and_o destroy_v he_o this_o great_a patron_n and_o benefactor_n this_o generous_a friend_n and_o lover_n of_o mankind_n be_v mortal_o hate_v and_o cruel_o persecute_v as_o if_o he_o have_v be_v a_o public_a enemy_n and_o have_v do_v or_o design_v some_o notorious_a mischief_n they_o continual_o lay_v trap_n to_o ensnare_v he_o load_v he_o with_o malicious_a slander_n greedy_o watch_v for_o a_o advantage_n to_o animate_v the_o multitude_n against_o he_o take_v up_o stone_n to_o throw_v at_o he_o as_o a_o reward_n of_o his_o gracious_a attemt_fw-mi to_o make_v they_o wise_a and_o happy_a put_v bad_a construction_n and_o make_v sinister_a interpretation_n of_o all_o the_o good_a he_o do_v as_o if_o he_o design_v to_o caress_n the_o people_n and_o by_o such_o art_n to_o gratify_v his_o ambition_n and_o make_v himself_o popular_a so_o that_o this_o great_a and_o gallant_a person_n be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o dangerous_a man_n and_o the_o more_o good_a he_o do_v the_o more_o he_o be_v fear_v and_o suspect_v yet_o all_o this_o and_o a_o thousand_o time_n worse_o usage_n can_v not_o dissuade_v he_o from_o persist_v in_o do_v good_a to_o they_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o repay_v all_o these_o injury_n with_o courtesy_n even_o his_o bitter_a enemy_n be_v partaker_n of_o his_o kindness_n and_o he_o still_o continue_v to_o entreat_v they_o to_o accept_v of_o life_n from_o he_o and_o with_o tear_n of_o true_a compassion_n bewail_v their_o infidelity_n and_o wilful_a folly_n nay_o at_o last_o when_o they_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o he_o and_o put_v he_o to_o the_o shameful_a death_n of_o the_o cross_n yet_o then_o do_v he_o pray_v to_o his_o father_n to_o forgive_v they_o and_o which_o be_v still_o most_o wonderful_a and_o be_v the_o very_a perfection_n of_o charity_n he_o willing_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o they_o who_o so_o cruel_o and_o treacherous_o take_v it_o from_o he_o thus_o our_o lord_n go_v about_o do_v good_a let_v we_o who_o be_v his_o disciple_n ample_a manner_n in_o that_o measure_n and_o degree_n our_o lord_n do_v we_o can_v by_o any_o mean_n however_o willing_a to_o it_o or_o diligent_a in_o it_o come_v up_o to_o the_o perfection_n of_o this_o noble_a and_o heroical_a example_n be_v such_o miraculous_a power_n communicate_v to_o we_o as_o be_v to_o our_o saviour_n so_o that_o by_o a_o word_n speak_v we_o can_v heal_v all_o manner_n of_o sickness_n and_o restore_v sight_n to_o the_o blind_a and_o foot_n to_o the_o lame_a can_v we_o instruct_v the_o ignorant_a reprove_v the_o profane_a admonish_v the_o err_a with_o so_o much_o ease_n advantage_n and_o authority_n as_o our_o bless_a lord_n do_v we_o shall_v then_o perhaps_o be_v very_o free_a and_o liberal_a in_o impart_v those_o great_a favour_n and_o blessing_n heaven_n have_v so_o signal_o bestow_v upon_o we_o for_o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o other_o but_o alas_o as_o thing_n now_o stand_v with_o we_o we_o have_v neither_o power_n nor_o skill_n nor_o mean_n to_o do_v good_a at_o all_o after_o that_o illustrious_a manner_n our_o saviour_n do_v to_o which_o all_o i_o shall_v at_o present_a reply_n be_v that_o though_o we_o can_v after_o that_o stupendous_a manner_n be_v beneficial_a to_o mankind_n as_o our_o saviour_n be_v yet_o there_o be_v very_o many_o thing_n which_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v for_o the_o good_a of_o other_o which_o our_o bless_a saviour_n can_v not_o do_v by_o reason_n of_o his_o poverty_n and_o low_a estate_n in_o this_o world_n without_o the_o expense_n of_o a_o miracle_n few_o of_o we_o but_o as_o to_o our_o outward_a circumstance_n in_o this_o life_n be_v in_o a_o far_o more_o plentiful_a condition_n than_o the_o son_n of_o god_n himself_o be_v whilst_o here_o on_o earth_n and_o it_o be_v in_o our_o power_n by_o ordinary_a way_n to_o relieve_v and_o succour_v oblige_v and_o benefit_n many_o so_o as_o our_o lord_n can_v not_o do_v without_o employ_v his_o divine_a power_n to_o furnish_v himself_o with_o mean_n for_o