to_o differ_v and_o what_o have_v thou_o o_o man_n but_o what_o thou_o have_v receive_v he_o shall_v still_o have_v something_o to_o boast_v of_o and_o the_o work_n of_o his_o conversion_n shall_v at_o best_a be_v half_v betwixt_o grace_n and_o his_o own_o freewill_n this_o will_v necessary_o follow_v if_o grace_n do_v not_o through_o the_o work_n and_o so_o god_n shall_v miss_v of_o his_o end_n a_o 5_o ground_n of_o confirmation_n be_v take_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n decree_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n betwixt_o jehovah_n and_o the_o mediator_n and_o of_o the_o power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n in_o carry_v on_o this_o work_n which_o we_o put_v together_o for_o brevity_n cause_n from_o all_o which_o it_o will_v be_v clear_a that_o there_o be_v and_o must_v be_v a_o necessary_a connexion_n betwixt_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n on_o believer_n and_o the_o effect_n and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o man_n freewill_n to_o resist_v bargain_n and_o god_n design_n in_o beget_v faith_n and_o in_o bring_v soul_n through_o grace_n to_o glory_n be_v 3._o if_o we_o consider_v the_o lord_n power_n in_o beginning_n and_o promove_v and_o his_o wisdom_n in_o carry_v on_o of_o this_o work_n his_o power_n whereby_o he_o raise_v the_o dead_a and_o his_o wisdom_n whereby_o he_o lead_v from_o death_n to_o life_n be_v it_o possible_a to_o conceive_v or_o imagine_v these_o to_o be_v apply_v by_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n but_o this_o doctrine_n must_v needs_o hold_v that_o the_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n powerful_o apply_v have_v always_o faith_n and_o conversion_n follow_v on_o it_o and_o that_o the_o lord_n leave_v it_o not_o to_o the_o option_n of_o elect_a soul_n to_o believe_v or_o not_o to_o believe_v as_o they_o please_v he_o must_v not_o he_o can_v be_v frustrate_a of_o his_o end_n and_o design_n but_o he_o must_v bring_v they_o to_o a_o cordial_a closure_n with_o christ_n by_o faith_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n use_v 1_o the_o first_o use_n serve_v to_o fix_v you_o in_o the_o faith_n of_o this_o great_a truth_n and_o though_o we_o use_v not_o neither_o be_v it_o needful_a to_o trouble_v you_o with_o long_a question_n and_o debate_n yet_o when_o the_o like_a of_o this_o doctrine_n come_v in_o our_o way_n especial_o in_o such_o a_o time_n wherein_o the_o pure_a truth_n of_o god_n and_o this_o among_o the_o rest_n be_v trouble_v and_o call_v in_o question_n it_o be_v requisite_a that_o a_o word_n be_v speak_v for_o your_o confirmation_n and_o establishment_n and_o we_o will_v hence_o have_v you_o fix_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o these_o two_o 1._o of_o the_o impotency_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o beginning_n or_o promove_v aught_o of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n which_o belong_v to_o
soldier_n and_o we_o esteem_v he_o not_o that_o be_v we_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o owe_v he_o more_o respect_n esteem_v he_o not_o and_o hence_o he_o conclude_v that_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o but_o few_o believe_v on_o he_o and_o so_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v he_o go_v on_o to_o describe_v his_o humiliation_n and_o to_o remove_v the_o offence_n that_o may_v be_v take_v at_o it_o sure_o he_o have_v bear_v our_o grief_n etc._n etc._n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v there_o be_v no_o such_o cause_n to_o scar_n and_o stumble_v at_o christ_n for_o his_o lowness_n and_o base_a outward_a condition_n for_o it_o be_v not_o for_o himself_o but_o for_o we_o that_o he_o become_v so_o low_a and_o therefore_o it_o do_v not_o become_v we_o to_o think_v so_o little_a of_o he_o his_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n be_v humane_a infirmity_n that_o he_o subject_v himself_o to_o for_o our_o sake_n for_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o he_o suffer_v for_o we_o be_v speak_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o nature_n he_o be_v in_o all_o point_v tempt_v like_a as_o we_o be_v yet_o without_o sin_n say_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 