unto_o his_o grace_n the_o duke_n of_o argile_n her_o majesty_n high_a commissioner_n and_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o estate_n of_o parliament_n the_o petition_n of_o john_n corss_n writer_n in_o edinburgh_n humble_o show_v that_o the_o decease_a andrew_n martin_n writer_n in_o edinburg'h_n from_o the_o great_a respect_n he_o bear_v to_o his_o native_a country_n and_o particular_o for_o preservation_n of_o the_o ancient_a record_n thereof_o have_v in_o the_o year_n of_o god_n 1650_o at_o which_o time_n he_o have_v the_o care_n of_o the_o record_n of_o the_o privy_a seal_n abscond_v himself_o with_o they_o in_o the_o highlands_n of_o this_o kingdom_n where_o he_o preserve_v they_o from_o the_o enemy_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o expense_n and_o fatigue_n there_o be_v upward_o of_o 100_o large_a folio_n and_o that_o for_o the_o space_n of_o ten_o year_n at_o least_o to_o the_o hazard_n of_o his_o life_n and_o irrecoverable_a ruin_n of_o his_o family_n and_o the_o say_n book_n be_v some_o time_n ago_o fall_v in_o your_o petitioner_n hand_n through_o the_o death_n of_o the_o say_a andrew_n martin_n and_o of_o his_o son_n who_o your_o petitioner_n be_v necessitat_fw-la to_o supply_n in_o advance_v considerable_a sum_n to_o he_o on_o the_o faith_n of_o these_o book_n and_o conceive_v they_o may_v be_v of_o public_a use_n especial_o see_v they_o contain_v the_o record_n of_o charter_n precept_n gift_n of_o teind_n presentation_n to_o kirk_n and_o benefice_n in_o the_o several_a provostry_n priory_n and_o prebendry_n from_o the_o year_n of_o god_n 1499_o to_o the_o year_n of_o god_n 1650_o together_o with_o their_o minute_n book_n during_o all_o that_o time_n exact_o correspond_v as_o also_o a_o record_n contain_v the_o taxation_n upon_o the_o clergy_n of_o scotland_n for_o send_v their_o delegate_n to_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n and_o other_o old_a taxation_n your_o petitioner_n also_o humble_o conceive_v that_o these_o record_n be_v of_o the_o more_o use_n and_o value_n because_o the_o record_n of_o the_o chancery_n and_o other_o record_n suffer_v much_o when_o they_o be_v transport_v to_o england_n and_o much_o more_o by_o the_o misfortune_n that_o befall_v they_o at_o sea_n in_o their_o return_n may_v it_o therefore_o please_v your_o grace_n and_o lordship_n to_o order_v the_o foresaid_n record_n to_o be_v put_v into_o public_a custody_n and_o to_o appoint_v your_o petitioner_n such_o a_o reward_n for_o the_o expense_n and_o great_a pain_n that_o have_v be_v bestow_v in_o preserve_v these_o record_n as_o your_o grace_n and_o lordship_n in_o your_o great_a goodness_n and_o bounty_n shall_v think_v fit_a and_o your_o petitioner_n shall_v ever_o pray_v etc._n etc._n
