though_o brief_o in_o regard_n so_o much_o on_o this_o subject_n have_v be_v write_v late_o it_o happen_v once_o as_o we_o find_v in_o esdras_n and_o josephus_n author_n not_o less_o believe_v than_o any_o under_o sacred_a to_o be_v a_o great_a and_o solemn_a debate_n in_o the_o court_n of_o darius_n what_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v count_v strong_a of_o all_o other_o he_o that_o can_v resolve_v this_o in_o reward_n of_o his_o excel_a wisdom_n shall_v be_v clad_v in_o purple_a drink_v in_o gold_n sleep_n on_o a_o bed_n of_o gold_n and_o sit_v next_o darius_n none_o but_o they_o doubtless_o who_o be_v repute_v wise_a have_v the_o question_n propound_v to_o they_o who_o after_o some_o respite_n give_v they_o by_o the_o king_n to_o consider_v in_o full_a assembly_n of_o all_o his_o lord_n and_o grave_a counsellor_n return_v several_o what_o they_o think_v the_o first_o hold_v that_o wine_n be_v strong_a another_o that_o the_o king_n be_v strong_a but_o zorobabel_n prince_n of_o the_o captive_a jew_n and_o heir_n to_o the_o crown_n of_o judah_n be_v one_o of_o they_o prove_v woman_n to_o be_v strong_a than_o the_o king_n for_o that_o he_o himself_o have_v see_v a_o concubine_n take_v his_o crown_n from_o off_o his_o head_n to_o set_v it_o upon_o her_o own_o and_o other_o beside_o he_o have_v late_o see_v the_o like_a feat_n do_v and_o not_o in_o jest_n yet_o he_o prove_v on_o and_o it_o be_v so_o yield_v by_o the_o king_n himself_o &_o all_o his_o sage_n that_o neither_o wine_n nor_o woman_n nor_o the_o king_n but_o truth_n of_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v the_o strong_a for_o i_o though_o neither_o ask_v nor_o in_o a_o nation_n that_o give_v such_o reward_n to_o wisdom_n i_o shall_v pronounce_v my_o sentence_n somewhat_o different_a from_o zorobabel_n and_o shall_v defend_v that_o either_o truth_n and_o justice_n be_v all_o one_o for_o truth_n be_v but_o justice_n in_o our_o knowledge_n and_o justice_n be_v but_o truth_n in_o our_o practice_n and_o he_o indeed_o so_o explain_v himself_o in_o say_v that_o with_o truth_n be_v no_o accept_n of_o person_n which_o be_v the_o property_n of_o justice_n or_o else_o if_o there_o be_v any_o odds_o that_o justice_n though_o not_o strong_a than_o truth_n yet_o by_o her_o office_n be_v to_o put_v forth_o and_o exhibit_v more_o strength_n in_o the_o affair_n of_o mankind_n for_o truth_n be_v proper_o no_o more_o than_o contemplation_n and_o her_o utmost_a efficiency_n be_v but_o teach_v but_o justice_n in_o her_o very_a essence_n be_v all_o strength_n and_o activity_n and_o have_v a_o sword_n put_v into_o her_o hand_n to_o use_v against_o all_o violence_n and_o oppression_n on_o the_o earth_n she_o it_o be_v most_o true_o who_o accept_v no_o person_n and_o exempt_v none_o from_o the_o severity_n of_o her_o stroke_n she_o never_o suffer_v injury_n to_o prevail_v but_o when_o fashood_n first_o prevail_v over_o truth_n and_o that_o also_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o justice_n do_v on_o they_o who_o be_v so_o delude_v though_o wicked_a king_n and_o tyrant_n counterfeit_v her_o sword_n as_o some_o do_v that_o buckler_n fable_v to_o fall_v from_o heaven_n into_o the_o capitol_n yet_o she_o communicate_v her_o power_n to_o none_o but_o such_o as_o like_v herself_o be_v just_a or_o at_o least_o will_v do_v justice_n for_o it_o be_v extreme_a partiality_n and_o injustice_n the_o flat_a denial_n and_o overthrow_n of_o herself_o to_o put_v she_o own_o authentic_a sword_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o unjust_a and_o wicked_a man_n or_o so_o far_o to_o accept_v and_o exalt_v one_o mortal_a person_n above_o his_o equal_n that_o he_o alone_o shall_v have_v the_o punish_n of_o all_o other_o man_n transgress_v and_o not_o receive_v like_o punishment_n from_o man_n