4.15_o 3._o they_o distinguish_v infirmity_n in_o these_o that_o be_v call_v natural_a and_o common_a to_o all_o man_n as_o man_n and_o these_o that_o be_v personal_a and_o acquire_v as_o flow_v from_o some_o defect_n in_o generation_n or_o be_v draw_v on_o by_o some_o intemperance_n grossness_n in_o the_o life_n and_o conversation_n as_o some_o family_n be_v subject_a to_o disease_n that_o come_v by_o generation_n other_o draw_v on_o disease_n by_o whoredom_n drunkenness_n and_o the_o like_a now_o our_o lord_n be_v free_a of_o these_o last_o because_o be_v conceive_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o womb_n of_o the_o virgin_n there_o be_v no_o defect_n in_o his_o generation_n and_o be_v blameless_a in_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n he_o can_v acquire_v none_o of_o these_o infirmity_n and_o therefore_o the_o infirmity_n which_o he_o bear_v be_v of_o the_o first_o sort_n that_o be_v such_o as_o be_v common_a to_o all_o man_n and_o to_o man_n as_o man_n and_o hence_o we_o think_v it_o probable_a which_o some_o say_v that_o as_o our_o lord_n be_v not_o sick_a so_o he_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o sickness_n be_v so_o perfect_a in_o his_o constitution_n or_o complexion_n which_o make_v for_o the_o glory_n of_o grace_n and_o be_v to_o redeem_v his_o people_n be_v to_o become_v man_n this_o be_v here_o suppose_a and_o prophesy_v of_o as_o the_o first_o step_n of_o his_o humiliation_n he_o be_v call_v a_o man_n and_o it_o be_v a_o aggravation_n of_o it_o that_o he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o man_n of_o sorrow_n or_o take_v our_o lord_n messiah_n to_o be_v already_o come_v we_o may_v take_v the_o observation_n thus_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n the_o eternal_a son_n of_o the_o eternal_a father_n be_v also_o a_o true_a and_o real_a man_n a_o common_a truth_n yet_o a_o truth_n fundamental_a to_o the_o gospel_n second_o instance_n of_o some_o folk_n that_o speak_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o attain_v life_n through_o he_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o merit_n but_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o strength_n for_o such_o will_v say_v we_o hope_v through_o christ_n strength_n to_o come_v to_o heaven_n their_o meaning_n wherein_o be_v that_o he_o will_v help_v they_o so_o to_o repent_v and_o ascrib_n to_o christ_n righteousness_n this_o much_o that_o it_o make_v our_o own_o righteousness_n to_o be_v accept_v as_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n which_o in_o some_o respect_n be_v worse_a than_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n seek_v a_o perfect_a righteousness_n but_o this_o way_n offer_v a_o imperfect_a righteousness_n and_o to_o mend_v and_o to_o eke_o out_o our_o imperfect_a righteousness_n it_o take_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n but_o there_o be_v no_o such_o covenant_n or_o way_n of_o justification_n in_o scripture_n for_o god_n make_v but_o two_o covenant_n for_o man_n to_o attain_v life_n by_o one_o of_o work_n which_o be_v now_o impossible_a the_o other_o of_o grace_n by_o which_o only_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o attain_v justification_n and_o life_n this_o make_v a_o three_o covenant_n or_o contrivance_n by_o a_o mixture_n party_n of_o some_o work_n in_o we_o and_o partly_o of_o some_o grace_n in_o christ_n to_o make_v up_o what_o be_v inlake_v in_o our_o work_n and_o yet_o this_o way_n be_v very_o please_v to_o our_o nature_n and_o that_o to_o which_o we_o be_v much_o incline_v for_o justification_n for_o man_n be_v natural_o dispose_v to_o think_v that_o they_o give_v christ_n enough_o when_o they_o allow_v his_o righteousness_n to_o make_v up_o what_o be_v defective_a in_o their_o own_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o christ_n merit_n do_v wash_v our_o duty_n but_o our_o duty_n come_v never_o up_o to_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o justification_n in_o whole_a oâ—_n the_o text_n and_o before_o we_o come_v to_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o justification_n we_o shall_v brief_o observe_v two_o or_o three_o thing_n that_o lie_v obvious_o in_o our_o way_n the_o 1._o whereof_o