endswill_n no_o more_o vitiate_v and_o corrupt_v it_o than_o any_o other_o end_v will_n if_o therefore_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v just_a without_o be_v design_v for_o a_o expiation_n it_o will_v remain_v just_a still_o though_o it_o be_v design_v for_o aâ—_n expiation_n for_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n which_o be_v undoubted_o include_v in_o such_o expiation_n be_v most_o undoubted_o just_a and_o good_a thing_n when_o they_o be_v design_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v by_o just_a and_o lawful_a mean_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v just_a and_o lawful_a they_o do_v with_o the_o same_o mouthful_a of_o breath_n contradict_v their_o own_o objection_n against_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o expiation_n and_o do_v as_o good_a as_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o expiation_n be_v just_a and_o lawful_a too_o when_o therefore_o secinus_fw-la and_o his_o follower_n do_v in_o very_o tragical_a expression_n and_o some_o of_o those_o expresnon_n so_o indecent_a and_o irreverent_a to_o say_v no_o worse_o as_o not_o fit_a to_o be_v mention_v exclaim_v against_o the_o injustice_n of_o the_o expiation_n it_o be_v notorious_a that_o they_o quit_v their_o reason_n and_o fly_v to_o harangue_n that_o be_v they_o hope_v in_o this_o case_n to_o prevail_v by_o their_o rhetoric_n rather_o than_o by_o their_o argument_n for_o i_o can_v hardly_o persuade_v myself_o to_o believe_v they_o so_o shortsighted_a as_o not_o to_o perceive_v that_o any_o argument_n against_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v not_o contradict_v such_o their_o own_o position_n which_o maintain_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o passion_n one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v remark_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v proceed_v and_o that_o be_v that_o because_o the_o objection_n under_o this_o head_n be_v only_o lay_v against_o the_o justice_n but_o not_o at_o all_o against_o the_o value_n merit_n or_o extensive_a influence_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n therefore_o i_o have_v precise_o stick_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n without_o mix_v other_o thing_n with_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o expiation_n that_o be_v i_o have_v here_o only_o assert_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n 2._o the_o second_o objection_n against_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n stand_v thus_o and_o that_o be_v that_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o he_o have_v power_n over_o his_o own_o life_n that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lay_v down_o that_o life_n and_o that_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o accept_v it_o yet_o all_o this_o will_v amount_v but_o to_o part_v of_o payment_n for_o first_o the_o death_n that_o we_o deserve_v by_o our_o sin_n be_v eternal_a but_o that_o which_o he_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n be_v but_o transient_a and_o temporal_a it_o be_v confess_v that_o as_o the_o socinian_o do_v deny_v the_o expiation_n so_o do_v they_o also_o a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n but_o yet_o that_o do_v not_o at_o all_o take_v off_o from_o the_o â—orce_n of_o the_o objection_n because_o if_o they_o who_o maintain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v also_o assert_v a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n it_o be_v sufficient_a for_o their_o confutation_n to_o show_v that_o their_o several_a doctrine_n do_v contradict_v and_o so_o overthrow_v each_o other_o the_o objection_n then_o be_v so_o far_o lay_v right_a it_o go_v on_o further_a thus_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n be_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o of_o thousand_o of_o million_o of_o myriad_o nay_o of_o multitude_n of_o myriad_n but_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o the_o death_n of_o one_o so_o that_o if_o either_o we_o consider_v the_o extent_n of_o our_o gild_n or_o the_o malignity_n of_o it_o it_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n seem_v reasonable_a and_o therefore_o neither_o just_a that_o the_o single_a death_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o proportionats_n expiation_n of_o it_o nor_o indeed_o will_v it_o according_a to_o those_o who_o make_v the_o objection_n who_o though_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o one_o place_n that_o in_o he_o dwell_v all_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a and_o in_o another_o place_n that_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o god_n he_o think_v it_o no_o robbery_n to_o be_v equal_a
with_o god_n will_v yet_o in_o spite_n of_o these_o and_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o express_a declaration_n to_o the_o contrary_a still_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man._n now_o it_o be_v free_o confess_v that_o if_o the_o case_n be_v so_o than_o his_o single_a death_n will_v be_v no_o valuable_a compensation_n for_o the_o death_n of_o all_o the_o sinner_n in_o the_o world_n and_o much_o less_o will_v it_o be_v so_o for_o the_o eternal_a death_n of_o such_o sinner_n but_o since_o the_o scripture_n have_v over_o and_o over_o tell_v we_o that_o his_o death_n be_v such_o a_o compensation_n and_o since_o such_o a_o compensation_n can_v not_o exceed_v the_o dignity_n of_o that_o character_n which_o the_o same_o scripture_n have_v give_v we_o of_o he_o though_o their_o way_n of_o reason_v say_v otherwise_o i_o dare_v leave_v it_o to_o any_o sober_a christian_a to_o judge_n whether_o it_o do_v not_o more_o concern_v they_o to_o answer_v what_o the_o scripture_n do_v object_n to_o they_o than_o it_o do_v we_o in_o the_o present_a case_n to_o answer_v what_o they_o do_v object_n to_o we_o for_o if_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n dwell_v in_o our_o saviour_n bodily_a and_o so_o be_v unite_v to_o and_o with_o that_o body_n than_o it_o will_v be_v no_o inconceivable_a strain_n to_o imagine_v that_o the_o infinite_a dignity_n of_o the_o person_n suffer_v must_v needs_o add_v a_o immense_a value_n to_o such_o his_o suffering_n and_o by_o so_o do_v must_v make_v they_o more_o than_o adequate_a to_o the_o gild_n of_o all_o mankind_n and_o though_o this_o of_o itself_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o recollect_v some_o few_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v to_o and_o make_v good_a already_o we_o may_v still_o be_v far_o satisfy_v that_o the_o objection_n against_o the_o value_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n at_o all_o if_o we_o do_v consider_v therefore_o that_o because_o our_o saviour_n take_v on_o he_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o angel_n that_o he_o do_v therefore_o die_v for_o man_n and_o not_o for_o angel_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o fall_v angel_n be_v leave_v without_o any_o hope_n of_o escape_n from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o final_a judgement_n which_o man_n be_v not_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o vengeance_n which_o the_o fall_a angel_n shall_v then_o suffer_v will_v never_o work_v out_o their_o redemption_n or_o forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n because_o that_o vengeance_n shall_v be_v eternal_a if_o we_o consider_v that_o neither_o will_v eternal_a vengeance_n will_v reconcile_v sinner_n to_o god_n and_o from_o he_o obtain_v their_o pardon_n and_o that_o upon_o that_o single_a account_n it_o be_v of_o more_o value_n in_o his_o signt_n than_o the_o death_n of_o angel_n and_o man_n and_o that_o therefore_o he_o who_o suffer_v that_o death_n be_v infinite_o great_a than_o both_o by_o which_o we_o may_v also_o understand_v that_o if_o there_o be_v any_o saviour_n do_v die_v to_o reconcile_v sinner_n to_o god_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o god_n suffer_v to_o reconcile_v sinner_n to_o himself_o which_o at_o at_o the_o very_a first_o sight_n but_o to_o we_o yet_o we_o must_v make_v the_o first_o step_v towards_o a_o reconciliation_n now_o a_o man_n of_o a_o worldly_a reason_n will_v in_o this_o case_n be_v apt_a to_o cry_v out_o what!_o must_v i_o begin_v to_o give_v myself_o satisfaction_n be_v this_o sense_n or_o justice_n do_v not_o he_o do_v the_o injury_n and_o be_v not_o the_o whole_a reparation_n to_o come_v from_o he_o but_o god_n thought_n be_v not_o as_o man_n thought_n nor_o his_o way_n as_o man_n way_n and_o therefore_o though_o your_o enemy_n begin_v the_o injury_n yet_o if_o he_o command_v you_o must_v begin_v the_o reconciliation_n and_o if_o god_n do_v not_o only_o begin_v the_o reconciliation_n in_o the_o case_n before_o we_o but_o also_o suffer_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v complete_a it_o all_o the_o 2._o for_o second_o our_o saviour_n be_v as_o we_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o a_o middle_a person_n between_o god_n and_o man_n a_o mediator_n in_o his_o person_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o office_n as_o he_o be_v not_o so_o man_n but_o that_o he_o be_v god_n so_o he_o be_v not_o so_o god_n but_o that_o he_o be_v man._n and_o then_o if_o we_o add_v that_o as_o man_n he_o suffer_v for_o forbid_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o this_o law_n do_v must_v in_o reason_n and_o equity_n assign_v a_o heavy_a punishment_n to_o such_o great_a sin_n 6._o such_o heavy_a punishment_n must_v suppose_v a_o resurrection_n for_o a_o great_a punishment_n than_o death_n can_v therefore_o be_v inflict_v upon_o a_o dead_a man_n without_o a_o resurrection_n because_o no_o punishment_n at_o all_o can_v be_v so_o inflict_v upon_o he_o for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o sensation_n
