of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o course_n and_o order_n that_o god_n take_v and_o use_v in_o our_o regeneration_n which_o be_v first_o to_o humble_v we_o that_o he_o may_v exalt_v we_o and_o to_o judgement_n thereby_o until_o such_o time_n as_o they_o be_v regenerate_v effectual_o call_v and_o bear_v again_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o reprobation_n that_o be_v to_o be_v such_o as_o for_o the_o present_n have_v go_v further_o nor_o make_v any_o further_a progress_n in_o the_o way_n of_o life_n then_o have_v he_o which_o be_v a_o reprobate_n indeed_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o darkness_n and_o to_o be_v alien_n stranger_n yea_o enemy_n to_o god_n but_o on_o the_o of_o his_o salvation_n yet_o may_v he_o not_o in_o defect_n of_o faith_n and_o other_o grace_n of_o regeneration_n conclude_v his_o own_o condemnation_n and_o say_v that_o he_o be_v for_o ever_o reprobate_v and_o castaway_n for_o that_o he_o have_v yet_o a_o time_n and_o space_n to_o live_v be_v it_o never_o so_o short_a a_o moment_n the_o lord_n may_v therein_o call_v he_o home_o and_o gather_v he_o unto_o himself_o the_o child_n can_v say_v that_o he_o be_v condemn_v because_o he_o have_v not_o faith_n because_o that_o when_o he_o come_v to_o man_n estate_n the_o gift_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v impart_v unto_o he_o neither_o he_o that_o be_v at_o man_n estate_n because_o that_o in_o his_o old_a age_n he_o may_v be_v receive_v neither_o yet_o he_o who_o old_a age_n have_v weary_v because_o that_o if_o in_o health_n he_o find_v it_o not_o yet_o in_o the_o last_o hour_n and_o upon_o his_o deathbed_n the_o lord_n may_v bestow_v the_o same_o upon_o he_o and_o supply_v the_o present_a time_n wherein_o we_o find_v and_o feel_v ourselves_o can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a argument_n to_o reason_n and_o conclude_v of_o that_o which_o we_o can_v tie_v or_o limit_v unto_o no_o certain_a time_n at_o all_o for_o what_o reason_n i_o pray_v you_o be_v it_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v i_o have_v live_v these_o twelve_o or_o fourteen_o year_n and_o yet_o be_o not_o call_v and_o therefore_o i_o be_o a_o castaway_n or_o i_o have_v live_v twenty_o thirty_o or_o forty_o year_n and_o yet_o i_o find_v no_o faith_n and_o therefore_o i_o be_o condemn_v or_o i_o be_o old_a weary_a weak_a sick_a and_o feeble_a i_o do_v look_v every_o hour_n to_o die_v i_o be_o uncertain_a of_o my_o life_n for_o a_o hour_n or_o a_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n such_o be_v my_o infirmity_n and_o yet_o i_o find_v no_o comfort_n of_o my_o call_v and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v call_v at_o all_o as_o though_o god_n be_v bind_v of_o duty_n to_o order_v thing_n according_a to_o the_o servant_n shall_v pry_v so_o far_o into_o the_o closet_n of_o his_o master_n secret_n and_o who_o can_v reach_v or_o who_o be_v able_a or_o meet_a to_o search_v out_o the_o depth_n of_o his_o eternal_a counsel_n rather_o lay_v thy_o hand_n upon_o thy_o mouth_n with_o modesty_n and_o be_v it_o soon_o or_o be_v it_o late_o do_v thou_o still_o obedient_o depend_v upon_o the_o lord_n good_a will_n and_o pleasure_n which_o then_o shall_v take_v effect_n when_o as_o it_o seem_v to_o his_o wisdom_n most_o convenient_a be_v it_o therefore_o grant_v which_o be_v so_o much_o presume_v in_o himself_o a_o reprobate_n because_o that_o no_o man_n in_o such_o a_o case_n can_v in_o this_o life_n peremptory_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v a_o castaway_n as_o have_v be_v before_o show_v though_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o man_n regenerate_v may_v be_v certain_o assure_v of_o his_o salvation_n even_o while_o he_o continue_v in_o this_o life_n second_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o vocation_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n work_v call_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o call_v and_o our_o feel_n must_v be_v next_o consider_v for_o the_o ignorance_n hereof_o make_v many_o even_o in_o the_o very_a work_n and_o spring_n of_o life_n most_o of_o all_o to_o dread_v and_o stand_v in_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o in_o the_o very_a breed_n of_o faith_n to_o call_v in_o question_n and_o