a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. XXV 1 The sabbath of the seventh year 8 The jubile in the fiftieth year 14 Of Oppression 18 A blessing of obedience 23 The redemption of land 29 of houses 35 Compassion of the poor 39 The usage of bond-men 47 〈◊〉 redemptâ—on of servants ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them When ye come into the land which I give you then shall the land †Heb. rest keep * Ex. 23.10 a sabbath unto the LORD 3 Six years thou shalt sowe thy field and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard and gather in the fruit thereof 4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land a sabbath for the LORD thou shalt neither sowe thy field nor prune thy vineyard 5 That which groweth of it own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap neither gather the grapes †Heb. of thy seâ—aration of thy vine undressed for it is a year of rest unto the land 6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you for thee and for thy servant and for thy maid and for thy hired servant and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee 7 And for thy cattel and for the beast that are in thy land shall all the increase thereof be meat 8 ¶ And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee seven times seven years and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee fourty and nine years 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet †Heb. loud of sound of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh moneth in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof it shall be a jubile unto you and ye shall return every man unto his possession and ye shall return every man unto his family 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you ye shall not sowe neither reap that which groweth of it self in it nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed 12 For it is the jubile it shall be holy unto you ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour or buyest ought of thy neighbours hand ye shall not oppress one another 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another but thou shalt fear thy God For I am the LORD your God 18 ¶ Wherefore ye shall do my statutes and keep my judgements and do them and ye shall dwell in the land in safety 19 And the land shall yeeld her fruit and ye shall eat your fill and dwell therein in safety 20 And if ye shall say What shall we eat the seventh year behold we shall not sowe nor gather in our increase 21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year and it shall bring forth fruit for three years 22 And ye shall sowe the eighth year and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store 23 ¶ The land shall not be sold ‖ Or to be quite cut off †Heb. for cutting off for ever for the land is mine for ye are strangers and sojourners with me 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land 25 ¶ If thy brother be waxen poor and hath sold away some of his possession and if any of his kin come to redeem it then shall he redeem that which his brother sold 26 And if the man have none to redeem it and †Heb. his hand hath attained and found sufficiency himself be able to redeem it 27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it that he may return unto his possession 28 But if he be not able to restore it to him then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile and in the jubile it shall go out and he shall return unto his possession 29 And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold within a â—ull year may he redeem it 30 And if it be not redemed within the space of a full year then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations it shall not go out in the jubile 31 But the houses of

XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for †Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared †Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give

darkness and his name shall be covered with darkness 5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun nor known any thing this hath more rest then the other 6 ¶ Yea though he live a thousand years twice told yet hath he seen no good do not all go to one place 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth and yet the †Heb. soul appetite is not filled 8 For what hath the wise more then the fool what hath the poor that knoweth to walk before the living 9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes †Heb. then the walking of the soul then the wandring of the desire this is also vanity and vexatioâ— of spirit 10 That which hath been is named already and it is known that it is man neither may he contend with him that is mightier then he 11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity what is man the better 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life †Heb. the number of the days of the life of his vanity all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as * Ps 144.4 a shadow for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun CHAP. VII 1 Remedies against vanity are a good name 2 mortification 7 patients 11 wisdom 23 The difficulty of wisdom A * Prov. 25.30 22.1 Good name is better then precious ointment and the day of death then the day of ones birth 2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning then to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men and the living will lay it to his heart 3 ‖ Or Anger Sorrow is better then laughter for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth 5 * Prov. 13.18 15.31.32 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise then for a man to hear the song of fools 6 For as the †Heb. sound crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool this also is vanity 7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad * Deut. 16.19 and a gift destroyeth the heart 8 Better is the end of a thing then the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better then the proud in spirit 9 * Prov. 14.17 16.32 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools 10 Say not thou What is the cause that the former days were better then these for thou dost not enquire †Heb. out of wisdom wisely concerning this 11 ¶ Wisdom ‖ Or as good at an inheritance yea better too is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun 12 For wisdom is a †Heb. shadow defence and money is a defence but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it 13 Consider the work of God for * Ch. 1.15 who can make that straight which he hath made crooked 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful but in the day of adversity consider God also hath †Heb. made set the one over against the other to the end that man should finde nothing after him 15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness 16 Be not righteous overmuch neither make thyself over-wise why shouldest