there_o can_v be_v no_o punishment_n and_o a_o dead_a man_n can_v have_v no_o sensation_n unless_o we_o can_v suppose_v he_o to_o be_v alive_a and_o dead_a at_o the_o same_o time_n this_o head_n may_v a_o resurrection_n and_o that_o not_o only_o because_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o he_o there_o be_v not_o only_o no_o resurrection_n promise_v but_o no_o saviour_n neither_o by_o who_o alone_o a_o resurrection_n be_v to_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v to_o which_o we_o may_v add_v that_o the_o death_n threaten_v to_o adam_n by_o the_o law_n give_v to_o he_o be_v as_o neither_o any_o threat_v nor_o execution_n of_o death_n can_v be_v both_o absolute_a and_o conditional_a both_o universal_a and_o particular_a too_o from_o the_o whole_a we_o take_v notice_n that_o though_o god_n be_v oblige_v both_o by_o his_o truth_n and_o justice_n to_o execute_v the_o threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o first_o law_n because_o that_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n in_o his_o innocence_n that_o be_v before_o he_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o before_o god_n have_v promise_v one_o the_o threat_v of_o punishment_n upon_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n be_v as_o we_o have_v see_v absolute_a and_o peremptory_a yet_o because_o the_o revelation_n of_o a_o future_a and_o everlasting_a punishment_n in_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v rather_o make_v by_o way_n of_o information_n than_o by_o way_n of_o peremptory_a threat_n and_o absolute_a denunciation_n therefore_o god_n be_v oblige_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o such_o will_v just_o save_v we_o from_o the_o punishment_n peremptory_o threaten_v to_o adam_n viz._n the_o loss_n of_o life_n execute_v upon_o he_o and_o all_o mankind_n by_o release_n we_o from_o it_o after_o we_o have_v suffer_v it_o and_o from_o a_o future_a and_o eternal_a punishment_n express_o reveal_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o christian_n and_o probable_o also_o after_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n believe_v by_o the_o patriarch_n and_o by_o god_n church_n among_o the_o jew_n by_o prevent_v it_o chap._n i._n the_o scripture_n do_v most_o express_o assert_v that_o mankind_n be_v redeem_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n or_o to_o the_o method_n of_o his_o proceed_n in_o the_o like_a case_n to_o employ_v great_a mean_n to_o bring_v his_o purpose_n to_o pass_v where_o less_o may_v be_v sufficient_a punishment_n be_v the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n a_o objection_n to_o this_o position_n answer_v and_o as_o we_o have_v ground_v what_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o introduction_n upon_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n which_o have_v acquaint_v we_o how_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o it_o death_n enter_v into_o the_o world_n so_o in_o what_o be_v to_o follow_v concern_v the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n both_o from_o sin_n and_o punishment_n we_o shall_v take_v our_o rise_n from_o revelation_n likewise_o not_o only_o because_o we_o have_v know_v nothing_o of_o the_o matter_n but_o by_o revelation_n but_o also_o because_o in_o the_o present_a case_n revelation_n be_v undoubted_o the_o best_a guide_n of_o our_o reason_n for_o reason_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v guide_v best_a by_o that_o without_o the_o guidance_n of_o which_o reason_n itself_o be_v confess_o blind_a and_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o it_o become_v all_o those_o who_o acknowledge_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n i_o say_v it_o become_v they_o in_o modesty_n and_o deference_n to_o the_o author_n and_o in_o prudence_n for_o their_o own_o more_o certain_a conduct_n rather_o to_o endeavour_v to_o bring_v their_o reason_n to_o comply_v with_o the_o revelation_n than_o to_o bring_v the_o revelation_n to_o comply_v with_o their_o reason_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o ourselves_o may_v practice_v what_o we_o can_v but_o judge_v to_o be_v best_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v lay_v the_o groundwork_n of_o all_o that_o be_v to_o follow_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o st._n peter_n in_o the_o four_o of_o the_o act_n and_o the_o twelve_o verse_n neither_o be_v there_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v in_o which_o word_n the_o apostle_n and_o he_o too_o at_o that_o time_n fill_v with_o the_o holy-ghost_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o eight_o verse_n do_v express_o tell_v we_o for_o the_o word_n do_v import_v so_o much_o that_o man_n must_v be_v save_v by_o jesus_n christ_n of_o nazareth_n consult_v the_o ten_o verse_n and_o by_o no_o other_o for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o by_o name_n in_o the_o text_n be_v mean_v jesus_n christ_n himself_o because_o what_o he_o call_v name_n in_o one_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n be_v oppose_v to_o any_o other_o in_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n as_o in_o the_o ten_o verse_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o impotent_a man_n be_v make_v whole_a by_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o beginning_n and_o that_o he_o be_v make_v whole_a by_o him_n that_o be_v by_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o verse_n those_o who_o profess_o and_o avow_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o evacuate_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n merit_n and_o blood_n do_v to_o that_o purpose_n start_v if_o not_o a_o impertinent_a yet_o a_o very_a saucy_a question_n which_o be_v whether_o or_o no_o god_n can_v not_o have_v save_v sinful_a man_n by_o some_o other_o mean_n than_o by_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n will_v alter_v
and_o his_o law_n he_o will_v be_v unwise_a also_o and_o therefore_o 6._o last_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o that_o description_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o of_o it_o in_o god_n word_n do_v full_o assure_v we_o that_o he_o have_v no_o such_o design_n in_o his_o counsel_n as_o to_o throw_v away_o his_o law_n to_o gratify_v his_o enemy_n with_o impunity_n from_o all_o which_o reason_n and_o as_o we_o do_v believe_v from_o each_o of_o they_o in_o particular_a it_o seem_v satisfactory_o evident_a that_o a_o gospel-pardon_a of_o sin_n be_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o god_n do_v in_o the_o gospel_n promise_v pardon_n of_o sin_n there_o must_v be_v some_o previous_a condition_n that_o must_v be_v observe_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n and_o what_o share_v our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o performance_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o such_o condition_n we_o shall_v learn_v hereafter_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o we_o dismiss_v this_o chapter_n we_o must_v not_o dissemble_v that_o it_o may_v be_v surmise_v and_o therefore_o also_o that_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o alsolute_a gospel-pardon_a that_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o arbitrary_a gospel-pardon_a and_o that_o there_o be_v some_o expression_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o lean_a that_o way_n and_o may_v at_o least_o incline_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n but_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o pardon_n can_v come_v from_o god_n but_o what_o be_v just_a and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o arbitrary_a justice_n be_v only_o one_o branch_n of_o arbitrary_a power_n and_o therefore_o be_v in_o reality_n no_o justice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o be_v only_o a_o resolute_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n without_o any_o reason_n for_o such_o determination_n therefore_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v belong_v to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o action_n be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o his_o holiness_n that_o be_v by_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n and_o he_o only_o therefore_o will_v what_o he_o please_v because_o he_o neither_o do_v not_o can_n please_v to_o will_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v just_o chap._n iii_o a_o gospel-salvation_n contain_v in_o it_o 1._o pardon_v of_o sin_n 2._o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n to_o these_o two_o other_o thing_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n negative_o the_o several_a way_n how_o such_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v from_o whence_o a_o inference_n of_o the_o doctrine_n assert_v with_o some_o practical_a inference_n