stand_v in_o doubt_n of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n we_o must_v therefore_o here_o note_n and_o mark_n that_o god_n work_v herein_o but_o not_o in_o all_o man_n alike_o for_o though_o some_o rather_o than_o other_o have_v and_o find_v more_o quick_a and_o cheerful_a conversion_n in_o that_o they_o find_v not_o such_o troublesome_a conflict_n within_o themselves_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o shortness_n of_o the_o time_n yet_o other_o he_o lead_v on_o soft_o and_o step_v by_o step_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o work_n of_o their_o conversion_n so_o that_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o put_v a_o great_a difference_n and_o a_o long_a pause_n betwixt_o the_o two_o several_a and_o general_a point_n in_o their_o regeneration_n that_o be_v their_o humiliation_n in_o regard_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o law_n and_o their_o exaltation_n in_o regard_n of_o faith_n and_o feel_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n this_o humiliation_n therefore_o rest_v a_o long_a time_n in_o the_o sinful_a soul_n humiliation_n humiliation_n do_v breed_v the_o great_a conflict_n and_o bring_v forth_o a_o far_o strong_a combat_n because_o the_o time_n and_o space_n be_v great_a wherein_o he_o have_v to_o consider_v of_o the_o fearful_a and_o dangerous_a condition_n of_o his_o own_o estate_n be_v thus_o as_o be_v say_v humble_v in_o regard_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o law_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v first_o because_o that_o the_o man_n so_o humble_v do_v not_o remember_v reason_n 1._o reason_n that_o god_n thus_o work_v in_o his_o servant_n by_o degree_n and_o not_o all_o at_o one_o time_n and_o in_o one_o instant_a object_n and_o thereupon_o the_o trouble_a soul_n be_v ready_a to_o object_n and_o allege_v i_o have_v be_v and_o continue_v a_o long_a time_n under_o the_o fearful_a curse_n and_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n by_o reason_n of_o my_o great_a wickedness_n and_o my_o soul_n be_v humble_v and_o abase_v even_o unto_o the_o hell_n and_o yet_o i_o find_v or_o feel_v no_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o sure_o my_o case_n be_v hard_a and_o dangerous_a and_o i_o can_v be_v none_o other_o but_o a_o castaway_n answ_n this_o reason_n or_o rather_o objection_n be_v of_o some_o force_n indeed_o if_o it_o can_v be_v certain_o prove_v that_o god_n effect_v all_o at_o once_o and_o that_o he_o never_o put_v any_o time_n and_o distance_n betwixt_o these_o two_o point_n of_o man_n conversion_n namely_o his_o humble_v and_o his_o exaltation_n but_o see_v that_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n betwixt_o his_o wound_a and_o cure_v his_o strike_n and_o heal_v his_o abase_v and_o raise_v up_o again_o it_o may_v very_o well_o be_v answer_v to_o the_o cheer_v and_o refresh_v of_o the_o break_a and_o contrite_a soul_n that_o this_o reason_n can_v be_v in_o any_o part_n sufficient_a to_o breed_v in_o any_o despair_n though_o satan_n set_v never_o so_o fair_a and_o goodly_a a_o gloss_n upon_o it_o and_o therefore_o whensoever_o satan_n begin_v to_o assault_v and_o set_v upon_o any_o man_n in_o this_o manner_n let_v the_o person_n so_o assault_v cast_v up_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o mind_n &_o fix_v his_o meditation_n upon_o this_o course_n of_o god_n which_o he_o use_v in_o man_n conversion_n and_o learn_v withal_o to_o put_v in_o practice_n the_o rule_n of_o david_n a_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n hope_v in_o the_o lord_n 27.14_o psal_n 27.14_o expect_v his_o leisure_n and_o he_o shall_v comfort_v thy_o heart_n object_n but_o hereupon_o the_o trouble_a person_n so_o disquiet_v in_o mind_n will_v gather_v and_o say_v unto_o i_o how_o can_v these_o despair_n and_o faith_n terror_n of_o wrath_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n fear_v of_o judgement_n and_o hope_n of_o mercy_n agree_v together_o be_v in_o nature_n and_o in_o effect_n so_o contrary_a and_o repugnant_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o thing_n impossible_a for_o as_o these_o three_o latter_o that_o be_v faith_n peace_n and_o hope_n
