a_o sermon_n preach_v before_o the_o queen_n at_o whitehall_n march_v the_o 13_o the_o 1691_o 2._o by_o the_o right_n reverend_a father_n in_o god_n edward_n lord_n bishop_n of_o worcester_z publish_a by_o her_o majesty_n special_a command_n london_n print_v by_o j._n h._n for_o henry_n mortlock_n at_o the_o phoenix_n in_o st._n paul_n churchyard_n 1692._o roman_n viii_o 6._o for_o to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v death_n but_o to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v life_n and_o peace_n in_o these_o word_n be_v imply_v a_o distribution_n of_o mankind_n into_o those_o who_o be_v carnal_o and_o spiritual_o mind_v which_o distinction_n be_v so_o large_a and_o comprehensive_a as_o to_o take_v in_o all_o sort_n and_o condition_n of_o man_n and_o of_o so_o great_a moment_n and_o importance_n that_o their_o life_n or_o death_n happiness_n or_o misery_n depend_v upon_o it_o but_o consider_v the_o mixture_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o mankind_n it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o set_v the_o bound_n of_o the_o carnal_a and_o spiritual_a mind_n and_o consider_v the_o frequent_a impunity_n and_o security_n of_o bad_a man_n and_o the_o fear_n and_o trouble_n which_o the_o best_a be_v not_o exempt_v from_o it_o seem_v next_o to_o impossible_a to_o make_v out_o at_o least_o as_o to_o this_o life_n that_o to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v death_n but_o to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v life_n and_o peace_n yet_o our_o apostle_n do_v not_o seem_v to_o confine_v the_o consequence_n here_o mention_v to_o another_o world_n although_o the_o full_a accomplishment_n of_o they_o be_v only_o there_o to_o be_v expect_v but_o if_o we_o attend_v to_o his_o scope_n and_o design_n in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o forego_n chapter_n and_o the_o beginning_n of_o this_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o even_o in_o this_o life_n the_o result_n of_o a_o carnal_a mind_n be_v a_o sort_n of_o spiritual_a death_n and_o of_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v life_n and_o peace_n for_o when_o s._n paul_n in_o the_o seven_o chapter_n have_v represent_v himself_o as_o carnal_a and_o sell_v under_o sin_n 7.14_o although_o there_o be_v great_a struggle_n between_o the_o conviction_n of_o his_o conscience_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o carnal_a inclination_n yet_o as_o long_o as_o the_o latter_a prevail_v so_o that_o he_o can_v not_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o his_o mind_n and_o reason_n tell_v he_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v 20._o but_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o he_o be_v convince_v he_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v do_v the_o more_o he_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o the_o more_o sad_a and_o miserable_a he_o find_v his_o condition_n to_o be_v as_o appear_v by_o that_o emphatical_a expression_n which_o follow_v upon_o it_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o 7.24_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o this_o death_n but_o he_o no_o soon_o find_v hope_n of_o delivery_n and_o escape_n out_o of_o that_o estate_n but_o he_o break_v forth_o into_o a_o transport_n of_o joy_n and_o inward_a satisfaction_n 25._o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n who_o have_v give_v we_o the_o victory_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n not_o mere_o a_o victory_n over_o death_n but_o over_o sin_n too_o and_o so_o he_o begin_v this_o chapter_n after_o a_o triumphant_a manner_n there_o be_v therefore_o no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n 8.1_o who_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n have_v make_v i_o free_a from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n 2._o he_o that_o groan_v under_o his_o captivity_n before_o to_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n do_v now_o rejoice_v in_o his_o deliverance_n from_o it_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o what_o can_v not_o be_v do_v by_o natural_a freedom_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o force_n of_o reason_n be_v bring_v to_o pass_v by_o the_o assistance_n of_o divine_a grace_n give_v to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n by_o jesus_n christ._n for_o what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v in_o that_o it_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n 3._o what_o be_v that_o which_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v it_o can_v awake_v convince_v terrify_v and_o confound_v the_o conscience_n of_o sinner_n under_o the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o their_o sin_n but_o it_o can_v