when_o he_o himself_o shall_v be_v find_v the_o high_a transgressor_n we_o may_v conclude_v therefore_o that_o justice_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o strong_a she_o be_v the_o strength_n the_o kingdom_n the_o power_n and_o majesty_n of_o all_o age_n truth_n herself_o will_v subscribe_v to_o this_o though_o darius_n and_o all_o the_o monarch_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v deny_v and_o if_o by_o sentence_n thus_o write_v it_o be_v my_o happiness_n to_o set_v free_a the_o mind_n of_o english_a man_n from_o longing_n to_o return_v poor_o under_o that_o captivity_n of_o king_n from_o which_o the_o strength_n and_o supreme_a sword_n of_o justice_n have_v deliver_v they_o i_o shall_v have_v do_v a_o work_n not_o much_o inferior_a to_o that_o of_o zorobabel_n who_o by_o well_o praise_v and_o extol_v the_o force_n of_o truth_n in_o that_o contemplative_a strength_n conquer_v darius_n and_o free_v his_o country_n and_o the_o people_n of_o god_n from_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n which_o i_o shall_v yet_o not_o despair_v to_o do_v if_o they_o in_o this_o land_n who_o mind_n be_v yet_o captive_a be_v but_o as_o ingenuous_a to_o acknowledge_v the_o strength_n and_o supremacy_n of_o justice_n as_o that_o heathen_a king_n be_v to_o confess_v the_o strength_n of_o truth_n or_o let_v they_o but_o as_o he_o do_v grant_v that_o and_o they_o will_v soon_o perceive_v that_o truth_n resign_v all_o her_o outward_a strength_n to_o justice_n justice_n therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v strong_a both_o in_o she_o own_o and_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o truth_n but_o if_o a_o king_n may_v do_v among_o man_n whatsoever_o be_v his_o will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o notwithstanding_o be_v unaccountable_a to_o man_n then_o contrary_a to_o this_o magnify_v wisdom_n of_o zorobabel_n neither_o truth_n nor_o justice_n but_o the_o king_n be_v strong_a of_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o that_o persian_a monarch_n himself_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o pride_n and_o glory_n dare_v not_o assume_v let_v we_o see_v therefore_o what_o this_o king_n have_v to_o affirm_v why_o the_o sentence_n of_o justice_n and_o the_o weight_n of_o that_o sword_n which_o she_o deliver_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v more_o partial_a to_o he_o offend_v then_o to_o all_o other_o of_o human_a race_n first_o he_o plead_v that_o no_o law_n of_o god_n or_o man_n give_v to_o subject_n any_o power_n of_o judicature_n without_o or_o against_o he_o which_o assertion_n shall_v be_v prove_v in_o every_o part_n to_o be_v most_o untrue_a the_o first_o express_v law_n of_o god_n give_v to_o mankind_n be_v that_o to_o noah_n as_o a_o law_n in_o general_a to_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o by_o that_o most_o ancient_a and_o universal_a law_n whosoever_o shed_v man_n blood_n by_o man_n shall_v his_o blood_n be_v shed_v we_o find_v here_o no_o exception_n if_o a_o king_n therefore_o do_v this_o to_o a_o king_n and_o that_o by_o man_n also_o the_o same_o shall_v be_v do_v this_o in_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n which_o come_v next_o several_a time_n be_v repeat_v and_o in_o one_o place_n remarkable_o numb_a 35._o you_o shall_v take_v no_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o life_n of_o a_o murderer_n but_o he_o shall_v sure_o be_v put_v to_o death_n the_o land_n can_v be_v cleanse_v of_o the_o blood_n that_o be_v shed_v therein_o but_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o he_o that_o shed_v it_o this_o be_v so_o speak_v as_o that_o which_o concern_v all_o israel_n not_o one_o man_n alone_o to_o see_v perform_v and_o if_o no_o satisfaction_n be_v to_o be_v take_v