against_o it_o because_o it_o find_v it_o offensive_a unto_o god_n and_o thus_o now_o you_o may_v see_v the_o difference_n of_o these_o two_o motion_n in_o these_o several_a estate_n of_o man_n though_o oftentimes_o i_o know_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n do_v flatter_v himself_o in_o the_o sight_n hereof_o as_o though_o he_o have_v find_v some_o goodly_a and_o precious_a jewel_n in_o the_o dunghill_n of_o his_o corrupt_a nature_n when_o as_o in_o very_a deed_n it_o be_v nothing_o so_o chap._n xiiii_o how_o the_o man_n disquiet_v in_o conscience_n shall_v in_o the_o same_o behane_n himself_o now_o as_o these_o thing_n hitherto_o have_v be_v utter_v for_o direction_n so_o some_o thing_n also_o be_v to_o be_v annex_v partly_o out_o of_o that_o which_o go_v before_o and_o partly_o over_o and_o beside_o the_o same_o to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v the_o man_n in_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o disquiet_v with_o the_o weakness_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o manifold_a imperfection_n which_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o how_o he_o may_v use_v and_o demean_v himself_o in_o view_n and_o meditation_n of_o they_o and_o that_o he_o may_v do_v it_o with_o great_a comfort_n &_o less_o distrust_n first_o therefore_o i_o will_v wish_v and_o advise_v such_o a_o man_n not_o to_o pass_v over_o every_o thing_n light_o in_o a_o slight_a manner_n trial_n not_o rest_n in_o fear_n without_o due_a trial_n without_o a_o due_a and_o deliberate_a consideration_n as_o be_v the_o common_a use_n of_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n but_o rather_o to_o grow_v to_o a_o thorough_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o himself_o for_o oftentimes_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o for_o want_v hereof_o there_o arise_v many_o great_a discomfort_n unto_o man_n when_o man_n either_o utter_o refuse_v or_o else_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o light_a cause_n defer_v the_o matter_n do_v not_o search_v so_o deep_o into_o themselves_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o so_o through_o this_o default_n they_o do_v bereave_v themselves_o of_o the_o sight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o those_o good_a motion_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o comfort_n thereof_o come_v which_o other_o man_n do_v enjoy_v and_o in_o this_o point_n it_o fall_v out_o with_o man_n refuse_v or_o delay_v to_o make_v this_o trial_n as_o it_o do_v with_o a_o man_n disease_v with_o a_o sore_n and_o grievous_a imposthume_n who_o if_o he_o do_v look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n find_v nothing_o but_o such_o matter_n as_o still_o threaten_v grief_n and_o anguish_n but_o if_o he_o pierce_v into_o it_o and_o lance_n it_o feel_v present_a ease_n so_o while_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o his_o imperfection_n he_o shall_v find_v nothing_o but_o matter_n to_o move_v and_o lead_v he_o to_o despair_v but_o if_o he_o pierce_v into_o himself_o and_o into_o the_o secret_a chamber_n of_o his_o heart_n by_o due_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o too_o austere_a a_o judge_n over_o himself_o he_o shall_v find_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o that_o which_o may_v serve_v unto_o he_o as_o a_o cause_n of_o great_a and_o exceed_a comfort_n second_o i_o will_v not_o have_v he_o in_o this_o his_o tryall-making_a to_o be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v either_o a_o austere_a himself_o not_o to_o be_v too_o austere_a a_o judge_n upon_o himself_o or_o a_o corrupt_a and_o unjust_a judge_n upon_o himself_o ready_a rash_o to_o pronounce_v and_o give_v the_o sentence_n before_o the_o cause_n be_v well_o and_o thorough_o know_v for_o this_o be_v a_o usual_a fault_n and_o too_o too_o common_a among_o man_n and_o have_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o many_o great_a inconvenience_n that_o we_o may_v therefore_o be_v find_v herein_o the_o more_o careful_a to_o prevent_v and_o avoid_v evil_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o well_o consider_v of_o the_o cause_n which_o we_o have_v in_o hand_n with_o the_o circumstance_n thereof_o the_o cause_n be_v a_o trial_n of_o sin_n whereunto_o be_v to_o be_v plead_v either_o guilty_a or_o not_o guilty_a the_o circumstance_n be_v the_o person_n