a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. from Cesar Augustus that all the world should be ‖ Or â—â—elled taxed 2 And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governour of Syria 3 And all went to be taxed every one into his own city 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea unto * Joh. 7.42 the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and linage of David 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with childe 6 And so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered 7 And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped him in swadling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn 8 And there were in the same countrey shepherds abiding in the field keeping ‖ Or the night-watches watch over their flock by night 9 And lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid 10 And the angel said unto them Fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a signe unto you Ye shall finde the babe wrapped in swadling clothes lying in a manger 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying 14 Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace good will towards men 15 And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven the shepherds said one to another Let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord hath made known unto us 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger 17 And when they had seen it they made known abroad should not see death before he had seen the Lords Christ 27 And he came by the spirit into the temple and when the parents brought in the childe Jesus to do for him after the custom of the law 28 Then took he him up in his arms and blessed God and said 29 Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him 34 And Simeon according to the law of the Lord they returned into Galilee to their own city Nazareth 40 And the childe grew and waxed strong in spirit filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem * Deâ— 16.1 every year at the feast of the pass-over 42 And when he was twelve year old they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast 43 And when they had fulfilled the days as they returned the childe Jesus tarried behinde in Jerusalem and Joseph and his mother knew not of it 44 But they supposing him to have been in the company went a days journey and they sought him among their kinsfolk and among their acquaintance 45 And when they found him not they turned back again to Jerusalem seeking him 46 And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctours both hearing them and asking them questions 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers 48 And when they saw him they that to smell thereto shall even be cut off from his people CHAP. XXXI 1 Bezaleel and Aholiab are called and made meet for the work of the tabernacle 12 The observation of the sabbath is again commanded 18 Moses receiveth the two tables ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 See I have called by name Bezaleel the * 1 Chr. â— 20. son of Uri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship 4 To devise cunning works to work in gold in silver and in brass 5 And in cutting of stones to set them and in carving of timber to work in all manner of workmanship 6 And I behold I have given with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan and in the hearts of all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom that they may make all that I have commanded thee 7 The tabernacle of the congregation and the ark of the testimony and the mercy-seat that is thereupon and all the †Heb. vessels furniture of the tabernacle 8 And the table and his furniture and the pure candlestick with all his furniture and the altar of incense 9 And the altar of burnt-offering with all his furniture and the laver and his foot 10 And the clothes of service and the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons to minister in the priests office 11 And the anointing oyl and sweet incense for the holy place according to all that I have commanded thee shall they do 12 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel saying Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep for it is a signe between me and you throughout your generations that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctifie you 14 * Chap. 20.8 Deut. 5. â—2 Ezek. 20.12 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore for it is holy unto you Every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death for whosoever doeth any work therein that soul shall be cut off from amongst his people 15 Six days may work be done but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest †Heb. holiness holy to the LORD whosoever doth any work in the sabbath-day he shall surely be put to death 16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath to observe the sabbath throughout their generations for a perpetual covenant 17 It is a signe between me and the children of Israel for ever for * Gen. 1.31 2. â— in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed 18 ¶ And he gave unto Moses when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sâ—nai * Deut. 9.10 two tables of testimony tables of stone written with the finger of God CHAP. The tabernacle his tent and his covering his taches and his boards his bars his pillars and his sockets 12 The ark and the staves thereof with the mercy-seat and the vail of the covering 13 The table and his staves and all his vessels and the shew-bread 14 The candlestick also for the light and his furniture and his lamps with the oyl for the light 15 * Chap. 30.1 And the incense-altar and his staves and the anointing oyl and the sweet incense and the hanging for the door at the entring in of the tabernacle 16 * Chap. 27.1 The altar of burnt-offering with his brasen grate his staves and all his vessels the laver and his foot 17 The hangings of the court his pillars and their sockets and the hanging for the door of the court 18 The pins of the tabernacle the pins of the court and their cords 19 The clothes of service to do service in the holy place the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons to minister in the priests office 20 ¶ And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses 21 And they came every one whose heart stirred him up and every one whom his spirit made willing and they brought the LORDS offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation and for all his service and for the holy garments 22 And they came both men and women as many as were willing-hearted and brought bracelets and ear-rings and rings and tablets all jewels of gold and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD 23 And every man with whom was found blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen and goats hair and red skins of rams and badgers skins brought them 24 Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the LORDS offering and every man with whom was found shittim-wood for any work of the service brought it 25 And all the women that were wise-hearted did spin with their hands and brought that which they had spun both of blue and of purple and of scarlet and of fine linen 26 And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats hair 27 And the rulers brought onyx-stones and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breast-plate 28 And * Chap 30.23 spice and oyl for the light and for the anointing oyl and for the sweet incense 29 The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD every man and woman whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses 30 ¶ And Moses said unto the children of Israel See * Chap. 31.2 the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah 31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God in wisdom in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship 32 And to devise curious works to work in gold and in silver and in brass 33 And in the cutting of stones to set them and in carving of wood to make any manner of cunning work 34 And he hath put in his heart that he may teach both he and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart to work all manner of work of the engraver and of the cunning workman and of the embroiderer in blue and in purple in scarlet and in fine linen and of the weaver even of them that do any work and of those that devise cunning work CHAP. XXXVI 1 The offerings are delivered to the workmen 5 The liberality of the people is restrained 8 The curtains of cherubims 14 The curtains of goats hair 19 The covering of skins 20 The boards with their sockets 31 The bars 35 The vail 37 The hanging for the door THen wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary according to all that the LORD had commanded 2 And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it 3 And they received of Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary to make it withal And they brought yet unto him free-offerings every morning 4 And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary came every man from his work which they made 5 ¶ And they spake unto Moses saying The people bring much more then enough for the service of the work which the LORD commanded to make 6 And Moses gave commandment and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp saying Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary so the people were restrained from bringing 7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it and too much 8 ¶ * Chap. 26.3 4. And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined

XXI 1 Of the priests mourning 6 Of their hâ—liness 8 Of their estimation 7 13 Of their marriages 16 The priests that have blemishes must not miniâ—ter in the sanctuary ANd the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron and say unto them There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people 2 But for his kin that is near unto him that is for his mother and for his father and for his son and for his daughter and for his brother 3 And for his sister a virgin that is nigh unto him which hath had no husband for her may he be defiled 4 But ‖ Or being an husband among his people be shall not defile himself for his wife c. he shall not defile himself being a chief man among his people to profane himself 5 * Chap. 19.27 They shall not make baldness upon their head neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh 6 They shall be holy unto their God and not profane the name of their God for the offerings of the LORD made by fire and the bread of their God they do offer therefore they shall be holy 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore or profane neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband for he is holy unto his God 8 Thou shalt sanctifie him therefore for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee for I the LORD which sanctifie you am holy 9 ¶ And the daughter of any priest if she profane her self by playing the whore she profaneth her father she shall be burnt with fire 10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren upon whose head the anointing oyl was poured and that is consecrated to put on the garments shall not uncover his head nor rend his clothes 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body nor defile himself for his father or for his mother 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God for the crown of the anointing oyl of his God is upon him I am the LORD 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginâ—ty 14 A widow or a divorced woman or profane or an harlot these shall he not take but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people for I the LORD do sanctifie him 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 17 Speak unto Aaron saying Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish let him not approach to offer the ‖ Or food bread of his God 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish he shall not approach a blinde man or a lame or he that hath a flat nose or any thing * Chap. 22.23 superfluous 19 Or a man that is broken-footed or broken-handed 20 Or crook-backt or ‖ Or too slender a dwarf or that hath a blemish in his eye or be scurvy or scabbed or hath his stones broken 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire he hath a blemish he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God 22 He shall eat the bread of his God both of the most holy and of the holy 23 Onely he shall not go in unto the vail nor come nigh unto the altar because he hath a blemish that he profane not my sanctuarieâ— for I the LORD do sanctifie them 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron and to his sons and unto all the children of Israel CHAP. XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a †Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water
