so_o it_o belong_v to_o he_o actual_o to_o punish_v or_o to_o remit_v punishment_n and_o thus_o his_o pardon_n be_v not_o to_o punish_v yet_o not_o simple_o not_o to_o punish_v but_o not_o to_o punish_v one_o that_o deserve_v it_o this_o i_o call_v for_o distinction_n sake_n executive_a pardon_n now_o i_o conceive_v that_o the_o word_n justification_n have_v principal_a respect_n to_o the_o obligation_n and_o sentence_n and_o less_o to_o the_o punishment_n but_o the_o word_n remission_n more_o emphatical_o connote_v the_o punishment_n than_o the_o obligation_n dissolve_v and_o yet_o the_o obligation_n more_o than_o the_o sentence_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o this_o reverend_a author_n do_v sometime_o look_v only_o at_o the_o executive_a remission_n in_o his_o consectary_n sometime_o at_o the_o legal_a remission_n and_o sometime_o he_o join_v they_o together_o as_o one_o and_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o this_o last_o be_v the_o full_a end_n and_o perfection_n of_o both_o the_o former_a and_o the_o former_a be_v both_o but_o mean_n to_o this_o therefore_o do_v god_n give_v we_o pardon_v and_o judge_v we_o pardon_v that_o we_o may_v escape_v the_o penalty_n and_o live_v the_o reverend_a author_n call_v this_o the_o ultimate_a term_n and_o the_o dissolve_v of_o the_o obligation_n the_o near_a which_o may_v admit_v of_o a_o double_a sense_n either_o as_o this_o species_n of_o executive_a pardon_n be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o foresay_a species_n of_o pardon_n or_o as_o impunity_n enter_v the_o definition_n of_o the_o donative_n or_o legal_a sort_n of_o pardon_n and_o so_o it_o be_v not_o consider_v in_o esse_fw-la existenti_fw-la as_o in_o executive_a pardon_n it_o be_v but_o as_o future_a and_o in_o esse_fw-la volito_fw-la and_o so_o as_o gild_n or_o obligation_n to_o punishment_n which_o be_v all_o one_o be_v the_o near_a term_n specify_v this_o sort_n of_o pardon_n so_o impunity_n be_v the_o remote_a term_n see_v the_o obligation_n dissolve_v be_v a_o obligation_n to_o punishment_n reader_n here_o be_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v obvious_a and_o beyond_o question_n for_o the_o truth_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v but_o the_o skill_n to_o use_v the_o key_n of_o this_o distinction_n of_o remission_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o some_o dubious_a passage_n in_o the_o exercitation_n it_o will_v prevent_v thy_o misunderstanding_n and_o i_o suppose_v thy_o wrong_v of_o the_o author_n and_o thy_o causeless_a offence_n chap._n 4._o p._n 10._o where_o he_o say_v that_o gild_n be_v take_v sometime_o for_o the_o punishment_n itself_o i_o confess_v i_o have_v not_o observe_v so_o much_o nor_o yet_o do_v so_o chap._n 5._o p._n 12._o nor_o do_v i_o suppose_v that_o the_o reatus_fw-la redundans_fw-la in_o personam_fw-la contain_v punishment_n itself_o but_o only_o connote_v it_o as_o the_o term_n of_o the_o obligation_n therefore_o when_o chap._n 4._o p._n 10._o he_o say_v pardon_n be_v not_o a_o free_v we_o from_o the_o simple_a gild_n and_o defect_n i_o shall_v to_o avoid_v misunderstanding_n have_v leave_v out_o the_o word_n guilt_n and_o say_v only_o it_o be_v the_o free_v we_o from_o the_o desert_n because_o i_o deserve_v it_o as_o he_o be_v 2._o guilty_a of_o punishment_n that_o be_v oblige_v to_o it_o and_o he_o be_v 3._o guilty_a of_o the_o fault_n simple_o consider_v who_o do_v indeed_o commit_v it_o distinguish_v of_o these_o three_o well_o and_o you_o will_v also_o be_v the_o better_a able_a to_o understand_v some_o dubious_a application_n of_o the_o reatus_fw-la simplicis_fw-la et_fw-la reatus_fw-la culpae_fw-la which_o you_o after_o here_o meet_v with_o as_o to_o c._n 18._o n._n 4._o p._n 33._o i_o conceive_v that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n that_o oblige_v believer_n to_o punishment_n for_o a_o gross_a sin_n and_o so_o it_o do_v for_o the_o small_a that_o