3.24_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n fit_a for_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o be_v first_o discipline_v and_o school_v in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n commandment_n therefore_o be_v the_o law_n say_v to_o be_v a_o schoolmaster_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o christ_n by_o faith_n because_o it_o do_v humble_v we_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o see_v the_o purpose_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n it_o behove_v all_o man_n to_o respect_v the_o gospel_n as_o they_o will_v their_o salvation_n and_o labour_n by_o all_o mean_n not_o only_o to_o advance_v the_o prosperity_n thereof_o but_o also_o to_o resist_v the_o cause_n that_o may_v occasion_v the_o slander_n or_o disgrace_n of_o that_o sacred_a word_n and_o profession_n five_o see_v the_o matter_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o story_n of_o the_o word_n and_o work_n of_o jesus_n christ_n our_o saviour_n while_o he_o be_v upon_o earth_n it_o doâ—h_v bind_v every_o man_n conscience_n to_o have_v a_o reverend_a and_o confident_a opinion_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o and_o that_o all_o man_n labour_v by_o all_o convenient_a mean_n to_o maintain_v the_o memory_n and_o reputation_n of_o those_o sacred_a writing_n the_o which_o be_v only_o able_a to_o guide_v we_o without_o error_n in_o the_o right_a way_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o see_v that_o god_n of_o his_o own_o favour_n without_o any_o deserâ—_n of_o we_o which_o be_v fall_v from_o he_o enter_v this_o covenant_n of_o grace_n bind_v himself_o in_o the_o surety_n of_o his_o most_o sacred_a word_n to_o give_v salvation_n upon_o the_o easy_a condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o all_o those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o sincerity_n thereof_o through_o the_o merit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n who_o do_v please_v to_o appoint_v himself_o to_o take_v our_o sin_n upon_o he_o and_o to_o descend_v his_o majesty_n in_o great_a humility_n to_o establish_v our_o salvation_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o holy_a work_n this_o shall_v move_v all_o man_n to_o give_v thanks_o for_o so_o great_a benefit_n and_o to_o live_v in_o godly_a conversation_n six_o see_v the_o officer_n appoint_v and_o choose_v by_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o for_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o after_o they_o the_o godly_a and_o reverend_a martyr_n in_o the_o primitive_a church_n by_o who_o diligence_n the_o gospel_n spread_v itself_o over_o all_o the_o know_a world_n this_o do_v admonish_v all_o they_o that_o either_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o that_o have_v power_n to_o make_v they_o what_o choice_n and_o care_n be_v to_o be_v have_v of_o their_o uprightness_n and_o godly_a conversation_n and_o what_o
day_n of_o hope_n but_o to_o the_o wicked_a their_o day_n of_o fear_n death_n then_o in_o these_o divers_a respect_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n have_v a_o sting_n and_o yet_o can_v hurt_v be_v dead_a and_o yet_o live_v and_o by_o open_v the_o gate_n of_o temporary_a death_n do_v admit_v the_o entrance_n either_o into_o eternal_a life_n or_o eternal_a death_n the_o one_o be_v the_o most_o happy_a condition_n of_o god_n choose_v the_o other_o the_o most_o miserable_a state_n of_o the_o reprobate_n and_o damn_a for_o as_o this_o life_n wherein_o we_o breathe_v be_v but_o a_o sacrament_n or_o little_a resemblance_n of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v so_o the_o terror_n of_o a_o temporary_a death_n have_v no_o proportion_n with_o the_o torment_n of_o everlasting_a death_n wherein_o both_o the_o body_n and_o the_o soul_n shall_v suffer_v such_o affliction_n as_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o imagination_n infinite_a in_o measure_n infinite_a in_o manner_n infinite_a in_o time_n to_o