of_o further_a deliverance_n from_o the_o like_a danger_n that_o may_v happen_v unto_o they_o and_o therein_o express_v his_o hope_n and_o most_o holy_a faith_n who_o deliver_v we_o from_o so_o state_n of_o death_n not_o only_o as_o expose_v to_o wrath_n and_o future_a condemnation_n but_o likewise_o as_o disable_n to_o the_o action_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n alienate_v we_o and_o deprive_v we_o of_o that_o life_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v be_v in_o we_o ephes_n 4.18_o for_o as_o there_o be_v a_o life_n of_o grace_n distinguish_v from_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n so_o there_o be_v likewise_o a_o death_n of_o sin_n distinguish_v from_o the_o death_n of_o condemnation_n and_o this_o death_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v such_o as_o be_v to_o be_v number_v among_o great_a death_n and_o the_o deliverance_n from_o it_o reckon_v among_o great_a deliverance_n indeed_o it_o be_v not_o always_o count_v so_o at_o least_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o the_o world_n they_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v ready_a to_o make_v nothing_o of_o it_o a_o light_n and_o small_a matter_n as_o for_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n do_v all_o they_o can_v to_o shun_v that_o but_o as_o for_o this_o body_n of_o death_n which_o the_o apostle_n paul_n so_o much_o complain_v of_o and_o bless_a god_n for_o deliverance_n from_o it_o this_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v little_o trouble_v or_o solicitous_a about_o well_o but_o every_o good_a christian_a who_o have_v the_o eye_n of_o his_o understanding_n enlighten_v and_o his_o heart_n true_o sanctify_v with_o grace_n he_o look_v upon_o this_o as_o a_o very_a grievous_a and_o fearful_a death_n and_o according_o bless_v god_n for_o his_o deliverance_n and_o redempton_n from_o it_o oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n i_o thank_v god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n rom._n 7.24_o 25._o second_o eternal_a death_n the_o death_n of_o wrath_n and_o condemnation_n that_o be_v another_o great_a death_n also_o and_o such_o as_o follow_v likewise_o upon_o the_o former_a without_o recovery_n from_o it_o he_o that_o be_v final_o dead_a in_o sin_n he_o the_o former_a yet_o it_o be_v great_a consider_v simple_o in_o itself_o and_o so_o much_o the_o great_a according_a to_o the_o several_a circumstance_n and_o aggravation_n which_o it_o may_v be_v clothe_v withal_o which_o we_o may_v take_v in_o these_o follow_a particular_n first_o from_o the_o nature_n and_o kind_n of_o it_o a_o violent_a death_n not_o a_o natural_a this_o be_v a_o great_a death_n and_o so_o consequent_o a_o great_a mercy_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o accident_n and_o casualty_n and_o mischance_n which_o we_o be_v subject_a unto_o when_o the_o candle_n be_v not_o put_v out_o but_o go_v out_o when_o our_o life_n be_v not_o take_v away_o from_o we_o but_o end_n of_o itself_o this_o be_v a_o temporal_a blessing_n and_o such_o as_o when_o it_o be_v grant_v to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v grant_v in_o love_n and_o answerable_o to_o be_v look_v upon_o by_o they_o as_o a_o merciful_a dispensation_n which_o they_o be_v to_o be_v thankful_a for_o as_o for_o wicked_a man_n it_o be_v threaten_v as_o a_o judgement_n upon_o they_o joh_n 27.20_o that_o a_o tempest_n shall_v steal_v they_o away_o and_o a_o storm_n shall_v hurl_v as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o epistle_n but_o they_o partly_o through_o their_o own_o negligence_n and_o non-attendency_a partly_o through_o satan_n malice_n and_o the_o seducement_n of_o false-teacher_n among_o they_o be_v much_o apostatise_v and_o depart_v from_o the_o truth_n in_o intermingle_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n with_o the_o law_n and_o ceremony_n of_o first_o viz._n the_o compellation_n my_o little_a child_n now_o this_o it_o have_v a_o double_a notion_n or_o emphasis_n which_o may_v be_v fasten_v upon_o it_o first_o a_o emphasis_n of_o affection_n and_o second_o a_o emphasis_n of_o diminution_n there_o be_v love_n and_o disparagement_n both_o in_o this_o manner_n of_o expression_n first_o there_o be_v affection_n in_o it_o even_o the_o affection_n of_o a_o father_n to_o his_o child_n or_o a_o mother_n to_o