it_o be_v please_v therefore_o to_o take_v notice_n that_o it_o be_v not_o do_v good_a just_a in_o the_o same_o instance_n or_o after_o that_o same_o wonderful_a manner_n that_o this_o example_n oblige_v we_o unto_o but_o only_o to_o a_o like_a willingness_n and_o readiness_n to_o do_v good_a upon_o all_o fit_a occasion_n as_o far_o as_o our_o power_n and_o activity_n reach_v it_o oblige_v we_o all_o in_o our_o several_a station_n according_a to_o those_o opportunity_n god_n have_v afford_v we_o and_o those_o ability_n he_o have_v endue_v we_o with_o and_o those_o condition_n of_o life_n his_o providence_n have_v place_v we_o in_o to_o endeavour_v as_o much_o as_o in_o we_o lie_v the_o welfare_n and_o prosperity_n ease_n and_o happiness_n of_o all_o man_n so_o that_o other_o may_v bless_v the_o divine_a goodness_n for_o we_o the_o state_n of_o their_o body_n or_o mind_n be_v better_v by_o our_o impart_v to_o they_o what_o god_n have_v more_o abundant_o bestow_v upon_o we_o contrary_n to_o which_o be_v a_o narrow_a selfish_a stingy_a spirit_n when_o we_o be_v concern_v for_o none_o but_o ourselves_o and_o regard_v not_o how_o it_o fare_v with_o other_o man_n so_o it_o be_v but_o well_o with_o we_o when_o we_o follow_v our_o own_o humour_n and_o with_o great_a pleasure_n enjoy_v the_o accommodation_n of_o our_o own_o state_n when_o we_o think_v our_o own_o happiness_n the_o great_a because_o we_o have_v it_o alone_o to_o ourselves_o and_o no_o other_o partake_v of_o it_o which_o of_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v the_o most_o direct_o opposite_a to_o that_o benign_a and_o compassionate_a temper_n which_o our_o saviour_n come_v into_o the_o world_n by_o his_o doctrine_n and_o example_n to_o implant_v in_o man_n i_o shall_v not_o undertake_v to_o set_v before_o you_o the_o several_a instance_n of_o do_v good_a to_o other_o since_o they_o be_v so_o various_a and_o infinite_a and_o our_o duty_n vary_v according_a to_o our_o circumstance_n and_o though_o they_o be_v notorious_o covetous_a and_o uncharitable_a and_o hardly_o ever_o do_v any_o good_a office_n for_o their_o neighbour_n or_o brethren_n some_o again_o there_o be_v who_o pretend_v to_o be_v of_o a_o more_o spiritual_a and_o refine_a religion_n spend_v their_o time_n in_o contemplation_n and_o talk_n much_o of_o communion_n with_o god_n but_o look_v upon_o this_o way_n of_o serve_v god_n by_o do_v good_a as_o a_o low_a attainment_n a_o inferior_a dispensation_n suitable_a to_o child_n and_o novice_n in_o religion_n and_o think_v that_o they_o be_v excuse_v from_o these_o mean_a duty_n and_o yet_o read_v over_o the_o life_n of_o the_o best_a man_n that_o ever_o live_v the_o founder_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o religion_n and_o you_o can_v but_o confess_v what_o i_o have_v already_o show_v you_o that_o the_o great_a thing_n he_o be_v most_o exemplary_a and_o illustrious_a for_o be_v his_o unwearied_a readiness_n to_o help_v and_o oblige_v all_o man_n he_o go_v about_o do_v good_a and_o it_o be_v a_o scandal_n raise_v on_o our_o church_n that_o we_o do_v not_o hold_v the_o necessity_n of_o good_a work_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n but_o trust_v whole_o to_o faith_n for_o we_o hold_v and_o teach_v they_o to_o be_v as_o necessary_a as_o papist_n themselves_o can_v or_o do_v but_o then_o we_o say_v they_o be_v accept_v by_o god_n only_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o jesus_n christ_n 6._o and_o last_o nothing_o have_v great_a reward_n annex_v to_o it_o than_o do_v good_a and_o that_o both_o in_o this_o life_n and_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v i_o have_v time_n now_o but_o just_a to_o mention_v to_o you_o some_o few_o of_o those_o benefit_n and_o advantage_n that_o do_v either_o natural_o flow_v from_o it_o or_o by_o god_n gracious_a promise_n be_v annex_v to_o it_o to_o do_v good_a with_o what_o we_o enjoy_v be_v the_o most_o certain_a way_n to_o procure_v god_n blessing_n upon_o all_o we_o have_v it_o do_v entitle_v we_o to_o his_o more_o especial_a care_n and_o protection_n trust_v