great_a gift_n and_o science_n the_o apostle_n not_o want_v these_o thing_n protest_v unto_o they_o that_o he_o never_o make_v this_o humane_a knowledge_n the_o full_a scope_n drift_n and_o emulation_n and_o the_o ambitious_a man_n in_o his_o honour_n why_o do_v man_n learn_v but_o to_o get_v preferment_n why_o do_v man_n so_o labour_n but_o to_o attain_v to_o profit_v why_o do_v man_n take_v such_o pain_n but_o in_o the_o end_n to_o reap_v pleasure_n so_o far_o be_v we_o off_o from_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n crucify_v that_o man_n now_o rejoice_v in_o open_a sin_n and_o that_o so_o manifest_o as_o covetousness_n &_o ambition_n creep_v under_o the_o cloak_n of_o virtue_n plead_v for_o ability_n and_o maintenance_n for_o place_n and_o countenance_n without_o which_o as_o they_o say_v a_o man_n can_v do_v good_a but_o these_o man_n that_o thus_o labour_v more_o for_o promotion_n profit_n and_o pleasure_n than_o to_o find_v christ_n crucify_v and_o can_v find_v the_o uncomparable_a joy_n if_o they_o be_v new_a creature_n may_v happy_o carry_v the_o face_n of_o christian_n but_o sure_o by_o outward_a call_n as_o yet_o they_o belong_v not_o unto_o christ._n and_o what_o be_v these_o outward_a thing_n to_o be_v rejoice_v in_o admit_v that_o a_o man_n have_v all_o learning_n authority_n riches_n and_o credit_n be_v they_o not_o common_a as_o well_o to_o the_o wicked_a as_o to_o the_o godly_a be_v they_o not_o so_o transitory_a and_o insufficient_a that_o the_o more_o a_o man_n have_v of_o they_o the_o more_o he_o may_v have_v do_v they_o make_v the_o possessor_n the_o better_a can_v they_o keep_v evil_a from_o he_o can_v they_o minister_v comfort_n to_o the_o afflict_a conscience_n can_v they_o make_v we_o rejoice_v in_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n or_o can_v they_o save_v we_o from_o confusion_n before_o god_n his_o judgement_n seat_n sure_o this_o be_v not_o in_o wit_n eloquence_n learning_n friend_n glory_n riches_n and_o authority_n all_o which_o the_o wicked_a know_v better_a to_o abuse_v than_o the_o godly_a to_o use_v but_o in_o christ_n which_o be_v accurse_v and_o in_o his_o cross_n which_o be_v a_o blessing_n unto_o us._n see_v it_o be_v so_o well_o do_v the_o apostle_n to_o rejoice_v in_o this_o above_o all_o for_o be_v a_o man_n never_o so_o good_a so_o glorious_a so_o learned_a so_o well_o bring_v up_o of_o such_o suffer_v for_o the_o profession_n of_o christ_n because_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o another_o place_n how_o he_o do_v bear_v about_o with_o he_o the_o mark_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o his_o body_n but_o this_o sense_n be_v too_o hard_o to_o be_v brook_v that_o we_o shall_v rejoice_v in_o nothing_o but_o in_o affliction_n albeit_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o those_o affliction_n which_o we_o suffer_v for_o christ_n his_o sake_n again_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n take_v for_o affliction_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o principal_a cause_n of_o the_o world_n crucify_v to_o we_o or_o of_o crucify_a we_o to_o the_o world_n although_o in_o some_o respect_n it_o may_v be_v count_v a_o inferior_a cause_n further_o if_o we_o compare_v this_o place_n with_o other_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o cross_n which_o christ_n suffer_v for_o we_o rather_o than_o of_o the_o cross_n which_o we_o suffer_v for_o he_o as_o 2._o cor_n 2_o 2._o where_o the_o apostle_n labour_v to_o know_v nothing_o as_o here_o he_o rejoice_v in_o nothing_o more_o than_o in_o christ_n crucify_v as_o he_o call_v it_o in_o that_o place_n or_o in_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o speak_v in_o this_o place_n the_o apostle_n his_o meaning_n then_o brief_o be_v this_o be_v it_o far_o from_o i_o that_o i_o shall_v this_o show_v first_o that_o he_o pray_v against_o their_o evil_a cause_n second_o that_o he_o suffer_v unjust_o first_o because_o he_o suffer_v for_o the_o truth_n second_o because_o he_o behave_v himself_o godly_a in_o his_o cause_n not_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n and_o we_o must_v look_v that_o we_o have_v these_o thing_n before_o we_o pray_v this_o prayer_n first_o that_o our_o cause_n be_v good_a second_o that_o it_o be_v right_o handle_v therefore_o heretic_n and_o wicked_a man_n can_v make_v this_o prayer_n david_n be_v long_o in_o this_o trouble_n and_o yet_o he_o provoke_v they_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n then_o if_o we_o will_v stand_v in_o trouble_n let_v we_o labour_n to_o be_v ground_v on_o the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n of_o a_o new_a life_n of_o his_o fatherly_a providence_n and_o let_v this_o purge_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o if_o we_o can_v do_v this_o than_o nothing_o shall_v separate_v we_o from_o god_n as_o paul_n say_v rom._n 8._o and_o again_o he_o say_v there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o they_o have_v his_o spirit_n to_o purge_v they_o from_o sin_n and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n the_o