the_o fruit_n of_o her_o womb_n which_o be_v also_o in_o a_o good_a minister_n towards_o his_o people_n he_o tender_v they_o even_o as_o his_o own_o bowel_n thus_o do_v paul_n these_o present_a galatian_n therefore_o as_o before_o in_o ver_fw-la 12._o he_o call_v they_o brethren_n so_o here_o now_o in_o this_o 19_o verse_n religion_n who_o be_v now_o but_o of_o a_o low_a stature_n and_o degree_n in_o christianity_n thus_o the_o word_n sometime_o be_v take_v also_o in_o scripture_n as_o 1_o cor._n 3.1_o and_o i_o brethren_n can_v not_o speak_v unto_o you_o as_o unto_o spiritual_a but_o as_o unto_o carnal_a even_o as_o unto_o babe_n in_o christ_n so_o heb._n 5.12_o for_o every_o one_o that_o use_v milk_n be_v least_o thing_n that_o be_v it_o trouble_v we_o and_o fill_v we_o with_o disquietness_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n here_o observable_a from_o these_o word_n viz._n a_o christian_n disposition_n he_o be_v apt_a and_o subject_a to_o be_v trouble_v as_o appear_v from_o this_o caution_n or_o prohibition_n of_o christ_n to_o his_o disciple_n the_o second_o be_v his_o duty_n and_o that_o be_v not_o to_o be_v trouble_v or_o afraid_a christian_n they_o shall_v by_o all_o mean_n shun_v and_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o trouble_n in_o themselves_o let_v not_o your_o heart_n be_v a_o very_a sad_a condition_n as_o pagan_n infidel_n and_o jew_n and_o such_o as_o these_o to_o who_o either_o this_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o yetnot_v come_v and_o so_o have_v not_o attain_v of_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n and_o which_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n do_v extend_v unto_o the_o one_o be_v positive_a to_o the_o punishment_n of_o sense_n and_o the_o endure_a of_o exquisite_a torment_n and_o so_o in_o that_o consideration_n it_o be_v call_v darkness_n the_o other_o be_v privative_a in_o the_o punishment_n of_o loss_n and_o expulsion_n from_o god_n glorious_a presence_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o countenance_n and_o so_o in_o that_o consideration_n it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v no_o light_n and_o thus_o we_o have_v see_v this_o passage_n in_o each_o expression_n of_o it_o both_o affirmative_a and_o negative_a darkness_n and_o not_o light_a and_o so_o much_o may_v be_v also_o speak_v of_o it_o as_o consider_v simple_o and_o absolute_o in_o its_o general_a proposition_n we_o may_v further_o second_o look_v upon_o it_o relative_o and_o in_o its_o particular_a scope_n as_o direct_v more_o especial_o to_o the_o person_n above_o mention_v who_o desire_v this_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o these_o the_o prophet_n amos_n here_o declare_v that_o this_o day_n it_o be_v darkness_n and_o not_o light_a and_o here_o again_o in_o this_o reference_n it_o carry_v a_o threefold_a force_n or_o emphasis_n with_o it_o first_o a_o emphasis_n of_o information_n to_o those_o which_o be_v ignorant_a and_o do_v not_o know_v that_o this_o day_n be_v second_o a_o emphasis_n of_o conviction_n to_o those_o which_o be_v obstinate_a and_o will_v not_o know_v what_o this_o day_n be_v three_o a_o emphasis_n of_o astonishment_n to_o those_o which_o be_v desperate_a which_o know_v it_o but_o lay_v aside_o the_o thought_n and_o consideration_n of_o it_o and_o will_v put_v it_o to_o the_o venture_n first_o i_o say_v this_o expression_n the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v darkness_n and_o not_o light_a it_o have_v a_o emphasis_n of_o information_n to_o those_o who_o be_v ignorant_a and_o which_o do_v not_o know_v it_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v thus_o unto_o they_o you_o seem_v to_o desire_v the_o come_n of_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o if_o thereby_o you_o shall_v get_v some_o great_a good_a to_o yourselves_o but_o alas_o as_o the_o case_n stand_v with_o you_o you_o have_v no_o cause_n at_o all_o to_o do_v so_o for_o there_o will_v be_v no_o advantage_n from_o it_o to_o you_o the_o proper_a object_n of_o desire_n it_o be_v good_a and_o not_o evil_a it_o be_v light_n and_o not_o darkness_n but_o this_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o it_o be_v circumstance_v it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v quite_o contrary_a it_o be_v evil_a and_o not_o good_a it_o be_v darkness_n and_o