agent_n which_o be_v the_o soul_n accuse_v satan_n and_o sin_n the_o accuser_n and_o in_o this_o the_o conscience_n be_v as_o a_o judge_n the_o silly_a soul_n now_o as_o a_o offender_n in_o woeful_a case_n stand_v at_o the_o bar_n hold_v up_o the_o hand_n to_o be_v try_v and_o find_v either_o guilty_a or_o not_o guilty_a this_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o silly_a soul_n be_v no_o doubt_n the_o principal_a part_n of_o man_n and_o most_o to_o be_v account_v of_o as_o a_o most_o precious_a jewel_n for_o although_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o great_a abundance_n of_o earthly_a treasure_n yet_o be_v it_o nothing_o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o to_o gain_v and_o get_v the_o whole_a world_n it_o profit_v not_o at_o all_o to_o a_o man_n 9.25_o luk._n 9.25_o if_o he_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o post_a and_o hasty_a judgement_n can_v in_o very_a deed_n prejudice_n or_o forestall_v the_o final_a sentence_n of_o the_o everlasting_a judge_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v post_v over_o and_o pass_v upon_o so_o light_o as_o man_n common_o do_v suppose_v but_o with_o good_a and_o deep_a deliberation_n as_o in_o such_o a_o weighty_a cause_n be_v requisite_a the_o accuser_n as_o i_o have_v say_v be_v satan_n and_o sin_n accuser_n satan_n and_o sin_n his_o accuser_n and_o these_o be_v find_v oftentimes_o not_o only_o false_a euidencer_n but_o also_o envious_a witness_n and_o such_o as_o indeed_o do_v not_o wish_v any_o good_a but_o harm_n yea_o utter_a destruction_n unto_o man_n both_o in_o body_n and_o soul_n and_o therefore_o since_o it_o be_v manifest_a to_o be_v true_a which_o i_o have_v say_v of_o they_o we_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n at_o all_o of_o any_o favour_n to_o be_v have_v at_o these_o accusants_n hand_n but_o that_o rather_o it_o be_v most_o assure_o to_o be_v look_v for_o that_o they_o will_v spew_v out_o their_o poison_n against_o the_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o far_o as_o they_o can_v to_o the_o utter_a destruction_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n against_o these_o so_o malicious_a and_o envious_a accuser_n advocate_n i'faith_o his_o advocate_n still_o urge_v the_o heinousness_n of_o thy_o iniquity_n faith_n as_o a_o wise_a and_o prudent_a advocate_n stand_v to_o plead_v the_o cause_n who_o although_o she_o always_o tell_v the_o truth_n and_o speak_v with_o great_a comfort_n yet_o be_v she_o oftentimes_o so_o shoulder_v out_o &_o suppress_v with_o the_o clamorous_a out_o cry_v of_o these_o malicious_a accusant_n that_o she_o can_v hardly_o be_v suffer_v to_o speak_v in_o such_o free_a manner_n as_o she_o will_v and_o if_o which_o faith_n plead_v in_o defence_n be_v ready_a to_o give_v sentence_n and_o judgement_n against_o the_o soul_n to_o the_o condemnation_n thereof_o but_o i_o will_v advertise_v every_o man_n in_o this_o session_n of_o trial_n upon_o himself_o still_o to_o have_v a_o care_n that_o he_o be_v not_o overhasty_a to_o pronounce_v the_o doom_n before_o the_o cause_n thorough_o hear_v and_o let_v he_o remember_v also_o that_o one_o motion_n and_o whisper_a word_n of_o faith_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v accept_v and_o account_v for_o a_o great_a and_o sore_a testimony_n repentance_n 3._o he_o must_v not_o so_o much_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o measure_n as_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o repentance_n &_o that_o with_o good_a advice_n what_o the_o thing_n be_v whereat_o we_o do_v aim_n and_o which_o we_o labour_v especial_o to_o search_v after_o and_o to_o find_v out_o in_o this_o trial_n and_o examination_n for_o even_o in_o this_o point_n also_o there_o be_v oftentimes_o error_n find_v by_o reason_n whereof_o among_o man_n there_o arise_v no_o small_a inconvenience_n the_o thing_n therefore_o that_o herein_o we_o be_v to_o have_v a_o special_a eye_n unto_o be_v not_o the_o great_a measure_n and_o quantity_n but_o rather_o the_o truth_n of_o repentance_n for_o although_o it_o be_v never_o so_o slender_a and_o weak_a in_o our_o conceit_n yet_o if_o repute_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a this_o reason_n of_o satan_n thus_o amplify_v the_o more_o subtle_o that_o it_o be_v by_o he_o couch_v