the_o uncertain_a conjecture_n of_o their_o natural_a reason_n if_o we_o have_v no_o other_o assurance_n of_o the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o another_o life_n but_o what_o be_v afford_v we_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o deduction_n of_o philosophy_n i_o doubt_v we_o can_v never_o expect_v to_o see_v any_o great_a reformation_n in_o our_o manner_n some_o of_o the_o philosopher_n have_v indeed_o to_o their_o immortal_a fame_n assert_v the_o truth_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o than_o other_o of_o they_o have_v as_o much_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o run_v they_o down_o and_o as_o for_o those_o of_o they_o that_o speak_v the_o best_a concern_v the_o other_o world_n yet_o god_n know_v their_o discourse_n upon_o this_o argument_n as_o will_v appear_v to_o any_o that_o read_v they_o be_v general_o very_o uncertain_a and_o altogether_o conjectural_a but_o admit_v their_o reason_n to_o be_v strong_a and_o conclusive_a as_o i_o be_o far_o from_o deny_v
that_o the_o soul_n immortality_n be_v demonstrable_a by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n yet_o there_o be_v general_o these_o two_o inconvenience_n in_o the_o argument_n they_o make_v use_v of_o for_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o matter_n which_o render_v they_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n ineffectual_a for_o the_o reform_a man_n life_n first_o they_o be_v general_o of_o so_o great_a subtlety_n so_o proposition_n which_o attention_n it_o may_v be_v when_o a_o man_n most_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o their_o support_n he_o shall_v neither_o have_v the_o leisure_n nor_o the_o humour_n to_o give_v but_o now_o the_o christian_a method_n of_o prove_v another_o life_n be_v quite_o of_o another_o strain_n and_o whole_o free_a from_o these_o inconvenience_n that_o demonstration_n which_o christ_n have_v give_v we_o of_o a_o glorious_a immortality_n by_o his_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a as_o it_o be_v infinite_o certain_a and_o conclusive_a so_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o easy_a short_a and_o compendious_a powerful_a and_o operative_a no_o man_n that_o believe_v the_o matter_n of_o fact_n can_v deny_v the_o cogency_n of_o it_o man_n of_o the_o mean_a capacity_n may_v apprehend_v it_o person_n in_o a_o crowd_n of_o business_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o temptation_n may_v attend_v to_o it_o and_o it_o have_v this_o virtue_n beside_o that_o it_o leave_v a_o last_a impression_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v and_o consider_v it_o thanks_o therefore_o to_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o this_o excellent_a instrument_n of_o piety_n that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o by_o his_o resurrection_n everlasting_a praise_n to_o his_o name_n that_o he_o have_v thus_o bring_v life_n and_o immortality_n to_o light_v by_o his_o gospel_n this_o very_a assistance_n by_o which_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o vanquish_v our_o corruption_n and_o to_o live_v up_o to_o the_o precept_n of_o our_o religion_n as_o christ_n by_o his_o resurrection_n do_v oblige_v external_a splendour_n and_o grandeur_n which_o usual_o do_v so_o much_o dazzle_v the_o eye_n of_o mortal_a men._n but_o god_n fail_v not_o to_o make_v abundant_a amends_o for_o the_o meanness_n of_o his_o birth_n by_o give_v sundry_a other_o demonstrable_a evidence_n of_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v then_o bear_v for_o the_o magi_n from_o the_o east_n prince_n shall_v i_o call_v they_o or_o philosopher_n be_v conduct_v by_o a_o new_a star_n come_v and_o pay_v their_o homage_n and_o bring_v their_o offering_n to_o this_o king_n of_o the_o world_n in_o a_o manger_n and_o the_o shepherd_n that_o be_v watch_v their_o flock_n in_o the_o field_n by_o night_n be_v surprise_v with_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o lord_n shine_v round_o about_o they_o and_o a_o angel_n that_o thus_o speak_v to_o they_o fear_v not_o for_o behold_v i_o bring_v you_o tiding_n of_o great_a joy_n which_o shall_v be_v to_o all_o people_n for_o unto_o you_o be_v bear_v this_o day_n in_o the_o city_n of_o david_n a_o saviour_n which_o be_v christ_n the_o lord_n and_o this_o shall_v be_v a_o sign_n unto_o you_o you_o shall_v find_v the_o babe_n wrap_v in_o swaddle_a clothes_n lie_v in_o a_o will_n towards_o men._n after_o this_o manner_n be_v the_o appearance_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o much_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n be_v his_o follow_a life_n it_o be_v a_o life_n of_o much_o poverty_n and_o meanness_n as_o to_o outward_a circumstance_n but_o it_o be_v a_o life_n in_o every_o period_n of_o it_o fraught_v with_o wonder_n whether_o we_o consider_v the_o admirable_a goodness_n and_o charmingness_n of_o his_o