be_v this_o that_o the_o absolve_a of_o a_o sinner_n through_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o native_a result_n of_o christ_n purchase_n and_o the_o great_a intendment_n of_o it_o his_o suffering_n and_o soul-travel_n be_v undergo_v to_o procure_v justification_n to_o many_o so_o that_o if_o we_o will_v know_v what_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n here_o it_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v many_o be_v justify_v therefore_o rom._n 5.9_o it_o be_v attribute_v to_o his_o blood_n be_v justify_v by_o his_o blood_n we_o shall_v be_v save_v from_o wrath_n and_o 2_o cor._n 5._o ult_n he_o be_v make_v sin_n for_o we_o who_o know_v no_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n through_o he_o that_o the_o thing_n which_o christ_n intend_v in_o hâ—s_n death_n be_v not_o a_o mere_a possibility_n that_o sinner_n may_v be_v justify_v nor_o to_o lay_v down_o a_o conditional_a way_n of_o their_o justification_n whereby_o â—hâ—y_o may_v come_v or_o not_o come_v to_o it_o and_o so_o to_o make_v it_o possible_a buâ—_n that_o which_o he_o intend_v be_v that_o their_o justification_n may_v follow_v absolute_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v instant_o and_o without_o the_o interveen_n of_o a_o condition_n for_o here_o his_o knowledge_n come_v in_o as_o the_o condition_n but_o that_o which_o i_o mean_v be_v that_o he_o diâ—d_v that_o their_o justification_n may_v actual_o and_o certain_o follow_v as_o a_o fruit_n of_o his_o purchase_n in_o a_o word_n his_o death_n and_o suffering_n be_v not_o to_o make_v justification_n possible_a to_o all_o but_o that_o so_o many_o as_o he_o bargain_v for_o may_v be_v absolute_o justify_v or_o that_o many_o that_o be_v all_o the_o elect_n may_v be_v actual_o justify_v because_o he_o shaâ—l_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n therefore_o by_o his_o knowledge_n they_o shall_v be_v justify_v we_o observe_v it_o for_o these_o end_n or_o uses_n 1._o to_o give_v a_o answer_n to_o that_o question_n what_o be_v the_o native_a result_n of_o christ_n death_n to_o his_o people_n we_o say_v it_o be_v their_o absolute_a and_o actual_a justification_n these_o that_o will_v extend_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n so_o broad_a and_o wide_a as_o to_o leave_v out_o none_o say_v in_o effect_n that_o the_o design_n thereof_o be_v to_o lay_v down_o such_o a_o way_n as_o make_v it_o possible_a to_o all_o to_o be_v justify_v and_o yet_o such_o a_o way_n as_o make_v it_o possible_a that_o none_o at_o all_o shall_v be_v justify_v for_o it_o hirg_v justification_n on_o the_o free_a will_n of_o the_o creature_n &_o so_o in_o strive_v to_o make_v grace_n broad_a than_o god_n allow_v they_o come_v to_o make_v it_o none_o at_o all_o by_o leave_v it_o on_o man_n freewill_n whether_o it_o shall_v be_v effectual_a or_o not_o but_o bless_v be_v god_n the_o covenant_n of_o god_n be_v not_o on_o these_o term_n for_o it_o be_v say_v here_o that_o by_o his_o knowledge_n he_o shall_v justify_v many_o 2._o it_o give_v we_o these_o two_o practical_a uses_n 1._o it_o show_v what_o shall_v be_v our_o intendment_n in_o our_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o be_v that_o we_o may_v be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v by_o it_o even_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o for_o attain_v to_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n if_o this_o be_v over-looked_n and_o neglect_v all_o
other_o fruit_n of_o it_o be_v useless_a it_o will_v avail_v but_o little_a to_o be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n to_o be_v baptise_a and_o to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o lord_n supper_n to_o have_v litural_a knowledge_n of_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n to_o have_v a_o gift_n of_o preach_v or_o of_o prayer_n etc._n etc._n these_o will_v not_o justify_v the_o peculiar_a thing_n aim_v at_o in_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o which_o his_o people_n aim_n at_o and_o have_v to_o rejoice_v in_o be_v justification_n through_o his_o knowledge_n which_o be_v always_o to_o be_v understand_v without_o prejudice_n to_o the_o study_n of_o holiness_n 2._o it_o give_v we_o this_o use_n whoever_o will_v