the priest shall value him according to his ability that vowed shall the priest value him 9 And if it be a beast whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy 10 He shall not alter it nor change it a good for a bad or a bad for a good and if he shall at all change beast for beast then it and the exchange thereof shall be holy 11 And if it be any unclean beast of which they do not offer a sacrifice unto the LORD then he shall present the beast before the priest 12 And the priest shall value it whether it be good or bad †Heb. according to thy estimation O priest c. as thou valuest it who art the priest so shall it be 13 But if he will at all redeem it then he shall add a fifth part thereof unto thy estimation 14 ¶ And when a man shall sanctifie his house to be holy unto the LORD then the priest shall estimate it whether it be good or bad as the priest shall estimate it so shall it stand 15 And if he that sanctified it will redeem his house then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it and it shall be his 16 And if a man shall sanctifie unto the LORD some part of a field of his possession then thy estimation shall be according to the seed thereof ‖ Or the land of an homer c. an homer of barley-seed shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver 17 If he sanctifie his field from the year of jubile according to thy estimation it shall stand 18 But if he sanctifie his field after the jubile then the priest shall reckon unto him the money according to the years that remain even unto the year of the jubile and it shall be abated from thy estimation 19 And if he that sanctified the field will in any wise redeem it then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it and it shall be assured to him 20 And if he will not redeem the field or if he have sold the field to another man it shall not be redeemed any more 21 But the field when it goeth out in the jubile shall be holy unto the LORD as a field devoted the possession thereof shall be the priests 22 And if a man sanctifie unto the LORD a field which he hath bought which is not of the fields of his possession 23 Then the priest shall reckon unto him the worth of thy estimation even unto the year of the jubile and he shall give thine estimation in that day as a holy thing unto the LORD 24 In the year of the jubile the field shall return unto him of whom it was bought even to him to whom the possession of the land did belong 25 And all thy estimations shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary * Exod. 30.13 Numb 3.47 Ezek. 45.12 twenty gerahs shall be the shekel 26 ¶ Onely the †Heb. first-born c. firstling of the beasts which should be the LORDS firstling no man shall sanctifie it whether it be ox or sheep it is the LORDS 27 And if it be of an unclean beast then he shall redeem it according to thine estimation and shall add a fifth part of it thereto or if it be not redeemed then it shall be sold according to thy estimation 28 * Josh 6.19 Notwithstanding no devoted thing that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath both of man and beast and of the field of his possession shall be sold or redeemed every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD 29 None devoted which shall be devoted of men shall be redeemed but shall surely be put to death 30 And all the tithe of the land whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree is the LORDS it is holy unto the LORD 31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof 32 And concerning the tithe of the herd or of the flock even of whatsoever passeth under the rod the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD 33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad neither shall he change it and if he change it at all then both it and the change thereof shall be holy it shall not be redeemed 34 These are the commandments which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai ¶ The fourth book of Moses called NUMBERS CHAP. I. 1 God commandeth Moses to number the people 5 The princes of the tribes 17 The number of every tribe 47 The Levites are exempted for the service of the Lord. ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the tabernacle of the congregation on the first day of the second moneth in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt saying 2 * Exod. 30.12 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel after their families by the house of their fathers with the number of their names every male by their poll 3 From twenty years old and upward all that are able to go forth to war in Israel thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies 4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe every one head of the house of his fathers 5 ¶ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you Of the tribe of Reuben Elizur the son of Shedeur 6 Of Simeon Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 7 Of Judah Nahshon the son of Amminadab 8 Of Issachar Nethaneel the son of Zuar 9 Of Zebulun Eliab the son of Helon 10 Of the children of Joseph of Ephraim Elishama the son of Ammihud of Manasseh Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 11 Of Benjamin Abidan the son of Gideoni 12 Of Dan Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 13 Of Asher Pagiel the son of Ocran 14 Of Gad Eliasaph the son of Deuel 15 Of Naphtali Ahira the son of Enan 16 These were the renowned of the congregation princes of the tribes of their fathers heads of thousands in Israel 17 ¶ And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names 18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second moneth and they declared their pedegrees after their families by the house of their fathers according to the number of the names from twenty years old and upward by their poll 19 As the LORD commanded Moses so he numbred them in the wilderness of Sinai 20 And the children of Reuben Israels eldest son by their generations after their families by the house of their fathers according to the number of the names by their poll every male from twenty years old and upward all that were able to go forth to war 21 Those that were