thou †Heb. be desolate destroy thy self 17 Be not overmuch wicked neither be thou foolish why shouldest thou die †Heb. not in thy time before thy time 18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this yea also from this withdraw not thine hand for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all 19 * Prov. 21.22 24.5 Chap. 9.16 Wisdom strengthneth the wise more then ten mighty men which are in the city 20 * 1 King 8 46. VIII 1 Kings are greatly to be respected 6 The divine providence is to be observed 12 It is better with the godly in adversity then with the wicked in prosperity 16 The work of God is unsearchable WHo is as the wise man and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing * Pr. 17.24 a mans wisdom maketh his face to shine and †Heb. the strength the boldness of his face shall be changed 2 I counsel thee to keep the kings commandment and that in regard of the oath of God 3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight stand not in an evil thing for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him 4 Where the word of a king is there is power and who may say unto him What doest thou 5 Whoso keepeth the commandment †Heb. shall know shall feel no evil thing and a wise mans heart discerneth both time and judgement 6 ¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgement therefore the misery of man is great upon him 7 For he knoweth not that which shall be for who can tell him ‖ Or how it shall be when it shall be 8 There is no man that hath power * Job 14.5 over the spirit to retain the spirit neither hath be power in the day of death and there is no ‖ Or easting off weapons discharge in

XI 1 Directions for charity 7 Death in life 9 and the day of judgement in the days of youth are to be thought on CAst thy bread †Heb. upon the face of the waters upon the waters for thou shalt finde it after * Deu. 15.10 Pr. 19.17 Mat. 10.42 many days 2 Give a portion to seven and also to eight for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth 3 If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth and if the tree fall toward the south or toward the north in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sowe and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with childe even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all 6 In the morning sowe thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether †Heb. shall be right shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good 7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun 8 But if a man live many years and rejoyce in them all yet let him remember the days of darkness for they shall be many All that cometh is vanity 9 ¶ Rejoyce O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thy heart and in the sight of thine eyes but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement 10 Therefore remove ‖ Or anger sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh for childhood and youth are vanity CHAP. XII 1 The Creatour is to be remembred in due time 8 The preachers care to edifie 13 The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity * Pr. 22.6 REmember now thy Creatour in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them 2 While the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkned not the clouds return after the rain 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and ‖ Or the grinders fail because they grinde little the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows be darkned 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets when the sound of the grinding is low and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of musick shall be brought sow 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high and fears shall be in the way and the almond-tree shall flourish and the grashopper shall be a burden and desire shall fail because man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets 6 Or ever the â—ilver cord be loosed or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern 7 * Gen. 3.19 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it 8 ¶ * Ch. 1.2 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher all is vanity 9 And ‖ Or the more wise the preacher was c. moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yea he gave good heed and sought out and * 1 Kin. 4.32 set in order many proverbs 10 The preacher sought to finde out †Heb. words of delight acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth 11 The words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastned by the masters of assemblies which are given from one shepherd 12 And further by these my son be admonished of making many books there is no end and much ‖ Or reading study is a weariness of the flesh 13 ¶ ‖ Or The end of the matter even all that hath-been heard is Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man 14 For * Ro. 2.16 14.20 2 Cor. â— 10 God shall bring every work into judgement with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil ¶ The SONG of SOLOMON CHAP. XI 2 The sock and quality of Mardocheus 6 He dreameth of two dragons coming forth to fight 10 and of a little fountain which became a great water IN the fourth year of the reign of Ptolomeus and Cleopatra Dositheus who said he was a priest and Levite and Ptolomeus his son brought this epistle of Phurim which they said was the same and that Lysimachus the son of Ptolomeus that was in Jerusalem had interpreted it 2 In the second year of the reign of Anaxerxes the great in the first day of the moneth Nisan Mardocheus the son of Jairus the son of Semei the son of Cisai of the tribe of Benjamin had a dream 3 Who was a Jew and dwelt in the city of Sula a great man being a servitour in the kings court 4 He was also one of the captives which Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon carried from Jerusalem with Jechonias king of Judea and this was his dream 5 Behold a noise of a tumult with thunder and earthquakes and uproar in the land 6 And behold two great dragons came forth ready to fight and their cry was great 7 And at their cry all nations were prepared to hattel that they might fight against the righteous people 8 And so a day of darkness and obscurity tribulation and anguish affliction and great uproar upon the earth 9 And the whole righteous nation was troubled fearing their own evils and were ready to perish 10 Then they cried unto God and upon their cry as it were from a little fountain was made a great floud even much water 11 The light and the sun rose up and the lowly were exalted and devoured the glorious 12 Now when Mardocheus who had seen this dream and what God had determined to do was awake he bare this dream in minde and until night by all means was desirous to know it CHAP. XII 2 The conspiracy of the two eunuchs is discovered by Mardocheus 5 for which he is entertained by the