the worlds deceiver 37. And the Father himself who sent me hath born witness of me Ye have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his shape 38. And ye have not his word abiding in you For whom he hath sent him ye believe not 37 38. By a voice from Heaven God testified me to be his beloved Son But indeed you were not the persons that heard it For you
am in my Father and you in me and I in you 20. In that measure that this Spirit of Life is from me communicated to you ye shall Experimentally find that as I am in the Father and act by his Power so you are in me acted by my Love and Power and I in you thus acting you by my Spirit 21. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them he it is that loveth me and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father and I will love him and will manifest my self to him 21. This Holy Spirit which I promise you is the Spirit of Love And he that loveth and keepeth my Commandments is he that truly loveth me And though with a Love of benevolence and beneficence I Love many Enemies to their Conversions yet it is only they that thus Love me that shall be Loved of my Father with Complacence and Felicitation And I will delight bless and glorifie them with my Love and make my self fuller known to them 22. Judas saith unto him not Iscariot Lord how is it that thou wilt manifest thy self unto us and not unto the world 23. Jesus answered and said unto him If a man love me he will keep my words and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him 22 23. The manifestation of my self is not to be by Monarchical outward Pomp which the World expecteth but by Spiritual Gifts and Comforts and Rewards And none are prepared for these but they that love me and keep my words These my Father will Love and my Father and I will come to him by the Spirit and make our aboad with him for ever 24. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings and the word which you hear is not mine but the Fathers which sent me 24. But the World that Loveth me not keepeth not my words And it is the Fathers word and not mine only which they reject 25. These things have I spoken unto you being yet present with you 26. But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you 25 26. I tell you all these things with my own Mouth while I am present with you But they shall be better understood and take deeper rooting in your Memory and Affections by the work of the Paraclets the Holy Ghost whom my Father will send in my Name my Agent Advocate and Witness he shall more fully teach you all things and bring all things that ever I said to your remembrances that you may teach and record them to the World 27. Peace I leave with you my peace I give unto you not as the world giveth give I unto you Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid 27. And taking my farewell of you I do not only wish but give and leave with you my Grace and Benediction Not such an uneffectual or delusory peace in Sin as the World giveth But the beginning of everlasting Felicity Therefore let not your hearts be troubled or afraid at my departure as if ye were deserted 28. Ye have heard how I said unto you I go away and come again unto you If ye loved me ye would rejoyce because I said I go unto the Father for my Father is greater then I. 28. Ye have heard with trouble my words that I go away and come again to you If ye understood this aright your Love to me would make you rejoyce because as I told you it is my Father that I go to And he is greater than I whom he hath made Mediator And the presence of his Glory is better than this base wicked World 29. And now I have told you before it come to pass that when it is come to pass ye might believe 29. I have foretold you of my departure and my sending the Spirit that when it s come to pass your Faith may be helped by remembring my Predictions 30. Hereafter I will not talk much with you for the Prince of this world cometh and hath nothing in me 30. I shall not speak much more to 〈…〉 my death For the Devil the Prince of the 〈◊〉 and the Romish and Jewish Powers his Agents are ready to Execute what I came to suffer but shall find in me no guilt or desert of suffering 31. But that the world may know that I love the Father and as the Father gave me commandment even so I do Arise let us go hence 31. But that I may shew to Mankind that my Love to my Father and my perfect Obedience to his Commands are more Powerful in me than the love of this Life I shall willingly suffer for Man an undeserved cursed death Arise and let us go to the place where I know Judas will come to apprehend me CHAP. XV. I Am the vine and my Father is the husbandman 1. I am to you like the Vine that giveth forth her Vital juice for Mans life and delight And my Father is as the Husbandman that planteth owneth and disposeth of the Vine and Fruit. Note Whether Christ spake this before they rose from Supper or as they went by the way is uncertain 2. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away and every branch that bareth fruit he purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit 2. All that manifest themselves Christians and are Baptized and Grafted into my Church are to me as the Branches are to the Vine as to Cove●ant-insition And every 〈…〉 ●hristia● 〈◊〉 is not sincerely fruitful 〈…〉 superfluous branch And the sincere and fruitful shall be pruned by Instruction Discipline and Correction that they may be yet more fruitful 3. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you 4. Abide in me and I in you As the branch cannot bear fruit of it self except it abide in the vine no more can ye except ye abide in me 3 4. You are now in some measure cleansed and sanctified by my Word and Grace But do ye think that all your work is done or all your danger over it must be still your care to abide in me by continued Faith and Love and that I may abide in you by my Spirit and Grace For as the branch can bear no Fruit of it self but by vertue communicated from the Stock and therefore must abide in it No more can you except you abide in me 5. I am the vine ye are the branches He that abideth in me and I in him the same bringeth forth much fruit for without me ye can do nothing 5. Your ●●●tion and continuance in me must make you fruitful ●or out of me and without my communicated Spirit of Grace you can do nothing that will save you 6. If a man abide not in me he is cast forth as a branch and is withered and men gather them and cast them into the fire and
him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying 54. It is not my own testimony that I plead with you it is my Father that honoureth me whom you should believe because you call him your God But indeed you know him not and therefore understand not his testimony But I know him and should I deny his witness and say I know him not I should be a Liar like you But I know him and his word and keep it 56. Your father Abraham rejoyced to see my day and he saw it and was glad 56. Your Father Abraham joyfully believed the promise of the Messiah and so by Faith foresaw my coming and was glad 57. Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham 57. They understanding all carnally thought Christ spake like a distracted Fanatick 58. Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am 58. I tell you that before Abrahams days as I was from Eternity so in time I was the promised Messiah in whom Abraham in his days believed I am not so young as you imagine 59. Then took they up stones to cast at him But Jesus hid himself and went out of the Temple going thorow the midst of them and so passed by 59. At these words they took him for a Blasphemer and attempted to stone him to death But he some way hid himself and went out from among them N. That the last part of this Verse is of uncertain authority being not in some ancient Copies CHAP. IX 1. AND as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blind from his birth 2. And his Disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blind 2. Was it for any foreseen sin that he would after commit or for his original sin or for any sin of his Parents Or it is commonly held that all punishment is for sin How could that be in this man Not for his own sin for he had none besides his original sin Not for his Parents for God punisheth not one for anothers sin What then was it for N. 1. It 's improbable that Christs disciples thought that this Soul sinned in another body and Christ not reprove them 2. The Disciples knew that Adams sin and our Original pravity or our Parents sin might be punished with as great a punishment as blindness But they seemed to think that so miserable a punishment must be for some extroardinary sin which Christ denieth 3. Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor yet his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 3. N. Christ meant not to deny 1. That he had Original sin 2. Or his Parents had actual sin 3. Nor that these were a cause of his punishment 4. But it was none of these that was the differencing cause why this man was punished rather than others q.d. Though all punishment be for sin and this mans had such a common cause yet no sin was the reason why he was singled out for this suffering But God designed it for an advantage to glorifie him in the mans miraculous cure 4. I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 4. God in this man giveth me an opportunity to do the work for which he hath sent me for the sealing of the Gospel and convincing the World And I will take the opportunity for I shall shortly be gone hence And hereby I give you warning to work while you have day for the night is at hand when you shall on earth have time to work no more therefore take your present time 5. As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world 5. God who made me the light of the World will have me shine to it while I am here 6. When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay 7. And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which by interpretation is Sent. He went his way therefore and washed and came seeing 6 7. N. This dirty means was no more than no means as to the sufficienc● of Christs commanding power but he will have us use the unlikeliest means that we may be fit receivers 8. The neighbours therefore and they which before had seen him that he was blind said Is not this he that sate and begged 9. Some said This is he others said he is like him but he said I am he 8. They were struck with admiration and had much ado to believe that he was the same man till he himself told them that he was the man 10. Therefore said they unto him How were thine eyes opened 11. He answered and said a man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed mine eyes and said unto me Go to the pool of Siloam and wash and I went and washed and I received sight 12. Then said they unto him Where is he He said I know not 13. They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind 14. And it was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes 15. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight He said unto them He put clay upon mine eyes and I washed and do see 16. Therefore said some of the Pharisees This man is not of God because he keepeth not the Sabbath day Others said How can a man that is a sinner do such Miracles And there was a division among them 10. c. N. 1. They first attempted to disprove the matter of fact and when they could not do that they pretended Go is Law to prove him a bad man and consequently that it was not by God that he did his Miracles 2. They that will try the Spirits and Miracles by the Scripture must not misunderstand the Scripture 17. They say unto the blind man again What sayest thou of him that he hath opened thine eyes He said He is a Prophet 17. N. The benefit prepared the man to judg better than they It is a double sin if those should judg ill of Christ who have been delivered by him 18. But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received his sight until they had called the parents of him that had received his sight 19. And they asked them saying Is this your son who you say was born blind How then doth he now see 20. His parents answered them and said We know that this is our son and that he was born blind 21. But by what means he now seeth we know not or who hath opened his eyes we know not he is of age ask him he shall speak for himself 22. These words spake his parents because they feared the Jews for the Jews had agreed already
Christians come to hear and know what may be said they may yield and charge their minds 19. Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice and Cyprus and Antioch preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only 19. Note The calling of the Gentiles was not yet well understand by them 20. And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene which when they were come to Antioch spake unto the Grecians preaching the Lord Jesus 20. Note Whether by the Grecians be meant the Jews that speak Greek or Gentile Proselytes is doubtful 21. And the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed and turned unto the Lord. 21. God blessed their Ministry to the Conversion of a great number to Christianity 22. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the Church which was in Jerusalem and they sent forth Barnabas that he should go as far as Antioch 22. To confirm them and carry on the work 23. Who when he came and had seen the grace of God was glad and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24. For he was a good man and full of the holy Ghost and of faith and much people was added unto the Lord. 23. It rejoyced him to see what Gods Grace had done Note Every Goodman will be glad at the Conversion of Souls and the increase of the Church As Diabolists are grieved at it and fight against it 2. Young Converts need Counsel and Exhortation to be confirmed and persevere 3. Confirmation consisteth in a habitual fixed Resolution or full purpose to cleave to the Lord. 25. Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus for to seek Saul 26. And when he had found him he brought him unto Antioch And it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the Church and taught much people and the Disciples were called Christians first in Antioch 25. Barnabas having sought Saul and drawn him to Antioch for more publick service they two did for a whole year teach much People in the Church-Assembly which it seems was then but one And the Disciples were then first called Christians who before were called by Reprochers but Gallileans and Nazarites and since by Heresie and by hereticating reproaches are called by a multitude of dividing and disgraceful names 27. And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch 28. And there stood up one of them named Agabus and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar 28. In divers Countrys especially in Judea should be a death 29. Then the Disciples every man according to his ability determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea 30. Which also they did and sent it to the Elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul 29 30. The Famine being most in Judea the Country being dry and poor and having frequent Famines and many Converts to shew the power of Love having sold their Possessions heretofore for common use the Christians of other Countrys sent them relief by Paul and Barnabas to the Elders of the Church to be justly distributed as there was need Note Whether by Elders here be meant the unordained Seniors of the People Or the Presbyters ordained as such Or as Dr. Hamond thought Diocesane Bishops who yet had never a Presbyter under them and therefore were the single Pastors of single Congregations is sufficiently elswhere considered CHAP. XII Now about that time Herod the King stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church 2. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword 3. And because he saw it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter also Then were the days of unleavened bread 1. Note 1. Kings bear the Image of Gods Dominion and have their power from him and not against him and above all men are bound to serve him to the utmost Therefore such Persecutors as Herod being the greatest Traytors against God no doubt have answerable punishment in Hell 2. James that was one who sought to be Chief was the Chief or first of all the Apostles in Martyrdom and drank of Christs Cup and was Baptized with his Baptism 3. To please wicked men this King murdered Saints and displeased God 4. The Holy days of unleavened bread or Easter are celebrated with the Murder of Chrst first and of James after This the Hypocrites holyness 4. And when he had apprehended him he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of souldiers to keep him intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people 4 He set sixteen Soldiers to keep him that after the Passover he might Sacrifice him to the People 5. Peter therefore was kept in prison but prayer was made without ceasing of the Church unto God for him 5. The Church for so great a Minister in so great danger betook themselves to their great remedy even constant importunate Prayer to God 6. And when Herod would have brought him forth the same night Peter was sleeping between two souldiers bound with two chains and the keepers before the door kept the prison 6. Just when the Tyrant intended hi Execution c. Note Chains and Keepers are nothing to God 7. And behold the Angel of the Lord came upon him and a light shined in the prison and he smote Peter on the side and raised him up saying Arise up quickly And his chains fell off from his hands 7. Note O how Powerful are Gods invisible Agents in Comparison of Mortal worms 2. It was a gentle harmless stroak that the Angel gave him and such are Gods awakning stroaks 8. And the Angel said unto him Gird thy self and bind on thy sandals And so he did And he saith unto him Cast thy garment about thee and follow me 9. And he went out and followed him and wist not that it was true which was done by the Angel but thought he saw a vision 8. Note Implicite obedience by following Gods call even when we know not whither is acceptable and safe 10. When they were past the first and the second ward they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city which opened to them of his own accord and they went out and passed on through one street and forthwith the Angel departed from him 10. Note 1. Nothing can hold those that God will deliver 2. Angels are ministring Spirits for our good 11. And when Peter was come to himself he said Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his Angel and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews 11. Note We seldom understand what God is doing for us in the beginning of our deliverances as we do at last 12. And when he had considered the thing he came to the house of
become such as have need of milk and not of strong meat Note 1. Men ought to grow in knowledge according to the time they have to learn 2. Many after long Teaching are ignorant and must be taught again the same things which they have long ago heard 3. God's Oracles have Principles which must be first learnt 13. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness for he is a babe 14. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil 13 14. Milk is the dyet for Babes and plain things for young and dull Christians harder things will but hurt them These are for them that by long study and practice have got preparatory knowledge and a habit of quick clear and sound discerning Truth and Errour Good and Evil. Note 1. People must be taught but according to their capacity 2. Harder things in Divinity must be taught them that have learned the easier and are fit for them But by hard things is not meant unnecessary curiosities of humane Arts nor unprofitable words or triffling controversies But 1. A more clear distinct and satisfying knowledge of the Evidence of the truth and sense of the Essentials 2. A more orderly knowledge of their method and mutual dependance as one Systeme that as in a Table or Scheme we may set each member in its proper place 3. A more extensive knowledge of the useful consequences of the Essentials and Principles CHAP. VI. 1. THerefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ let us go on unto perfection not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith towards God 2. Of the doctrine of baptisms and of laying on of hands and of resurrection of the dead and of eternal judgment 1 2. Therefore supposing the Principles of Christian Doctrine I now pass over such discourse and will go to lead you to some additional knowledge belonging to the more perfect not now discoursing of these Principles as to men that have not received them I mean 1. Repentance and Conversion from a state of Death and from Infidelity and a wicked ungodly life 2. A lively belief and trust in God the Father Son and Holy Ghost 3. The preparatory Baptism of John and the Baptism of Christ which constituteth us professed Christian what profession is prerequisite in the Adult and what Covenant it solemnizeth what Duties it binds us to and what Benefits it delivereth and sealeth 4. The great Gift to Christ's Apostles and Ministers of Authoritative Imposition of hands by which the same Holy Ghost was given to others and Miracles wrought for the confirmation and propagation of the Christian Faith 5. The certainty of a Resurrection and future Life including the Immortality of Souls 6. The final Judgment which will sentence men to their everlasting state and use them accordingly 3. And this will we do if God permit 3. And so I will now pass to some additional further Truths by God's assistance 4. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightned and have tasted of the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the holy Ghost 5. And have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come 6. If they shall fall away to renew them again unto repentance seeing they crucifie to themselves the Son of God afresh put him to an open shame 4 5 6. I will not now go back to Preach Regeneration to you that profess to be already regenerate though you are tempted to Apostacy For it is impossible for those that were illuminated to believe in Christ and were baptized and have not only heard of the signal Gifts of the Holy Ghost from Heaven but have themselves had an experimental tast thereof and been themselves partakers of the Holy Ghost as well as seen his miraculous Gifts in the Church and have had an inward experimental tast of the truth and goodness of the Gospel and the powerful preparations and hopes of the World to come If they shall really lose all this and fall from the belief of Christianity to regenerate or renew these men again to saving Repentance seeing after believing Christ to be the Messiah they are turned to take him for a Deceiver and Blasphemer and consent to the pretended Justness of his Crucifixion and so expose him by slander to the same reproach as his Crucifiers did Note 1. That the Apostle speaketh of no other falling away but to Infidelity denying Jesus to be the Christ 2. That it is not Temptation to Unbelief nor a degree of Unbelief mixt with Faith or doubting that he speaketh of but a forsaking and renouncing Christ 3. He speaketh not of the meer denyal of the Tongue in a passion or fear but of the renouncing Christ by heart and tongue 4. He speaketh not of the act of a man in madness or melancholy who is not himself but of a man's deliberate act that hath free use of reason 5. He speaketh of no Infidels or total Apostates but those that had themselves been partakers of the signal Gifts of the Holy Ghost and were convinced by experimental gust of the Truth 6. Therefore it must be noted that not only truly holy persons but abundance if not the greatest part that did but so believe as to imbody with the Church had then one sort or other of these miraculous or rare Gifts for Confirmation of the Gospel which made Christ Matth. 7. bring in the workers of iniquity as wonder-workers in his name and Paul Gal. 3.3 4 5. appealeth to the quarrelsom Galatians which way they had the Spirit and Miracles 7. That this must needs be the same Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost which Christ pronounceth unpardonable For they who had not only seen the Miracles but had the Holy Ghost themselves for some such wonders could not doubt of the matter of fact whether such Miracles were extant or not So that there was no possible way for such to turn Infidels but by believing that this Witness of the Spirit of Miracles was a false deceiving Testimony of Satan and not God's Testimony And this was the Blasphemy against the Spirit Mat. 12. 8. That it is not all that is here meant that such are not to be absolved by the Church which ought but to fore-judge as God will judge as far as they can But that also such can never truly be regenerate and saved 9. The reason is because God giveth Faith by means and the Witness of the Spirits signal Gifts is the last means for proof that God will give them and they that after receiving this reject it by such Blasphemy are forsaken by the Grace of the Spirit whom they blasphemously renounce 10. Crucifying Christ afresh importeth charging him to deserve Crucifixion as guilty of the deceit and blasphemy for which he was crucified So that none that believe not the Spirit 's Miracles in fact
not that the outward act of washing the Body serveth to this Salvation nor must you think that God layeth it on any outward Ceremony save as it is the exercise of our Obedience and Faith But it is the faithful answer to God of a resolved Soul in the Covenant of Baptism who when asked doth profess and promise to believe in and give up it self to God the Father Son and Holy Ghost and to Renounce the World the Flesh and the Devil Baptism is but the celebration of this saving Covenant and it is covenanting sincerely that is the Condition of Salvation and Washing is but the sign 22. Who is gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him 22. And well may I say that Christ's Resurrection saveth sincere baptized Covenanters as God by the Ark did Noah c. when Christ thus risen is gone into Heaven advanced to the highest Authority and Honour all Angels and all Authorities and Powers in Heaven or Earth being made subject as his Enemies to their woe and his Servants to their joy shall shortly find so that he is fully able to give and do for us whatever he hath promised and we need CHAP. IV. 1. FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same mind for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 1 2. Let then the sufferings of Christ have their due effect on you in conforming you to his death that you may as crucified or dead men give over sinning being as dead to fleshly lusts that ye no longer live the rest of your time in the flesh according to the lusts of your selves or any tempting men but wholly live to the will of God as your Rule and End 3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 3. Alas we did too long live according to Heathen Sensuality and that time cannot be called back even in lasciviousness and lusts either fornication or immodesties that tend thereto and in excess of wine or strong drinks in revellings and banquettings or unnecessary feastings to gratifie fleshly appetite and lusts and in the bacchanals and jovialties of their Idolatry 4. Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 4. And though it is monstrous against humanity that reasonable men should thus live like brutes yet they stand and wonder at you as if you were the monsters or strange people because you will not be as bad and mad as they and run with them brutishly against God and Faith and Reason into this sensual excess of sports lust and riot 5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 5. But the time is near when for all this they must come to Judgment and a sad account they must shortly give to the Righteous Judge of all the World 6. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 6. But wonder not at their obloquy nor imitate them but look to the Example of the Martyrs and those that are dead in Christ who received and obeyed the Gospel preacht to them that while they were judged and persecu●ed in the flesh according to the rage of men they might live in the Spirit unto God and obtain his glory through all such suffering 7. But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 7. But the time of their foolish rage and of your patient suffering will be but short The end of all earthly things is near therefore let soberness be to you instead of lusts and revelling and fleshly pleasure and by watching and prayer seek and wait for grace and glory 8. And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for charity shall cover the multitude of sins 8. And above all things be sure that you have and carefully preserve and exercise not only peace and mutual forbearance but a special love yea fervent love to one another even to all Christians and specially in your Societies and Relations For as love covereth and not aggravateth faults towards one another so God who hath said Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy and if ye forgive you shall be forgiven will cover and forgive the many sins of sincere loving Christians Note 1. The two Extreams that in all Ages have torn the Church should have regarded these words of Peter 1. The Papal Church-tearers that persecute all that consent not to their Canons Forms and Shadows should have remembred above all things even above your pretended plea for Obedience to you and Decency and Order have fervent Love 2. And the passive Separatists that can find faults enough in the Orders and Forms and Ceremonies of Churches to separate from the Communion of almost all on Earth should have deeplier received such Texts as this above all your superstitious pretences to more purity of Churches and better Discipline have fervent Charity 3. It is but partiality and jealousie of the Cause of Justification against the Papists which maketh some excellent Expositors distort this Text so as to exclude from its sense God's covering of our sins because they consider not aright 1. That Pardon as continued and as renewed for daily renewed sins hath more for the condition of it required in us than the first Pardon and begun Justification hath The first act of sound Faith serveth for the beginning but the continuance of it with its necessary fruits is necessary to the continuance and renewing of Pardon 2. That the Faith which is required to Justification and Pardon is giving up our selves to God the Father Son and Holy Ghost in the Baptismal Covenant That is our Christianity which is not put in opposition to that Love or Repentance which is still implied as part of the same Covenant Consent or its necessary fruit but to the Works of the Law of Moses or of Works or any that are set in competition with Christ and Free Grace If prejudice hindred not men the reading of the Angel's words to Cornelius and of Christ's forgive and ye shall be forgiven and the Parable of the pardoned Debtor cast into Prison for not pardoning his Fellow-servant with Jam. 2. and Matth. 25. would end all this controversie 9. Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10. As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 9 10. As God hath
