view_n and_o a_o full_a consideration_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o do_v real_o lead_v and_o conduct_v we_o to_o the_o most_o ample_a even_o of_o those_o enjoyment_n that_o they_o be_v all_o glorious_a within_o and_o that_o their_o clothe_n too_o be_v of_o wrought_a gold_n that_o piety_n be_v of_o that_o nature_n that_o it_o need_v not_o affright_v we_o from_o her_o embrace_n by_o a_o apparent_a poverty_n that_o it_o do_v not_o only_o invite_v we_o by_o propose_v the_o most_o real_a contentment_n the_o most_o last_a delight_n and_o the_o most_o sublime_a enjoyment_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o better_a part_n but_o that_o even_o the_o avaricious_a may_v here_o find_v wherewith_o to_o content_v himself_o and_o gratify_v his_o most_o lavish_a desire_n for_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o one_o of_o the_o great_a of_o man_n seat_v in_o the_o most_o advantageous_a prospect_n in_o possession_n of_o the_o great_a wealth_n and_o abundance_n and_o what_o be_v more_o inspire_v by_o god_n himself_o with_o a_o divine_a judgement_n and_o understanding_n and_o therefore_o certain_o one_o who_o be_v most_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o be_v the_o best_a method_n of_o acquisition_n by_o he_o i_o say_v we_o be_v inform_v that_o piety_n be_v the_o sure_a and_o straight_a way_n to_o wealth_n for_o as_o he_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o my_o text_n riches_n and_o honour_n be_v with_o she_o yea_o durable_a riches_n and_o righteousness_n the_o relative_n i_o in_o my_o text_n have_v relation_n to_o wisdom_n who_o solomon_n introduce_v speak_v in_o the_o 12_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n and_o by_o wisdom_n be_v general_o mean_v in_o this_o book_n of_o proverb_n that_o which_o only_o deserve_v the_o name_n of_o true_a wisdom_n i._n e._n virtue_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n for_o so_o the_o wise_a man_n explain_v himself_o when_o he_o say_v the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v the_o beginning_n or_o as_o the_o original_a rather_o signify_v the_o perfection_n of_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n be_v what_o i_o have_v already_o hint_v it_o to_o be_v viz._n with_o piety_n be_v riches_n and_o honour_n yea_o durable_a riches_n and_o righteousness_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o usual_a in_o the_o write_n of_o solomon_n than_o to_o reiterate_v the_o same_o assertion_n in_o substance_n with_o some_o variation_n of_o phrase_n so_o at_o c._n 12._o v._n 28._o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n there_o be_v life_n and_o in_o the_o pathway_n thereof_o there_o be_v no_o death_n and_o c._n 5._o v._n 22._o his_o own_o iniquity_n shall_v take_v the_o wicked_a himself_o and_o he_o shall_v be_v hold_v with_o the_o cord_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o in_o conformity_n to_o these_o and_o many_o other_o place_n of_o the_o like_a nature_n i_o take_v the_o two_o part_n of_o my_o text_n to_o signify_v one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o that_o the_o different_a expression_n be_v only_o to_o set_v off_o the_o truth_n more_o advantageous_o and_o the_o repetition_n to_o inculcate_v and_o impress_v it_o the_o deep_a upon_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n so_o that_o riches_n and_o honour_n in_o this_o place_n signify_v the_o same_o thing_n as_o riches_n and_o righteousness_n and_o the_o difference_n lie_v only_o in_o the_o addition_n of_o durable_a to_o make_v the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o sentence_n more_o elegant_a and_o pathetic_a now_o righteousness_n signify_v most_o frequent_o in_o scripture_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v join_v with_o riches_n that_o part_n of_o general_a righteousness_n or_o universal_a justice_n which_o be_v opposite_a to_o avarice_n and_o be_v usual_o call_v liberality_n and_o charity_n the_o sense_n of_o the_o latter_a clause_n will_v be_v that_o piety_n give_v durable_a riches_n and_o disposition_n likewise_o to_o make_v a_o liberal_a and_o charitable_a use_n of_o they_o and_o consonant_a to_o this_o the_o honour_n in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o my_o text_n must_v denote_v that_o honour_n which_o arise_v from_o such_o a_o bountiful_a management_n of_o riches_n and_o so_o be_v the_o consequent_a and_o effect_n of_o righteousness_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o due_a management_n and_o thus_o the_o whole_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o be_v brief_o comprise_v in_o these_o three_o particular_n that_o piety_n be_v the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n 1._o to_o gain_v riches_n certain_o 