in_o the_o lord_n say_v david_n and_o be_v do_v good_a so_o shall_v thou_o dwell_v in_o the_o land_n and_o very_o thou_o shall_v be_v feed_v the_o divine_a goodness_n can_v but_o be_v mighty_o please_v to_o see_v man_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v able_a imitate_v itself_o and_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o god_n benignity_n for_o every_o good_a office_n we_o do_v to_o other_o man_n we_o have_v some_o thing_n to_o plead_v with_o god_n almighty_a to_o engage_v he_o to_o bestow_v upon_o we_o what_o we_o want_v or_o desire_v not_o by_o way_n of_o merit_n or_o desert_n but_o god_n himself_o gracious_o become_v our_o debtor_n take_v what_o be_v do_v to_o other_o in_o such_o case_n as_o do_v to_o himself_o and_o by_o promise_n oblige_v himself_o to_o full_a retaliation_n by_o this_o mean_n we_o provide_v against_o a_o evil_a day_n that_o which_o will_v mighty_o support_v we_o under_o all_o the_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n that_o may_v happen_v to_o we_o in_o this_o life_n our_o good_a work_n will_v attend_v we_o and_o stand_v by_o we_o at_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n as_o i_o have_v already_o hint_v to_o you_o nay_o far_o our_o good_a work_n will_v appear_v and_o plead_v for_o we_o before_o god_n tribunal_n and_o will_v procure_v for_o we_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o jesus_n christ_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o merciful_a god_n a_o glorious_a recompense_n at_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o just_a for_o at_o the_o last_o and_o final_a reckon_n when_o all_o man_n action_n shall_v be_v scan_v and_o judge_v the_o great_a king_n shall_v pass_v his_o sentence_n according_a to_o the_o good_a man_n have_v do_v or_o neglect_v to_o do_v in_o this_o life_n nay_o every_o way_n so_o great_a be_v the_o reward_n of_o do_v good_a that_o even_o wicked_a man_n who_o yet_o have_v be_v of_o bountiful_a temper_n and_o have_v have_v generous_a spirit_n shall_v fare_v the_o better_a in_o the_o other_o world_n for_o those_o good_a act_n of_o mercy_n and_o charity_n they_o have_v do_v here_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v say_v with_o which_o i_o end_v all_o that_o charity_n do_v cover_v a_o multitude_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o cover_v sin_n in_o the_o scripture_n phrase_n be_v to_o forgive_v they_o now_o of_o this_o say_n there_o be_v several_a sense_n give_v which_o i_o can_v stand_v now_o to_o recite_v but_o the_o word_n be_v true_a in_o these_o two_o sense_n 1._o if_o he_o that_o be_v thus_o true_o charitable_a and_o have_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o good_a in_o his_o generation_n be_v also_o endue_v with_o the_o other_o virtue_n and_o qualification_n require_v in_o a_o christian_a then_o though_o he_o may_v have_v a_o great_a many_o infirmity_n and_o miscarriage_n to_o answer_v for_o yet_o these_o fail_n shall_v be_v overlook_v and_o bury_v in_o his_o good_a deed_n and_o then_o they_o mean_v the_o same_o with_o that_o of_o the_o psalmist_n with_o the_o merciful_a god_n will_v show_v himself_o merciful_a he_o will_v show_v he_o all_o favour_n possible_a 2._o or_o else_o second_o if_o you_o understand_v these_o word_n charity_n shall_v cover_v a_o multitude_n of_o sin_n as_o speak_v of_o a_o person_n who_o though_o vicious_a in_o all_o other_o respect_v yet_o out_o of_o principle_n of_o common_a humanity_n or_o natural_a goodness_n of_o temper_n or_o greatness_n of_o spirit_n be_v very_o consider_v so_o far_o as_o to_o lessen_v his_o punishment_n he_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o less_o intolerable_a condition_n though_o that_o be_v sad_a enough_o than_o the_o cruel_a and_o uncharitable_a solemn_a and_o venerable_a part_n of_o christian_a worship_n a_o most_o excellent_a instrument_n of_o religion_n a_o institution_n of_o our_o saviour_n of_o mighty_a use_n and_o advantage_n to_o we_o if_o we_o due_o partake_v thereof_o and_o yet_o there_o be_v hardly_o any_o part_n of_o religion_n so_o little_a or_o so_o