of Ahab and found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah that ministred to Ahaziah he slew them 9 * 2 Kin. 9.27 And he fought Ahaziah and they caught him for he was hid in Samaria and brought him to Jehu and when they had slain him they buried him because said they he is the son of Jehoshaphat who fought the LORD with all his heart So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom 10 ¶ * 2 Kin. 11. â— But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead she arose destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah 11 But Jehoshabeath the daughter of the king took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the kings sons that were slain and put him and his nurse in a bed-chamber So Jehoshabeath the daughter of King Jehoram the wife of Jehoiada the priest for she was the sister of Ahaziah hid him from Athaliah so that she slew him not 12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years and Athaliah reigned over the land CHAP. XXIII 1 Jehoiada having sit things in order maketh Joash king 12 Athaliah is slain 16. Jehoiada restoreth the worship of God ANd * 2 Kin. 11.4 c. in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthned himself and took the captains of hundreds Azariah the son of Jeroham and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan and Azar ah the son of Obed and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah and Elishaphat the son of Zichri into covenant with him 2 And they went about in Judah and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah and the chief of the fathers of Israel and they came to Jerusalem 3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God and he said unto them Behold the kings son shall reign as the LORD hath * 2 Sam. 7.12 1 Kin. 2 4. and 9.5 Châ—â— 16. and 7.18 said of the sons of David 4 This is the thing that ye shall do A third part of you entring on the sabbath of the priests and of the Levites shali be porters of the †Heb. â—tresâ—olds doors 5 And a third part shall be at the kings house and a third part at the gate of the foundation and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD 6 But let none come into the house of the LORD save the priests and they that minister of the Levites they shall go in for they are holy but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD 7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about every man with his weapons in his hand and whosoever else cometh into the house he shall be put to death but be you with the king when he cometh in and when he goeth out 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded and took every man his men that were to come in on the saboath with them that were to go out on the sabbath for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses 9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears and bucklers and shields that had been king Davids which were in the house of God 10 And he set all the people every man having his weapon in his hand from the right †Heb. shoulder side of the †Heb. house temple to the left side of the temple along by the altar and the temple by the king round about 11 Then they brought out the kings son and put upon him the crown and * Deu. 17.18 gave him the testimony and made him king and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said †Heb. Let the king live God save the king 12 ¶ Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king she came to the people into the house of the LORD 13 And she looked and behold the king stood at his pillar at the entring in and the princes and the trumpets by the king and all the people of the land rejoyced and sounded with trumpets also the singers with instruments of musick and such as taught to sing praise Then Athaliah rent her clothes and said †Heb. conspiracy Treason treason 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host and said unto them Have her forth of the ranges and whoso followeth her let him be slain with the sword For the priest said Slay her not in the house of the LORD 15 So they laid hands on her and when she was come to the entring of the hors gate by the kings house they slew her there 16 ¶ And Jehoiada made a covenant between him and between all the people and between the king that they should be the LORDS people 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and brakeit down and brake his altars and his images in pieces and * Deu. 13.9 slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites whom David had * 1 Chr. 24.1 distributed in the house of the LORD to offer the burnt-offerings of the LORD as it is written in the * Na. 28.2 law of Moses with rejoyting and with singing as it was ordained †Heb. by the hands of David by David 19 And he set the * 1 Chr 26 1 c. porters at the gates of the house of the LORD that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in 20 And he took the captains of hundreds and the nobles and the governours of the people and all the people of the land and brought down the king from the house of the LORD and they came through the high gate into the kings house and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom 21 And all the people of the land rejoyced and the city was quiet after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword CHAP. XXIV 1 Joash reigneth well all the days of Jehoiada 4 He giveth order for the repair of the temple 15 Jehoiada his death and honourable burial 17 Joash falling to idolatry slayeth Zechariah the son of Jehoiada 23 Joash is spoiled by the Syrians and slain by Zabad and Jehozabad 37 Amaziah succeedeth him JOash * 2 Kin. 12 1 c was seven years old when he began to reign and he reigned fourty years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Zibeah of Beer-sheba 2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest 3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives and he begat sons and daughters 4 ¶ And it came to pass after this that Joash was minded †Heb. to renew to repair the house of the LORD 5 And