not_o light_n that_o you_o may_v right_o understand_v it_o the_o world_n have_v other_o notion_n common_o of_o death_n and_o judgement_n than_o those_o which_o they_o shall_v have_v but_o the_o scripture_n and_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o best_a instructor_n of_o they_o in_o this_o particular_a and_o that_o give_v they_o a_o true_a account_n and_o estimate_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v if_o they_o will_v hearken_v unto_o it_o second_o a_o emphasis_n of_o conviction_n to_o those_o which_o be_v obstinate_a and_o will_v not_o know_v it_o profane_a person_n as_o i_o show_v before_o they_o laugh_v at_o those_o thing_n think_v there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n indeed_o as_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o scoff_o and_o in_o scorn_n call_v for_o it_o well_o let_v it_o come_v we_o will_v fain_o see_v this_o day_n that_o you_o speak_v of_o and_o threaten_v we_o withal_o well_o say_v the_o prophet_n to_o these_o you_o have_v no_o great_a cause_n to_o be_v so_o full_a of_o this_o confidence_n and_o security_n if_o you_o consider_v all_o for_o i_o can_v tell_v you_o there_o be_v somewhat_o more_o in_o this_o day_n than_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o there_o be_v no_o play_v or_o jest_v with_o it_o this_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v darkness_n and_o not_o light_a what_o ever_o you_o may_v think_v of_o it_o it_o be_v so_o and_o so_o you_o will_v find_v it_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v powerful_a sharp_a than_o a_o two-edged_a sword_n and_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o word_n have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n go_v along_o with_o they_o and_o set_v they_o home_o upon_o the_o conscience_n have_v a_o ability_n in_o they_o to_o conquer_v and_o confound_v the_o most_o impartial_a mocker_n three_o a_o emphasis_n of_o astonishment_n to_o those_o which_o be_v desperate_a and_o though_o they_o know_v and_o in_o some_o sort_n believe_v such_o a_o day_n as_o this_o be_v yet_o do_v not_o fear_v it_o but_o be_v harden_v in_o their_o heart_n against_o it_o to_o such_o as_o these_o the_o prophet_n here_o declare_v the_o horridness_n and_o unsupportableness_n of_o it_o that_o though_o they_o may_v think_v they_o can_v grapple_v with_o it_o and_o hold_v out_o against_o the_o extremity_n of_o it_o yet_o in_o conclusion_n and_o when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n they_o will_v find_v it_o to_o be_v too_o heavy_a for_o they_o and_o above_o their_o strength_n whether_o the_o day_n of_o common_a and_o public_a calamity_n or_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n and_o general_a judgement_n who_o may_v abide_v the_o day_n of_o his_o come_n or_o who_o shall_v stand_v when_o he_o shall_v appear_v as_o it_o be_v mal._n 3.2_o and_o again_o rev._n 6.16_o 17._o they_o shall_v call_v to_o the_o mountain_n to_o full_a of_o horror_n in_o the_o whole_a latitude_n and_o extent_n of_o it_o whether_o we_o take_v it_o for_o the_o day_n of_o death_n and_o general_a judgement_n or_o whether_o we_o take_v it_o for_o the_o day_n of_o captivity_n and_o national_a visitation_n now_o what_o remain_v but_o that_o according_o we_o shall_v be_v sensible_a and_o apprehensive_a of_o it_o in_o this_o representation_n and_o from_o thence_o to_o prevent_v the_o terribleness_n of_o it_o to_o ourselves_o for_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v that_o the_o terribleness_n of_o they_o increase_v with_o the_o security_n about_o they_o and_o the_o less_o grievous_a they_o be_v think_v to_o be_v aforehand_o the_o more_o heavy_a be_v they_o when_o they_o happen_v and_o come_v to_o pass_v and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n preparation_n for_o they_o do_v take_v off_o from_o the_o dreadfulness_n of_o they_o we_o shall_v therefore_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o stock_n of_o grace_n against_o such_o and_o sinful_a course_n and_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a grace_n we_o shall_v walk_v honest_o as_o in_o the_o day_n not_o in_o riot_v and_o drunkenness_n not_o in_o chamber_v and_o wantonness_n not_o in_o strife_n and_o envy_v but_o put_v on_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o make_v no_o provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o