king and rewarded ANd Mardocheus took his rest in the court with Gabatha and Tharra the two eunuchs of the king and keepers of the palace 2 * Esth 2. â—1 6.2 And he heard their devices and searched out their purposes and learned that they were about to lay hands upon Artaxerxes the king and so he certified the king of them 3 Then the king examined the two eunuchs and after that they had confessed it they were strangled 4 And the king made a record of these things and Mardocheus also wrote thereof 5 So the king commanded Mardocheus to serve in the court and for this he rewarded him 6 Howbeit Aman the son of Amadathus the Agagite who was in great honour with the king sought to molest Mardocheus and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king CHAP. XIII 1 The copy of the kings letters to destroy the Jews 8 The prayer of Mardocheus for them THe copy of the letters was this Joseph Antâ—â— lib. 11. cap. 6. The great king Artaxerxes writeth these things to the princes and governours that are under him from India unto Ethiopia in an hundred and seven and twenty provinces 2 After that I became lord over many nations and had dominion over the whole world not lifted up with presumption of my authority but carrying my self alway with equity and mildness I purposed to settle my subjects continually in a quiet life and making my kingdom ‖ Or â—ildt peaceable and open for passage to the utmost coasts to renew peace which is desired of all men 3 Now when I asked my counsellours how this might be brought to pass Aman that excelled in wisdom among us and was approved for his constant good will and stedfast fidelity and had the honour of the second place in the kingdom 4 Declared unto us that in all nations throughout the world there was scattered a certain malicious people that had laws contrary to all nations and continually despised the commandments of kings so as the uniting of our kingdoms honourably intended by us cannot ‖ Or be settled go forward 5 Seeing then we understand that this people alone is continually in opposition unto all men differing in the strange manner of their laws and evil-affected to our state working all the mischief they can that our kingdom may not be firmly stablished 6 Therefore have we commanded that all they that are signified in writing unto you by Aman who is ordained over the affairs and is ‖ Or second from us next unto us shall all with their wives and children be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies without all mercy and pity the fourteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar of this present year 7 That they who of old and now also are malicious may in one day with violence go into the grave and so ever hereafter cause our affairs to be well settled and without trouble 8 Then Mardocheus thought upon all the works of the Lord and made his prayer unto him 9 Saying O Lord Lord the King Almighty for the whole world is in thy power and if thou hast appointed to save Israel there is no man that can gainsay thee 10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and all the wondrous things under the heaven 11 Thou art Lord of all things and there is no man that can resist thee which art the Lord. 12 Thou knowest all things and thou knowest Lord that it was neither in contempt nor pride nor for any desire of glory that I did not how down to proud Aman. 13 For I could have been content with good will for the salvation of Israel to kiss the soles of his feet 14 But I did this that I might not prefer the glory of man above the glory of God neither will I worship any but thee O God neither will I do it in pride 15 And now O Lord God and King spare thy people for their eyes are upon us to bring us to nought yea they desire to destroy the inheritance that hath been thine from the beginning 16 Despise not the portion which thou hast delivered out of Egypt for thine own self 17 Hear my prayer and be merciful unto thine inheritance turn our sorrow into joy that we may live O Lord and praise thy name and ‖ Or â—â—ut or stop not destroy not the mouths of them that praise thee O Lord. 18 All Israel in like manner cried most †Gr. mightily earnestly unto the Lord because their death was before their eyes CHAP. XXXVI 1 A prayer for the church against the enemies thereof 18 A good heart and a froward 21 Of a good wife HAve mercy upon us O Lord God of all and behold us 2 And send thy fear upon all the nations that seek not after thee 3 * Jer. 10.25 Lift up thy hand ‖ Or upon against the strange nations and let them see thy power 4 As thou wast sanctified in us before them so be thou magnified among them before us 5 And let them know thee as we have known thee that there is no God but onely thou O God 6 Shew new signs and make other strange wonders glorify thy hand and thy right arm that they may set forth thy wondrous works 7 Raise up indignation and pour out wrath take away the adversary and destroy the enemy 8 Make the time short remember the †Gr. oath covenant and let them declare thy wonderful works 9 Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire and let them perish that oppress the people 10 Smite in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen that say There is none other but we 11 Gather all the tribes of Jacob together and inherit thou them as from the beginning 12 O Lord have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name and upon Israel * Exod. 4.22 whom thou hast named thy first-born 13 O be merciful unto Jerusalem thy holy city the place of thy rest 14 Fill Sion ‖ Or. that it may magnify thine oracles with thine unspeakable oracles and thy people with thy glory 15 Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning and raise up ‖ Or. prophesies prophets that have been in thy name 16 Reward them that wait for thee and let thy prophets be found faithful 17 O Lord hear the prayer of thy ‖ Or supplients servants according to the * Num. 6.23 blessing of Aaron over thy people that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that thou art the Lord the eternal God 18 The belly devoureth all meats yet is one meat better then another 19 * Job 34.3 As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison so doth an heart of understanding false speeches 20 A froward heart causeth heaviness but a man of experience will recompense him 21 A woman will receive every man yet is one daughter better then another 22 The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance and a man loveth nothing better 23 If there be kindness meekness and comfort in her tongue then is not her husband like ‖ Or common other men 24 He that getteth a wife beginneth ‖ Or to thrive a possession a help like unto himself and a pillar of rest 25 Where no hedge is there the possession is spoiled and he that hath no wife will wander up and down mourning 26 Who will trust a thief well-appointed that skippeth from city to city so who will beleeve a man that hath no house and lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18