then_o certain_o no_o exception_n nay_o the_o king_n when_o they_o shall_v set_v up_o any_o be_v to_o observe_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o not_o only_o to_o see_v it_o do_v but_o to_o do_v it_o that_o his_o heart_n may_v not_o be_v lift_v up_o above_o his_o brethren_n to_o dream_v of_o vain_a and_o reasonless_a prerogative_n or_o exemption_n whereby_o the_o law_n itself_o must_v needs_o be_v found_v in_o unrighteousness_n and_o be_v that_o true_a which_o be_v most_o false_a that_o all_o king_n be_v the_o lord_n anoint_v it_o be_v yet_o absurd_a to_o think_v that_o the_o anointment_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o charm_n against_o law_n and_o give_v they_o privilege_v who_o punish_v other_o to_o sin_v themselves_o unpunishable_o the_o high_a priest_n be_v the_o lord_n anoint_v as_o well_o as_o any_o king_n and_o with_o the_o same_o consecrate_a oil_n yet_o solomon_n have_v put_v to_o death_n abiathar_n have_v it_o not_o be_v for_o other_o respect_n then_o that_o anointment_n if_o god_n himself_o say_v to_o king_n touch_v not_o my_o anoint_a mean_v his_o chosen_a people_n as_o be_v evident_a in_o that_o psalm_n yet_o no_o man_n will_v argue_v thence_o that_o he_o protect_v they_o from_o civil_a law_n if_o they_o offend_v then_o certain_o though_o david_n as_o a_o private_a man_n and_o in_o his_o own_o cause_n fear_v to_o lift_v his_o hand_n against_o the_o lord_n anoint_v much_o less_o can_v this_o
and_o know_v not_o that_o the_o deep_a policy_n of_o a_o tyrant_n have_v be_v ever_o to_o counterfeit_v religious_a and_o aristotle_n in_o his_o politics_n have_v mention_v that_o special_a craft_n among_o twelve_o other_o tyrannical_a sophism_n neither_o want_v we_o example_n andronicus_n comnenus_n the_o byzantine_n emperor_n though_o a_o most_o cruel_a tyrant_n be_v report_v by_o nicetas_n to_o have_v be_v a_o constant_a reader_n of_o saint_n paul_n epistle_n and_o by_o continual_a study_n have_v so_o incorporate_v the_o phrase_n &_o stile_n of_o that_o transcendent_a apostle_n into_o all_o his_o familiar_a letter_n that_o the_o imitation_n seem_v to_o vie_v with_o the_o original_a yet_o this_o availd_v not_o to_o deceive_v the_o people_n of_o that_o empire_n who_o not_o withstand_v his_o saint_n vizard_n tear_v he_o to_o piece_n for_o his_o tyranny_n from_o story_n of_o this_o nature_n both_o ancient_a and_o modern_a which_o abound_v the_o poet_n also_o and_o some_o english_a have_v be_v in_o this_o point_n so_o mindful_a of_o decorum_n as_o to_o put_v never_o more_o pious_a word_n in_o the_o mouth_n of_o any_o person_n then_o of_o a_o tyrant_n i_o shall_v not_o instance_n a_o abstruse_a author_n wherein_o the_o king_n may_v be_v less_o conversant_a but_o one_o who_o we_o well_o know_v be_v the_o closet_n companion_n of_o these_o his_o solitude_n william_n shakespeare_n who_o introduce_v the_o person_n of_o richard_n the_o three_o speak_v in_o as_o high_a a_o strain_n of_o piety_n and_o mortification_n as_o be_v utter_v in_o any_o passage_n of_o this_o to_o night_n i_o thank_v my_o god_n for_o my_o humility_n other_o stuff_n of_o this_o sort_n may_v be_v read_v throughout_o the_o whole_a tragedy_n wherein_o the_o poet_n use_v not_o much_o licence_n in_o depart_v from_o the_o truth_n of_o history_n which_o deliver_v he_o a_o deep_a dissembler_n not_o of_o his_o affection_n only_o but_o of_o religion_n in_o pray_v therefore_o and_o in_o the_o outward_a work_n of_o devotion_n this_o king_n we_o see_v have_v not_o at_o all_o exceed_v the_o worst_a of_o king_n before_o he_o but_o herein_o the_o worst_a of_o king_n profess_v christianism_n have_v by_o far_o exceed_v he_o they_o for_o aught_o we_o know_v have_v still_o pray_v their_o own_o or_o at_o least_o borrow_a from_o fit_a author_n but_o this_o king_n not_o content_a with_o that_o