strength but wisdom is profitable to direct 11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment and †Heb. the master of the tongue a babbler is no better 12 * Pr. 10.32 12.13 The words of a wise mans mouth are †Heb. grace gracious but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself 13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness and the end of †Heb. his mouth his talk is mischievous madness 14 * Pr. 15.2 A fool also †Heb. multiplieth words is full of words a man cannot tell what shall be and * Ch. 3.22 6.12 what shall be after him who can tell him 15 The labour of the foolish wearteth every one of them because he knoweth not how to go to the city 16 ¶ * Is 3.3 4. Wo to thee O land when thy king is a childe and thy princes eat in the morning 17 Blessed art thou O land when thy king is the son of nobles and thy princes eat in due season for strength not for drunkenness 18 ¶ By much flothfulness the building decayeth and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through 19 ¶ A feast is made for laughter and * Ps 104.15 wine †Heb. maketh glad the life maketh merry but money answereth all things 20 ¶ * Ex. 22.28 Curse not the king no not in thy ‖ Or conscience thought and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber for a bird of the air shall carry the voice and that which hath wings shall tell the matter CHAP. XI 1 Directions for charity 7 Death in life 9 and the day of judgement in the days of youth are to be thought on CAst thy bread †Heb. upon the face of the waters upon the waters for thou shalt finde it after * Deu. 15.10 Pr. 19.17 Mat. 10.42 many days 2 Give a portion to seven and also to eight for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth 3 If the clouds be full of rain they empty themselves upon the earth and if the tree fall toward the south or toward the north in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sowe and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with childe even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all 6 In the morning sowe thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether †Heb. shall be right shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good 7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun 8 But if a man live many years and rejoyce in them all yet let him remember the days of darkness for they shall be many All that cometh is vanity 9 ¶ Rejoyce O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thy heart and in the sight of thine eyes but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement 10 Therefore remove ‖ Or anger sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh for childhood and youth are vanity CHAP. XII 1 The Creatour is to be remembred in due time 8 The preachers care to edifie 13 The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity * Pr. 22.6 REmember now thy Creatour in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them 2 While the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkned not the clouds return after the rain 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and ‖ Or the grinders fail because they grinde little the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows be darkned 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets when the sound of the grinding is low and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of musick shall be brought sow 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high and fears shall be in the way and the almond-tree shall flourish and the grashopper shall be a burden and desire shall fail because man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets 6 Or ever the â—ilver cord be loosed or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern 7 * Gen. 3.19 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it 8 ¶ * Ch. 1.2 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher all is vanity 9 And ‖ Or the more wise the preacher was c. moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yea he gave good heed and sought out and * 1 Kin. 4.32 set in order many proverbs 10 The preacher sought to finde out †Heb. words of delight acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth 11 The words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastned by the masters of assemblies which are given from one shepherd 12 And further by these my son be admonished of making many books there is no end and much ‖ Or reading study is a weariness of the flesh 13 ¶ ‖ Or The end of the matter even all that hath-been heard is Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man 14 For * Ro. 2.16 14.20 2 Cor. â— 10 God shall bring every work into judgement with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil ¶ The SONG of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 1 The churches lovâ— unto Christ 5 She confesseth her deformity 7 and prayeth to be â—irested to his flock 8 Christ directeth her to the shepherds tents 9 and shewing his love to her 11 giveth her gracious promises 12 The church and Christ congratulate one another THe song of songs which is Solomons 2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth * Ch. 4.10 for †Heb. thy loves thy love is better then wine 3 Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth therefore do the virgins love thee 4 * Joh. 6.44 Draw me we will run after thee the king hath brought me into his chambers we will be glad and rejoyce in thee we will remember thy love more then wine ‖ Or they love thee uprightly the upright love thee 5 I am
And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto
to rebuke him 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples he rebuked Peter saying Get thee behinde me Satan for thou savourest not the things that be of God but the things that be of men 34 ¶ And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also he said unto them * Mat. 30 3◠Whosoever will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospels the same shall save it 36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul 38 * Mat. ◠33 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels CHAP. IX 2 Jesus is transfigured 11 He instructeth his disciples concerning the coming of Elias 14 casteth forth a dumb and deaf spirit 30 foretelleth his death and resurrection 33 exhorteth his disciples to humility 38 bidding them not to prohibit such as be not against them nor to give offence to any of the faithful ANd he said unto them * Mat. 16.28 Verily I say unto you that there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power 2 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter and James and John and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves and he was transfigured before them 3 And his raiment became shining exceeding white as snow so as no fuller on earth can white them 4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses and they were talking with Jesus 5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus Master it is good for us to be here and let us make three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 6 For he wist not what to say for they were sore