the_o more_o forcible_o it_o prcuail_v with_o the_o weak_a and_o distress_a soul_n to_o the_o dangerous_a overthrow_n thereof_o for_o whereas_o it_o have_v be_v before_o show_v that_o both_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n be_v lively_a and_o justify_v faeith_n and_o that_o therefore_o their_o election_n be_v doubtless_o certain_a an_o i_o sure_a whatsoever_o the_o enemy_n of_o this_o doctrine_n will_v seem_v to_o object_n to_o the_o contrary_n chap._n xxxiii_o how_o the_o faithful_a shall_v know_v that_o they_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n these_o thing_n be_v in_o this_o manner_n set_v down_o for_o the_o better_a quiet_v of_o the_o trouble_a conscience_n it_o now_o remain_v that_o as_o we_o have_v occupy_v ourselves_o in_o point_v out_o the_o mark_n of_o a_o true_a &_o lively_a faith_n so_o likewise_o we_o take_v some_o pain_n to_o syft_n out_o and_o try_v also_o how_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n his_o faithful_a and_o elect_a child_n may_v discern_v and_o know_v that_o they_o have_v that_o testify_a spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereof_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 8.16_o that_o give_v that_o plain_a and_o evident_a testimony_n unto_o their_o spirit_n that_o they_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n for_o the_o wicked_a and_o reprobate_n in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o elect_n in_o this_o point_n may_v be_v easy_o deceive_v and_o mistake_v this_o their_o witness_n two_o thing_n here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o must_v take_v good_a heed_n of_o first_o that_o although_o the_o reprobate_n as_o i_o have_v say_v may_v in_o some_o sort_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o as_o shall_v be_v after_o more_o plain_o show_v yet_o that_o we_o do_v not_o suppose_v or_o think_v that_o they_o can_v in_o any_o wise_a be_v partaker_n of_o the_o same_o holy_a spirit_n as_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n for_o in_o this_o manner_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v impart_v to_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n only_o and_o to_o none_o other_o for_o as_o many_o as_o be_v lead_v by_o this_o spirit_n 8.14.2_o rom._n 8.14.2_o they_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n second_o that_o we_o do_v not_o imagine_v this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n to_o be_v distinct_a in_o substance_n and_o essence_n from_o that_o whereof_o the_o wicked_a be_v partaker_n as_o though_o it_o have_v a_o diverse_a nature_n but_o that_o the_o only_a difference_n be_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o operation_n or_o to_o speak_v more_o plain_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o distribute_v and_o divide_v his_o gift_n among_o man_n and_o spirit_n of_o peace_n and_o joy_n when_o he_o work_v this_o witness_n of_o adoption_n in_o any_o it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o on_o the_o other_o part_n when_o he_o put_v fear_n and_o terror_n into_o any_o he_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v dinner_n sity_n of_o gift_n etc._n 1._o cor._n 12.8_o etc._n etc._n but_o the_o same_o spirit_n for_o to_o one_o be_v give_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o word_n of_o wisdom_n and_o to_o another_o the_o word_n of_o knowledge_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o be_v give_v faith_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o gift_n of_o heal_a by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o operation_n of_o great_a work_n and_o to_o another_o prophecy_n and_o to_o another_o the_o discern_a of_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n and_o to_o another_o the_o interpretation_n of_o tongue_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n work_v even_o the_o self_n same_o spirit_n distribute_v to_o every_o man_n several_o as_o he_o will_n so_o that_o in_o nature_n and_o essence_n it_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o distribution_n of_o all_o these_o gift_n both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o also_o reprobate_n although_o the_o person_n in_o who_o he_o work_v be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v find_v to_o be_v diverse_a see_v then_o