2._o to_o enjoy_v they_o durable_o and_o 3._o to_o use_v they_o honourable_o but_o this_o last_o proposition_n that_o piety_n teach_v to_o manage_v riches_n honourable_o be_v that_o which_o will_v at_o first_o sight_n be_v grant_v by_o all_o man_n of_o reason_n since_o if_o honour_n be_v take_v in_o the_o true_a notion_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o testimony_n that_o be_v give_v to_o virtuous_a and_o good_a action_n and_o therefore_o can_v arise_v proper_o from_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o guide_v by_o piety_n nay_o nothing_o be_v more_o dishonourable_a and_o detestable_a than_o to_o use_v riches_n as_o the_o idol_n of_o our_o affection_n or_o the_o instrument_n of_o our_o vice_n to_o covet_v they_o dote_v upon_o they_o and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o they_o or_o to_o make_v they_o subservient_fw-fr to_o gratify_v our_o lust_n oppress_v our_o neighbour_n or_o obstruct_v the_o course_n of_o law_n and_o justice_n i_o shall_v therefore_o wave_v this_o as_o grant_v on_o all_o hand_n and_o confine_v my_o present_a discourse_n to_o the_o former_a part_n of_o my_o text_n which_o seem_v more_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o proof_n and_o illustration_n namely_o that_o piety_n be_v the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n to_o gain_v riches_n and_o to_o secure_v and_o perpetuate_v the_o possession_n of_o they_o the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n i_o say_v for_o before_o i_o proceed_v further_o i_o must_v premise_v that_o all_o the_o sentence_n that_o occur_v in_o this_o book_n of_o proverb_n be_v not_o universal_o infallible_a and_o uncapable_a of_o any_o exception_n but_o that_o the_o book_n do_v chief_o consist_v of_o such_o observation_n as_o be_v general_o true_a and_o such_o rule_n as_o prudence_n will_v common_o dictate_v to_o give_v a_o instance_n of_o each_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n give_v c._n 22._o v._n 26._o be_v not_o thou_o one_o of_o they_o that_o strike_v hand_n or_o of_o they_o that_o be_v surety_n for_o debt_n and_o it_o be_v a_o observation_n c._n 10._o v._n 27._o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n prolong_v day_n but_o the_o year_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v shorten_v now_o the_o former_a of_o these_o be_v not_o so_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o if_o all_o suretyship_n be_v utter_o unlawful_a and_o that_o there_o can_v never_o happen_v a_o case_n in_o which_o love_n gratitude_n or_o charity_n may_v require_v it_o at_o our_o hand_n but_o that_o it_o be_v very_o prudential_a not_o to_o engage_v in_o it_o common_o nor_o without_o due_a caution_n and_o previous_a consideration_n nor_o be_v the_o latter_a to_o be_v take_v in_o that_o sense_n that_o god_n do_v never_o call_v a_o good_a man_n to_o himself_o before_o he_o arrive_v at_o grey_a hair_n or_o that_o the_o wicked_a be_v always_o cut_v off_o in_o the_o vigour_n of_o their_o youth_n but_o that_o in_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o thing_n and_o the_o common_a dispensation_n of_o providence_n the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v tend_v to_o the_o prolongation_n of_o life_n and_o wickedness_n and_o debauchery_n hasten_v our_o dissolution_n now_o agreeable_o to_o these_o and_o such_o like_a place_n the_o meaning_n of_o my_o text_n be_v not_o that_o good_a man_n be_v always_o favour_v with_o wealth_n and_o riches_n or_o that_o they_o never_o lose_v they_o when_o once_o obtain_v nor_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o very_o vicious_a person_n sometime_o to_o be_v raise_v to_o fortune_n and_o estate_n but_o that_o however_o god_n in_o his_o extraordinary_a providence_n may_v dispose_v of_o thing_n however_o he_o may_v sometime_o in_o his_o wrath_n let_v sin_n flourish_v to_o make_v up_o the_o measure_n of_o its_o wickedness_n may_v let_v the_o ungodly_a be_v lusty_a and_o strong_a secure_a from_o the_o misfortune_n of_o other_o man_n and_o prosperous_a till_o their_o eye_n swell_v with_o fatness_n and_o they_o do_v even_o what_o they_o list_v and_o however_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o may_v please_v he_o to_o deny_v riches_n to_o the_o good_a and_o virtuous_a or_o to_o deprive_v they_o of_o those_o he_o have_v former_o give_v they_o either_o to_o manifest_v his_o own_o power_n to_o try_v their_o patience_n to_o divert_v their_o mind_n from_o the_o world_n to_o better_a thing_n or_o by_o a_o act_n of_o the_o great_a mercy_n to_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o temptation_n when_o his_o omniscience_n foresee_v they_o will_v be_v ensnare_v by_o they_o whatever_o i_o say_v may_v be_v the_o extraordinary_a disposition_n of_o god_n