have_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n make_v it_o good_a that_o misery_n and_o death_n that_o be_v in_o one_o word_n that_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o second_o that_o the_o gospel_n itself_o hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o either_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n our_o next_o proposition_n must_v be_v that_o because_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o very_a case_n be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n will_n and_o because_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o gospel_n reveal_v be_v the_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o therefore_o man_n sin_n be_v to_o be_v pardon_v though_o not_o by_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n and_o then_o because_o it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v pardon_v some_o way_n or_o other_o it_o will_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o that_o way_n be_v for_o by_o such_o enquiry_n it_o may_v perhaps_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o gospel-truth_n and_o that_o too_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o jesus_n christ_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o here_o because_o the_o gospel_n promise_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o do_v from_o thence_o in_o the_o first_o place_n conclude_v that_o the_o pardon_n must_v be_v conditional_a so_o we_o must_v in_o the_o next_o place_n inquire_v what_o that_o condition_n or_o what_o those_o condition_n be_v upon_o which_o this_o pardon_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v now_o if_o in_o order_n to_o our_o more_o rational_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o this_o enquiry_n we_o do_v first_o look_v into_o the_o gospel_n there_o to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o a_o gospel-salvation_n mean_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o learn_v that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o second_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o two_o thing_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o this_o matter_n two_o other_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o our_o lose_a holiness_n for_o as_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o second_o proposition_n that_o though_o the_o gospel_n do_v allow_v a_o pardon_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o allow_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o therefore_o something_o will_v be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n so_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o first_o proposition_n that_o because_o punishment_n for_o sin_n be_v necessary_a therefore_o some_o punishment_n be_v that_o what_o it_o will_v at_o present_a must_v be_v suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o then_o if_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o discourse_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o consideration_n of_o any_o such_o punishment_n so_o suffer_v the_o gospel-pardon_a of_o our_o sin_n do_v afterward_o ensue_v then_o such_o pardon_n may_v be_v so_o far_o ascribe_v to_o such_o punishment_n as_o that_o our_o gild_n and_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o such_o our_o gild_n may_v be_v true_o esteem_v to_o be_v expiate_v by_o it_o now_o in_o order_n to_o find_v out_o what_o punishment_n it_o be_v that_o can_v make_v such_o a_o expiation_n we_o shall_v first_o inquire_v what_o punishment_n can_v do_v it_o and_o because_o repentance_n do_v not_o so_o whole_o consist_v in_o action_n but_o that_o it_o must_v have_v something_o of_o suffer_v mix_v with_o it_o therefore_o in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o design_n let_v our_o first_o negative_a proposition_n be_v this_o 1._o that_o our_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v out_o a_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o gospel-condition_n require_v of_o we_o without_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel-expiation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n make_v out_o that_o expiation_n for_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n necessary_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n repentance_n so_o exact_a and_o complete_a as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o all_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v and_o so_o after_o all_o he_o must_v remain_v a_o sinner_n as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v i_o say_v beside_o that_o his_o very_a manner_n of_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n be_v a_o demonstrative_a proof_n that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o we_o may_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o then_o expiate_v and_o so_o neither_o pardon_v when_o god_n himself_o lay_v on_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o when_o god_n give_v his_o law_n to_o mankind_n in_o their_o universal_a father_n and_o representative_a adam_n we_o know_v that_o he_o ratify_v such_o law_n by_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n and_o we_o know_v also_o that_o every_o man_n let_v he_o be_v as_o pemtent_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v do_v still_o suffer_v that_o penalty_n and_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o also_o know_v that_o for_o that_o reason_n no_o man_n repentance_n can_v so_o far_o expiate_v his_o sin_n as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v to_o it_o by_o the_o law_n and_o then_o from_o the_o whole_a we_o may_v conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n be_v save_v because_o he_o be_v a_o true_a penitent_n he_o must_v be_v save_v by_o some_o other_o expiation_n than_o by_o such_o his_o repentance_n forasmuch_o as_o his_o repentance_n can_v at_o the_o most_o but_o qualify_v he_o to_o be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n 2._o as_o man_n repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o voluntary_a punishment_n for_o sin_n can_v so_o neither_o can_v his_o profess_a punishment_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o legal_a punishment_n for_o sin_n expiate_v his_o sin_n and_o so_o
obtain_v for_o he_o a_o gospel-forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n allot_v to_o sin_n and_o as_o under_o the_o last_o head_n we_o find_v that_o reason_n do_v fall_v in_o with_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o they_o both_o speak_v the_o same_o thing_n so_o also_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o here_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinful_a man_n can_v therefore_o never_o expiate_v his_o sin_n because_o it_o can_v never_o purchase_v a_o just_a release_n from_o punishment_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o can_v do_v that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v just_o continue_v to_o eternity_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o because_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o law_n of_o work_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v just_a and_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o this_o law_n as_o much_o as_o word_n can_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o punishment_n which_o it_o denounce_v against_o those_o who_o do_v not_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n of_o it_o be_v eternal_a and_o that_o it_o shall_v so_o prove_v beside_o the_o express_a word_n of_o the_o law_n we_o have_v this_o far_a reason_n which_o be_v that_o the_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n threaten_v by_o the_o law_n to_o those_o who_o neglect_v to_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o sense_n or_o reason_n pass_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o condition_n so_o neglect_v and_o that_o the_o neglect_v of_o this_o law_n shall_v easy_a or_o at_o worst_a the_o very_a feasible_a condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o if_o man_n will_v neglect_v such_o salvation_n so_o place_v within_o their_o reach_n and_o so_o leave_v the_o eternal_a life_n purchase_v for_o they_o in_o order_n to_o their_o happiness_n expose_v to_o the_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a and_o necessary_a reward_n of_o all_o their_o other_o sin_n of_o obtain_v that_o happiness_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o foolish_a man_n defeat_v the_o counsel_n of_o god_n by_o a_o obstinate_a and_o unrelenting_a perseverance_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v in_o this_o case_n as_o he_o do_v in_o most_o other_o turn_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n into_o a_o curse_n upon_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o make_v that_o life_n which_o be_v design_v desert_n be_v evil_a we_o may_v be_v instruct_v from_o what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n that_o the_o justice_n which_o will_v overtake_v they_o will_v be_v justice_n without_o mercy_n and_o that_o pure_a and_o unmixed_a vengeance_n will_v be_v their_o portion_n even_o such_o vengeance_n which_o will_v only_o revenge_v upon_o they_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o their_o god_n but_o will_v never_o so_o much_o as_o pretend_v to_o make_v up_o such_o breach_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n