the love of wisdom is above them both 21 The pipe and the psaltery make sweet melody but a pleasant tongue is above them both 22 Thine eye desireth favour and beauty but more then both corn while it is green 23 A friend and companion never meet amiss but above both is a wife with her husband 24 Brethren and help are against time of trouble but alms shall deliver more then them both 25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure but counsel is esteemed above them both 26 Riches and strength lift up the heart but the fear of the Lord is above them both there is no want in the fear of the Lord and it needeth not to seek help 27 The fear of the Lord is ‖ Or a garden that is blessed a fruitful garden and * Isa 4.5 covereth him above all glory 28 My son lead not a beggars life for better it is to die then to beg 29 The life of him that dependeth on another mans table is not to be counted for a life for he polluteth himself with other mens meat but a wise man well-nurtured will beware thereof 30 Begging is sweet in the mouth of the shameless but in his belly there shall burn a fire CHAP. XLI 1 The remembrance of death 3 Death is not to be feared 5 The ungodly shall be accursed 11 Of an evil and a good name 14 Wisdom is to be uttered 16 Of what things we should be ashamed O Death how bitter is the remembrance of thee to a man that liveth at rest in his possessions unto the man that hath nothing to vex him and that hath prosperity in all things yea unto him that is yet able to receive meat 2 O death acceptable is thy sentence unto the needy and unto him whose strength faileth that is now in the last age and ‖ Or to whom every thing 〈◊〉 troublesenâ—â— is vexed with all things and to him that despaireth and hath lost patience 3 Fear not the sentence of death remember them that have been before thee and that come after for this is the sentence of the Lord over all flesh 4 And why art thou against the pleasure of the most High there is no inquisition in the grave whether thou have lived ten or an hundred or a thousand years 5 The children of sinners are abominable children and they that are conversant in the dwelling of the ungodly 6 The inheritance of sinners children shall perish and their posterity shall have a perpetual reproach 7 The children will complain of an ungodly father because they shall be reproached for his sake 8 Wo be unto you ungodly men which have forsaken the law of the most High God for if you increase it shall be to your destruction 9 And if you be born you shall be born to a curse and if you die a curse shall be your portion 10 * Chap. â—0 11 All that are of the earth shall turn to earth again so the ungodly shall go from a curse to destruction 11 The mourning of men is about their bodies but an ill name of sinners shall be blotted out 12 Have regard to thy name for that shall continue with thee above a thousand great treasures of gold 13 A good life hath but few days but a good name endureth for ever 14 My children keep discipline in peace for wisdom that is hid and a treasure that is not seen what profit is in them both 15 A man that hideth his foolishness is better then a man that hideth his wisdom 16 Therefore be shamefac'd according to my word for it is not good to retain all shamefac'dness neither is it altogether approved in every thing 17 Be ashamed of whoredom before father and mother and of a lie before a prince and a mighty man 18 Of an offence before a judge and ruler of iniquity before a congregation and people of unjust dealing before thy partner and friend 19 And of theft in regard of the place where thou sojournest and in regard of the truth of God and his covenant and to lean with thine elbow upon the meat and of scorning to give and take 20 And of silence before them that salute thee and to look upon an harlot 21 And to turn away thy face from thy kinsman or to take away a portion or a gift or to gaze upon another mans wife 22 Or to be over-busie with his maid and come not near her bed or of upbraiding speeches before friends and after thou had given upbraid not 23 Or of iterating and speaking again that which thou hast heard and of revealing of secrets 24 So shalt thou be truly shamefac'd and finde favour before all men CHAP. XLII 1 Whereof we should not be ashamed 9 Be careful of thy daughter 12 Beware of a woman 15 The works and greatness of God OF these things be not thou ashamed and accept no person to sin thereby 2 Of the law of the most High and his covenant and of judgement to justifie the ungodly 3 ‖ Or Of thy partners speech Of reckoning with thy partners and ‖ Or companions travellers or ‖ Or of the giving of the gift of the heritage of friends 4 Of exactness of balance and weights or of getting much or little 5 And of merchants ‖ Or without profit indifferent selling of much correction of children and to make the side of an evil servant to bleed 6 Sure keeping is good where an evil wife is and shut up where many hands are 7 Deliver all things in number and weight and put all in writing that thou ‖ Or dealest for givest out or receivest in 8 Be not ashamed to ‖ Or rebuke inform the unwise and foolish and the extreme aged ‖ Or that is accused of fornication that contendeth with those that are young thus shalt thou be truly learned and approved of all men living 9 The father waketh for the daughter when no man knoweth and the care for her taketh away sleep when she is young lest she pass away the flower of her age and being married lest she should be hated 10 In her virginity lest she should be defiled and gotten with childe in her fathers house and having an husband lest she should misbehave her self and when she is married lest she should be barren 11 Keep a sure watch over a shameless daughter lest she make thee a laughing stock to thine enemies and a by-word in the city and a reproach among the people and make thee ashamed before the multitude 12 Behold not every bodies * Chap. 25.21 beauty and sit not in the midst of women 13 For from garments cometh a moth and * Gen. 3.6 from women wickedness 14 Better is the ‖ Or wickedness churlishness of a man then a courteous woman a woman I say which bringeth shame and reproach 15 I will now remember the works of the Lord and declare the things that I have seen