afraid 7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud saying This is my beloved Son hear him 8 And suddenly when they had looked round about they saw no man any more save Jesus onely with themselves 9 And as they came down from the mountain he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen till the Son of man were risen from the dead 10 And they kept that saying with themselves questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean 11 ¶ And they asked him saying Why say the scribes that Elias must first come 12 And he answered and told them Elias verily cometh first and restoreth all things and * Isa 53.24 how it is written of the Son of man that he must suffer many things and be set at nought 13 But I say unto you that Elias is indeed come and they have done unto him whatsoever they lifted as it is written of him 14 ¶ * Mat. 17.14 And when he came to his disciples he saw a great multitude about them and the scribes questioning with them 15 And straightway all the people when they beheld him were greatly amazed and running to him saluted him 16 And he asked the scribes What question ye ‖ Or among your selves with them 17 And one of the multitude answered and said Master I have brought unto thee my son which hath a dumb spirit 18 And wheresoever he taketh him he ‖ Or dasheth him teareth him and he fometh and gnasheth with his teeth and pineth away and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out and they could not 19 He answered him and saith O faithless generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him unto me 20 And they brought him unto him and when he saw him straightway the spirit tare him he fell on the ground and wallowed foming 21 And he asked his father How long is it ago since this came unto him And he said Of a childe 22 And oft-times it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him but if thou canst do any thing have compassion on us and help us 23 Jesus said unto him If thou canst beleeve all things are possible to him that beleeveth 24 And straightway the father of the childe cried out and said with tears Lord I beleeve help thou mine unbelief 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together he rebuked the foul spirit saying unto him Thou dumb and deaf spirit I charge thee Come out of him and enter no more into him 26 And the spirit cried and rent him sore and came out of him and he was as one dead insomuch that many said He is dead 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose 28 And when he was come into the house his disciples asked him privately Why could not we cast him out 29 And he said unto them This kinde can come forth by nothing but by prayer and lasting 30 ¶ * Mat. 17.22 And they departed thence and passed through Galilee and he would not that any man should know it 31 For he taught his disciples and said unto them The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men and they shall kill him and after that he is killed he shall rise the third day 32 But they understood not that saying and were afraid to ask him 33 ¶ * Mat. 18.1 And he came to Capernaum and being in the house he asked them What was it that ye disputed among your selves by the way 34 But they held their peace for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest 35 And he sat down and called the twelve and saith unto them If any man desire to be first the same shall be last of all servant of all 36 And he took a childe and set him in the midst of them and when he had taken him in his arms he said unto them 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name receiveth me and whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me but him that sent-me 38 ¶ * Luk. 9.49 And John answered him saying Master we saw one casting out devils in thy name and he followeth not us and we forbad him because he followeth not us 39 But Jesus said Forbid him not * 1 Cor. 12.3 for there is no man which shall do a nuracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me 40 For he that is not against XIII 1 Christ foretelleth the destruction of the temple 9 the persecutions for the gospel 10 that the gospel must be preached to all nations 14 that great calamities shall happen to the Jews 24 and the manner of his coming to judgement 32 The hour whereof being known to none every man is to watch and pray that we be not found unprovided when he cometh to eath one particularly by death ANd * Mat. 24. ◠as he went out of the temple one of his disciples saith unto him Master see what manner of stones and what buildings are hero 2 And Jesus answering said unto him Seest thou these great buildings there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately 4 * Mat. 24.3 Tell us when shall these things be and what shall be the signe when all these things shall be fulfilled 5 And Jesus answering them began to say Take heed lest any man deceive you 6 For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many 7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars be ye not troubled for such things must needs be but the end shall not be yet 8 For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be earth-quakes in divers places and there shall be famines and troubles these are the beginnings of ‖ The word in the original importeth the pains of a woman in travail sorrows 9 ¶ But take heed to your selves for they shall deliver you up to councils and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers kings for my sake for a testimony against them 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations 11 * Mat. 10.19 But when they shall lead you and deliver you up take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak neither do ye premeditate but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour that speak ye for it is not ye that speak but the holy Ghost 12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death and the father the son and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake but he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved 14 ¶ * Mat. 24.15 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Damel the prophet standing where it ought not let him that readeth understand then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains 15 And let him that is on the house-top not go down into the house neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment 17 But wo to them that are with childe and to them that