temper_n or_o the_o exemplary_a virtue_n and_o piety_n that_o do_v shine_v out_o in_o all_o his_o conversation_n or_o the_o divinity_n of_o his_o sermon_n and_o doctrine_n or_o his_o prodigious_a inimitable_a miracle_n or_o the_o attestation_n which_o be_v give_v to_o he_o from_o heaven_n or_o the_o usage_n he_o receive_v from_o man_n or_o the_o event_n which_o follow_v upon_o all_o these_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n but_o it_o be_v his_o first_o appearance_n in_o the_o flesh_n that_o we_o be_v this_o day_n meet_v together_o to_o commemorate_v and_o never_o have_v mankind_n so_o noble_a a_o argument_n give_v they_o to_o exercise_v their_o thought_n and_o meditation_n upon_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o quality_n of_o the_o person_n appear_v that_o he_o be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n how_o ought_v we_o to_o be_v wrap_v with_o wonder_n and_o astonishment_n at_o the_o infiniteness_n of_o the_o divine_a condescension_n how_o ought_v we_o to_o be_v affect_v with_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n at_o such_o a_o never-to-be-parallelled_n instance_n of_o god_n kindness_n to_o we_o that_o he_o shall_v so_o love_v we_o as_o to_o send_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n into_o the_o world_n that_o we_o may_v live_v through_o he_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o this_o son_n of_o god_n resolve_v to_o appear_v in_o the_o world_n of_o all_o other_o way_n choose_v to_o do_v it_o in_o our_o flesh_n and_o so_o unite_v both_o the_o deity_n and_o humanity_n in_o one_o person_n o_o what_o a_o sense_n aught_o this_o to_o impress_v upon_o we_o of_o the_o honour_n that_o be_v here_o do_v to_o our_o nature_n and_o the_o dignity_n it_o be_v advance_v to_o and_o how_o ought_v that_o sense_n either_o to_o fright_v we_o or_o to_o shame_v we_o from_o prostitute_v this_o our_o nature_n to_o any_o vile_a unworthy_a mixture_n and_o communication_n which_o god_n do_v not_o disdain_v to_o take_v into_o so_o near_a a_o relation_n to_o himself_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o this_o god_n in_o humane_a flesh_n come_v as_o the_o messiah_n the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n so_o long_o before_o promise_v and_o so_o long_o expect_v how_o ought_v this_o to_o fill_v our_o heart_n with_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n how_o shall_v it_o move_v we_o to_o pour_v out_o our_o soul_n in_o benediction_n to_o god_n for_o have_v thus_o visited_n and_o redeem_v his_o people_n and_o put_v we_o into_o that_o dispensation_n which_o so_o many_o holy_a man_n for_o so_o many_o age_n wish_v to_o see_v but_o do_v not_o see_v it_o nay_o and_o which_o the_o angel_n themselves_o desire_v to_o look_v into_o and_o which_o the_o jew_n for_o reject_v at_o the_o time_n it_o be_v publish_v be_v to_o this_o day_n a_o stand_a monument_n of_o god_n poor_a beggar_n be_v child_n among_o we_o but_o general_o find_v better_a accommodation_n when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o world_n o_o what_o a_o check_n what_o a_o rebuke_v aught_o this_o to_o be_v to_o that_o spirit_n of_o ambition_n and_o pride_n and_o vainglory_n that_o too_o often_o possess_v we_o poor_a mortal_n how_o ought_v it_o to_o take_v off_o our_o admiration_n and_o lessen_v the_o too_o great_a esteem_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o have_v of_o all_o outward_a pomp_n and_o greatness_n nay_o and_o to_o make_v we_o despise_v all_o the_o glitter_a show_n and_o and_o bravery_n of_o the_o to_o consume_v the_o adversary_n iii_o the_o three_o general_n point_v i_o be_o to_o insist_v on_o from_o the_o text_n be_v the_o end_n of_o our_o saviour_n appearance_n and_o that_o be_v here_o say_v to_o be_v the_o put_v away_o of_o sin_n once_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n have_v he_o appear_v to_o put_v away_o sin_n this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o assign_v particular_o insist_v on_o it_o in_o answer_n therefore_o to_o this_o question_n we_o say_v that_o two_o thing_n be_v employ_v in_o christ_n be_v put_v away_o sin_n first_o his_o save_n or_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o gild_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o they_o second_o his_o save_n or_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o power_n and_o dominion_n of_o they_o in_o these_o two_o thing_n consist_v the_o salvation_n obtain_v for_o we_o by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o if_o either_o of_o they_o be_v want_v or_o be_v not_o effect_v he_o will_v not_o be_v a_o complete_a saviour_n first_o christ_n appear_v to_o put_v away_o sin_n by_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o gild_n and_o punishment_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v by_o procure_v for_o we_o the_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o it_o this_o be_v the_o salvation_n which_o