then_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n shall_v without_o the_o interposition_n of_o a_o saviour_n be_v eternal_a and_o if_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v so_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o that_o very_a gospel_n in_o which_o however_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o salvation_n hold_v forth_o and_o if_o reason_n do_v vouch_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o case_n teach_v and_o last_o if_o a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n be_v absolute_o inconsistent_a with_o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o such_o punishment_n for_o the_o last_o suppose_v the_o sin_n to_o be_v cancel_v and_o the_o first_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v continue_v then_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o his_o sin_n can_v no_o more_o expâ—ate_a his_o sin_n under_o this_o head_n than_o his_o repentance_n as_o we_o there_o make_v it_o good_a can_v do_v so_o under_o the_o last_o anâ—_n then_o because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o possible_a way_n for_o mankind_n to_o expiate_v their_o sin_n but_o by_o their_o repentance_n or_o by_o their_o punishment_n wâ—_n do_v conclude_v that_o there_o be_v no_o possible_a way_n for_o they_o to_o make_v any_o expiation_n of_o it_o at_o all_o 3._o as_o man_n can_v himself_o be_v only_a type_n and_o shadow_n of_o that_o great_a propitiatory_a sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o may_v serve_v to_o inform_v we_o that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n ought_v to_o be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o because_o they_o do_v prefigure_v such_o a_o sacrifice_n they_o may_v over_o and_o above_o foretell_v that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n shall_v be_v yet_o because_o they_o themselves_o
unite_v in_o our_o saviour_n and_o so_o make_v up_o but_o one_o christ_n therefore_o our_o reason_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o suffering_n of_o such_o a_o man_n must_v receive_v a_o immense_a value_n from_o his_o personal_a union_n with_o god_n take_v the_o thing_n in_o a_o instance_n and_o it_o will_v be_v much_o more_o plain_a and_o satisfactory_a a_o man_n strike_v a_o prince_n no_o one_o will_v say_v that_o he_o strike_v his_o dignity_n for_o the_o thing_n be_v impossible_a but_o only_a his_o body_n but_o yet_o to_o think_v that_o the_o injury_n and_o malignity_n of_o the_o stroke_n shall_v not_o be_v rate_v as_o well_o by_o his_o dignity_n as_o by_o his_o body_n will_v be_v a_o imagination_n that_o a_o ordinary_a reason_n will_v condemn_v of_o weakness_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o body_n of_o all_o man_n be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o the_o wound_a of_o a_o prince_n be_v no_o great_a a_o natural_a hurt_v to_o he_o gracious_a and_o love_a redeemer_n i_o say_v when_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v consider_v our_o wonder_n and_o our_o incredulity_n may_v not_o only_o abate_v but_o cease_v and_o we_o may_v be_v rational_o satisfy_v that_o it_o be_v as_o well_o worth_a our_o saviour_n suffering_n to_o bring_v all_o these_o thing_n to_o pass_v though_o his_o enemy_n man_n have_v his_o interest_n in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v for_o he_o to_o make_v man_n at_o first_o now_o what_o we_o have_v say_v be_v a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o the_o objection_n upon_o supposition_n that_o any_o or_o every_o sin_n be_v of_o so_o malignant_a a_o nature_n that_o the_o just_a punishment_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v eternal_a but_o though_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o eternal_a punishment_n most_o express_o assert_v by_o the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o we_o do_v by_o no_o mean_n question_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o whatever_o the_o socinian_o may_v pretend_v to_o the_o contrary_a yet_o perhaps_o it_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a that_o the_o scripture_n do_v allot_v any_o such_o punishment_n to_o any_o other_o sin_n beside_o unbelief_n or_o which_o amount_v to_o much_o the_o same_o thing_n though_o in_o other_o word_n a_o final_a impenitence_n for_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o all_o other_o sin_n if_o they_o be_v true_o and_o hearty_o repent_v for_o shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n merit_n be_v forgive_v and_o it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o no_o man_n shall_v undergo_v a_o eternal_a punishment_n for_o those_o sin_n which_o shall_v be_v forgive_v if_o therefore_o we_o do_v assert_v what_o be_v most_o true_a that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o die_v to_o save_v unbeliever_n or_o impenitent_a sinner_n and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o only_a sinner_n to_o who_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v assign_v in_o such_o a_o case_n the_o objection_n that_o his_o temporal_a punishment_n can_v not_o take_v away_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n because_o in_o such_o case_n eternal_a punishment_n be_v not_o design_v to_o be_v take_v away_o for_o every_o unbeliever_n and_o impenitent_a person_n shall_v suffer_v it_o notwithstanding_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o there_o do_v not_o want_v very_o good_a probability_n and_o those_o too_o in_o no_o wise_a disagree_v to_o scripture-revelation_n that_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o who_o sin_n shall_v not_o be_v pardon_v after_o the_o resurrection_n shall_v have_v just_a so_o much_o punishment_n as_o they_o do_v in_o justice_n deserve_v be_v that_o more_o or_o less_o but_o that_o such_o their_o punishment_n shall_v not_o therefore_o be_v eternal_a because_o such_o their_o sin_n do_v deserve_v such_o eternal_a punishment_n but_o because_o they_o refuse_v and_o reject_v those_o easy_a mean_n which_o god_n have_v provide_v in_o a_o saviour_n by_o a_o due_a use_n of_o which_o they_o may_v have_v escape_v all_o punishment_n whatsoever_o now_o because_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o imagine_v that_o our_o saviour_n undergo_v death_n to_o save_v those_o who_o shall_v slight_v or_o reject_v that_o salvation_n which_o he_o purchase_v by_o his_o death_n
and_o because_o none_o but_o such_o who_o do_v so_o shall_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n therefore_o it_o be_v no_o objection_n against_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n to_o say_v that_o his_o temporal_a death_n can_v expiate_v a_o eternal_a punishment_n because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o any_o such_o purpose_n and_o he_o do_v not_o do_v so_o because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o alone_o shall_v suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n that_o be_v he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o shall_v refuse_v and_o reject_v the_o only_a mean_n of_o salvation_n which_o he_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n by_o his_o death_n much_o more_o may_v be_v offer_v upon_o this_o occasion_n but_o this_o be_v sufficient_a in_o this_o place_n i_o shall_v therefore_o here_o add_v no_o more_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n i_o do_v not_o question_v but_o that_o the_o value_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n sufficient_a to_o expiate_v the_o gild_n of_o any_o sin_n for_o who_o expiation_n such_o suffering_n be_v design_v though_o such_o gild_n shall_v be_v suppose_v or_o allow_v to_o deserve_v eternal_a punishment_n of_o itself_o and_o from_o the_o whole_a that_o have_v be_v speak_v on_o this_o subject_a we_o do_v at_o last_o conclude_v that_o a_o release_n from_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o sin_n by_o the_o law_n and_o purchase_v for_o man_n by_o his_o saviour_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o for_o man_n sake_n make_v his_o soul_n a_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n be_v a_o just_a and_o legal_a pardon_n and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o right_a reason_n and_o to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n for_o because_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n in_o the_o party_n forgive_v and_o because_o the_o lay_v the_o punishment_n which_o he_o deserve_v upon_o another_o be_v in_o effect_n a_o remission_n of_o that_o punishment_n to_o he_o and_o because_o last_o a_o remission_n of_o punishment_n to_o the_o party_n which_o deserve_v such_o punishment_n may_v be_v true_o account_v a_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n for_o pardon_v of_o sin_n any_o consideration_n whatsoever_o be_v those_o consideration_n never_o so_o valuable_a yet_o can_v never_o in_o reason_n or_o justice_n make_v out_o a_o gospel-salvation_n and_o therefore_o we_o lay_v it_o down_o at_o the_o beginning_n that_o as_o in_o order_n to_o a_o gospel-salvation_n there_o be_v first_o require_v a_o expiation_n and_o in_o consideration_n of_o such_o expiation_n a_o pardon_n of_o sin_n so_o there_o be_v also_o require_v a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n and_o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n for_o because_o god_n law_n as_o every_o good_a law_n beside_o sin_n so_o