neither_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n nor_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n it_o can_v not_o remove_v the_o gild_n nor_o take_v away_o the_o force_n and_o power_n of_o sin_n but_o god_n send_v his_o own_o son_n in_o the_o likeness_n of_o sinful_a flesh_n and_o for_o sin_n condemn_v sin_n in_o the_o flesh_n i._n e._n jesus_n christ_n become_v a_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n for_o sin_n take_v off_o the_o damn_v power_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o the_o prevail_a efficacy_n of_o his_o grace_n subdue_v the_o strength_n and_o force_n of_o it_o to_o such_o a_o degree_n that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v fulfil_v in_o we_o 4._o who_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n how_o can_v this_o be_v if_o s._n paul_n still_o consider_v himself_o in_o the_o same_o condition_n he_o do_v in_o the_o forego_n chapter_n for_o if_o he_o be_v still_o in_o captivity_n to_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n in_o his_o member_n how_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v fulfil_v in_o he_o how_o can_v he_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n if_o the_o good_a which_o he_o will_v he_o do_v not_o and_o the_o evil_n which_o he_o will_v not_o that_o he_o do_v for_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o repugnant_a to_o each_o other_o that_o when_o they_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o same_o person_n it_o must_v be_v under_o different_a consideration_n the_o one_o of_o he_o as_o mere_o under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o law_n the_o other_o as_o under_o the_o grace_n and_o influence_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o one_o be_v like_o rough_a and_o a_o churlish_a sort_n of_o physic_n which_o search_v into_o every_o part_n and_o put_v all_o the_o ill_a humour_n of_o the_o body_n into_o motion_n and_o make_v a_o general_a disturbance_n and_o uneasiness_n within_o but_o yet_o let_v they_o remain_v where_o they_o be_v the_o other_o be_v like_o a_o gentle_a but_o more_o effectual_a remedy_n which_o carry_v off_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o inward_a corruption_n and_o alter_v the_o habit_n and_o temper_n and_o put_v quite_o another_o disposition_n into_o we_o which_o produce_v very_o different_a effect_n upon_o we_o for_o instead_o of_o horror_n and_o despair_n and_o inward_a anguish_n and_o confusion_n there_o will_v follow_v a_o new_a life_n of_o joy_n and_o peace_n here_o and_o eternal_a happiness_n hereafter_o and_o this_o be_v what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v etc._n etc._n wherein_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o very_o much_o deserve_v our_o consideration_n i._o the_o different_a temper_n of_o man_n mind_n some_o be_v carnal_o and_o other_o spiritual_o mind_v ii_o the_o different_a consequence_n which_o follow_v they_o to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v death_n but_o to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v life_n and_o peace_n i._o the_o different_a temper_n of_o man_n mind_n the_o different_a denomination_n be_v take_v from_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v here_o represent_v as_o two_o principle_n so_o different_a from_o each_o other_o that_o the_o same_o person_n can_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v act_v by_o both_o of_o they_o for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o the_o forego_n word_n they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o flesh_n do_v mind_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o flesh_n 5._o but_o they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o spirit_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n where_o the_o flesh_n in_o a_o moral_a sense_n take_v in_o all_o our_o sensual_a inclination_n which_o be_v sinful_a either_o in_o their_o nature_n or_o degree_n the_o spirit_n be_v that_o divine_a principle_n which_o possess_v the_o mind_n with_o the_o love_n and_o esteem_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o keep_v our_o natural_a inclination_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o god_n law_n to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v to_o be_v under_o the_o influence_n of_o carnal_a thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o pursuit_n of_o they_o our_o chief_a design_n to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v to_o have_v so_o deep_a and_o just_a a_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o his_o law_n upon_o our_o mind_n as_o to_o make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o please_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o subdue_v all_o such_o inclination_n which_o be_v repugnant_a to_o his_o will._n but_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a difficulty_n how_o to_o judge_v concern_v this_o matter_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o