that_o the_o case_n stand_v so_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o that_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o some_o part_n be_v give_v and_o impart_v unto_o they_o i_o think_v it_o very_o expedient_a for_o the_o remove_n of_o all_o doubt_n which_o may_v arise_v concern_v this_o my_o assertion_n first_o to_o show_v in_o what_o manner_n this_o spirit_n be_v and_o do_v thus_o diverse_o work_v in_o the_o one_o and_o in_o the_o other_o in_o the_o elect_a and_o in_o the_o reprobate_n and_o seeond_o what_o be_v the_o true_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v be_v discern_v as_o touch_v the_o first_o it_o be_v be_v consider_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o essence_n very_a god_n and_o therefore_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v contain_v in_o any_o thing_n but_o fill_v heaven_n &_o earth_n and_o therefore_o when_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o any_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v that_o he_o be_v in_o they_o by_o his_o work_n and_o operation_n and_o this_o manner_n of_o his_o be_v in_o they_o be_v after_o two_o sort_n either_o natural_a or_o else_o supernatural_a natural_a i_o call_v that_o which_o exceed_v not_o the_o course_n and_o reach_v of_o man_n nature_n and_o this_o be_v such_o as_o touch_v and_o concerncth_v the_o be_v only_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o spirit_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o very_a senseless_a creature_n and_o to_o have_v his_o work_n and_o operation_n in_o they_o for_o by_o this_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o every_o thing_n be_v and_o have_v his_o be_v and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n it_o be_v preserve_v and_o maintain_v or_o else_o it_o be_v such_o as_o concern_v thing_n sensible_a and_o endue_v with_o life_n sense_n and_o motion_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v impart_v unto_o the_o very_a dumb_a
consider_v we_o may_v plain_o see_v that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o no_o difficulty_n for_o the_o person_n regenerate_v to_o make_v a_o true_a difference_n betwixt_o himself_o and_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o betwixt_o his_o own_o work_n and_o the_o work_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o so_o in_o himself_o he_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o if_o his_o work_n be_v do_v in_o faith_n in_o humility_n and_o love_n and_o to_o those_o good_a and_o godly_a end_n as_o i_o have_v declare_v how_o near_o so_o ever_o they_o appear_v to_o the_o work_n of_o hypocrite_n in_o matter_n yet_o differ_v so_o far_o from_o they_o in_o manner_n they_o be_v doubtless_o the_o true_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o himself_o also_o undoubted_o to_o be_v in_o the_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o god_n adopt_a child_n chap._n xxxvi_o of_o the_o second_o objection_n hitherto_o we_o have_v show_v how_o the_o man_n regenerate_v may_v be_v assure_v of_o his_o adoption_n now_o we_o be_v come_v to_o the_o other_o objection_n which_o be_v that_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o regenerate_a may_v fall_v again_o and_o therefore_o that_o all_o this_o which_o have_v be_v say_v be_v not_o to_o any_o purpose_n or_o effect_n for_o that_o he_o be_v not_o assure_v of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o this_o doctrine_n thus_o urge_v the_o final_a fall_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v indeed_o as_o far_o from_o the_o truth_n as_o truth_n itself_o be_v say_v to_o be_v from_o falsehood_n for_o what_o a_o dangerous_a point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v it_o that_o i_o speak_v no_o hardly_o that_o any_o man_n shall_v once_o think_v that_o they_o which_o be_v once_o renew_v and_o regenerate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n can_v afterward_o relapse_n and_o fall_v away_o without_o recovery_n this_o doctrine_n i_o may_v very_o well_o call_v dangerous_a because_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n first_o broach_v by_o satan_n himself_o the_o author_n of_o all_o mischief_n &_o therefore_o very_o prejudicial_a unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o not_o in_o any_o hand_n to_o be_v of_o