far_o we_o have_v only_o discourse_v of_o that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o do_v that_o we_o have_v not_o at_o all_o discourse_v of_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o law_n be_v throw_v away_o for_o because_o all_o man_n be_v sinner_n that_o be_v because_o none_o do_v obey_v the_o law_n though_o god_n upon_o valuable_a consideration_n do_v remit_v the_o punishment_n to_o some_o or_o all_o of_o those_o sinner_n yet_o still_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o duty_n enjoin_v by_o the_o law_n remain_v undo_v therefore_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o hereafter_o can_v never_o be_v sufficient_a for_o our_o obtain_v a_o gospel-salvation_n which_o include_v in_o it_o a_o eternal_a holiness_n and_o a_o eternal_a happiness_n as_o well_o as_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n now_o that_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o reason_n nor_o justice_n pass_v for_o our_o performance_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n will_v appear_v notorious_a from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o because_o forgiveness_n do_v imply_v in_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o it_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n and_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o no_o man_n can_v be_v true_o forgive_v who_o do_v not_o just_o deserve_v to_o be_v punish_v and_o no_o man_n can_v just_o deserve_v to_o be_v punish_v who_o do_v not_o transgress_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n now_o for_o be_v also_o that_o he_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v true_o suppose_v to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o when_o god_n forgive_v as_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o reason_n and_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v sin_n and_o be_v so_o express_v in_o general_a in_o the_o scripture_n so_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o the_o same_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v those_o sin_n to_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n do_v forgive_v we_o we_o be_v instruct_v both_o by_o god_n word_n and_o by_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o though_o a_o perfect_a holiness_n may_v be_v hearty_o desire_v and_o sincere_o endeavour_v after_o yet_o that_o it_o be_v never_o attain_v by_o any_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o therefore_o so_o neither_o be_v a_o perfect_a happiness_n the_o evidence_n for_o the_o first_o be_v because_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v sinner_n and_o the_o evidence_n for_o the_o last_o be_v because_o all_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v mortal_a now_o as_o sin_n be_v a_o infallible_a confutation_n of_o a_o that_o follow_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o take_v notice_n what_o every_o one_o may_v easy_o be_v satisfy_v of_o by_o their_o own_o experience_n that_o we_o love_v ourselves_o best_a that_o be_v before_o and_o beyond_o all_o other_o person_n and_o all_o thing_n whatsoever_o and_o there_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v any_o doubt_n but_o that_o such_o our_o inclination_n be_v plant_v in_o we_o at_o our_o first_o formation_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n himself_o and_o therefore_o neither_o do_v god_n ever_o require_v of_o we_o to_o slight_a or_o cast_v it_o away_o but_o by_o such_o motive_n to_o his_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n do_v yet_o far_o appear_v in_o that_o by_o become_a man_n he_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o capacity_n of_o suffer_a death_n that_o be_v of_o suffer_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o those_o that_o shall_v transgress_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o do_v indeed_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o god_n veracity_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o threaten_v great_a vengeance_n in_o any_o law_n before_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o than_o he_o will_v execute_v after_o the_o transgression_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o prevent_v such_o transgression_n for_o god_n never_o yet_o threaten_v any_o peremptory_a and_o unconditional_a punishment_n in_o any_o law_n which_o he_o his_o death_n come_v to_o be_v of_o so_o valuable_a a_o price_n as_o to_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o purchase_n we_o must_v leave_v to_o far_a enquiry_n for_o by_o that_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man_n be_v but_o the_o death_n of_o a_o creature_n and_o because_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o its_o punishment_n in_o another_o creature_n be_v stead_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o that_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o it_o can_v than_o a_o creature_n may_v by_o its_o own_o punishment_n

sinner_n as_o most_o certain_o he_o be_v not_o neither_o ought_v he_o in_o justice_n to_o be_v the_o sufferer_n and_o to_o confirm_v this_o way_n of_o argue_v we_o have_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n himself_o assure_v we_o that_o the_o father_n shall_v not_o suffer_v for_o the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o son_n nor_o the_o son_n for_o the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n that_o be_v one_o soul_n shall_v not_o suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o another_o but_o the_o soul_n that_o sin_v that_o shall_v die_v in_o the_o eighteen_o of_o ezekiel_n and_o which_o be_v yet_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o it_o perhaps_o in_o so_o many_o that_o it_o may_v be_v as_o inconceivable_a to_o we_o now_o as_o the_o future_a happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o this_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n be_v no_o good_a argument_n that_o it_o be_v not_o purchase_v by_o our_o saviour_n death_n nor_o that_o such_o his_o death_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n in_o such_o purchase_n and_o so_o say_v we_o though_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o bless_a be_v great_a vast_o great_a than_o what_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n promise_v to_o adam_n upon_o his_o obedience_n yet_o that_o can_v never_o make_v it_o out_o that_o such_o happiness_n be_v not_o the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n or_o that_o such_o his_o obedience_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n it_o may_v indeed_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o supereminent_a dignity_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o the_o inconceivable_a value_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o by_o be_v purchase_v by_o he_o derive_v such_o its_o value_n from_o such_o his_o dignity_n as_o we_o observe_v before_o and_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n it_o may_v furthermore_o convince_v we_o that_o the_o reward_n of_o believer_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o saviour_n obedience_n make_v over_o to_o they_o but_o not_o a_o reward_n that_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o their_o own_o at_o the_o very_o best_a imperfect_a righteousness_n i_o know_v very_o well_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v deny_v by_o many_o divine_n and_o other_o learned_a man_n and_o those_o too_o not_o only_o such_o who_o do_v utter_o deny_v that_o god_n bestow_v salvation_n upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n and_o purchase_n but_o even_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o those_o who_o yet_o do_v ascribe_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n to_o such_o purchase_n and_o merit_n what_o reason_n they_o offer_v for_o such_o their_o denial_n we_o shall_v speak_v to_o hereafter_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o shall_v go_v on_o to_o make_v good_a the_o imputation_n against_o each_o party_n that_o deny_v it_o and_o after_o that_o shall_v show_v that_o the_o reason_n of_o such_o their_o denial_n have_v not_o that_o weight_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v speak_v to_o they_o who_o do_v not_o bare_o acknowledge_v but_o even_o contend_v that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n be_v obtain_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n that_o be_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o man_n of_o who_o we_o now_o speak_v do_v maintain_v that_o in_o order_n to_o man_n redemption_n our_o saviour_n die_v for_o man_n sin_n and_o that_o by_o such_o his_o death_n he_o puchase_v for_o man_n a_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a wage_n of_o such_o sin_n now_o what_o they_o so_o maintain_v we_o believe_v to_o be_v true_a and_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v hand_n with_o they_o to_o make_v it_o good_a against_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n so_o far_o therefore_o we_o be_v agree_v but_o then_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o our_o saviour_n can_v possible_o suffer_v for_o man_n sin_n if_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o he_o for_o in_o order_n to_o his_o suffering_n for_o man_n sin_n he_o must_v take_v upon_o he_o such_o sin_n and_o the_o take_n upon_o he_o man_n sin_n