this_o obligation_n be_v a_o make_v he_o guilty_a of_o death_n in_o general_n but_o not_o of_o the_o loss_n of_o former_a pardon_n in_o specie_fw-la and_o that_o as_o pardon_n be_v a_o benefit_n of_o the_o new_a convenant_n which_o the_o old_a know_v not_o so_o the_o loss_n of_o pardon_n be_v a_o penalty_n threaten_v by_o the_o new_a covenant_n proper_o though_o i_o suppose_v god_n suffer_v none_o to_o fall_v under_o that_o penalty_n that_o be_v actual_o pardon_v as_o to_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n when_o ch._n 23._o cons_n 17._o he_o dedeny_v justification_n to_o be_v a_o change_n mere_o relative_n his_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o be_v the_o same_o with_o remission_n and_o remission_n be_v a_o real_a change_n viz._n not_o punish_v ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n but_o note_n 1_o that_o he_o explain_v himself_o to_o speak_v only_o of_o executive_a remission_n which_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o other_o two_o sort_n 2._o i_o think_v executive_a remission_n be_v not_o usual_o call_v justification_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v still_o say_v that_o to_o deprive_v the_o church_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o they_o nay_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v no_o small_a gain_n that_o many_o will_v receive_v by_o it_o so_o far_o be_o i_o from_o damn_v explode_v or_o contemn_v every_o thing_n that_o have_v somewhat_o disagreeable_a to_o my_o opinion_n doubtless_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o useful_a to_o ordinary_a christian_n to_o see_v the_o nature_n of_o pardon_n more_o plain_o and_o to_o see_v such_o clear_a reason_n for_o a_o necessity_n of_o our_o daily_a pray_v for_o pardon_n yea_o for_o pardon_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n that_o be_v before_o pardon_v and_o to_o see_v providential_a castigatory_a punishment_n so_o well_o reconcile_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n for_o the_o same_o sin_n and_o to_o see_v such_o full_a evidence_n for_o a_o necessity_n of_o holy_a fear_n &_o work_v out_o our_o savaltion_n yet_o without_o ascribe_v any_o merit_n unto_o man_n to_o see_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o necessity_n that_o the_o promise_n of_o our_o continue_a and_o final_a justification_n shall_v be_v on_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o perseverance_n and_o so_o that_o continue_a and_o final_a justification_n be_v but_o conditional_a and_o this_o not_o only_o consistent_a with_o the_o certain_a perseverance_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o also_o the_o ordinate_a rational_a mean_n of_o their_o perseverance_n to_o see_v the_o imperfection_n of_o that_o remission_n and_o justification_n which_o we_o have_v in_o this_o life_n beyond_o all_o reasonable_a exception_n manifest_v with_o many_o the_o like_a point_n i_o conceive_v will_v have_v much_o influence_n on_o man_n affection_n and_o practice_n and_o free_v they_o from_o some_o mistake_n that_o do_v no_o whit_n befriend_v their_o grace_n nor_o a_o godly_a life_n but_o i_o must_v from_o experience_n advise_v the_o reverend_a author_n to_o expect_v the_o offence_n of_o some_o the_o bitter_a censure_n of_o other_o and_o perhaps_o to_o be_v scorn_v and_o snarl_a at_o if_o not_o be_v worry_v by_o some_o of_o the_o fautour_n of_o the_o libertine_n sect_n or_o some_o that_o make_v a_o trade_n of_o voluminous_a disputation_n if_o they_o find_v he_o not_o in_o their_o road_n they_o may_v seek_v he_o by_o a_o digression_n and_o such_o man_n be_v never_o out_o of_o their_o way_n if_o i_o may_v advise_v he_o unless_o they_o convince_v he_o of_o some_o mistake_n to_o be_v revoke_v he_o shall_v hear_v they_o as_o if_o he_o hear_v they_o not_o and_o never_o think_v of_o word_v it_o with_o they_o but_o suffer_v they_o to_o ease_v themselves_o without_o contradiction_n and_o leave_v the_o success_n of_o his_o labour_n to_o god_n the_o lord_n pity_v his_o poor_a divide_v imperfect_a church_n and_o acquaint_v the_o guide_n with_o the_o necessity_n of_o its_o unity_n and_o those_o principle_n which_o have_v a_o tendency_n to_o the_o heal_n of_o our_o breach_n and_o pour_v out_o more_o adundance_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o illumination_n