9.12 Psa 34.29 that the scripture should be fulfilled A bone of him shall not be broken 37 And again another scripture saith * Zec. 12.10 They shall look on him whom they pierced 38 ¶ * Mat. 27.57 And after this Joseph of Arimathea being a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus and Pilate gave him leave He came therefore and took the body of Jesus 39 And there came also Nicodemus which at the first came to Jesus by night and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes about an hundred pound weight 40 Then took they the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices as the manner of the Jews is to bury 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new sepulchre wherein was never man yet laid 42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews preparation day for the sepulchre was night at hand CHAP. XX. 1 Mary cometh to the sepulchre 3 so do Peter and John ignorant of the resurrection 11 Jesus appeareth to Mary Magdalene 19 and to his disciples 24 The incredulity and confession of Thomas 30 The scripture is sufficient to salvation THe * Mat. 28.1 Mar. 16.1 first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early when it was yet dark unto the sepulchre and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre 2 Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter and to the * Chr. 13.23 21.20 other disciple whom Jesus loved and saith unto them They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre and we know not where they have laid him 3 Peter therefore went forth and that other disciple and came to the sepulchre 4 So they ran both together and the other disciple did outrun Peter and came first to the sepulchre 5 And he stooping down and looking in saw the linen clothes lying yet went he not in 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him and went into the sepulchre and seeth the linen clothes lie 7 And the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes but wrapped together in a place by it self 8 Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre and he saw and beleeved 9 For as yet they knew not the scripture that he must rise again from the dead 10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home 11 ¶ But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting the one at the head and the other at the feet where the body of Jesus had layen 13 And they say unto her Woman why weepest thou She saith unto them Because they have taken away my Lord and I know not where they have said him 14 And when she had thus said she turned her self back and saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus 15 Jesus saith unto her Woman why weepest thou whom seekest thou she supposing him to be the gardener saith unto him Sir if thou have born him hence tell me where thou hast â—aid him and I will take him away 16 Jesus saith unto her Mary She turned her self and saith unto him Rabboni which is to say Master 17 Jesus saith unto her Touch me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father but go to my brethren and say unto them I ascend unto my Father and your Father and to my God and your God 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had spoken these things unto her 19 ¶ * Mar. 16.14 Then the same day at evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews came Jesus and stood in the midst and saith unto them Peace be unto you 20 And when he had so said he shewed unto them his hands and his side Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again Peace be unto you as my Father hath sent me even so send I you 22 And when he had said this he breathed on them and saith unto them Receive ye the holy Ghost 23 * Mat. 18.18 Whos 's soever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them and whose soever sins ye retain they are retained 24 ¶ But Thomas one of the twelve called Didymus was not with them when Jesus came 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side I will not beleeve 26 ¶ And after eight days again his disciples were within and Thomas with them then came Jesus the doors being shut and stood in the midst and said Peace be unto you 27 Then saith he to Thomas Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side and be not faithless but beleeving 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him My Lord and my God 29 Jesus saith unto him Thomas because thou hast seen me thou hast beleeved blessed are they that have not seen and yet have beleeved 30 ¶ * Chap. 21.25 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book 31 But these are written that ye might beleeve that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that beleeving ye might have life through his name CHAP. XXI 1 christ appearing again to his disciples was known of them by the great draught of fishes 12 He dineth with them 15 earnestly commandeth Peter to seed his lambs and sheep 18 foretelleth him of his death 32 rebuketh his curiosity touching John 25 The conclusion AFter these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias and on this wife shewed he himself 2 There were together Simon Peter and Thomas called Didymus and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two other of his disciples 3 Simon Peter saith unto them I go a fishing They say unto him We also go with thee They went forth and entred into a ship immediately and that night they caught nothing 4 But when the morning was now come Jesus stood on the shore but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus 5 Then Jesus saith unto them ‖ Or Sâ—rs Children have ye any meat They answered him No. 6 And he said unto them Cast the net on the right side of the ship and ye shall finde They cast therefore and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter It is the Lord. Now when Simon
offended any thing at all 9 But Festus willing to do the Jews a pleasure answered Paul and said Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem and there be judged of these things before me 10 Then said Paul I stand at Cesars judgement-seat where I ought to be judged to the Jews have I done no wrong as thou very well knowest 11 For if I be an offender or have committed any thing worthy of death I refuse not to die but if there he none of these things whereof these accuse me no man may deliver me unto them I appeal unto Cesar 12 Then Festus when he had conferred with the council answered Hast thou appealed unto Cesar unto Cesar shalt thou go 13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cesarea to salute Festus 14 And when they had been there many days Festus declared Pauls cause unto the king saying There is a certain man lest in bonds by Felix 15 About whom when I was at Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews enformed me desiring to have judgement against him 16 To whom I answered It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face and have license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him 17 Therefore when they were come hither without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgement-seat and I commanded the man to be brought forth 18 Against whom when the accusers stood up they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed 19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition and of one Jesus which was dead whom Paul affirmed to be alive 20 And because ‖ Or I was doubtful how to enquire