why_o because_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o none_o of_o the_o elect_a shall_v perish_v or_o be_v condemn_v answ_n true_a not_o executive_o but_o mr._n eyre_n know_v we_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o perish_v and_o condemnation_n in_o this_o debate_n and_o that_o by_o condemnation_n we_o mean_v not_o the_o execution_n of_o punishment_n or_o wrath_n but_o a_o legal_a obligation_n to_o the_o suffering_n of_o it_o and_o though_o god_n do_v purpose_n that_o the_o elect_v shall_v not_o perish_v or_o be_v condemn_v executive_o &_o quoad_fw-la eventum_fw-la yet_o shall_v mr._n eyre_n prove_v that_o he_o purpose_v that_o the_o elect_v shall_v not_o stand_v oblige_v equal_o with_o other_o sinner_n for_o some_o time_n to_o the_o suffering_n of_o wrath_n this_o if_o he_o prove_v i_o will_v yield_v the_o cause_n the_o purpose_n of_o god_n in_o itself_o make_v no_o difference_n between_o man_n who_o cause_n be_v the_o same_o before_o the_o just_a and_o be_v say_v mr._n eyre_n he_o that_o never_o believe_v as_o chap._n 8._o 24._o if_o you_o believe_v not_o i._n e._n not_o at_o all_o you_o shall_v die_v in_o your_o sin_n our_o saviour_n have_v no_o intent_n at_o all_o to_o show_v the_o state_n of_o the_o elect_a before_o believe_v but_o the_o certain_a and_o inevitable_a misery_n of_o they_o that_o believe_v not_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n that_o have_v pass_v upon_o they_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o answer_n consent_v well_o enough_o with_o that_o explication_n of_o the_o text_n which_o i_o give_v in_o my_o sermon_n rep._n first_o for_o that_o which_o be_v pretend_v to_o be_v our_o lord_n intent_n in_o these_o word_n let_v i_o entreat_v thou_o reader_n to_o peruse_v and_o ponder_v the_o text_n for_o i_o think_v thou_o shall_v hardly_o meet_v with_o the_o like_a abuse_n of_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n in_o any_o author_n that_o acknowledge_v the_o divinity_n of_o scripture_n ver_fw-la 14._o as_o the_o world_n and_o man_n have_v love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_v now_o what_o say_v mr._n eyre_n why_o he_o will_v have_v we_o believe_v that_o the_o lord_n intention_n be_v quite_o against_o his_o expression_n and_o that_o he_o be_v come_v to_o testify_v to_o the_o world_n that_o their_o misery_n be_v certain_a and_o inevitable_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n that_o have_v pass_v upon_o they_o it_o be_v time_n to_o burn_v our_o bibles_n if_o such_o gloss_n as_o these_o must_v be_v receive_v for_o truth_n 2._o if_o the_o misery_n of_o those_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v inevitable_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n how_o be_v this_o to_o be_v understand_v either_o that_o the_o law_n pass_v sentence_n upon_o they_o as_o unbeliever_n but_o this_o i_o suppose_v be_v too_o unreasonable_a to_o be_v affirm_v or_o that_o the_o same_o man_n who_o afterward_o prove_v unbeliever_n be_v before_o sentence_v by_o the_o law_n to_o certain_a and_o unavoidable_a misery_n but_o then_o their_o unbelief_n contribute_v nothing_o to_o make_v their_o misery_n unavoidable_a whereas_o our_o lord_n charge_v the_o unavoidablenesse_n of_o misery_n upon_o wilful_a unbelief_n ver_fw-la 19_o this_o be_v the_o condemnation_n not_o that_o man_n be_v in_o darkness_n but_o that_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o man_n have_v love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_v be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o man_n may_v do_v well_o enough_o notwithstanding_o all_o that_o the_o law_n have_v do_v against_o they_o ergo_fw-la misery_n be_v not_o make_v certain_a and_o inevitable_a to_o any_o by_o the_o law_n before_o unbelief_n be_v add_v 3._o mr._n eyre_n tell_v we_o but_o now_o that_o the_o law_n condemn_v all_o man_n of_o life_n ver_fw-la 19_o this_o be_v the_o condemnation_n etc._n etc._n for_o christ_n can_v not_o find_v man_n condemn_v for_o a_o final_a reject_v of_o he_o till_o he_o have_v be_v preach_v and_o tender_v to_o they_o ergo_fw-la they_o that_o believe_v not_o ver_fw-la 18._o be_v unbeliever_n in_o general_n 4._o the_o condemnation_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v