undertake_v to_o report_v of_o heaven_n and_o hell_n salvation_n and_o damnation_n otherwise_o then_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o this_o book_n be_v not_o in_o my_o purpose_n or_o power_n to_o describe_v they_o but_o this_o we_o may_v know_v that_o both_o be_v infinite_a heaven_n be_v infinite_a in_o time_n and_o happiness_n and_o hell_n be_v infinite_a in_o time_n and_o torment_n the_o one_o as_o god_n resemblance_n be_v infinite_a good_a the_o other_o as_o the_o devil_n be_v infinite_a evil_n the_o one_o be_v hope_v for_o the_o other_o fear_v to_o which_o all_o mankind_n must_v make_v their_o resort_n and_o by_o the_o gate_n of_o death_n pass_v their_o temporal_a life_n to_o one_o of_o these_o to_o eternity_n see_v our_o sin_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o death_n and_o from_o ourselves_o have_v his_o first_o original_n it_o ought_v to_o humble_v all_o man_n in_o their_o own_o estimation_n and_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a corruption_n of_o our_o nature_n which_o make_v we_o powerful_a only_o in_o do_v evil_a and_o in_o produce_v such_o bad_a effect_n as_o cause_v our_o own_o destruction_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o may_v correct_v their_o proud_a opinion_n that_o vain_o arrogate_v such_o power_n unto_o themselves_o as_o to_o be_v the_o mean_n in_o cause_n of_o their_o own_o salvation_n fond_o and_o false_o think_v that_o their_o eye_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o blind_a in_o spiritual_a judgement_n but_o imagine_v to_o have_v in_o themselves_o that_o virtue_n and_o power_n which_o they_o only_o have_v by_o imagination_n for_o if_o adam_n by_o his_o sin_n do_v produce_v and_o give_v life_n to_o such_o a_o monster_n by_o birth_n as_o death_n be_v what_o expectation_n then_o can_v be_v have_v of_o our_o weak_a ability_n who_o be_v in_o all_o respect_n but_o sin_n adam_n far_a inferior_n and_o by_o much_o less_o able_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o spiritual_a duty_n second_o see_v death_n have_v universal_a power_n over_o all_o flesh_n and_o see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o partiality_n in_o the_o execution_n of_o this_o office_n no_o dispense_n of_o favour_n no_o lengthen_v of_o time_n but_o come_v certain_o but_o not_o certain_o when_v this_o may_v advise_v all_o man_n to_o godly_a action_n and_o to_o live_v to_o day_n as_o if_o they_o be_v to_o die_v to_o morrow_n lest_o otherwise_o death_n come_v unexpected_a and_o so_o prevent_v their_o good_a determination_n which_o be_v only_o determine_v and_o not_o do_v avail_v we_o to_o no_o other_o end_n but_o grief_n and_o unprofitable_a repentance_n again_o see_v all_o must_v die_v and_o be_v reduce_v again_o to_o earth_n 13.18_o jere._n 13.18_o this_o shall_v control_v the_o proud_a ambitious_a nature_n of_o man_n who_o in_o this_o life_n insult_v over_o man_n of_o inferior_a state_n and_o dignify_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o estimation_n as_o if_o god_n have_v not_o make_v they_o of_o earth_n or_o that_o the_o grave_n will_v not_o humble_v they_o and_o make_v they_o earth_n again_o these_o man_n that_o value_v themselves_o rich_a by_o have_v the_o beggarly_a gift_n of_o fortune_n and_o despise_v the_o most_o rich_a treasure_n of_o grace_n 4.2_o jere._n 4.2_o where_o it_o live_v in_o the_o banishment_n of_o poor_a fortune_n these_o that_o despise_v death_n most_o when_o they_o live_v note_n p._n l._n 34.20_o note_n and_o fear_v he_o most_o when_o they_o die_v be_v here_o admonish_v to_o reform_v this_o insolent_a behaviour_n and_o to_o remember_v themselves_o that_o how_o proud_a soever_o they_o be_v yet_o they_o must_v be_v humble_v in_o the_o grave_n and_o that_o the_o worm_n and_o corruption_n will_v destroy_v their_o pride_n and_o in_o despite_n of_o greatness_n make_v they_o inferior_a to_o the_o mean_a beggar_n on_o earth_n and_o yet_o can_v death_n heap_v a_o great_a calamity_n upon_o they_o and_o open_a unto_o they_o the_o passage_n