give suck in those days 18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter 19 For in those days shall be affliction such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time neither shall be 20 And except that the Lord had shortned those days no flesh should be saved but for the elects sake whom he hath chosen he hath shortned the days 21 * Mat. 24.23 And then if any man shall say to you Lo here is Christ or lo he is there beleeve him not 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce if it were possible even the elect 23 But take ye heed behold I have foretold you all things 24 ¶ * Mat. 24.29 But in those days after that tribulation the sun shall be darkned and the moon shall not give her sight 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory 27 And then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven 28 Now learn a parable of the fig-tree When her branch is yet tender and putteth sorth leaves ye know that summer is near 29 So ye in like manner When ye shall see these things come to pass know that it is nigh even at the doors 30 Verily I say unto you that this generation shall not pass till all these things be done 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away 32 ¶ But of that day and that hour knoweth no man no not the angels which are in heaven neither the Son but the Father 33 * Mat. 24.42 Take ye heed watch and pray for ye know not when the time is 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey who lest his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work and commanded the porter to watch 35 Watch ye therefore for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cock-crowing or in the morning 36 Lest coming suddenly he finde you sleeping 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all Watch. CHAP. of age and she lay a dying But as he went the people thronged him 43 ¶ And a woman having an issue of bloud twelve years which had â—â—entall her living upon physicians neither could be healed of any 44 Came behinde him and touched the border of his garment and immediately her issue of bloud stanched 45 And Jesus said Who touched me When all denied Peter and they that were with him said Master the multitude throng thee and preâ—â—s thee and sayest thou Who touched me 46 And Jesus said Some holy hath touched me for I perceive that vertue is gone out of me 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid she came trembling falling down before him she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him how she was healed immediatly 48 And he said unto her Daughter be of good comfort thy faith hath made thee whole go in peace 49 ¶ While he yet spake there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogues â—â—use saying to him Thy daughter is dead trouble not the Master 50 But when Jesus heard it he answered him saying Fear not believe only and she shall be made whole 51 And when he came into the house he suffered no man to go in save Peter and James and John the father the mother of the maiden 52 And all wept and bewailed her but he said Weep not she is not dead but the path 53 And they laughed him to scorn knowing that she was dead 54 And heâ—p â—t them all out and took her by the hand and called saying Maid Arise 55 And her spirit came again and she arose straightway and he commanded to give her meat 56 And her parents were astonished but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done CHAP. IX 1 Christ sendeth his apostles to work miracles and to preach 7 Herod desireth to set Christ 17 Christ feedeth five thousand 18 enquireth what opinion the world had of him foretelleth his passion 23 proposeth to all the pattern of his patience 28 The transfiguration 37 He healeth the lunatick 43 again forewarneth his disciples of his passion 46 commendeth humility 51 hiddeth them to shew mildness towards all without desire of revenge 57 Divers would follow him â—ut upon conditions THen * Mat. 10.1 he called his twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick 3 And he said unto them Take nothing for your journey neither staves nor serâ—â— neither bread neither money neither have two coats apiece 4 And whatsoever house ye enter into there abide thence depart 5 And whosoever will not receive you when ye go out of that city shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them 6 And they departed and went through the towns preaching the gospel and healing every where 7 ¶ * Mat. 14.1 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him and he was perplexed because that it was said of some that John was risen from the dead 8 And of some that Elias had appeared and of others that one of the old prophets was risen again 9 And Herod said John have I beheaded but who is this of whom I hear such things And he desired to see him 10 ¶ And the apostles when they were returned told him all that they had done * Mat. 14.13 And he took them and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida 11 And the people when they knew it followed him and he received them and spake unto them of the kingdom of God and healed them that had need of healing 12 * Mat. 14.15 And when the day began to wear away then came the twelve and said unto him Send the multitude away that they may go into the towns and countrey round about and lodge and get victuals for we are here in a desert place 13 But he said unto them Give ye them to eat And they said We have no more but five loaves and two fishes except we should go and buy meat for all this people 14 For they were about five thousand men And he said to his disciples Make them sit down by fifties in a company 15 And they did so and made them all sit down 16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes and looking up to heaven he blessed them and brake and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude 17 And they did eat and were all filled and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets 18 ¶ * Mat. 16.13 And it came to pass as he was alone praying his disciples were with him and he asked them saying Whom say the people that I am 19 They answering said John the Baptist but some say Elias and others say that one of the old prophets is risen again 20 He said unto them But whom say ye that I am Peter answering said The Christ of God 21 And he straitly charged them and commanded them to tell no man that thing 22 Saying * Mat. 17.22 The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be