be_v the_o have_v man_n sin_n account_v as_o his_o own_o that_o be_v in_o effect_n and_o in_o other_o word_n the_o have_v man_n sin_n impute_v to_o he_o and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o can_v man_n have_v any_o pretence_n of_o benefit_n from_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n if_o the_o merit_n of_o such_o suffering_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o man_n for_o without_o such_o imputation_n the_o merit_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v can_v only_o belong_v to_o the_o saviour_n himself_o it_o be_v evident_a therefore_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v in_o short_a but_o may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n that_o they_o who_o assert_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n in_o man_n stead_n do_v therefore_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o such_o expiation_n because_o man_n sin_n be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n at_o least_o impute_v to_o man._n thing_n therefore_o stand_v thus_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o expiation_n it_o may_v be_v reasonable_o and_o further_o demand_v why_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n or_o obedience_n may_v not_o as_o warrantable_o be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o man_n sin_n may_v be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n or_o why_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o be_v assign_v as_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n by_o the_o law_n may_v not_o be_v bestow_v upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n obedience_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o well_o as_o a_o release_n from_o punishment_n may_v be_v grant_v to_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n punishment_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n for_o there_o be_v the_o very_a selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n that_o there_o be_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o our_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o such_o saviour_n condemnation_n and_o there_o be_v the_o selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n obtain_v eternal_a life_n as_o there_o be_v
that_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n release_n from_o death_n that_o be_v imputation_n be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o as_o justifiable_a in_o one_o case_n as_o in_o the_o other_o for_o they_o both_o stand_v upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o foot_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n he_o who_o throw_v down_o one_o throw_v down_o both_o and_o therefore_o whoever_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n to_o man_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o imputation_n of_o man_n sin_n to_o our_o saviour_n and_o all_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o or_o in_o other_o word_n he_o who_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n likewise_o 2._o those_o man_n who_o do_v so_o far_o maintain_v man_n salvation_n to_o depend_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n alone_o as_o to_o deny_v impute_v righteousness_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o salvation_n do_v not_o seem_v to_o i_o sufficient_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n 1._o the_o death_n itself_o and_o 2._o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n in_o submit_v himself_o to_o such_o a_o death_n now_o because_o death_n be_v proper_o speak_v what_o he_o undergo_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o man_n sin_n for_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n do_v express_o assign_v death_n as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n hence_o it_o be_v as_o i_o conceive_v that_o most_o of_o those_o who_o have_v discourse_v of_o man_n redemption_n for_o the_o sake_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n have_v place_v the_o merit_n of_o the_o purchase_n only_o in_o such_o death_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n have_v whole_o lay_v aside_o all_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o that_o obedience_n which_o attend_v it_o but_o because_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o case_n speak_v otherwise_o and_o because_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v best_a instruct_v out_o of_o they_o in_o any_o thing_n which_o concern_v our_o saviour_n therefore_o lay_v aside_o at_o present_a all_o scheme_n of_o humane_a reason_v or_o contrivance_n we_o shall_v entire_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o for_o such_o instruction_n take_v we_o notice_n therefore_o that_o they_o inform_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v deliver_v to_o death_n by_o the_o determinate_a counsel_n and_o foreknowledge_n of_o god_n so_o st._n peter_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o of_o act_n and_o twenty_o three_o verse_n and_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o other_o place_n from_o which_o we_o infer_v that_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v a_o act_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n all_o which_o st._n paul_n give_v we_o in_o a_o few_o word_n but_o those_o very_a full_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n when_o he_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o philippian_n the_o eight_o verse_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v find_v in_o fashion_n as_o a_o man_n humble_v himself_o and_o become_v obedient_a unto_o death_n even_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n since_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v at_o least_o one_o branch_n of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n that_o be_v since_o his_o obedience_n in_o the_o scripture-account_a be_v show_v in_o his_o death_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o life_n and_o therefore_o both_o when_o in_o conjunction_n be_v one_o and_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v upon_o what_o ground_n or_o by_o what_o warrant_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v and_o much_o less_o defend_v that_o man_n be_v save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o death_n but_o that_o he_o be_v not_o save_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o obedience_n and_o i_o will_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o insist_v upon_o this_o inquiry_n because_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o our_o saviour_n death_n be_v meritorious_a of_o man_n everlasting_a happiness_n and_o that_o be_v the_o present_a case_n then_o if_o we_o must_v make_v a_o opposition_n between_o his_o death_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o to_o ascribe_v man_n happiness_n to_o his_o death_n but_o not_o to_o his_o obedience_n do_v make_v such_o a_o opposition_n but_o i_o say_v if_o there_o must_v be_v a_o opposition_n make_v between_o they_o it_o seem_v much_o more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n nay_o indeed_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o ascribe_v such_o merit_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n than_o to_o his_o death_n for_o it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o natural_a justice_n that_o duty_n and_o obedience_n may_v deserve_v a_o reward_n but_o it_o be_v a_o strain_n beyond_o conceit_n that_o punishment_n shall_v do_v so_o too_o for_o if_o that_o be_v allow_v than_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v just_o meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n as_o well_o as_o obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o at_o long_o run_v it_o will_v come_v to_o the_o same_o event_n to_o break_v the_o law_n as_o to_o keep_v it_o but_o because_o that_o can_v be_v allow_v therefore_o if_o people_n will_v have_v a_o opposition_n in_o the_o case_n where_o the_o scripture_n have_v make_v none_o we_o shall_v rather_o ascribe_v man_n eternal_a happiness_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n than_o to_o the_o death_n itself_o and_o then_o if_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n may_v be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n in_o one_o case_n why_o may_v it_o not_o be_v so_o in_o more_o for_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o a_o believer_n may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n he_o may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n too_o since_o then_o in_o the_o present_a case_n it_o be_v allow_v that_o a_o believer_n have_v his_o interest_n by_o imputation_n in_o the_o first_o case_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o he_o may_v and_o consider_v what_o have_v already_o be_v say_v that_o he_o must_v have_v it_o so_o in_o the_o last_o that_o be_v in_o a_o few_o word_n that_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n both_o in_o his_o life_n and_o in_o his_o death_n must_v purchase_v for_o man_n that_o happiness_n which_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o justice_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o appropriate_v reward_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a then_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n for_o which_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n