zachary_n in_o his_o hymn_n foretell_v john_n baptist_n shall_v publish_v to_o the_o world_n luke_n 1_o to_o give_v knowledge_n of_o salvation_n to_o his_o people_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v that_o redemption_n of_o christ_n which_o st._n paul_n speak_v of_o 1_o coloss_n 14._o in_o who_o we_o have_v redemption_n through_o his_o blood_n even_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o last_o st._n paul_n sermon_n to_o the_o gentile_n be_v be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o man_n and_o brethren_n that_o through_o this_o man_n jesus_n christ_n be_v preach_v unto_o you_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o he_o all_o that_o believe_v be_v justify_v from_o all_o thing_n from_o which_o you_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n acts._n 13._o and_o therefore_o much_o less_o certain_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n the_o effect_n of_o these_o text_n be_v that_o all_o mankind_n be_v sinner_n be_v conclude_v under_o sin_n be_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v the_o most_o innocent_a person_n be_v not_o except_v all_o without_o exception_n have_v by_o their_o sin_n fall_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n mean_v now_o for_o the_o free_n themselves_o from_o the_o gild_n of_o these_o sin_n they_o have_v none_o nor_o be_v it_o possible_a they_o god_n for_o his_o part_n upon_o account_n of_o this_o mediation_n of_o christ_n promise_v forgiveness_n of_o all_o sin_n to_o all_o true_a penitent_n all_o the_o world_n over_o o_o joyful_a tiding_n these_o what_o ease_n be_v here_o to_o wound_a conscience_n what_o comfort_n to_o despair_a sinner_n what_o encouragement_n to_o all_o man_n every_o where_o to_o repent_v if_o we_o consider_v mankind_n in_o their_o pure_a natural_n and_o as_o without_o christ_n jesus_n this_o plain_o be_v their_o case_n they_o do_v believe_v a_o supreme_a god_n and_o their_o reason_n it_o be_v likely_a will_v tell_v they_o that_o god_n be_v good_a and_o merciful_a but_o yet_o this_o reason_n can_v discover_v no_o more_o than_o god_n general_a goodness_n to_o they_o that_o all_o along_o endeavour_v to_o please_v and_o approve_v themselves_o too_o he_o but_o as_o for_o his_o willingness_n to_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v sinner_n especial_o those_o that_o have_v offend_v he_o by_o very_o grievous_a crime_n or_o live_v in_o a_o long_a habitual_a course_n of_o wickedness_n this_o they_o can_v not_o conclude_v from_o their_o reason_n nay_o if_o they_o do_v reason_n as_o they_o just_o may_v they_o may_v rather_o be_v incline_v to_o believe_v that_o he_o will_v not_o pardon_v such_o criminal_n for_o as_o their_o reason_n tell_v they_o that_o god_n be_v good_a so_o the_o same_o reason_n tell_v they_o that_o he_o be_v just_a and_o have_v a_o infinite_a regard_n to_o the_o honour_n and_o reputation_n of_o his_o law_n which_o law_n their_o own_o conscience_n tell_v they_o they_o have_v heinous_o transgress_v nor_o have_v they_o any_o thing_n wherewith_o to_o compensate_a or_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o the_o transgression_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o what_o can_v they_o expect_v from_o so_o just_a a_o god_n but_o to_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n they_o have_v deserve_v this_o be_v a_o very_a uncomfortable_a reason_v and_o yet_o such_o a_o one_o it_o be_v as_o there_o be_v no_o answer_n to_o be_v give_v to_o in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o therefore_o in_o what_o a_o melancholy_a condition_n be_v mankind_n all_o the_o while_n what_o encouragement_n have_v they_o serious_o to_o set_v upon_o the_o amendment_n of_o their_o wicked_a life_n or_o if_o they_o do_v what_o fruit_n what_o comfort_n can_v they_o promise_v to_o themselves_o by_o such_o a_o amendment_n have_v his_o certain_a promise_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v receive_v and_o lest_o any_o one_o shall_v fear_v the_o divine_a justice_n upon_o account_n that_o there_o be_v no_o satisfaction_n make_v to_o it_o for_o his_o sin_n our_o lord_n have_v take_v care_n to_o remove_v that_o objection_n for_o he_o by_o the_o unvaluable_a merit_n of_o his_o person_n and_o the_o free_a unconstrained_a offer_v up_o of_o himself_o to_o a_o ignominious_a death_n upon_o the_o cross_n on_o the_o behalf_n of_o mankind_n have_v make_v a_o full_a complete_a and_o entire_a satisfaction_n to_o god_n justice_n for_o you_o can_v as_o i_o say_v but_o see_v in_o the_o first_o place_n how_o very_o much_o such_o doctrine_n do_v disparage_v the_o love_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o lessen_v his_o undertake_n for_o whilst_o he_o be_v here_o suppose_a to_o have_v redeem_a we_o only_o from_o his_o father_n wrath_n and_o the_o punishment_n consequent_a thereupon_o leave_v we_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o the_o wickedness_n and_o