sufficient_a cause_n of_o condemnation_n though_o he_o be_v not_o actual_o condemn_v for_o want_v of_o the_o concurrence_n of_o some_o other_o cause_n but_o what_o that_o actual_a condemnation_n be_v which_o be_v hereby_o intend_v to_o be_v exclude_v we_o must_v far_o inquire_v condemnation_n which_o we_o be_v force_v often_o to_o observe_v signify_v either_o the_o sinner_n obligation_n to_o punishment_n or_o the_o execution_n of_o punishment_n in_o the_o former_a sense_n he_o be_v condemn_v who_o by_o the_o law_n be_v guilty_a of_o death_n in_o the_o latter_a sense_n he_o who_o be_v from_o the_o former_a the_o meaning_n be_v this_o that_o all_o the_o world_n the_o elect_a and_o all_o have_v wrought_v that_o evil_n which_o be_v most_o sufficient_a to_o work_v the_o forfeiture_n of_o their_o right_n to_o life_n and_o make_v they_o liable_a to_o eternal_a death_n if_o there_o be_v any_o law_n in_o force_n against_o they_o if_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n mr._n eyre_n will_v have_v the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o when_o he_o say_v all_o the_o world_n be_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n mark_v what_o follow_v 1._o then_o the_o law_n neither_o do_v nor_o ever_o do_v condemn_v any_o man_n live_v for_o man_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v damnable_a and_o but_o damnable_a not_o actual_o condemn_v for_o want_v of_o a_o law_n in_o source_n to_o condemn_v they_o that_o be_v to_o hold_v they_o under_o a_o obligation_n to_o punishment_n the_o law_n do_v but_o show_v its_o tooth_n pardon_v the_o expression_n reader_n but_o it_o neither_o do_v nor_o ever_o do_v bite_v any_o man_n no_o not_o the_o most_o presumptuous_a transgressor_n of_o it_o though_o transgressor_n be_v as_o fit_a object_n as_o can_v be_v for_o the_o law_n to_o take_v hold_n of_o if_o it_o have_v power_n so_o to_o do_v hence_o second_o i_o will_v ask_v whether_o ever_o god_n do_v condemn_v any_o man_n if_o he_o do_v by_o what_o act_n not_o by_o the_o law_n that_o show_v indeed_o who_o be_v damnable_a in_o themselves_o not_o who_o be_v condemn_v of_o god_n i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o some_o be_v condemn_v by_o the_o eternal_a act_n of_o reprobation_n â—ut_v i_o leave_v it_o to_o mr._n eyre_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o name_n or_o nature_n of_o condemnation_n can_v agree_v to_o that_o act_n according_a to_o scripture_n which_o if_o he_o can_v prove_v as_o sure_o enough_o he_o can_v nor_o all_o the_o man_n on_o earth_n it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o the_o condemnation_n of_o any_o man_n according_a to_o scripture_n against_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o text_n i_o can_v add_v much_o more_o if_o i_o can_v persuade_v myself_o to_o think_v that_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o help_n of_o any_o man_n but_o it_o may_v be_v this_o damnability_n be_v oppose_v to_o damnation_n execute_v 19_o §._o 19_o and_o then_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o the_o law_n do_v not_o show_v who_o god_n damn_v that_o be_v punish_v with_o damnation_n but_o who_o be_v damnable_a or_o punishable_a in_o themselves_o if_o god_n shall_v try_v and_o judge_v they_o according_a to_o the_o law_n but_o 1._o this_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n it_o be_v no_o part_n of_o my_o undertake_n to_o prove_v that_o every_o one_o who_o at_o present_a be_v a_o unbeliever_n be_v damn_v as_o that_o word_n note_v the_o execution_n of_o damnation_n or_o wrath_n actual_o inflict_v but_o that_o he_o be_v condemn_v that_o be_v under_o a_o legal_a obligation_n to_o punishment_n till_o some_o gracious_a act_n of_o god_n discharge_v he_o when_o therefore_o mr._n eyre_n oppose_v