of_o severity_n ii_o i_o be_o now_o to_o consider_v the_o different_a consequence_n of_o these_o two_o to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v death_n but_o to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v life_n and_o peace_n which_o in_o short_a be_v that_o the_o advantage_n be_v far_o great_a which_o come_v to_o mankind_n by_o one_o than_o by_o the_o other_o and_o that_o will_v appear_v by_o compare_v they_o together_o 1._o as_o under_o equal_a circumstance_n 2._o as_o under_o unequal_a circumstance_n 1._o as_o under_o equal_a circumstance_n and_o here_o we_o have_v two_o sort_n of_o person_n to_o consider_v 1._o those_o who_o have_v conviction_n of_o conscience_n go_v along_o with_o a_o carnal_a mind_n such_o who_o look_v on_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n in_o this_o world_n at_o a_o distance_n and_o judge_v only_o by_o appearance_n will_v be_v apt_a to_o think_v that_o those_o who_o do_v allow_v themselves_o all_o the_o liberty_n which_o a_o carnal_a mind_n do_v incline_v they_o to_o have_v very_o much_o the_o advantage_n of_o those_o who_o be_v under_o the_o restraint_n of_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n for_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o severe_a rule_n of_o virtue_n and_o mortification_n to_o deny_v all_o ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n and_o to_o live_v sober_o and_o righteous_o and_o godly_a in_o this_o present_a world_n and_o these_o be_v think_v to_o be_v very_o hard_a thing_n whereas_o such_o who_o be_v not_o under_o these_o difficulty_n seem_v to_o lead_v the_o most_o pleasant_a and_o easy_a life_n enjoy_v themselves_o and_o be_v full_a of_o noise_n and_o confidence_n and_o appear_v to_o be_v all_o mirth_n and_o good_a humour_n but_o there_o be_v another_o account_n to_o be_v take_v of_o these_o thing_n if_o man_n can_v look_v within_o and_o see_v all_o the_o secret_a misgiving_n the_o inward_a horror_n of_o conscience_n the_o impatience_n and_o dissatisfaction_n they_o have_v when_o they_o serious_o reflect_v on_o their_o evil_a course_n it_o will_v quite_o alter_v their_o apprehension_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o make_v they_o conclude_v with_o the_o roman_a orator_n 2._o that_o one_o day_n spend_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o virtue_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v before_o everlasting_a debauchery_n and_o he_o be_v no_o fool_n no_o pedant_n no_o mean_a and_o contemptible_a person_n who_o say_v this_o but_o a_o man_n of_o wit_n and_o sense_n of_o quality_n and_o experience_n who_o have_v opportunity_n and_o mean_n enough_o to_o have_v pursue_v the_o most_o sensual_a and_o voluptuous_a course_n of_o life_n which_o yet_o we_o see_v out_o of_o judgement_n and_o choice_n he_o despise_v and_o prefer_v a_o far_o short_a life_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o virtue_n before_o a_o vicious_a immortality_n and_o yet_o how_o short_a be_v the_o encouragement_n to_o a_o good_a life_n and_o the_o dissuasives_n from_o sin_n among_o the_o best_a of_o they_o in_o comparison_n of_o what_o we_o all_o know_v now_o by_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n they_o go_v no_o far_a than_o mere_a natural_a reason_n and_o the_o common_a sense_n of_o mankind_n carry_v they_o but_o we_o profess_v to_o believe_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n reveal_v from_o heaven_n against_o all_o unrighteousness_n and_o ungodliness_n of_o man_n 1.18_o 6._o 16._o and_o that_o there_o will_v be_v a_o great_a and_o terrible_a day_n 14.10_o wherein_o man_n must_v receive_v according_a to_o their_o work_n 15._o whether_o they_o be_v good_a or_o evil._n 11._o and_o will_v not_o this_o dreadful_a consideration_n awaken_v the_o drowsy_a and_o secure_a sinner_n and_o make_v he_o look_v about_o he_o betimes_o while_o there_o be_v yet_o any_o hope_n of_o mercy_n will_v he_o not_o become_v so_o wise_a at_o least_o as_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o consideration_n of_o his_o way_n and_o to_o look_v back_o on_o the_o former_a course_n of_o his_o life_n to_o examine_v and_o compare_v that_o with_o the_o law_n of_o god_n by_o which_o he_o must_v be_v judge_v and_o if_o we_o have_v but_o patience_n to_o do_v this_o he_o will_v have_v no_o far_o patience_n with_o himself_o for_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o unspeakable_a folly_n he_o will_v abhor_v himself_o for_o all_o his_o sensual_a and_o sinful_a delight_n which_o will_v turn_v into_o the_o great_a bitterness_n and_o anguish_n to_o his_o soul_n he_o will_v lament_v his_o folly_n and_o