repentance_n and_o go_v forth_o from_o his_o wicked_a way_n and_o not_o at_o all_o regard_n the_o power_n and_o honour_n of_o the_o world_n and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v require_v will_v forsake_v and_o disesteem_v all_o thing_n for_o true_a repentance_n sake_n and_o take_v such_o a_o earnest_a firm_a and_o strong_a resolution_n that_o he_o will_v never_o go_v forth_o from_o it_o again_o up_o to_o it_o than_o thou_o be_v dead_a to_o thyself_o in_o thy_o will_n and_o love_n will_v then_o be_v the_o life_n of_o thy_o nature_n it_o kill_v thou_o not_o but_o quicken_v thou_o according_a to_o its_o life_n &_o then_o thou_o live_v yet_o not_o to_o thy_o own_o will_n but_o to_o its_o will_n for_o thy_o will_n become_v its_o will_n and_o then_o thou_o be_v dead_a to_o thyself_o but_o live_v to_o god_n the_o scholar_n 31._o how_o be_v it_o that_o so_o few_o find_v it_o when_o all_o will_v so_o fain_o have_v it_o the_o master_n they_o all_o seek_v it_o in_o something_o viz._n in_o a_o imaginary_a opinion_n in_o self-desire_n whereto_o almost_o all_o have_v a_o peculiar_a natural_a lust_n or_o inclination_n &_o tho_o love_n shall_v proffer_v itself_o to_o they_o it_o will_v find_v no_o place_n in_o they_o because_o the_o imaginarinesse_n that_o be_v in_o their_o own_o will_n have_v set_v itself_o in_o the_o place_n thereof_o and_o so_o the_o imaginarinesse_n of_o selfe-lust_n will_v have_v the_o love_n in_o it_o but_o love_n fly_v away_o for_o it_o dwell_v only_o in_o nothing_o and_o therefore_o they_o find_v it_o not_o the_o scholar_n 32._o what_o be_v the_o office_n of_o it_o in_o nothing_o the_o master_n it_o be_v office_n be_v to_o penetrate_v without_o intermission_n into_o something_o and_o if_o it_o find_v a_o place_n in_o something_o which_o stand_v still_o than_o its_o office_n be_v to_o take_v possession_n thereof_o and_o to_o rejoice_v therein_o with_o its_o flame_a fire_n of_o love_n more_o than_o the_o sun_n in_o this_o world_n and_o without_o intermission_n to_o kindle_v a_o fire_n in_o something_o and_o to_o consume_v the_o something_o and_o to_o over-enflame_a itself_o therewith_o the_o scholar_n 33._o o_o love_a master_n how_o shall_v i_o understand_v this_o the_o master_n if_o it_o may_v but_o kindle_v a_o fire_n in_o thou_o thou_o shall_v feel_v how_o it_o consume_v thy_o self_n which_o thou_o call_v i_o and_o rejoice_v so_o exceed_o in_o thy_o fire_n that_o thou_o will_v rather_o suffer_v thyself_o to_o be_v kill_v then_o to_o enter_v again_o into_o thy_o something_a its_o flame_n also_o be_v so_o great_a that_o it_o will_v not_o leave_v thou_o though_o it_o shall_v cost_v thy_o temporal_a life_n it_o will_v go_v with_o thou_o in_o its_o fire_n into_o death_n and_o if_o thou_o wente_v into_o hell_n it_o will_v break_v hell_n in_o piece_n for_o thy_o sake_n the_o scholar_n 34_o love_v master_n i_o can_v no_o more_o endure_v any_o thing_n shall_v divert_v i_o how_o shall_v i_o find_v the_o near_a way_n to_o it_o the_o master_n where_o the_o way_n be_v hard_a there_o walk_v thou_o and_o take_v up_o what_o the_o world_n reject_v and_o what_o the_o world_n do_v that_o do_v not_o thou_o walk_v contrary_a to_o the_o world_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o then_o thou_o come_v the_o near_a way_n to_o it_o the_o scholar_n 35._o if_o i_o shall_v walk_v contrary_a to_o every_o thing_n i_o must_v needs_o be_v in_o mere_a misery_n and_o unquietness_n and_o i_o shall_v also_o be_v account_v a_o fool_n the_o master_n i_o do_v not_o bid_v thou_o do_v harm_n to_o any_o but_o because_o the_o world_n love_v only_a deceit_n and_o vanity_n and_o walk_v in_o false_a and_o wicked_a way_n therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v act_v a_o clean_a contrary_a part_n to_o the_o way_n thereof_o in_o all_o thing_n walk_v only_o in_o the_o right_a way_n for_o the_o right_a way_n be_v contrary_a to_o all_o the_o way_n of_o the_o world_n but_o that_o thou_o â—aist_v thou_o shall_v be_v in_o mere_a anguish_n and_o trouble_n that_o indeed_o will_v be_v so_o according_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o it_o will_v give_v thou_o occasion_n of_o continual_a repentance_n and_o in_o such_o anxiety_n the_o love_n must_v willing_o kindle_v its_o fire_n that_o thou_o say_v also_o thou_o shall_v be_v account_v a_o â—illy_a fool_n be_v true_a for_o the_o way_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v solly_a to_o the_o world_n but_o wisdom_n to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n when_o the_o world_n perceive_v this_o