may_v belong_v to_o believer_n the_o merit_n of_o his_o obedience_n may_v do_v so_o too_o and_o that_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o do_v therefore_o belong_v to_o they_o because_o they_o be_v impute_v to_o they_o our_o next_o business_n must_v be_v with_o those_o man_n who_o deny_v all_o imputation_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o neither_o allow_v the_o merit_n of_o his_o life_n or_o death_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o large_o discourse_v of_o the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o death_n our_o only_a business_n at_o present_a will_v be_v to_o inquire_v concern_v the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o obedience_n and_o because_o the_o man_n we_o have_v now_o to_o do_v with_o do_v deny_v all_o imputation_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o therefore_o we_o shall_v lay_v down_o and_o attempt_v the_o proof_n of_o this_o follow_a proposition_n that_o that_o righteousness_n by_o which_o believer_n shall_v be_v judge_v and_o in_o consideration_n of_o which_o they_o shall_v obtain_v salvation_n at_o the_o resurrection_n and_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v be_v the_o obedience_n of_o their_o saviour_n while_o he_o live_v in_o the_o flesh_n impute_v to_o such_o believer_n 1._o in_o order_n to_o this_o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o scripture_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o all_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n that_o be_v according_a to_o their_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n in_o this_o life_n 2._o we_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o all_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v adjudge_v to_o enjoy_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n must_v in_o order_n to_o that_o bless_a sentence_n be_v first_o entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n this_o we_o reckon_v be_v prove_v before_o 3._o we_o take_v notice_n in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o no_o man_n though_o never_o so_o righteous_a yet_o ever_o do_v do_v or_o shall_v arrive_v at_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n in_o this_o life_n the_o question_n then_o that_o remain_v to_o be_v resolve_v be_v how_o any_o man_n shall_v come_v to_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n
the_o law_n have_v promise_v to_o such_o obedience_n 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o our_o make_v good_a our_o first_o proposition_n we_o must_v examine_v what_o qualification_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o fit_v any_o one_o to_o make_v such_o purchase_n and_o then_o inquire_v far_o whether_o such_o qualification_n either_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o any_o other_o beside_o our_o saviour_n alone_o 1._o now_o the_o first_o and_o lead_v qualification_n in_o he_o who_o shall_v be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o have_v incur_v who_o transgress_v the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o who_o make_v such_o a_o purchase_n must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o same_o kind_a with_o they_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n must_v be_v a_o man._n for_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n be_v break_v by_o man_n and_o therefore_o also_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o in_o the_o congruity_n of_o thing_n and_o by_o the_o law_n of_o common_a sense_n and_o justice_n be_v to_o be_v punish_v in_o man._n now_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o the_o only_a person_n in_o the_o world_n who_o have_v this_o qualification_n for_o every_o man_n beside_o be_v as_o real_a a_o man_n as_o he_o be_v yet_o he_o be_v the_o only_a man_n among_o all_o mankind_n who_o by_o this_o qualification_n be_v fit_v for_o the_o effectual_a enterprise_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o release_v speak_v of_o 2._o for_o second_o the_o next_o qualification_n of_o he_o who_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man._n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n or_o blemish_n and_o to_o answer_v to_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n which_o in_o this_o as_o in_o several_a other_o thing_n be_v a_o type_n of_o that_o lamb_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n for_o he_o who_o be_v qualify_v to_o suffer_v for_o other_o in_o order_n to_o release_v those_o other_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o therefore_o be_v a_o sinner_n himself_o because_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o he_o must_v by_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o even_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o that_o law_n which_o assign_v such_o penalty_n suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o he_o who_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n can_v therefore_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o at_o least_o in_o the_o present_a case_n he_o can_v because_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v the_o loss_n of_o life_n his_o own_o penalty_n exhaust_v the_o whole_a stock_n or_o possibility_n of_o his_o so_o suffer_v for_o he_o who_o have_v but_o one_o life_n and_o no_o man_n have_v more_o can_v pay_v that_o life_n but_o once_o and_o therefore_o if_o he_o lay_v it_o down_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n have_v nothing_o remain_v to_o lay_v down_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o 3._o he_o who_o be_v due_o qualify_v to_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o their_o sin_n must_v be_v a_o man_n who_o life_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o the_o reason_n for_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o obvious_a because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v make_v no_o such_o purchase_n and_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v therefore_o make_v any_o such_o purchase_n because_o the_o death_n of_o no_o single_a man_n can_v make_v such_o a_o purchase_n for_o himself_o for_o what_o no_o single_a man_n death_n can_v do_v for_o himself_o that_o the_o death_n of_o all_o man_n can_v do_v for_o all_o for_o there_o be_v just_a the_o same_o proportion_n between_o all_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o all_o that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o one_o beside_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n it_o look_v very_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o the_o death_n of_o such_o a_o man_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o transgression_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o release_n from_o such_o punishment_n for_o then_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n and_o that_o be_v his_o death_n will_v bear_v a_o quite_o contrary_a character_n for_o it_o will_v be_v both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o who_o transgress_v it_o to_o death_n do_v not_o by_o so_o do_v design_n to_o return_v they_o to_o life_n for_o if_o it_o do_v then_o by_o inflict_v its_o sentence_n it_o must_v design_n to_o revoke_v that_o sentence_n and_o by_o make_v the_o punishment_n a_o release_n from_o the_o punishment_n must_v look_v like_o trifle_a and_o not_o like_o justice_n the_o loss_n of_o no_o sinner_n life_n then_o be_v of_o value_v sufficient_a to_o put_v a_o period_n to_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o sentence_n which_o the_o law_n pronounce_v against_o those_o who_o do_v transgress_v it_o and_o every_o man_n death_n in_o the_o course_n of_o the_o law_n have_v be_v eternal_a be_v there_o nothing_o else_o to_o remove_v it_o but_o his_o own_o strength_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n but_o his_o own_o death_n for_o if_o the_o death_n of_o a_o dead_a man_n can_v do_v nothing_o for_o he_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o other_o of_o his_o power_n or_o merit_n can_v for_o in_o the_o case_n before_o we_o he_o can_v have_v no_o other_o merit_n of_o his_o own_o to_o restore_v he_o to_o life_n but_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n as_o we_o have_v see_v be_v none_o at_o all_o and_o to_o expect_v any_o relief_n from_o a_o dead_a man_n power_n be_v to_o expect_v relief_n from_o no_o power_n at_o all_o for_o death_n crush_v all_o the_o power_n of_o all_o man_n who_o it_o seize_v now_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n who_o die_v because_o they_o be_v sinner_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o safe_o conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n who_o be_v i_o say_v if_o any_o man_n shall_v do_v this_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o his_o death_n or_o his_o life_n which_o you_o will_v be_v therefore_o of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n or_o death_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n because_o he_o do_v by_o it_o make_v that_o purchase_n which_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v not_o do_v by_o they_o for_o in_o the_o present_a case_n the_o value_n of_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v true_o and_o just_o estimate_v by_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o purchase_n it_o can_v make_v because_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o