slain and be raised the third day 23 ¶ * Mat. 10.53 And he said to them all If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it but whosoever will lose his life for my sake the same shall save it 25 * Mat. 16.26 Mat. 8.36 For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world and lose himself or be cast away 26 * Mat. 10.35 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory and in his Fathers and of the holy angels 27 * Mat. 16.28 But I tell you of a truth there be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God 28 ¶ * Mat. 17.1 And it came to pass about an eight days after these ‖ Or things sayings he took Peter and John and James and went up into a mountain to pray 29 And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance was altered and his raiment was white and glistering 30 And behold there talked with him two men which were Moses and Elias 31 Who appeared in glory and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem 32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep and when they were awake they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him 33 And it came to pass as they departed from him Peter said unto Jesus Master it is good for us to be here
unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to
hour so great riches is come to nought And every ship-master and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning saying What city is like unto this great city 19 And they cast duâ—t on their heads and cried weeping and wailing saying Alas alas that great city wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness for in one hour is she made desolate 20 Rejoyce over her thou heaven and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone and cast it into the sea saying Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all 22 And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee and no craftsman of whatsoever craft he be shall be sound any more in thee and the sound of a milstone shall be heard no more at all in thee 23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee for thy merchants were the great men of the earth for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived 24 And in her was found the bloud of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth CHAP. XIX 1 God is praised in heaven for judging the great whore and avenging the bloud of his saints 7 The marriage of the Lamb. 10 The angel will not be worshipped 17 The fowls called to the great slaughter ANd after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Alleluia Salvation and glory and honour and power unto the Lord our God 2 For true and righteous are his judgements for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth with her sâ—rnication and hath avenged the bloud of his servants at her hand 3 And again they said Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever 4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne saying Amen Alleluia 5 And a voice came out of the throne saying Praise our God all ye his servants and ye that fear him both small and great 6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters and as the voice of mighty thundrings saying Alleluia for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth 7 Let us be glad and rejoyce and give honour to him for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made her self ready 8 And to her was granted that she should be arayed in fine linen clean and white for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints 9 And he saith unto me Write * Mat. 22.2 Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me These are the true sayings of God 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him and he said unto me * Chap. 22 9. See thou do it not I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus worship God for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesie 11 And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true and in righteousness he doth judge and make war 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire and on his head were many crowns and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself 13 * Isa 63.2 And he was clothed with a vesture dipt in bloud and his name is called The Word of God 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses clothed in fine linen white and clean 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword that with it he should smite the nations and he shall rule them with a rod of iron and he treadeth the wine-press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written * Chap. 17.14 KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice saying to all the fowls that flie in the midst of heaven Come and gather your selves together unto the supper of the great God 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of captains and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of them that sit on them and the flesh of all men both free and bond both small and great 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse and against his army 20 And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that worshipped his image These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse which sword proceeded out of his mouth and all the fowls were filled with their flesh CHAP. XX. 2 Satan bound for a thousand years 5 The first resurrection 6 they blessed that have part therein 7 Satan let loose again 8 God and Magog 10 The devil cast into the lake of fire and brimstone 12 The last and general resurrection ANd I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand 2 And he laid hold on the dragon that old serpent which is the devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon him that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled and after that he must be loosed a little season 4 And I saw thrones and they sat upon them and judgement was given unto them and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God and which had not worshipped the beast neither his image neither had received his mark upon their forcheads or in their hands and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished This is the first resurrection 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection on such the second death hath no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years 7 And when the thousand years are expired Satan shall be loosed out of his prison 8