fire_n of_o love_n in_o the_o child_n of_o god_n it_o faith_n they_o be_v turn_v fool_n but_o to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n it_o be_v the_o great_a treasure_n so_n great_a that_o no_o life_n can_v express_v it_o nor_o tongue_n so_o much_o as_o name_v what_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o inflame_a love_n of_o god_n be_v it_o be_v bright_a white_a than_o the_o sun_n and_o sweet_a than_o any_o thing_n it_o be_v far_o more_o strengthen_v nourish_a than_o any_o meat_n or_o drink_v and_o more_o pleasant_a than_o all_o the_o joy_n of_o this_o world_n whosoever_o get_v this_o be_v rich_a than_o any_o king_n on_o earth_n more_o noble_a than_o any_o emperor_n can_v be_v and_o more_o potent_a and_o strong_a than_o all_o authority_n and_o power_n the_o scholar_n 36._o then_o the_o scholar_n ask_v his_o master_n further_o say_v whether_o go_v the_o soul_n when_o the_o body_n die_v be_v it_o either_o man_n save_v or_o damn_a the_o master_n his_o master_n answer_v it_o need_v no_o go_v forth_o only_o the_o outward_a mortal_a life_n with_o the_o body_n do_v separate_v themselves_o from_o the_o soul_n the_o soul_n have_v heaven_n and_o hell_n in_o itself_o before_o as_o it_o be_v write_v the_o kingdom_n
if_o it_o will_v whole_o yield_v itself_o to_o death_n and_o cease_v to_o be_v a_o creature_n any_o more_o and_o so_o do_v yield_v itself_o to_o death_n and_o desire_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o die_v and_o perish_v in_o the_o death_n of_o its_o redeemer_n jesus_n christ_n who_o have_v suffer_v such_o torment_n and_o death_n for_o it_o sink_v and_o in_o this_o perish_v it_o begin_v to_o sigh_v and_o pray_v in_o itself_o very_o inward_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o to_o sink_v down_o into_o the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o there_o appear_v unto_o it_o the_o amiable_a countenance_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o penetrate_v through_o it_o as_o a_o great_a light_n by_o which_o it_o grow_v exceed_o joyful_a and_o begin_v to_o pray_v aright_o and_o to_o thank_v the_o most_o high_a for_o this_o grace_n and_o to_o rejoice_v exceed_o that_o it_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o death_n and_o anguish_n of_o hell_n and_o there_o it_o taste_v of_o the_o sweetness_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o promise_a truth_n and_o in_o that_o very_a instant_n all_o evil_a spirit_n which_o have_v afflict_v it_o before_o and_o keep_v it_o back_o from_o the_o grace_n love_v and_o inward_a presence_n of_o god_n be_v force_v to_o depart_v from_o it_o and_o the_o wedding_n of_o the_o lamb_n be_v keep_v and_o solemnize_v with_o the_o espouse_v or_o contract_n of_o the_o noble_a sophia_n with_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o seal-ring_n of_o christ_n victory_n be_v impress_v or_o print_v or_o set_v upon_o its_o substance_n or_o into_o its_o essence_n and_o it_o be_v receive_v to_o be_v a_o child_n and_o heir_n of_o god_n again_o when_o this_o be_v do_v the_o soul_n become_v very_o joyful_a and_o begin_v to_o work_v in_o this_o power_n and_o to_o celebrate_v with_o praise_n the_o wonder_n of_o god_n &_o think_v henceforth_o to_o walk_v continual_o in_o this_o power_n strength_n and_o joy_n but_o it_o be_v assault_v from_o without_o or_o outward_o by_o the_o shame_n and_o reproach_n of_o the_o world_n and_o within_o by_o great_a temptation_n so_o that_o it_o begin_v to_o doubt_v whether_o its_o ground_n be_v from_o god_n or_o no_o and_o whether_o it_o have_v real_o and_o true_o partake_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n or_o no_o for_o the_o accuser_n or_o satan_n go_v to_o it_o and_o will_v lead_v it_o out_o of_o this_o way_n and_o make_v it_o doubtful_a of_o its_o way_n and_o say_v to_o it_o inward_o the_o accuser_n or_o satan_n speak_v to_o the_o soul_n say_v it_o be_v not_o of_o god_n it_o be_v but_o thy_o imagination_n also_o the_o divine_a light_n retire_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o shine_v but_o in_o the_o inward_a ground_n as_o light_v in_o embers_o or_o fire_n rake_v up_o in_o ash_n so_o that_o reason_n be_v sol_o to_o itself_o and_o think_v itself_o forsake_v and_o the_o soul_n know_v not_o what_o have_v happen_v to_o itself_o nor_o whether_o it_o be_v true_a that_o it_o have_v taste_v the_o divine_a light_n of_o grace_n or_o not_o and_o yet_o it_o can_v not_o leave_v off_o struggle_a for_o the_o burn_a fire_n of_o love_n be_v sow_v in_o it_o by_o which_o there_o arise_v in_o it_o a_o