¶_o a_o brief_a treatise_n against_o certain_a error_n of_o the_o romish_a church_n very_o plain_o notable_o and_o pleasant_o confute_v the_o same_o by_o scripture_n and_o ancient_a writer_n compile_v by_o gregory_n scot._n 1570_o peruse_v &_o lisence_v according_a to_o the_o queen_n majesty_n injunction_n 1574._o ¶_o imprint_v at_o london_n by_o john_n awdeley_n ¶_o the_o printer_n to_o the_o christian_a reader_n though_o volume_n great_a and_o learned_a work_n of_o famous_a man_n hereof_o be_v rife_o whereby_o both_o papist_n jew_n and_o turk_n have_v deadly_a wound_n for_o all_o their_o strife_n and_o though_o these_o sect_n have_v not_o such_o life_n in_o these_o our_o day_n as_o late_o they_o have_v yet_o gentle_a reader_n take_v in_o brief_a this_o treatise_n against_o these_o error_n bad_a which_o for_o the_o truth_n in_o plain_a discourse_n and_o pleasant_a verse_n by_o sense_n well_o try_v of_o such_o as_o be_v learned_a and_o wise_a i_o think_v therefore_o not_o it_o to_o hide_v but_o publish_v it_o to_o daunt_v the_o pride_n of_o they_o that_o still_o will_v hold_v the_o same_o against_o god_n and_o truth_n and_o therein_o bide_v regard_v neither_o truth_n nor_o shame_n but_o chief_o for_o the_o simple_a sort_n this_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o form_n most_o plain_a in_o pleasant_a wise_n and_o order_v short_a that_o they_o may_v view_v with_o lesser_a pain_n and_o in_o their_o mind_n the_o same_o contain_v as_o for_o the_o learned_a though_o they_o know_v these_o error_n all_o and_o they_o refrain_v for_o other_o skill_n do_v this_o allow_v the_o author_n to_o i_o as_o unknown_a to_o thou_o good_a reader_n i_o commend_v this_o work_n out_o set_v and_o now_o forth_o blow_v shall_v show_v forth_o that_o he_o do_v intend_v which_o be_v i_o hope_v some_o folk_n to_o mend_v who_o wander_v in_o these_o error_n ill_a thy_o favour_n then_o to_o he_o extend_v accept_n this_o as_o his_o good_a will_n and_o praise_v thou_o god_n for_o this_o his_o light_n which_o in_o our_o day_n do_v now_o so_o shine_v who_o open_v have_v the_o mind_n and_o sight_n of_o many_o learned_a for_o profit_v thy_o to_o god_n alone_o therefore_o resign_v these_o praise_n due_a and_o not_o to_o man_n yet_o in_o thy_o prayer_n have_v in_o mind_n their_o good_a estate_n and_o thank_v god_n then_o but_o chief_o pray_v thou_o for_o those_o state_n by_o who_o good_a mean_n this_o light_n we_o joy_v as_o namely_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n which_o keep_v we_o from_o all_o annoy_n the_o pastor_n eke_o for_o they_o do_v pray_v and_o frame_v thy_o life_n in_o virtue_n trace_v in_o humble_a wise_n they_o love_n and_o obey_v so_o shall_v thou_o quit_v their_o laborous_a case_n finis_fw-la ¶_o a_o brief_a treatise_n against_o certain_a error_n of_o the_o romish_a church_n how_o be_v the_o faithful_a city_n change_v e_o from_o that_o it_o be_v before_o where_o righteousness_n sometime_o do_v sit_v now_o bloodshed_n reign_v more_o rome_n once_o it_o have_v renown_v praise_n e._n for_o truth_n therein_o do_v dwell_v a_o faithful_a city_n once_o it_o be_v and_o other_o do_v excel_v but_o now_o ungodliness_n do_v reign_v syluarum_fw-la where_o faith_n do_v then_o abound_v their_o wicked_a and_o most_o loathsome_a life_n throughout_o the_o world_n do_v sound_a rome_n be_v a_o cage_n of_o bird_n unclean_a a_o a_o sink_n of_o filthy_a sin_n few_o error_n have_v the_o church_n infect_v that_o do_v not_o there_o begin_v from_o thence_o they_o spread_v over_o the_o earth_n what_o place_n can_v once_o be_v find_v b_o that_o free_o be_v from_o infection_n in_o europe_n none_o be_v find_v where_o canker_n once_o have_v take_v root_n it_o creep_v over_o all_o herein_o that_o wicked_a mother_n church_n we_o may_v to_o witness_n call_v which_o once_o decline_v from_o the_o truth_n and_o from_o the_o perfect_a way_n have_v ever_o since_o more_o error_n breed_v and_o further_o go_v astray_o of_o these_o error_n my_o purpose_n be_v here_o brief_o to_o entreat_v but_o not_o of_o all_o for_o that_o be_v much_o the_o number_n be_v so_o great_a i_o mean_v of_o such_o as_o you_o yourselves_o by_o who_o mayntaynd_v they_o be_v a_o may_v soon_o perceive_v so_o plain_a they_o be_v if_o eye_n you_o have_v to_o see_v this_o serve_v for_o the_o ignorant_a who_o you_o do_v most_o infect_a the_o learned_a know_v your_o error_n well_o and_o have_v they_o all_o detect_v