that_o man_n be_v not_o condemn_v by_o the_o law_n but_o damnable_a he_o fight_v with_o a_o shadow_n for_o he_o that_o be_v damnable_a executive_o be_v condemn_v legal_o which_o be_v that_o i_o be_o prove_v for_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o judgement_n to_o execute_v law_n and_o to_o give_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o what_o be_v due_a to_o he_o by_o law_n if_o then_o upon_o supposition_n that_o man_n be_v to_o be_v try_v and_o judge_v by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n they_o will_v be_v find_v damnable_a it_o must_v be_v also_o suppose_v that_o they_o be_v before_o oblige_v by_o law_n to_o the_o suffering_n of_o damnation_n 2._o otherwise_o the_o law_n be_v but_o the_o carcase_n of_o a_o law_n and_o call_v a_o law_n equivocal_o as_o we_o call_v a_o dead_a man_n a_o man_n for_o example_n there_o be_v a_o law_n in_o israel_n that_o whosoever_o shall_v not_o humble_v himself_o upon_o the_o day_n of_o expiation_n shall_v be_v cut_v off_o leu._n 16._o which_o law_n be_v now_o abrogate_a nevertheless_o it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v that_o if_o a_o jew_n who_o now_o keep_v not_o that_o day_n be_v to_o be_v try_v and_o judge_v by_o that_o law_n he_o will_v be_v find_v punishable_a if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o law_n be_v now_o abrogate_a and_o so_o no_o man_n incur_v the_o penalty_n upon_o the_o nonobservance_n of_o it_o it_o be_v most_o true_a yet_o may_v he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v punishable_a by_o it_o in_o sensu_fw-la diviso_fw-la in_o the_o very_a same_o sense_n in_o which_o mr._n eyre_n allow_v sinner_n to_o be_v damnable_a by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n namely_o upon_o supposition_n it_o be_v in_o force_n to_o make_v the_o penalty_n due_a and_o sinner_n be_v to_o be_v try_v and_o judge_v by_o it_o 3._o and_o be_v it_o not_o worth_a the_o while_n for_o the_o lord_n jesus_n to_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n to_o redeem_v sinner_n from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o at_o no_o easy_a a_o rate_n then_o by_o be_v make_v a_o curse_n for_o they_o when_o the_o law_n never_o curse_v or_o condemn_v any_o man_n but_o only_o show_v who_o be_v damnable_a in_o themselves_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o the_o law_n from_o which_o way_n of_o judgement_n the_o elect_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v secure_v by_o a_o antecedent_n act_n of_o god_n sect_n v._o my_o second_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o condemnation_n mention_v 19_o §._o 19_o john_n 3._o 18._o can_v be_v mean_v mere_o of_o condemnation_n in_o conscience_n be_v this_o the_o condemnation_n of_o a_o unbeliever_n conscience_n be_v either_o true_a or_o false_a if_o true_a than_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o speak_v as_o the_o thing_n be_v and_o so_o god_n condemn_v as_o well_o as_o the_o conscience_n if_o false_a etc._n etc._n mr._n eyre_n answer_v there_o be_v a_o threefold_a act_n of_o conscience_n about_o sin_n 1._o when_o it_o witness_v to_o we_o about_o the_o desert_n of_o sin_n 2._o when_o it_o witness_v to_o we_o concern_v the_o act_n of_o sin_n 3._o when_o it_o witness_v to_o we_o concern_v our_o final_a state_n and_o condition_n before_o god_n now_o if_o conscience_n bear_v witness_n to_o a_o man_n concern_v what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o what_o be_v his_o desert_n in_o so_o do_v it_o do_v but_o its_o duty_n but_o if_o it_o tell_v a_o man_n that_o for_o the_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v do_v he_o be_v a_o damn_a creature_n and_o must_v perish_v everlasting_o such_o a_o conscience_n be_v both_o penal_o and_o sinful_o evil_a rep._n the_o argument_n be_v whole_o untouched_a for_o the_o question_n be_v not_o whether_o a_o unbeliever_n conscience_n condemn_v he_o true_o in_o reference_n to_o his_o final_a estate_n but_o whether_o it_o condemn_v he_o true_o in_o