to_o everlasting_a death_n and_o afflict_v they_o with_o the_o damn_a in_o torment_n perpetual_a and_o infinite_a three_o see_v that_o christ_n by_o death_n have_v slay_v death_n and_o have_v take_v his_o hurtful_a sting_n from_o he_o whereby_o he_o may_v be_v hurtful_a to_o god_n elect_n it_o do_v admonish_v a_o zealous_a duty_n of_o thankfulness_n in_o they_o in_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n their_o saviour_n by_o who_o mean_n death_n be_v no_o death_n to_o they_o but_o rather_o life_n and_o advantage_n by_o who_o they_o have_v the_o door_n open_v to_o everlasting_a salvation_n for_o so_o ought_v all_o man_n to_o understand_v of_o death_n note_n note_n as_o the_o common_a jailor_n of_o all_o flesh_n the_o world_n be_v the_o prison_n wherein_o we_o be_v shut_v death_n when_o he_o open_v the_o door_n deliver_v from_o prison_n lead_v the_o party_n deliver_v either_o to_o liberty_n or_o judgement_n for_o so_o be_v all_o that_o die_v transport_v from_o earth_n either_o to_o heaven_n which_o be_v their_o liberty_n or_o to_o hell_n the_o place_n of_o execution_n death_n then_o be_v that_o one_o key_n that_o open_v the_o double_a passage_n the_o one_o to_o heaven_n the_o other_o to_o hell_n the_o one_o lead_v to_o salvation_n the_o other_o to_o damnation_n last_o see_v that_o death_n be_v a_o repose_n and_o rest_n from_o earthly_a labour_n it_o ought_v to_o sweeten_v the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o life_n with_o hopeful_a confidence_n alacrity_n and_o spiritual_a comfort_n notwithstanding_o most_o man_n do_v repute_v the_o professor_n of_o holiness_n but_o base_a and_o abject_a people_n and_o deride_v their_o simplicity_n in_o wicked_a worldly_a policy_n make_v holiness_n a_o note_n of_o folly_n and_o their_o own_o audacious_a impudence_n the_o only_a mark_n of_o wisdom_n and_o deep_a discretion_n yet_o shall_v not_o this_o discountenance_n a_o good_a cause_n but_o rather_o confirm_v a_o christian_a resolution_n and_o give_v boldness_n and_o christian_a courage_n to_o bear_v off_o with_o patience_n the_o contempt_n and_o disgrace_n of_o evil_a and_o wicked_a man_n and_o secret_o scorn_v at_o their_o base_a estimation_n have_v their_o eye_n of_o faith_n still_o fix_v on_o the_o end_n of_o all_o thing_n death_n with_o a_o settle_a confidence_n that_o death_n will_v not_o only_o give_v they_o rest_v from_o all_o their_o trouble_n and_o adversity_n but_o admit_v they_o also_o into_o the_o bless_a fellowship_n of_o god_n the_o holy_a angel_n and_o saint_n from_o whence_o they_o shall_v see_v their_o proud_a enemy_n cast_v into_o utter_a darkness_n and_o obloquy_n and_o with_o miserable_a desperation_n acknowledge_v their_o wilful_a neglect_n in_o christian_a duty_n thus_o the_o meditation_n of_o death_n may_v give_v disgrace_v and_o afflict_a christian_n a_o life_n of_o hope_n in_o the_o height_n of_o their_o extremity_n therefore_o let_v not_o the_o faithful_a do_v as_o the_o wicked_a do_v fear_v to_o die_v but_o hope_v to_o die_v intend_v the_o spiritual_a passage_n and_o course_n of_o their_o life_n 12._o act_n 12._o so_o as_o that_o their_o end_n may_v give_v they_o comfort_v without_o terror_n let_v we_o reduce_v to_o memory_n what_o the_o holy_a prophet_n apostle_n and_o martyr_n have_v do_v in_o this_o cause_n how_o careful_a they_o have_v be_v to_o preserve_v their_o life_n in_o the_o memory_n of_o honest_a and_o godly_a reputation_n how_o careless_a also_o have_v they_o esteem_v their_o life_n for_o the_o defence_n and_o reputation_n of_o the_o gospel_n 7._o act_n 7._o be_v content_a nay_o careful_a not_o only_o to_o give_v up_o their_o life_n but_o to_o give_v they_o up_o with_o torment_n for_o the_o testimony_n of_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n to_o these_o man_n let_v we_o frame_v our_o imitation_n let_v we_o care_n for_o our_o life_n as_o they_o care_v let_v we_o also_o care_v to_o die_v as_o they_o care_v in_o every_o work_n of_o our_o life_n let_v we_o remember_v our_o end_n and_o at_o our_o end_n