have_v absolution_n before_o god_n will_v know_v that_o this_o be_v the_o very_a thing_n engage_v for_o to_o christ_n and_o his_o intendment_n in_o his_o death_n that_o sinner_n believe_v on_o he_o may_v be_v absolute_o and_o actual_o justify_v by_o he_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o to_o propose_v justification_n to_o they_o but_o that_o absolute_o they_o may_v be_v absolve_v from_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n due_a to_o they_o for_o sin_n and_o now_o may_v i_o not_o ask_v whether_o this_o be_v more_o encourage_v to_o sinner_n to_o have_v christ_n procure_v justification_n only_o conditional_o to_o they_o or_o to_o have_v the_o thing_n absolute_o confer_v upon_o they_o this_o be_v a_o ground_n whereupon_o believe_a sinner_n lift_v up_o their_o head_n confident_o and_o expect_v justification_n through_o his_o righteousness_n it_o be_v this_o that_o be_v promise_v to_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v this_o that_o be_v the_o native_a fruit_n of_o his_o death_n without_o which_o it_o will_v be_v fruitless_a and_o this_o may_v remove_v the_o great_a obstruction_n that_o ready_o a_o sinner_n when_o he_o be_v serious_a see_v lie_v in_o his_o way_n to_o wit_n the_o want_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o not_o be_v absolve_v the_o want_n of_o inherent_a righteousness_n in_o himself_o which_o make_v he_o liable_a to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n when_o he_o see_v upon_o what_o term_n christ_n die_v first_o to_o procure_v a_o righteousness_n to_o they_o that_o want_v righteousness_n and_o 2._o upon_o these_o term_n that_o sinner_n through_o faith_n in_o he_o may_v he_o justify_v and_o fir_v from_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n as_o if_o they_o never_o have_v sin_n themselves_o consider_v this_o to_o be_v his_o intendment_n according_a to_o the_o term_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n what_o have_v they_o or_o what_o can_v they_o have_v to_o scar_n or_o fright_v they_o from_o expect_v the_o fulfil_n of_o this_o promise_n because_o the_o contryvance_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n be_v to_o buy_v justification_n absolute_o and_o not_o the_o possibility_n of_o it_o only_o nor_o to_o buy_v grace_n to_o we_o whereby_o to_o justify_v ourselves_o but_o justification_n itself_o so_o as_o we_o may_v be_v behold_v to_o he_o alone_o for_o it_o again_o 2_o when_o we_o say_v that_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v the_o proper_a result_n of_o christ_n death_n it_o may_v be_v thus_o understand_v that_o the_o righteousness_n whereby_o a_o sinner_n be_v justify_v be_v immediate_o christ_n death_n and_o purchase_n as_o to_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n thereof_o to_o that_o if_o we_o look_v to_o what_o justify_v a_o sinner_n as_o to_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o the_o knit_n of_o these_o two_o together_o he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o do_v hold_v it_o forth_o to_o be_v christ_n death_n and_o purchase_n the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n be_v and_o must_v be_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o a_o lose_a sinner_n be_v justify_v before_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n this_o both_o confirm_v what_o we_o former_o propose_v concern_v this_o doctrine_n and_o also_o show_v that_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v not_o by_o inherent_a holiness_n whence_o come_v it_o i_o pray_v that_o make_v a_o sinner_n acceptable_a before_o god_n it_o be_v not_o from_o habitual_a nor_o actual_a inherent_a grace_n but_o from_o christ_n righteousness_n lay_v hold_v on_o by_o faith_n that_o grip_v and_o adher_v to_o it_o but_o from_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o word_n we_o will_v have_v more_o particular_a occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o this_o where_o these_o two_o be_v knit_v together_o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n therefore_o we_o do_v now_o pass_v it_o the_o object_n of_o this_o benefit_n be_v many_o many_z ordinary_o in_o scripture_n imply_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o great_a number_n and_o so_o it_o show_v the_o