ill_o understand_v by_o the_o generality_n of_o christian_n among_o we_o as_o this_o duty_n which_o sufficient_o appear_v from_o that_o great_a number_n of_o those_o who_o constant_o join_v with_o the_o church_n in_o all_o other_o public_a office_n of_o divine_a worship_n and_o yet_o whole_o neglect_v the_o receive_n of_o this_o sacrament_n or_o at_o least_o communicate_v so_o seldom_o as_o if_o they_o look_v upon_o themselves_o at_o liberty_n to_o do_v it_o or_o not_o do_v it_o as_o they_o think_v best_a i_o speak_v not_o now_o of_o the_o profane_a contemner_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n who_o despise_v this_o as_o they_o do_v all_o the_o other_o duty_n
judgement_n can_v be_v too_o great_a or_o sharp_a to_o vindicate_v our_o saviour_n most_o excellent_a institution_n from_o such_o impious_a contempt_n but_o now_o this_o be_v by_o no_o mean_n to_o be_v extend_v to_o every_o little_a failure_n or_o omission_n in_o this_o duty_n or_o in_o our_o preparation_n for_o it_o as_o if_o that_o do_v render_v we_o such_o unworthy_a receiver_n as_o these_o corinthian_n be_v or_o straight_o consign_v we_o over_o to_o the_o same_o punishment_n those_o scandalous_a irregularity_n and_o excuse_n be_v here_o call_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o which_o be_v hear_v of_o only_a in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o the_o church_n when_o the_o sacrament_n be_v always_o join_v with_o these_o lovefeast_n which_o be_v therefore_o in_o process_n of_o time_n whole_o abrogate_a and_o to_o prevent_v that_o intemperance_n and_o abuse_n they_o have_v introduce_v it_o general_o prevail_v to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n fast_v but_o whatever_o fault_n may_v be_v find_v now_o among_o our_o communicant_n yet_o they_o can_v be_v charge_v with_o these_o mention_v in_o this_o chapter_n the_o worst_a of_o man_n if_o they_o do_v communicate_v at_o all_o do_v it_o with_o great_a reverence_n and_o more_o suitable_a deportment_n than_o these_o corinthian_n do_v so_o that_o neither_o the_o fault_n here_o reprove_v nor_o the_o punishment_n denounce_v have_v place_n now_o among_o we_o what_o reason_n then_o be_v there_o why_o this_o text_n of_o scripture_n shall_v fright_v any_o people_n from_o the_o sacrament_n whenas_o there_o be_v neither_o the_o same_o fault_n commit_v nor_o the_o same_o punishment_n inflict_v though_o this_o be_v the_o just_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o because_o this_o plea_n of_o unworthiness_n to_o receive_v be_v often_o insist_v upon_o to_o excuse_v our_o neglect_n of_o this_o sacrament_n i_o shall_v far_o and_o more_o large_o consider_v it_o by_o proceed_v to_o the_o three_o thing_n i_o propound_v to_o discourse_v of_o iii_o how_o far_o this_o danger_n of_o receive_v unworthy_o may_v reasonable_o scare_v and_o fright_v people_n from_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n and_o here_o i_o shall_v offer_v these_o few_o thing_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o all_o such_o as_o be_v serious_o dispose_v 1._o in_o a_o strict_a sense_n we_o be_v none_o of_o we_o all_o worthy_a of_o so_o great_a a_o favour_n and_o such_o a_o high_a privilege_n as_o to_o be_v admit_v to_o this_o sacrament_n or_o of_o such_o excellent_a benefit_n as_o be_v confer_v upon_o we_o in_o it_o after_o all_o our_o care_n after_o all_o our_o preparation_n to_o make_v ourselves_o fit_a yet_o still_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v ourselves_o unworthy_a but_o to_o pick_v up_o the_o crumb_n that_o fall_v from_o our_o master_n table_n much_o more_o to_o sit_v and_o feast_v at_o it_o if_o we_o be_v not_o to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n till_o we_o can_v account_v ourselves_o real_o worthy_a the_o best_a of_o man_n the_o more_o holy_a and_o humble_a they_o be_v the_o more_o averse_a will_v they_o be_v from_o this_o duty_n 2._o this_o unworthiness_n be_v no_o bar_n or_o hindrance_n to_o our_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n we_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o least_o