b_o three_o witness_n confirm_v a_o truth_n yet_o more_o that_o witness_n bear_v thereby_o you_o be_v more_o guilty_a find_v your_o error_n more_o appear_v the_o error_n be_v so_o catholic_a in_o your_o religion_n that_o order_n there_o be_v none_o at_o all_o but_o great_a confusion_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o orderless_a herein_o i_o do_v observe_v although_o to_o some_o it_o be_v offence_n less_o blame_v it_o do_v deserve_v therefore_o my_o entry_n where_o to_o make_v my_o mind_n be_v much_o in_o doubt_n such_o heap_n of_o error_n do_v i_o see_v your_o romish_a church_n throughout_o ¶_o against_o image_n and_o idolatry_n but_o worship_v of_o image_n a_o gross_a and_o grievous_a sin_n because_o it_o be_v a_o custom_n old_a with_o it_o i_o will_v begin_v in_o thing_n against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o that_o you_o do_v offend_v then_o plead_v you_o custom_n common_o your_o error_n to_o defend_v but_o yet_o such_o custom_n here_o you_o have_v you_o may_v put_v in_o your_o plea_n why_o shall_v it_o not_o take_v place_n it_o be_v of_o such_o antiquity_n 10_o wellnigh_o for_o age_n it_o rot_v be_v your_o idol_n show_v the_o same_o the_o old_a heathen_a they_o use_v it_o long_o from_o thence_o this_o custom_n come_v but_o chief_o how_o they_o first_o begin_v c_o and_o since_o have_v take_v root_n although_o yet_o some_o be_v long_o before_o this_o brief_o shall_v you_o note_v b_o the_o father_n mourn_v for_o the_o death_n of_o his_o belove_a son_n a_o image_n to_o remember_v he_o he_o wild_a to_o make_v anon_o in_o time_n this_o custom_n so_o prevail_v incrrease_v more_o and_o more_o that_o rite_n and_o offering_n be_v devise_v the_o image_n to_o adore_v and_o tyrant_n do_v by_o cruel_a law_n compel_v man_n so_o to_o do_v the_o beauty_n of_o the_o cunning_a work_n do_v much_o entice_v thereto_o though_o father_n only_o for_o his_o son_n this_o image_n do_v devise_v of_o small_a beginning_n yet_o we_o see_v great_a mischief_n may_v arise_v but_o though_o idolatry_n among_o the_o heathen_a thus_o do_v reign_v yet_o of_o long_a time_n in_o christ_n his_o church_n no_o place_n it_o do_v obtain_v until_o next_o after_o christ_n his_o death_n four_o hundred_o year_n be_v pass_v no_o image_n than_o be_v worship_v nor_o yet_o in_o church_n place_v but_o when_o the_o apostle_n of_o the_o lord_n 31_o and_o their_o disciple_n true_a be_v take_v hence_o and_o few_o be_v leave_v their_o preach_n to_o renew_v the_o church_n begin_v then_o to_o decline_v true_a knowledge_n do_v decay_v then_o image_n creep_v in_o withal_o and_o lead_v they_o more_o astray_o but_o as_o i_o say_v these_o idol_n come_v from_o gentile_n that_o do_v use_v the_o image_n of_o worthy_a man_n b_o such_o as_o themselves_o do_v choose_v of_o who_o some_o memory_n to_o keep_v by_o error_n so_o deceive_v they_o honour_v their_o image_n for_o benefit_n receive_v these_o heathen_a convert_n unto_o christ_n 14._o like_o error_n keep_v still_o they_o cause_v image_n to_o make_v in_o sign_n of_o their_o good_a will_n of_o christ_n of_o paul_n and_o other_o more_o and_o keep_v they_o reverent_o thus_o first_o amongst_o the_o christian_n begin_v idolatry_n nothing_o in_o scripture_n be_v forbid_v so_o much_o as_o image_n e._n yet_o to_o no_o sin_n more_o prone_a we_o be_v then_o to_o such_o wickedness_n but_o most_o ungodly_a be_v this_o work_n whereby_o you_o will_v express_v the_o live_a god_n in_o outward_a form_n of_o grave_a image_n moses_n give_v charge_n hereof_o this_o evil_n do_v foresee_v c_o thou_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n he_o say_v no_o image_n do_v thou_o see_v take_v heed_n therefore_o unto_o thy_o soul_n always_o remember_v this_o no_o image_n make_v unto_o thyself_o d._n a_o damn_a thing_n it_o be_v the_o godhead_n be_v not_o like_a to_o gold_n nor_o like_v to_o silver_n bright_a ●_o it_o be_v not_o like_a to_o wood_n or_o stone_n nor_o subject_n to_o the_o sight_n d_o who_o have_v see_v god_n at_o any_o time_n b._n the_o workman_n do_v but_o guess_v when_o like_o a_o old_a man_n he_o he_o make_v of_o bigness_n more_o or_o less_o belike_o his_o year_n they_o now_o decay_v ●_o who_o can_v be_v always_o young_a his_o old_a gray_a beard_n do_v seem_v to_o show_v he_o can_v sure_o live_v long_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o immortal_a god_n c._n who_o shape_n be_v never_o see_v to_o image_n of_o