great_a hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o the_o divine_a sweetness_n and_o now_o at_o length_n begin_v to_o pray_v aright_o and_o to_o humble_v itself_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o to_o examine_v and_o try_v its_o evil_a inclination_n in_o its_o thought_n and_o to_o put_v they_o away_o by_o which_o the_o will_n of_o reason_n be_v break_v and_o the_o evil_a inbred_a innate_a or_o native_a inclination_n be_v kill_v and_o destroy_v more_o and_o more_o and_o this_o be_v very_o woeful_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o body_n for_o it_o make_v it_o faint_a feeble_a and_o weak_a as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v very_o sick_a and_o yet_o it_o be_v no_o natural_a sickness_n that_o it_o have_v but_o it_o be_v the_o melancholy_a of_o the_o eatthly_a nature_n of_o the_o body_n because_o its_o evil_a lust_n be_v destroy_v and_o when_o the_o earthly_a reason_n find_v itself_o thus_o forsake_v &_o the_o poor_a soul_n see_v that_o it_o be_v deride_v outward_o and_o despise_v by_o the_o world_n because_o it_o will_v now_o walk_v no_o more_o in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a and_o that_o it_o be_v inward_o assault_v by_o the_o accuser_n satan_n who_o also_o mock_v it_o and_o continual_o set_v before_o it_o the_o beauty_n riches_n and_o glory_n of_o the_o world_n and_o esteem_v the_o soul_n foolish_a that_o embrace_v they_o not_o which_o make_v the_o soul_n think_v thus_o with_o itself_o o_o eternal_a god_n what_o shall_v i_o now_o do_v to_o come_v to_o rest_n the_o enlighten_v soul_n meet_v it_o again_o while_o it_o be_v in_o this_o consideration_n the_o enlighten_v soul_n meet_v with_o it_o again_o and_o say_v what_o ail_v thou_o my_o brother_n that_o thou_o be_v so_o heavy_a and_o sad_a the_o distress_a soul_n say_v i_o have_v follow_v thy_o counsel_n and_o thereby_o attain_v a_o ray_n look_v or_o glimpse_n of_o the_o divine_a sweetness_n but_o it_o be_v go_v from_o i_o again_o and_o i_o be_o now_o forsake_v and_o outward_o have_v very_o great_a trial_n and_o affliction_n in_o the_o world_n for_o all_o my_o good_a friend_n forsake_v i_o and_o scorn_v i_o and_o also_o inward_o i_o be_o assault_v with_o anguish_n and_o doubt_v and_o i_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v the_o enlighten_v soul_n say_v now_o i_o like_v thou_o very_o well_o for_o now_o our_o belove_a lord_n jesus_n christ_n walk_v in_o his_o journey_n pilgrimage_n on_o earth_n with_o thou_o and_o in_o thou_o as_o he_o do_v himself_o when_o he_o be_v in_o this_o world_n be_v always_o revile_v slander_v and_o evil_a speak_v of_o and_o have_v nothing_o of_o his_o own_o and_o now_o thou_o bear_v his_o mark_n or_o ensign_n but_o do_v not_o wonder_v at_o it_o nor_o think_v it_o strange_a for_o it_o must_v be_v so_o that_o thou_o must_v be_v try_v refine_a and_o purify_v in_o this_o anguish_n and_o distress_n thou_o shall_v have_v often_o cause_v to_o pray_v and_o hunger_n after_o deliverance_n and_o in_o thy_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n thou_o attract_a grace_n to_o thou_o from_o within_o and_o from_o without_o for_o thou_o must_v grow_v from_o above_o and_o from_o beneath_o to_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n again_o and_o as_o a_o young_a plant_n be_v stir_v by_o the_o wind_n and_o must_v stand_v in_o heat_n and_o cold_a draw_v strength_n and_o virtue_n to_o it_o from_o above_o and_o from_o beneath_o by_o that_o stir_a and_o must_v endure_v many_o a_o tempest_n and_o undergo_v much_o danger_n before_o it_o can_v come_v to_o be_v a_o tree_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n for_o in_o that_o stir_a the_o virtue_n of_o the_o sun_n come_v to_o move_v in_o it_o whereby_o the_o wild_a property_n of_o that_o plant_n come_v to_o be_v penetrate_v and_o tincture_v or_o qualify_a with_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o grow_v thereby_o and_o now_o be_v the_o time_n wherein_o thou_o must_v behave_v thyself_o as_o a_o valiant_a soldier_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o cooperate_v with_o it_o thyself_o for_o now_o the_o eternal_a father_n by_o his_o fiery_a power_n beget_v his_o son_n in_o thou_o who_o change_v the_o fire_n of_o the_o father_n or_o the_o wrath_n into_o the_o flame_n of_o love_n so_o that_o out_o of_o fire_n and_o light_n viz._n wrath_n and_o love_n there_o come_v to_o be_v one_o essence_n be_v or_o substance_n which_o be_v the_o true_a temple_n of_o god_n and_o now_o thou_o shall_v bud_v forth_o out_o of_o the_o vine_n