hereof I doubted of such manner of questions I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem there be judged of these matters 21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the ‖ Or judgement hearing of Augustus I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cesar 22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus I would also hear the man my felt To morrow said he thou shalt hear him 23 And on the morrow when Agrippa was come and Bernice with great pomp and was entred into the place of hearing with the chief captains and principal men of the city at Festus commandment Paul was brought forth 24 And Festus said King Agrippa and all men which are here present with us ye see this man about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me both at Jerusalem and also here crying that he ought not to live any longer 25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus I have determined to send him 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord Wherefore I have brought him forth before you and specially before thee O king Agrippa that after examination had I might have somewhat to write 27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not withal to signifie the crimes laid against him CHAP. XXVI 2 Paul in the presence of Agrippa deelareth his life from his childhood 12 and how miraculously he was converted and called to his apostleship 24 Festus chargeth him to be mad whereunto he answereth modestly 28 Agrippa is almost perswaded to be a Christian 31 The whole company pronounce him innocent THen Agrippa said unto Paul Thou art permitted to speak for thy self Then Paul stretched forth the hand and answered for himself 2 I think my self happy king Agrippa because I shall answer for my self this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently 4 My manner of life from my youth which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem know all the Jews 5 Which knew me from the beginning if they would testifie that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes instantly serving God day and night hope to come for which hopes sake king Agrippa I am accused of the Jews 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you that God should raise the dead 9 I verily thought with my self that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth 10 * Chap. 8.3 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem and many of the saints did I shut up in prison having received authority from the chief priests and when they were put to death I gave my voice against them 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme and being exceedingly mad against them I persecuted them even unto strange cities 12 * Chap 9.2 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests 13 At midday O king I saw in the way a light from heaven above the brightness of the sun shining round about me and them which journeyed with me 14 And when we were all faln to the earth I heard a voice speaking unto me and saying in the Hebrew tongue Saul Saul why persecutest thou me It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks 15 And I said Who art thou Lord And he said I am Jesus whom thou persecutest 16 But rise and stand upon thy feet for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee 17 Delivering thee from the people and from the Gentiles unto whom now I send thee 18 To open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by saith that is in me 19 Whereupon O king Agrippa I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God and do works meet for repentance 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple and went about to kill me 22 Having therefore obtained help of God I continue unto this day witnessing both to small and great saying none other things then those which the prophets and Moses did say should come 23 That Christ should suffer and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead and should shew light unto the people and to the Gentiles 24 And as he thus spake for himself Festus said with a loud
the earth and such as are in the sea and all that are in them heard I saying Blessing and honour and glory and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb for ever and ever 14 And the four beasts said Amen And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever CHAP. VI. 1 The opening of the seals in order and what followed thereupon containing a prophesie to the end of the world ANd I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals and I heard as it were the noise of thunder one of the four beasts saying Come see 2 And I saw and behold a white horse and he that sat on him had a howe and a crown was given unto him and he went forth conquering and to conquer 3 And when he had opened the second seal I heard the second beast say Come and see 4 And there went out another horse that was red and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth and that they should kill one another and there was given unto him a great sword 5 And when he had opened the third seal I heard the third beast say Come and see And I beheld and so a black horse and he that sat on him had a pair of ballances in his hand 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say ‖ The word choenix signifieth a measure containing one wine-quart and the twelfth part of a quart A measure of wheat for a peny and three measures of barley for a peny and see thou hurt not the oyl and the wine 7 And when he had opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth beast say Come and see 8 And I looked and behold a pale horse and his name that sat on him was Death and hell followed with him and power was given ‖ Or to him unto them over the fourth part of the earth to kill with sword and with hunger and with death and with the beasts of the earth 9 And when he had opened the fifth seal I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held 10 And they cried with a loud voice saying How long O Lord holy and true dost thou not judge and avenge our bloud on them that dwell on the earth 11 And white robes were given unto every one of them and it was said unto them that they should rest yet for a little season until their fellow-servants also and their brethren that should be killed as they were should be fulfilled 12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal and lo there was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became as bloud 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth even as a fig tree casteth her ‖ Or. â—â—un figs. untimely figs when she is shaken of a mighty wind 14 * Isa 34.4 And the heaven departed as a scrowl when it is rolled together and every mountain and island were moved out of their places 15 And the kings of the earth and the great men and the rich men and the chief captains and the mighty men and every bond man and every free-man * Isa 2.19 hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains 16 * Hos 10.8 Luke 23.30 And said to the mountains and rocks Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb 17 For the great day of his wrath is come and who shall be able to stand CHAP. VII 3 An angel sealeth the servants of God in their foreheads 4 The number of them that were sealed of the tribes of Israel a certain number 9 of all other nations an innumerable multitude which stand before the throne clad in white robes and palms in their hands 14 Their robes were washed in the bloud of the Lamb. ANd after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth holding the four winds of the earth that the wind should not blow on the earth nor on the sea nor on any tree 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east having the seal of the living God and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea 3 Saying Hurt not the earth neither the seâ— nor the trees till we have * Ezâ—â— 9.4 sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed and there were sealed an hundred and fourty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel 5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand 6 Of the tribe of A set were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand 7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Isachar were sealed twelve thousand 8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand 9 After this I beheld and lo a great multitude which no man could number of all nations and kindreds and people and tongues stood before the throne and before the Lamb clothed with white robes and palms in their hands 10 And cried with a loud voice saying Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne and about the elders and the four beasts and fell before the throne on their faces and worshipped God 12 Saying A men Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be unto our God for ever and ever Amen 13 And one of the elders answered saying unto me What are these which are arayed in white robes and whence came they 14 And I said unto him Sir Thou knowest And he said to me These are they which came out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and made them white in the bloud of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple and he that sitteth on the throne shall * Chap. 21.3 dwell among them 16 * Isa 49.10 They shall hunger no more neither thirst any more neither shall the sun light on them nor any heat 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters * Isa 2â— 8 Chap. 21.4 and God shall wipe away all tears from
15 And these are they by the way-side where the word is sown but when they have heard Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness 17 And have no root in themselves and so endure but for a time afterward when affliction or persecution ariseth for the words sake immediately they are offended 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns such as hear the word 19 And the cares of this world * 1 Tim. 6.17 and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entring in choke the word and it becometh unfruitful 20 And these are they which are sown on good ground such as hear the word and receive it and bring forth fruit some thirty-fold some sixty and some an hundred 21 ¶ * Matth. 5.5.15 And he said unto them Is a candle brought to be put under a ‖ The word in the original signifieth a less measure as Matth. 5.15 bushel or under a bed and not to be set on a candlestick 22 * Matth. 10.26 For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested neither was any thing kept secret but that it should come abroad 23 If any man have ears to hear let him hear 24 And he said unto them Take heed what you hear * Matth. 7.2 with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you and unto you that hear shall more be given 25 * Matth. 13.12 For he that hath to him shall be given and he that hath not from him shall be taken even that which he hath 26 ¶ And he said So is the kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground 27 And should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring and grow up he knoweth not how 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of her self first the blade then the ear after that the full corn in the ear 29 But when the fruit is ‖ Or ripe brought forth immediately he putteth in the sickle because the harvest is come 30 ¶ And he said * Matth. 13.31 Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God or with what comparison shall we compare it 31 It is like a grain of mustard-seed which when it is sown in the earth is less then all the seeds that be in the earth 32 But when it is sown it groweth up and becometh greater then all herbs and shooteth out great branches so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it 33 * Matth. 13.34 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them as they were able to hear it 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples 35 * Matth. 8. â—3 And the same day when the even was come he saith unto them Let us pass over unto the other side 36 And when they had sent away the multitude they took him even as he was in the ship and there were also with him other little ships 37 And there arose a great storm of wind and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake him and say unto him Master carest thou not that we perish 39 And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea Peace be still and the wind ceased and there was a great calm 40 And he said unto them Why are ye so fearful how is it that you have no faith 41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another What manner of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey him CHAP. V. 1 Christ delivering the possessed of the legion of devils 13 they enter into the swine 25 He healeth the woman of the bloudy issue 35 and raiseth from death Jairus his daughter ANd * Matth. 8.28 they came over unto the other side of the sea into the countrey of the Gadarenes 2 And when he was come out of the ship immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs and no man could binde him no not with chains 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains and the chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither could any man tame him 5 And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cuttâ—ng himself with stones 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off he ran and worshipped him 7 And cried with a loud voice and said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not 8 For he said unto him Come out of the man thou unclean spirit 9 And he asked him What is thy name And he answered saying My name is Legion for we are many 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the countrey 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding 12 And all the devils besought him saying Send us into the swine that we may enter into them 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave And the unclean spirits went out and entred into the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea 14 And they that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the countrey And they went out to see what it was that was done 15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 16 And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts 18 And when he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not but saith unto him Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion on thee 20 And he departed and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea 22 * Matth. 9.18 And behold there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet 23 And besought him greatly saying My little daughter lieth at the