impurity_n of_o our_o own_o nature_n which_o alone_o without_o the_o accession_n of_o any_o other_o external_a evil_n be_v a_o misery_n great_a enough_o he_o be_v hereby_o render_v but_o half_a a_o saviour_n one_o that_o free_v we_o indeed_o froman_n external_n evil_a but_o leave_v we_o irremediable_o expose_v to_o a_o internal_a one_o as_o grievous_a as_o the_o other_o one_o that_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o a_o gibbet_n or_o a_o executioner_n but_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o cure_v we_o of_o the_o inward_a sickness_n and_o malady_n under_o which_o we_o languish_v but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o what_o a_o absurd_a inconsistent_a notion_n this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n give_v we_o of_o the_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n for_o whilst_o they_o suppose_v that_o a_o man_n under_o the_o power_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v capable_a of_o that_o happiness_n which_o christ_n purchase_v for_o we_o in_o the_o other_o world_n which_o happiness_n as_o both_o scripture_n and_o reason_n testify_v do_v chief_o consist_v in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o excellency_n and_o perfection_n they_o must_v at_o the_o same_o time_n suppose_v that_o a_o man_n may_v berendr_v happy_a by_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o that_o of_o which_o he_o have_v no_o sense_n no_o perception_n or_o rather_o to_o speak_v proper_o that_o he_o be_v the_o happy_a creature_n alive_a in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o a_o object_n to_o which_o he_o have_v the_o great_a aversion_n and_o antipathy_n in_o the_o world_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o absurdity_n i_o know_v not_o what_o be_v when_o light_n can_v have_v communion_n with_o darkness_n when_o god_n can_v have_v fellowship_n with_o belial_n then_o and_o not_o till_o then_o can_v a_o wicked_a man_n a_o man_n that_o live_v in_o sin_n and_o love_v it_o be_v capable_a of_o that_o happiness_n which_o jesus_n christ_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o iv_o the_o four_o thing_n i_o shall_v speak_v to_o from_o this_o text_n be_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o our_o saviour_n bring_v to_o pass_v the_o great_a end_n of_o his_o appearance_n viz._n the_o put_v away_o of_o sin_n which_o mean_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o now_o once_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n have_v he_o appear_v to_o put_v away_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o two_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v in_o order_n to_o a_o just_a discourse_n upon_o this_o point_n first_o to_o give_v a_o account_n how_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o mean_n for_o the_o put_v away_o of_o sin_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n i_o give_v that_o be_v the_o procure_v the_o pardon_n of_o it_o second_o how_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n of_o put_v it_o away_o in_o the_o other_o sense_n that_o be_v the_o destroy_n or_o mortify_v it_o in_o we_o but_o these_o thing_n be_v foreign_a to_o our_o present_a business_n and_o more_o proper_a for_o the_o argument_n of_o a_o good-friday_n sermon_n i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o of_o they_o but_o proceed_v to_o my_o last_o point_n v._o the_o five_o and_o last_o thing_n observable_a from_o the_o text_n be_v the_o difference_n of_o christ_n sacrifice_n whereby_o he_o put_v away_o sin_n from_o the_o moysaicall_a one_o which_o difference_n so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v here_o take_v in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n the_o apostle_n in_o this_o chapter_n be_v discourse_v of_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n and_o as_o to_o that_o point_n he_o insist_o much_o on_o the_o difference_n of_o their_o sacrifice_n the_o christian_n that_o own_v the_o gospel_n have_v but_o one_o sacrifice_n the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n once_o offer_v whereas_o those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n be_v force_v to_o have_v many_o nay_o even_o the_o most_o solemn_a sacrifice_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o their_o sin_n be_v repeat_v once_o a_o year_n as_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o verse_n before_o my_o text._n but_o now_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n which_o he_o put_v by_o way_n of_o opposition_n to_o they_o that_o be_v but_o once_o offer_v and_o be_v never_o to_o be_v repeat_v this_o be_v the_o point_n with_o which_o he_o conclude_v this_o chapter_n two_o verse_n after_o my_o text_n christ_n say_v he_o be_v once_o offer_v to_o bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o and_o unto_o they_o that_o look_v for_o he_o shall_v he_o appear_v the_o second_o time_n unto_o salvation_n this_o