we_o receive_v or_o hearken_v unto_o yea_o which_o be_v more_o it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v very_o injurious_a even_o to_o all_o the_o person_n in_o the_o deity_n in_o that_o their_o eternal_a decree_n be_v thereby_o as_o far_o as_o satan_n can_v prevail_v falsify_v &_o make_v frustrate_a &_o void_a nay_o this_o rather_o ought_v to_o be_v write_v and_o register_v for_o a_o undoubted_a and_o everlasting_a truth_n in_o the_o heart_n &_o upon_o the_o table_n of_o every_o faithful_a &_o christian_a soul_n that_o they_o that_o be_v once_o thorough_o and_o effectual_o call_v &_o regenerate_v can_v never_o fall_v away_o for_o ever_o but_o shall_v &_o must_v continue_v &_o persevere_v unto_o the_o end_n once_o regenerate_v &_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o ever_o so_o whatsoever_o satan_n &_o thy_o sinful_a flesh_n can_v devise_v &_o practice_v against_o thou_o my_o reason_n to_o prove_v this_o my_o assertion_n be_v as_o follow_v the_o first_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o certainty_n and_o immutability_n of_o the_o decree_n of_o god_n election_n reason_n 1._o reason_n for_o this_o decree_n can_v by_o any_o mean_n which_o satan_n can_v devise_v be_v alter_v and_o change_v for_o they_o that_o be_v predestinate_a unto_o life_n shall_v never_o be_v conden_v and_o contrariwise_o they_o that_o be_v ordain_v unto_o death_n shall_v out_o of_o doubt_n be_v never_o save_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o god_n who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o this_o decree_n do_v never_o alter_v or_o change_v &_o therefore_o his_o decree_n &_o purpose_n can_v be_v alter_v or_o change_v if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o his_o counsel_n can_v be_v change_v in_o this_o point_n these_o inconvenience_n will_v then_o follow_v that_o either_o god_n can_v not_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v decree_v and_o determine_v or_o else_o that_o in_o continuance_n of_o time_n the_o same_o decree_n may_v be_v better_v &_o amend_v both_o which_o be_v far_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n either_o not_o to_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v his_o will_n or_o not_o to_o see_v even_o at_o first_o and_o before_o all_o time_n what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o own_o glory_n this_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o of_o all_o the_o faithful_a to_o be_v receive_v as_o a_o undoubted_a verity_n that_o as_o god_n have_v be_v most_o wise_a and_o prudent_a before_o all_o beginning_n in_o his_o counsel_n and_o decree_n so_o he_o be_v and_o shall_v continue_v most_o powerful_a even_o for_o all_o eternity_n in_o perform_v and_o effect_v of_o the_o same_o wherefore_o since_o the_o election_n of_o every_o one_o of_o god_n faithful_a child_n be_v a_o thing_n so_o certain_a and_o so_o immutable_a that_o it_o can_v never_o change_v and_o since_o it_o be_v also_o prove_v that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o elect_n in_o his_o due_a time_n may_v assure_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v elect_v it_o also_o follow_v of_o necessity_n that_o he_o may_v in_o like_a sort_n assure_v himself_o of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v no_o less_o because_o that_o otherwise_o he_o shall_v make_v god_n to_o be_v variable_a and_o uncertain_a in_o his_o decree_n and_o purpose_n as_o one_o want_v either_o wisdom_n sufficient_a beforehand_o to_o decree_n and_o purpose_n or_o power_n in_o time_n appoint_v to_o perform_v his_o will_n in_o who_o the_o scripture_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o account_v both_o these_o namely_o his_o wisdom_n and_o power_n and_o also_o all_o other_o his_o essential_a property_n to_o be_v in_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o all_o perfection_n yea_o beyond_o all_o measure_n and_o account_n the_o second_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o motive_n cause_n of_o this_o election_n reason_n 2_o reason_n whole_o and_o alone_o in_o god_n love_n and_o in_o his_o glory_n for_o because_o of_o himself_o he_o love_v we_o therefore_o he_o elect_v we_o and_o because_o he_o will_v in_o this_o sort_n be_v glorify_v in_o we_o he_o so_o decree_v of_o us._n the_o cause_n be_v durable_a continual_a