point of death I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed and she shall live 24 And Jesus went with him and much people followed him and thronged him 25 And a certain woman which had an issue of bloud twelve years 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse 27 When she had heard of Jesus came in the preass behinde and touched his garment 28 For she said If I may touch but his clothes I shall be whole 29 And straightway the fountain of her bloud was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague 30 And Jesus immediately knowing in himself that vertue had gone out of him turned him about in the preass and said Who touched my clothes 31 And his disciples said unto him Thou seest the multitude thronging thee and sayest thou Who touched me 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing 33 But the woman fearing and trembling knowing what was done in her came and fell down before him and told him all the truth 34 And he said unto her Daughter thy saith hath made thee whole go in peace and be whole of thy plague 35 While he yet spake there came from the ruler of the synagogues house certain which said Thy daughter is dead why troublest â—â—ou the Master any further 36 Assoon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue Be not afraid onely beleeve 37 And he suffered no man to follow him save Peter and James and John the brother of James 38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and seeth the tumult and them that wept and wailed greatly 39 And when he was come in he saith unto them Why make ye this ado and weep the damsel is not dead but sleepeth 40 And they laughed him to scorn but when he had put them all out he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel and them that were with him and entreth in where the damsel was lying 41 And he took the damsel by the hand and said unto her Talitha cumi which is being interpreted Damsel I say unto thee arise 42 And straightway the damsel arose and walked for she was of the age of twelve years and they were astonished with a great astonishment 43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat CHAP. VI. 1 Christ is contemned of his countreymen 7 He giveth the twelve power over unclean spirits 14 Divers opinions of Christ 〈◊〉 John Baptist is beheaded 29 and buried 30 The apostles return from preaching 34 The miracle of five loaves and two fishes 48 Christ walketh on the sea 53 and bealeth all that touch him ANd * Matth. 13.54 he went out from thence and came into his own countrey and his disciples follow him 2 And when the sabbath-day was come he began to teach in the synagogue and many hearing him were aâ—tonished saying From whence hath this man these things and what wisdom is this which is given unto him that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands 3 Is not this the carpenter the son of Mary the brother of James and Joses and of Juda and Simon and are not his sisters here with us And they were offended at him 4 But Jesus said unto them * Joh. 4.44 A prophet is not without honour but in his own countrey and among his own kin and in his own house 5 And he could there do no mighty work save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them 6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief * Mat. 9.35 Luk. 13.22 And he went round about the villages teaching 7 ¶ * Mat. 10.1 And he calleth unto him the twelve and began to send them forth by two and two and gave them power over unclean spirits 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey save a staff onely no scrip no bread no ‖ The word signifieth 〈◊〉 piâ—â—â— of brast money in valâ—â— somewhat less then a farthing Mat. 10.9 but 〈◊〉 it is taken in general for money money in their purse 9 But be shod with sandals and not put on two coats 10 And he said unto them In what place soever ye enter into an house there abide till ye depart from that place 11 * Mat 10.14 And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear you when ye depart thence * Act. 13.51 shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them Verily I say unto you it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgement then for that city 12 And they went out and preached that men should repent 13 And they cast out many devils * Jam. 5.14 and anointed with oyl many that were sick and healed them 14 * Mat. 14.1 And king Herod heard of him for his name was spread abroad and he said that John the Baptist was risen from the dead and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him 15 Others said That it is Elias And others said That it is a prophet or as one of the prophets 16 * Luk. 3.19 But when Herod heard thereof he said It is John whom I beheaded he is risen from the dead 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias sake his brother Philips wife for he had married her 18 For John had said unto Herod * Lev. 18.16 It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife 19 Therefore Herodias had ‖ Or â—n inward grudge a quarrel against him and would have killed him but she could not 20 For Herod feared John knowing that he was a just man and an holy and ‖ Or kept â—im or saâ—ed â—im observed him and when he heard him he did many things and heard him gladly 21 And when a convenient day was come that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords high captains and chief estates of Galilee 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and them that sat with him the king said unto the damsel Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt and I will give it thee 23 And he sware unto her Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me I will give it thee unto the hall of my kingdom 24 And she went forth and said unto her mother What shall I ask And she said The head of John the Baptist 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king and asked saying I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist 26 And the king was exceeding sorry yet for his oaths sake and for their sakes