reference_n to_o his_o present_a state_n if_o it_o tell_v he_o that_o at_o present_a he_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n do_v it_o speak_v true_a or_o false_a herein_o mr._n eyre_n will_v not_o answer_v i_o but_o say_v only_o that_o if_o it_o tell_v he_o his_o case_n be_v desperate_a and_o without_o hope_n it_o speak_v false_a i_o need_v not_o tell_v mr._n eyre_n that_o his_o answer_n be_v impertinent_a i_o be_o persuade_v he_o know_v it_o well_o enough_o conscience_n may_v tell_v a_o unbeliever_n that_o he_o be_v condemn_v and_o herein_o it_o speak_v true_a though_o it_o do_v not_o tell_v he_o that_o there_o be_v no_o way_n of_o come_v out_o of_o this_o state_n of_o condemnation_n which_o be_v false_a 2._o the_o two_o former_a answer_n also_o be_v not_o much_o to_o purpose_n for_o to_o witness_v concern_v the_o act_n and_o desert_n of_o sin_n be_v as_o proper_a to_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o believer_n as_o of_o a_o unbeliever_n whereas_o our_o question_n be_v only_o concern_v the_o unbeliever_n conscience_n and_o if_o this_o be_v the_o whole_a of_o what_o conscience_n can_v just_o charge_v upon_o a_o unbeliever_n then_o be_v the_o
brazen_a serpent_n else_o they_o can_v not_o have_v see_v it_o so_o they_o that_o look_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n ay_o e._n believe_v in_o he_o be_v spiritual_o alive_a or_o else_o they_o can_v not_o put_v forth_o such_o a_o vital_a act_n rep._n but_o wherein_o do_v this_o make_v against_o i_o the_o most_o that_o follow_v from_o hence_o be_v either_o that_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n be_v before_o the_o act_n as_o the_o faculty_n of_o sight_n before_o the_o operation_n of_o it_o which_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o question_n between_o mr._n eyre_n and_o i_o or_o that_o a_o man_n be_v quicken_v internal_o by_o faith_n before_o he_o be_v quicken_v moral_o by_o justification_n and_o pardon_n even_o as_o they_o put_v forth_o the_o vital_a act_n of_o see_v before_o they_o receive_v that_o heal_n which_o prevent_v their_o approach_a death_n which_o be_v the_o very_a thing_n i_o be_o prove_v 2._o but_o in_o every_o similitude_n there_o be_v some_o dissimilitude_n and_o if_o mr._n eyre_n will_v instance_n in_o thing_n that_o do_v not_o come_v into_o the_o comparison_n he_o may_v as_o well_o infer_v that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o natural_a power_n because_o their_o look_v to_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n which_o represent_a faith_n be_v so_o i_o say_v therefore_o that_o they_o that_o be_v sting_v with_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n though_o they_o be_v not_o dead_a as_o to_o the_o utmost_a and_o last_o act_n of_o death_n which_o consist_v in_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o body_n yet_o they_o be_v dead_a in_o effect_n and_o as_o much_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o type_n and_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o comparison_n require_v as_o have_v receive_v their_o death_n wound_n which_o will_v soon_o have_v prevail_v over_o the_o remainder_n of_o their_o life_n if_o it_o have_v not_o be_v prevent_v by_o look_v up_o to_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n and_o therefore_o of_o he_o that_o look_v on_o the_o serpent_n of_o brass_n it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o live_v numb_a 21._o 9_o that_o be_v say_v mr._n eyre_n he_o have_v ease_n from_o his_o anguish_n and_o 4._o §._o 4._o so_o by_o look_v up_o to_o christ_n by_o faith_n we_o find_v ease_n and_o rest_n to_o our_o weary_a soul_n a_o man_n be_v say_v to_o live_v when_o he_o live_v comfortable_o and_o happy_o rep._n which_o be_v neither_o true_a in_o the_o proposition_n nor_o reddition_n of_o the_o comparison_n not_o in_o the_o first_o for_o in_o the_o type_n the_o opposition_n be_v not_o between_o ease_n and_o pain_n but_o between_o life_n and_o death_n numb_a 21._o 6._o the_o fiery_a serpent_n