the Dominion of it and live in sincere and willing holy Obedience in the course of his Life may boast falsly that he is a Christian but indeed hath no true saving knowledge of Christ 7. Little children let no man deceive you he that doth righteousness is righteous even as he is righteous 7. Be not so childish as to be deceived by the vain words of any that pretend to be righteous before God on any account whatsoever while they live in Unrighteousness and predominant sin as if God would justifie the Wicked for their Opinions or Presumptions It is he that being called justified and sanctified by the Merits and Spirit of Christ doth live in a sincere Obedience to him and labours to be like him in Holiness and Love to God and Man whom God will call a righteous man and save him as such when he is Judge 8. He that committeth sin is of the devil for the devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 8. So far as any man sinneth so far he is of the Devil and like him and he is the Servant of the Devil in whom sin is predominant or that liveth in the love and practice of any sin not consistent with true hatred of it and Repentance and the predominant love and practice of holy Obedience And Christ will be no justifying Advocate or Judge of the Servants of the Devil though he may by making them just and holy turn them from the power of Satan to God and judge them just when he hath made them just both by Conversion and Pardon but not before For the Son of God came purposely into the World to destroy the Works of the Devil in all that he will save and not to call the Wicked Righteous 9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 9. He that is truly regenerate by the Spirit is made a hater and forsaker of sin and therefore doth not live in the ruling love or practice of it nor indeed commit any sin in that degree that he is sanctified much less live in wilful gross sin for God's Word and Spirit by which he was regenerate still abide in him And it is a Contradiction to say that at once he is a holy person born of God and yet liveth in reigning sin Note Cannot Here signifieth a Hypothetical Impossibility because 't is a Contradiction and not a natural Impossibility much less Impotency for it is sinning and not forbearing sin that signifieth Impotency And the Contradiction is only on Supposition that he continue sanctified 10. In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil whosoever doth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 10. It is not by proud Boasting nor barren Opinions that God's Children are known from the Children of the Devil but by the Image of God which Faith in Christ doth cause in his true Disciples He that doth not live in the true love and practice of Righteousness towards God and Man abhorring and avoiding Ungodliness Injustice and fleshly Lusts is no Child of God but of the Devil nor he that doth not unfeignedly love all Christians as Christians and men as men and live in Charity to them accordingly Note That wicked men are called The Children of the Devil because they are like him and do his Will And the World swarmeth with men so like to Devils in Lying Malignity and Mischiefs as maketh it easie to believe that there are Devils and a Hell 11. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning that we should love one another 11. For this is the Message which Christ the Lord of Love did commit to us and from the first we have preached to you that Love is the very ●●m and End of Law and Gospel 12. Not as Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother and wherefore slew he him because his own works were evil and his brother's righteous 12. That we be not like wicked Cain who was of the Diabolical Disposition and Practice and killed his own Brother And Why did he kill him Not for any ill desert nor for any harm that he had done him but because he was bad himself and his Works bad and his Brother 's Righteous and by difference condemned him Note Doubtless God permitted Adam's first Son to be wicked and murder his righteous Brother to shew the World what a state we are first in since the Fall by natural Pravity and that we are as such the Children of the Devil till Grace recover us and to expound the Enmity put between the Seed of the Woman and of the Serpent and to tell us what a War will be continued upon Earth from the days Cain and Ab●l till the End and that Superiority and Cruelty will usually be against the Righteous whose Victory is mostly by patient Suffering and Death 13. Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 13. If the ungodly Successors of Cain whose own Works are evil do hate Godliness and Conscience and hate you for them take it for no strange or unexpected thing It hath been so since Cain's days and will be so as Christ foretold 14. We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 14. Love being the great Work of God's Renewing Spirit on the Soul it is by Love especially to all true Christians that we know that we are changed from the Cainish corrupt state of Death into the state of holy Life Whatever else men have if they have not true love to others especially to godly Christians they are yet dead in sin Note 1. By The Brethren here is meant Christians as such Not only those of some Party in Opinion which we like nor only those that are friendly to us nor yet all men or all called Christians alike though all men must be loved as men It is to love God in man and man for his sake so far as God's Amiableness shineth in them specially to love God's Holiness in holy persons 2. It is not all Love to godly Christians as such that will prove us translated from Death to Life but to love them and God in them better than the Pleasures and Wealth of the World The cheap Love of such as wish men well but will be at no great cost or danger for any because they love their Money better is the Hypocrites Love 15. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 15. Note 1. How dreadful a Sentence this is against malignant or factious Haters of Brethren 2. But the Self-deceit of murderous Hypocrites is by taking Brethren for no Brethren but as the Papists first call them Hereticks