purchase_n depend_v upon_o the_o allowance_n of_o the_o great_a and_o just_a god_n and_o then_o when_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o release_v man_n from_o death_n in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o his_o innocent_a saviour_n and_o when_o he_o be_v not_o so_o in_o consideration_n of_o sinful_a man_n be_v own_o death_n and_o when_o he_o do_v profess_o declare_v such_o his_o will_n in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o word_n and_o by_o the_o repeat_v attestation_n of_o matter_n of_o fact_n whereby_o several_a people_n have_v be_v raise_v from_o the_o dead_a in_o the_o name_n and_o by_o the_o profess_a power_n of_o the_o saviour_n i_o say_v when_o we_o find_v all_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v so_o as_o we_o do_v or_o at_o least_o easy_o may_v find_v they_o so_o to_o be_v we_o may_v from_o the_o whole_a conclude_v that_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o death_n of_o all_o mankind_n because_o it_o can_v do_v that_o which_o the_o death_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v do_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o allowance_n of_o god_n himself_o now_o from_o these_o proposition_n so_o lay_v down_o we_o may_v therefore_o conclude_v that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o only_o in_o our_o saviour_n set_v forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n 1._o because_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o justice_n that_o the_o
life_n he_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o our_o stead_n so_o also_o that_o when_o he_o take_v it_o up_o again_o he_o take_v up_o with_o it_o the_o life_n of_o all_o those_o who_o by_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n shall_v have_v a_o interest_n in_o such_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o as_o our_o christianity_n do_v acquaint_v we_o that_o they_o who_o live_v to_o christ_n do_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n so_o st._n paul_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n do_v tell_v we_o in_o the_o eight_o to_o the_o roman_n ver_fw-la 11._o that_n if_o the_o spirit_n of_o he_o that_o raise_v up_o jesus_n from_o the_o dead_a do_v dwell_v in_o you_o he_o that_o raise_v up_o christ_n from_o the_o dead_a shall_v also_o quicken_v your_o mortal_a body_n by_o his_o spirit_n that_o dwell_v in_o you_o to_o the_o colossian_n ver_fw-la 18._o so_o we_o be_v call_v the_o child_n of_o the_o resurrection_n in_o the_o twenty_o of_o st._n luke_n ver_fw-la 36._o so_o that_o a_o good_a man_n from_o the_o certainty_n of_o his_o saviour_n resurrection_n from_o death_n to_o glory_n and_o immortality_n may_v safe_o conclude_v his_o own_o may_v lie_v down_o in_o his_o grave_n as_o secure_o as_o in_o his_o bed_n and_o when_o the_o morning_n of_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v down_o forth_o may_v be_v more_o secure_a of_o rise_v again_o and_o put_v on_o his_o body_n than_o he_o can_v be_v that_o he_o shall_v rise_v on_o the_o morrow-morning_n and_o put_v on_o his_o clothes_n for_o for_o the_o first_o he_o have_v the_o security_n of_o truth_n and_o omnipotence_n but_o for_o the_o last_o he_o have_v only_o the_o promise_n of_o his_o own_o presumption_n or_o at_o the_o very_o best_a but_o of_o his_o hope_n 4._o as_o the_o faithful_a shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o resurrection_n obtain_v their_o own_o resurrection_n from_o death_n to_o life_n so_o the_o life_n which_o by_o such_o their_o resurrection_n they_o shall_v obtain_v shall_v be_v life_n eternal_a this_o be_v express_a scripture_n and_o a_o christian_a may_v therefore_o be_v satisfy_v in_o and_o assure_v of_o its_o truth_n for_o our_o saviour_n himself_o tell_v we_o as_o much_o when_o give_v a_o account_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n he_o close_v such_o account_n in_o the_o last_o verse_n of_o the_o twenty_o five_o chapter_n of_o st._n matthew_n with_o these_o word_n and_o these_o shall_v go_v into_o everlasting_a punishment_n and_o then_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n but_o the_o righteous_a into_o life_n eternal_a and_o reason_n tell_v we_o that_o so_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v because_o where_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o death_n whatsoever_o be_v take_v away_o there_o the_o possibility_n of_o death_n must_v be_v take_v away_o too_o unless_o we_o shall_v imagine_v that_o death_n shall_v be_v bring_v upon_o a_o rational_a creature_n subject_n to_o law_n without_o any_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n at_o all_o but_o as_o we_o have_v often_o lay_v it_o down_o and_o prove_v it_o already_o that_o can_v be_v suppose_v in_o the_o present_a case_n because_o the_o death_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o be_v suppose_v to_o come_v from_o god_n justice_n and_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n can_v either_o true_o or_o rational_o be_v suppose_v to_o inflict_v death_n there_o where_o there_o be_v no_o desert_n of_o it_o now_o we_o therefore_o know_v that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n if_o therefore_o as_o we_o have_v already_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o expiation_n and_o if_o upon_o their_o resurrection_n they_o obtain_v a_o indefectible_a holiness_n the_o inference_n will_v be_v that_o the_o cause_n of_o death_n sin_n will_v upon_o the_o first_o account_n be_v cancel_v and_o blot_v out_o and_o that_o upon_o the_o last_o account_n it_o can_v be_v renew_v or_o restore_v and_o that_o therefore_o upon_o both_o account_n in_o conjunction_n death_n the_o wage_n of_o sin_n can_v never_o more_o return_v and_o then_o when_o a_o life_n restore_v be_v secure_v from_o all_o possible_a return_n of_o death_n we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o such_o life_n so_o restore_v must_v be_v eternal_a and_o agreeable_a to_o what_o we_o now_o say_v st._n paul_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o god_n but_o be_v that_o as_o it_o will_v yet_o to_o our_o purpose_n if_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v fashion_v like_o unto_o his_o glorious_a body_n than_o it_o will_v be_v no_o improbable_a conclusion_n that_o they_o shall_v with_o that_o glory_n put_v on_o a_o immortal_a frame_n and_o constitution_n and_o this_o conclusion_n will_v then_o advance_v from_o probable_a to_o certain_a when_o we_o know_v that_o the_o same_o apostle_n do_v acquaint_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o body_n which_o be_v sow_o in_o dishonour_n shall_v be_v raise_v in_o glory_n but_o over_o and_o above_o that_o this_o corruptible_fw-fr must_v put_v on_o incorruption_n and_o that_o this_o mortal_n must_v put_v on_o immortality_n much_o more_o may_v be_v offer_v on_o this_o subject_a but_o from_o what_o have_v be_v glance_v at_o we_o may_v now_o perceive_v that_o our_o body_n in_o imitation_n of_o our_o saviour_n body_n shall_v after_o its_o resurrection_n be_v endue_v with_o a_o glorious_a frame_n and_o a_o immortal_a constitution_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o power_n as_o it_o shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o his_o merit_n that_o the_o power_n that_o shall_v do_v it_o be_v able_a to_o subdue_v all_o thing_n to_o itself_o that_o be_v be_v omnipotent_a and_o then_o where_o we_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o power_n of_o omnipotence_n to_o secure_v to_o we_o a_o eternal_a life_n there_o we_o can_v have_v no_o reason_n to_o doubt_v the_o eternity_n of_o such_o life_n the_o second_o thing_n shall_v now_o in_o order_n follow_v which_o be_v to_o show_v wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o such_o eternal_a life_n do_v consist_v but_o before_o we_o speak_v to_o that_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o two_o or_o three_o practical_a consideration_n which_o as_o they_o look_v back_o to_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v already_o so_o will_v be_v no_o improper_a introduction_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v be_v sensible_a of_o and_o grateful_a for_o that_o bless_a provision_n that_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n have_v make_v for_o our_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o security_n and_o this_o we_o shall_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o be_v because_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v now_o understand_v that_o such_o provision_n do_v full_o answer_v to_o our_o high_a natural_a desire_n and_o inclination_n for_o our_o anxiety_n for_o our_o own_o welfare_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o among_o all_o the_o several_a appetite_n by_o which_o we_o pursue_v after_o our_o own_o happiness_n our_o desire_n of_o life_n do_v hold_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a place_n with_o we_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a because_o the_o loss_n of_o life_n must_v needs_o be_v follow_v by_o the_o loss_n of_o all_o other_o enjoyment_n whatsoever_o that_o can_v in_o any_o wise_a conduce_v to_o our_o happiness_n and_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o our_o common_a sense_n that_o our_o grand_a and_o top_v appetite_n be_v that_o of_o life_n so_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o the_o same_o