there_o also_o acknowledge_v that_o albeit_o we_o be_v adopt_v and_o regenerate_v so_o soon_o as_o we_o be_v believer_n nevertheless_o the_o time_n of_o our_o adoption_n and_o regeneration_n be_v not_o in_o some_o sense_n afore_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n because_o afore_o that_o time_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v complete_v in_o soul_n and_o body_n nor_o the_o benefit_n of_o they_o as_o to_o the_o whole_a man_n full_o enjoy_v as_o appear_v rom._n 8.23_o matth._n 19.26_o 2._o the_o reinvestment_n or_o restauration_n of_o a_o sinner_n into_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v as_o be_v aforesaid_a the_o positive_a part_n of_o pardon_n who_o will_v say_v to_o the_o contrary_a but_o that_o a_o sinner_n may_v grow_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o that_o the_o saint_n now_o triumphant_a in_o heaven_n be_v more_o in_o god_n favour_n or_o do_v enjoy_v more_o of_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n than_o they_o be_v or_o do_v be_v sinner_n militant_a here_o on_o earth_n yea_o christ_n himself_o though_o no_o sinner_n be_v say_v to_o grow_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n luke_n 2.52_o quest._n 2._o how_o far_o forth_o or_o in_o what_o sense_n may_v it_o be_v say_v that_o a_o sinner_n do_v receive_v a_o present_a pardon_n immediate_o upon_o the_o confession_n of_o his_o sin_n answ_n though_o this_o question_n be_v a_o different_a question_n from_o the_o former_a and_o have_v more_o difficulty_n in_o it_o nevertheless_o a_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o premise_n touch_v the_o quiddity_n or_o true_a nature_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n will_v enable_v we_o to_o make_v a_o unerring_a answer_n as_o i_o suppose_v thereunto_o and_o unto_o the_o say_a question_n therefore_o i_o reply_v that_o a_o sinner_n in_o or_o upon_o the_o confession_n of_o his_o sin_n do_v instant_o enjoy_v the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n three_o way_n or_o in_o a_o threefold_a sense_n or_o for_o as_o much_o as_o do_v amount_v to_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o the_o sinner_n be_v immediate_o discharge_v deliver_v or_o disoblige_v from_o that_o wrath_n to_o come_v as_o be_v the_o apostle_n phrase_n 1_o thes_n 1.10_o or_o from_o be_v actual_o bind_v over_o to_o eternal_a damnation_n or_o the_o condemn_a power_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o or_o in_o the_o phrase_n of_o the_o prophet_n micah_n chap._n 7.19_o subdue_v as_o sin_n have_v a_o command_a power_n over_o the_o sinner_n enslave_v he_o to_o its_o service_n so_o likewise_o it_o have_v a_o condemn_a power_n upon_o the_o sinner_n which_o power_n be_v immediate_o take_v away_o so_o soon_o as_o sin_n be_v in_o a_o scripture_n sense_n way_n or_o manner_n confess_v have_v mention_v these_o two_o power_n of_o sin_n let_v i_o crave_v leave_n to_o interpose_v this_o one_o thing_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o by_o the_o by_o viz_o that_o when_o we_o read_v in_o the_o writing_n of_o saint_n paul_n or_o in_o any_o other_o scripture_n concern_v the_o reign_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n we_o must_v have_v a_o special_a regard_n to_o the_o context_n if_o we_o will_v right_o interpret_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n concern_v which_o of_o these_o two_o power_n of_o sin_n he_o speak_v for_o i_o be_o half_o mind_v that_o some_o text_n of_o scripture_n be_v common_o interpret_v one_o way_n when_o upon_o a_o more_o through_o consideration_n we_o shall_v find_v