and_o subject_a to_o no_o change_n and_o how_o can_v then_o our_o election_n cease_v to_o be_v perpetual_a god_n love_n be_v limit_v with_o no_o time_n but_o who_o he_o love_v he_o love_v with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n and_o when_o think_v you_o shall_v that_o time_n be_v ever_o find_v even_o a_o little_a before_o who_o say_v the_o apostle_n shall_v lay_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o charge_n of_o god_n choose_v it_o be_v god_n that_o instifi_v if_o none_o can_v lay_v to_o the_o charge_n sure_o none_o can_v condemn_v and_o read_v the_o doom_n upon_o they_o it_o be_v christ_n that_o be_v dead_a yea_o rather_o that_o be_v rise_v again_o who_o be_v also_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o make_v intercession_n for_o us._n a_o argument_n no_o doubt_n very_o strong_a and_o forcible_a be_v here_o bring_v by_o the_o apostle_n christ_n say_v he_o be_v dead_a for_o sin_n and_o how_o then_o shall_v sin_n be_v impute_v to_o his_o choose_a whereof_o christ_n already_o have_v in_o his_o own_o person_n sustain_v the_o punishment_n or_o if_o the_o elect_n do_v daily_a sin_n as_o they_o without_o doubt_n do_v so_o long_o as_o they_o continue_v in_o this_o corrupt_a tabernacle_n yet_o how_o shall_v this_o deprive_v and_o spoil_v they_o of_o their_o hope_n see_v christ_n stand_v a_o continual_a intercessor_n and_o mediator_n in_o their_o behalf_n to_o qualify_v and_o appease_v his_o father_n wrath_n against_o they_o for_o sin_n see_v then_o that_o the_o matter_n be_v so_o plain_a thou_o be_v to_o leave_v off_o to_o dispute_v and_o reason_n against_o the_o durable_a estate_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a unto_o the_o end_n unless_o thou_o will_v show_v and_o prove_v thyself_o a_o very_a injurious_a censurer_n of_o this_o sacred_a office_n of_o christ_n our_o saviour_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v thou_o can_v not_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v hold_v guiltless_a but_o be_v to_o have_v god_n to_o be_v a_o sharp_a revenger_n of_o the_o injury_n do_v and_o commit_v by_o thou_o and_o it_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o seven_o reason_n may_v be_v draw_v from_o the_o promise_n and_o doctrine_n of_o life_n reason_n 7._o reason_n and_o of_o that_o joyful_a resurrection_n and_o glorious_a estate_n of_o god_n choose_v in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v these_o promise_n be_v so_o firm_a and_o sure_a and_o this_o doctrine_n be_v so_o clear_a that_o they_o can_v be_v gainesay_v without_o great_a prejudice_n for_o to_o say_v that_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n have_v once_o assurance_n of_o their_o election_n have_v not_o also_o therewith_o a_o assurance_n of_o their_o perseverance_n and_o continuance_n unto_o the_o end_n be_v to_o deprive_v they_o of_o the_o special_a use_n of_o those_o promise_n of_o such_o blessedness_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o than_o what_o great_a comfort_n shall_v the_o faithful_a and_o regenerate_v find_v in_o those_o promise_n then_o the_o faithless_a and_o reprobate_a and_o further_a what_o benefit_n or_o comfort_n can_v grow_v to_o the_o faithful_a by_o those_o three_o last_o article_n of_o our_o creed_n i_o believe_v the_o remission_n of_o sin_n the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o life_n everlasting_a if_o they_o can_v not_o also_o be_v assure_v that_o they_o shall_v hereafter_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o they_o for_o the_o reprobate_n yea_o the_o devil_n themselves_o do_v know_v that_o there_o be_v such_o bless_a thing_n prepare_v but_o this_o their_o knowledge_n nothing_o profit_v for_o that_o they_o be_v not_o indeed_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o they_o they_o do_v belong_v only_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o this_o end_n and_o purpose_n only_o tend_v the_o course_n and_o order_n of_o the_o instruction_n of_o christ_n the_o apostle_n and_o all_o the_o faithful_a minister_n of_o all_o age_n who_o have_v diligent_o teach_v the_o child_n of_o god_n to_o view_v and_o behold_v these_o bless_a thing_n not_o as_o thing_n be_v only_o but_o such_o also_o as_o one_o day_n assure_o they_o shall_v by_o christ_n be_v put_v in_o full_a possession_n of_o as_o their_o own_o
