light_n it_o be_v true_a he_o die_v to_o procure_v our_o pardon_n too_o but_o it_o be_v with_o respect_n to_o a_o far_a end_n namely_o that_o we_o may_v not_o grow_v desperate_a with_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o guilt_n but_o that_o by_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n which_o he_o have_v purchase_v for_o we_o we_o may_v be_v encourage_v to_o repent_v and_o amend_v but_o shall_v he_o have_v procure_v a_o pardon_n for_o our_o sin_n whether_o we_o have_v repent_v of_o it_o or_o no_o he_o will_v have_v only_o skin_v over_o a_o wound_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_o cure_v will_v rankle_v of_o its_o own_o accord_n into_o a_o incurable_a gangrene_n christ_n therefore_o by_o the_o offering_n of_o himself_o be_v say_v to_o purge_v our_o conscience_n from_o dead_a work_n that_o we_o may_v serve_v the_o live_a god_n heb._n ix_o 14._o and_o the_o great_a apostle_n make_v the_o ultimate_a intention_n of_o his_o give_a himself_o for_o we_o to_o be_v this_o that_o he_o may_v redeem_v we_o from_o all_o iniquity_n and_o purify_v to_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n zealous_a of_o good_a work_n tit._n two_o 14._o and_o until_o his_o death_n have_v have_v this_o effect_n upon_o we_o it_o be_v not_o all_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n that_o can_v release_v we_o from_o the_o direful_a punishment_n of_o the_o other_o life_n for_o unless_o he_o into_o the_o other_o world_n prove_v a_o perpetual_a hell_n and_o torment_n to_o we_o so_o that_o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o the_o great_a and_o ultimate_a design_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o to_o hide_v our_o filthy_a sore_n but_o to_o heal_v and_o cure_v they_o and_o for_o this_o end_v it_o be_v that_o he_o reveal_v to_o we_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n from_o heaven_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o deny_v ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n and_o to_o live_v sober_o and_o righteous_o and_o godly_a in_o this_o present_a world_n tit._n two_o 12._o let_v we_o not_o therefore_o cheat_v our_o own_o soul_n by_o think_v that_o the_o gospel_n require_v nothing_o of_o we_o but_o only_o to_o be_v holy_a by_o proxy_n righteous_a by_o be_v clothe_v in_o the_o garment_n of_o another_o righteousness_n as_o if_o its_o design_n be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o cure_v as_o cover_v our_o filthy_a sore_n not_o to_o make_v we_o whole_a but_o to_o make_v we_o account_v so_o for_o can_v any_o man_n imagine_v a_o notion_n and_o do_v not_o at_o last_o amount_v unto_o a_o reality_n as_o if_o the_o great_a design_n of_o his_o come_n down_o from_o heaven_n to_o live_v and_o die_v for_o we_o be_v only_o to_o make_v a_o cloak_n for_o our_o sin_n wherein_o we_o may_v appear_v righteous_a before_o god_n without_o be_v so_o but_o do_v not_o deceive_v yourselves_o it_o be_v not_o all_o the_o innocence_n and_o obedience_n of_o christ_n life_n nor_o all_o the_o virtue_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n that_o can_v render_v you_o pure_a and_o holy_a in_o god_n eye_n unless_o you_o real_o be_v so_o and_o you_o may_v as_o well_o be_v well_o with_o another_o health_n or_o wise_a with_o another_o wisdom_n as_o righteous_a before_o god_n with_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n while_o you_o abide_v in_o your_o sin_n for_o god_n see_v you_o as_o you_o be_v and_o the_o most_o glorious_a disguise_n you_o can_v appear_v in_o before_o he_o will_v never_o be_v able_a to_o delude_v his_o all-seeing_a eye_n so_o as_o to_o make_v he_o account_v you_o righteous_a when_o you_o be_v not_o and_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o you_o to_o impose_v upon_o god_n yet_o unless_o you_o can_v also_o impose_v upon_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o by_o fancy_v they_o to_o be_v otherwise_o than_o they_o be_v make_v they_o to_o be_v what_o they_o be_v not_o it_o will_v be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o if_o you_o can_v be_v clothe_v in_o christ_n righteousness_n while_o you_o continue_v wicked_a it_o will_v signify_v no_o more_o to_o your_o happiness_n than_o it_o will_v to_o be_v clothe_v in_o a_o most_o splendid_a garment_n while_o you_o be_v pine_v with_o famine_n or_o torture_v with_o the_o gout_n or_o strangury_n wherefore_o as_o we_o love_v our_o own_o soul_n and_o will_v not_o betray_v ourselves_o into_o a_o irrecoverable_a ruin_n let_v we_o firm_o conclude_v with_o ourselves_o that_o the_o great_a design_n of_o our_o religion_n be_v internal_a holiness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o that_o without_o this_o all_o that_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o we_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o contribute_v to_o our_o happiness_n that_o it_o will_v prove_v a_o eternal_a aggravation_n to_o our_o misery_n and_o that_o all_o that_o precious_a blood_n which_o he_o shed_v in_o our_o behalf_n will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o obtain_v pardon_n and_o eternal_a happiness_n for_o we_o that_o it_o will_v arise_v in_o judgement_n against_o we_o and_o like_o the_o innocent_a blood_n of_o abel_n instead_o of_o intercede_v for_o we_o will_v cry_v down_o vengeance_n from_o heaven_n