reason_n rather_o to_o interpret_v they_o another_o especial_o that_o in_o rom._n 6.14_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o which_o be_v common_o interpret_v concern_v the_o command_a power_n of_o sin_n &_o i_o think_v be_v intend_v by_o the_o apostle_n concern_v the_o damn_v power_n thereof_o that_o power_n or_o strength_n which_o he_o elsewhere_o say_v sin_n have_v by_o the_o to_o its_o command_a power_n over_o we_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o with_o respect_n to_o its_o damn_v power_n over_o we_o the_o law_n of_o death_n the_o apostle_n do_v mention_n in_o one_o place_n rom._n 8.2_o the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n in_o christ_n jesus_n i.e._n the_o live_n or_o quicken_a spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n have_v make_v i_o free_a from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o work_n and_o those_o who_o by_o the_o law_n of_o death_n do_v here_o understand_v the_o law_n of_o work_n do_v not_o vary_v as_o i_o suppose_v from_o the_o interpretation_n which_o i_o have_v here_o give_v see_v that_o sin_n have_v its_o condemn_a power_n from_o or_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o law_n of_o work_n deah_a i._n e._n from_o sin_n which_o do_v as_o a_o law_n command_v &_o condemn_v this_o last_o particular_a be_v consider_v do_v make_v i_o bold_o yet_o humble_o to_o offer_v this_o as_o a_o rule_n viz._n that_o when_o god_n do_v exhort_v we_o not_o to_o suffer_v sin_n to_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o then_o and_o there_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o command_a power_n of_o sin_n but_o when_o he_o promise_v on_o his_o part_n that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o then_o and_o there_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o condemn_a power_n of_o sin_n the_o former_a be_v man_n duty_n be_v fit_a matter_n for_o a_o command_n the_o latter_a be_v god_n mercy_n be_v fit_a matter_n for_o a_o promise_n yet_o let_v i_o add_v these_o two_o thing_n in_o the_o way_n of_o caution_n 1._o i_o do_v acknowledge_v that_o the_o usual_a interpretation_n of_o rom._n 6.14_o which_o i_o do_v for_o the_o reason_n aforesaid_a dissent_n from_o be_v a_o misinterpretation_n if_o indeed_o such_o of_o no_o dangerous_a consequence_n because_o these_o two_o power_n of_o sin_n like_o hypocrates_n his_o twin_n do_v decay_n and_o flourish_v do_v live_v and_o die_v and_o revive_v together_o i_o mean_v if_o or_o whensoever_o the_o one_o do_v revive_v the_o other_o do_v revive_v also_o now_o in_o such_o case_n i_o think_v it_o my_o duty_n however_o to_o offer_v what_o strength_n of_o reason_n or_o scripture_n i_o have_v for_o my_o own_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n nevertheless_o not_o much_o or_o stiff_o to_o contend_v with_o any_o man_n of_o a_o contrary_a mind_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o spirit_n of_o meekness_n to_o suffer_v every_o man_n to_o abound_v in_o his_o own_o sense_n according_a to_o the_o analogy_n or_o proportion_n of_o faith_n from_o which_o those_o do_v not_o vary_v who_o do_v understand_v grace_n to_o perform_v duty_n and_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n psal_n 25.7_o 18._o and_o 51.9_o and_o i_o think_v beside_o other_o reason_n e.g._n 1._o then_o shall_v no_o christian_a ever_o mention_v original_a sin_n in_o his_o confession_n to_o god_n have_v once_o in_o his_o life_n acknowledge_v it_o 2._o if_o we_o may_v infer_v from_o the_o text_n in_o hand_n that_o sin_n be_v but_o once_o to_o be_v confess_v because_o the_o apostle_n say_v if_o we_o confess_v our_o sin_n god_n be_v faithful_a and_o just_a to_o forgive_v we_o why_o may_v we_o not_o by_o a_o like_a reason_n conclude_v that_o we_o be_v but_o once_o in_o our_o life_n to_o pray_v to_o god_n because_o the_o apostle_n say_v whosoever_o shall_v call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v save_v rom._n 10.13_o beside_o