extent_n of_o the_o object_n that_o be_v that_o christ_n shall_v purchase_v and_o redeem_v many_o or_o by_o his_o death_n procure_v justification_n to_o many_o 2._o a_o restriction_n and_o thus_o many_o be_v oppose_v to_o all_o and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v there_o shall_v many_o be_v justify_v by_o christ_n death_n but_o not_o all_o and_o therefore_o as_o none_o can_v from_o these_o word_n plead_v for_o a_o universality_n in_o justification_n so_o neither_o can_v they_o in_o redemption_n for_o he_o only_o bear_v their_o iniquity_n who_o by_o his_o knowledge_n he_o justify_v look_v on_o these_o many_o in_o these_o twofold_a consideration_n we_o may_v take_v these_o observation_n from_o it_o 1._o take_v it_o extensive_o observe_v 1._o that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v of_o itself_o able_a to_o justify_v many_o it_o be_v a_o righteousness_n that_o can_v satisfy_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o many_o or_o thus_o that_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n there_o be_v a_o intend_a application_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o purchase_v to_o many_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v many_o who_o shall_v indeed_o partake_v of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o be_v justify_v by_o it_o it_o be_v not_o one_o or_o two_o or_o a_o thousand_o but_o as_o it_o be_v intend_v to_o justify_v many_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v actual_o apply_v to_o many_o for_o their_o justification_n 3._o compare_v the_o former_a word_n he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o these_o word_n by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o observe_v that_o christ_n be_v not_o satisfy_v for_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n except_o many_o be_v justify_v or_o thus_o it_o be_v christ_n satisfaction_n how_o many_o there_o be_v that_o make_v use_v of_o he_o and_o that_o by_o make_v use_n of_o he_o come_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o he_o as_o afterward_o we_o will_v see_v these_o many_o be_v all_o these_o that_o believe_v all_o these_o that_o have_v this_o true_a and_o save_a knowledge_n of_o he_o and_o do_v right_o acknowledge_v he_o the_o make_v out_o of_o one_o of_o these_o doctrine_n will_v make_v they_o all_o out_o that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v able_a to_o justify_v many_o that_o many_o shall_v be_v justify_v by_o it_o and_o that_o it_o be_v his_o satisfaction_n and_o delight_n that_o many_o be_v justify_v and_o get_v this_o good_a of_o it_o it_o be_v say_v matth._n 20.28_o that_o he_o come_v to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n a_o ransom_n for_o many_o and_o rom._n 5.15_o that_o the_o gift_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v by_o one_o man_n jesus_n christ_n have_v abound_v unto_o many_o and_o v._o 19_o as_o by_o one_o man_n disobedience_n many_o be_v make_v sinner_n so_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o one_o shalâ—_n many_o be_v make_v righteous_a let_v but_o these_o four_o thing_n be_v put_v together_o and_o consider_v and_o it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o there_o be_v no_o just_a ground_n to_o quarrel_v these_o doctrine_n 1._o the_o native_a worth_n and_o intrinsic_a value_n that_o be_v in_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v the_o blood_n of_o god_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v god_n it_o be_v a_o offer_v that_o flow_v from_o a_o willing_a and_o cheerful_a giver_n which_o make_v it_o the_o more_o acceptable_a he_o be_v content_a with_o delight_n to_o pay_v the_o price_n there_o can_v be_v a_o limit_v or_o bound_v of_o this_o worth_a and_o value_n because_o there_o can_v be_v any_o bound_a or_o limit_v of_o the_o person_n that_o give_v the_o value_n to_o it_o if_o it_o be_v consider_v in_o itself_o 2._o consider_v the_o freeness_n of_o the_o offer_n which_o take_v in_o many_o our_o lord_n communicat_o very_o free_o what_o he_o have_v buy_v very_o dear_a and_o it_o be_v do_v with_o respect_n to_o his_o take_n in_o of_o many_o to_o take_v away_o all_o exception_n from_o the_o poor_a and_o needy_a and_o from_o they_o that_o want_v money_n 3._o as_o the_o term_n be_v