mercy_n either_o spiritual_a or_o temporal_a which_o we_o enjoy_v must_v we_o therefore_o starve_v ourselves_o or_o go_v naked_a because_o we_o deserve_v not_o our_o food_n or_o raiment_n we_o be_v not_o worthy_a so_o much_o as_o to_o cast_v up_o our_o eye_n towards_o heaven_n the_o habitation_n of_o god_n holiness_n but_o what_o then_o shall_v we_o never_o make_v our_o humble_a address_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n grace_n because_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o ask_v or_o to_o have_v our_o petition_n hear_v and_o grant_v by_o he_o shall_v we_o refuse_v any_o favour_n the_o kindness_n of_o heaven_n offer_v to_o we_o because_o they_o be_v beyond_o our_o merit_n or_o more_o than_o we_o can_v challenge_v or_o expect_v it_o be_v not_o say_v here_o in_o the_o text_n he_o that_o be_v unworthy_a to_o eat_v and_o drink_v of_o this_o sacrament_n if_o he_o do_v it_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o if_o it_o be_v than_o indeed_o we_o may_v all_o be_v just_o afraid_a of_o come_v to_o this_o royal_a feast_n but_o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o now_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o thing_n between_o a_o man_n be_v unworthy_a to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n and_o his_o receive_n it_o unworthy_o which_o i_o shall_v thus_o illustrate_v he_o for_o example_n who_o have_v gross_o little_a power_n to_o draw_v other_o over_o to_o their_o side_n for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o more_o win_v and_o take_v sight_n in_o the_o world_n than_o the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a lead_v exact_o according_a to_o the_o prescript_n of_o his_o religion_n and_o be_v there_o not_o in_o all_o age_n some_o such_o person_n of_o authority_n and_o fame_n who_o zeal_n for_o religion_n inspire_v they_o with_o so_o much_o courage_n as_o that_o they_o be_v neither_o ashamed_a nor_o afraid_a of_o be_v honest_a and_o innocent_a whatever_o the_o mad_a world_n may_v say_v or_o think_v of_o they_o second_o thing_n propound_v which_o be_v to_o show_v how_o unreasonable_a it_o be_v to_o be_v entice_v to_o sin_n by_o such_o as_o argue_v for_o it_o and_o will_v endeavour_v to_o excuse_v it_o for_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v not_o altogether_o thus_o easy_a and_o complaisant_a as_o to_o follow_v mere_o for_o company_n nor_o so_o lazy_a as_o to_o take_v up_o every_o thing_n on_o trust_n but_o they_o be_v man_n of_o prudence_n and_o discretion_n who_o desire_v first_o to_o be_v satisfy_v whether_o what_o they_o be_v entice_v to_o be_v prudent_a and_o safe_a they_o like_v a_o wicked_a life_n well_o enough_o can_v they_o be_v but_o furnish_v with_o some_o small_a reason_n and_o argument_n for_o it_o by_o which_o they_o may_v justify_v their_o choice_n and_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o their_o conscience_n i_o shall_v just_o mention_v these_o four_o way_n whereby_o sinner_n ordinary_o entice_v such_o as_o these_o to_o join_v with_o they_o either_o 1._o by_o represent_v the_o tell_v they_o that_o the_o law_n of_o religion_n be_v fit_v only_o for_o the_o dull_a and_o phlegmatic_a unactive_a and_o hypochondriac_a who_o grudge_n at_o other_o enjoy_v those_o delight_n which_o themselves_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o that_o nature_n design_v we_o shall_v free_o use_v whatever_o she_o have_v provide_v for_o our_o entertainment_n here_o and_o be_v not_o so_o unkind_a as_o their_o forgiveness_n that_o sometime_o there_o have_v appear_v now_o and_o then_o some_o illustrious_a instance_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o spirit_n man_n who_o have_v be_v as_o famous_a for_o their_o signal_n repentance_n as_o they_o be_v before_o for_o their_o profaneness_n and_o debauchery_n and_o that_o where_o god_n give_v such_o extraordinary_a grace_n in_o this_o life_n it_o be_v to_o be_v hope_v he_o will_v show_v extraordinary_a favour_n in_o the_o other_o so_o that_o if_o such_o man_n may_v be_v save_v it_o be_v nevertheless_o by_o way_n of_o prerogative_n