wickedness_n with_o the_o deep_a sorrow_n and_o take_v up_o sincere_a and_o firm_a resolution_n to_o return_v no_o more_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o and_o if_o this_o be_v the_o result_n as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v of_o all_o the_o distinguish_a sinful_a pleasure_n of_o a_o carnal_a mind_n i_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o most_o impartial_a mind_n to_o resolve_v whether_o there_o will_v be_v the_o least_o advantage_n by_o pursue_v they_o 2._o but_o we_o have_v too_o great_a reason_n to_o suppose_v that_o man_n may_v harden_v themselves_o to_o such_o a_o degree_n of_o wickedness_n as_o to_o be_v insensible_a of_o the_o folly_n of_o it_o and_o to_o mock_v at_o those_o who_o go_v about_o to_o reprove_v they_o for_o it_o such_o as_o these_o be_v at_o ease_n because_o they_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o their_o condition_n but_o so_o be_v those_o in_o a_o lethargy_n be_v their_o case_n therefore_o to_o be_v envy_v or_o compare_v with_o those_o in_o health_n although_o more_o sensible_a of_o pain_n and_o danger_n who_o seem_v to_o be_v better_o please_v at_o sometime_o and_o transport_v with_o their_o own_o imagination_n than_o man_n in_o a_o frenzy_n and_o yet_o no_o man_n think_v their_o condition_n happy_a for_o it_o there_o be_v a_o sort_n of_o moral_a frenzy_n which_o possess_v some_o part_n of_o mankind_n who_o be_v not_o only_o extravagant_a in_o their_o action_n but_o assume_v such_o a_o degree_n of_o confidence_n in_o commit_v they_o as_o though_o the_o wise_a man_n of_o all_o age_n have_v be_v the_o only_a remarkable_a fool_n in_o it_o but_o it_o be_v no_o such_o easy_a matter_n to_o run_v down_o the_o principle_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n they_o have_v stand_v the_o shock_n of_o all_o the_o sarcasm_n and_o reproach_n of_o former_a time_n and_o there_o be_v still_o nothing_o at_o the_o bottom_n of_o all_o the_o scorn_n and_o contempt_n that_o be_v cast_v upon_o they_o but_o a_o carnal_a and_o profane_a temper_n of_o mind_n which_o may_v bear_v they_o up_o for_o a_o while_n but_o it_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o end_n in_o everlasting_a confusion_n and_o then_o they_o will_v find_v what_o they_o be_v so_o unwilling_a to_o believe_v that_o to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v death_n not_o a_o mere_a state_n of_o insensibility_n but_o the_o worst_a kind_n of_o death_n a_o death_n of_o perpetual_a horror_n and_o torment_n a_o death_n without_o the_o power_n of_o die_v and_o yet_o with_o a_o perpetual_a desire_n of_o it_o a_o death_n who_o sting_n can_v never_o be_v take_v out_o and_o who_o terror_n be_v say_v to_o be_v as_o everlasting_a as_o the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n and_o shall_v not_o the_o apprehension_n of_o such_o a_o death_n as_o this_o so_o dreadful_a so_o unavoidable_a so_o insupportable_a make_v the_o great_a sinner_n to_o tremble_v and_o be_v confound_v at_o the_o apprehension_n of_o it_o and_o if_o once_o such_o thought_n break_v into_o their_o mind_n farewell_o then_o to_o all_o the_o imaginary_a pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o a_o carnal_a mind_n for_o it_o must_v sink_v it_o into_o the_o confusion_n if_o not_o the_o despair_n of_o hell_n 2._o but_o i_o have_v hitherto_o represent_v the_o disadvantage_n of_o one_o side_n but_o be_v there_o not_o such_o on_o the_o other_o too_o some_o be_v too_o apt_a to_o think_v a_o spiritual_a mind_n to_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o disorder_a fancy_n and_o melancholy_a imagination_n of_o invisible_a thing_n if_o this_o be_v all_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v life_n and_o peace_n that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o real_a satisfaction_n about_o it_o but_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v true_o the_o most_o desirable_a thing_n we_o be_v capable_a of_o in_o this_o world_n for_o it_o be_v the_o best_a improvement_n of_o our_o mind_n which_o be_v spiritual_a it_o be_v the_o purge_n and_o refine_n they_o from_o the_o dross_n and_o corruption_n which_o debase_v they_o it_o be_v the_o advance_v they_o towards_o the_o divine_a nature_n by_o a_o gradual_a participation_n of_o it_o it_o be_v the_o raise_v they_o above_o the_o carnal_a delight_n and_o the_o solicitous_a care_n and_o perplex_v fear_n of_o this_o world_n and_o fit_v they_o for_o a_o perpetual_a conversation_n with_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a object_n and_o what_o then_o can_v be_v more_o agreeable_a to_o the_o best_a part_n of_o ourselves_o here_o than_o to_o have_v a_o mind_n so_o disengage_v from_o this_o world_n and_o so_o fit_a for_o a_o better_a so_o that_o we_o may_v be_v content_a to_o take_v a_o view_n
